Dual Modification of Reverse Osmosis Membranes with NH2-MIL-125 and Functionalised Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Enhanced Nanoplastic Removal

The present study describes a novel double-modified strategy for developing high-performance thin-film composite reverse osmosis (TFC-RO) membranes by incorporating titanium-based metal organic frameworks (NH2-MIL-125) and functionalised multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the support layer and selective layer, respectively. Initially, the support layer was subjected to successive modifications using NH2-MIL-125 mixed with polysulfone (PSF) in dimethylformamide DMF solution to investigate their impact on the performance and properties of the support layer and resultant TFC-RO membranes. Results indicated that the new structure of the modified support layer had significant influences on the developed TFC-RO membranes. Notably, the pristine PSF support exhibited a large surface pore size, medium porosity, and strong hydrophobicity, resulting in a low-flux TFC-RO membrane. However, after modification with NH2-MIL-125, the optimal blend support demonstrated a small surface pore size, high porosity, and improved hydrophilicity, favouring the formation of a high performance TFC-RO membrane. The incorporation of functionalised MWCNTs nanochannels into the selective layer, using the optimal NH2-MIL-125-PSF blended support, resulted in a smoother and more hydrophilic TFC-RO membrane with enhanced negative charge to improve antifouling properties against negative foulants (i.e., nanoplastics (NPs) and bovine serum albumin (BSA)). The double-modified membrane (TFC-RO-DM) exhibited superior performance over the conventional PSF-TFC-RO membrane. Notably, the maximum water flux reached 39 L m-2.h-1 with 98.4% NaCl rejection. The membrane exhibited a high flux recovery rate of 92% following a 30-min physical cleaning process. Additionally, the TFC-RO-DM membrane displayed reduced fouling against NPs suggesting the great promise of this innovative double-modification approach for the advancement of high-performance TFC-RO membranes.

Surface Modification of Polystyrene with Boronic Acid for Immunoaffinity-Based Cell Enrichment

Obtaining an enriched and phenotypically pure cell population from heterogeneous cell mixtures is important for diagnostics and biosensing. Existing techniques such as fluorescent-activated cell sorting (FACS) and magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) require preincubation with antibodies (Ab) and specialized equipment. Cell immunopanning removes the need for preincubation and can be done with no specialized equipment. The majority of the available antibody-mediated analyte capture techniques require a modification to the Abs for binding. In this work, no antibody modification is used because we take advantage of the carbohydrate chain in the Fc region of Ab. We use boronic acid as a cross-linker to bind the Ab to a modified surface. The process allows for functional orientation and cleavable binding of the Ab. In this study, we created an immunoaffinity matrix on polystyrene (PS), an inexpensive and ubiquitous plastic. We observed a 37% increase in Ab binding compared with that of a passive adsorption approach. The method also displayed a more consistent antibody binding with 17 times less variation in Ab loading among replicates than did the passive adsorption approach. Surface topography analysis revealed that a dextran coating reduced nonspecific antibody binding. Elemental analysis (XPS) was used to characterize the surface at different stages and showed that APBA molecules can bind upside-down on the surface. While upside-down antibodies likely remain functional, their elution behavior might differ from those bound in the desired way. Cell capture experiments show that the new surface has 43% better selectivity and 2.4-fold higher capture efficiency compared to a control surface of passively adsorbed Abs. This specific surface chemistry modification will allow the targeted capture of cells or analytes with the option of chemical detachment for further research and characterization.

Enhancing Water Safety: Exploring Recent Technological Approaches for Drowning Detection

Drowning poses a significant threat, resulting in unexpected injuries and fatalities. To promote water sports activities, it is crucial to develop surveillance systems that enhance safety around pools and waterways. This paper presents an overview of recent advancements in drowning detection, with a specific focus on image processing and sensor-based methods. Furthermore, the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning algorithms (MLAs), and robotics technology in this field is explored. The review examines the technological challenges, benefits, and drawbacks associated with these approaches. The findings reveal that image processing and sensor-based technologies are the most effective approaches for drowning detection systems. However, the image-processing approach requires substantial resources and sophisticated MLAs, making it costly and complex to implement. Conversely, sensor-based approaches offer practical, cost-effective, and widely applicable solutions for drowning detection. These approaches involve data transmission from the swimmer's condition to the processing unit through sensing technology, utilising both wired and wireless communication channels. This paper explores the recent developments in drowning detection systems while considering costs, complexity, and practicality in selecting and implementing such systems. The assessment of various technological approaches contributes to ongoing efforts aimed at improving water safety and reducing the risks associated with drowning incidents.

Recent advances in surface tailoring of thin film forward osmosis membranes: A review

The recent advancements in fabricating forward osmosis (FO) membranes have shown promising results in desalination and water treatment. Different methods have been applied to improve FO performance, such as using mixed or new draw solutions, enhancing the recovery of draw solutions, membrane modification, and developing FO-hybrid systems. However, reliable methods to address the current issues, including reverse salt flux, fouling, and antibacterial activities, are still in progress. In recent decades, surface modification has been applied to different membrane processes, including FO membranes. Introducing nanochannels, bioparticles, new monomers, and hydrophilic-based materials to the surface layer of FO membranes has significantly impacted their performance and efficiency and resulted in better control over fouling and concentration polarization (CP) in these membranes. This review critically investigates the recent developments in FO membrane processes and fabrication techniques for FO surface-layer modification. In addition, this study focuses on the latest materials and structures used for the surface modification of FO membranes. Finally, the current challenges, gaps, and suggestions for future studies in this field have been discussed in detail.

