Capturing electron-driven chiral dynamics in UV-excited molecules

Chiral molecules, used in applications such as enantioselective photocatalysis1, circularly polarized light detection2 and emission3 and molecular switches4,5, exist in two geometrical configurations that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. These so-called (R) and (S) enantiomers exhibit different physical and chemical properties when interacting with other chiral entities. Attosecond technology might enable influence over such interactions, given that it can probe and even direct electron motion within molecules on the intrinsic electronic timescale6 and thereby control reactivity7-9. Electron currents in photoexcited chiral molecules have indeed been predicted to enable enantiosensitive molecular orientation10, but electron-driven chiral dynamics in neutral molecules have not yet been demonstrated owing to the lack of ultrashort, non-ionizing and perturbative light pulses. Here we use time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism (TR-PECD)11-15 with an unprecedented temporal resolution of 2.9 fs to map the coherent electronic motion initiated by ultraviolet (UV) excitation of neutral chiral molecules. We find that electronic beatings between Rydberg states lead to periodic modulations of the chiroptical response on the few-femtosecond timescale, showing a sign inversion in less than 10 fs. Calculations validate this and also confirm that the combination of the photoinduced chiral current with a circularly polarized probe pulse realizes an enantioselective filter of molecular orientations following photoionization. We anticipate that our approach will enable further investigations of ultrafast electron dynamics in chiral systems and reveal a route towards enantiosensitive charge-directed reactivity.

Far-Field Petahertz Sampling of Plasmonic Fields

The response of metal nanostructures to optical excitation leads to localized surface plasmon (LSP) generation with nanoscale field confinement driving applications in, for example, quantum optics and nanophotonics. Field sampling in the terahertz domain has had a tremendous impact on the ability to trace such collective excitations. Here, we extend such capabilities and introduce direct sampling of LSPs in a more relevant petahertz domain. The method allows to measure the LSP field in arbitrary nanostructures with subcycle precision. We demonstrate the technique for colloidal nanoparticles and compare the results to finite-difference time-domain calculations, which show that the build-up and dephasing of the plasmonic excitation can be resolved. Furthermore, we observe a reshaping of the spectral phase of the few-cycle pulse, and we demonstrate ad-hoc pulse shaping by tailoring the plasmonic sample. The methodology can be extended to single nanosystems and applied in exploring subcycle, attosecond phenomena.

X-ray generation by fs-laser processing of biological material

The use of ultrashort pulse lasers in medical treatments is increasing and is already an essential tool, particularly in the treatment of eyes, bones and skin. One of the main advantages of laser treatment is that it is fast and minimally invasive. Due to the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with matter, X-rays can be generated during the laser ablation process. This is important not only for the safety of the patient, but also for the practitioner to ensure that the legally permissible dose is not exceeded. Although our results do not raise safety concerns for existing clinical applications, they might impact future developments at higher peak powers. In order to provide guidance to laser users in the medical field, this paper examines the X-ray emission spectra and dose of several biological materials and describes their dependence on the laser pulse energy.

Dispersion-engineered multi-pass cell for single-stage post-compression of an ytterbium laser

Post-compression methods for ultrafast laser pulses typically face challenging limitations, including saturation effects and temporal pulse breakup, when large compression factors and broad bandwidths are targeted. To overcome these limitations, we exploit direct dispersion control in a gas-filled multi-pass cell, enabling, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, single-stage post-compression of 150 fs pulses and up to 250 µJ pulse energy from an ytterbium (Yb) fiber laser down to sub-20 fs. Dispersion-engineered dielectric cavity mirrors are used to achieve nonlinear spectral broadening dominated by self-phase modulation over large compression factors and bandwidths at 98% throughput. Our method opens a route toward single-stage post-compression of Yb lasers into the few-cycle regime.

Synchronized beamline at FLASH2 based on high-order harmonic generation for two-color dynamics studies

We present the design, integration, and operation of the novel vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) beamline installed at the free-electron laser (FEL) FLASH. The VUV source is based on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in gas and is driven by an optical laser system synchronized with the timing structure of the FEL. Ultrashort pulses in the spectral range from 10 to 40 eV are coupled with the FEL in the beamline FL26, which features a reaction microscope (REMI) permanent endstation for time-resolved studies of ultrafast dynamics in atomic and molecular targets. The connection of the high-pressure gas HHG source to the ultra-high vacuum FEL beamline requires a compact and reliable system, able to encounter the challenging vacuum requirements and coupling conditions. First commissioning results show the successful operation of the beamline, reaching a VUV focused beam size of about 20 µm at the REMI endstation. Proof-of-principle photo-electron momentum measurements in argon indicate the source capabilities for future two-color pump-probe experiments.

