Abstract
Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) has global appeal, acknowledging the important role of nursing in care delivery. This article complements the Teaching Tips column, shifting from content covered to the leadership lessons that presenters must consider when preparing for and presenting to a global audience. Abstract
There has been increasing focus on improving the quality and safety of health care globally. Understanding that the health of one nation impacts others worldwide drives initiatives for collaboration to improve the health of all. In this, the Year of the Nurse and Midwife as designated by the World Health Organization, The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Competencies provide structure that transcends culture for framing the nursing role to contribute to improving patient safety and the quality of care delivery internationally. Abstract
PURPOSE The current study was set with a purpose to assess the regulatory role of micro RNA (miR)-138 in human lung cancer cells with emphasis on the underlying mechanism of action. METHODS RT-PCR based analysis was employed for gene expression studies. MTT assay was used to determine the proliferation rates of lung cancer cells. Colony forming assay was performed for the analysis of colony forming potential. DAPI and Annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide (PI) double staining methods were performed for the analysis of apoptosis. Migration and invasion of cancer cells were assessed using wound healing and transwell assays, respectively. Dual luciferase reporter assay was performed for interactional study. Western blotting was used to determine the protein concentrations. RESULTS Cancer cells had lower levels of miR-138 transcripts. The overexpression of miR-138 reduced the proliferation of cancer cells and cells were seen to form lower number of viable colonies. This was due to the induction of cancer cell apoptosis under miR-138 overexpression. miR-138 also inhibited the metastasis of lung cancer cells. miR-138 was found to interact with SOX4 intracellularly and SOX4 protein levels decreased under miR-138. The anticancer effects of miR-138 were shown to be modulated through SOX4. CONCLUSION MiRs have a potential to act as molecular markers in cancer prognosis. There is a need to screen for miRs specific to particular types of cancer and to look for their potential to function as anticancer entities at molecular level.

Abstract
Nerve agents belong to the most dangerous chemical warfare agents and can be/were misused by terrorists. Effective prophylaxis and treatment is necessary to diminish their effect. General principles of prophylaxis are summarized (protection against acetylcholinesterase inhibition, detoxification, treatment "in advance" and use of different drugs). They are based on the knowledge of mechanism of action of nerve agents. Among different examinations, it is necessary to test prophylactic effectivity in vivo and compare the results with protection in vitro. Chemical and biological approaches to the development of new prophylactics would be applied simultaneously during this research. Though the number of possible prophylactics is relatively high, the only four drugs were introduced into military medical practice. At present, pyridostigmine seems to be common prophylactic antidote; prophylactics panpal (tablets with pyridostigmine, trihexyphenidyl and benactyzine), transant (transdermal patch containing HI-6) are other means introduced into different armies as prophylactics. Scavenger commercionally available is Protexia®. Future development will be focused on scavengers, and on other drugs either reversible cholinesterase inhibitors (e.g., huperzine A, gallantamine, physostigmine, acridine derivatives) or other compounds.

Abstract
Phenicol antibiotics, such as chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol, and florfenicol, are commonly used in the veterinary and aquaculture fields to treat diseases and have frequently been detected in aquatic environments. Nevertheless, there is limited information regarding the effects of phenicol antibiotics on aquatic nontarget species. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the long-term (21-d) influence on the reproduction and growth of and the acute (24-h) oxidative response and tissue damage in the crustacean Daphnia magna after exposure to phenicol drugs, including their environmental concentrations. The results indicate that D. magna exposed to florfenicol are likely to cause more adverse effects than those exposed to chloramphenicol and thiamphenicol over long-term (21-d) exposures. Furthermore, changes in biochemical biomarkers such as malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), and reduced glutathione (GSH) induced by individual and mixtures of phenicol antibiotics were also observed. Low concentrations of chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol + florfenicol, and chloramphenicol + thiamphenicol significantly increased the MDA levels of D. magna after 24-h exposures, causing cellular oxidative damage in the animals. In addition, discrepancies between CAT activities and GSH levels were observed, underscoring the need to evaluate multiple indicators of oxidative stress in toxicological studies using D. magna as a model. Abstract
Novel tacrine-benzyl quinolone carboxylic acid (tacrine-BQCA) hybrids were designed based on multi-target directed ligands (MTLDs) paradigm, synthesized and evaluated in vitro as inhibitors of human acetylcholinesterase (hAChE) and human butyrylcholinesterase (hBChE). Tacrine moiety is represented herein as 7-methoxytacrine, 6-chlorotacrine or unsubstituted tacrine forming three different families of seven members, i.e. 21 compounds in overall. Introducing BQCA, a positive modulator of M1 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs), the action of novel compounds on M1 mAChRs was evaluated via Fluo-4 NW assay on the Chinese hamster ovarian (CHO-M1WT2) cell line. All the novel tacrine-BQCA hybrids were able to block the action of hAChE and hBChE in micromolar to nanomolar range. The hAChE kinetic profile of 5p was found to be mixed-type which is consistent with our docking experiments. Moreover, selected ligands were assessed for their potential hepatotoxicity on HepG2 cell line and presumable permeation through the blood-brain barrier by PAMPA assay. Expected agonistic profile towards M1 mAChRs delivered by BQCA moiety was not confirmed. From all the hybrids, 5o can be highlighted as non-selective cholinesterase inhibitor (hAChE IC50 = 74.5 nM; hBChE IC50 = 83.3 nM) with micromolar antagonistic activity towards M1 mAChR (IC50 = 4.23 μM). A non-selective pattern of cholinesterase inhibition is likely to be valuable during the onset as well as later stages of AD.

