Low-tube-voltage whole-body CT angiography with extremely low iodine dose: a comparison between hybrid-iterative reconstruction and deep-learning image-reconstruction algorithms. Clin Radiol 2024; 79:e791-e798. [PMID: 38403540 DOI: 10.1016/j.crad.2024.02.002] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/08/2023] [Revised: 01/29/2024] [Accepted: 02/07/2024] [Indexed: 02/27/2024]
Abstract
AIM To evaluate arterial enhancement, its depiction, and image quality in low-tube potential whole-body computed tomography (CT) angiography (CTA) with extremely low iodine dose and compare the results with those obtained by hybrid-iterative reconstruction (IR) and deep-learning image-reconstruction (DLIR) methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS This prospective study included 34 consecutive participants (27 men; mean age, 74.2 years) who underwent whole-body CTA at 80 kVp for evaluating aortic diseases between January and July 2020. Contrast material (240 mg iodine/ml) with simultaneous administration of its quarter volume of saline, which corresponded to 192 mg iodine/ml, was administered. CT raw data were reconstructed using adaptive statistical IR-Veo of 40% (hybrid-IR), DLIR with medium- (DLIR-M), and high-strength level (DLIR-H). A radiologist measured CT attenuation of the arteries and background noise, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was then calculated. Two reviewers qualitatively evaluated the arterial depictions and diagnostic acceptability on axial, multiplanar-reformatted (MPR), and volume-rendered (VR) images. RESULTS Mean contrast material volume and iodine weight administered were 64.1 ml and 15.4 g, respectively. The SNRs of the arteries were significantly higher in the following order of the DLIR-H, DLIR-M, and hybrid-IR (p<0.001). Depictions of six arteries on axial, three arteries on MPR, and four arteries on VR images were significantly superior in the DLIR-M or hybrid-IR than in the DLIR-H (p≤0.009 for each). Diagnostic acceptability was significantly better in the DLIR-M and DLIR-H than in the hybrid-IR (p<0.001-0.005). CONCLUSION DLIR-M showed well-balanced arterial depictions and image quality compared with the hybrid-IR and DLIR-H.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to assess the imaging features of atypical lipomatous tumors (ALTs) and lipoma with fat necrosis. METHODS This study included patients with histopathologically proven fat necrosis within adipocytic tumors who underwent preoperative imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or computer tomography (CT) findings of fat necrosis associated with lipomatous tumors were retrospectively reviewed, emphasizing the "fatty island sign (FIS)." FISs were defined as well-demarcated, focal fat-containing areas surrounded by more thickened septa compared with other intratumoral septa. Imaging findings of FIS were compared between ALT and lipoma. RESULTS Fat necrosis was histopathologically confirmed in 17 patients (6 ALTs and 11 lipomas). Among them, 18 FISs were observed in 10 lesions (59%). Multiple FISs within a lesion were observed in 4 (40%) patients. The median maximum diameter of the FISs was 37 mm. Hypointense areas within FISs relative to the subcutaneous fat on T1- and T2-weighted images were observed in 8 (80%) and 9 (90%), respectively, whereas hyperintense areas within FISs on fat-suppressed T2-weighted images were observed in 2 (20%). Nonfatty solid components within FISs were observed in 2 (20%). On CT, increased fat attenuation and pure fat attenuation within FISs were observed in 6 (86%) and 1 (14%), respectively. The imaging findings of FIS were not significantly different between ALT and lipoma. CONCLUSION FISs were observed in 59% of the histologically proven ALT and lipoma patients with fat necrosis. The hypointense areas relative to the subcutaneous fat on T1- and T2-weighted images and increased fat attenuation on CT were usually observed within FISs.

Abstract
AIM To compare the radiation dose, image quality, and conspicuity of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) in pancreatic protocol dual-energy computed tomography (CT) between two X-ray tubes mounted in the same CT machine. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study comprised 80 patients (median age, 73 years; 45 men) who underwent pancreatic protocol dual-energy CT from January 2019 to March 2022 using either old (Group A, n=41) or new (Group B, n=39) X-ray tubes mounted in the same CT machine. The imaging parameters were completely matched between the two groups, and CT data were reconstructed at 70 and 40 keV. The CT dose-index volume (CTDIvol); CT attenuation of the abdominal aorta, pancreas, and PDAC; background noise; and qualitative scores for the image noise, overall image quality, and PDAC conspicuity were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The CTDIvol was lower in Group B than Group A (7.9 versus 9.2 mGy; p<0.001). The CT attenuation of all anatomical structures at 70 and 40 keV was comparable between the two groups (p=0.06-0.78). The background noise was lower in Group B than Group A (12 versus 14 HU at 70 keV, p=0.046; and 26 versus 30 HU at 40 keV, p<0.001). Qualitative scores for image noise and overall image quality at 70 and 40 keV and PDAC conspicuity at 40 keV were higher in Group B than Group A (p<0.001-0.045). CONCLUSION The latest X-ray tube could reduce the radiation dose and improve image quality in pancreatic protocol dual-energy CT.

