Effects of a beaver dam on the benthic copepod assemblage of a Mediterranean river

As known "ecosystem engineers", beavers influence river hydrology, geomorphology, biochemistry, and biological assemblages. However, there is a lack of research regarding the effects of beaver activities on freshwater meiofauna. In this study, we investigated the taxonomic and functional composition of the benthic copepod assemblage of a segment of the Tiber River (Italy) where a beaver dam, created about 7 weeks before our survey, had formed a semi-lentic habitat upstream and a lotic habitat downstream of the dam. We also analyzed the copepod assemblage before and after a flood event that destroyed the beaver dam, providing a unique opportunity to observe changes in a naturally reversing scenario. Our analyses revealed that, while the taxonomic composition and functional traits of the copepod assemblage remained largely unchanged across the recently formed semi-lentic and lotic habitats, substantial differences were evident between the dammed and undammed states. The dammed state showed lower copepod abundances, biomass, and functionality than the undammed one. These results highlight the role of beaver dams in changing the composition and functionality of meiofaunal assemblages offering insights into the dynamic interactions within aquatic ecosystems.

Polyphenol-Enriched Pectin from Pomegranate Peel: Multi-Objective Optimization of the Eco-Friendly Extraction Process

A multi-objective optimization was performed using response surface methodology to obtain a high-value-added product, pectin enriched in polyphenols, from pomegranate peel. For this purpose, a green extraction technique that combines citric acid and ultrasound was carried out considering three variables: time, pH, and temperature. The extraction procedure was optimized using the Box-Behnken design, these being the most suitable conditions, with an extraction time of 34.16 min, a pH of 2.2, and a temperature of 89.87 °C. At this point, the pectin yield was 31.89%, with a total retained polyphenol content of 15.84 mg GAE/g pectin. In addition, the water activity, ash content, equivalent weight, methoxyl content, and degree of esterification were determined for the pectin obtained at the optimal point. This study demonstrates that polyphenol-enriched pectin can be obtained from pomegranate peel via an eco-friendly and efficient method, and that it presents similar properties to commercial pectin, preserving its quality and with potential use as an ingredient or food supplement with a high nutritional value. This work contributes to developing sustainable strategies to valorize pomegranate agro-industrial waste and produce high-value functional ingredients.

Drying and rehydration kinetics of peeled and unpeeled green apple slices (Granny Smith cv)

In this work, the kinetics of drying and rehydration of green apple slices peeled and unpeeled (Granny Smith cv) were studied. The apple slices were dried at 50, 60, and 70 °C, and after that, rehydrated at ambient (T_a) and boiling temperature (T_b). The drying kinetics were adjusted with the Dincer and Dost model, giving a good fit. Effective diffusivity (D_eff) and the convective mass transfer coefficient (h_m) were also determined, both coefficients increase with drying temperature, being 1.25 × 10^-9 m² s^-1 and 9.53 × 10^-7 m² s^-1 the highest values obtained for the peeled apple slices respectively. Peleg and Weibull models were adjusted to the rehydration experimental data obtaining a good fit (R² > 0.99). D_eff values increase significantly with rehydration temperature but take similar values between peeled and unpeeled samples. Acidity, pH, moisture content, solid soluble content, and equivalent diameter were determined to compare the fresh apple slices with those after dehydration and the post-rehydration process. The apple slices rehydrated at boiling temperature better preserved the characteristics of fresh samples due to the short immersion times in water, no significant differences were observed between peeled and unpeeled apples. According to the results, it is convenient to dry the apple slices unpeeled at 70 °C and rehydrate them at T_b.

Effects of the amendment with almond shell, bio-waste and almond shell-based biochar on the quality of saline-alkali soils

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the amendment with almond shell bio-waste (AS) and almond shell-based biochar (ASB), in different mass ratios (5, 10, and 15%), on the physicochemical properties of three different saline soils, using the growth of arugula seedlings as a bioindicator of the enhancement achieved. Data were analyzed based on a completely randomized design in a factorial arrangement with four replications. The results showed that the low-salinity soil (T1) presented the best physicochemical characteristics and growth parameters. The addition of AS and ASB in low proportions to the saline soils reduced the pH and electrical conductivity values. An increase in the amendment proportion led to an increase in these variables. Moisture, organic matter, and organic carbon increased, and the cation exchange capacity decreased, generating positive effects on soil quality. The values of exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) showed that T3 presented the highest sodicity, followed by T2 and T1. The treatment with 5% ASB produced better results regarding total plant length, fresh and dry weights, leaf area, and leaf chlorophyll content. Finally, linear regression models were applied to describe the dependence of the agronomic variables on the ratio of biochar added.