Meniere's disease: Pathogenesis, treatments, and emerging approaches for an idiopathic bioenvironmental disorder

Meniere's disease (MD) is a severe inner ear condition known by debilitating symptoms, including spontaneous vertigo, fluctuating and progressive hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness or pressure within the affected ear. Prosper Meniere first described the origins of MD in the 1860s, but its underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive today. Nevertheless, researchers have identified a key histopathological feature called Endolymphatic Hydrops (ELH), which refers to the excessive buildup of endolymph fluid in the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear. The exact root of ELH is not fully understood. Still, it is believed to involve several biological and bioenvironmental etiological factors such as genetics, autoimmunity, infection, trauma, allergy, and new theories, such as saccular otoconia blocking the endolymphatic duct and sac. Regarding treatment, there are no reliable and definitive cures for MD. Most therapies focus on managing symptoms and improving the overall quality of patients' life. To make significant advancements in addressing MD, it is crucial to gain a fundamental understanding of the disease process, laying the groundwork for more effective therapeutic approaches. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the pathophysiology of MD with a focus on old and recent theories. Current treatment strategies and future translational approaches (with low-level evidence but promising results) related to MD are also discussed, including patents, drug delivery, and nanotechnology, that may provide future benefits to patients suffering from MD.

In vivo evaluation of bone regeneration using ZIF8-modified polypropylene membrane in rat calvarium defects

AIM

The profound potential of zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF8) thin film for inducing osteogenesis has been previously established under in vitro conditions. As the next step towards the clinical application of ZIF8-modified substrates in periodontology, this in vivo study aimed to evaluate the ability of the ZIF8 crystalline layer to induce bone regeneration in an animal model defect.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Following the mechanical characterization of the membranes and analysing the in vitro degradation of the ZIF8 layer, in vivo bone regeneration was evaluated in a critical-sized (5-mm) rat calvarial bone defect model. For each animal, one defect was randomly covered with either a polypropylene (PP) or a ZIF8-modified membrane (n = 7 per group), while the other defect was left untreated as a control. Eight weeks post surgery, bone formation was assessed by microcomputed tomography scanning, haematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemical analysis.

RESULTS

The ZIF8-modified membrane outperformed the PP membrane in terms of mechanical properties and revealed a trace Zn+2 release. Results of in vivo evaluation verified the superior barrier function of the ZIF8-coated membrane compared with pristine PP membrane. Compared with the limited marginal bone formation in the control and PP groups, the defect area was almost filled with mature bone in the ZIF8-coated membrane group.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results support the effectiveness of the ZIF8-coated membrane as a promising material for improving clinical outcomes of guided bone regeneration procedures, without using biological components.

Bioinspired Angstrom-Scale Heterogeneous MOF-on-MOF Membrane for Osmotic Energy Harvesting

Membrane-based salinity gradient energy generation from the osmotic potential at the interface of a river and seawater through reverse electrodialysis is a promising route for realizing clean, abundant, and sustainable energy. Membrane permeability and selective ion transport are crucial for efficient osmotic energy harvesting. However, balancing these two parameters in the membrane design and synthesis remains challenging. Herein, a hybridized bilayer metal-organic frameworks (MOF-on-MOF) membrane is fabricated for efficient transmembrane conductance for enhanced osmotic power generation. The heterogeneous membrane is constructed from imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) deposited on a UiO-66-NH₂ membrane intercalated with poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The angstrom-scale cavities in the ZIF-8 layer promote ion selectivity by size exclusion, and the PSS-intercalated UiO-66-NH₂ film ensures cation permeability. The synergistic effect is a simultaneous improvement in ion transport and selectivity from an overlapped electric double layer generating 40.01 W/m² and 665 A/m² permeability from a 500-fold concentration gradient interface at 3 KΩ and 9.20 W/m² from mixing of real sea-river water. This work demonstrates a rational design strategy for hybrid membranes with improved ion selectivity and permeability for the water-energy nexus.

Recent Advances In the development of enzymatic paper-based microfluidic biosensors

Using microfluidic paper-based analytical devices has attracted considerable attention in recent years. This is mainly due to their low cost, availability, portability, simple design, high selectivity, and sensitivity. Owing to their specific substrates and catalytic functions, enzymes are the most commonly used bioactive agents in μPADs. Enzymatic μPADs are various in design, fabrication, and detection methods. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the development of enzymatic μPADs by considering the methods of detection and fabrication. Particularly, techniques for mass production of these enzymatic μPADs for use in different fields such as medicine, environment, agriculture, and food industries are critically discussed. This paper aims to provide a critical review of μPADs and discuss different fabrication methods as the central parts of the μPADs production categorized into printable and non-printable methods. In addition, state-of-the-art technologies such as fully printed enzymatic μPADs for rapid, low-cost, and mass production and improvement have been considered.

