Abstract
The Indonesian Young Toba Tuff (YTT), classically dated around 74 ka BP, is considered as a short-lived explosive cataclysmic super-eruption. The huge amounts of ash and SO2 emitted are likely to have triggered a volcanic winter which accelerated the transition to the last glaciation, and may have induced a human genetic bottleneck. However, the global climatic impact of the YTT or its duration are hotly debated. The present work offers a new interpretation of the Toba volcanic complex eruptive history. Analysing the BAR94-25 marine core proximal to the Toba volcanic center and combining it with high-resolution tephrostratigraphy and δ18O stratigraphy, we show that the Toba complex produced a volcanic succession that consists of at least 17 distinct layers of tephra and cryptotephra. Textural and geochemical analyses show that the tephra layers can be divided in 3 main successive volcanic activity phases (VAP1 to VAP3) over a period of ~ 50 kyr. The main volcanic activity phase, VAP2, including the YTT, is likely composed of 6 eruptive events in an interval whose total duration is ~ 10 ka. Thus, we suggest that the eruptive model of the Toba volcano must be revised as the duration of the Toba volcanic activity was much longer than suggested by previous studies. The implications of re-estimating the emission rate and the dispersion of ashes and SO2 include global environmental reconstitutions, climate change modelling and possibly human migration and evolution.

Abstract
The degree of interaction between the ventral and dorsal visual streams has been discussed in multiple scientific domains for decades. Recently, several white matter tracts that directly connect cortical regions associated with the dorsal and ventral streams have become possible to study due to advancements in automated and reproducible methods. The developmental trajectory of this set of tracts, here referred to as the posterior vertical pathway (PVP), has yet to be described. We propose an input-driven model of white matter development and provide evidence for the model by focusing on the development of the PVP. We used reproducible, cloud-computing methods and diffusion imaging from adults and children (ages 5-8 years) to compare PVP development to that of tracts within the ventral and dorsal pathways. PVP microstructure was more adult-like than dorsal stream microstructure, but less adult-like than ventral stream microstructure. Additionally, PVP microstructure was more similar to the microstructure of the ventral than the dorsal stream and was predicted by performance on a perceptual task in children. Overall, results suggest a potential role for the PVP in the development of the dorsal visual stream that may be related to its ability to facilitate interactions between ventral and dorsal streams during learning. Our results are consistent with the proposed model, suggesting that the microstructural development of major white matter pathways is related, at least in part, to the propagation of sensory information within the visual system.