The conversion of linoleic acid into hydroxytetrahydrofuran-structured bio-lubricant

In this work, a new structured linoleic-based hydroxytetrahydrofuran (HTHF) ester lubricant with excellent properties was developed. A synthesis route through regioselective enzymatic hydration was established, combining highly selective epoxidation with an intramolecular epoxide ring-opening reaction. The results proved that the enzymatic-chemical method is an alternative strategy for the conversion of linoleic acid into bio-lubricants. LiBr was revealed as an efficient catalyst (yields of 95.8%, and selectivity of 98.5%, respectively) for the intramolecular epoxide ring-opening reaction. The tribological properties test indicated that the HTHF bio-lubricants exhibited better performance than the commercial mineral oils. Physicochemical investigation further indicated that the product has a good thermal stability, with the T_onset around 300 °C. The kinematic viscosity and viscosity index indicated that the product is suitable to be applied for lubrication. In contrast with previous findings, this HTHF-structured bio-lubricant oil exhibited a superior low pour point (-64 °C) and provided great potential to be utilized in extreme cold working environments.

Elevated ectodomain of type 23 collagen is a novel biomarker of the intestinal epithelium to monitor disease activity in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease

BACKGROUND

Impaired intestinal epithelial barrier is highly affected in inflammatory bowel disease. Transmembrane collagens connecting the epithelial cells to the extracellular matrix have an important role in epithelial cell homeostasis. Thus, we sought to determine whether the transmembrane type 23 collagen could serve as a surrogate marker for disease activity in patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

METHODS

We developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect the ectodomain of type 23 collagen (PRO-C23) in serum, followed by evaluation of its levels in both acute and chronic dextran sulphate sodium colitis models in rats and human inflammatory bowel disease cohorts. Serum from 44 Crohn's disease and 29 ulcerative colitis patients with active and inactive disease was included.

RESULTS

In the acute and chronic dextran sulphate sodium-induced rat colitis model, the PRO-C23 serum levels were significantly increased after colitis and returned to normal levels after disease remission. Serum levels of PRO-C23 were elevated in Crohn's disease (p < 0.05) and ulcerative colitis (p < 0.001) patients with active disease compared to healthy donors. PRO-C23 differentiated healthy donors from ulcerative colitis (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.81, p = 0.0009) and Crohn's disease (AUC: 0.70, p = 0.0124). PRO-C23 differentiated ulcerative colitis patients with active disease from those in remission (AUC: 0.75, p = 0.0219) and Crohn's disease patients with active disease from those in remission (AUC: 0.68, p = 0.05).

CONCLUSION

PRO-C23 was elevated in rats with active colitis, and inflammatory bowel disease patients with active disease. Therefore, PRO-C23 may be used as a surrogate marker for monitoring disease activity in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Producing non-traditional flour from watermelon rind pomace: Artificial neural network (ANN) modeling of the drying process

An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to simulate the convective drying process of watermelon rind pomace used in the fabrication of non-traditional flour. Also, the drying curves obtained experimentally were fitted with eleven different empirical models to compare both modeling approaches. Lastly, to reduce the required fossil fuel in the convective drying process, two types of solar air heaters (SAH) were presented and experimentally evaluated. The optimization of the ANN by a genetic algorithm (GA) resulted in an optimal number of neurons of nine (9) for the first hidden layer and ten (10) for the second hidden layer. Also, the ANN performed better than the best fitted empirical model. Simulations with the trained ANN showed very promising generalization capabilities. The type II SAH showed the best performance and the highest air temperature it reached was 45 °C. The specific energy consumption (SEC) needed to dry the watermelon rind at this temperature and the CO₂ emissions were 609 kWh.kg^-1 and 318 kg CO₂.kWh^-1, respectively. Using the type II SAH, this energy amount would be saved without CO₂ emissions. To reach higher drying temperatures the combination of the SAH and the electrical convective dryer is possible.