Real-time observation of a correlation-driven sub 3 fs charge migration in ionised adenine

Sudden ionisation of a relatively large molecule can initiate a correlation-driven process dubbed charge migration, where the electron density distribution is expected to rapidly move along the molecular backbone. Capturing this few-femtosecond or attosecond charge redistribution would represent the real-time observation of electron correlation in a molecule with the enticing prospect of following the energy flow from a single excited electron to the other coupled electrons in the system. Here, we report a time-resolved study of the correlation-driven charge migration process occurring in the nucleic-acid base adenine after ionisation with a 15-35 eV attosecond pulse. We find that the production of intact doubly charged adenine - via a shortly-delayed laser-induced second ionisation event - represents the signature of a charge inflation mechanism resulting from many-body excitation. This conclusion is supported by first-principles time-dependent simulations. These findings may contribute to the control of molecular reactivity at the electronic, few-femtosecond time scale.

Photoelectron spectroscopy of large water clusters ionized by an XUV comb

Detailed knowledge about photo-induced electron dynamics in water is key to the understanding of several biological and chemical mechanisms, in particular for those resulting from ionizing radiation. Here we report a method to obtain photoelectron spectra from neutral water clusters following ionization by an extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulse train, representing a first step towards a time-resolved analysis. Typically, a large background signal in the experiment arises from water monomers and carrier gas used in the cluster source. We report a protocol to quantify this background in order to eliminate it from the experimental spectra. We disentangle the accumulated XUV photoionization signal into contributions from the background species and the photoelectron spectra from the clusters. This proof-of-principle study demonstrates feasibility of background free photoelectron spectra of neutral water clusters ionized by XUV combs and paves the way for the detailed time-resolved analysis of the underlying dynamics.

Postcompression of picosecond pulses into the few-cycle regime

In this work, we demonstrate postcompression of 1.2 ps laser pulses to 13 fs via gas-based multipass spectral broadening. Our results yield a single-stage compression factor of about 40 at 200 W in-burst average power and a total compression factor >90 at reduced power. The employed scheme represents a route toward compact few-cycle sources driven by industrial-grade Yb:YAG lasers at high average power.

Ultrafast Quantum Interference in the Charge Migration of Tryptophan

Extreme-ultraviolet-induced charge migration in biorelevant molecules is a fundamental step in the complex path leading to photodamage. In this work we propose a simple interpretation of the charge migration recently observed in an attosecond pump-probe experiment on the amino acid tryptophan. We find that the decay of the prominent low-frequency spectral structure with increasing pump-probe delay is due to a quantum beating between two geometrically distinct, almost degenerate charge oscillations. Quantum beating is ubiquitous in these systems, and at least on the few-to-tens of femtosecond time scales, it may dominate over decoherence the line intensities of time-resolved spectra. We also address the experimentally observed phase shift in the charge oscillations of two different amino acids, tryptophan and phenylalanine. Our results indicate that a beyond mean-field treatment of the electron dynamics is necessary to reproduce the correct behavior.

Molecular movie of ultrafast coherent rotational dynamics of OCS

Recording molecular movies on ultrafast timescales has been a longstanding goal for unravelling detailed information about molecular dynamics. Here we present the direct experimental recording of very-high-resolution and -fidelity molecular movies over more than one-and-a-half periods of the laser-induced rotational dynamics of carbonylsulfide (OCS) molecules. Utilising the combination of single quantum-state selection and an optimised two-pulse sequence to create a tailored rotational wavepacket, an unprecedented degree of field-free alignment, 〈cos2θ2D〉 = 0.96 (〈cos2θ〉 = 0.94) is achieved, exceeding the theoretical limit for single-pulse alignment. The very rich experimentally observed quantum dynamics is fully recovered by the angular probability distribution obtained from solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with parameters refined against the experiment. The populations and phases of rotational states in the retrieved time-dependent three-dimensional wavepacket rationalises the observed very high degree of alignment.

