Abstract
Hermetia illucens is a species of great interest for numerous industrial applications. A high-quality reference genome is already available for H. illucens. However, the worldwide maintenance of numerous captive populations of H. illucens, each with its own genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, made it of interest to perform a de novo genome assembly on one population of H. illucens to define a chromosome-scale genome assembly. By combining the PacBio and the Omni-C proximity ligation technologies, a new H. illucens chromosome-scale genome of 888.59 Mb, with a scaffold N50 value of 162.19 Mb, was assembled. The final chromosome-scale assembly obtained a BUSCO completeness of 89.1%. By exploiting the Omni-C proximity ligation technology, topologically associated domains and other topological features that play a key role in the regulation of gene expression were identified. Further, 65.62% of genomic sequences were masked as repeated sequences, and 32,516 genes were annotated using the MAKER pipeline. The H. illucens Lsp-2 genes that were annotated were further characterized, and the three-dimensional organization of the encoded proteins was predicted. A new chromosome-scale genome assembly of good quality for H. illucens was assembled, and the genomic annotation phase was initiated. The availability of this new chromosome-scale genome assembly enables the further characterization, both genotypically and phenotypically, of a species of interest for several biotechnological applications.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD, including nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)) is a high-prevalence disorder, affecting about 1 billion people, which can evolve to more severe conditions like cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. NAFLD is often concomitant with conditions of the metabolic syndrome, such as central obesity and insulin-resistance, but a specific drug able to revert NAFL and prevent its evolution towards NASH is still lacking. With the liver being a key organ in metabolic processes, the potential therapeutic strategies are many, and range from directly targeting the lipid metabolism to the prevention of tissue inflammation. However, side effects have been reported for the drugs tested up to now. In this review, different approaches to the treatment of NAFLD are presented, including newer therapies and ongoing clinical trials. Particular focus is placed on the reverse cholesterol transport system and on the agonists for nuclear factors like PPAR and FXR, but also drugs initially developed for other conditions such as incretins and thyromimetics along with validated natural compounds that have anti-inflammatory potential. This work provides an overview of the different therapeutic strategies currently being tested for NAFLD, other than, or along with, the recommendation of weight loss.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a fatal tumor lacking effective therapies. The characterization of overexpressed genes could constitute a strategy for identifying drivers of tumor progression as targets for novel therapies. Thus, we performed an integrated gene-expression analysis on RNAseq data of 85 MPM patients from TCGA dataset and reference samples from the GEO. The gene list was further refined by using published studies, a functional enrichment analysis, and the correlation between expression and patients' overall survival. Three molecular signatures defined by 15 genes were detected. Seven genes were involved in cell adhesion and extracellular matrix organization, with the others in control of the mitotic cell division or apoptosis inhibition. Using Western blot analyses, we found that ADAMTS1, PODXL, CIT, KIF23, MAD2L1, TNNT1, and TRAF2 were overexpressed in a limited number of cell lines. On the other hand, interestingly, CTHRC1, E-selectin, SPARC, UHRF1, PRSS23, BAG2, and MDK were abundantly expressed in over 50% of the six MPM cell lines analyzed. Thus, these proteins are candidates as drivers for sustaining the tumorigenic process. More studies with small-molecule inhibitors or silencing RNAs are fully justified and need to be undertaken to better evaluate the cancer-driving role of the targets herewith identified.

Abstract
A case of prosthetic valve endocarditis due to methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) with cerebral metastatic seeding is described. The patient is a 61 year old man with diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure and previous bacterial endocarditis. Despite appropriate MSSA therapy, the patient was eventually cured with the introduction of linezolid, without needing surgical intervention.