A new detector for the beam energy measurement in proton therapy: a feasibility study

The proof of concept of a new device, capable of determining in a few seconds the energy of clinical proton beams by measuring the time of flight (ToF) of protons, is presented. The prototype consists of two thin ultra fast silicon detector (UFSD) pads, aligned along the beam direction in a telescope configuration and readout by a digitizer. The method developed for extracting the energy at the isocenter from the measured ToF, validated by Monte Carlo simulations, and the procedure used to calibrate the system are also presented and discussed in detail. The prototype was tested at the Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO, Pavia, Italy), at several beam energies, covering the entire clinical range, and using different distances between the sensors. The measured beam energies were benchmarked against the nominal CNAO energy values, obtained during the commissioning of the centre from the measured ranges in water. Deviations of few hundreds of keV have been achieved for all considered proton beam energies for distances between the two sensors larger than 60 cm, indicating a sensitivity to the corresponding beam range in water smaller than the clinical tolerance of 1 mm. Moreover, few seconds of irradiation were necessary to collect the required statistics. These preliminary results indicate that a telescope of UFSDs could achieve in a short time the accuracy required for the clinical application and therefore encourage further investigations towards the improvement and the optimization of the present prototype.

Cleaner and sustainable processes for extracting phenolic compounds from bio-waste

The frequent environment-unfriendly treatments of agro-industrial bio-wastes cause severe pollution through air pollution and through residual effluents and hazardous solid waste. These bio-wastes can contain phenolic compounds, forms of phenolic acids and flavonoids in plants. They are however the most abundant class of many phytochemicals and have been given great interest due to their health advantage and high economic value. An interesting upgrading of these bio-wastes may consist in obtaining a concentrated extract of phenolic compounds using no-toxic solvents, hence protecting the environment and human health. In this work, different alternatives of the extraction process were evaluated using an exergetic analysis. The energy and water consumptions, CO₂ emissions, exergetic yield, wasted and destroyed exergy were calculated. It was found that several alternatives for recycle streams were convenient (streams with higher chemical exergy were not discharged into the environment). The energy and water consumption for the best alternative (ethanol-water ratio 1/1 including recycle stream, named E-W 1/1 Rec) were 567 MJ/h and 105 kg/h, respectively and the CO₂ emission was 105 kg/h. The calculated exergy destruction indicated that the evaporation and distillation stages may be optimized towards a more sustainable operation. It is not advisable to dry the bio-waste if it will be immediately processed once generated.

Minimization of the adverse environmental effects of discarded onions by avoiding disposal through dehydration and food-use

Onion is a commonly used vegetable in the Cuyo Region, Argentina, and important in the world global vegetable production ranking. Production levels often exceed immediate markets of fresh sale, and excesses, although still edible, are currently discarded (mostly incinerated and disposed in landfill, creating numerous environmental hazards). To minimize these adverse environmental problems, this research investigates upgrading the discarded products by dehydration, hence guaranteeing their ultimate food-use. The dehydration process of discarded onion cv. Crioula Roxa was hence studied at 60 and 70 °C, temperatures selected to maintain the main physicochemical characteristics of the onions, while also creating optimum heat and mass transfer coefficients while significantly reducing the energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. When using an electrically-heated convective dryer, the Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) values and the CO₂ emissions during dehydration at 70 °C are 738.89 kWh.kg^-1 and 264.74 kg of CO₂ kg^-1, respectively. These values are only 41.61 kWh.kg^-1 and 2-4 kg of CO₂ kg^-1 if a solar dryer is applied. The thermal diffusivities were 1.86✕10^-10 m² s^-1 (dehydration) and 1.08✕10^-10 m² s^-1 (rehydration), showing a weak effect of the dehydration process on the solid structure and properties.