Abstract
Chemical warfare agents constitute an increasing threat to both military and civilian populations. Therefore, effective prophylactic approaches are urgently needed. Herein, we present a novel hybrid compound which is able not only to keep acetylcholinesterase resistant to organophosphate (OP) inhibitors, but also to serve as an enzyme reactivator in the case of OP intoxication.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the status of deciduous dental caries among preschool children in Chongqing city and to compare the oral health status of preschoolers from public and private kindergarten. METHODS According to the criteria recommended by The Third National Oral Health Investigation, the deciduous caries of 5 030 preschool children aged 3 to 6 years old from 40 private kindergartens and 16 public kindergartens in Yuzhong district of Chongqing were examined. The prevalence of dental caries and the mean dmft and filling rate were calculated. The results were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 software package. RESULTS Maxillary deciduous central incisors and mandibular deciduous molar were most prone to decay in 5,030 children. The prevalence of dental caries was 54.08% (2,720/5,030). The mean dmft score was 2.58 and the filling rate was 0.98% (127/12,993). The prevalence of dental caries and mean dmft increased gradually as the children were growing up (P < 0.05). The rate of filling teeth of the 6 year old group was higher than other groups (P < 0.05). No significant difference between males and females were noted (P > 0.05). The prevalence rate of deciduous dental caries among private kindergartens was 61.04% (1,656/2,713), with a mean dmft of 3.12 and filling rate of 0.35% (30/8,465). The prevalence rate of deciduous dental caries among public kindergartens was 45.92% (1,064/2,317), with a mean dmft of 1.95 and filling rate of 2.14% (97/4,528). Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in the prevalence rate, mean dmft, and filling rate between two kinds of kindergarten (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Deciduous dental caries of preschool children is an important problem in Chongqing city and the children from private kindergarten had very low filling rate.

Abstract
A new gene expression system was developed in Rhodobacter sphaeroides, replacing a pRK415-based system used previously. The broad host-range IPTG-inducible plasmid pIND4 was used to create the plasmid pIND4-RC1 for expression of the puhA and pufQBALMX genes, encoding the reaction centre (RC) and light-harvesting complex 1 (LH1) proteins. The strain R. sphaeroides ΔRCLH was used to make a knockout of the rshI restriction endonuclease gene, enabling electroporation of DNA into the bacterium; a subsequent knockout of ppsR was made, creating the strain R. sphaeroides RCx lacking this oxygen-sensing repressor of the photosynthesis gene cluster. Using pIND4-RC1, LH1 levels were increased by a factor of about 8 over pRS1 per cell in cultures grown semi-aerobically. In addition, the ppsR knockout allowed for photosynthetic pigment-protein complex synthesis in the presence of high concentrations of molecular oxygen; here, LH1 levels per cell increased by 20 % when grown under high aeration conditions. A new medium (called RLB) is the E. coli medium LB supplemented with MgCl2 and CaCl2, which was found to increase growth rates and final cell culture densities, with an increase of 30 % of LH1 per cell detected in R. sphaeroides RCx(pIND4-RC1) grown in RLB versus LB medium. Furthermore, cell density was about three times greater in RLB compared to semi-aerobic conditions. The combination of all the modifications resulted in an increase of LH1 and RC per mL of culture volume by approximately 35-fold, and a decrease in the length of culture incubation time from about 5 days to ~36 h.

