A high-performance organic lithium salt-doped OFET with the optical radical effect for photoelectric pulse synaptic simulation and neuromorphic memory learning

Simulation of synaptic characteristics is essential for the application of organic field effect transistors (OFETs) in neural morphology. Although excellent performance, including bias stability and mobility, as well as photoelectric pulse synaptic simulation, has been achieved in SiO2-gated OFETs with PDVT-10 as an organic channel, there are relatively few studies on photoelectric pulse synaptic simulation of electrolyte-gated OFETs based on environmentally friendly and low-voltage operation. Herein, synaptic transistors based on organic semiconductors are reported to simulate the photoelectric pulse response by developing solution-based organic semiconductor PDVT-10, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with an electric double layer (EDL) effect to act as a channel and gate dielectric layer, respectively, and organic lithium salt-doped PVA is used to enhance the EDL effect. The presence of electrical pulses in doped devices not only achieves basic electrical synaptic characteristics, but also significantly realizes the long-term characteristics, pain perception, memory and sensitization applications. Furthermore, the introduction of photoinitiator molecules into the channel layer leads to improved photosynaptic performances by using light-induced free radicals, and the photoelectric synergistic effect has been actualized by introducing heterojunction architecture. This work provides promising prospects for achieving photoelectric pulse modulation based on organic synaptic devices, which shows great potential for the development of artificial intelligence.

Direct Laser Writing: From Materials Synthesis and Conversion to Electronic Device Processing

Direct Laser Writing (DLW) has been increasingly selected as a microfabrication route for efficient, cost-effective, high-resolution material synthesis and conversion. Concurrently, lasers participate in the patterning and assembly of functional geometries in several fields of application, of which electronics stand out. In this review, recent advances and strategies based on DLW for electronics microfabrication are surveyed and outlined, based on laser material growth strategies. First, the main DLW parameters influencing material synthesis and transformation mechanisms are summarized, aimed at selective, tailored writing of conductive and semiconducting materials. Additive and transformative DLW processing mechanisms are discussed, to open space to explore several categories of materials directly synthesized or transformed for electronics microfabrication. These include metallic conductors, metal oxides, transition metal chalcogenides and carbides, laser-induced graphene, and their mixtures. By accessing a wide range of material types, DLW-based electronic applications are explored, including processing components, energy harvesting and storage, sensing, and bioelectronics. The expanded capability of lasers to participate in multiple fabrication steps at different implementation levels, from material engineering to device processing, indicates their future applicability to next-generation electronics, where more accessible, green microfabrication approaches integrate lasers as comprehensive tools.

Rational approach to design gold nanoparticles for photothermal therapy: the effect of gold salt on physicochemical, optical and biological properties

Among the unique characteristics associated to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in biomedicine, their ability to convert light energy into heat opens ventures for improved cancer therapeutic options, such as photothermal therapy (PTT). PTT relies on the local hyperthermia of tumor cells upon irradiation with light beams, and the association of AuNPs with radiation within the near infrared (NIR) range constitutes an advantageous strategy to potentially improve PTT efficacy. Herein, it was explored the effect of the gold salt on the AuNPs' physicochemical and optical properties. Mostly spherical-like negatively charged AuNPs with variable sizes and absorbance spectra were obtained. In addition, photothermal features were assessed using in vitro phantom models. The best formulation showed the ability to increase their temperature in aqueous solution up to 19 °C when irradiated with a NIR laser for 20 min. Moreover, scanning transmission electron microscopy confirmed the rearrangement of the gold atoms in a face-centered cubic structure, which further allowed to calculate the photothermal conversion efficiency upon combination of theoretical and experimental data. AuNPs also showed local retention after being locally administered in in vivo models. These last results obtained by computerized tomography allow to consider these AuNPs as promising elements for a PTT system. Moreover, AuNPs showed high potential for PTT by resulting in in vitro cancer cells' viability reductions superior to 70 % once combine with 5 min of NIR irradiation.

MXene-Enhanced Nanoscale Photoconduction in Perovskite Solar Cells Revealed by Conductive Atomic Force Microscopy

The use of MXene materials in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has received significant interest due to their distinct features that result from the termination of functional groups and the oxidation of MXene. Herein, we have used photoconductive atomic force microscopy (pcAFM) to map the local (nanoscale) photovoltaic performances of the Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheet-integrated TiO2 (MXene@TiO2) electron transport layer-based PSCs to determine the influence of the treatment on the microscopic charge flow inside the devices. At different applied voltages, the morphology and current have been simultaneously measured with nanoscale resolution from the top surfaces of the solar cells without back contacts. The PSCs based on MXene@TiO2 exhibit more enhanced current flow across the grains than the only TiO2-based PSCs. At zero applied bias, the average local photocurrent for MXene-integrated PSCs is several times higher than the reference PSCs and decreases gradually when the positive bias is increased until the open circuit voltage. Considerable differences were also observed in the short circuit current among different locations that appear identical in AFM topography. Our findings reveal the potential of MXene-integrated ETLs to enhance the nanoscale photoconduction and inherent characteristics of the active layers, thereby improving the performance of the polycrystalline photovoltaic devices.

A simple polystyrene microfluidic device for sensitive and accurate SERS-based detection of infection by malaria parasites

Early and accurate detection of infection by pathogenic microorganisms, such as Plasmodium, the causative agent of malaria, is critical for clinical diagnosis and ultimately determines the patient's outcome. We have combined a polystyrene-based microfluidic device with an immunoassay which utilises Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) to detect malaria. The method can be easily translated to a point-of-care testing format and shows excellent sensitivity and specificity, when compared to the gold standard for laboratorial detection of Plasmodium infections. The device can be fabricated in less than 30 min by direct patterning on shrinkable polystyrene sheets of adaptable three-dimensional microfluidic chips. To validate the microfluidic system, samples of P. falciparum-infected red blood cell cultures were used. The SERS-based immunoassay enabled the detection of 0.0012 ± 0.0001% parasitaemia in a P. falciparum-infected red blood cell culture supernatant, an ∼7-fold higher sensitivity than that attained by most rapid diagnostic tests. Our approach successfully overcomes the main challenges of the current Plasmodium detection methods, including increased reproducibility, sensitivity, and specificity. Furthermore, our system can be easily adapted for detection of other pathogens and has excellent properties for early diagnosis of infectious diseases, a decisive step towards lowering their high burden on healthcare systems worldwide.

Open-source tool for real-time and automated analysis of droplet-based microfluidic

Droplet-based microfluidic technology is a powerful tool for generating large numbers of monodispersed nanoliter-sized droplets for ultra-high throughput screening of molecules or single cells. Yet further progress in the development of methods for the real-time detection and measurement of passing droplets is needed for achieving fully automated systems and ultimately scalability. Existing droplet monitoring technologies are either difficult to implement by non-experts or require complex experimentation setups. Moreover, commercially available monitoring equipment is expensive and therefore limited to a few laboratories worldwide. In this work, we validated for the first time an easy-to-use, open-source Bonsai visual programming language to accurately measure in real-time droplets generated in a microfluidic device. With this method, droplets are found and characterized from bright-field images with high processing speed. We used off-the-shelf components to achieve an optical system that allows sensitive image-based, label-free, and cost-effective monitoring. As a test of its use we present the results, in terms of droplet radius, circulation speed and production frequency, of our method and compared its performance with that of the widely-used ImageJ software. Moreover, we show that similar results are obtained regardless of the degree of expertise. Finally, our goal is to provide a robust, simple to integrate, and user-friendly tool for monitoring droplets, capable of helping researchers to get started in the laboratory immediately, even without programming experience, enabling analysis and reporting of droplet data in real-time and closed-loop experiments.