Non-isothermal drying of bio-wastes: Kinetic analysis and determination of effective moisture diffusivity

A macro-thermogravimetric analysis (macro-TGA) was applied to analyse the non-isothermal drying of different bio-wastes (quince solid waste, grape marc and pumpkin shell from different enterprises located in San Juan Province, Argentina). The experimental data were obtained at three heating rates (5, 10 and 15 K/min) and two different initial moisture contents (30 and 50% w/w). These data were fitted using the Coats-Redfern and Sharp methods. The D2 model showed the best fitting for all experiments when using the Coats-Redfern method. It is assumed that drying occurs on the solid boundary. The predicted E_a values ranged from 43.60 to 64.50 kJ/mol for the three bio-wastes under the different experimental conditions. The E_a value slightly increases with the increase in heating rate because the wastes require more energy to undergo drying. Deff increases moderately with temperature at the beginning of the dehydration process; then, this increasing behaviour is significant due to the loss of continuous moisture channels. Otherwise, Deff increases with the initial moisture content, showing that the humidity of the samples did not reach the saturation content.

Methods of Analysis for Anthocyanins in Plants and Biological Fluids

Anthocyanins are the largest group of water-soluble pigments in the plant kingdom. They are responsible for most of the red, blue, and purple colors of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plant tissues or products. The analysis of anthocyanins is complex as a result of their ability to undergo structural transformations and complexation reactions. In addition, they are difficult to measure independently of other flavonoids, as they have similar structural and reactivity characteristics. Anthocyanins are generally extracted with weakly acidified alcohol-based solvents, followed by concentration (under vacuum), and purification of the pigments. Paper and/or thin-layer chromatography and UV-Vis spectroscopy have traditionally been used for the identification of anthocyanins. Capillary zone electrophoresis, a hybrid of chromatography and electrophoresis, is gaining popularity for the analysis of anthocyanins; however, liquid chromatography (LC) has become the standard method for identification and separation in most laboratories and may be used for both preparative and quantitative analysis. LC with mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy are possibly the most powerful methods for the structural elucidation of anthocyanins available, to date. At present, the most satisfactory method for mixture analysis is the multistep method of separation, isolation, and quantification by LC with peak identification by MS and high-field NMR.

Macro-TGA steam-assisted gasification of lignocellulosic wastes

The kinetics of the steam-assisted gasification for three different agro-industrial solid wastes (sawdust, olive and plum pits) was studied by macro thermo-gravimetric analysis (macro-TGA) at different heating rates (5, 10 and 15 K/min). The progressive CO release was moreover monitored to fully identify each step of the global gasification process. A single-step kinetics modelling was applied by using the Coats-Redfern method, with both a first order model for pyrolysis and a Ginstling - Brounstein 3D-diffusion model for the gasification stages, respectively. A comparison between macro-TGA and previous TGA results for the same bio-wastes was performed. Results indicated that the reaction proceeds in three well-defined and subsequent stages, involving water evaporation [298-473 K], biomass de-volatilization [473-648 K] with the highest production of CO, and char gasification as final step. Reaction rate parameters of the Arrhenius equation were determined for both the pyrolysis and gasification steps.

Composizione in antociani e flavonoli di vini prodotti nel territorio svizzero

In questa nota sono presentati i risultati delle determinazioni del profilo degli antociani e dei flavonoli di vini prodotti con uve di alcune varietà a frutto colorato prodotte a Nord della Svizzera, nel cantone di Schaffhausen , nella regione di Klettgau. I vini sono stati ottenuti da uve delle varietà di Vitis vinifera Cabernet Dorsa, Gamaret, Dornfelder, Acolon e di un incrocio interspecifico Sylvaner × Müller Thurgau × Chambourcin (Regent). Il profilo degli antociani dei vini delle varietà di Vitis vinifera studiate è risultato a netta prevalenza di molecole trisostituite all'anello laterale (soprattutto malvidina-3-glucoside e suoi derivati acilati). Il vino Regent si è rivelato ricco di antociani 3,5-diglucosidi (soprattutto della malvidina) che hanno superato in proporzione i monoglucosidi. Di rilevante interesse è risultato il profilo dei flavonoli per la presenza nei vini, appena dopo la fine della fermentazione alcolica, di quercetina aglicone, di solito assente nell'uva. I vini Acolon e Regent sono risultati i più ricchi di quercetina aglicone. L'origine della quercetina aglicone nei vini esaminati in questo lavoro è stata attribuita all'idrolisi che le forme glicosilate di questo flavonolo hanno subito, probabilmente per via enzimatica, già durante la macerazione fermentativa.