Abstract
Organophosphorus inhibitors (OP) of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) represent a group of highly toxic compounds. The treatment of OP intoxication is, however, insufficiently ensured. Currently, two main categories of drugs-anticholinergics and oxime reactivators- are employed as antidotes. Oximes have been reported to act at several levels of the cholinergic transmission, and among the non-reactivation effects, the interaction with cholinergic receptors stands out. This review addresses issues correlated with non-reactivating effects of oxime reactivators with a special focus on the muscarinic and nicotinic receptors, but involvement of other cholinergic structures such as AChE and choline uptake carriers are discussed too. It can be concluded that the oxime reactivators show a variation in their antagonistic effect on the muscarinic and nicotinic receptors, which is likely to be of significance in the treatment of OP poisoning. In vitro data reported oximes to exert higher efficacy on the muscarinic M2 subtype than on the AChE. However, this effect seemed to be subtype specific since the antagonistic M3 effect was lower. Also, and importantly, the antimuscarinic effect was larger than that on nicotinic receptors. Even though atropine showed a much higher muscarinic antagonism, it is supposed that non-reactivation properties of oxime reactivators play a significant role in the treatment of OP poisoning.

Abstract
Current treatment of organophosphorus poisoning, resulting in overstimulation and desensitization of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors by acetylcholine (ACh), consists of the administration of atropine and oxime reactivators. However, no versatile oxime reactivator has been developed yet and some mortality still remains after application of standard atropine treatment, probably due to its lack of antinicotinic action. In our study, we focused on the interesting non-acetylcholinesterase property of oximes, i.e. antinicotinic effect of reactivators. Two standard reactivators (HI-6, obidoxime) and two new compounds (K027 and K203) were chosen for in vitro (patch clamp) and in vivo (nerve-evoked muscle contraction) testings. Both examinations showed antinicotinic effects of the reactivators. In vitro inhibition of acetylcholine-evoked currents by obidoxime, HI-6 and K203 was equivalent while K027 was less potent. Similar order of potency was observed by the in vivo examinations. We thus confirm previous in vitro results, which describe antinicotinic effects of oxime reactivators, and furthermore, we show in vivo antagonism of oxime reactivators exerted by the inhibition of ACh effect on the nicotinic receptor in the neuromuscular junction. Taking together, the effects of tested oxime reactivators indicate an antagonism on both embryonic and adult form of the muscle nicotinic receptors.

Abstract
The antidotal treatment of organophosphorus poisoning is still a problematic issue since no versatile antidote has been developed yet. In our study, we focused on an interesting property, which does not relate to the reactivation of inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE) of some oximes, but refers to their anti-muscarinic effects which may contribute considerably to their treatment efficacy. One standard reactivator (HI-6) and two new compounds (K027 and K203) have been investigated for their antimuscarinic properties. Anti-muscarinic effects were studies by means of an in vitro stimulated atrium preparation (functional test), the [(3)H]-QNB binding assay and G-protein coupled receptor assay (GPCR, beta-Arrestin Assay). Based on the functional data HI-6 demonstrates the highest anti-muscarinic effect. However, only when comparing [(3)H]-QNB binding results and GPCR data, K203 shows a very promising compound with regard to anti-muscarinic potency. The therapeutic impact of these findings has been discussed.

The Synthesis of (2E)-2-methyl-3-(4-{[4-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy)phenyl]sulfanyl}phenyl) prop-2-enoic acid (VUFB 20609) and racemic 2-methyl-3-(4-{[4-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy) phenyl]sulfanyl}phenyl)propanoic acid (VUFB 20584) as new potential antileukotrienic drugs are described. Due to a low reactivity of the 4-substituted aryl bromides (coupling of the 4-substituted aryl bromides do not provide an activating functional group with 4-methoxybenzene-1-thiol), special conditions, in particular specific heterogeneous copper catalysts, were used. Catalytic hydrogenation of the conjugated double bond on Pd/C in the presence of the sulfanyl group is discussed. In-vitro cytotoxicity testing was performed using a microplate colorimetric acid phosphatase assay. Antiplatelet activity was evaluated using an in-vitro test in human platelet-rich plasma. Some substances inhibited arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation.