Abstract
Background Blood plasma proteins play an important role in immune defense against pathogens, including cytokine signaling, the complement system, and the acute-phase response. Recent large-scale studies have reported genetic (i.e., protein quantitative trait loci, pQTLs) and non-genetic factors, such as age and sex, as major determinants to inter-individual variability in immune response variation. However, the contribution of blood-cell composition to plasma protein heterogeneity has not been fully characterized and may act as a mediating factor in association studies. Methods Here, we evaluated plasma protein levels from 400 unrelated healthy individuals of western European ancestry, who were stratified by sex and two decades of life (20–29 and 60–69 years), from the Milieu Intérieur cohort. We quantified 229 proteins by Luminex in a clinically certified laboratory and their levels of variation were analyzed together with 5.2 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms. With respect to non-genetic variables, we included 254 lifestyle and biochemical factors, as well as counts of seven circulating immune cell populations measured by hemogram and standardized flow cytometry. Results Collectively, we found 152 significant associations involving 49 proteins and 20 non-genetic variables. Consistent with previous studies, age and sex showed a global, pervasive impact on plasma protein heterogeneity, while body mass index and other health status variables were among the non-genetic factors with the highest number of associations. After controlling for these covariates, we identified 100 and 12 pQTLs acting in cis and trans, respectively, collectively associated with 87 plasma proteins and including 19 novel genetic associations. Genetic factors explained the largest fraction of the variability of plasma protein levels, as compared to non-genetic factors. In addition, blood-cell fractions, including leukocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and platelets, had a larger contribution to inter-individual variability than age and sex and appeared as confounders of specific genetic associations. Finally, we identified new genetic associations with plasma protein levels of five monogenic Mendelian disease genes including two primary immunodeficiency genes (Ficolin-3 and FAS). Conclusions Our study identified novel genetic and non-genetic factors associated to plasma protein levels which may inform health status and disease management. Abstract
The patient-experience is an emerging concept in research and medico-social action, and its consideration in the development of care pathways is encouraged (e.g. ’Ma Santé 2020’ national plan in France). In addition, the patient-experience of the elderly subject has specific dimensions and his collection presents difficulties insufficiently explored. PAERPA (elderly people at risk of loss of autonomy), French national experiment for the care of frail elderly patients, offers an opportunity to return to these issues.
The objective of this study, mandated by the ARS of Hauts-de-France, was to collect the experience of the elderly PAERPA. Faced with the difficulties of current methodologies, several methodological approaches have been combined: semi-structured individual interviews face-to-face or by telephone, dedicated questionnaire. In addition, a specific grid was developed to explore the home-based patient experience, including seven dimensions of the patient-experience identified in the literature. This study was conducted in the second half of 2018 (3 years and a half of the start of the project).
The experience of 43 seniors and / or caregivers was collected. Patients PAERPA are generally satisfied with their care but they have difficulties in making the link between their care and the actors and devices specific to PAEPRA experimentation. Human connection and listening seem essential for the elderly patients included. Other dimensions, such as stakeholder coordination, remain controversial and more difficult to grasp. Methodologically, the particular situation of seniors, such as sensory or memory disorders, requires a major adaptation of the survey tools.
In PAERPA, the patient-experience of the frail elderly subject passes mainly through the feeling of a human connection. Current methodologies do not seem fully adapted to collectively capture the experience of frail elderly patients.
Key messages
Evaluating the patient-experience to improve the health pathway is possible and necessary through a qualitative collection, regularly, in itinere. The peculiarities of older people often require the participation of carers, who need to be involved in the assessment of the patient-experience and raised awareness.

Abstract
A measurement is presented of the [Formula: see text] production cross section at [Formula: see text] = 7 TeV using [Formula: see text] collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 383 [Formula: see text], collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Selection of [Formula: see text](1020) mesons is based on the identification of charged kaons by their energy loss in the pixel detector. The differential cross section is measured as a function of the transverse momentum, [Formula: see text], and rapidity, [Formula: see text], of the [Formula: see text](1020) meson in the fiducial region 500 [Formula: see text] 1200 MeV, [Formula: see text] 0.8, kaon [Formula: see text] 230 MeV and kaon momentum [Formula: see text] 800 MeV. Abstract
The luminosity calibration for the ATLAS detector at the LHC during pp collisions at [Formula: see text] in 2010 and 2011 is presented. Evaluation of the luminosity scale is performed using several luminosity-sensitive detectors, and comparisons are made of the long-term stability and accuracy of this calibration applied to the pp collisions at [Formula: see text]. A luminosity uncertainty of [Formula: see text] is obtained for the 47 pb-1 of data delivered to ATLAS in 2010, and an uncertainty of [Formula: see text] is obtained for the 5.5 fb-1 delivered in 2011.

Abstract
The inclusive jet cross-section has been measured in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] in a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of [Formula: see text] collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. Jets are identified using the anti-kt algorithm with two radius parameters of 0.4 and 0.6. The inclusive jet double-differential cross-section is presented as a function of the jet transverse momentum pT and jet rapidity y, covering a range of 20≤pT<430 GeV and |y|<4.4. The ratio of the cross-section to the inclusive jet cross-section measurement at [Formula: see text], published by the ATLAS Collaboration, is calculated as a function of both transverse momentum and the dimensionless quantity [Formula: see text], in bins of jet rapidity. The systematic uncertainties on the ratios are significantly reduced due to the cancellation of correlated uncertainties in the two measurements. Results are compared to the prediction from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations corrected for non-perturbative effects, and next-to-leading order Monte Carlo simulation. Furthermore, the ATLAS jet cross-section measurements at [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are analysed within a framework of next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations to determine parton distribution functions of the proton, taking into account the correlations between the measurements.