Serological markers of extracellular matrix remodeling predict transplant-free survival in primary sclerosing cholangitis

BACKGROUND

Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a progressive liver disease with a remarkably variable course. Biomarkers of disease activity or prognostic models predicting outcome at an individual level are currently not established.

AIM

To evaluate the prognostic utility of four biomarkers of basement membrane and interstitial extracellular matrix remodeling in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis.

METHODS

Serum samples were available from 138 large-duct primary sclerosing cholangitis patients (of which 102 [74%] with IBD) recruited 2008-2012 and 52 ulcerative colitis patients (controls). The median follow-up time was 2.2 (range 0-4.3) years. Specific biomarkers of type III and V collagen formation (PRO-C3 and PRO-C5, respectively) and type III and IV collagen degradation (C3M and C4M, respectively) were assessed. The Enhanced Liver Fibrosis test, including procollagen type III N-terminal peptide, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 and hyaluronic acid was assessed for comparison.

RESULTS

All markers were elevated in primary sclerosing cholangitis compared to ulcerative colitis patients (P < 0.001). PRO-C3 showed the largest difference between the two groups with a threefold increase in primary sclerosing cholangitis compared to ulcerative colitis patients. Patients with high baseline serum levels of all markers, except C3M, had shorter survival compared to patients with low baseline serum levels (P < 0.001). Combining PRO-C3 and PRO-C5 the odds ratio for predicting transplant-free survival was 47 compared to the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis test's odds ratio of 11.

CONCLUSIONS

Extracellular matrix remodeling is elevated in primary sclerosing cholangitis patients compared to ulcerative colitis patients. Furthermore, the interstitial matrix marker PRO-C3 was identified as a potent prognostic marker and an independent predictor of transplant-free survival in primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Measurement of b hadron lifetimes in pp collisions at s = 8 TeV

Measurements are presented of the lifetimes of theB 0 ,B s 0 , Λ b 0 , and B c + hadrons using the decay channelsB 0 → J / ψ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 ,B 0 → J / ψ K S 0 ,B s 0 → J / ψ π + π - ,B s 0 → J / ψ ϕ ( 1020 ) ,Λ b 0 → J / ψ Λ 0 , andB c + → J / ψ π + . The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7fb -1 , was collected by the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions ats = 8 TeV . TheB 0 lifetime is measured to be 453.0 ± 1.6 (stat) ± 1.8 (syst) μ m in J / ψ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 and 457.8 ± 2.7 (stat) ± 2.8 (syst) μ m in J / ψ K S 0 , which results in a combined measurement of c τ B 0 = 454.1 ± 1.4 (stat) ± 1.7 (syst) μ m . The effective lifetime of theB s 0 meson is measured in two decay modes, with contributions from different amounts of the heavy and light eigenstates. This results in two different measured lifetimes: c τ B s 0 → J / ψ π + π - = 502.7 ± 10.2 (stat) ± 3.4 (syst) μ m and c τ B s 0 → J / ψ ϕ ( 1020 ) = 443.9 ± 2.0 (stat) ± 1.5 (syst) μ m . The Λ b 0 lifetime is found to be 442.9 ± 8.2 (stat) ± 2.8 (syst) μ m . The precision from each of these channels is as good as or better than previous measurements. The B c + lifetime, measured with respect to theB + to reduce the systematic uncertainty, is 162.3 ± 7.8 (stat) ± 4.2 (syst) ± 0.1 ( τ B + ) μ m . All results are in agreement with current world-average values.

Adaptation of the By-Band randomized clinical trial to By-Band-Sleeve to include a new intervention and maintain relevance of the study to practice

Background

Recruitment into surgical RCTs can be threatened if new interventions available outside the trial compete with those being evaluated. Adapting the trial to include the new intervention may overcome this issue, yet this is not often done in surgery. This paper describes the challenges, rationale and methods for adapting an RCT to include a new intervention.

