Abstract
Background
Differentiation of tumor progression (TP) from pseudoprogression (PsP) is a major unmet need in glioblastoma (GBM). 18F-Fluciclovine is a synthetic amino acid PET radiotracer with higher uptake in tumor tissue vs. areas of treatment-related change. We aimed to assess the combined value of 18F-Fluciclovine PET and multi-parametric MRI for differentiating PsP from TP.
Material and Methods
We enrolled 30 patients with GBM with a new or enlarging contrast-enhancing lesion on MRI after chemoradiotherapy who were planned for surgical resection of the lesion. Patients underwent pre-operative 18F-Fluciclovine PET and multi-parametric MRI. Following surgery, the relative percentages of viable tumor and therapy-related changes observed on histopathology were quantified. Patients were categorized as TP if viable tumor represented ≥ 50% of the specimen, mixed TP if < 50% and > 10%, and PsP if ≤ 10%. SUVmax, SUVpeak, and 50% threshold SUVmean were calculated and normalized to contralateral brain, pituitary gland, and superior sagittal sinus (SSS). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) was used to determine the variables most predictive of tumor percentage. The strength of association between the primary outcome and selected variables was assessed by Pearson’s or Point-biserial correlation.
Results
18 patients with TP, 4 with mixed TP-PsP, and 8 with PsP were included. There was a positive correlation between 50% threshold SUV mean measured from PET images acquired 50-60 minutes post-injection and rCBVmax by MRI and tumor percentage by histology (r= 0.56; p= 0.004 and r=0.50; p=0.012 respectively). 40-50 minutes SUVmax (OR=1.78 rpb=0.51) and rCBVmax (OR=1.64, rpb=0.48) were positively correlated with tumor TP/mixed TP group. Patients who demonstrated TP/mixed TP-PsP had significantly higher 40-50 minutes SUVmax compared to patients with histological PsP (6.71±2.03 vs 3.93±1.63; p=0.012). 40-50 minutes SUVmax cut-off of 4.46 provided 90% sensitivity and 80% specificity for differentiation of TP/mixed TP-PsP from PsP (AUC=0.88). Combining a 40-50 minutes SUVmax cut-off of 4.46 and an rCBVmax cut-off of 3.67 provided 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity for differentiating TP/mixed TP-PsP from PsP (AUC=1). Patients who demonstrated TP had a significantly higher 40-50 minutes SUVmax compared to patients with histological PsP (6.99±2.06 vs 3.93±1.63; p=0.008). A 40-50 minutes SUVmax cut-off of 4.66 provided 94% sensitivity and 80% specificity for differentiation of TP from PsP (AUC=0.89).
Conclusion
18F-Fluciclovine PET uptake is positively correlated with viable tumor quantification on histology and can accurately differentiate PsP from TP in patients with GBM. Further independent studies are required to cross-validate these promising early results.

AbstractThe graph edit distance is an intuitive measure to quantify the dissimilarity of graphs, but its computation is $$\mathsf {NP}$$

-hard and challenging in practice. We introduce methods for answering nearest neighbor and range queries regarding this distance efficiently for large databases with up to millions of graphs. We build on the filter-verification paradigm, where lower and upper bounds are used to reduce the number of exact computations of the graph edit distance. Highly effective bounds for this involve solving a linear assignment problem for each graph in the database, which is prohibitive in massive datasets. Index-based approaches typically provide only weak bounds leading to high computational costs verification. In this work, we derive novel lower bounds for efficient filtering from restricted assignment problems, where the cost function is a tree metric. This special case allows embedding the costs of optimal assignments isometrically into $$\ell _1$$

space, rendering efficient indexing possible. We propose several lower bounds of the graph edit distance obtained from tree metrics reflecting the edit costs, which are combined for effective filtering. Our method termed EmbAssi can be integrated into existing filter-verification pipelines as a fast and effective pre-filtering step. Empirically we show that for many real-world graphs our lower bounds are already close to the exact graph edit distance, while our index construction and search scales to very large databases.

Abstract
By helping the user find relevant and important online content, news recommenders have the potential to fulfill a crucial role in a democratic society. Simultaneously, recent concerns about filter bubbles, fake news and selective exposure are symptomatic of the disruptive potential of these digital news recommenders. Recommender systems can make or break filter bubbles, and as such can be instrumental in creating either a more closed or a more open internet. This document details a pitch for an ongoing project that aims to bridge the gap between normative notions of diversity, rooted in democratic theory, and quantitative metrics necessary for evaluating the recommender system. Our aim is to get feedback on a set of proposed metrics grounded in social science interpretations of diversity.