Abstract
A measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in the final state with a hadronically decaying tau lepton and jets is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.67 fb-1. The cross section is measured to be [Formula: see text] and is in agreement with other measurements and with the Standard Model prediction.

Abstract
The measurement of the jet energy resolution is presented using data recorded with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text]. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1. Jets are reconstructed from energy deposits measured by the calorimeters and calibrated using different jet calibration schemes. The jet energy resolution is measured with two different in situ methods which are found to be in agreement within uncertainties. The total uncertainties on these measurements range from 20 % to 10 % for jets within |y|<2.8 and with transverse momenta increasing from 30 GeV to 500 GeV. Overall, the Monte Carlo simulation of the jet energy resolution agrees with the data within 10 %.

Abstract
The ATLAS experiment has observed 1995 Z boson candidates in data corresponding to 0.15 nb(-1) of integrated luminosity obtained in the 2011 LHC Pb+Pb run at sqrt[s(NN)]=2.76 TeV. The Z bosons are reconstructed via dielectron and dimuon decay channels, with a background contamination of less than 3%. Results from the two channels are consistent and are combined. Within the statistical and systematic uncertainties, the per-event Z boson yield is proportional to the number of binary collisions estimated by the Glauber model. The elliptic anisotropy of the azimuthal distribution of the Z boson with respect to the event plane is found to be consistent with zero.

Abstract
Results of a search for new phenomena in events with an energetic photon and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV are reported. Data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1) are used. Good agreement is observed between the data and the standard model predictions. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with large extra spatial dimensions and on pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates.

Abstract
This Letter presents a search for magnetic monopoles with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider using an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb(-1) of pp collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=7 TeV. No event is found in the signal region, leading to an upper limit on the production cross section at 95% confidence level of 1.6/ϵ fb for Dirac magnetic monopoles with the minimum unit magnetic charge and with mass between 200 GeV and 1500 GeV, where ϵ is the monopole reconstruction efficiency. The efficiency ϵ is high and uniform in the fiducial region given by pseudorapidity |η|<1.37 and transverse kinetic energy 600-700<E(kin)sinθ<1400 GeV. The minimum value of 700 GeV is for monopoles of mass 200 GeV, whereas the minimum value of 600 GeV is applicable for higher mass monopoles. Therefore, the upper limit on the production cross section at 95% confidence level is 2 fb in this fiducial region. Assuming the kinematic distributions from Drell-Yan pair production of spin-1/2 Dirac magnetic monopoles, the efficiency is in the range 1%-10%, leading to an upper limit on the cross section at 95% confidence level that varies from 145 fb to 16 fb for monopoles with mass between 200 GeV and 1200 GeV. This limit is weaker than the fiducial limit because most of these monopoles lie outside the fiducial region.

Abstract
A search is presented for direct top squark pair production in final states with one isolated electron or muon, jets, and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV. The measurement is based on 4.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Each top squark is assumed to decay to a top quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations. Top squark masses between 230 GeV and 440 GeV are excluded with 95% confidence for massless LSPs, and top squark masses around 400 GeV are excluded for LSP masses up to 125 GeV.

Abstract
A search for direct pair production of supersymmetric top squarks (t(1)) is presented, assuming the t(1) decays into a top quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle, χ(1)(0), and that both top quarks decay to purely hadronic final states. A total of 16 (4) events are observed compared to a predicted standard model background of 13.5(-3.6)(+3.7)(4.4(-1.3)(+1.7)) events in two signal regions based on ∫Ldt = 4.7 fb(-1) of pp collision data taken at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. An exclusion region in the t(1) versus χ(1)(0) mass plane is evaluated: 370<m(t)(1)}<465 GeV is excluded for m(χ)(1)(0) ~ 0 GeV while m(t)(1) = 445 GeV is excluded for m(χ)(1)(0) ≤ 50 GeV.