No evidence of carbon storage usage for seed production in 18 dipterocarp masting species in a tropical rain forest. Oecologia 2024; 204:717-726. Abstract
Most canopy species in lowland tropical rain forests in Southeast Asia, represented by Dipterocarpaceae, undergo mast reproduction synchronously at community level during a general flowering event. Such events occur at irregular intervals of 2-10 years. Some species do not necessarily participate in every synchronous mast reproduction, however. This may be due to a lack of carbohydrate resources in the trees for masting. We tested the hypothesis that interspecific differences in the time required to store assimilates in trees for seed production are due to the frequency of masting and/or seed size in each species. We examined the relationship between reproductive frequency and the carbon accumulation period necessary for seed production, and between the seed size and the period, using radiocarbon analysis in 18 dipterocarp canopy species. The mean carbon accumulation period was 0.84 years before seed maturation in all species studied. The carbon accumulation period did not have any significant correlation with reproductive frequency or seed size, both of which varied widely across the species studied. Our results show that for seed production, dipterocarp masting species do not use carbon assimilates stored for a period between the masting years, but instead use recent photosynthates produced primarily in a masting year, regardless of the masting interval or seed size of each species. These findings suggest that storage of carbohydrate resources is not a limiting factor in the masting of dipterocarps, and that accumulation and allocation of other resources is important as a precondition for participation in general flowering.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) An accurate and non-invasive assessment of tumor response following treatment is essential. Traditional anatomical imaging techniques are insufficient before a significant morphological change can be observed. Metabolic imaging of molecular processes in the living body is also used. In recent years, deuterium magnetic resonance spectroscopic (MRS) imaging has been demonstrated as an alternative for cancer metabolic imaging by high-field (4-11T) MRI using deuterium-labeled molecules as a contrast agent. The study aim was to evaluate the feasibility of using deuterium MRI 1.5T for tumor visualization and early assessment of the efficacy of three anticancer treatment strategies (radiation and anticancer drugs) in pancreatic cancer model mice given heavy water (D2O) to induce deuterium (2H)-tissue labeling. MATERIALS/METHODS A MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer model of six BALB/c-nu mice was prepared, and repeated deuterium MRI was performed during the first 10 days after starting free drinking of 30% D2O. We also evaluated 2H accumulation in the tumor after irradiation, bevacizumab administration, or gemcitabine administration of other 20 mice. Additional confirmatory proton MRI, ex vivo metabolic hyperpolarization 13C-MRS and histopathology were performed. RESULTS The mouse's whole-body distribution of 2H was visible 1 day after drinking, and the signal intensity increased daily. Although the tumor size did not change 1 and 3 days after irradiation, the amount of 2H in the tumor decreased significantly. The 2H image intensity of the tumor also significantly decreased after the administration of bevacizumab or gemcitabine. Metabolic hyperpolarization 13C-MRS, proton MRI and 2H-NMR spectroscopy confirmed the efficacy of the anticancer treatments. CONCLUSION Deuterium MRI at 1.5T proved feasibility to track 2H distribution throughout mouse tissues during D2O administration and revealed a higher 2H accumulation in the tumor xenografts. This research demonstrated a promising successful method for early assessment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy of pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate computed tomography (CT) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG-PET/CT) findings of invasive non-mucinous adenocarcinoma (INMA) of the lung as a predictor of histological tumour grade according to 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included consecutive patients with surgically resected INMA who underwent both preoperative CT and 18F-FDG-PET/CT. A three-tiered tumour grade was performed based on the fifth edition of the WHO classification of lung tumours. CT imaging features and the maximum standardised uptake value (SUVmax) were compared among the three tumour grades. RESULTS In total, 214 patients with INMA (median age 70 years; interquartile range 65-76 years; 123 men) were histologically categorised: 36 (17%) as grade 1, 102 (48%) as grade 2 and 76 (35%) as grade 3. Pure solid appearance was more frequent in grade 3 (83%) than in grades 1 (0%) and 2 (26%) (P < 0.001). The SUVmax of the entire tumour was higher in grade 3 than in grades 1 and 2 (P < 0.001). Multivariable analysis revealed that pure solid appearance (odds ratio = 94.0; P < 0.001), round/oval shape (odds ratio = 4.01; P = 0.001), spiculation (odds ratio = 2.13; P = 0.04), air bronchogram (odds ratio = 0.40; P = 0.03) and SUVmax (odds ratio = 1.45; P < 0.001) were significant predictors for grade 3 INMAs. CONCLUSION Pure solid appearance, round/oval shape, spiculation, absence of air bronchogram and high SUVmax were associated with grade 3 INMAs. CT and 18F-FDG-PET/CT were potentially useful non-invasive imaging methods to predict the histological grade of INMAs.