Abstract
Nine potential AChE reactivators were synthesized using a modification of currently known synthetic pathways. Their potency to reactivate AChE inhibited by insecticide chlorpyrifos was tested in vitro. 2,2'-Bis(hydroxyiminomethyl)-1,1'-(1,4-phenylenedimethyl)-bispyridinium dibromide seems to be the most potent AChE reactivator. The reactivation potency of these compounds depends on structural factors such as length of the linking chain between both pyridinium rings and position of the oxime moiety on the pyridinium ring.

Abstract
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors represent standard treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Cholesterol plays an important role in Alzheimer's disease development. Because cholesterol synthesis may be inhibited by statins or bisphosphonates, we hypothesized that these drugs might possibly have an influence on cholinesterases. Moreover, we also evaluated if the cholesterol-lowering agents that cross the blood-brain barrier (e.g. simvastatin) should be more effective than those which do not (e.g. atorvastatin). Four groups of rats were orally administered simvastatin, atorvastatin, alendronate or vehicle for seven days. Thereafter, blood samples were taken and the basal ganglia, septum, frontal cortex, and hippocampus were isolated from brains for measurement of acetylcholinesterase activity. In the blood, activities of neither acetyl- nor butyrylcholinesterase were influenced by any of the applied drugs. In the brain, no significant changes in AChE activity were observed after administration of atorvastatin. Both simvastatin and alendronate significantly suppressed the activity of AChE in the frontal cortex. In conclusion, our results confirmed the hypothesis that cholesterol-modifying drugs modulate AChE activity and it is more reasonable to use a blood-brain barrier penetrating drug.

Abstract
Understanding the mechanism of action of organophosphates (OP)/nerve agents -- irreversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) inhibition at the cholinergic synapses followed by metabolic dysbalance of the organism -- two therapeutic principles for antidotal treatment are derived. The main drugs are anticholinergics that antagonize the effects of accumulated acetylcholine at the cholinergic synapses and cholinesterase reactivators (oximes) reactivating inhibited AChE. Anticonvulsants such as diazepam are also used to treat convulsions. Though there are experimental data on a good therapeutic effects of reactivators, some attempts to underestimate the role of reactivators as effective antidotes against OP poisoning have been made. Some arguments on the necessity of their administration following OP poisoning are discussed. Their distribution patterns and some metabolic and pharmacological effects are described with the aim to resolve the question on their effective use, possible repeated administration in the treatment of OP poisoning, their peripheral and central effects including questions on their penetration through the blood brain barrier as well as a possibility to achieve their effective concentration for AChE reactivation in the brain. Reactivation of cholinesterases in the peripheral and central nervous system is described and it is underlined its importance for the survival or death of the organism poisoned with OP. Metabolization and some other effects of oximes (not connected with AChE reactivation) are discussed (e.g. forming of the phosphonylated oxime, parasympatholytic action, hepatotoxicity, behavioral changes etc.). An universality of oximes able to reactivate AChE inhibited by all OP is questioned and therefore, needs of development of new oximes is underlined.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the reversible transfection of human melanocytes mediated by simian virus 40 large T antigen (SV40LTAg) and Cre/loxP site-specific recombination system. METHODS The reconstructed SV40LTAg-EGFP-neo-loxP vector was transfected into primary cultured human melanocytes with Sofast(TM) transfection reagent and the positive cells were selected using G418. After expanding culture of these positive cell clones, the expression of SV40LTAg was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunofluorescent method. After that, these positive cells were infected by virus supernatant of Cre-ER(T2) retrovirus vector and Cre recombinase was induced to act by tamoxifen. On the 6th and 10th day after Cre recombinase acting, the expression of SV40LTAg was detected using the same methods as above, and cell tumorigenicity was studied using soft agar assay, athymic mouse study and karyotype analysis. On 10th day after tamoxifen treatment, cell biological characters were identified with immunofluorescent staining and transmission electron microscopy. Then these cells were transplanted into vitiligo animal model to observe their melanogenesis ability in vivo. RESULTS The genome DNA and total RNA were isolated from the positive cells transfected by SV40LTAg (designated as MCT) and specific 288 bp fragment was amplificated using PCR and RT-PCR methods. The results of immunofluorescence confirmed the expression of SV40LTAg in cell nucleus. On the 6th day after tamoxifen treatment in infected cells by Cre-ER(T2) retrovirus vector (designated as MCT-Cre), there could be detected SV40LTAg expression, but on 10th day, there could not be detected SV40LTAg expression in cells. These results showed that the excised efficiency of Cre recombinase increased along with time prolongation, and would obtain complete recombination efficiency. The identification of MCT-Cre cell biological characters showed that these cells had normal parent-cell-like cell phenotype and no tumorigenicity in vitro. The pigmentation started in 4 weeks and formed black macula in 3 months after grafting. The pathological results showed that there had been significant melanocytes and melanin accumulation in epidermis and some hair follicle in transplanted area, which confirmed that MCT-Cre had melanogenesis function in vivo. CONCLUSION Human melanocytes could be mediated by reversible transfection by SV40LTAg and Cre/loxP site-specific recombination system, which had stable parent-cell-like phenotypic characters and no tumorigenicity in vitro; moreover, these cells still had melanogenesis function in vivo.