Abstract
A search for top quark pair resonances in final states containing at least one electron or muon has been performed with the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The search uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb-1, which was recorded in 2011 at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. No evidence for a resonance is found and limits are set on the production cross-section times branching ratio to [Formula: see text] for narrow and wide resonances. For narrow Z' bosons, the observed 95 % Bayesian credibility level limits range from 9.3 pb to 0.95 pb for masses in the range of mZ'=500 GeV to mZ'=1300 GeV. The corresponding excluded mass region for a leptophobic topcolour Z' boson (Kaluza-Klein gluon excitation in the Randall-Sundrum model) is mZ'<880 GeV ([Formula: see text]).

The analysis uses 2.06 fb(-1) of √[s]=7 TeV proton-proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with standard model expectations in two signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric and simplified models. For the simplified models, degenerate lightest chargino and next-to-lightest neutralino masses up to 300 GeV are excluded for mass differences from the lightest neutralino up to 300 GeV.

Abstract
This paper presents a search for the t-channel exchange of an R-parity violating scalar top quark ([Formula: see text]) in the e±μ∓ continuum using 2.1 fb-1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector in [Formula: see text]pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Data are found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model backgrounds. Limits on R-parity-violating couplings at 95 % C.L. are calculated as a function of the scalar top mass ([Formula: see text]). The upper limits on the production cross section for pp→eμX, through the t-channel exchange of a scalar top quark, ranges from 170 fb for [Formula: see text] to 30 fb for [Formula: see text].

Abstract
A measurement of the ZZ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.02 fb(-1) recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is presented. Twelve events containing two Z boson candidates decaying to electrons and/or muons are observed, with an expected background of 0.3 ± 0.3(stat)(-0.3)(+0.4)(syst) events. The cross section measured in a phase-space region with good detector acceptance and for dilepton masses within the range 66 to 116 GeV is σ(ZZ → ℓ+ ℓ- ℓ+ ℓ-)(fid) = 19.4(-5.2)(+6.3)(stat)(-0.7)(+0.9)(syst) ± 0.7(lumi) fb. The resulting total cross section for on-shell ZZ production, σ(ZZ)(tot) = 8.5(-2.3)(+2.7)(stat)(-0.3)(+0.4)(syst) ± 0.3(lumi) pb, is consistent with the standard model expectation of 6.5(-0.2)(+0.3) pb calculated at the next-to-leading order in QCD. Limits on anomalous neutral triple gauge boson couplings are derived.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Large-scale genotyping of blood donors for red blood cell and platelet antigens has been predicted to replace phenotyping assays in the screening of compatible blood components for alloimmunized patients. Although several genotyping platforms have been described, novel procedures and processes are needed to perform genotyping efficiently and to maximize its benefits for blood banks. MATERIALS AND METHODS Here we describe the processes and procedures developed to introduce large-scale genotyping in our routine operations. RESULTS Preliminary cost-benefit analysis indicated that genotyping must target frequent blood donors (> 3 donations/year) to be efficiently used. A custom-designed computer application was developed to manage the whole project. It selects frequent donors among recent donations, prints coded labels to identify blood samples sent to the external genotyping laboratory, and stores genotyping results. It can search for donors compatible for any combination of the 22 genotyped antigens as well as consult the current inventory for the presence of the corresponding blood components. The phenotype of recovered components is confirmed by standard serology techniques prior to shipment to hospitals. CONCLUSION Since October 2007, 10 555 blood donors have been genotyped. The database is used on a regular basis to find compatible blood components with a genotype-phenotype concordance of 99.6%.

Abstract
We have searched for exclusive gammagamma production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV, using 532 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity taken by the run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. The event signature requires two electromagnetic showers, each with transverse energy E(T)>5 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta|<1.0, with no other particles detected in the event. Three candidate events are observed. We discuss the consistency of the three events with gammagamma, pi(0)pi(0), or eta eta production. The probability that other processes fluctuate to >or=3 events is 1.7x10(-4). An upper limit on the cross section of pp-->p + gammagamma + p production is set at 410 fb with 95% confidence level.

