Computed Gyration Tensors of Knotted Chiral and Achiral Topological Stereoisomers of C60 Cyclocarbons

The electronic origins of the computed optical rotations of the simplest chiral and achiral chemical knots with comparatively simple compositions and large, anticipated magnetoelectric polarizabilities are provided. Linear response theory (LRT) is used to calculate the gyration at 1064 nm of two knotted polyyne chains, topological stereoisomers of cyclo[60]carbon. One isomer is analogous to the trefoil knot with approximate D3 symmetry and the other to the figure eight knot with approximate S4 symmetry. The response in each case can be attributed largely to the magnetic dipole term that arises in a near degenerate E-like excited state. An oriented achiral figure eight knot is as optically active in some directions as the chiral knot in any direction, and its absolute eigenvalues are larger.

ROY Crystallization on Poly(ethylene) Fibers, a Model for Bed Net Crystallography

Many long-lasting insecticidal bed nets for protection against disease vectors consist of poly(ethylene) fibers in which insecticide is incorporated during manufacture. Insecticide molecules diffuse from within the supersaturated polymers to surfaces where they become bioavailable to insects and often crystallize, a process known as blooming. Recent studies revealed that contact insecticides can be highly polymorphic. Moreover, insecticidal activity is polymorph-dependent, with forms having a higher crystal free energy yielding faster insect knockdown and mortality. Consequently, the crystallographic characterization of insecticide crystals that form on fibers is critical to understanding net function and improving net performance. Structural characterization of insecticide crystals on bed net fiber surfaces, let alone their polymorphs, has been elusive owing to the minute size of the crystals, however. Using the highly polymorphous compound ROY (5-methyl-2-[(2-nitrophenyl)-amino]thiophene-3-carbonitrile) as a proxy for insecticide crystallization, we investigated blooming and crystal formation on the surface of extruded poly(ethylene) fibers containing ROY. The blooming rates, tracked from the time of extrusion, were determined by UV-vis spectroscopy after successive washes. Six crystalline polymorphs (of the 13 known) were observed on poly(ethylene) fiber surfaces, and they were identified and characterized by Raman microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and 3D electron diffraction. These observations reveal that the crystallization and phase behavior of polymorphs forming on poly(ethylene) fibers is complex and dynamic. The characterization of blooming and microcrystals underscores the importance of bed net crystallography for the optimization of bed net performance.

Coherence in Polycrystalline Thin Films of Twisted Molecular Crystals

Helicoidal crystallites in rhythmically banded spherulites manifest spectacular optical patterns in small molecules and polymers. It is shown that concentric optical bands indicating crystallographic orientations typically lose coherence (in-phase twisting) with growth from the center of nucleation. Here, coherence is shown to increase as the twist period decreases for seven molecular crystals grown from the melt. This dependence was correlated to crystallite fiber thickness and length, as well as crystallite branching frequency, a parameter that was extracted from scanning electron micrographs, and supported by numerical simulations. Hole mobilities for 2,5-didodecyl-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione (DPP-C12) measured by using organic field-effect transistors demonstrated that more incoherent boundaries between optical bands in spherulites lead to higher charge transport for films with the same twist period. This was rationalized by combining our growth model with electrodynamic simulations. This work illustrates the emergence of complexity in crystallization processes (spherulite formation) that arises in the extra variable of helicoidal radial twisting. The details of the patterns analyzed here link the added complexity in crystal growth to the electronic and optical properties of the thin films.

Leveling up Organic Semiconductors with Crystal Twisting

The performance of crystalline organic semiconductors depends on the solid-state structure, especially the orientation of the conjugated components with respect to device platforms. Often, crystals can be engineered by modifying chromophore substituents through synthesis. Meanwhile, dissymetry is necessary for high-tech applications like chiral sensing, optical telecommunications, and data storage. The synthesis of dissymmetric molecules is a labor-intensive exercise that might be undermined because common processing methods offer little control over orientation. Crystal twisting has emerged as a generalizable method for processing organic semiconductors and offers unique advantages, such as patterning of physical and chemical properties and chirality that arises from mesoscale twisting. The precession of crystal orientations can enrich performance because achiral molecules in achiral space groups suddenly become candidates for the aforementioned technologies that require dissymetry.

Comparative rotatory power of bent and twisted polyynes

Linear polyynes of the formula C18 H2 (symmetry D∞h ) were bent in silico by progressively introducing CCC angles less than 180°. The bent structures (symmetry C2v ) were then twisted by introducing torsion angles across the CCCC segments by as much as 60°. The gyration tensors of these 19 structures (linear, bent, and twisted) were computed by linear response methods. Bending is massively generative of optical activity in oriented structures, even achiral structures, whereas twisting in conjunction with bending, serves to linearize the molecules and diminish maximally observable optical activity. This computational exercise is intended to unbind the infelicitous linkage of optical activity and chirality, which is only meaningful in isotropic media. Although bent structures are not optically active in solution-the spatial average of the optical activity is necessarily zero-solution measurements that deliver the spatial averages are a special class of measurements, albeit the overwhelmingly most common chiroptical measurements, that prejudice our common understanding of how π-conjugated structures generate gyration. Bending is far more effective than twisting at generating optical activity along some directions for oriented structures. The respective contributions from the transition electric dipole-magnetic dipole polarizability and the transition electric dipole-electric quadrupole polarizability are compared.