The New Quantum Image by Dynamic Nuclear Polarized MRI for the Assessment of Cardiac Radioablation to the Cavotricuspid Isthmus. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2023; 117:e193. Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Cardiac arrhythmias are usually treated with invasive, time consuming catheter ablation techniques. While recently stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is an emerging non-invasive treatment in the management of cardiac arrhythmias. To identify and assess the cardiac radioablation by MR examination, including diffusion-weighted MRI, dynamic Gd-enhanced MRI, MR spectroscopy, and T2-weighted MRI early after SBRT is very difficult. We have been developing the free radical imaging methods using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP)-MRI with nitroxyl radicals as a redox probe (e.g., 4-Methacryloyloxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (Tempo methacrylate; TempoMC)). In this study, we examined the possibility of in vivo spatiotemporal visualization of SBRT for cardiac radioablation to the cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) based on redox reaction by in vivo DNP-MRI. MATERIALS/METHODS All animal procedures were approved by institutional animal care and use committee and performed in full compliance with its guidelines. This study was conducted with two approaches. First, four mini pigs underwent electrophysiology assessment using electroanatomic mapping (EAM) before and 3 months after SBRT with single-fraction doses of 25 Gy. The target of CTI was defined by cardiologist. We defined the planning target volume (PTV): the internal margin (IM) + set up margin (SM) = SI 15 mm, AP 10mm, LR 10 mm were added to the target. Radiotherapy plans were created by the software used in daily clinical practice. Second, free radical imaging by low filed type of DNP-MRI was performed on the four mice before and after 25 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation to whole heart. ESR signal measurements were also performed. RESULTS A total dose of 25 Gy was successfully delivered to PTV in a single procedure in all mini pigs. EAM visualized the irradiated site and confirmed clockwise conduction block across the CTI. Although routine MRI could not detect the cardiac radiation injury clearly, the four mice of heart were well delineated on MRI and clearly visualized by DNP-MRI. DNP-MRI signal of TempoMC were decreased depending on prescribed irradiation dose. CONCLUSION These data demonstrated the safety and feasibility of SBRT for creating conduction block across the CTI in mini pigs. Although to identify and assess the irradiated site by routine MR examination was impossible, the free radical imaging methods using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP)-MRI with TempoMC could be a promising successful method for the assessment of cardiac radioablation. This new quantum image by DNP-MRI will open the possibility of treating cardiac arrhythmias by SBRT safety and noninvasively.