Methods

The By‐Band study was designed in the UK in 2009–2010 to compare the effectiveness of laparoscopic adjustable gastric band and Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass for severe obesity. It contained a pilot phase to establish whether recruitment was possible, and the grant proposal specified that an adaptation to include sleeve gastrectomy would be considered if practice changed and recruitment was successful. Information on changing obesity surgery practice, updated evidence and expert opinion about trial design were used to inform the adaptation.

Results

The pilot phase recruited over 13 months in 2013–2014 and randomized 80 patients (79 anticipated). During this time, major changes in obesity practice in the UK were observed, with gastric band reducing from 32·6 to 15·8 per cent and sleeve gastrectomy increasing from 9·0 to 28·1 per cent. The evidence base had not changed markedly. The British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and study oversight committees supported an adaptation to include sleeve gastrectomy, and a proposal to do so was approved by the funder.

Conclusion

Adaptation of a two‐group surgical RCT can allow evaluation of a third procedure and maintain relevance of the RCT to practice. It also optimizes the use of existing trial infrastructure to answer an additional important research question. Registration number: ISRCTN00786323 (http://www.isrctn.com/).

Field-Driven Mott Gap Collapse and Resistive Switch in Correlated Insulators

Mott insulators are "unsuccessful metals" in which Coulomb repulsion prevents charge conduction despite a metal-like concentration of conduction electrons. The possibility to unlock the frozen carriers with an electric field offers tantalizing prospects of realizing new Mott-based microelectronic devices. Here we unveil how such unlocking happens in a simple model that shows the coexistence of a stable Mott insulator and a metastable metal. Considering a slab subject to a linear potential drop, we find, by means of the dynamical mean-field theory, that the electric breakdown of the Mott insulator occurs via a first-order insulator-to-metal transition characterized by an abrupt gap collapse in sharp contrast to the standard Zener breakdown. The switch on of conduction is due to the field-driven stabilization of the metastable metallic phase. Outside the region of insulator-metal coexistence, the electric breakdown occurs through a more conventional quantum tunneling across the Hubbard bands tilted by the field. Our findings rationalize recent experimental observations and may offer a guideline for future technological research.

Microbiology of Fresh-cut Mangoes Prepared from Fruit Sanitised in Hot Chlorinated Water

Whole mangoes ( Mangifera indica, cv. Chok Anun) were washed in water with or without chlorine (100 mg total chlorine/L) at 11.7 ºC and 50 ºC before slicing and packaging. Microbiological analysis of the whole fruit showed that the stem scar contained larger populations of microorganisms than the skin. Washing reduced populations at both sites and the effect was enhanced by the addition of chlorine and heating of the wash water. None of the treatments prevented transfer of contaminants to the flesh during slicing, and evidence of spoilage in the form of discrete fungal colonies was observed in samples stored for 1 week at 5 ºC. Several species of bacteria, yeast and mould were recovered from packaged slices, but yeast and moulds accounted for the bulk of the spoilage of microflora. Barriers to the growth of these microorganisms may be necessary to reduce the risk of microbial spoilage of mango slices manufactured under commercial conditions.

Measurement of the differential cross section for top quark pair production in pp collisions at [Formula: see text]

The normalized differential cross section for top quark pair ([Formula: see text]) production is measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8[Formula: see text] at the CERN LHC using the CMS detector in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7[Formula: see text]. The measurements are performed in the lepton[Formula: see text]jets ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]jets) and in the dilepton ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]) decay channels. The [Formula: see text] cross section is measured as a function of the kinematic properties of the charged leptons, the jets associated to b quarks, the top quarks, and the [Formula: see text] system. The data are compared with several predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamic up to approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order precision. No significant deviations are observed relative to the standard model predictions.