Self-Patterning Tetrathiafulvalene Crystalline Films

Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) crystals grown from the melt are organized as spherulites in which helicoidal fibrils growing radially from the nucleation center twist in concert with one another. Alternating bright and dark concentric bands are apparent when films are viewed between crossed polarizers, indicating an alternating pattern of crystallographic faces exposed at the film surface. Band-dependent reorganization of the TTF crystals was observed during exposure to methanol vapor. Crystalline growth appears on bright bands at the expense of the dark bands. After a 24 h period of exposure to methanol vapor, the original spherulites were completely restructured, and the films comprise isolated, concentric circles of crystallites whose orientations are determined by the initial TTF crystal fibril orientation. While the surface of these outgrowths appears faceted and smooth, cross-sectional SEM images revealed a semiporous inner structure, suggesting solvent-vapor-induced recrystallization. Collectively, these results show that crystal twisting can be used to rhythmically redistribute material. Crystal twisting is a common and often controllable phenomenon independent of molecular or crystal structure and therefore offers a generalizable path to spontaneous pattern formation in a wide range of materials.

Characterization of Chiral Nanostructured Surfaces Made via Colloidal Lithography

Optically anisotropic materials were produced via colloidal lithography and characterized using scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), confocal microscopy, and polarimetry. A compact hexagonal array mask composed of silica sub-micron particles was fabricated via the Langmuir-Blodgett self-assembly technique. Subsequently, the mask pattern was transferred onto monocrystalline silicon and commercial glass substrates using ion beam etching in a vacuum. Varying the azimuthal angle while etching at oblique incidence carved screw-like shaped pillars into the substrates, resulting in heterochiral structures depending on the azimuthal angle direction. To enhance the material's optical properties through plasmon resonance, gold films were deposited onto the pillars. Polarimetric measurements were realized at normal and oblique incidences, showing that the etching directions have a clear influence on the value of the linear birefringence and linear dichroism. The polarimetric properties, especially the chiroptical responses, increased with the increase in the angle of incidence.

Insecticidal and Repellent Properties of Rapid-Acting Fluorine-Containing Compounds against Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes

The development of safe and potent insecticides remains an integral part of a multifaceted strategy to effectively control human-disease-transmitting insect vectors. Incorporating fluorine can dramatically alter the physiochemical properties and bioavailability of insecticides. For example, 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-fluorophenyl)ethane (DFDT)─a difluoro congener of trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT)─was demonstrated previously to be 10-fold less toxic to mosquitoes than DDT in terms of LD50 values, but it exhibited a 4-fold faster knockdown. Described herein is the discovery of fluorine-containing 1-aryl-2,2,2-trichloro-ethan-1-ols (FTEs, for fluorophenyl-trichloromethyl-ethanols). FTEs, particularly per-fluorophenyl-trichloromethyl-ethanol (PFTE), exhibited rapid knockdown not only against Drosophila melanogaster but also against susceptible and resistant Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, major vectors of Dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and Chikungunya viruses. The R enantiomer of any chiral FTE, synthesized enantioselectively, exhibited faster knockdown than its corresponding S enantiomer. PFTE does not prolong the opening of mosquito sodium channels that are characteristic of the action of DDT and pyrethroid insecticides. In addition, pyrethroid/DDT-resistant Ae. aegypti strains having enhanced P450-mediated detoxification and/or carrying sodium channel mutations that confer knockdown resistance were not cross-resistant to PFTE. These results indicate a mechanism of PFTE insecticidal action distinct from that of pyrethroids or DDT. Furthermore, PFTE elicited spatial repellency at concentrations as low as 10 ppm in a hand-in-cage assay. PFTE and MFTE were found to possess low mammalian toxicity. These results suggest the substantial potential of FTEs as a new class of compounds for controlling insect vectors, including pyrethroid/DDT-resistant mosquitoes. Further investigations of FTE insecticidal and repellency mechanisms could provide important insights into how incorporation of fluorine influences the rapid lethality and mosquito sensing.