Electrospun nanofiber composite membranes for geothermal brine treatment with lithium enrichment via membrane distillation

In this study, a composite electrospun nanofiber membrane was fabricated and used to treat a geothermal brine source with lithium enrichment. An in-situ growth technique was applied to incorporate silica nanoparticles on the surface of nanofibers with (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane as the nucleation site. The fabricated composite nanofiber membrane was heat pressed to enhance the integration of the membrane and its mechanical stability. The fabricated membranes were tested to evaluate their performance in feedwater containing different concentrations of NaCl in the range of 0-100 g/L, and the wetting resistivity of the membranes was examined. Finally, the optimal membrane was applied to treat the simulated geothermal brine. The experimental results revealed that the in-situ growth of nanoparticles and coating of flourosilane agent dramatically improved the separation performance of the membrane with high salt rejection, and adequate flux was achieved. The heat-pressed membrane obtained >99% salt rejection and flux of 14-19 L/m²h at varying feedwater salinity (0-100 g/L), and the concentration of the Li during the 24 h test reached >1100 ppm from the initial 360 ppm. Evaluation of the energy efficiency of the membranes showed that the heat-pressed membrane obtained the optimum energy efficiency in the high concentration of salts. Additionally, the economic analysis indicated that MD could achieve a levelized cost of 2.9 USD/m³ of lithium brine concentration as the heat source is within the feed. Overall, this technology would represent a viable alternative to the solar pond to concentrate Li brine, enabling a compact, efficient, and continuous operating system.

A juxtaposed review on adsorptive removal of PFAS by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with carbon-based materials, ion exchange resins, and polymer adsorbents

The removal of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from the aquatic environment is a universal concern due to the adverse effects of these substances on both the environment and public health. Different adsorbents, including carbon-based materials, ion exchange resins, biomaterials, and polymers, have been used for the removal of short-chain (C < 6) and long-chain (C > 7) PFAS from water with varying performance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new generation of adsorbents, have also been recently used to remove PFAS from water. MOFs provide unique properties such as significantly enhanced surface area, structural tunability, and improved selectivity compared to conventional adsorbents. However, due to various types of MOFs, their complex chemistry and morphology, different PFAS compounds, lack of standard adsorption test, and different testing conditions, there are inconclusive and contradictory findings in the literature. Therefore, this review aims to provide critical analysis of the performance of different types of MOFs in the removal of long-chain (C > 7), short-chain (C < 6), and ultra-short-chain (C < 3) PFAS and comprehensively study the efficiency of MOFs for PFAS removal in comparison with other adsorbents. In addition, the adsorption mechanisms and kinetics of PFAS components on different MOFs, including Materials of Institute Lavoisier (MIL), Universiteit of Oslo (UiO), Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and other hybrid types of MOF were discussed. The study also discussed the effect of environmental factors such as pH and ionic strength on the adsorption of PFAS on MOFs. In addition to the adsorption process, the reusability and regeneration of MOFs in the PFAS removal process are discussed. Finally, challenges and future outlooks of the utility of MOFs for PFAS removal were discussed to inspire future critical research efforts in removing PFAS.

Synergistic effects of microplastics and organic foulants on the performance of forward osmosis membranes

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that are abundantly present in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Forward osmosis (FO) is an advanced treatment technology with potential applications in WWTPs. The presence of MPs in WWTP effluents can contribute to FO fouling and performance deterioration. This study focuses on FO membrane fouling by MPs of different sizes, and the interactional impacts of MPs and Humic acid (HA) (as the most common organic foulant in WWTPs) on FO membrane performance. The synergistic effect of combined MPs and HA fouling is shown to cause higher flux decline for FO membranes than that of HA or MPs alone. Reverse salt flux increased in the presence of MPs, and decreased when HA was present. Further, full flux recovery was obtained for all fouled membranes after hydraulic cleaning. This indicates the efficiency of FO systems for treating wastewater with high fouling potential. This study highlights the necessity of considering MPs in studying fouling behaviour, and for mitigation strategies of membranes used in WWT. The fundamentals created here can be further extended to other membrane-assisted separation processes.

XGBoost model as an efficient machine learning approach for PFAS removal: Effects of material characteristics and operation conditions

Due to the implications of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and public health, great attention has been recently made to finding innovative materials and methods for PFAS removal. In this work, PFAS is considered universal contamination which can be found in many wastewater streams. Conventional materials and processes used to remove and degrade PFAS do not have enough competence to address the issue particularly when it comes to eliminating short-chain PFAS. This is mainly due to the large number of complex parameters that are involved in both material and process designs. Here, we took the advantage of artificial intelligence to introduce a model (XGBoost) in which material and process factors are considered simultaneously. This research applies a machine learning approach using data collected from reported articles to predict the PFAS removal factors. The XGBoost modeling provided accurate adsorption capacity, equilibrium, and removal estimates with the ability to predict the adsorption mechanisms. The performance comparison of adsorbents and the role of AI in one dominant are studied and reviewed for the first time, even though many studies have been carried out to develop PFAS removal through various adsorption methods such as ion exchange, nanofiltration, and activated carbon (AC). The model showed that pH is the most effective parameter to predict PFAS removal. The proposed model in this work can be extended for other micropollutants and can be used as a basic framework for future adsorbent design and process optimization.

