Abstract
Bitter taste receptor TAS2R38 is expressed in the respiratory tract and can respond to quorum-sensing molecules produced by pathogens, stimulating the release of nitric oxide, with biocidal activity. TAS2R38 presents two main high-frequency haplotypes: the “taster” PAV and the “non-taster” AVI. Individuals carrying the AVI allele could be at greater risk of infections, including SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of PAV and AVI alleles in COVID-19 patients with severe or non-severe symptoms compared to healthy subjects to further corroborate, or not, the hypothesis that the PAV allele may act as a protecting factor towards SARS-CoV-2 infection while the AVI one may represent a risk factor. After careful selection, 54 individuals were included in the study and underwent genetic analysis and PROP phenotype assessment. Our investigation could not point out at a significant relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms responsible for PROP bitterness and presence/severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection, as previous studies suggested. Our results uncouple the direct genetic contribution of rs10246939, rs1726866 and rs713598 on COVID-19, calling for caution when proposing a treatment based on TAS2R38 phenotypes.

Abstract
Lutein is a dietary carotenoid preferentially accumulated in the eye and the brain in early life and throughout the life span. Lutein accumulation in areas of high metabolism and oxidative stress such as the eye and the brain suggest a unique role of this ingredient during the development and maturation of these organs of common embryological origin. Lutein is naturally provided to the developing baby via the cord blood, breast milk and then infant diet. The presence of this carotenoid depends on fruit and vegetable intakes and its bioavailability is higher in breastmilk. This paper aims to review the anatomical development of the eye and the brain, explore the presence and selective deposition of lutein in these organs during pregnancy and infancy and, based on its functional characteristics, present the latest available research on the beneficial role of lutein in the pediatric population. The potential effects of lutein in ameliorating conditions associated with increase oxidative stress such as in prematurity will be also addressed. Since consumption of lutein rich foods falls short of government guidelines and in most region of the world infant formulas lack this bioactive, dietary recommendations for pregnant and breastfeeding women and their child can help to bridge the gap.

Abstract
Background: In this project the authors use a narrative medicine (NM) approach to assess the promotion of trust in the relationship between physicians and their asthma patients. Methods: Following a NM educational course for physicians, a research was carried out in which at least 5 written narratives (parallel charts) for each participating physician were collected and qualitatively analysed according to Bury’s classification and the Grounded Theory. Results: The results of this study were of speculative and clinical interest. In particular, 66 participants wrote 314 narratives (246 on adult and 68 on paediatric patients). As a result of applying the NM approach, when the relationships remained problematic, many physicians wrote with a moral style about their adult (67%), and paediatric patients (33%) - especially in cases of asthmatic children’s or adolescents’ overprotective or absent families (40%) -. On the contrary, physicians who were able to listen to their patients with empathy (35%) made more shared decisions with patients, even with those they initially had a bad relationship. The used words of welcome, interest and acceptance were promoting patients’ trust that lead to restoring their activities in 45% of cases, according to physicians self-reporting. Conclusions: These approaches of NM are useful in daily clinical practice, with the goal of improving the quality of life (QOL) of patients with severe asthma, even in cases in which the doctor-patient relationship isn’t initially good.

Abstract
PURPOSE This paper explores the feasibility of a new therapy for the treatment of hypospadias patients. Hypospadias is a very common congenital malformation of male genitals, with very high rate of recurrences after surgery. The field of regenerative medicine, which offers innovative solutions for many pathologies, still does not offer reliable solution for this pathology. Here, we propose quality, safety, and clinical feasibility assessment for an oral mucosa advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) grown on a biocompatible scaffold for a clinical study on urethral reconstruction of hypospadias patients. METHODS Urethral and oral mucosal epithelia from donor biopsies were cultivated between two fibrin layers, under clinical-grade conditions for cell and tissue characterization and comparison, aimed at tissue engineering. In addition, single-clone analyses were performed to analyze gene expression profiles of the two epithelia by microarray technology. RESULTS Oral mucosa appeared suitable for urethral reconstruction. The resulting ATMP was proven to maintain stem cells and regenerative potency. The preclinical safety studies were performed on human tissues to assess abnormalities and tumorigenicity, and confirmed the safety of the ATMP. Finally, the patient selection and the clinical protocol for the upcoming clinical trial were defined. CONCLUSIONS Against this backdrop, in this paper, we are proposing a new reproducible and reliable ATMP for the treatment of hypospadias.