Abstract
We present the first observation of exclusive e(+)e(-) production in hadron-hadron collisions, using pp[over] collision data at (square root) s = 1.96 TeV taken by the run II Collider Detector at Fermilab, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 532 pb(-1). We require the absence of any particle signatures in the detector except for an electron and a positron candidate, each with transverse energy E(T) > 5 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta| < 2. With these criteria, 16 events are observed compared to a background expectation of 1.9+/-0.3 events. These events are consistent in cross section and properties with the QED process pp[over] --> p + e(+)e(-) + p[over] through two-photon exchange. The measured cross section is 1.6(-0.3)(+0.5)(stat) +/- 0.3(syst) pb. This agrees with the theoretical prediction of 1.71+/-0.01 pb.

Abstract
Lipomas usually extend in subcutaneous tissues and rarely may be compressive. We report a case of neck lipoma resulting in jugular vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in a patient treated by clozapine. Clozpine may be considered an associated risk factor for thrombosis. This case suggests that performing a regional evaluation may be particularly important when thrombophlebitis occurs.

Abstract
In isolated human platelets, exposure of subfraction 3 high-density lipoprotein (HDL3) binding sites to high concentrations of HDL3 (1 mg/mL) causes rapid desensitization of HDL3 (50 micrograms/mL)-stimulated breakdown of phosphatidylcholine, as shown in approximately a 70% depression of the maximal 1,2-diacylglycerol release activity by phospholipase C. This desensitization is HDL3 dose dependent (IC50, 150 +/- 20 micrograms/mL, n = 6) and time dependent (t1/2, < 30 seconds). It requires the binding of HDL3, as pretreatment of HDL3 by tetranitromethane does not cause the desensitization of HDL3-induced phospholipase C activity. Permeabilization of human platelets with 10 micrograms/mL digitonin, used to permit access of charged inhibitors to the cytosol, does not interfere with the pattern of HDL3 (1 mg/mL)-induced desensitization of HDL3 (50 micrograms/mL)-stimulated phospholipase C. Inhibitors of protein kinase C (100 mumol/L H-7 and 10 mumol/L staurosporine) markedly inhibit desensitization of HDL3-induced phospholipase C activity, whereas cAMP-dependent protein kinase inhibitor (1 mumol/L), heparin (100 nmol/L), or concanavalin A (0.25 mg/mL) were ineffective. HDL3-induced desensitization is accompanied at least by the phosphorylation of the 94- and 110-kD proteins. Inhibition of HDL3-induced desensitization by 100 mumol/L H-7 or 10 mumol/L staurosporine is characterized by a marked reduction of the phosphorylation state of these proteins in permeabilized platelets. Whereas protein kinase C inhibitors fully inhibited the phosphorylation of the 94- and 110-kD proteins, inhibitors of protein kinase A were less effective. These data establish that phosphorylation by protein kinase C represent a step in the desensitization of HDL3 binding sites in human platelets.

Abstract
In this study, we have documented immunochemical properties of apolipoprotein (apo) B-containing particles (LpB) extracted from human atherosclerotic lesions obtained during vascular reconstructive surgery of patients. These properties were compared to those of particles purified from corresponding atherosclerotic plasma and healthy control plasma. LpB immunoreactivities were tested in solid phase competitive binding radioimmunoassays using five anti-apoB monoclonal antibodies (MAb) for which epitopes have been previously located on the protein. The regions encompassed amino acids 405 to 539 (MAb B1), 1854 to 1879 (MAb B4), 3506 (MAb BA11), and 4355 (MAb BL3). The fifth antibody (MAb BL5) recognizes a conformationally expressed epitope. LpB from lesions presented a significantly decreased immunoreactivity as compared to LpB from respective plasma except for the epitope recognized by MAb BA11 located precisely in the low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor binding site. The accessibility of the four sequential epitopes was similar on LpB from atherosclerotic and healthy plasma while it was decreased for the conformational one in LpB from atherosclerotic samples. These altered immunoreactivities were not related to changes in chemical composition of LpB as this was quite comparable in all preparations. With regard to electronegativity, apoB fragmentation, immunological accessibility, and size distribution of the particles, changes seem to increase in the following order from healthy plasma, atherosclerotic plasma, and the corresponding lesions. The results confirm some structural characteristics of oxidatively modified particles from human atherosclerotic lesions and to a lesser degree from respective plasma, but more specifically demonstrate a global conformational change in LpB from lesions, this change being perhaps initiated in the plasma.