Hybrid Digital-Droplet Microfluidic Chip for Applications in Droplet Digital Nucleic Acid Amplification: Design, Fabrication and Characterization

Microfluidic-based platforms have become a hallmark for chemical and biological assays, empowering micro- and nano-reaction vessels. The fusion of microfluidic technologies (digital microfluidics, continuous-flow microfluidics, and droplet microfluidics, just to name a few) presents great potential for overcoming the inherent limitations of each approach, while also elevating their respective strengths. This work exploits the combination of digital microfluidics (DMF) and droplet microfluidics (DrMF) on a single substrate, where DMF enables droplet mixing and further acts as a controlled liquid supplier for a high-throughput nano-liter droplet generator. Droplet generation is performed at a flow-focusing region, operating on dual pressure: negative pressure applied to the aqueous phase and positive pressure applied to the oil phase. We evaluate the droplets produced with our hybrid DMF-DrMF devices in terms of droplet volume, speed, and production frequency and further compare them with standalone DrMF devices. Both types of devices enable customizable droplet production (various volumes and circulation speeds), yet hybrid DMF-DrMF devices yield more controlled droplet production while achieving throughputs that are similar to standalone DrMF devices. These hybrid devices enable the production of up to four droplets per second, which reach a maximum circulation speed close to 1540 µm/s and volumes as low as 0.5 nL.

Parylene C as a Multipurpose Material for Electronics and Microfluidics

Poly(p-xylylene) derivatives, widely known as Parylenes, have been considerably adopted by the scientific community for several applications, ranging from simple passive coatings to active device components. Here, we explore the thermal, structural, and electrical properties of Parylene C, and further present a variety of electronic devices featuring this polymer: transistors, capacitors, and digital microfluidic (DMF) devices. We evaluate transistors produced with Parylene C as a dielectric, substrate, and encapsulation layer, either semitransparent or fully transparent. Such transistors exhibit steep transfer curves and subthreshold slopes of 0.26 V/dec, negligible gate leak currents, and fair mobilities. Furthermore, we characterize MIM (metal-insulator-metal) structures with Parylene C as a dielectric and demonstrate the functionality of the polymer deposited in single and double layers under temperature and AC signal stimuli, mimicking the DMF stimuli. Applying temperature generally leads to a decrease in the capacitance of the dielectric layer, whereas applying an AC signal leads to an increase in said capacitance for double-layered Parylene C only. By applying the two stimuli, the capacitance seems to suffer from a balanced influence of both the separated stimuli. Lastly, we demonstrate that DMF devices with double-layered Parylene C allow for faster droplet motion and enable long nucleic acid amplification reactions.

Truly form-factor-free industrially scalable system integration for electronic textile architectures with multifunctional fiber devices

An integrated textile electronic system is reported here, enabling a truly free form factor system via textile manufacturing integration of fiber-based electronic components. Intelligent and smart systems require freedom of form factor, unrestricted design, and unlimited scale. Initial attempts to develop conductive fibers and textile electronics failed to achieve reliable integration and performance required for industrial-scale manufacturing of technical textiles by standard weaving technologies. Here, we present a textile electronic system with functional one-dimensional devices, including fiber photodetectors (as an input device), fiber supercapacitors (as an energy storage device), fiber field-effect transistors (as an electronic driving device), and fiber quantum dot light-emitting diodes (as an output device). As a proof of concept applicable to smart homes, a textile electronic system composed of multiple functional fiber components is demonstrated, enabling luminance modulation and letter indication depending on sunlight intensity.

Leveraging the future of diagnosis and management of diabetes: From old indexes to new technologies

BACKGROUND

Diabetes is a heterogeneous and multifactorial disease. However, glycemia and glycated hemoglobin have been the focus of diabetes diagnosis and management for the last decades. As diabetes management goes far beyond glucose control, it has become clear that assessment of other biochemical parameters gives a much wider view of the metabolic state of each individual, enabling a precision medicine approach.

METHODS

In this review, we summarize and discuss indexes that have been used in epidemiological studies and in the clinical practice.

RESULTS

Indexes of insulin secretion, sensitivity/resistance and metabolism have been developed and validated over the years to account also with insulin, C-peptide, triglycerides or even anthropometric measures. Nevertheless, each one has their own objective and consequently, advantages and disadvantages for specific cases. Thus, we discuss how new technologies, namely new sensors but also new softwares/applications, can improve the diagnosis and management of diabetes, both for healthcare professionals but also for caretakers and, importantly, to promote the empowerment of people living with diabetes.

CONCLUSIONS

In long-term, the solution for a better diabetes management would be a platform that allows to integrate all sorts of relevant information for the person with diabetes and for the healthcare practitioners, namely glucose, insulin and C-peptide or, in case of need, other parameters/indexes at home, sometimes more than once a day. This solution would allow a better and simpler disease management, more adequate therapeutics thereby improving patients' quality of life and reducing associated costs.

Microwave Synthesis of Visible-Light-Activated g-C3N4/TiO2 Photocatalysts

The preparation of visible-light-driven photocatalysts has become highly appealing for environmental remediation through simple, fast and green chemical methods. The current study reports the synthesis and characterization of graphitic carbon nitride/titanium dioxide (g-C₃N₄/TiO₂) heterostructures through a fast (1 h) and simple microwave-assisted approach. Different g-C₃N₄ amounts mixed with TiO₂ (15, 30 and 45 wt. %) were investigated for the photocatalytic degradation of a recalcitrant azo dye (methyl orange (MO)) under solar simulating light. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the anatase TiO₂ phase for the pure material and all heterostructures produced. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that by increasing the amount of g-C₃N₄ in the synthesis, large TiO₂ aggregates composed of irregularly shaped particles were disintegrated and resulted in smaller ones, composing a film that covered the g-C₃N₄ nanosheets. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analyses confirmed the existence of an effective interface between a g-C₃N₄ nanosheet and a TiO₂ nanocrystal. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) evidenced no chemical alterations to both g-C₃N₄ and TiO₂ at the heterostructure. The visible-light absorption shift was indicated by the red shift in the absorption onset through the ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) absorption spectra. The 30 wt. % of g-C₃N₄/TiO₂ heterostructure showed the best photocatalytic performance, with a MO dye degradation of 85% in 4 h, corresponding to an enhanced efficiency of almost 2 and 10 times greater than that of pure TiO₂ and g-C₃N₄ nanosheets, respectively. Superoxide radical species were found to be the most active radical species in the MO photodegradation process. The creation of a type-II heterostructure is highly suggested due to the negligible participation of hydroxyl radical species in the photodegradation process. The superior photocatalytic activity was attributed to the synergy of g-C₃N₄ and TiO₂ materials.

Alkali-Doped Nanopaper Membranes Applied as a Gate Dielectric in FETs and Logic Gates with an Enhanced Dynamic Response

The market for flexible, hybrid, and printed electronic systems, which can appear in everything from sensors and wearables to displays and lighting, is still uncertain. What is clear is that these systems are appearing every day, enabling devices and systems that can, in the near future, be crumpled up and tucked in our pockets. Within this context, cellulose-based modified nanopapers were developed to serve both as a physical support and a gate dielectric layer in field-effect transistors (FETs) that are fully recyclable. It was found that the impregnation of those nanopapers with sodium (Na⁺) ions allows for low operating voltage FETs (<3 V), with mobility above 10 cm² V^-1 s^-1, current modulation surpassing 10⁵, and an improved dynamic response. Thus, it was possible to implement those transistors into simple circuits such as inverters, reaching a clear discrimination between logic states. Besides the overall improvement in electrical performance, these devices have shown to be an interesting alternative for reliable, sustainable, and flexible electronics, maintaining proper operation even under stress conditions.