Abstract
PURPOSE To measure foveal morphology using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Three examiners classified normal subjects and patients with macular edema and epiretinal membranes from a normative database (299 OCT scans) and a study sample (80 OCT scans) on the basis of the foveal depression appearance (reference classification). The following parameters were measured for each OCT scan: Central Foveal Thickness (CFT), Central Subfield Thickness (CST), Central Subfield Volume (CSV), Centrofoveal Index (CI), Parafoveal Index (PI), and Foveal Indices (FI1, FI2, FI3). Foveal depression of OCT scans in the study sample were classified based on the values of OCT parameters using Bayesian statistics (test classifications). RESULTS Agreement between reference and test classifications was of 70% for CFT, 58.7% for CST, 60% for CSV, 80% for CI, 72.5% for PI, 88.7% for FI1, 96.2% for FI2 and 97.5% for FI3. CONCLUSIONS IF3 seems to provide a reliable measure of the foveal morphology.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that is very common among youth worldwide. The burden of this illness is very high not only considering financial costs but also on emotional and social functioning. Guidelines and many researches recommend to develop a good communication between physicians and children/caregiver and their parents. Nevertheless, a previous Italian project showed some criticalities in paediatric severe asthma management. The consensus gathered together experts in paediatric asthma management, experts in narrative medicine and patient associations with the aim of identify simple recommendation to improve communication strategies. Methods Participants to the consensus received the results of the project and a selection of narratives two weeks before the meeting. The meeting was structured in plenary session and in three working groups discussing respectively about communication strategies with children, adolescents and parents. The task of each working group was to identify the most effective (DO) and least effective practices (DON’ T) for 5 phases of the visit: welcome, comprehension of the context, emotions management, duration and end of the visit and endurance of the relationship. Results Participants agreed that good relationships translate into positive outcomes and reached consensus on communication strategies to implement in the different phase of relationships. Conclusions The future challenges identified by the participants are the dissemination of this Consensus document and the implementation of effective communication strategies to improve the management of pediatric asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vaccines often contain potentially allergenic material in addition to pathogen-specific immunogens that may induce allergic reactions. Parents and physicians often suspect that adverse reactions to vaccines are allergic in etiology. The concern that some of the substances contained in vaccines may trigger an anaphylactic reaction may lead to a low vaccination adherence with emergence of infectious disease epidemics. OBJECTIVE To provide practical suggestions for managing children suspected to have an allergic reaction to a vaccine. METHODS Information was obtained from a search of guidelines and relevant studies on allergic reactions to vaccines for infectious diseases. RESULTS True allergic reactions elicited by a vaccine are rare. Skin testing to the vaccine and to its components may identify the triggering agent. Graded dosing desensitization is helpful in children sensitized to the offending vaccine. CONCLUSION All children with a suspected allergic reaction to a vaccine should be carefully evaluated by routine allergy tests. When it is necessary, further immunization should be given under strict medical surveillance, which ensures that every child can safely complete the vaccination schedule.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The development of skeletal structures (cranial base, upper and lower) and upper airways spaces (oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal) of the skull has always been an issue of great interest in orthodontics. Foetal MRI images obtained as screening exam during pregnancy can help to understand the development of these structures using a sample cephalometric analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 28 MRI images in sagittal section of foetuses from 20th to 32th weeks of gestation were obtained to dispel doubts about the presence of skeletal malformations. Cephalometric measurements were performed on MRI T2-dependent images acquired with a 1.5 T scanner. The Software Osirix 5 permits to study sagittal and vertical dimensions of the skull analysing linear measurements, angles and areas of the skeletal structures. RESULTS Vertical and sagittal dimension of cranial base, maxilla and mandible grow significantly (P < .01) between the second and third trimester of gestational period as well as nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal spaces (P < .05). High correlation between the development of anterior cranial base and functional areas devoted to speech and swallow is demonstrated (r: .97). CONCLUSIONS The development of craniofacial structures during foetal period seems to show a close correlation between skeletal features and functional spaces with a peak between the second and third trimester of gestation. MRI images result helpful for the clinician to detect with a sample cephalometric analysis anomalies of skeletal and functional structures during prenatal period.