Abstract
AbstractSlanted news coverage, also called media bias, can heavily influence how news consumers interpret and react to the news. Models to identify and describe biases have been proposed across various scientific fields, focusing mostly on English media. In this paper, we propose a method for analyzing media bias in German media. We test different natural language processing techniques and combinations thereof. Specifically, we combine an IDF-based component, a specially created bias lexicon, and a linguistic lexicon. We also flexibly extend our lexica by the usage of word embeddings. We evaluate the system and methods in a survey (N = 46), comparing the bias words our system detected to human annotations. So far, the best component combination results in an F$$_{1}$$
1
score of 0.31 of words that were identified as biased by our system and our study participants. The low performance shows that the analysis of media bias is still a difficult task, but using fewer resources, we achieved the same performance on the same task than recent research on English. We summarize the next steps in improving the resources and the overall results.

Abstract
Datasets are an integral part of contemporary research on recommender systems. However, few datasets are available for conventional recommender systems and even very limited datasets are available when it comes to contextualized (time and location-dependent) News Recommender Systems. In this paper, we introduce an educational news dataset for recommender systems. This dataset is the refined version of the earlier published Adressa dataset and intends to support the university students in the educational purpose. We discuss the structure and purpose of the refined dataset in this paper.

Abstract
Can music be rated consistently using nonverbal descriptors such as colours and temperatures? 144 participants rated 6 experimenter-selected and 2 self-selected pieces of music along 15 bipolar icon (graphic) scales intended to portray emotions, and sensory experiences consisting of colour, temperature, shape, speed, texture, and weight. Participants also rated the same pieces using bipolar verbal scales which aimed to encompass the concepts represented by the icons (e.g., the word "red" for the colour red). Furthermore, the icons themselves were subjected to open-ended verbal labelling to validate the icon scale. Colour icons spontaneously evoked a cross-modal association on 67% of occasions: blue being cool, and red/orange being warm or hot, and the icon scale had overall good face validity. Music regularly and consistently evoked multisensory associations (using the icon scale) including shapes, colours, weight, and temperatures, in addition to emotions. Cross-modal perception is indicative of music's character rather than the enjoyment of the music. The icon scale provides new insights into music perception and for applications where language skill may limit participant expression.

Abstract
While propagating in transparent media, near-infrared multiterawatt (TW) laser beams break up in a multitude of filaments of typically 100-200 um diameter with peak intensities as high as 10 to 100 TW/cm^{2}. We observe a phase transition at incident beam intensities of 0.4 TW/cm^{2}, where the interaction between filaments induce solidlike two-dimensional crystals with a 2.7 mm lattice constant, independent of the initial beam diameter. Below 0.4 TW/cm^{2}, we evidence a mixed phase state in which some filaments are closely packed in localized clusters, nucleated on inhomogeneities (seeds) in the transverse intensity profile of the beam, and other are sparse with almost no interaction with their neighbors, similar to a gas. This analogy with a thermodynamic gas-solid phase transition is confirmed by calculating the interaction Hamiltonian between neighboring filaments, which takes into account the effect of diffraction, Kerr self-focusing, and plasma generation. The shape of the effective potential is close to a Morse potential with an equilibrium bond length close to the observed value.

Abstract
An optical microscope is described that reveals contrast in the Mueller matrix images of a thin, transparent, or semi-transparent specimen located within an anisotropic object plane (anisotropic filter). The specimen changes the anisotropy of the filter and thereby produces contrast within the Mueller matrix images. Here we use an anisotropic filter composed of a semi-transparent, nanostructured thin film with sub-wavelength thickness placed within the object plane. The sample is illuminated as in common optical microscopy but the light is modulated in its polarization using combinations of linear polarizers and phase plate (compensator) to control and analyze the state of polarization. Direct generalized ellipsometry data analysis approaches permit extraction of fundamental Mueller matrix object plane images dispensing with the need of Fourier expansion methods. Generalized ellipsometry model approaches are used for quantitative image analyses. These images are obtained from sets of multiple images obtained under various polarizer, analyzer, and compensator settings. Up to 16 independent Mueller matrix images can be obtained, while our current setup is limited to 11 images normalized by the unpolarized intensity. We demonstrate the anisotropic contrast optical microscope by measuring lithographically defined micro-patterned anisotropic filters, and we quantify the adsorption of an organic self-assembled monolayer film onto the anisotropic filter. Comparison with an isotropic glass slide demonstrates the image enhancement obtained by our method over microscopy without the use of an anisotropic filter. In our current instrument, we estimate the limit of detection for organic volumetric mass within the object plane of ≈49 fg within ≈7 × 7 μm2 object surface area. Compared to a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation instrumentation, where contemporary limits require a total load of ≈500 pg for detection, the instrumentation demonstrated here improves sensitivity to a total mass required for detection by 4 orders of magnitude. We detail the design and operation principles of the anisotropic contrast optical microscope, and we present further applications to the detection of nanoparticles, to novel approaches for imaging chromatography and to new contrast modalities for observations on living cells.

