Removal of lead from contaminated water bodies using sea nodule as an adsorbent

Adsorption of water soluble lead on polymetallic sea nodule has been studied in detail. Complete decontamination of lead is possible by appropriate sea nodule dosing. Adsorption is also dependent on pH and best adsorption is achieved at pH 6. Beyond pH 6, the desorption of lead from sea nodule surface is practically zero. Residual metal concentrations in the filtrate after adsorption is negligible. Both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms may reasonably explain adsorption of lead on sea nodule. Chemically bound moisture plays a very crucial role in lead adsorption. Lead adsorptive capability of sea nodule is practically destroyed when calcined at a temperature of 900 degrees C. Lead loading capacity of sea nodule has been estimated at 440 mg of lead per gram of sea nodule. The performance of sea nodule as a lead adsorbent has been successfully tested over six simulated lead contaminated water systems. Lead loading capacity of sea nodule compares favorably with other adsorbents like activated carbon, ion exchange resin, anionic clay, granulated blast furnace slag and natural and treated zeolites.

Bio-accumulation of heavy metals in different organs of some of the common edible fishes of Kharkai River, Jamshedpur

Gill, liver, kidney, intestine and muscle of some of the common edible fishes captured from Kharkai river were analysed for their iron, zinc, nickel, lead, copper, manganese, chromium and cobalt contents. Kharkai river is one of the principal tributaries of river Subarnarekha and is considered as one of the most polluted rivers in the Chotanagpur plateau. The data generated underline the extent of this pollution and call for immediate redressal.

Removal of arsenic from groundwater using low cost ferruginous manganese ore

A low cost ferruginous manganese ore (FMO) has been studied for the removal of arsenic from groundwater. The major mineral phases present in the FMO are pyrolusite and goethite. The studied FMO can adsorb both AS(III) and As(V) without any pre-treatment, adsorption of As(III) being stronger than that of As(V). Both As(II) and As(V) are adsorbed by the FMO in the pH range of 2-8. Once adsorbed, arsenic does not get desorbed even on varying the pH in the range of 2-8. Presence of bivalent cations, namely, Ni2+, Co2+ Mg2+ enhances the adsorption capability of the FMO. The FMO has been successfully used for the removal of arsenic from six real groundwater samples containing arsenic in the range of 0.04-0.18 ppm. Arsenic removals are almost 100% in all the cases. The cost of the FMO is about 50-56 US$ per metric tonne.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae genes required in the absence of the CIN8-encoded spindle motor act in functionally diverse mitotic pathways

Kinesin-related Cin8p is the most important spindle-pole-separating motor in Saccharomyces cerevisiae but is not essential for cell viability. We identified 20 genes whose products are specifically required by cell deficient for Cin8p. All are associated with mitotic roles and represent at least four different functional pathways. These include genes whose products act in two spindle motor pathways that overlap in function with Cin8p, the kinesin-related Kip1p pathway and the cytoplasmic dynein pathway. In addition, genes required for mitotic spindle checkpoint function and for normal microtubule stability were recovered. Mutant alleles of eight genes caused phenotypes similar to dyn1 (encodes the dynein heavy chain), including a spindle-positioning defect. We provide evidence that the products of these genes function in concept with dynein. Among the dynein pathway gene products, we found homologues of the cytoplasmic dynein intermediate chain, the p150Glued subunit of the dynactin complex, and human LIS-1, required for normal brain development. These findings illustrate the complex cellular interactions exhibited by Cin8p, a member of a conserved spindle motor family.

International migration and welfare in the source country

Cadmium resistance in some members of Enterobacteriaceae

Strains of members of Enterobacteriaceae, namely Escherichia coli (18), Klebsiella aerogenes (16), and Serratia marcescens (16) were screened for Cd resistance or sensitivity. Only one strain each of these was resistant to high levels (25 n moles/0.05 ml) CdCl2. The Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of sensitive strains ranged from 0.8-5 micrograms/ml. All the resistant strains were simultaneously resistant to a number of antibiotics. Treatment with sodium dodecyl sulfate eliminated resistance to Cd and to some antibiotics.

Elimination of mercury, cadmium and antibiotic resistance from Acinetobacter lwoffi and Micrococcus sp. at high temperature

Resistance determinants for HgCl2 and CdCl2 were eliminated along with a number of antibiotic resistance factors from Acinetobacter lwoffi and Micrococcus sp. at 44 degrees C. These organisms were orginally resistant to HgCl2, merbromin, CdCl2, Pb(NO3)2, benzylpenicillin, erythromycin, carbenicillin, tetracycline and sulfadiazine. Four different types of mutants from A. lwoffi (type I to IV) and one type of mutant from Micrococcus sp. (type V) were obtained, depending on the loss of particular resistance factors for HgCl2, merbromin, CdCl2 and antibiotics. In general, frequency of elimination of all the missing markers was very low (in the range of 10(-3) per bacterium). However, the missing determinants did not revert spontaneously.