Abstract
Antioxidants perform an important role in the maintenance of the integrity of the living organisms. Recently, great attention has been given to antioxidants by a reason of their medical use. It is due to the association of many human diseases with oxidative stress. The present study briefly surveys the types of antioxidants, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and describes the basic mechanisms of their activity. The application of antioxidants in the therapy of the injury caused by sulfur mustard, a vesicant type chemical warfare agent introduced in World War I, is also given.

Abstract
Nerve agents can be divided into G-agents (sarin, soman, tabun, cyclosarin etc.) and V-agents. The studies dealing with V-agents (O-alkyl S-2-dialkylaminoethyl methyl phosphonothiolates) are limited to one or two representatives only (VX, Russian VX). Anticholinesterase properties of 11 V-agents were studied in rats in vivo. Following intoxication with these agents in doses of 1 x LD(50) (intramuscular administration), activities of cholinesterases in the blood were continuously monitored and half-lives (t(0.5)) of inhibition were determined. These values varied from 3 min (VX and some other agents) to 10-14 min (derivatives substituted on the phosphorus head by O-ethyl- or O-isopropyl-, and by dimethyl-, diethyl- and dibutyl- on the nitrogen). Acetylcholinesterase activities in selected parts of the brain and diaphragm (30 min after the intoxication) were also detected. A correlation between toxicities and rates of inhibition of the blood enzymes was demonstrated. A similar relationship between acetylcholinesterase inhibition in vitro (from literature data) and half-lives of the blood cholinesterases was also observed. Though the chemical similarity of V compounds is evident, marked differences were observed among different derivatives; however, all agents examined had high inhibition potency corresponding to their toxicities.

Abstract
Following repeated antidotal treatment of anaesthetized dogs (1 min with atropine, 10 min with atropine and obidoxime, 60 min with atropine and obidoxime) after the intoxication with soman, sarin and VX (1 x LD50, i.m.), the blood cholinesterases (erythrocyte, whole blood, plasma) were monitored and their reactivatability (whole blood) was determined. During this treatment, the activities of erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase (AChE), plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) and whole blood cholinesterases were monitored. Atropine and obidoxime did not affect cholinesterase activities in control animals, whereas administration of obidoxime to dogs intoxicated with nerve agent caused an increase in the cholinesterase activities. The sensitivity of cholinesterases decreased in the order erythrocyte AChE > whole blood cholinesterases > plasma BuChE, respectively. Following sarin intoxication, blood cholinesterases were increased after the obidoxime administration. Intoxication with VX showed a similar picture but reactivation after the obidoxime administration was greater. In soman intoxication, the picture of cholinesterase changes was similar during the first 30 min of treatment. Then the increase in AChE activity following obidoxime administration was not as high as in the case of sarin and VX intoxication. Thus, the reactivation efficacy of obidoxime during nerve agent intoxication indicates that its repeated administration could be easily monitored using the reactivation test.