Atomic-resolution imaging of carbonyl sulfide by laser-induced electron diffraction

Measurements on the strong-field ionization of carbonyl sulfide molecules by short, intense, 2 µm wavelength laser pulses are presented from experiments where angle-resolved photoelectron distributions were recorded with a high-energy velocity map imaging spectrometer, designed to reach a maximum kinetic energy of 500 eV. The laser-field-free elastic-scattering cross section of carbonyl sulfide was extracted from the measurements and is found in good agreement with previous experiments, performed using conventional electron diffraction. By comparing our measurements to the results of calculations, based on the quantitative rescattering theory, the bond lengths and molecular geometry were extracted from the experimental differential cross sections to a precision better than ±5 pm and in agreement with the known values.

Charge migration in photo-ionized aromatic amino acids

Attosecond pump-probe spectroscopy is a unique tool for the direct observation of the light-activated electronic motion in molecules and it offers the possibility to capture the first instants of a chemical reaction. Recently, advances in attosecond technology allowed the charge migration processes to be revealed in biochemically relevant molecules. Although this purely electronic process might be key for a future chemistry at the electron time scale, the influence of this ultrafast charge flow on the reactivity of a molecule is still debated. In this work, we exploit extreme ultraviolet attosecond pulses to activate charge migration in two aromatic amino acids, namely phenylalanine and tryptophan. Advanced numerical calculations are performed to interpret the experimental data and to discuss the effects of the nuclear dynamics on the activated quantum coherences. By comparing the experimental results obtained in the two molecules, we show that the presence of different functional groups strongly affects the fragmentation pathways, as well as the charge rearrangement. The observed charge dynamics indeed present peculiar aspects, including characteristic periodicities and decoherence times. Numerical results indicate that, even for a very large molecule such as tryptophan, the quantum coherences can survive the nuclear dynamics for several femtoseconds. These results open new and important perspectives for a deeper understanding of the photo-induced charge dynamics, as a promising tool to control the reactivity of bio-relevant molecules via photo-excitation. Generation of deep ultraviolet sub-2-fs pulses

We demonstrate the generation of few-cycle deep ultraviolet pulses via frequency upconversion of 5-fs near-infrared pulses in argon using a laser-fabricated gas cell. The measured spectrum extends from 210 to 340 nm, corresponding to a transform-limited pulse duration of 1.45 fs. We extract from a dispersion-free second-order cross-correlation measurement a pulse duration of 1.9 fs, defining a new record in the deep ultraviolet spectral range.

Strong-field physics in the molecular frame

Laser-aligned carbonyl-sulfide molecules were strong-field ionized using mid-infrared light. Investigating the strong-field effects in the molecular frame allowed to add novel facets to the understanding of the intrinsic nature of strong-field physics.

A beamline for attosecond UV pump - XUV probe experiments

A time resolved setup combining sub-2fs UV pump pulses with attosecond XUV probe pulses is presented. This scheme will allow the UV photo-induced electron dynamics in bio-chemically relevant molecules to be investigated with unprecedented time resolution.

Generation and complete temporal characterization of 5-fs EUV pulses

Extreme-ultraviolet pulses as short as 5 fs, produced by high-order harmonic generation and selected by a time-delay compensated monochromator, were fully reconstructed thanks to an advanced ptychographic technique, while most commonly used reconstruction methods fail. These pulses constitute the shortest extreme ultraviolet pulses ever achieved via a time-delay compensated monochromator.

Ultrafast Hydrogen Migration in Photoionized Glycine

Hydrogen migration in the glycine cation has been investigated using a combination of a short train of attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses with few-optical-cycle near-infrared pulses. The yield of the photofragments produced has been measured as a function of pump-probe delay. These time-dependent measurements reveal the presence of a hydrogen migration process occurring in 48 fs. Previous mass spectrometric experiments and theoretical calculations have allowed us to identify the conformations and cation states involved in the process induced by the broad band extreme ultraviolet radiation.