Abstract
Myrmecophytes have mutualistic relationships with symbiotic ants. Although myrmecophytic Macaranga (Malpighiales: Euphorbiaceae) species are well protected by aggressive Crematogaster (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) ants, some bug species occur on the myrmecophytes. To clarify the associations of these bugs with the plants and the ants, we studied the food habits of 3 bug species, Pilophorus lambirensis Nakatani et Komatsu, 2013 (Hemiptera: Miridae: Phylinae), Phylinae sp. 1, and Arbela sp. 1 (Hemiptera: Nabidae). We conducted field observations in a Bornean rainforest. First, we located these bugs and studied their behavioral responses to the ants on Macaranga species; we then conducted stable isotope analyses. All bugs avoided direct contact with ants, but they occurred only on trees with active ants. Pilophorus lambirensis and Phylinae sp. 1 were most commonly observed on the apical parts of host trees, whereas Arbela sp. 1 was mainly in areas distant from the apical parts where ants were sparse. The stable isotope ratios indicated that Phylinae sp. 1 fed on food bodies, which are nutrient-rich spherical bodies produced by Macaranga trees on the apical parts for ants. Although the main diet of the other 2 species remains unclear, nitrogen isotopic signatures demonstrated that P. lambirensis is herbivorous, whereas Arbela sp. 1 is carnivorous. However, the distant location from ants and its isotopic signatures indicated that Arbela sp. 1 rarely fed on the ants. At least 2 mirid bug species might obtain enemy-free space in addition to the food provided by the myrmecophytes.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the computed tomography (CT) attenuation values, background noise, arterial depiction, and image quality in whole-body dual-energy CT angiography (DECTA) at 40 keV with a reduced iodine dose using deep-learning image reconstruction (DLIR) and compare them with hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR). MATERIAL AND METHODS Whole-body DECTA with a reduced iodine dose (200 mg iodine/kg) was performed in 22 patients, and DECTA data at 1.25-mm section thickness with 50% overlap were reconstructed at 40 keV using 40% adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction with Veo (hybrid-IR group), and DLIR at medium and high levels (DLIR-M and DLIR-H groups). The CT attenuation values of the thoracic and abdominal aortas and iliac artery and background noise were measured. Arterial depiction and image quality on axial, multiplanar reformatted (MPR), and volume-rendered (VR) images were assessed by two readers. Quantitative and qualitative parameters were compared between the hybrid-IR, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H groups. RESULTS The vascular CT attenuation values were almost comparable between the three groups (p=0.013-0.97), but the background noise was significantly lower in the DLIR-H group than in the hybrid-IR and DLIR-M groups (p<0.001). The arterial depictions on axial and MPR images and in almost all arteries on VR images were comparable (p=0.14-1). The image quality of axial, MPR, and VR images was significantly better in the DLIR-H group (p<0.001-0.015). CONCLUSION DLIR significantly reduced background noise and improved image quality in DECTA at 40 keV compared with hybrid-IR, while maintaining the arterial depiction in almost all arteries.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the use of deep-learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithms in dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen, and to compare the image quality and lesion conspicuity among the reconstruction strength levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS This prospective study included 59 patients with 373 hepatic lesions who underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen. All images were reconstructed using four reconstruction algorithms, including 40% adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-Veo (ASiR-V) and DLIR at low, medium, and high-strength levels (DLIR-L, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H, respectively). The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the abdominal aorta, portal vein, liver, pancreas, and spleen and the lesion-to-liver contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated and compared among the four reconstruction algorithms. The diagnostic acceptability was qualitatively assessed and compared among the four reconstruction algorithms and the conspicuity of hepatic lesions was compared between <5 and ≥5 mm lesions. RESULTS The SNR of each anatomical structure (p<0.0001) and CNR (p<0.0001) were significantly higher in DLIR-H than the other reconstruction algorithms. Diagnostic acceptability was significantly better in DLIR-M than the other reconstruction algorithms (p<0.0001). The conspicuity of hepatic lesions was highest when using 40% ASiR-V and tended to lessen as the reconstruction strength level was getting higher in DLIR, especially in <5 mm lesions; however, all hepatic lesions could be detected. CONCLUSIONS DLIR improved the SNR, CNR, and image quality compared with 40% ASiR-V, while making it possible to decrease lesion conspicuity using higher reconstruction strength.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Community in Roots and Nitrogen Uptake Patterns of Understory Trees Beneath Ectomycorrhizal and Non-ectomycorrhizal Overstory Trees. FRONTIERS IN PLANT SCIENCE 2021; 11:583585. Abstract
Nitrogen (N) is an essential plant nutrient, and plants can take up N from several sources, including via mycorrhizal fungal associations. The N uptake patterns of understory plants may vary beneath different types of overstory trees, especially through the difference in their type of mycorrhizal association (arbuscular mycorrhizal, AM; or ectomycorrhizal, ECM), because soil mycorrhizal community and N availability differ beneath AM (non-ECM) and ECM overstory trees (e.g., relatively low nitrate content beneath ECM overstory trees). To test this hypothesis, we examined six co-existing AM-symbiotic understory tree species common beneath both AM-symbiotic black locust (non-ECM) and ECM-symbiotic oak trees of dryland forests in China. We measured AM fungal community composition of roots and natural abundance stable isotopic composition of N (δ15N) in plant leaves, roots, and soils. The root mycorrhizal community composition of understory trees did not significantly differ between beneath non-ECM and ECM overstory trees, although some OTUs more frequently appeared beneath non-ECM trees. Understory trees beneath non-ECM overstory trees had similar δ15N values in leaves and soil nitrate, suggesting that they took up most of their nitrogen as nitrate. Beneath ECM overstory trees, understory trees had consistently lower leaf than root δ15N, suggesting they depended on mycorrhizal fungi for N acquisition since mycorrhizal fungi transfer isotopically light N to host plants. Additionally, leaf N concentrations in the understory trees were lower beneath ECM than the non-ECM overstory trees. Our results show that, without large differences in root mycorrhizal community, the N uptake patterns of understory trees vary between beneath different overstory trees.