Abstract
Early liver transplantation (LT) in European centers reportedly improved survival in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis (AH) not responding to medical therapy. Our aim was to determine if a strategy of early LT for severe AH could be applied successfully in the United States. We reviewed 111 patients with severe AH at our center from January 2012 to January 2015. The primary end point was mortality at 6 months or early LT, with a secondary end point of alcohol relapse after LT. Survival was compared between those receiving early LT and matched patients who did not. Using a process similar to the European trial, 94 patients with severe AH not responding to medical therapy were evaluated for early LT. Overall, 9 (9.6%) candidates with favorable psychosocial profiles underwent early LT, comprising 3% of all adult LT during the study period. The 6-month survival rate was higher among those receiving early LT compared with matched controls (89% vs 11%, p<0.001). Eight recipients are alive at a median of 735 days with 1 alcohol relapse. Early LT for severe AH can achieve excellent clinical outcomes with low impact on the donor pool and low rates of alcohol relapse in highly selected patients in the United States.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Only sparse data exist about children with septic shock in Europe. The present study aimed to evaluate demographics, treatment, outcome and risk factors for mortality in Western Germany. PATIENTS Children with septic shock aged 2 months to 17 years. METHODS In a multi-center retrospective study of 20 children's hospitals data were obtained and analyzed by chart review. Risk factors for mortality were identified and assessed by multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS Overall mortality in 83 cases with septic shock was 25% (21 patients). Significant risk factors were high PRISM III score, low pH, low arterial systolic blood pressure, presence of disseminated intravascular coagulation and extent of multi-organ failure, but not lactate (p=0.05) and base excess (p=0.065). Mortality in hospitals which treated 10 or more patients (category 1) was 17% and increased to 22% in hospitals which treated 3-6 patients (category 2). In hospitals with only 1 or 2 patients (category 3) mortality rate was 61% (p<0.01 when compared to category 1 or 2). A stepwise increase was also seen in the severely sick patients according to PRISM III (>19): category 1: 23%, category 2: 40%, category 3: 62.5% (p<0.05 for comparison of category 1 and 3). Multivariate analysis of significant risk factors revealed low number of treated patients as the only individual risk factor for mortality. CONCLUSION Mortality from pediatric septic shock in an urban area in Western Germany is high. Disease severity and treatment in a department with few cases were associated with increased mortality.

Abstract
Voltage-tunable quantum traps confining individual spatially indirect and long-living excitons are realized by providing a coupled double quantum well with nanoscale gates. This enables us to study the transition from confined multiexcitons down to a single, electrostatically trapped indirect exciton. In the few exciton regime, we observe discrete emission lines identified as resulting from a single dipolar exciton, a biexciton, and a triexciton, respectively. Their energetic splitting is well described by Wigner-like molecular structures reflecting the interplay of dipolar interexcitonic repulsion and spatial quantization.

Abstract
ABSTRACTWe demonstrate that the anisotropic optical response of metal (cobalt) slanted columnar thin films (STF) at THz frequencies strongly depends on the dielectric properties of the dielectric ambient surrounding the slanted columnar thin films. An effective medium dielectric function approach is used to describe the combined optical response of metal slanted columnar thin film and dielectric ambient. Our observations indicate that metal (cobalt) slanted columnar thin films can be used as sensors which will enable detection and characterization of minute amounts of dielectrics at THz frequencies, such as for flow-based detection of liquid chemical constituents.