Abstract
Components of the renin angiotensin system have been identified in many nonmammalian vertebrates. However, in many of these animals, including reptiles, the physiological functions and importance of the system remain unclear. To aid in the study of the system in a reptile we modified a commercially available radioimmunoassay (RIA) kit containing antibody against human angiotensin I (ANG I) for use in the freshwater turtle, Pseudemys scripta. Cross-reactivity between anti-human ANG I antibodies (Rainen Angiotensin I RIA Kit, New England Nuclear) and turtle ANG I was demonstrated. Cross-reactivity with the antibody in two other human ANG I assay kits (Travenol-Genentech and Biotecx) was very limited. Blood for assay was collected from conscious turtles in EDTA, centrifuged, and the plasma frozen at -20 degrees. Turtle ANG I was generated by incubation at 0.5 ml plasma at pH 5.5 for 2 hr at 30 degrees with addition of dimercaprol and 8-hydroxyquinoline. Angiotensin generation increased with temperature and with generation time. The recovery of turtle ANG I added to turtle plasma prior to incubation was 92-97%. The assay procedure was used to measure plasma renin activity (ng/ml/hr incubation) from unstimulated turtles.

Abstract
To describe the quality of life for surviving very low birthweight (VLBW, less than 1.5 kg) children and their families, the authors interviewed the parents of 22 neurologically abnormal VLBW children, 3 to 7 years after their birth and compared them to the parents of 15 neurologically normal VLBW children. The infants were born between 1976 and 1979, (mean birthweight, 1.2 kg; mean gestational age, 30 weeks). They included three with spastic quadriplegia, 14 with spastic diplegia, and five with hydrocephalus. Eight children were not walking. Seven families rated their child's neurologic problem as severe, while 15 rated the problem as mild. Neurologically abnormal children tended to display more screaming and crying than the normal children. Cost of ongoing medical care was a problem for families of nine neurologically abnormal as compared with two families of normal children. The abnormal children required a total of 61 postneonatal rehospitalizations versus 11 in the normal group. Families of neurologically abnormal children reported on significant major changes in their personal lives for the care of their child. Both groups of parents reported heightened appreciation of their child. Plans for future children were affected in both. Parents identified an urgent need for better medical information, education of pediatricians regarding preterm development and neurologic sequelae, and better contact and support among parents themselves.

Abstract
Neonatal intensive care has improved very low birth weight (less than 1.5 kg) outcome. To evaluate the spectrum of morbidity related to this care, 505 survivors born between 1975 and 1979 were followed during the first three years of life. Transient neurological abnormalities of muscle tone which resolved by two years of age were seen in 40% of children. The incidence of chronic physical disease (lung disease, sequelae of necrotizing enterocolitis, and cholestatic jaundice) was 23% at term, 12% by 8 months, and 3.3% by 20 months. Subnormal weight for age at three years was found in 17% of infants born appropriate for gestational age and 46% of those born small for gestational age. Thirty-three percent of children were rehospitalized during infancy, 10% during their second year, and 10% during their third year of life. Mean IQ was 92.0. In the total population 80.6% were considered normal, 1.7% had major congenital malformations, 10.1% had neurosensory abnormalities, and 7.6% had developmental delay (DQ or IQ less than 80). Close followup care is essential to ensure the eventual adaptation and functional normalization which occurs in the majority of these high-risk infants.