Abstract
Accurate morphological ant mimicry by Myrmarachne jumping spiders confers strong protective benefits against predators. However, it has been hypothesized that the slender and constricted ant-like appearance imposes costs on the hunting ability because their jumping power to capture prey is obtained from hydraulic pressure in their bodies. This hypothesis remains to be sufficiently investigated. We compared the jumping and prey-capture abilities of seven Myrmarachne species and non-myrmecomorphic salticids collected from tropical forests in Malaysian Borneo and northeastern Thailand. We found that the mimics had significantly reduced abilities compared with the non-mimics. The analysis using geometric morphometric techniques revealed that the reduced abilities were strongly associated with the morphological traits for ant mimicry and relatively lower abilities were found in Myrmarachne species with a more narrowed form. These results support the hypothesis that the jumping ability to capture prey is constrained by the morphological mimicry and provide a new insight into understanding the evolutionary costs of accurate mimicry.

Abstract
Invasions are ecologically destructive and can threaten biodiversity. Trophic flexibility has been proposed as a mechanism facilitating invasion, with more flexible species better able to invade. The termite hunting needle ant Brachyponera chinensis was introduced from East Asia to the United States where it disrupts native ecosystems. We show that B. chinensis has expanded dietary breadth without shifting trophic position in its introduced range. Transect sampling of ants and termites revealed a negative correlation between the abundance of B. chinensis and the abundance of other ants in introduced populations, but this pattern was not as strong in the native range. Both termite and B. chinensis abundance were higher in the introduced range than in native range. Radiocarbon (14C) analysis revealed that B. chinensis has significantly younger 'diet age', the time lag between carbon fixation by photosynthesis and its use by the consumer, in the introduced range than in the native range, while stable isotope analyses showed no change. These results suggest that in the introduced range B. chinensis remains a termite predator but also feeds on other consumer invertebrates with younger diet ages such as herbivorous insects. Radiocarbon analysis allowed us to elucidate cryptic dietary change associated with invasion success.

Abstract
Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies were carried out for 14N-labeled deuterated 3-methoxy-carbonyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidine-1-oxyl (MC-PROXYL) and 3-carboxy-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-pyrrolidin-1-oxyl (carboxy-PROXYL) in pure water and various concentrations of liposomal solutions by using 300 MHz ESR spectrometer. The ESR parameters such as the line width, hyperfine coupling constant, rotational correlation time, g-factor, partition parameter and permeability were reported for the samples. The line width broadening was observed for MC-PROXYL and carboxy-PROXYL in liposomal solution. The hyperfine coupling constant was observed for both nitroxyl spin probes. The permeable and impermeable nature of nitroxyl spin probes was demonstrated. The rotational correlation time increases with increasing concentration of liposome. The partition parameter increases with increasing concentration of liposome for MC-PROXYL, which indicates that the nitroxyl spin probes diffuse into lipid membrane. The permeability value decreases with increasing concentration of liposome, which reveals an increase in membrane permeability. The peaks corresponding to the lipid phase were observed for MC-PROXYL in liposomal solution, but not resolved for carboxy-PROXYL. These results confirm the permeable and impermeable nature of nitroxyl spin probes.