Water Peel-Off Transfer of Electronically Enhanced, Paper-Based Laser-Induced Graphene for Wearable Electronics

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has gained preponderance in recent years, as a very attractive material for the fabrication and patterning of graphitic structures and electrodes, for multiple applications in electronics. Typically, polymeric substrates, such as polyimide, have been used as precursor materials, but other organic, more sustainable, and accessible precursor materials have emerged as viable alternatives, including cellulose substrates. However, these substrates have lacked the conductive and chemical properties achieved by conventional LIG precursor substrates and have not been translated into fully flexible, wearable scenarios. In this work, we expand the conductive properties of paper-based LIG, by boosting the graphitization potential of paper, through the introduction of external aromatic moieties and meticulous control of laser fluence. Colored wax printing over the paper substrates introduces aromatic chemical structures, allowing for the synthesis of LIG chemical structures with sheet resistances as low as 5 Ω·sq^-1, translating to an apparent conductivity as high as 28.2 S·cm^-1. Regarding chemical properties, I_D/I_G ratios of 0.28 showcase low defect densities of LIG chemical structures and improve on previous reports on paper-based LIG, where sheet resistance has been limited to values around 30 Ω·sq^-1, with more defect dense and less crystalline chemical structures. With these improved properties, a simple transfer methodology was developed, based on a water-induced peel-off process that efficiently separates patterned LIG structures from the native paper substrates to conformable, flexible substrates, harnessing the multifunctional capabilities of LIG toward multiple applications in wearable electronics. Proof-of concept electrodes for electrochemical sensors, strain sensors, and in-plane microsupercapacitors were patterned, transferred, and characterized, using paper as a high-value LIG precursor for multiples scenarios in wearable technologies, for improved sustainability and accessibility of such applications.

Microfluidic SERS devices: brightening the future of bioanalysis

A new avenue has opened up for applications of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in the biomedical field, mainly due to the striking advantages offered by SERS tags. SERS tags provide indirect identification of analytes with rich and highly specific spectral fingerprint information, high sensitivity, and outstanding multiplexing potential, making them very useful in in vitro and in vivo assays. The recent and innovative advances in nanomaterial science, novel Raman reporters, and emerging bioconjugation protocols have helped develop ultra-bright SERS tags as powerful tools for multiplex SERS-based detection and diagnosis applications. Nevertheless, to translate SERS platforms to real-world problems, some challenges, especially for clinical applications, must be addressed. This review presents the current understanding of the factors influencing the quality of SERS tags and the strategies commonly employed to improve not only spectral quality but the specificity and reproducibility of the interaction of the analyte with the target ligand. It further explores some of the most common approaches which have emerged for coupling SERS with microfluidic technologies, for biomedical applications. The importance of understanding microfluidic production and characterisation to yield excellent device quality while ensuring high throughput production are emphasised and explored, after which, the challenges and approaches developed to fulfil the potential that SERS-based microfluidics have to offer are described.

An ultra-sensitive electrochemical biosensor using the Spike protein for capturing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in point-of-care

This work presents an innovative ultra-sensitive biosensor having the Spike protein on carbon-based screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), for monitoring in point-of-care antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, a very important tool for epidemiological monitoring of COVID-19 infection and establishing vaccination schemes. In an innovative and simple approach, a highly conductive support is combined with the direct adsorption of Spike protein to enable an extensive antibody capture. The high conductivity was ensured by using carboxylated carbon nanotubes on the carbon electrode, by means of a simple and quick approach, which also increased the surface area. These were then modified with EDC/NHS chemistry to produce an amine layer and undergo Spike protein adsorption, to generate a stable layer capable of capturing the antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in serum with great sensitivity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to evaluate the analytical performance of this biosensor in serum. It displayed a linear response between 1.0 ​pg/mL and 10 ​ng/mL, with a detection limit of ∼0.7 ​pg/mL. The analysis of human positive sera containing antibody in a wide range of concentrations yielded accurate data, correlating well with the reference method. It also offered the unique ability of discriminating antibody concentrations in sera below 2.3 ​μg/mL, the lowest value detected by the commercial method. In addition, a proof-of-concept study was performed by labelling anti-IgG antibodies with quantum dots to explore a new electrochemical readout based on the signal generated upon binding to the anti-S protein antibodies recognised on the surface of the biosensor. Overall, the alternative serologic assay presented is a promising tool for assessing protective immunity to SARS-CoV-2 and a potential guide for revaccination.

Bandlike Transport in FaPbBr3 Quantum Dot Phototransistor with High Hole Mobility and Ultrahigh Photodetectivity

Halide perovskites have been widely explored for numerous optoelectronic applications among which phototransistors have appeared as one of the most promising light signal detectors. However, it is still a great challenge to endow halide perovskites with both mobility and high photosensitivity because of their high sensitivity to moisture in ambient atmosphere. Here, we explore an FAPbBr₃ perovskite quantum dot (QD) phototransistor with bandlike charge transport and measure a dark hole mobility of 14.2 cm² V^-1 s^-1 at ambient atmosphere. Attaining both high mobility and good optical figures of merit, a detectivity of ∼10¹⁶ Jones is achieved, which is a record for halide perovskite nanocrystals. Simple A-site salt (FABr) treatments offer a mechanism for connecting between perovskite QDs for better charge transfer in high-quality devices. All of these important properties are superior to most advanced inorganic semiconductor phototransistors, indicating a promising future in optoelectronic applications.

Carbon-Yarn-Based Supercapacitors with In Situ Regenerated Cellulose Hydrogel for Sustainable Wearable Electronics

Developing sustainable options for energy storage in textiles is needed to power future wearable "Internet of Things" (IoT) electronics. This process must consider disruptive alternatives that address questions of sustainability, reuse, repair, or even a second life application. Herein, we pair stretch-broken carbon fiber yarns (SBCFYs), as current collectors, and an in situ regenerated cellulose-based ionic hydrogel (RCIH), as an electrolyte, to fabricate 1D fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSCs). The areal specific capacitance reaches 433.02 μF·cm^-2 at 5 μA·cm^-2, while the specific energy density is 1.73 × 10^-2 μWh·cm^-2. The maximum achieved specific power density is 5.33 × 10^-1 mW·cm^-2 at 1 mA·cm^-2. The 1D FSCs possess a long-life cycle and 92% capacitance retention after 10 000 consecutive voltammetry cycles, higher than similar ones using the reference PVA/H₃PO₄ gel electrolyte. Additionally, the feasibility and reproducibility of the produced devices were demonstrated by connecting three devices in series and parallel, showing a small variation of the current density in flat and bent positions. An environmentally responsible approach was implemented by recovering the active materials from the 1D FSCs and reusing or recycling them without compromising the electrochemical performance, thus ensuring a circular economy path.