Mechanism Understanding of Li-ion Separation Using A Perovskite-Based Membrane

Lithium ions play a crucial role in the energy storage industry. Finding suitable lithium-ion-conductive membranes is one of the important issues of energy storage studies. Hence, a perovskite-based membrane, Lithium Lanthanum Titanate (LLTO), was innovatively implemented in the presence and absence of solvents to precisely understand the mechanism of lithium ion separation. The ion-selective membrane's mechanism and the perovskite-based membrane's efficiency were investigated using Molecular Dynamic (MD) simulation. The results specified that the change in the ambient condition, pH, and temperature led to a shift in LLTO pore sizes. Based on the results, pH plays an undeniable role in facilitating lithium ion transmission through the membrane. It is noticeable that the hydrogen bond interaction between the ions and membrane led to an expanding pore size, from (1.07 Å) to (1.18-1.20 Å), successfully enriching lithium from seawater. However, this value in the absence of the solvent would have been 1.1 Å at 50 °C. It was found that increasing the temperature slightly impacted lithium extraction. The charge analysis exhibited that the trapping energies applied by the membrane to the first three ions (Li⁺, K⁺, and Na⁺) were more than the ions' hydration energies. Therefore, Li⁺, K⁺, and Na⁺ were fully dehydrated, whereas Mg²⁺ was partially dehydrated and could not pass through the membrane. Evaluating the membrane window diameter, and the combined effect of the three key parameters (barrier energy, hydration energy, and binding energy) illustrates that the required energy to transport Li ions through the membrane is higher than that for other monovalent cations.

Recent advancements in bioelectronic devices to interface with the peripheral vestibular system

Balance disorders affect approximately 30% of the population throughout their lives and result in debilitating symptoms, such as spontaneous vertigo, nystagmus, and oscillopsia. The main cause of balance disorders is peripheral vestibular dysfunction, which may occur as a result of hair cell loss, neural dysfunction, or mechanical (and morphological) abnormality. The most common cause of vestibular dysfunction is arguably vestibular hair cell damage, which can result from an array of factors, such as ototoxicity, trauma, genetics, and ageing. One promising therapy is the vestibular prosthesis, which leverages the success of the cochlear implant, and endeavours to electrically integrate the primary vestibular afferents with the vestibular scene. Other translational approaches of interest include stem cell regeneration and gene therapies, which aim to restore or modify inner ear receptor function. However, both of these techniques are in their infancy and are currently undergoing further characterization and development in the laboratory, using animal models. Another promising translational avenue to treating vestibular hair cell dysfunction is the potential development of artificial biocompatible hair cell sensors, aiming to replicate functional hair cells and generate synthetic 'receptor potentials' for sensory coding of vestibular stimuli to the brain. Recently, artificial hair cell sensors have demonstrated significant promise, with improvements in their output, such as sensitivity and frequency selectivity. This article reviews the history and current state of bioelectronic devices to interface with the labyrinth, spanning the vestibular implant and artificial hair cell sensors.

High durability of food due to the flow cytometry proved antibacterial and antifouling properties of TiO2 decorated nanocomposite films

Although polymeric membrane has superior properties, its applications in biomedical and food industrial fields are minimal. Biofouling is a significant concern in the membrane, created from particular interactions between the membrane and untreated water content. This research showed that a careful superhydrophilic modification of polyethersulfone membrane could address those drawbacks that have hindered their utility. Hence, a combination of chemical and physical modification showed far-reaching effects on surface behavior, affecting manifold aspects of its bacterial attachment, protein adsorption resistance, and hydrophilicity. The contact angle measurement results decreased from 30° to 0° in 26 s, and surface free energy increased by 33%, demonstrating the shifting surface wettability behavior toward the Superhydrophilicity. Besides, increasing the average surface roughness on the nanoscale and forming 70-110 nm jagged structures results in a marked reduction in protein adsorption, bacterial adhesion, and biofouling formation, confirmed by the results of Flow cytometry analysis and microtiter plate assay. An improved understanding of antifouling and antibacterial properties will greatly assist in food industries since it can be applied to enhance the durability of food and chemical materials. This is important as it gives us a simple way of improving packing reliability, reducing costs and amounts of undesirable waste products.

OP0275 DISEASE FEATURES AND SURVIVAL OUTCOMES IN A RETROSPECTIVE COHORT OF PATIENTS WITH RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS-ASSOCIATED INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASE AFTER LUNG TRANSPLANTATION

Background

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While the disease course of ILD is variable, some patients with RA have a progressive fibrosing ILD phenotype refractory to treatment. Lung transplantation (LTx) represents a life-extending option for patients with end-stage lung disease; however, data on the clinical features and outcomes of these patients are limited.

Objectives

(1) To characterize the clinical features of RA-ILD patients who received LTx at a high-volume lung transplantation center; (2) To evaluate survival and predictors of mortality in this cohort.

Methods

This retrospective study included all patients with RA-ILD who received LTx between 2004 to 2020 at UCLA. Patient demographics, RA disease features, explant pathology, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), and survival status were extracted from the electronic medical record. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize disease features. A Kaplan-Meier curve was created to evaluate survival, and a Cox proportional hazards model was created to identify predictors of survival.