Abstract
Pycnotarsobrentus inuiae Maruyama & Bartolozzi, gen. nov. and sp. nov. (Brentinae: Eremoxenini) is described from the Lambir Hills National Park, Borneo (Sarawak, Malaysia) based on specimens collected from Crematogaster difformis F. Smith, 1857 ant nests in the myrmecophytic epiphytic ferns Platycerium crustacea Copel. and Lecanopteris ridleyi H. Christ. A second species of Pycnotarsobrentus is known from Malaysia but is represented by only one female and consequently not yet described pending discovery of a male. Pycnotarsobrentus belongs to the tribe Eremoxenini and shares some character states with the African genus Pericordus Kolbe, 1883. No species of Eremoxenini with similar morphological modifications are known from the Oriental region.

Dysregulation of autoimmunity caused by silica exposure and alteration of Fas-mediated apoptosis in T lymphocytes derived from silicosis patients. Int J Immunopathol Pharmacol 2011; 24:11S-16S. Abstract
Silicosis patients suffer from pulmonary fibrosis caused by silica inhalation, as well as autoimmune diseases known as the adjuvant effects of silica. Caplan syndrome complicated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is well known epidemiologically, and the incidence of complicated systemic sclerosis (SSc), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-related nephritis have been reported frequently in silicosis patients. To explore the detailed mechanisms of silica-induced dysregulation of autoimmunity, we had focused on Fas/CD95 and Fas-mediated apoptosis because Fas is one of the most important molecules regarding apoptosis of lymphocytes and its alteration makes some T cells survive longer. Additionally, if the long-survived T cells include the self-recognizing T-cell clones, it is easily thought that autoimmune diseases will appear in this situation. Furthermore, regulatory T cells (Treg) showing CD4+25+ and forkhead box P3 (FoxP3)-positive have been a central player in regulating activation of self- and foreign-antigen recognizing T cells, and it has been reported that activation of Treg causes its higher expression of Fas/CD95. Thus, in this review, we introduce the alteration of Fas and related molecules as found in silicosis and also present the Treg function of the CD4+25+ fraction in peripheral blood mononuclear cells derived from silicosis patients.

Effect of ecosystem retrogression on stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes of plants, soils and consumer organisms in boreal forest islands. RAPID COMMUNICATIONS IN MASS SPECTROMETRY : RCM 2009; 23:1892-1898. Abstract
In the prolonged absence of catastrophic disturbance, ecosystem retrogression occurs, and this involves increased nutrient limitation, and reduced aboveground and belowground ecosystem processes rates. Little is known about how the nitrogen and carbon stable isotope ratios (delta(15)N and delta(13)C) of plants, soils and consumer organisms respond to retrogression in boreal forests. We investigated a 5000 year chronosequence of forested islands in the boreal zone of northern Sweden, for which the time since lightning-induced wildfire increases with decreasing island size, leading to ecosystem retrogression. For this system, tissue delta(15)N of three abundant plant species (Betula pubescens, Vaccinium myrtillus and Pleurozium schreberi) and humus all increased as retrogression proceeded. This is probably due to enhanced ecosystem inputs of N by biological fixation, and greater dependency of the plants on organic N during retrogression. The delta(13)C of B. pubescens and plant-derived humus also increased during retrogression, probably through nutrient limitation increasing plant physiological stress. Unlike the plants, delta(15)N of invertebrates (lycosid spiders and ants) did not increase during retrogression, probably because of their partial dependence on aquatic-derived prey that had a variable delta(15)N signature. The delta(13)C of the invertebrates increased as retrogression proceeded and converged towards that of an aquatic prey source (chironomid flies), suggesting increased dependence on aquatic-derived prey during retrogression. These results show that measurement of delta(15)N and delta(13)C of plants, soils, and consumers across the same environmental gradient can provide insights into environmental factors that drive both the aboveground and belowground subsystems, as well as the linkages between them.

Use of stable nitrogen isotope signatures of riparian macrophytes as an indicator of anthropogenic N inputs to river ecosystems. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 2008; 42:7837-7841. Abstract
Deterioration of aquatic ecosystems resulting from enhanced anthropogenic N loading has become an issue of increasing concern worldwide, and methods are needed to trace sources of N in rivers. Because nitrate from sewage is enriched in 15N relative to nitrate from natural soils, delta(15)N values of stream nitrate (delta(15)Nnitrate) should be an appropriate index of anthropogenic N loading to rivers, as should the delta(15)N values of riparian plants (delta(15)Nplant) because they are consumers of nitrate. We determined the delta(15)N values of stream nitrate and six species of riparian macrophytes in 31 rivers in the Lake Biwa Basin in Japan. We then tested the correlation between these values and various land-use parameters, including the percentage of land used for residential and agricultural purposes as well as for natural areas. These delta(15)N values were significantly positively correlated with land use (%) that had a high N load (i.e., residential or agricultural use) and significantly negatively correlated with forest (%). These findings indicate that delta(15)N values of stream nitrate and riparian plants might be good indicators of anthropogenic inputs of nitrogen.