Characterisation of Films Based on Exopolysaccharides from Alteromonas Strains Isolated from French Polynesia Marine Environments

This work assessed the film-forming capacity of exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by six Alteromonas strains recently isolated from different marine environments in French Polynesia atolls. The films were transparent and resulted in small colour alterations when applied over a coloured surface (ΔEab below 12.6 in the five different colours tested). Moreover, scanning electron microscopy showed that the EPS films were dense and compact, with a smooth surface. High water vapour permeabilities were observed (2.7-6.1 × 10-11 mol m-1 s-1 Pa-1), which are characteristic of hydrophilic polysaccharide films. The films were also characterised in terms of barrier properties to oxygen and carbon dioxide. Interestingly, different behaviours in terms of their mechanical properties under tensile tests were observed: three of the EPS films were ductile with high elongation at break (ε) (35.6-47.0%), low tensile strength at break (Ꞇ) (4.55-11.7 MPa) and low Young's modulus (εm) (10-93 MPa), whereas the other three were stiffer and more resistant with a higher Ꞇ (16.6-23.6 MPa), lower ε (2.80-5.58%), and higher εm (597-1100 MPa). These properties demonstrate the potential of Alteromonas sp. EPS films to be applied in different areas such as biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, or food packaging.

Biocompatible Parylene-C Laser-Induced Graphene Electrodes for Microsupercapacitor Applications

Laser irradiation of polymeric materials has drawn great attention as a fast, simple, and cost-effective method for the formation of porous graphene films that can be subsequently fabricated into low-cost and flexible electronic and energy-storage devices. In this work, we report a systematic study of the formation of laser-induced graphene (LIG) with sheet resistances as low as 9.4 Ω/sq on parylene-C ultrathin membranes under a CO₂ infrared laser. Raman analysis proved the formation of the multilayered graphenic material, with I_D/I_G and I_2D/I_G peak ratios of 0.42 and 0.65, respectively. As a proof of concept, parylene-C LIG was used as the electrode material for the fabrication of ultrathin, solid-state microsupercapacitors (MSCs) via a one-step, scalable, and cost-effective approach, aiming at future flexible and wearable applications. The produced LIG-MSC on parylene-C exhibited good electrochemical behavior, with a specific capacitance of 1.66 mF/cm² and an excellent cycling stability of 96% after 10 000 cycles (0.5 mA/cm²). This work allows one to further extend the knowledge in LIG processes, widening the group of precursor materials as well as promoting future applications. Furthermore, it reinforces the potential of parylene-C as a key material for next-generation biocompatible and flexible electronic devices.

Copper-Arsenic-Sulfide Thin-Films from Local Raw Materials Deposited via RF Co-Sputtering for Photovoltaics

The inexorable increase of energy demand and the efficiency bottleneck of monocrystalline silicon solar cell technology is promoting the research and development of alternative photovoltaic materials. Copper-arsenic-sulfide (CAS) compounds are still rather unexplored in the literature, yet they have been regarded as promising candidates for use as p-type absorber in solar cells, owing to their broad raw material availability, suitable bandgap and high absorption coefficient. Here, a comprehensive study is presented on the structural and optoelectronic properties of CAS thin-films deposited via radio-frequency magnetron co-sputtering, using a commercial Cu target together with a Cu-As-S target with material obtained from local resources, specifically from mines in the Portuguese region of the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Raman and X-ray diffraction analysis confirm that the use of two targets results in films with pronounced stoichiometry gradients, suggesting a transition from amorphous CAS compounds to crystalline djurleite (Cu₃₁S₁₆), with the increasing proximity to the Cu target. Resistivity values from 4.7 mΩ·cm to 17.4 Ω·cm are obtained, being the lowest resistive films, those with pronounced sub-bandgap free-carrier absorption. The bandgap values range from 2.20 to 2.65 eV, indicating promising application as wide-bandgap semiconductors in third-generation (e.g., multi-junction) photovoltaic devices.

Solution Combustion Synthesis of Hafnium-Doped Indium Oxide Thin Films for Transparent Conductors

Indium oxide (In₂O₃)-based transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) have been widely used and studied for a variety of applications, such as optoelectronic devices. However, some of the more promising dopants (zirconium, hafnium, and tantalum) for this oxide have not received much attention, as studies have mainly focused on tin and zinc, and even fewer have been explored by solution processes. This work focuses on developing solution-combustion-processed hafnium (Hf)-doped In₂O₃ thin films and evaluating different annealing parameters on TCO’s properties using a low environmental impact solvent. Optimized TCOs were achieved for 0.5 M% Hf-doped In₂O₃ when produced at 400 °C, showing high transparency in the visible range of the spectrum, a bulk resistivity of 5.73 × 10⁻² Ω.cm, a mobility of 6.65 cm²/V.s, and a carrier concentration of 1.72 × 10¹⁹ cm⁻³. Then, these results were improved by using rapid thermal annealing (RTA) for 10 min at 600 °C, reaching a bulk resistivity of 3.95 × 10 ⁻³ Ω.cm, a mobility of 21 cm²/V.s, and a carrier concentration of 7.98 × 10¹⁹ cm⁻³, in air. The present work brings solution-based TCOs a step closer to low-cost optoelectronic applications.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Zn2SnO4 Nanostructures for Photodegradation of Rhodamine B under UV and Sunlight

The contamination of water resources by pollutants resulting from human activities represents a major concern nowadays. One promising alternative to solve this problem is the photocatalytic process, which has demonstrated very promising and efficient results. Oxide nanostructures are interesting alternatives for these applications since they present wide band gaps and high surface areas. Among the photocatalytic oxide nanostructures, zinc tin oxide (ZTO) presents itself as an eco-friendly alternative since its composition includes abundant and non-toxic zinc and tin, instead of critical elements. Moreover, ZTO nanostructures have a multiplicity of structures and morphologies possible to be obtained through low-cost solution-based syntheses. In this context, the current work presents an optimization of ZTO nanostructures (polyhedrons, nanoplates, and nanoparticles) obtained by microwave irradiation-assisted hydrothermal synthesis, toward photocatalytic applications. The nanostructures’ photocatalytic activity in the degradation of rhodamine B under both ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and natural sunlight was evaluated. Among the various morphologies, ZTO nanoparticles revealed the best performance, with degradation > 90% being achieved in 60 min under UV irradiation and in 90 min under natural sunlight. The eco-friendly production process and the demonstrated ability of these nanostructures to be used in various water decontamination processes reinforces their sustainability and the role they can play in a circular economy.

Bioconversion of Terephthalic Acid and Ethylene Glycol Into Bacterial Cellulose by Komagataeibacter xylinus DSM 2004 and DSM 46604

Komagataeibacter xylinus strains DSM 2004 and DSM 46604 were evaluated for their ability to grow and produce bacterial cellulose (BC) upon cultivation on terephthalic acid (TA) and ethylene glycol (EG), which are monomers of the petrochemical-derived plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Both strains were able to utilize TA, EG, and their mixtures for BC synthesis, with different performances. K. xylinus DSM 2004 achieved higher BC production from TA (0.81 ± 0.01 g/L), EG (0.64 ± 0.02 g/L), and TA + EG mixtures (0.6 ± 0.1 g/L) than strain DSM 46604. The latter was unable to utilize EG as the sole carbon source and reached a BC production of 0.16 ± 0.01 g/L and 0.23 ± 0.1 g/L from TA alone or TA + EG mixtures, respectively. Further supplementing the media with glucose enhanced BC production by both strains. During cultivation on media containing TA and EG, rapid pH drop due to metabolization of EG into acidic compounds led to some precipitation of TA that was impregnated into the BC pellicles. An adaptation of the downstream procedure involving BC dissolution in NaOH was used for the recovery of pure BC. The different medium composition tested, as well as the downstream procedure, impacted the BC pellicles’ physical properties. Although no variation in terms of the chemical structure were observed, differences in crystallinity degree and microstructure of the produced BC were observed. The BC produced by K. xylinus DSM 2004 had a higher crystallinity (19–64%) than that of the strain DSM 46604 (17–53%). Moreover, the scanning electron microscopy analysis showed a higher fiber diameter for K. xylinus DSM 2004 BC (46–56 nm) than for K. xylinus DSM 46604 (37–49 nm). Dissolution of BC in NaOH did not influence the chemical structure; however, it led to BC conversion from type I to type II, as well as a decrease in crystallinity. These results demonstrate that PET monomers, TA and EG, can be upcycled into a value-added product, BC, presenting an approach that will contribute to lessening the environmental burden caused by plastic disposal in the environment.