Results

42 RA-ILD patients underwent LTx. The majority of patients were male (57.1%), seropositive (91.4%), with a mean RA disease duration of 12.9 years at LTx (Table 1). Over the study period, 16 (36%) patients died. Compared with patients who had survived, deceased patients were slightly older at the time of transplantation (59.0±9.7 vs. 57.3±11.5, respectively), and were more likely to have usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) in the lung explant (87.7% vs. 56.0%, p <0.05). The median follow up was 2.3 years (IQR 1.3, 4.7), and median survival time was 5.3 years (IQR 2.7, 7.6; Figure 1). In the univariate Cox proportional hazards analysis, there was a relationship between the presence of UIP pathology and increased mortality, although this did not reach significance (HR 7.13, p=0.06).

Conclusion

This single-center study of RA-ILD patients who underwent LTx demonstrated a median survival time comparable to other LTx cohorts.1 There appeared to be a relationship between the presence of a UIP pattern, and increased risk of mortality, though the small sample size may have precluded the ability to reach statistical significance. Future prospective studies are needed to validate these findings. Understanding the disease features of RA patients who undergo LTx may facilitate the early identification of RA patients at the greatest risk of developing progressive fibrosing phenotype.

Electro-Driven Materials and Processes for Lithium Recovery—A Review

The mass production of lithium-ion batteries and lithium-rich e-products that are required for electric vehicles, energy storage devices, and cloud-connected electronics is driving an unprecedented demand for lithium resources. Current lithium production technologies, in which extraction and purification are typically achieved by hydrometallurgical routes, possess strong environmental impact but are also energy-intensive and require extensive operational capabilities. The emergence of selective membrane materials and associated electro-processes offers an avenue to reduce these energy and cost penalties and create more sustainable lithium production approaches. In this review, lithium recovery technologies are discussed considering the origin of the lithium, which can be primary sources such as minerals and brines or e-waste sources generated from recycling of batteries and other e-products. The relevance of electro-membrane processes for selective lithium recovery is discussed as well as the potential and shortfalls of current electro-membrane methods.

Designing Angstrom-Scale Asymmetric MOF-on-MOF Cavities for High Monovalent Ion Selectivity

Biological ion channels feature angstrom-scale asymmetrical cavity structures, which are the key to achieving highly efficient separation and sensing of alkali metal ions from aqueous resources. The clean energy future and lithium-based energy storage systems heavily rely on highly efficient ionic separations. However, artificial recreation of such a sophisticated biostructure has been technically challenging. Here, a highly tunable design concept is introduced to fabricate monovalent ion-selective membranes with asymmetric sub-nanometer pores in which energy barriers are implanted. The energy barriers act against ionic movements, which hold the target ion while facilitating the transport of competing ions. The membrane consists of bilayer metal-organic frameworks (MOF-on-MOF), possessing a 6 to 3.4-angstrom passable cavity structure. The ionic current measurements exhibit an unprecedented ionic current rectification ratio of above 100 with exceptionally high selectivity ratios of 84 and 80 for K⁺ /Li⁺ and Na⁺ / Li⁺ , respectively (1.14 Li⁺ mol m^-2 h^-1 ). Furthermore, using quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics, it is shown that the combined effect of spatial hindrance and nucleophilic entrapment to induce energy surge baffles is responsible for the membrane's ultrahigh selectivity and ion rectification. This work demonstrates a striking advance in developing monovalent ion-selective channels and has implications in sensing, energy storage, and separation technologies.

Rare Earth Elements Recovery Using Selective Membranes via Extraction and Rejection

Recently, demands for raw materials like rare earth elements (REEs) have increased considerably due to their high potential applications in modern industry. Additionally, REEs' similar chemical and physical properties caused their separation to be difficult. Numerous strategies for REEs separation such as precipitation, adsorption and solvent extraction have been applied. However, these strategies have various disadvantages such as low selectivity and purity of desired elements, high cost, vast consumption of chemicals and creation of many pollutions due to remaining large amounts of acidic and alkaline wastes. Membrane separation technology (MST), as an environmentally friendly approach, has recently attracted much attention for the extraction of REEs. The separation of REEs by membranes usually occurs through three mechanisms: (1) complexation of REE ions with extractant that is embedded in the membrane matrix, (2) adsorption of REE ions on the surface created-active sites on the membrane and (3) the rejection of REE ions or REEs complex with organic materials from the membrane. In this review, we investigated the effect of these mechanisms on the selectivity and efficiency of the membrane separation process. Finally, potential directions for future studies were recommended at the end of the review.

Recent advances in polymeric nanostructured ion selective membranes for biomedical applications

Nano structured ion-selective membranes (ISMs) are very attractive materials for a wide range of sensing and ion separation applications. The present review focuses on the design principles of various ISMs; nanostructured and ionophore/ion acceptor doped ISMs, and their use in biomedical engineering. Applications of ISMs in the biomedical field have been well-known for more than half a century in potentiometric analysis of biological fluids and pharmaceutical products. However, the emergence of nanotechnology and sophisticated sensing methods assisted in miniaturising ion-selective electrodes to needle-like sensors that can be designed in the form of implantable or wearable devices (smartwatch, tattoo, sweatband, fabric patch) for health monitoring. This article provides a critical review of recent advances in miniaturization, sensing and construction of new devices over last decade (2011-2021). The designing of tunable ISM with biomimetic artificial ion channels offered intensive opportunities and innovative clinical analysis applications, including precise biosensing, controlled drug delivery and early disease diagnosis. This paper will also address the future perspective on potential applications and challenges in the widespread use of ISM for clinical use. Finally, this review details some recommendations and future directions to improve the accuracy and robustness of ISMs for biomedical applications.