Changes in stable isotopes, lignin-derived phenols, and fossil pigments in sediments of Lake Biwa, Japan: implications for anthropogenic effects over the last 100 years. Abstract
We measured stable nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) isotope ratios, lignin-derived phenols, and fossil pigments in sediments of known ages to elucidate the historical changes in the ecosystem status of Lake Biwa, Japan, over the last 100 years. Stable N isotope ratios and algal pigments in the sediments increased rapidly from the early 1960s to the 1980s, and then remained relatively constant, indicating that eutrophication occurred in the early 1960s but ceased in the 1980s. Stable C isotope ratios of the sediment increased from the 1960s, but decreased after the 1980s to the present. This decrease in stable C isotope ratios after the 1980s could not be explained by annual changes in either terrestrial input or algal production. However, when the C isotope ratios were corrected for the Suess effect, the shift to more negative isotopic value in atmospheric CO(2) by fossil fuel burning, the isotopic value showed a trend, which is consistent with the other biomarkers and the monitoring data. The trend was also mirrored by the relative abundance of lignin-derived phenols, a unique organic tracer of material that originated from terrestrial plants, which decreased in the early 1960s and recovered to some degree in the 1980s. We detected no notable difference in the composition of lignin phenols, suggesting that the terrestrial plant composition did not change markedly. However, we found that lignin accumulation rate increased around the 1980s. These results suggest that although eutrophication has stabilized since the 1980s, allochthonous organic matter input has changed in Lake Biwa over the past 25 years.

Abstract
Time-domain (TD) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) imaging at 300MHz for in vivo applications requires resonators with recovery times less than 1 micros after pulsed excitation to reliably capture the rapidly decaying free induction decay (FID). In this study, we tested the suitability of the Litz foil coil resonator (LCR), commonly used in MRI, for in vivo EPR/EPRI applications in the TD mode and compared with parallel coil resonator (PCR). In TD mode, the sensitivity of LCR was lower than that of the PCR. However, in continuous wave (CW) mode, the LCR showed better sensitivity. The RF homogeneity was similar in both the resonators. The axis of the RF magnetic field is transverse to the cylindrical axis of the LCR, making the resonator and the magnet co-axial. Therefore, the loading of animals, and placing of the anesthesia nose cone and temperature monitors was more convenient in the LCR compared to the PCR whose axis is perpendicular to the magnet axis.

Effect of agriculture on water quality of Lake Biwa tributaries, Japan. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2008; 389:132-148. Abstract
We investigated the effects of natural environments and human activity on Lake Biwa, central Japan. We determined the concentrations of 19 elements and the compositions of stable S and Sr isotopes in the main tributaries of the lake and compared them with the corresponding values obtained from the lake water during the circulation period. Results of a principal component analysis indicated that the components dissolved in the lower reaches of the tributaries can be divided into group 1 (HCO(3), SO(4), NO(3), Ca, Mg, Sr) and group 2 components (Cl, Br, Na, K, Ba, Rb, Cs). The concentrations of group 1 components were high in the rivers of the southern area, which is urbanized and densely populated, and the eastern area, which consists of plains where agriculture predominates, compared with the rivers of the northern and western areas, which are mostly mountainous and sparsely populated. The concentrations of group 2 components tended to be high in the river water of industrial areas. The delta(34)S values of SO(4) in the river water converged to 0+/-2 per thousand as the SO(4) concentration increased and, excluding the areas where limestone is extensively distributed, as the HCO(3) concentration increased. In particular, both the delta(34)S values (0+/-2 per thousand) and the (87)Sr/(86)Sr ratios (0.7117+/-0.0005) fell within narrow ranges in the small and medium rivers of the eastern plain area, where rice is widely grown. These values agreed respectively with the delta(34)S values of the fertilizers used in the Lake Biwa basin and the soil-exchangeable (87)Sr/(86)Sr in the eastern plain. The characteristics of water quality in the small and medium rivers of the eastern area can be explained by a model in which sulfuric, nitric, and bicarbonic acids generated by the decomposition of agricultural fertilizer and paddy rice selectively leached out alkaline-earth elements adsorbed on the soil and sediments of the plain or dissolved calcium carbonate enriched with Mg and Sr. Compared with tributary waters, the lake water was depleted in NO(3), owing to denitrification, and in Mn, owing to mineralization, which occur under the redox condition of bottom sediments. Excluding NO(3) and Mn, the compositions of both the dissolved elements and the Sr and S isotopes in the water of Lake Biwa can be approximately reproduced by simple mixing of the tributary water, indicating that these components provide effective indices for evaluating the relationship between the waters of the lake and its tributaries.