Stacking-Dependent Electrical Transport in a Colloidal CdSe Nanoplatelet Thin-Film Transistor

Here, we report an exceptional feature of the one-dimensional threadlike assemblies of a four-monolayer colloidal CdSe nanoplatelet (NPL)-based thin-film transistor. A series of different lengths of threads (200-1200 nm) was used as an active n channel in thin-film transistors (TFTs) to understand the change in mobility with the length of the threads. The film with the longest threads shows the highest conductivity of ∼12 S/cm and electron mobility of ∼14.3 cm² V^-1 s^-1 for an applied gate voltage of 2 V. The mobility trends with the length seem to be driven mostly by the lower defects in threads, where the loss of electron hopping is less. Furthermore, our results show the mobility trends in stacking-dependent CdSe NPL threads and provide a new insight into fabricating high-mobility TFTs with the use of colloidal CdSe NPLs.

Digital Microfluidics-Powered Real-Time Monitoring of Isothermal DNA Amplification of Cancer Biomarker

We introduce a digital microfluidics (DMF) platform specifically designed to perform a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) of DNA and applied it to a real-time amplification to monitor a cancer biomarker, c-Myc (associated to 40% of all human tumors), using fluorescence microscopy. We demonstrate the full manipulation of the sample and reagents on the DMF platform, resulting in the successful amplification of 90 pg of the target DNA (0.5 ng/µL) in less than one hour. Furthermore, we test the efficiency of an innovative mixing strategy in DMF by employing two mixing methodologies onto the DMF droplets-low frequency AC (alternating current) actuation as well as back-and-forth droplet motion-which allows for improved fluorescence readouts. Fluorophore bleaching effects are minimized through on-chip sample partitioning by DMF processes and sequential droplet irradiation. Finally, LAMP reactions require only 2 µL volume droplets, which represents a 10-fold volume reduction in comparison to benchtop LAMP.

Enhanced Fe-TiO2 Solar Photocatalysts on Porous Platforms for Water Purification

In this study, polyethylene glycol-modified titanium dioxide (PEG-modified TiO2) nanopowders were prepared using a fast solvothermal method under microwave irradiation, and without any further calcination processes. These nanopowders were further impregnated on porous polymeric platforms by drop-casting. The effect of adding iron with different molar ratios (1, 2, and 5%) of iron precursor was investigated. The characterization of the produced materials was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. Optical characterization of all the materials was also carried out. SEM showed that pure TiO2 and Fe-TiO2 nanostructures presented similar nanosized and spherical particles, which uniformly covered the substrates. From XRD, pure TiO2 anatase was obtained for all nanopowders produced, which was further confirmed by Raman spectroscopy on the impregnated substrates. XPS and UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy emission spectra revealed that the presence of Fe ions on the Fe-TiO2 nanostructures led to the introduction of new intermediate energy levels, as well as defects that contributed to an enhancement in the photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic results under solar radiation demonstrated increased photocatalytic activity in the presence of the 5% Fe-TiO2 nanostructures (Rhodamine B degradation of 85% after 3.5 h, compared to 74% with pure TiO2 for the same exposure time). The photodegradation rate of RhB dye with the Fe-TiO2 substrate was 1.5-times faster than pure TiO2. Reusability tests were also performed. The approach developed in this work originated novel functionalized photocatalytic platforms, which were revealed to be promising for the removal of organic dyes from wastewater.

Emergent solution based IGZO memristor towards neuromorphic applications

Solution-based memristors are emergent devices, due to their potential in electrical performance for neuromorphic computing combined with simple and cheap fabrication processes. However, to achieve practical application in crossbar design tens to hundreds of uniform memristors are required. Regarding this, the production step optimization should be considered as the main objective to achieve high performance devices. In this work, solution-based indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) memristor devices are produced using a combustion synthesis process. The performance of the device is optimized by using different annealing temperatures and active layer thicknesses to reach a higher reproducibility and stability. All IGZO memristors show a low operating voltage, good endurance, and retention up to 10⁵ s under air conditions. The optimized devices can be programmed in a multi-level cell operation mode, with 8 different resistive states. Also, preliminary results reveal synaptic behavior by replicating the plasticity of a synaptic junction through potentiation and depression; this is a significant step towards low-cost processes and large-scale compatibility of neuromorphic computing systems.

A Review on the Applications of Graphene in Mechanical Transduction

A pressing need to develop low-cost, environmentally friendly, and sensitive sensors has arisen with the advent of the always-connected paradigm of the internet-of-things (IoT). In particular, mechanical sensors have been widely studied in recent years for applications ranging from health monitoring, through mechanical biosignals, to structure integrity analysis. On the other hand, innovative ways to implement mechanical actuation have also been the focus of intense research in an attempt to close the circle of human-machine interaction, and move toward applications in flexible electronics. Due to its potential scalability, disposability, and outstanding properties, graphene has been thoroughly studied in the field of mechanical transduction. The applications of graphene in mechanical transduction are reviewed here. An overview of sensor and actuator applications is provided, covering different transduction mechanisms such as piezoresistivity, capacitive sensing, optically interrogated displacement, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, electrostatic actuation, chemomechanical and thermomechanical actuation, as well as thermoacoustic emission. A critical review of the main approaches is presented within the scope of a wider discussion on the future of this so-called wonder material in the field of mechanical transduction.

Light management with quantum nanostructured dots-in-host semiconductors

Insightful knowledge on quantum nanostructured materials is paramount to engineer and exploit their vast gamut of applications. Here, a formalism based on the single-band effective mass equation was developed to determine the light absorption of colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) embedded in a wider bandgap semiconductor host, employing only three parameters (dots/host potential barrier, effective mass, and QD size). It was ascertained how to tune such parameters to design the energy level structure and consequent optical response. Our findings show that the CQD size has the biggest effect on the number and energy of the confined levels, while the potential barrier causes a linear shift of their values. While smaller QDs allow wider energetic separation between levels (as desired for most quantum-based technologies), the larger dots with higher number of levels are those that exhibit the strongest absorption. Nevertheless, it was unprecedently shown that such quantum-enabled absorption coefficients can reach the levels (10⁴-10⁵cm^-1) of bulk semiconductors.

Paper-Based Biosensors for COVID-19: A Review of Innovative Tools for Controlling the Pandemic

The appearance and quick spread of the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease, COVID-19, brought major societal challenges. Importantly, suitable medical diagnosis procedures and smooth clinical management of the disease are an emergent need, which must be anchored on novel diagnostic methods and devices. Novel molecular diagnostic tools relying on nucleic acid amplification testing have emerged globally and are the current gold standard in COVID-19 diagnosis. However, the need for widespread testing methodologies for fast, effective testing in multiple epidemiological scenarios remains a crucial step in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Biosensors have previously shown the potential for cost-effective and accessible diagnostics, finding applications in settings where conventional, laboratorial techniques may not be readily employed. Paper- and cellulose-based biosensors can be particularly relevant in pandemic times, for the renewability, possibility of mass production with sustainable methodologies, and safe environmental disposal. In this review, paper-based devices and platforms targeting SARS-CoV-2 are showcased and discussed, as a means to achieve quick and low-cost PoC diagnosis, including detection methodologies for viral genomic material, viral antigen detection, and serological antibody testing. Devices targeting inflammatory markers relevant for COVID-19 are also discussed, as fast, reliable bedside diagnostic tools for patient treatment and follow-up.