Recent Advances in Nanomaterials Development for Nanomedicine and Cancer

Cancer is considered one of the leading causes of death, with a growing number of cases worldwide. However, the early diagnosis and efficient therapy of cancer have remained a critical challenge. The emergence of nanomedicine has opened up a promising window to address the drawbacks of cancer detection and treatment. A wide range of engineered nanomaterials and nanoplatforms with different shapes, sizes, and composition has been developed for various biomedical applications. Nanomaterials have been increasingly used in various applications in bioimaging, diagnosis, and therapy of cancers. Recently, numerous multifunctional and smart nanoparticles with the ability of simultaneous diagnosis and targeted cancer therapy have been reported. The multidisciplinary attempts led to the development of several exciting clinically approved nanotherapeutics. The nanobased materials and devices have also been used extensively to develop point-of-care and highly sensitive methods of cancer detection. In this review article, the most significant achievements and latest advances in the nanomaterials development for cancer nanomedicine are critically discussed. In addition, the future perspectives of this field are evaluated.

Lithium bioleaching: An emerging approach for the recovery of Li from spent lithium ion batteries

The rapidly growing demand for lithium has resulted in a sharp increase in its price. This is due to the ubiquitous use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in large-scale energy and transportation sectors as well as portable devices. Recycling of the LIBs for being the supply of critical metals hence becomes environmentally and economically viable. The presently used approaches for the recovery of spent LIBs like pyrometallurgical process can effectively recover nickel, cobalt, and copper, while lithium is usually lost in slag. Bioleaching process as an alternative method of extraction and recovery of valuable metals from the primary and secondary resources has been attracting a large pool of attraction. This method can provide higher recovery yield even for low concentration of metals which makes it viable among conventional methods. The bioleaching process can work with lower operating cost and consumed water and energy along with a simple condition, which produces less hazardous by-products ultimately. Here, we comprehensively review the biological and chemical mechanisms of the bioleaching process with a conclusive discussion to help how to extend the use of bioleaching for lithium extraction and recovery from the spent LIBs with a focus on recovery yields improvement. We elaborate on the three main types of the reported bioleaching with considering effective parameters including temperature, initial pH, pulp density, aeration, and medium and cell nutrients to sustain microorganism activity. Finally, practical challenges and future opportunities of lithium are discussed to inspire future research trends and pilot studies to realize the full potential of lithium recovery using sustainable bioleaching processes to extend a clean energy future.

Mimic of malignancy: delineating IgG4-related disease and lymphoma

Here, we describe the case of a 74-year-old man who was incidentally found to have a hepatic lesion during routine screening. Additional diagnostic studies demonstrated elevated IgG4 levels, IgG4 plasma cell-predominant lymphadenopathy and an inflammatory retroperitoneal mass encasing the bilateral ureters and the aorta. Given the concurrence of a lymphomatous process and IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), a multidisciplinary approach was required to determine whether targeting the lymphoma or IgG4-RD would be most efficacious. Discussions led to the decision to target treatment against IgG4-RD with systemic glucocorticoids, and subsequent imaging showed resolution of all lesions. To date, the patient remains symptom-free and has not experienced recurrence of his disease. This case highlights the importance of multidisciplinary care and the challenge inherent in targeting treatment between IgG4-RD and a concomitant lymphomatous process.

Luminescent film: Biofouling investigation of tetraphenylethylene blended polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane

Despite the huge contribution of membrane-based brine and wastewater purification systems in today's life, biofouling still affects sustainability of membrane engineering. Aimed at reducing membrane modules wastage, the need to study biofouling monitoring as one of contributory factors stemmed from the short time between initial attachment and irreversible biofoulant adhesion. Hence, a membrane for monitoring is introduced to determine the right cleaning time by using fluorescent sensing as a non-destructive and scalable approach. The classical solid-state emissive fluorophore, tetraphenylethylene (TPE), was introduced as a sustainable, safe and sensitive fluorescent indicator in order to show the potential of the method, and polyethersulfone (PES) and nonsolvent-induced phase separation method, the most popular material and method, are used to fabricate membrane in industry and academia. Since the employed filler has an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic, it can track the biofouling throughout the operation. The fabricated membranes have certain characterizations (i.e. morphology assessment, flux, antibiogram, flow cytometry, surface free energy, and protein adsorption) which indicate that hybrid membrane with 5 wt % of TPE has identical biofouling activity compared to neat PES membrane and its optimal luminescence properties make it an appropriate candidate for non-destructive and online biofouling monitoring.