Attosecond Pump-Probe Spectroscopy of Charge Dynamics in Tryptophan

Attosecond pump-probe experiments performed in small molecules have allowed tracking charge dynamics in the natural time scale of electron motion. That this is also possible in biologically relevant molecules is still a matter of debate, because the large number of available nuclear degrees of freedom might destroy the coherent charge dynamics induced by the attosecond pulse. Here we investigate extreme ultraviolet-induced charge dynamics in the amino acid tryptophan. We find that, although nuclear motion and nonadiabatic effects introduce some decoherence in the moving electron wave packet, these do not significantly modify the coherence induced by the attosecond pulse during the early stages of the dynamics, at least for molecules in their equilibrium geometry. Our conclusions are based on elaborate theoretical calculations and the experimental observation of sub-4 fs dynamics, which can only be reasonably assigned to electronic motion. Hence, attosecond pump-probe spectroscopy appears as a promising approach to induce and image charge dynamics in complex molecules.

Plasma and Tissue Distribution of Adriamycin in Patients with Pelvic Cancer

The levels of adriamycin in plasma, ascitic fluid and normal and neoplastic tissues sampled during surgery of 3 patients with advanced pelvic cancer were measured by fluorimetry. The highest content of fluorescent compounds was found in tumoral masses in necrotic or scarcely viable tissue; viable and invasive tumor areas scored fluorescence levels comparable with normal adnexa. Ascitic fluid contained levels of fluorescence comparable to the last observed phase of plasma levels. Adipose and cutaneous tissue scored the lowest concentrations.

Few-femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet pulses fully reconstructed by a ptychographic technique

Sub-10-fs pulses tunable in the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region are particularly important in many research fields: from atomic and molecular spectroscopy to the study of relaxation processes in solids and transition phase processes, from holography to free-electron laser injection. A crucial prerequisite for all applications is the accurate measurement of the temporal characteristics of these pulses. To fulfill this purpose, many phase retrieval algorithms have been successfully applied to reconstruct XUV attosecond pulses. Nevertheless, their extension to XUV femtosecond pulses is not trivial and has never been investigated/reported so far. We demonstrate that ultrashort XUV pulses, produced by high-order harmonic generation, spectrally filtered by a time-delay compensated monochromator, can be fully characterized, in terms of temporal intensity and phase, by employing the ptychographic reconstruction technique while other common reconstruction algorithms fail. This allows us to report on the generation and complete temporal characterization of XUV pulses with duration down to 5 fs, which constitute the shortest XUV pulse ever achieved via a time-delay compensated monochromator.

Time-Resolved Measurement of Interatomic Coulombic Decay Induced by Two-Photon Double Excitation of Ne_{2}

The hitherto unexplored two-photon doubly excited states [Ne^{*}(2p^{-1}3s)]_{2} were experimentally identified using the seeded, fully coherent, intense extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser FERMI. These states undergo ultrafast interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD), which predominantly produces singly ionized dimers. In order to obtain the rate of ICD, the resulting yield of Ne_{2}^{+} ions was recorded as a function of delay between the extreme ultraviolet pump and UV probe laser pulses. The extracted lifetimes of the long-lived doubly excited states, 390(-130/+450)  fs, and of the short-lived ones, less than 150 fs, are in good agreement with ab initio quantum mechanical calculations.

Slow Interatomic Coulombic Decay of Multiply Excited Neon Clusters

Ne clusters (∼5000  atoms) were resonantly excited (2p→3s) by intense free electron laser (FEL) radiation at FERMI. Such multiply excited clusters can decay nonradiatively via energy exchange between at least two neighboring excited atoms. Benefiting from the precise tunability and narrow bandwidth of seeded FEL radiation, specific sites of the Ne clusters were probed. We found that the relaxation of cluster surface atoms proceeds via a sequence of interatomic or intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) processes while ICD of bulk atoms is additionally affected by the surrounding excited medium via inelastic electron scattering. For both cases, cluster excitations relax to atomic states prior to ICD, showing that this kind of ICD is rather slow (picosecond range). Controlling the average number of excitations per cluster via the FEL intensity allows a coarse tuning of the ICD rate.

Self-referenced spectral interferometry for single-shot measurement of sub-5-fs pulses

We demonstrate a novel approach for the extension of self-referenced spectral interferometry to the temporal characterization of few-optical cycle pulses. The new experimental setup is characterized by low dispersion and a collinear geometry. 4-fs pulses have been characterized by performing single-shot measurements, with high dynamic range on a broad temporal region. An independent measurement of the pulse duration, obtained by using attosecond streaking, allowed us to cross-check the experimental technique.