Enhanced solar photocatalysis of TiO2 nanoparticles and nanostructured thin films grown on paper

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles and nanostructured thin films were simultaneously synthesized using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The synthesis formed very fine particles, appearing as nanospheres in the 11 nm size range. As for the nanostructured films, they have displayed similar structural characteristics to the nanoparticles, with thickness of 130 nm. These films covered uniformly and homogenously the Whatman paper, while maintaining its flexibility. The materials processed had their photocatalytic activity assessed from rhodamine B degradation under solar radiation (91% degradation after 40 min for the powder material and 68% after 6 h for the nanostructured thin films). Reusability experiments were also carried out, revealing superior performance concerning the Degussa P25, the most common photocatalyst used. The results of the present work can be thought as an option for the existing photocatalysts activated under solar light, namely for water purification, as it simultaneously produces enhanced photocatalytic powders and photocatalytic papers fully disposable and that can be easily recycled.

Interindividual heterogeneity affects the outcome of human cardiac tissue decellularization

The extracellular matrix (ECM) of engineered human cardiac tissues corresponds to simplistic biomaterials that allow tissue assembly, or animal derived off-the-shelf non-cardiac specific matrices. Decellularized ECM from human cardiac tissue could provide a means to improve the mimicry of engineered human cardiac tissues. Decellularization of cardiac tissue samples using immersion-based methods can produce acceptable cardiac ECM scaffolds; however, these protocols are mostly described for animal tissue preparations. We have tested four methods to decellularize human cardiac tissue and evaluated their efficiency in terms of cell removal and preservation of key ECM components, such as collagens and sulfated glycosaminoglycans. Extended exposure to decellularization agents, namely sodium dodecyl sulfate and Triton-X-100, was needed to significantly remove DNA content by approximately 93% in all human donors. However, the biochemical composition of decellularized tissue is affected, and the preservation of ECM architecture is donor dependent. Our results indicate that standardization of decellularization protocols for human tissue is likely unfeasible, and a compromise between cell removal and ECM preservation must be established in accordance with the scaffold's intended application. Notwithstanding, decellularized human cardiac ECM supported human induced pluripotent-derived cardiomyocyte (hiPSC-CM) attachment and retention for up to 2 weeks of culture, and promoted cell alignment and contraction, providing evidence it could be a valuable tool for cardiac tissue engineering.

Reusable and highly sensitive SERS immunoassay utilizing gold nanostars and a cellulose hydrogel-based platform

The development of robust and sensitive point-of-care testing platforms is necessary to improve patient care and outcomes. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based immunosensors are especially suited for this purpose. Here, we present a highly sensitive and selective SERS immunoassay, demonstrating for example the detection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), in a sandwich format. The strength of our biosensor lies in merging: (i) SERS-immunotags based on gold nanostars, allowing exceptional intense SERS from attached Raman probes, covalent attachment of anti-HRP antibodies by a simple chemical method providing exceptional antigen binding activity; (ii) the ease of preparation of the capture platform from a regenerated cellulose-based hydrogel, a transparent material, ideal for microfluidics applications, with low background fluorescence and Raman signal, particularly suited for preserving high activity of the covalently bound anti-HRP antibodies. The sandwich complexes formed were characterised by atomic force microscopy, and by scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron diffraction spectroscopy; and (iii) the robustness of the simple Classical Least Squares method for SERS data analysis, resulting in superior discrimination of SERS signals from the background and much better data fitting, compared to the commonly used peak integral method. Our SERS immunoassay greatly improves the detection limits of traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay approaches, and its performance is better or comparable to those of existing SERS-based immunosensors. Our approach successfully overcomes the main challenges of application at point-of-care, including increasing reproducibility, sensitivity, and specificity, associated with an environmentally friendly and robust design. Also, the proposed design withstands several cycles of regeneration, a feature absent in paper-SERS immunoassays and this opens the way for sensitive multiplexing applications on a microfluidic platform.

Preparation and Characterization of Porous Scaffolds Based on Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)

Poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) with different material properties, namely, the homopolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), P(3HB), and the copolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate, P(3HB-co-3HV), with a 3HV of 25 wt.%, were used for the preparation of porous biopolymeric scaffolds. Solvent casting with particulate leaching (SCPL) and emulsion templating were evaluated to process these biopolymers in porous scaffolds. SCPL scaffolds were highly hydrophilic (>170% swelling in water) but fragile, probably due to the increase of the polymer’s polydispersity index and its high porosity (>50%). In contrast, the emulsion templating technique resulted in scaffolds with a good compromise between porosity (27–49% porosity) and hydrophilicity (>30% water swelling) and without impairing their mechanical properties (3.18–3.35 MPa tensile strength and 0.07–0.11 MPa Young’s Modulus). These specifications are in the same range compared to other polymer-based scaffolds developed for tissue engineering. P(3HB-co-3HV) displayed the best overall properties, namely, lower crystallinity (11.3%) and higher flexibility (14.8% elongation at break. Our findings highlight the potency of our natural biopolyesters for the future development of novel porous scaffolds in tissue engineering, thanks also to their safety and biodegradability.

Colloidal Lithography for Photovoltaics: An Attractive Route for Light Management

The pursuit of ever-more efficient, reliable, and affordable solar cells has pushed the development of nano/micro-technological solutions capable of boosting photovoltaic (PV) performance without significantly increasing costs. One of the most relevant solutions is based on light management via photonic wavelength-sized structures, as these enable pronounced efficiency improvements by reducing reflection and by trapping the light inside the devices. Furthermore, optimized microstructured coatings allow self-cleaning functionality via effective water repulsion, which reduces the accumulation of dust and particles that cause shading. Nevertheless, when it comes to market deployment, nano/micro-patterning strategies can only find application in the PV industry if their integration does not require high additional costs or delays in high-throughput solar cell manufacturing. As such, colloidal lithography (CL) is considered the preferential structuring method for PV, as it is an inexpensive and highly scalable soft-patterning technique allowing nanoscopic precision over indefinitely large areas. Tuning specific parameters, such as the size of colloids, shape, monodispersity, and final arrangement, CL enables the production of various templates/masks for different purposes and applications. This review intends to compile several recent high-profile works on this subject and how they can influence the future of solar electricity.

Ionic Conductive Cellulose Mats by Solution Blow Spinning as Substrate and a Dielectric Interstrate Layer for Flexible Electronics

Renewable cellulose substrates with submicron- and nanoscale structures have revived interest in paper electronics. However, the processes behind their production are still complex and time- and energy-consuming. Besides, the weak electrolytic properties of cellulose with submicron- and nanoscale structures have hindered its application in transistors and integrated circuits with low-voltage operation. Here, we report a simple, low-cost approach to produce flexible ionic conductive cellulose mats using solution blow spinning, which are used both as dielectric interstrate and substrate in low-voltage devices. The electrochemical properties of the cellulose mats are tuned through infiltration with alkali hydroxides (LiOH, NaOH, or KOH), enabling their application as dielectric and substrate in flexible, low-voltage, oxide-based field-effect transistors and pencil-drawn resistor-loaded inverters. The transistors exhibit good transistor performances under operation voltage below 2.5 V, and their electrical performance is strictly related to the type of alkali ionic specie incorporated. Devices fabricated on K⁺-infiltrated cellulose mats present the best characteristics, indicating pure capacitive charging of the semiconductor. The pencil-drawn load resistor inverter presents good dynamic performance. These findings may pave the way for a new generation of low-power, wearable electronics, enabling concepts such as the "Internet of Things".