Overcoming insecticide resistance in Anopheles mosquitoes by using faster-acting solid forms of deltamethrin

BACKGROUND

Controlling malaria-transmitting Anopheles mosquitoes with pyrethroid insecticides is becoming increasingly challenging because of widespread resistance amongst vector populations. The development of new insecticides and insecticidal formulations is time consuming and costly, however. A more active crystalline form of deltamethrin, prepared by heating the commercial crystalline form, previously was reported to be 12-times faster acting against susceptible North American Anopheles quadrimaculatus mosquitoes. Herein the potential for heat-activated deltamethrin dispersed on chalk to overcome various resistance mechanisms amongst five West African Anopheles strains is investigated, and its long-term sustained lethality evaluated.

METHODS

The more active deltamethrin form was generated in a commercial dust containing deltamethrin by heating the material as purchased. Tarsal contact bioassays were conducted to investigate its efficacy, potency, and speed of action against resistant Anopheles populations compared to the commercially available form of deltamethrin dust.

RESULTS

In all cases, D-Fense Dust heated to generate the more active form of deltamethrin was substantially more effective than the commercially available formulation. 100% of both Banfora M and Kisumu populations were knocked down 10 min post-exposure with no recovery afterwards. Gaoua-ara and Tiefora strains exhibited 100% knockdown within 15 min, and the VK7 2014 strain exhibited 100% knockdown within 20 min. In all cases, 100% mortality was observed 24 h post-exposure. Conversely, the commercial formulation (unheated) resulted in less than 4% mortality amongst VK7 2014, Banfora, and Gaoua-ara populations by 24 h, and Tiefora and Kisumu mosquitoes experienced 14 and 47% mortality by 24 h, respectively. The heat-activated dust maintained comparable efficacy 13 months after heating.

CONCLUSIONS

The heat-activated form of commercial deltamethrin D-Fense Dust outperformed the material as purchased, dramatically increasing efficacy against all tested pyrethroid-resistant strains. This increase in lethality was retained for 13 months of storage under ambient conditions in the laboratory. Higher energy forms of commonly used insecticides may be employed to overcome various resistance mechanisms seen in African Anopheles mosquitoes through more rapid uptake of insecticide molecules from their respective solid surfaces. That is, resistant mosquitoes can be killed with an insecticide to which they are resistant without altering the molecular composition of the insecticide.

Mechanical properties and peculiarities of molecular crystals

In the last century, molecular crystals functioned predominantly as a means for determining the molecular structures via X-ray diffraction, albeit as the century came to a close the response of molecular crystals to electric, magnetic, and light fields revealed that the physical properties of molecular crystals were as rich as the diversity of molecules themselves. In this century, the mechanical properties of molecular crystals have continued to enhance our understanding of the colligative responses of weakly bound molecules to internal frustration and applied forces. Here, the authors review the main themes of research that have developed in recent decades, prefaced by an overview of the particular considerations that distinguish molecular crystals from traditional materials such as metals and ceramics. Many molecular crystals will deform themselves as they grow under some conditions. Whether they respond to intrinsic stress or external forces or interactions among the fields of growing crystals remains an open question. Photoreactivity in single crystals has been a leading theme in organic solid-state chemistry; however, the focus of research has been traditionally on reaction stereo- and regio-specificity. However, as light-induced chemistry builds stress in crystals anisotropically, all types of motions can be actuated. The correlation between photochemistry and the responses of single crystals-jumping, twisting, fracturing, delaminating, rocking, and rolling-has become a well-defined field of research in its own right: photomechanics. The advancement of our understanding requires theoretical and high-performance computations. Computational crystallography not only supports interpretations of mechanical responses, but predicts the responses itself. This requires the engagement of classical force-field based molecular dynamics simulations, density functional theory-based approaches, and the use of machine learning to divine patterns to which algorithms can be better suited than people. The integration of mechanics with the transport of electrons and photons is considered for practical applications in flexible organic electronics and photonics. Dynamic crystals that respond rapidly and reversibly to heat and light can function as switches and actuators. Progress in identifying efficient shape-shifting crystals is also discussed. Finally, the importance of mechanical properties to milling and tableting of pharmaceuticals in an industry still dominated by active ingredients composed of small molecule crystals is reviewed. A dearth of data on the strength, hardness, Young's modulus, and fracture toughness of molecular crystals underscores the need for refinement of measurement techniques and conceptual tools. The need for benchmark data is emphasized throughout.

Collimating the growth of twisted crystals of achiral compounds

A great proportion of molecular crystals can be made to grow as twisted fibrils. Typically, this requires high crystallization driving forces that lead to spherulitic textures. Here, it is shown how micron size channels fabricated from poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) serve to collimate the circular polycrystalline growth fronts of optically banded spherulites of twisted crystals of three compounds, coumarin, 2,5-bis(3-dodecyl-2-thienyl)-thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole, and tetrathiafulvalene. The relationships between helicoidal pitch, growth front coherence, and channel width are measured. As channels spill into open spaces, collimated crystals "diffract" via small angle branching. On the other hand, crystals grown together from separate channels whose bands are out of phase ultimately become a single in-phase bundle of fibrils by a cooperative mechanism yet unknown. The isolation of a single twist sense in individual channels is described. We forecast that such chiral molecular crystalline channels may function as chiral optical wave guides.