Abstract
ABSTRACTIt is investigated how figures of merits of nanocomposites are affected by structural and interaction length scales. Aside from macroscopic effects without characteristic lengths scales and atomic-scale quantum-mechanical interactions there are nanoscale interactions that reflect a competition between different energy contributions. We consider three systems, namely dielectric media, carbon-black reinforced rubbers and magnetic composites. In all cases, it is relatively easy to determine effective materials constants, which do not involve specific length scales. Nucleation and breakdown phenomena tend to occur on a nanoscale and yield a logarithmic dependence of figures of merit on the macroscopic system size. Essential system-specific differences arise because figures of merits are generally nonlinear energy integrals. Furthermore, different physical interactions yield different length scales. Abstract
Generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry is used to determine the form-induced birefringence and monoclinic optical constants of chromium columnar thin films. The slanted nanocolumns were deposited by glancing angle deposition under 85 degrees incidence and are tilted from the surface normal. Dichroism measured for wavelengths from 400 to 1000 nm renders the Cr nanocolumns monoclinic absorbing crystals with c axis along the nanocolumns axis, b axis parallel to the film interface, and 74.8 degrees monoclinic angle between a and c axes. The columnar thin film reveals anomalous optical dispersion, extreme birefringence, and strong dichroism and differs entirely from bulk chromium.

Background: We are enrolling patients with locally-advanced (LABC) or inflammatory breast cancer on a phase II trial of neoadjuvant sunitinib and metronomic chemotherapy. The addition of sunitinib is hypothesized to increase rate of pathologic complete response (pCR) via its effect on tumor vasculature. Measurement of FDG PET and MRI parameters of metabolism and blood flow (BF) after a one week run-in of sunitinib alone provides an opportunity to evaluate in vivo pharmacodynamics of sunitinib which may be predictive of response and provide insight into mechanism of sunitinib activity. Materials and Methods: Patients with HER2 negative LABC participated in an imaging trial with pre-therapy [18F]-FDG PET and DCE-MRI (T0) followed by a one-week run-in of sunitinib 37.5 mg orally daily with a second PET and MRI on day 7 (T1). FDG metabolic rate (MRFDG), transport (FDG K1) and MR indices of tumor perfusion (peak enhancement (PE), signal enhancement ratio (SER), and washout volume(WV)) were assessed. Results: Metabolism and perfusion parameters are available for the first 3 patients treated on this trial. All patients presented with grade 3, HER2 negative LABC. DCI-MRI (left) and PET images (right) pre-therapy (T0, top) and after one week sunitinib (T1, bottom) are illustrated in Figure 1. DCE-MRI studies show gray-scale images with color-coded regional perfusion (SER) superimposed; red indicates high levels of perfusion and blue lower levels. Three different responses were observed and expressed as percent change T0 to T1: patient 1 had no significant change in metabolism (MRFDG) or perfusion (K1,SER, PE); patient 2 showed a decline in perfusion with decreases in K1 (-55%), SER (-19%), PE (-10%), and WV (-56%), but minimal change in MRFDG (+ 5.9%); while patient 3 had marked declines in perfusion K1 (-41%), SER (-25%), WV (-78%) and MRFDG (-59%). Discussion: These early data demonstrate the ability to measure changes in tumor metabolism and blood flow by PET and MRI and illustrate heterogeneity in tumor response to sunitinib. As patients complete neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NC), metabolism and perfusion parameters from mid-therapy (T2) and end-therapy (T3) imaging will be evaluated in the context of pCR versus other with the goal of exploiting functional imaging parameters to predict response to NC and elucidate mechanism of response to sunitinib and metronomic chemotherapy. Abstract
In 2005, an outbreak of severe respiratory disease in a mixed poultry flock that was infected with Chlamydophila (C.) psittaci led to dissemination of the infection to at least 100 small poultry farms in 11 districts of Central Germany. At the same time, a total of 24 persons in contact with poultry from one of the flocks reported flu-like symptoms to their physician, thus suggesting zoonotic transmission. Within 3 weeks, seven individuals had to be hospitalized, with three of them requiring intensive care. Analysis of ompA sequences from chlamydial isolates and directly from clinical samples revealed the presence of both genotype A and E/B of C. psittaci at the source of the outbreak and in contact flocks. Genotype A was also detected in the three severely ill patients. The findings of the present study demonstrate the high zoonotic potential of avian chlamydiae. To ensure speedy eradication of psittacosis in poultry flocks and effective treatment of infected humans, fast, sensitive and species-specific detection of the causative agent is essential, as well as close collaboration between regional public health services, attending physicians and the diagnostic laboratories involved.