Molecular Imprinting on Nanozymes for Sensing Applications

As part of the biomimetic enzyme field, nanomaterial-based artificial enzymes, or nanozymes, have been recognized as highly stable and low-cost alternatives to their natural counterparts. The discovery of enzyme-like activities in nanomaterials triggered a broad range of designs with various composition, size, and shape. An overview of the properties of nanozymes is given, including some examples of enzyme mimics for multiple biosensing approaches. The limitations of nanozymes regarding lack of selectivity and low catalytic efficiency may be surpassed by their easy surface modification, and it is possible to tune specific properties. From this perspective, molecularly imprinted polymers have been successfully combined with nanozymes as biomimetic receptors conferring selectivity and improving catalytic performance. Compelling works on constructing imprinted polymer layers on nanozymes to achieve enhanced catalytic efficiency and selective recognition, requisites for broad implementation in biosensing devices, are reviewed. Multimodal biomimetic enzyme-like biosensing platforms can offer additional advantages concerning responsiveness to different microenvironments and external stimuli. Ultimately, progress in biomimetic imprinted nanozymes may open new horizons in a wide range of biosensing applications.

Oxygen Plasma Treated-Electrospun Polyhydroxyalkanoate Scaffolds for Hydrophilicity Improvement and Cell Adhesion

Poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) with differing material properties, namely, the homopolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), P(3HB), the copolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), P(3HB-co-3HV), with a 3HV content of 25 wt.% and a medium chain length PHA, and mcl-PHA, mainly composed of 3-hydroxydecanoate, were studied as scaffolding material for cell culture. P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV) were individually spun into fibers, as well as blends of the mcl-PHA with each of the scl-PHAs. An overall biopolymer concentration of 4 wt.% was used to prepare the electrospinning solutions, using chloroform as the solvent. A stable electrospinning process and good quality fibers were obtained for a solution flow rate of 0.5 mL h⁻¹, a needle tip collector distance of 20 cm and a voltage of 12 kV for P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV) solutions, while for the mcl-PHA the distance was increased to 25 cm and the voltage to 15 kV. The scaffolds’ hydrophilicity was significantly increased under exposure to oxygen plasma as a surface treatment. Complete wetting was obtained for the oxygen plasma treated scaffolds and the water uptake degree increased in all treated scaffolds. The biopolymers crystallinity was not affected by the electrospinning process, while their treatment with oxygen plasma decreased their crystalline fraction. Human dermal fibroblasts were able to adhere and proliferate within the electrospun PHA-based scaffolds. The P(3HB-co-3HV): mcl-PHA oxygen plasma treated scaffold highlighted the most promising results with a cell adhesion rate of 40 ± 8%, compared to 14 ± 4% for the commercial oxygen plasma treated polystyrene scaffold Alvetex^TM. Scaffolds based on P(3HB-co-3HV): mcl-PHA blends produced by electrospinning and submitted to oxygen plasma exposure are therefore promising biomaterials for the development of scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Laser-Induced Graphene from Paper for Mechanical Sensing

The ability to synthesize laser-induced graphene (LIG) on cellulosic materials such as paper opens the door to a wide range of potential applications, from consumer electronics to biomonitoring. In this work, strain and bending sensors fabricated by irradiation of regular filter paper with a CO₂ laser are presented. A systematic study of the influence of the different process parameters on the conversion of cellulose fibers into LIG is undertaken, by analyzing the resulting morphology, structure, conductivity, and surface chemistry. The obtained material is characterized by porous electrically conductive weblike structures with sheet resistances reaching as low as 32 Ω sq^-1. The functionality of both strain (gauge factor of ≈42) and bending sensors is demonstrated for different sensing configurations, emphasizing the versatility and potential of this material for low-cost, sustainable, and environmentally friendly mechanical sensing.

Human Extracellular-Matrix Functionalization of 3D hiPSC-Based Cardiac Tissues Improves Cardiomyocyte Maturation

Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) possess significant therapeutic potential due to their high self-renewal capability and potential to differentiate into specialized cells such as cardiomyocytes. However, generated hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CM) are still immature, with phenotypic and functional features resembling the fetal rather than their adult counterparts, which limits their application in cell-based therapies, in vitro cardiac disease modeling, and drug cardiotoxicity screening. Recent discoveries have demonstrated the potential of the extracellular matrix (ECM) as a critical regulator in development, homeostasis, and injury of the cardiac microenvironment. Within this context, this work aimed to assess the impact of human cardiac ECM in the phenotype and maturation features of hiPSC-CM. Human ECM was isolated from myocardium tissue through a physical decellularization approach. The cardiac tissue decellularization process reduced DNA content significantly while maintaining ECM composition in terms of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (s-GAG) and collagen content. These ECM particles were successfully incorporated in three-dimensional (3D) hiPSC-CM aggregates (CM+ECM) with no impact on viability and metabolic activity throughout 20 days in 3D culture conditions. Also, CM+ECM aggregates displayed organized and longer sarcomeres, with improved calcium handling when compared to hiPSC-CM aggregates. This study shows that human cardiac ECM functionalization of hiPSC-based cardiac tissues improves cardiomyocyte maturation. The knowledge generated herein provides essential insights to streamline the application of ECM in the development of hiPSC-based therapies targeting cardiac diseases.

Recent Progress in Solution-Based Metal Oxide Resistive Switching Devices

Metal oxide resistive switching memories have been a crucial component for the requirements of the Internet of Things, which demands ultra-low power and high-density devices with new computing principles, exploiting low cost green products and technologies. Most of the reported resistive switching devices use conventional methods (physical and chemical vapor deposition), which are quite expensive due to their up-scale production. Solution-processing methods have been improved, being now a reliable technology that offers many advantages for resistive random-access memory (RRAM) such as high versatility, large area uniformity, transparency, low-cost and a simple fabrication of two-terminal structures. Solution-based metal oxide RRAM devices are emergent and promising non-volatile memories for future electronics. In this review, a brief history of non-volatile memories is highlighted as well as the present status of solution-based metal oxide resistive random-access memory (S-RRAM). Then, a focus on describing the solution synthesis parameters of S-RRAMs which induce a massive influence in the overall performance of these devices is discussed. Next, a precise analysis is performed on the metal oxide thin film and electrode interface and the recent advances on S-RRAM that will allow their large-area manufacturing. Finally, the figures of merit and the main challenges in S-RRAMs are discussed and future trends are proposed.

Paper Microfluidics and Tailored Gold Nanoparticles for Nonenzymatic, Colorimetric Multiplex Biomarker Detection

The plasmonic properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are a promising tool to develop sensing alternatives to traditional, enzyme-catalyzed reactions. The need for sensing alternatives, especially in underdeveloped areas of the world, has given rise to the application of nonenzymatic sensing approaches paired with cellulosic substrates to biochemical analysis. Herein, we present three individual, low-step, wet-chemistry, colorimetric assays for three target biomarkers, namely, glucose, uric acid, and free cholesterol, relevant in diabetes control and their translation into paper-based assays and microfluidic platforms for multiplexed analysis. For glucose determination, an in situ AuNPs synthesis approach was applied into the developed μPAD, giving semiquantitative measures in the physiologically relevant range. For uric acid and cholesterol determination, modified AuNPs were used to functionalize paper with a gold-on-paper approach with the optical properties changing based on different aggregation degrees and hydrophobic properties of particles dependent on analyte concentration. These paper-based assays show sensitivity ranges and limits of detection compatible for target analyte level determination and detection limits comparable to those of similar enzymatic, colorimetric systems, relying only on plasmonic transduction without the need for enzymatic activity or other chromogenic substrates. The resulting paper-based assays were integrated into a single 3D, multiplex paper-based device using paper microfluidics, showing the capability for performing different colorimetric assays with distinct requirements in terms of sample flow and sample uptake in test zones using a combination of both horizontal and vertical flows inside the same device. The presented device allows for multiparametric, colorimetric measures of different metabolite levels from a single complex sample matrix drop using digital color analysis, showing the potential for development of low-cost, low-complexity tools for diagnostics toward the point-of-care.