A periodic-like table of space groups

There are about 100 chemical elements, and 200 space groups, rounding to the nearest hundreds. The elements, by virtue of the iconic periodic table, which hangs in schoolrooms worldwide, are part of our common culture. Few on the outside of solid-state science and discrete mathematics know of the remarkable enumeration of the space groups and how they organize solids, the chemical elements included, that can be conformed to translationally periodic lattices in three dimensions. Perhaps the comparative inaccessibility of space groups to non-specialists can be attributed to the absence of a single chart that captures and organizes the space groups in a glance, as does the periodic table for the chemical elements? Here is designed a periodic-like table of the space groups. The symmorphic space groups are organized as the coordinates of two non-linear, non-orthogonal axes that capture the point group symmetry and the order of the group, the multiplicity of general positions. The related non-symmorphic groups are treated as 'isotopes' of the symmorphic groups and are enumerated with a subscript. The intent is to inspire better designs and to bring the crystallographic space groups to the attention of a wider audience.

Extracting Pure Circular Dichroism from Hierarchically Structured CdS Magic Cluster Films

Chiroptically active, hierarchically structured materials are difficult to accurately characterize due to linear anisotropic contributions (i.e., linear dichroism (LD) and linear birefringence (LB)) and parasitic ellipticities that produce artifactual circular dichroism (CD) signals, in addition to chiral analyte contributions ranging from molecular-scale clusters to micron-sized assemblies. Recently, we have shown that CdS magic-sized clusters (MSC) can self-assemble into ordered films that have a hierarchical structure spanning seven orders of length-scale. These films have a strong CD response, but the chiral origins are obfuscated by the hierarchical architecture and LDLB contributions. Here, we derive and demonstrate a method for extracting the "pure" CD signal (CD generated by structural dissymmetry) from hierarchical MSC films and identified the chiral origin. The theory behind the method is derived using Mueller matrix and Stokes vector conventions and verified experimentally before being applied to hierarchical MSC and nanoparticle films with varying macroscopic orderings. Each film's extracted "true CD" shares a bisignate profile aligned with the exciton peak, indicating the assemblies adopt a chiral arrangement and form an exciton coupled system. Interestingly, the linearly aligned MSC film possesses one of the highest g-factors (0.05) among semiconducting nanostructures reported. Additionally, we find that films with similar electronic transition dipole alignment can possess greatly different g-factors, indicating chirality change rather than anisotropy is the cause of the difference in the CD signal. The difference in g-factor is controllable via film evaporation geometry. This study provides a simple means to measure "true" CD and presents an example of experimentally understanding chiroptic interactions in hierarchical nanostructures.

Charge Transport in Twisted Organic Semiconductor Crystals of Modulated Pitch

Many molecular crystals (approximately one third) grow as twisted, helicoidal ribbons from the melt, and this preponderance is even higher in restricted classes of materials, for instance, charge-transfer complexes. Previously, twisted crystallites of such complexes present an increase in carrier mobilities. Here, the effect of twisting on charge mobility is better analyzed for a monocomponent organic semiconductor, 2,5-bis(3-dodecyl-2-thienyl)-thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (BDT), that forms twisted crystals with varied helicoidal pitches and makes possible a correlation of twist strength with carrier mobility. Films are analyzed by X-ray scattering and Mueller matrix polarimetry to characterize the microscale organization of the polycrystalline ensembles. Carrier mobilities of organic field-effect transistors are five times higher when the crystals are grown with the smallest pitches (most twisted), compared to those with the largest pitches, along the fiber elongation direction. A tenfold increase is observed along the perpendicular direction. Simulation of electrical potential based on scanning electron microscopy images and density functional theory suggests that the twisting-enhanced mobility is mainly controlled by the fiber organization in the film. A greater number of tightly packed twisted fibers separated by numerous smaller gaps permit better charge transport over the film surface compared to fewer big crystallites separated by larger gaps.

Disrupting Crystal Growth through Molecular Recognition: Designer Therapies for Kidney Stone Prevention

