Factors associated with viral load suppression in HIV-infected pregnant women in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Viral load (VL) near delivery is a determinant of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV. To evaluate factors associated with an undetectable VL near delivery in HIV-infected pregnant women receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and non-HAART regimens, HIV-infected pregnant women with a detectable VL at entry and having used antiretrovirals for ≥4 weeks before delivery were selected. Multivariate analysis was employed using binary logistic unconditional models; the dependent variable was having a VL <400 copies/mL near delivery. VL suppression was achieved in 403/707 women (57%): 65.4% in the HAART group, but only 26% in the non-HAART group P = 0.001. Duration of HAART was correlated with VL suppression, with maximum benefit seen after ≥12 weeks of therapy (odds ratio [OR]: 2.51; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.72-3.65). CD4+ cell count near delivery (OR: 1.53; 95% CI: 1.06-2.20) and baseline VL (OR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.58-0.94) were also independently associated with VL suppression. Overall MTCT rate was 1.6%. HAART for ≥12 weeks, baseline VL and CD4 cell count near delivery were independently associated with viral suppression near delivery.

Temperature oscillations of magnetization observed in nanofluid ferromagnetic graphite

We report on unusual magnetic properties observed for nanofluid room temperature ferromagnetic graphite (with an average particle size of [Formula: see text] nm). More precisely, the measured magnetization exhibits a low temperature anomaly (attributed to the manifestation of finite size effects below the quantum temperature [Formula: see text]) as well as pronounced temperature oscillations above T = 50 K (attributed to manifestation of the hard-sphere type of pair correlations between ferromagnetic particles in the nanofluid).

Superconducting and magnetic behaviour of niobium doped RuSr(2)Gd(1.5)Ce(0.5)Cu(2)O(10-δ)

Polycrystalline samples of Ru(1-x)Nb(x)Sr(2)Gd(1.5)Ce(0.5)Cu(2)O(10-δ), 0≤x≤0.5, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Resistivity, magnetization and AC susceptibility measurements have been done and analysed considering a phase separation scenario. A strong suppression of the cluster glass (CG) transition associated with niobium doping was identified. In fact, the CG phase was not present in samples for x≥0.2, leading to changes in the magnetic hysteresis loops measured at low temperatures. These hysteresis loops can be explained as a result of the contribution of two distinct magnetic phases: the canted AFM phase and embedded Ru(4+)-rich clusters which order as a CG in low temperatures. Interestingly, the significant changes in the magnetic response of the material do affect the superconducting transition temperature T(c). It was found that both T(c) and the superconducting fraction are reduced in samples which present the spin glass phase. Therefore, our results point to some coupling between magnetism and superconductivity in this ruthenocuprate family, the presence of the magnetic moment being deleterious for the superconductivity.

Anisotropic superconducting properties of aligned MgB(2) crystallites

Samples of aligned MgB(2) crystallites have been prepared, allowing for the first time the direct identification of an upper critical field anisotropy H(ab)(c2)/H(c)(c2) = xi(ab)/xi(c) approximately 1.7, with xi(o,ab) approximately 70 A, xi(o,c) approximately 40 A, and a mass anisotropy ratio m(ab)/m(c) approximately 0.3. A ferromagnetic background signal was identified, possibly related to the raw materials purity.

Rapid determination of furanocoumarins in creams and pomades using SPE and GC

A solid-phase extraction and chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) method has been developed for the routine analysis of psoralen, bergapten, isopimpinellin and pimpinellin in creams and pomades employed in Brazil for the treatment of vitiligo. The calibration curve for psoralen was linear in the range 10-100 microg ml(-1), for bergapten 5-90 microg ml(-1), for pimpinellin 10-90 microg ml(-1) and for isopimpinellin 5-100 microg ml(-1). The best recoveries of the furanocoumarins in the creams analysed were 94-97%, whereas in the pomades, recoveries were 94-96%. The R.S.D. of the quantitative-analysis of the furanocoumarins in the products analyses were within 5%.

[The most frequent neurologic disturbances. A contribution to the definition of topics for the programmatic content to the program of neurology in medical graduation]

INTRODUCTION

Knowledge accumulation is overfilling the thematic content of medical graduation. Medical Schools must be alert to define a minimal content related with the most frequent disturbs. We intent to suggest topics for the minimal content, to the program of Neurology in medical graduation.

METHOD

1. To identify the places where young doctors are working outside the School Hospital (SH): we analysed the answers of the letters sent to 6415 resident - doctors (RD) in São Paulo's State and we made personal interview with 201 RD. 2. To verify the most frequent neuropsychiatric disturbs (ND) in the population: we made the analysis of the patient's diagnostic records in emergency room of three institutions: Municipal of Taubaté-SP, Municipal of São José dos Campos-SP and Faculty of Medicine of São Paulo Santa Casa de Misericórdia.

RESULTS

1. The RD are young and, outside the SH, they work in other emergency services. 2. The most frequent diagnosis in institutions were listed: alcoholism, cerebrovascular disease, coma, cranial trauma, dementia, dizziness, epilepsy, facial paralysis, faint, headache, hemiplegia or paraplegia, meningitis, others paralysis, periferical neuropathy and psychiatric disorders.

CONCLUSIONS

Those diagnostics most frequent are relevant topics of the programmatic content to the program of Neurology in medical graduation.