Production of medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates by Pseudomonas chlororaphis subsp. aurantiaca: Cultivation on fruit pulp waste and polymer characterization

Pseudomonas chlororaphis subsp. aurantiaca DSM 19603 was cultivated on apple pulp, a glucose- and fructose-rich waste generated during juice production, to produce medium-chain length polyhydroxyalkanoates. A cell dry mass of 8.74 ± 0.20 g/L, with a polymer content of 49.25 ± 4.08% were attained. The produced biopolymer was composed of 42.7 ± 0.1 mol% 3-hydroxydecanoate, 17.9 ± 1.0 mol% 3-hydroxyoctanoate, 14.5 ± 1.1 mol% 3-hydroxybutyrate, 11.1 ± 0.6 mol% 3-hydroxytetradecanoate, 10.1 ± 0.5 mol% 3-hydroxydodecanoate and 3.7 ± 0.2 mol% 3-hydroxyhexanoate. It presented low glass transition and melting temperatures (-40.9 ± 0.7 °C and 42.0 ± 0.1 °C, respectively), and a degradation temperature of 300.0 ± 0.1 °C, coupled to a low crystallinity index (12.7 ± 2.7%), a molecular weight (Mw) of 1.34 × 10⁵ ± 0.18 × 10⁵ Da and a polydispersity index of 2.70 ± 0.03. The biopolymer's films were dense and had a smooth surface, as demonstrated by Scanning Electron Microscopy. They presented a tension at break of 5.21 ± 1.09 MPa, together with an elongation of 400.5 ± 55.8% and an associated Young modulus of 4.86 ± 1.49 MPa, under tensile tests. These attractive filming properties of this biopolymer could potentially be valorised in several areas such as the fine chemicals industry, biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, or food packaging.

Toward Stable Solution-Processed High-Mobility p-Type Thin Film Transistors Based on Halide Perovskites

Organolead halide perovskites have drawn significant attention from the scientific community as one of the most attractive materials in optoelectronics, especially in the field of photovoltaics. In this study, we focus on using halide perovskites in processing thin film transistors (TFTs). Halide perovskites have high solution processability and excellent carrier transport characteristics, in particular for holes. The present work aims to fill a gap in oxide-based technology. It concerns the process of using high-stable and reliable p-type oxide-based devices to target CMOS technology (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor). We report on a solution-processed high-performance TFT based on methylammonium lead iodide (CH₃NH₃PbI₃) perovskite semiconductor films, which shows promise for devices that can be simple to manufacture with high reliability, reproducibility, and excellent stability in atmospheric conditions. To achieve a highly stable perovskite semiconductor film, we introduce diethylsulfide in the perovskite precursor. The TFT shows a stable p-type behavior when operated at low voltages (≤-2 V) and has a current modulation of >10⁴, an almost negligible hysteresis, and average saturation mobility of about 18.8 cm² V^-1 s^-1, taken over 50 devices tested (the highest one measured was ∼23.2 cm² V^-1 s^-1). This is the highest value until now reported in the literature. In addition, we demonstrate that perovskite TFTs can be fabricated at temperatures as low as 150 °C on flexible substrates with a saturation mobility of ∼11.5 cm² V^-1 s^-1. The high-performance perovskite TFT with excellent stability is a promising candidate for the next generation of p-type transistors for a plethora of low-cost electronics applications.

Toward a Microencapsulated 3D hiPSC-Derived in vitro Cardiac Microtissue for Recapitulation of Human Heart Microenvironment Features

The combination of cardiomyocytes (CM) and non-myocyte cardiac populations, such as endothelial cells (EC), and mesenchymal cells (MC), has been shown to be critical for recapitulation of the human heart tissue for in vitro cell-based modeling. However, most of the current engineered cardiac microtissues still rely on either (i) murine/human limited primary cell sources, (ii) animal-derived and undefined hydrogels/matrices with batch-to-batch variability, or (iii) culture systems with low compliance with pharmacological high-throughput screenings. In this work, we explored a culture platform based on alginate microencapsulation and suspension culture systems to develop three-dimensional (3D) human cardiac microtissues, which entails the co-culture of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) cardiac derivatives including aggregates of hiPSC–CM and single cells of hiPSC–derived EC and MC (hiPSC–EC+MC). We demonstrate that the 3D human cardiac microtissues can be cultured for 15 days in dynamic conditions while maintaining the viability and phenotype of all cell populations. Noteworthy, we show that hiPSC–EC+MC survival was promoted by the co-culture with hiPSC–CM as compared to the control single-cell culture. Additionally, the presence of the hiPSC–EC+MC induced changes in the physical properties of the biomaterial, as observed by an increase in the elastic modulus of the cardiac microtissue when compared to the hiPSC–CM control culture. Detailed characterization of the 3D cardiac microtissues revealed that the crosstalk between hiPSC–CM, hiPSC–EC+MC, and extracellular matrix induced the maturation of hiPSC–CM. The cardiac microtissues displayed functional calcium signaling and respond to known cardiotoxins in a dose-dependent manner. This study is a step forward on the development of novel 3D cardiac microtissues that recapitulate features of the human cardiac microenvironment and is compliant with the larger numbers needed in preclinical research for toxicity assessment and disease modeling.

Paper-Based In-Situ Gold Nanoparticle Synthesis for Colorimetric, Non-Enzymatic Glucose Level Determination

Due to its properties, paper represents an alternative to perform point-of-care tests for colorimetric determination of glucose levels, providing simple, rapid, and inexpensive means of diagnosis. In this work, we report the development of a novel, rapid, disposable, inexpensive, enzyme-free, and colorimetric paper-based assay for glucose level determination. This sensing strategy is based on the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by reduction of a gold salt precursor, in which glucose acts simultaneously as reducing and capping agent. This leads to a direct measurement of glucose without any enzymes or depending on the detection of intermediate products as in conventional enzymatic colorimetric methods. Firstly, we modelled the synthesis reaction of AuNPs to determine the optical, morphological, and kinetic properties and their manipulation for glucose sensing, by determining the influence of each of the reaction precursors towards the produced AuNPs, providing a guide for the manipulation of nucleation and growth. The adaptation of this synthesis into the developed paper platform was tested and calibrated using different standard solutions with physiological concentrations of glucose. The response of the colorimetric signals obtained with this paper-based platform showed a linear behavior until 20 mM, required for glycemic control in diabetes, using the Red × Value/Grey feature combination as a calibration metric, to describe the variations in color intensity and hue in the spot test zone. The colorimetric sensor revealed a detection limit of 0.65 mM, depending on calibration metric and sensitivity of 0.013 AU/mM for a linear sensitivity range from 1.25 to 20 mM, with high specificity for the determination of glucose in complex standards with other common reducing interferents and human serum.