Abstract
The evolution of fungus-growing termites is supposed to have started in the African rain forests with multiple invasions of semi-arid habitats as well as multiple invasions of the Oriental region. We used sequences of the mitochondrial COII gene and Bayesian dating to investigate the time frame of the evolution of Macrotermes, an important genus of fungus-growing termites. We found that the genus Macrotermes consists of at least 6 distantly related clades. Furthermore, the COII sequences suggested some cryptic diversity within the analysed African Macrotermes species. The dates calculated with the COII data using a fossilized termite mound to calibrate the clock were in good agreement with dates calculated with COI sequences using the split between Locusta and Chortippus as calibration point which supports the consistency of the calibration points. The clades from the Oriental region dated back to the early Tertiary. These estimates of divergence times suggested that Macrotermes invaded Asia during periods with humid climates. For Africa, many speciation events predated the Pleistocene and fall in range of 6-23 million years ago. These estimates suggest that savannah-adapted African clades radiated with the spread of the semi-arid ecosystems during the Miocene. Apparently, events during the Pleistocene were of little importance for speciation within the genus Macrotermes. However, further investigations are necessary to increase the number of taxa for phylogenetic analysis.

Effect of forest use on trophic levels of small mammals: an analysis using stable isotopes. CAN J ZOOL 2007. Abstract
The degradation of tropical forests is progressing rapidly and its ecological effects on wild animals are a global concern. We evaluated the hypothesis that small mammals in highly degraded forest occupy higher trophic levels than those in somewhat degraded forests, as indicated by diets high in consumers such as insects, in a tropical rain forest in Sarawak, Malaysia. After correcting for differences in the δ15N values for primary production among the study sites, the δ15Ncorrected values for rats and mice (Muridae) differed significantly among forest types. Rats and mice in more degraded forest had higher δ15Ncorrected values than those in less degraded or primary forest; in contrast, treeshrews (Tupaiidae) and squirrels (Sciuridae) showed no significant differences in the δ15Ncorrected values among forest types. We found significant positive correlations between canopy openness and the δ15Ncorrected values for one species of squirrel and two species of rats. This hypothesis was supported for small mammals that have normal dietary preferences for plants, i.e., omnivorous rodents, but not for those that normally prefer insects, i.e., treeshrews. The δ15N values for omnivorous mammals may be useful as an indicator of changes in food-web structure in response to forest disturbance.

Sulfur and strontium isotope geochemistry of tributary rivers of Lake Biwa: implications for human impact on the decadal change of lake water quality. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2005; 345:1-12. Abstract
To study the deterioration of the water quality in Lake Biwa, Japan, over the last 40 years, we measured the concentrations and isotopic ratios of sulfur and strontium of water in 41 inflowing rivers and one discharging river. The concentrations of SO4 and Sr of inflowing rivers at downstream sites were generally high in the southern urban area and in the eastern area, where a large agricultural plain is situated, but low in the northern and western areas, whose watersheds are mountainous and with low population density. SO4 and Sr concentrations are also lower at upstream sites, which are closer to mountainous areas. Thus, the inflowing river receives large amounts of SO4 and Sr as it flows across the plain, where human activity levels are high. The delta34S or 87Sr/86Sr values of most eastern rivers at downstream sites are lower than those of water in Lake Biwa, and values become more uniform as the proportion of the plain area in the watershed increases. River water in other areas has higher values of delta34S or 87Sr/86Sr than the lake water. This result indicates that the decadal decrease of delta34S and 87Sr/86Sr in the lake water has been caused mainly by the increased flux of SO4 and Sr from rivers in the eastern plain. We assume that in the plain, sulfur, nitrogen, and organic compounds induced by human activities generate sulfuric, nitric, and organic acids in the water, which accelerate the extraction of Sr from bedrocks, leading to the generation of Sr in the river water in the area.