Aberrant crystallization within the human body can lead to several disease states or adverse outcomes, yet much remains to be understood about the critical stages leading to these events, which can include crystal nucleation and growth, crystal aggregation, and the adhesion of crystals to cells. Kidney stones, which are aggregates of single crystals with physiological origins, are particularly illustrative of pathological crystallization, with 10% of the U.S. population experiencing at least one stone occurrence in their lifetimes. The human record of kidney stones is more than 2000 years old, as noted by Hippocrates in his renowned oath and much later by Robert Hooke in his treatise Micrographia. William Hyde Wollaston, who was a physician, chemist, physicist, and crystallographer, was fascinated with stones, leading him to discover an unusual stone that he described in 1810 as cystic oxide, later corrected to cystine. Despite this long history, however, a fundamental understanding of the stages of stone formation and the rational design of therapies for stone prevention have remained elusive.This Account reviews discoveries and advances from our laboratories that have unraveled the complex crystal growth mechanisms of l-cystine, which forms l-cystine kidney stones in at least 20 000 individuals in the U.S. alone. Although l-cystine stones affect fewer individuals than common calcium oxalate stones, they are usually larger, recur more frequently, and are more likely to cause chronic kidney disease. Real-time in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) reveals that the crystal growth of hexagonal l-cystine is characterized by a complex mechanism in which six interlaced anisotropic spirals grow synchronously, emanating from a single screw dislocation to generate a micromorphology with the appearance of stacked hexagonal islands. In contrast, proximal heterochiral dislocations produce features that appear to be spirals but actually are closed loops, akin to a Frank-Read source. These unusual and aesthetic growth patterns can be explained by the coincidence of the dislocation Burgers vector and the crystallographic 6₁ screw axis. Inhibiting l-cystine crystal growth is key to preventing stone formation. Decades of studies of "tailor-made additives", which are imposter molecules that closely resemble the solute and bind to crystal faces through molecular recognition, have demonstrated their effects on crystal properties such as morphology and polymorphism. The ability to visualize crystal growth in real time by AFM enables quantitative measurements of step velocities and, by extension, the effect of prospective inhibitors on growth rates, which can then be used to deduce inhibition mechanisms. Investigations with a wide range of prospective inhibitors revealed the importance of precise molecular recognition for binding l-cystine imposters to crystal sites, which results in step pinning and the inhibition of step advancement as well as the growth of bulk crystals. Moreover, select inhibitors of crystal growth, measured in vitro, reduce or eliminate stone formation in knockout mouse models of cystinuria, promising a new pathway to l-cystine stone prevention. These observations have wide-ranging implications for the design of therapies based on tailor-made additives for diseases associated with aberrant crystallization, from disease-related stones to "xenostones" that form in vivo because of the crystallization of low-solubility therapeutic agents such as antiretroviral agents.

Imidacloprid Crystal Polymorphs for Disease Vector Control and Pollinator Protection

Imidacloprid, the world's leading insecticide, has been approved recently for controlling infectious disease vectors; yet, in agricultural settings, it has been implicated in the frightening decline of pollinators. This argues for strategies that sharply reduce the environmental impact of imidacloprid. When used as a contact insecticide, the effectiveness of imidacloprid relies on physical contact between its crystal surfaces and insect tarsi. Herein, seven new imidacloprid crystal polymorphs are reported, adding to two known forms. Anticipating that insect uptake of imidacloprid molecules would depend on the respective free energies of crystal polymorph surfaces, measurements of insect knockdown times for the metastable crystal forms were as much as nine times faster acting than the commercial form against Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex mosquitoes as well as Drosophila (fruit flies). These results suggest that replacement of commercially available imidacloprid crystals (a.k.a. Form I) in space-spraying with any one of three new polymorphs, Forms IV, VI, IX, would suppress vector-borne disease transmission while reducing environmental exposure and harm to nontarget organisms.

Poincaré and his polarization sphere

In a text (1892) on light, Jules Henri Poincaré introduced a geometrical device for tracking the polarization of state of light interacting with matter. Poincaré first mapped all polarization ellipses onto the surface of sphere and changes of state were represented as rotations from one point to another about prescribed axes depending on linear optical properties of the medium. Here, we consider how Poincaré, the mathematician, invented his sphere. Poincaré's professional activities in the service of geodesy appear at first glance to provide a borrowed geometry for his one-to-one mapping of polarization ellipses to global lines of latitude and longitude. However, this association falls apart in the face of a close reading of Poincaré's biography and his influences, especially the research interests of his teachers from the École Polytechnique and the Écoles de Mines. The work of Tissot and Mallard on distortion ellipses in cartography and the etiology of optical activity in crystals, respectively, together with Poincaré's own study of the qualitative theory of differential equations, provide the iconography of, and motivation for, the sphere. Whether Poincaré's mentors were unwitting partners in the invention of the sphere-it is impossible to be sure-Poincaré's otherworldly geometric sensibilities carried him through isometries (rotations) on hyperbolic planes and beyond. The apparent ingenuity behind Poincaré's sphere is diminished in comparison to his fulsome achievements. Moreover, Poincaré's considerations of the psychology of invention further emphasize that sometimes great ideas arrive to those fortunate to receive them by mechanisms that resist interpretation.