High-throughput beamline for attosecond pulses based on toroidal mirrors with microfocusing capabilities

We have developed a novel attosecond beamline designed for attosecond-pump/attosecond probe experiments. Microfocusing of the Extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) radiation is obtained by using a coma-compensated optical configuration based on the use of three toroidal mirrors controlled by a genetic algorithm. Trains of attosecond pulses are generated with a measured peak intensity of about 3 × 10(11) W/cm(2).

In situ measurement of nonlinear carrier-envelope phase changes in hollow fiber compression

We demonstrate a simple and robust single-shot interferometric technique that allows the in situ measurement of intensity-dependent phase changes experienced by ultrashort laser pulses upon nonlinear propagation. The technique is applied to the characterization of carrier-envelope phase noise in hollow fiber compressors both in the pressure gradient and in the static cell configuration. Measurements performed simultaneously with conventional f-to-2f interferometers before and after compression indicate that the noise emerging in the waveguide adds up arithmetically to the phase noise of the amplifier, thus being strongly correlated to the phase noise of the pulses coupled into the compressor.

Carrier-envelope phase effects of a single attosecond pulse in two-color photoionization

The attosecond streak camera method is usually implemented to characterize the temporal phase and amplitude of isolated attosecond pulses produced by high-order harmonic generation. This approach, however, does not provide any information about the carrier-envelope phase of the attosecond pulses. We demonstrate that the photoelectron spectra generated by an attosecond waveform and an intense synchronized infrared field are sensitive to the electric field of the attosecond pulse. The dependence on the carrier-envelope phase of the attosecond pulse is understood in terms of the coherent superposition of two photoelectron wave packets. This effect suggests an experimentally feasible method for complete reconstruction of attosecond waveforms.

Micro-focusing of attosecond pulses by grazing-incidence toroidal mirrors

The design of optical systems for micro-focusing of extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses through grazing-incidence toroidal mirrors is presented. Aim of the proposed configuration is to provide a micro-focused image through a high demagnification of the XUV source with the following characteristics: i) almost negligible aberrations; ii) long exit arm to easily accommodate at the output the experimental setups required for the applications of the focused attosecond pulses; iii) possibility to have an intermediate region where the XUV beam is collimated, in order to insert a plane split-mirror for the generation of two XUV pulse replicas to be used in a XUV-pump/XUV-probe setup. We present the analytical and numerical study of two optical configurations characterized by two sections based on the use of toroidal mirrors. The first section provides a demagnified image of the source in an intermediate focus that is free from defocusing but has a large coma aberration. The second section consists of a relay mirror that is mounted in Z-shaped geometry with respect to the previous one, in order to give a stigmatic image with a coma that is opposite to that provided by the first section. An example is provided to demonstrate the capability to achieve spot sizes in the 5-15 μm range with a demagnification higher than 10 in a compact envelope.

Observation of Ultrafast Charge Migration in an Amino Acid

We present the first direct measurement of ultrafast charge migration in a biomolecular building block - the amino acid phenylalanine. Using an extreme ultraviolet pulse of 1.5 fs duration to ionize molecules isolated in the gas phase, the location of the resulting hole was probed by a 6 fs visible/near-infrared pulse. By measuring the yield of a doubly charged ion as a function of the delay between the two pulses, the positive hole was observed to migrate to one end of the cation within 30 fs. This process is likely to originate from even faster coherent charge oscillations in the molecule being dephased by bond stretching which eventually localizes the final position of the charge. This demonstration offers a clear template for observing and controlling this phenomenon in the future.

Stopping light in two dimensional quasicrystalline waveguides

The introduction of defects in photonic lattices generally allows to control the localization and the propagation of light. While point defects are conventionally used in order to obtain localized photonic states, linear defects are introduced for waveguiding EM waves. In this work we demonstrate the possibility of obtaining localized states also in a waveguiding configuration, by using quasicrystalline lattices. This result opens a new range of possibilities in designing optical circuits, in which the localization-propagation switch is easly obtainable by mechanical or opto-electric methods.