Enhancing osteoregenerative potential of biphasic calcium phosphates by using bioinspired ZIF8 coating

Biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics (BCPs) have been extensively used as a bone graft in dental clinics to reconstruct lost bone in the jaw and peri-implant hard tissue due to their good bone conduction and similar chemical structure to the teeth and bone. However, BCPs are not inherently osteoinductive and need additional modification and treatment to enhance their osteoinductivity. The present study aims to develop an innovative strategy to improve the osteoinductivity of BCPs using unique features of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF8). In this method, commercial BCPs (Osteon II) were pre-coated with a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (ZIF8/PDA/PEI) layer to form a uniform and compact thin film of ZIF8 on the surface of BCPs. The surface morphology and chemical structure of ZIF8 modified Osteon II (ZIF8-Osteon) were confirmed using various analytical techniques such as XRD, FTIR, SEM, and EDX. We evaluated the effect of ZIF8 coating on cell attachment, growth, and osteogenic differentiation of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADSCs). The results revealed that altering the surface chemistry and topography of Osteon II using ZIF8 can effectively promote cell attachment, proliferation, and bone regeneration in both in vitro and in vivo conditions. In conclusion, the method applied in this study is simple, low-cost, and time-efficient and can be used as a versatile approach for improving osteoinductivity and osteoconductivity of other types of alloplastic bone grafts.

ZIF-8 Modified Polypropylene Membrane: A Biomimetic Cell Culture Platform with a View to the Improvement of Guided Bone Regeneration

PURPOSE

Despite the significant advances in modeling of biomechanical aspects of cell microenvironment, it remains a major challenge to precisely mimic the physiological condition of the particular cell niche. Here, the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been introduced as a feasible platform for multifactorial control of cell-substrate interaction, given the wide range of physical and mechanical properties of MOF materials and their structural flexibility.

RESULTS

In situ crystallization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on the polydopamine (PDA)-modified membrane significantly raised surface energy, wettability, roughness, and stiffness of the substrate. This modulation led to an almost twofold increment in the primary attachment of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) compare to conventional plastic culture dishes. The findings indicate that polypropylene (PP) membrane modified by PDA/ZIF-8 coating effectively supports the growth and proliferation of DPSCs at a substantial rate. Further analysis also displayed the exaggerated multilineage differentiation of DPSCs with amplified level of autocrine cell fate determination signals, like BSP1, BMP2, PPARG, FABP4, ACAN, and COL2A. Notably, osteogenic markers were dramatically overexpressed (more than 100-folds rather than tissue culture plate) in response to biomechanical characteristics of the ZIF-8 layer.

CONCLUSION

Hence, surface modification of cell culture platforms with MOF nanostructures proposed as a powerful nanomedical approach for selectively guiding stem cells for tissue regeneration. In particular, PP/PDA/ZIF-8 membrane presented ideal characteristics for using as a barrier membrane for guided bone regeneration (GBR) in periodontal tissue engineering.

Applying Membrane Distillation for the Recovery of Nitrate from Saline Water Using PVDF Membranes Modified as Superhydrophobic Membranes

In this study, a flat sheet direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) module was designed to eliminate nitrate from water. A polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was used in a DCMD process at an ambient pressure and at a temperature lower than the boiling point of water. The electrical conductivity of the feed containing nitrate increased, while the electrical conductivity of the permeate remained constant during the entire process. The results indicated that the nitrate ions failed to pass through the membrane and their concentration in the feed increased as pure water passed through the membrane. Consequently, the membrane was modified using TiO₂ nanoparticles to make a hierarchical surface with multi-layer roughness on the micro/nanoscales. Furthermore, 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorododecyltrichlorosilane (FTCS) was added to the modified surface to change its hydrophobic properties into superhydrophobic properties and to improve its performance. The results for both membranes were compared and reported on a pilot scale using MATLAB. In the experimental scale (a membrane surface area of 0.0014 m², temperature of 77 °C, nitrate concentration of 0.9 g/Kg, and flow rate of 0.0032 Kg/s), the flux was 2.3 Kgm⁻²h⁻¹. The simulation results of MATLAB using these data showed that for the removal of nitrate (with a concentration of 35 g/Kg) from the intake feed with a flow rate of 1 Kg/s and flux of 0.96 Kgm⁻²h⁻¹, a membrane surface area of 0.5 m² was needed.

Recent developments in enzyme immobilization technology for high-throughput processing in food industries

The demand for food and beverage markets has increased as a result of population increase and in view of health awareness. The quality of products from food processing industry has to be improved economically by incorporating greener methodologies that enhances the safety and shelf life via the enzymes application while maintaining the essential nutritional qualities. The utilization of enzymes is rendered more favorable in industrial practices via the modification of their characteristics as attested by studies on enzyme immobilization pertaining to different stages of food and beverage processing; these studies have enhanced the catalytic activity, stability of enzymes and lowered the overall cost. However, the harsh conditions of industrial processes continue to increase the propensity of enzyme destabilization thus shortening their industrial lifespan namely enzyme leaching, recoverability, uncontrollable orientation and the lack of a general procedure. Innovative studies have strived to provide new tools and materials for the development of systems offering new possibilities for industrial applications of enzymes. Herein, an effort has been made to present up-to-date developments on enzyme immobilization and current challenges in the food and beverage industries in terms of enhancing the enzyme stability.