Chiroptical anisotropy of crystals and molecules

Optical activity, a foundational part of chemistry, is not restricted to chiral molecules although generations have been instructed otherwise. A more inclusive view of optical activity is valuable because it clarifies structure-property relationships however, this view only comes into focus in measurements of oriented molecules, commonly found in crystals. Unfortunately, measurements of optical rotatory dispersion or circular dichroism in anisotropic single crystals have challenged scientists for more than two centuries. New polarimetric methods for unpacking the optical activity of crystals in general directions are still needed. Such methods are reviewed as well as some of the 'nourishment' they provide, thereby inviting to new researchers. Methods for fitting intensity measurements in terms of the constitutive tensor that manifests as the differential refraction and absorption of circularly polarized light, are described, and examples are illustrated. Single oriented molecules, as opposed to single oriented crystals, can be treated computationally. Structure-property correlations for such achiral molecules with comparatively simple electronic structures are considered as a heuristic foundation for the response of crystals that may be subject to measurement.

Eshelby untwisting

The concept of Eshelby untwisting, the effect of an axial screw dislocation driving an intrinsically twisted nanocrystal towards a straighter configuration more consistent with long-range translational symmetry, is introduced here. Force-field simulations of nanorods built from the enantiomorphous (space groups, P3₁21 and P3₂21) crystal structures of benzil (C₆H₅-C(O)-C(O)-C₆H₅) were previously shown to twist in opposite directions, even in the absence of dislocations. Here, both right- and left-handed screw dislocations were introduced into benzil nanorods in silico. For rods built from the P3₂21 enantiomorph, dislocations with negative Burgers vectors increased the right-handed twisting already present in the intrinsically twisted structures without dislocations, whereas dislocations with positive Burgers vectors drove the twisted structure back towards a straight configuration, untwisting. In the dynamic simulations, the P3₂21 helicoid endowed with a positive Burgers vector ultimately twisted back through the straight configuration, until a helicoid of opposite sense from that of the starting structure, was obtained. The bearing of these observations on the propensity of small crystals to adopt non-polyhedral morphologies is discussed.

Ambient l-lactic acid crystal polymorphism

The second and third crystalline forms of lactic acid are described, yet along with the known structure, they together fail to reproduce any of the supramolecular aggregates that have long been observed in isotropic media.

Crystals of Benzamide, the First Polymorphous Molecular Compound, Are Helicoidal

The growth of spontaneously twisted crystals is a common but poorly understood phenomenon. An analysis of the formation of twisted crystals of a metastable benzamide polymorph (form II) crystallizing from highly supersaturated aqueous and ethanol solutions is given here. Benzamide, the first polymorphic molecular crystal reported (1832), would have been the first helicoidal crystal observed had the original authors undertaken an analysis by light microscopy. Polymorphism and twisting frequently concur as they are both associated with high thermodynamic driving forces for crystallization. Optical and electron microscopies as well as electron and powder X-ray diffraction reveal a complex lamellar structure of benzamide form II needle-like crystals. The internal stress produced by the overgrowth of lamellae is shown to be able to create a twist moment that is responsible for the observed non-classical morphologies.

Polarized light through polycrystalline vaterite helicoids

Vaterite helicoids [W. Jiang et al., Nat. Commun., 2017, 8, 15066] are chiral, polycrystalline suprastructures grown in the presence of the amino acids, aspartic (Asp) or glutamic (Glu) acid, that are abundant in proteins regulating biomineralization. These complex objects are composed of hexagonal vaterite nanocrystals assembled as curved-edge platelets that form chiral ensembles. The sense stacked platelets is correlated with the stereochemistry of the amino acid additive: l-Asp gives counterclockwise architectures while d-Asp gives the clockwise enantiomorphs. As new layers stack, platelets become progressively inclined with respect to the substrate suface. The growth and structure of vaterite helicoids was originally evidenced by electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Here, we develop an optical model for describing polarized light transmission through helicoids as measured by Mueller matrix polarimetry. The close agreement between experimental measurements and simulation confirms that the propellor-like organization of inclined platelets creates optically active structures determined by growth additive stereochemistry. The microscopy employed demonstrates the information that can be obtained by complete polarimetry using a camera as a light detector, a technique that could be applied profitably to all manner of complex structures organized from anisotropic particles.

Better than CD: Eugénie Cotton (1881-1967)

Aimé Cotton is known for his invention of circular dichroism spectroscopy. In 1913, he married Eugénie Feytis, a scientist who studied physics with Marie Curie. Following the Second World War, Eugénie Cotton was determined to advance the rights and standing of women, sure in the belief that doing so was necessary not only because it was just but also because a world with women in the forefront would be more secure and less susceptible to the catastrophe worldwide military conflict. She was a cofounder of the Women's International Democratic Federation and served as its first president. In 1951, she was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize, and in 1961, the gold medal from the World Peace Council. The extraordinary life of Eugénie Cotton is reconstructed in a new biography by Loukia Efthymiou, Eugénie Cotton (1881-1967) (Éditions Universitaires Européennes, 2019) that is reviewed here. Among the contributions of Eugénie Cotton of particular interest to the Chirality readership is the biography she wrote of her husband, Aimé Cotton, l'optique et magneto-optique (Éditions Seghers, 1967), the most complete source of information on the founder of the science of circular dichroism. This biography is also discussed here, thereby building two reviews of books, one new and one old, one about Eugénie Cotton and one by her, into a single essay.