Coupling scales for modelling heavy metal vaporization from municipal solid waste incineration in a fluid bed by CFD

Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) in fluidized bed is a very interesting technology mainly due to high combustion efficiency, great flexibility for treating several types of waste fuels and reduction in pollutants emitted with the flue gas. However, there is a great concern with respect to the fate of heavy metals (HM) contained in MSW and their environmental impact. In this study, a coupled two-scale CFD model was developed for MSWI in a bubbling fluidized bed. It presents an original scheme that combines a single particle model and a global fluidized bed model in order to represent the HM vaporization during MSW combustion. Two of the most representative HM (Cd and Pb) with bed temperatures ranging between 923 and 1073K have been considered. This new approach uses ANSYS FLUENT 14.0 as the modelling platform for the simulations along with a complete set of self-developed user-defined functions (UDFs). The simulation results are compared to the experimental data obtained previously by the research group in a lab-scale fluid bed incinerator. The comparison indicates that the proposed CFD model predicts well the evolution of the HM release for the bed temperatures analyzed. It shows that both bed temperature and bed dynamics have influence on the HM vaporization rate. It can be concluded that CFD is a rigorous tool that provides valuable information about HM vaporization and that the original two-scale simulation scheme adopted allows to better represent the actual particle behavior in a fluid bed incinerator.

Mesenchymal stem cell treatment for hemophilia: a review of current knowledge

Hemophilia remains a non-curative disease, and patients are constrained to undergo repeated injections of clotting factors. In contrast, the sustained production of endogenous factors VIII (FVIII) or IX (FIX) by the patient's own cells could represent a curative treatment. Gene therapy has thus provided new hope for these patients. However, the issues surrounding the durability of expression and immune responses against gene transfer vectors remain. Cell therapy, involving stem cells expanded in vitro, can provide de novo protein synthesis and, if implanted successfully, could induce a steady-state production of low quantities of factors, which may keep the patient above the level required to prevent spontaneous bleeding. Liver-derived stem cells are already being assessed in clinical trials for inborn errors of metabolism and, in view of their capacity to produce FVIII and FIX in cell culture, they are now also being considered for clinical application in hemophilia patients.

Marker profile for the evaluation of human umbilical artery smooth muscle cell quality obtained by different isolation and culture methods

Even though umbilical cord arteries are a common source of vascular smooth muscle cells, the lack of reliable marker profiles have not facilitated the isolation of human umbilical artery smooth muscle cells (HUASMC). For accurate characterization of HUASMC and cells in their environment, the expression of smooth muscle and mesenchymal markers was analyzed in umbilical cord tissue sections. The resulting marker profile was then used to evaluate the quality of HUASMC isolation and culture methods. HUASMC and perivascular-Wharton's jelly stromal cells (pv-WJSC) showed positive staining for α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SM-MHC), desmin, vimentin and CD90. Anti-CD10 stained only pv-WJSC. Consequently, HUASMC could be characterized as α-SMA+ , SM-MHC+ , CD10- cells, which are additionally negative for endothelial markers (CD31 and CD34). Enzymatic isolation provided primary HUASMC batches with 90-99 % purity, yet, under standard culture conditions, contaminant CD10+ cells rapidly constituted more than 80 % of the total cell population. Contamination was mainly due to the poor adhesion of HUASMC to cell culture plates, regardless of the different protein coatings (fibronectin, collagen I or gelatin). HUASMC showed strong attachment and long-term viability only in 3D matrices. The explant isolation method achieved cultures with only 13-40 % purity with considerable contamination by CD10+ cells. CD10+ cells showed spindle-like morphology and up-regulated expression of α-SMA and SM-MHC upon culture in smooth muscle differentiation medium. Considering the high contamination risk of HUASMC cultures by CD10+ neighboring cells and their phenotypic similarities, precise characterization is mandatory to avoid misleading results.

Study of the production of charged pions, kaons, and protons in pPb collisions at [Formula: see text]5.02[Formula: see text]

Spectra of identified charged hadrons are measured in pPb collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at [Formula: see text]. Charged pions, kaons, and protons in the transverse-momentum range [Formula: see text]-1.7[Formula: see text] and laboratory rapidity [Formula: see text] are identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker. The average [Formula: see text] increases with particle mass and the charged multiplicity of the event. The increase of the average [Formula: see text] with charged multiplicity is greater for heavier hadrons. Comparisons to Monte Carlo event generators reveal that Epos Lhc, which incorporates additional hydrodynamic evolution of the created system, is able to reproduce most of the data features, unlike Hijing and Ampt. The [Formula: see text] spectra and integrated yields are also compared to those measured in pp and PbPb collisions at various energies. The average transverse momentum and particle ratio measurements indicate that particle production at LHC energies is strongly correlated with event particle multiplicity.