Scalable fabrication of tunable titanium nanotubes via sonoelectrochemical process for biomedical applications

Titanium does not react well with the human tissues and due to its bio-inert nature the surface modification has yet to be well-studied. In this study, the sonoelectrochemical process has been carried out to generate TiO₂ nanotube arrays on implantable Ti 6-4. All the prepared nanotubes fill with the vancomycin by immersion and electrophoresis method. Drug-releasing properties, antibacterial behavior, protein adsorption and cell attachment of drug-modified nanotubes are examined by UV-vis, flow cytometry, modified disc diffusion, BSA adsorption, and FESEM, respectively. The most uniform morphology, appropriate drug release, cell viability behavior and antibacterial properties can be achieved by samples anodized in the range of 60-75 V. Also improves the adsorption of BSA protein in bone healing and promotes osteoblast activity and osseointegration. Drug loading efficiency increases up to 60% via electrophoresis comparing the immersion method for anodized sample in 75 V. While electrophoresis does not affect the amount of vancomycin adsorption for lower voltages. Besides, the present study indicates that an anodized sample without drug loading has no antibacterial activity. Moreover, 28-days drug releasing from nanotubes is investigated by mathematical formula according to Fickian's law to find an effective dose of loaded drug.

Surface modification of polypropylene membrane for the removal of iodine using polydopamine chemistry

The development of stable and effective iodine removal systems would be highly desirable in addressing environmental issues relevant to water contamination. In the present research, a novel iodine adsorbent was synthesized by self-polymerization of dopamine (PDA) onto inert polypropylene (PP) membrane. This PP/PDA membrane was thoroughly characterized and its susrface propeties was analyzed by various analytical techniques indcluding field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH), contact angle, and surface free energy measurement. The PP/PDA membranes were subsequently used for batchwise removal of iodine at different temperatures (25-70 °C), pH (2-7), and surface areas (1-10 cm²) to understand the underlying adsorption phenomena and to estimate the membrane capacity for iodine uptake. The increase in temperature and pH both led to higher adsorption of iodine. The present approach showed a removal efficiency of over 75% for iodine using 10 cm² PP/PDA membrane (18.87 m² g^-1) within 2 h at moderate temperatures (∼50 °C) and pH > 4, about 15 fold compared to the PP control membrane. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models (R² > 0.99). This adsorbent can be recycled and reused at least six times with stable iodine adsorption. These findings were attributed to the homogenous monolayer adsorption of the iodide on the surface due to the presence of catechol and amine groups in the PP/PDA membrane. This study proposes an efficient adsorbent for iodine removal.

Development of an Ultra-Sensitive and Flexible Piezoresistive Flow Sensor Using Vertical Graphene Nanosheets

This paper suggests development of a flexible, lightweight, and ultra-sensitive piezoresistive flow sensor based on vertical graphene nanosheets (VGNs) with a mazelike structure. The sensor was thoroughly characterized for steady-state and oscillatory water flow monitoring applications. The results demonstrated a high sensitivity (103.91 mV (mm/s)^-1) and a very low-velocity detection threshold (1.127 mm s^-1) in steady-state flow monitoring. As one of many potential applications, we demonstrated that the proposed VGNs/PDMS flow sensor can closely mimic the vestibular hair cell sensors housed inside the semicircular canals (SCCs). As a proof of concept, magnetic resonance imaging of the human inner ear was conducted to measure the dimensions of the SCCs and to develop a 3D printed lateral semicircular canal (LSCC). The sensor was embedded into the artificial LSCC and tested for various physiological movements. The obtained results indicate that the flow sensor is able to distinguish minute changes in the rotational axis physical geometry, frequency, and amplitude. The success of this study paves the way for extending this technology not only to vestibular organ prosthesis but also to other applications such as blood/urine flow monitoring, intravenous therapy (IV), water leakage monitoring, and unmanned underwater robots through incorporation of the appropriate packaging of devices.

Fabrication of unconventional inertial microfluidic channels using wax 3D printing

Inertial microfluidics has emerged over the past decade as a powerful tool to accurately control cells and microparticles for diverse biological and medical applications. Many approaches have been proposed to date in order to increase the efficiency and accuracy of inertial microfluidic systems. However, the effects of channel cross-section and solution properties (Newtonian or non-Newtonian) have not been fully explored, primarily due to limitations in current microfabrication methods. In this study, we overcome many of these limitations using wax 3D printing technology and soft lithography through a novel workflow, which eliminates the need for the use of silicon lithography and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) bonding. We have shown that by adding dummy structures to reinforce the main channels, optimizing the gap between the dummy and main structures, and dissolving the support wax on a PDMS slab to minimize the additional handling steps, one can make various non-conventional microchannels. These substantially improve upon previous wax printed microfluidic devices where the working area falls into the realm of macrofluidics rather than microfluidics. Results revealed a surface roughness of 1.75 μm for the printed channels, which does not affect the performance of inertial microfluidic devices used in this study. Channels with complex cross-sections were fabricated and then analyzed to investigate the effects of viscoelasticity and superposition on the lateral migration of the particles. Finally, as a proof of concept, microcarriers were separated from human mesenchymal stem cells using an optimized channel with maximum cell-holding capacity, demonstrating the suitability of these microchannels in the bioprocessing industry.