Tuning the optical isotropic point of mixed crystals of ethylenediammonium sulfate/selenate

In anisotropic crystals, optical isotropic points are wavelengths where linear birefringence disappears because the refractive indices for both eigenmodes are accidentally equivalent. Here, the optical isotropic point of ethylene-diammonium selenate (EDSe) is tuned by generating a solid-solution series of EDSe doped with sulfate. Mueller matrix polarimetry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction are used to correlate changes in linear birefringence with the crystal composition of EDS x Se1-x . A scheme for using mixed crystals with isotropic points as tunable birefringent optical bandpass filters is proposed and their performance is modeled.

Manipulating Solid Forms of Contact Insecticides for Infectious Disease Prevention

Malaria control is under threat by the development of vector resistance to pyrethroids in long-lasting insecticidal nets, which has prompted calls for a return to the notorious crystalline contact insecticide DDT. A faster acting difluoro congener, DFDT, was developed in Germany during World War II, but in 1945 Allied inspectors dismissed its superior performance and reduced toxicity to mammals. It vanished from public health considerations. Herein, we report the discovery of amorphous and crystalline forms of DFDT and a mono-fluorinated chiral congener, MFDT. These solid forms were evaluated against Drosophila as well as Anopheles and Aedes mosquitoes, the former identified as disease vectors for malaria and the latter for Zika, yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya. Contact insecticides are transmitted to the insect when its feet contact the solid surface of the insecticide, resulting in absorption of the active agent. Crystalline DFDT and MFDT were much faster killers than DDT, and their amorphous forms were even faster. The speed of action (a.k.a. knockdown time), which is critical to mitigating vector resistance, depends inversely on the thermodynamic stability of the solid form. Furthermore, one enantiomer of the chiral MFDT exhibits faster knockdown speeds than the other, demonstrating chiral discrimination during the uptake of the insecticide or when binding at the sodium channel, the presumed destination of the neurotoxin. These observations demonstrate an unambiguous link between thermodynamic stability and knockdown time for important disease vectors, suggesting that manipulation of the solid-state chemistry of contact insecticides, demonstrated here for DFDT and MFDT, is a viable strategy for mitigating insect-borne diseases, with an accompanying benefit of reducing environmental impact.

Twist renormalization in molecular crystals driven by geometric frustration

Symmetry considerations preclude the possibility of twist or continuous helical symmetry in bulk crystalline structures. However, as has been shown nearly a century ago, twisted molecular crystals are ubiquitous and can be formed by about 1/4 of organic substances. Despite its ubiquity, this phenomenon has so far not been satisfactorily explained. In this work we study twisted molecular crystals as geometrically frustrated assemblies. We model the molecular constituents as uniaxially twisted cubes and examine their crystalline assembly. We exploit a renormalization group (RG) approach to follow the growth of the rod-like twisted crystals these constituents produce, inquiring in every step into the evolution of their morphology, response functions and residual energy. The gradual untwisting of the rod-like frustrated crystals predicted by the RG approach is verified experimentally using silicone rubber models of similar geometry. Our theory provides a mechanism for the conveyance of twist across length-scales observed experimentally and reconciles the apparent paradox of a twisted single crystal as a finite size effect.

Dislocations in molecular crystals

Dislocations in molecular crystals remain terra incognita. Owing to the complexity of molecular structure, dislocations in molecular crystals can be difficult to understand using only the foundational concepts devised over decades for hard materials. Herein, we review the generation, structure, and physicochemical consequences of dislocations in molecular crystals. Unlike metals, ceramics, and semiconductors, molecular crystals are often characterized by flexible building units of low symmetry, thereby limiting analysis, complicating modeling, and prompting new approaches to elucidate their role in crystallography from growth to mechanics. Such considerations affect applications ranging from plastic electronics and mechanical actuators to the tableting of pharmaceuticals.

Revisiting polarimetry near the isotropic point of an optically active, non-enantiomorphous, molecular crystal

Accurate polarimetric measurements of the optical activity of crystals along low symmetry directions are facilitated by isotropic points, frequencies where dispersion curves of eigenrays cross and the linear birefringence disappears. We report here the optical properties and structure of achiral, uniaxial (point group D_2d ) potassium trihydrogen di-(cis-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylate) dihydrate, whose isotropic point was previously detected (S. A. Kim, C. Grieswatch, H. Küppers, Zeit. Krist. 1993; 208:219-222) and exploited for a singular measurement of optical activity normal to the optic axis. The crystal structure associated with the aforementioned study was never published. We report it here, confirming the space group assignment I 4¯c2, along with the frequency dependence of the fundamental optical properties and the constitutive tensors by fitting optical dispersion relations to measured Mueller matrix spectra. k-Space maps of circular birefringence and of the Mueller matrix near the isotropic wavelength are measured and simulated. The signs of optical rotation are correlated with the absolute crystallographic directions.