Measurement of inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 8 TeV

A measurement of total and fiducial inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 8 TeV is presented. Electron and muon final states are analyzed in a data sample collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.2 ± 0.5 pb(-1). The measured total inclusive cross sections times branching fractions are σ(pp → WX)×B(W → ℓν) = 12.21 ± 0.03(stat) ± 0.24(syst) ± 0.32(lum) nb and σ(pp → ZX) × B(Z → ℓ+ℓ-) = 1.15 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.02(syst) ± 0.03(lum) nb for the dilepton mass in the range of 60-120 GeV. The measured values agree with next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD cross section calculations. Ratios of cross sections are reported with a precision of 2%. This is the first measurement of inclusive W and Z boson production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 8 TeV.

Local CFD kinetic model of cadmium vaporization during fluid bed incineration of municipal solid waste

The emissions of heavy metals during incineration of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) are a major issue to health and the environment. It is then necessary to well quantify these emissions in order to accomplish an adequate control and prevent the heavy metals from leaving the stacks. In this study the kinetic behavior of Cadmium during Fluidized Bed Incineration (FBI) of artificial MSW pellets, for bed temperatures ranging from 923 to 1073 K, was modeled. FLUENT 12.1.4 was used as the modeling framework for the simulations and implemented together with a complete set of user-defined functions (UDFs). The CFD model combines the combustion of a single solid waste particle with heavy metal (HM) vaporization from the burning particle, and it takes also into account both pyrolysis and volatiles' combustion. A kinetic rate law for the Cd release, derived from the CFD thermal analysis of the combusting particle, is proposed. The simulation results are compared with experimental data obtained in a lab-scale fluidized bed incinerator reported in literature, and with the predicted values from a particulate non-isothermal model, formerly developed by the authors. The comparison shows that the proposed CFD model represents very well the evolution of the HM release for the considered range of bed temperature.

Fractionation of triticale, wheat, barley, oats, canola, and mustard straws for the production of carbohydrates and lignins

Five cereal (triticale, durum wheat, CPS wheat, feed barley, oats) and two oilseed (canola, mustard) straws were fractionated with pressurized low polarity water in a flow-through reactor at 165°C with a flow rate of 115mL/min and a solvent-to-solid ratio of 60mL/g. The conversion and extraction of the major carbohydrates and lignin from the reactor system during hydrothermal treatment was largely completed within the first 20-30min. Glucan content of all straws were enriched by the process. More than 90% of the xylan and nearly 50% of the lignin were extracted and there was no effect on yield due to crop species. However, there were differences in solid residue and liquid extract composition. Cereal crops yielded a residue richer in glucan and lower in lignin. Oilseed crop residues contained very low levels of ash. Xylo-oligosaccharides from oilseed crops contain more acetyl and uronic acid substituents.

Centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s(NN)] = 2.76 TeV

The centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76  TeV is presented. The charged-particle density normalized per participating nucleon pair increases by about a factor of 2 from peripheral (70%-80%) to central (0%-5%) collisions. The centrality dependence is found to be similar to that observed at lower collision energies. The data are compared with models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions.

Optimization of processing conditions for the fractionation of triticale straw using pressurized low polarity water

Pressurized low polarity water (PLPW) fractionation of triticale straw was optimized to maximize hemicellulose and lignin yield, and to produce a cellulose rich fraction for biofuels production. The optimum PLPW conditions for hemicellulose yield was determined to be 165 °C, with a flow rate of 115 mL/min, and a solvent-to-solid ratio of 60 mL/g. Hemicellulose and lignin yield generally increased with increasing temperature and solvent-to-solid ratio. There was a small decrease in hemicellulose yield with an increase in flow rate. Minimum lignin content of the triticale straw residue after extraction was predicted to occur at a processing condition of 206 °C, 160 mL/min, and 67 mL/g. PLPW was successful in removing 73-78% of the hemicellulose, leaving a cellulose rich fraction (65% glucose concentration). Lignin was equally distributed between the solid residues and the extracts and most of the hemicellulose was extracted in oligomer form. Remaining solid residues after fractionation were highly digestible by cellulase enzymes.