Abstract
Insecticides (e.g., parathion, chlorpyrifos, methylchlorpyrifos) and nerve agents (e.g.. soman, sarin, tabun, VX) belong to the group of organophosphates. They are able to irreversibly inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Three new reactivators with a 3-oxapentane connecting chain were prepared. The ability of the new compounds to reactivate AChE inhibited by pesticides was tested in vitro and compared to known oxime 10(-3) M which is unfortunately not applicable to in vivo experiments. All tested compounds are practically ineffective for methylchlorpyrifos-inhibited AChE at the physiological concentration (10(-5) M). On the other hand, the known reactivators surpass new substances in the case of chlorpyrifos-inhibited AChE at both concentrations.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) and genetic algorithms are one group of methods called artificial intelligence. The application of ANN on pharmaceutical data can lead to an understanding of the inner structure of data and a possibility to build a model (adaptation). In addition, for certain cases it is possible to extract rules from data. The adapted ANN is prepared for the prediction of properties of compounds which were not used in the adaptation phase. The applications of ANN have great potential in pharmaceutical industry and in the interpretation of analytical, pharmacokinetic or toxicological data.

Abstract
The nerve agent tabun inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE; EC 3.1.1.7) by the formation of a covalent bond with the enzyme. Afterwards, AChE is not able to fulfil its role in the organism and subsequently cholinergic crisis occurs. AChE reactivators (pralidoxime, obidoxime and HI-6) as causal antidotes are used for the cleavage of the bond between the enzyme and nerve agent. Unfortunately, their potency for reactivation of tabun-inhibited AChE is poor. The aim of the study was to choose the most potent reactivator of tabun-inhibited AChE. We have tested eight AChE reactivators--pralidoxime, obidoxime, trimedoxime, HI-6, methoxime, Hlö-7 and our newly synthesized oximes K027 and K048. All reactivators were tested using our standard in vitro reactivation test (pH 8, 25 degrees C, time of inhibition by the nerve agent 30 minutes, time of reactivation by AChE reactivator 10 minutes). According to our results, only trimedoxime was able to achieve 50% reactivation potency. However, this relatively high potency was achieved at high oxime concentration (10(-2) M). At a lower concentration of 10(-4) M (the probably attainable concentration in vivo), four AChE reactivators (trimedoxime, obidoxime, K027, and K048) were able to reactivate AChE inhibited by tabun reaching from 10 to 18%.

Abstract
At the beginning of a new millennium, several important questions have come to the fore connected with the utilization of natural resources for the investigation of new medicaments (necessity of cooperation of both highly developed and developing countries in the protection of natural resources, necessity to justly evaluate and reward the contributions of the individual cultures in the case that a knowledge of traditional medicine was employed in the development of a new medicament, necessity to achieve the maximal chemical variety of real and virtual libraries of substances from which potential drugs are selected for screening tests). The research of chalcones and its analogues which are relatively easily available not only by isolation from natural material, but also by the methods of classical and combinatorial synthesis should not be substantially affected by the above-described changes. The present communication links up with previous papers (Opletalová, V., Sedivý, D.: Ces. slov. Farm. 48, 252 (1999); Opletalová, V.: Ces. slov. Farm. 49, 278 (2000); Opletalová, V. et al.: Folia Pharm. Univ. Carol. 25, 21 (2000)) and is devoted to the stabilizing action of chalcones on the vascular wall, vasodilating and anti-aggregating effects, and a favourable effect of their antioxidative activity on the functions of the cardiovascular system. The introduction also briefly discusses the nomenclature of this group of compounds.

Abstract
Phenotypically, ganciclovir-resistant human cytomegalovirus strains could be selected by aciclovir as effectively as by ganciclovir in vitro. Three clinical human cytomegalovirus isolates with different sensitivities against ganciclovir, aciclovir, foscarnet, and cidofovir, but without any mutation in the viral UL97 protein known to confer ganciclovir resistance, were propagated each in duplicate in the presence of ganciclovir or aciclovir. After drug selection, all 12 strains were less susceptible to ganciclovir (increase of 50% focus reduction dose between 2.1- and 31.5-fold) but were still sensitive to foscarnet and cidofovir; 7/12 exhibited a ganciclovir-resistant phenotype with a 50% focus reduction dose >30 microM, and in 6 out of these typical mutations in the UL97 coding region could be found by genotyping. All four strains selected from one isolate carried the identical UL97 mutation at amino acid position 460 (methionine to valine). The decreased sensitivity to ganciclovir and aciclovir in the other strains could neither be attributed to known UL97 mutations nor to mutations in the viral polymerase (UL54), which have been reported to induce resistance.