Chiroptical structure-property relations in cyclo[18]carbon and its in silico hydrogenation products

The anisotropy of the optical activity of cyclo[18]carbon (C₁₈ ), fully hydrogenated C₁₈ (C₁₈ H₃₆ ), and 26 hydrogenated compounds of intermediate composition, C₁₈ H_2n , n = 1,2…17, were computed. These compounds were selected because they resemble loops of wire. The maximum gyration for acetylenic and cumulenic subgroups of compounds was linearly proportional to the product of the geometric area over which the charge can circulate, multiplied by the largest separation between carbon atoms on opposing sides of the loops. These geometric quantities can be likened to transition magnetic dipole moments and transition electric dipole moments, respectively, that can be generated in electronic excitations and which contribute in the main to nonresonant optical activity. The correlation between a computed geometric product of distance and area, and a quantum chemical property, establishes that chiroptical structure-activity relationships can be well established for judiciously chosen series of comparatively large compounds.

ROY revisited, again: the eighth solved structure

Dynamics and unsteady morphologies at ice interfaces driven by D2O-H2O exchange

The growth dynamics of D2O ice in liquid H2O in a microfluidic device were investigated between the melting points of D2O ice (3.8 °C) and H2O ice (0 °C). As the temperature was decreased at rates between 0.002 °C/s and 0.1 °C/s, the ice front advanced but retreated immediately upon cessation of cooling, regardless of the temperature. This is a consequence of the competition between diffusion of H2O into the D2O ice, which favors melting of the interface, and the driving force for growth supplied by cooling. Raman microscopy tracked H/D exchange across the solid H2O-solid D2O interface, with diffusion coefficients consistent with transport of intact H2O molecules at the D2O ice interface. At fixed temperatures below 3 °C, the D2O ice front melted continuously, but at temperatures near 0 °C a scalloped interface morphology appeared with convex and concave sections that cycled between growth and retreat. This behavior, not observed for D2O ice in contact with D2O liquid or H2O ice in contact with H2O liquid, reflects a complex set of cooperative phenomena, including H/D exchange across the solid-liquid interface, latent heat exchange, local thermal gradients, and the Gibbs-Thomson effect on the melting points of the convex and concave features.

Double cone of eigendirections in optically active ethylenediammonium selenate crystals

Circular birefringence (CB) is generally responsible for only a small perturbation to the state of light polarization in crystals that also exhibit linear birefringence (LB). As such, the magnetoelectric tensor of gyration, which gives rise to CB and optical activity, is less well determined than the electric permittivity tensor in optical models of the Mueller matrix. To visualize the effect of the magnetoelectric tensor on polarimetric measurements, reported here are experimental mappings of the Mueller matrix and of the CB in a new chiral crystal with accidental null LB at an accessible optical frequency. Single crystals of ethylenediammonium selenate (EDSeO₄) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction and Mueller matrix measurements in transmission and reflection. The crystals are isomorphous with the corresponding sulfate salt. They are tetragonal, space group P4₁₍₃₎2₁2. The constitutive relations of EDSeO₄ were recovered using a partial wave summation of incoherent reflections. The extraordinary and ordinary refractive indices cross at 364 nm (3.41 eV), a scenario commonly called the 'isotropic point' or 'iso-index point'. At this wavelength, the magnetoelectric tensor fully describes the polarization transformation, giving rise to a double cone of eigendirections.

Powder diffraction and crystal structure prediction identify four new coumarin polymorphs

Coumarin, a simple, commodity chemical isolated from beans in 1820, has, to date, only yielded one solid state structure. Here, we report a rich polymorphism of coumarin grown from the melt. Four new metastable forms were identified and their crystal structures were solved using a combination of computational crystal structure prediction algorithms and X-ray powder diffraction. With five crystal structures, coumarin has become one of the few rigid molecules showing extensive polymorphism at ambient conditions. We demonstrate the crucial role of advanced electronic structure calculations including many-body dispersion effects for accurate ranking of the stability of coumarin polymorphs and the need to account for anharmonic vibrational contributions to their free energy. As such, coumarin is a model system for studying weak intermolecular interactions, crystallization mechanisms, and kinetic effects.

Abuse of Rachel Carson and Misuse of DDT Science in the Service of Environmental Deregulation

Fake news?? The contact insecticide DDT has been reappraised as a safe, life-saving compound by special interest groups committed to repealing environmental regulations. It is shown in this essay how some specific toxicological data has been misused by those aiming to disingenuously influence public policy.