Abstract
Macrocyclic lactones 1a-b have been synthesized and their potential therapeutic value evaluated. The key structural feature of these active 'chimera' compounds is the 12-membered lactone ring that brings together the well-known polysubstituted hydroquinone moiety of antioxidants and the alpha,alpha-dimethyl substituted acyl residue of gemfibrozil. Lactones 1a-b showed better activity than probucol, a classical phenolic antioxidant, in preventing the Cu++-induced oxidative modification of human LDL. The hypolipidaemic activity of the new lactones, evaluated as the inhibition of lipids biosynthesis in Hep-G2 cells, was comparable to that of gemfibrozil. These features, added to the lack of cytotoxicity, make this new class of medium sized lactones promising dual-action drugs useful as anti-atherosclerosis agents.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare the quality of life (QOL) and needs of people with schizophrenia in comprehensive treatment systems in two countries. One hundred people with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder were randomly selected from the caseload of a community mental health center in Boulder, Colorado, and 70 were similarly selected from public psychiatric treatment services in and around Bologna, Italy. Subjects were interviewed with QOL and needs assessment instruments and rated with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. Objective QOL measures favored Bologna subjects over Boulder subjects, particularly with respect to employment, accommodation, and family life. In a factor analysis, objective QOL variables sorted separately from subjective satisfaction ratings, suggesting that they measure different underlying constructs. Patient needs in both Boulder and Bologna samples were primarily psychological and social rather than basic survival issues. Boulder subjects were more likely to report accommodation needs. Many apparent QOL advantages for Bologna subjects could be attributed to the greater frequency with which the Italian patients lived with family of origin. Living with family also appeared to confer practical benefits in meeting needs. Objective QOL measures discriminated between patient populations better than subjective ratings of satisfaction and well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This research concerns those patients who most attend the community Mental Health Centre (CSM), hereby called "everyday patients". According to a previous research (Pileggi et al., 1992) a sample of patients mostly attending the Centre had been pointed out. Basing on the number of attendances, it emerged that some of those patients (57) had been on the average attending the Centre more than twice a week and, despite being only 10% of the total number of users, they had taken on a large share of the services offered by the Centre (30%). Therefore, those patients were the ones the Centre had been working for more intensely and continuously. Three years later, the object of this research is to check the assistance and clinical destiny of such patients and compare their patterns of attendances to those ones regarding the remainder of the CSM users. The hypothesis is that "everyday patients" are assisted by different and continuous treatments and that such a procedure prevents patients from dropping out and determines a strong reduction in relapses and less frequent attendances. DESIGN Longitudinal study on a 42 patient sample (19 males, 23 females) on therapy at CSM. SETTING Mental Health Centre, "Saragozza" District, Sanitary Unit of Bologna. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The following elements have been examined: 1) social and demographic features; 2) duration of psychiatric history; 3) clinical diagnosis according to DSM-III-R, set by patients personal psychiatrist; 4) global functioning level as examined by two psychiatrists or psychologists from the Centre, using DSM-III-R Global Functioning Scale (GFS); 5) actions carried out and patterns of using the CSM services over the past 12 months. Concordance measures among independent examiners (Cohen K) and non-parametric variability measures for comparison between groups (Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests) have been used. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Results partially confirm the original hypotheses. In particular, complicated services (psychological and pharmacological therapies and rehabilitation) are carried out for the most of "everyday patients" and much more intensely to them than to the remainder of the users. No drop-out has been found out, the global functioning level of the patients is good in most of cases and the number of necessary admissions to psychiatric wards has been reduced. However, the "attendance share" relevant to the sample of "everyday patients" is still high compared to the total number of the CSM users. Besides, discharge rate is nought.

Abstract
Killer strains of the genera Saccharomyces, Hansenula and Kluyveromyces were tested for killing activity against yeasts that cause trouble in the food industry (in the genera Zygosaccharomyces, Kloeckera, Saccharomycodes and Schizosaccharomyces). Saccharomyces strains killed only Zygosaccharomyces rouxii strains, while non-Saccharomyces strains showed a wider anti-yeast spectrum. The Kluyveromyces phaffii killer strain was of particular interest because of its killer action against Kloeckera apiculata, Saccharomycodes ludwigii and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii.

Abstract
Strains of the genera Saccharomyces, Saccharomycodes, Schizosaccharomyces, Hanseniaspora, Kluyveromyces, Pichia, Kloeckera, and Torulopsis were examined for killer, sensitive, neutral, and killer-sensitive characteristics against a killer strain (NCYC738) and a sensitive strain (NYCC1006) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Thirty-one Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains out of 782 screened were able to kill the sensitive test strain; 707 appeared to be sensitive and 44 neutral. A high frequency of killer phenotypes (71.4%) was found in Hansenula anomala var. anomala strains. No killer strains were present in the remaining 17 species considered.

Abstract
The yeast flora associated with the surface of grapes during ripening was studied with regard to different sectors of the grape skin and the position in the bunch by means of traditional as well as more vigorous preisolation and precounting treatments. The yeast number per square centimeter of skin increases with ripening and is highest in the area immediately surrounding the stem. The cluster sector closer to the peduncle seems to constitute a favorable substrate for yeasts, hosting a resident flora about 10 and 100 times higher than the central and lower parts of the bunch, respectively.Kloeckera apiculata was the normal resident species of grapes regardless of the sector or the ripening period, and constitutes the fermenting flora of mature grapes. The ecological implications of the results of this survey are discussed.

Abstract
The yeast flora associated with the surface of various natural materials have been studied on the assumption that individual cells and microcolonies are strongly retained by gummy and mucous secretions. Preisolation treatments based on vigorous shaking, percolation with an excess of water, and the sonication of samples allowed the recovery of a much higher number of species than did traditional isolation procedures. Results confirmed that a sequence of aggressive and disruptive actions on samples, together with an enrichment culture, is necessary to obtain an exhaustive picture of the actual yeast flora.