Abstract
Manipulating light at the nanoscale by means of dielectric nanoantennas recently received renewed attention thanks to the development of key enabling fabrication tools in semiconductor technology, combined with the extremely low losses exhibited by dielectrics in the optical regime. Nanostructures based on III-V type semiconductors, characterized by an intrinsic broken symmetry down to a single elementary cell, has already demonstrated remarkable nonlinear conversion efficiencies at scales well below the operating wavelength. In this Letter, we thoroughly investigate the emission properties of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in AlGaAs monolithic nanoantennas. Our findings point toward the pivotal role of volume susceptibility in SHG, further unraveling the physics behind the nonlinear processes in these systems. The extremely high SHG efficiency attained, together with the control over the polarized emission in these nanoantennas, constitute key ingredients for the development of tunable nonlinear metasurfaces.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insulin, 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] and folate have been differently associated with a risk of colonic neoplasms in the general population. Acromegalic patients have an increased risk of colorectal tumors and an association between fasting insulin concentrations and colonic lesions has been reported. However, it is unknown whether insulin, 25(OH)D3, folate, and homocysteine interact to determine the risk of colonic tumors in acromegaly. AIM To investigate whether serum insulin, 25(OH)D3, folate, and homocysteine concentrations were associated with precancerous colonic lesions in acromegalic patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cohort of 146 consecutive acromegalic patients was evaluated for colonoscopy findings and fasting insulin, 25(OH)D3, folate, and homocysteine levels. A preliminary study was conducted in 9 naïve acromegalic patients to evaluate the effect of somatostatin analogues (SSA) on serum levels of those factors. RESULTS Insulin reduced during SSA whereas the other factors did not change. In the cohort study, colonic lesions (14 adenomas; 32 hyperplastic polyps) were detected in 46 patients. Fasting insulin, 25(OH)D3, folate, and homocysteine levels did not differ in patients with or without colonic adenomas. High folate levels were associated with a lower risk of developing precancerous colonic lesions at the multivariate analysis, when corrected by age, gender, disease activity and SSA therapy. CONCLUSIONS Serum insulin, 25(OH)D3 and homocysteine serum concentrations do not seem to influence the development of precancerous colonic lesions in acromegalic patients, while higher folate levels may be associated with a lower risk of colonic lesions.

Abstract
The accurate detection and dosimetry of neutrons in mixed and pulsed radiation fields is a demanding instrumental issue with great interest both for the industrial and medical communities. In recent studies of neutron contamination around medical linacs, there is a growing concern about the secondary cancer risk for radiotherapy patients undergoing treatment in photon modalities at energies greater than 6 MV. In this work we present a promising alternative to standard detectors with an active method to measure neutrons around a medical linac using a novel ultra-thin silicon detector with 3D electrodes adapted for neutron detection. The active volume of this planar device is only 10 µm thick, allowing a high gamma rejection, which is necessary to discriminate the neutron signal in the radiotherapy peripheral radiation field with a high gamma background. Different tests have been performed in a clinical facility using a Siemens PRIMUS linac at 6 and 15 MV. The results show a good thermal neutron detection efficiency around 2% and a high gamma rejection factor.

Abstract
AIM Zirconia is a ceramic material with optimal aesthetic and mechanical properties that make it adapt to esthetic recontructions in narrow spaces. Aim of this split mouth clinical trial is to compare amount and structure of early plaque coated to zirconia and feldspathic ceramic. METHODS Four patients were included in this study. A removable acrylic device was manufactured for each subject and equipped on the lingual surface in correspondence to molar teeth with eight specimens. Four zirconia samples were positioned on the right side (test) of the device, and 4 feldspathic ceramic samples were positioned on the left side (control). One test and one control samples were harvested from each device at 6, 12, 24 and 36 hours after oral environment exposition. A total of four samples for each group were collected at each timepoint; three of these were used for reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis to evaluate the bacteria plaque amount; the remaining sample was used for scanning electron microscopy analysis to observe the bacteria plaque structure. RESULTS No significant differences were detected in terms of bacteria amount between test and control group at each timepoint. At scanning electron microscopy evaluation especially at 36 hou, bacteria plaque structure coated to zirconia surface appeared less uniform and compact compared to feldspathic ceramic. CONCLUSION Zirconia material may be considered adapt to prosthetic reconstructions that require high mechanical and aesthetic properties and that are exposed to the oral environment.

Abstract
In the present study, we report the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures using the Vapor-Liquid-Solid growth with different metal catalyst by electron beam evaporation method. As grown samples were characterized by means of Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. FESEM characterization showed the formation of different type of nanostructure depending on the metal catalyst. Array of well aligned nanorods were formed when Au and Fe were used as a catalyst. However, Sn catalyst induced the formation of nanoflakes. The presence of peak at 434 cm(-1) in Raman spectroscopy revealed the wurtzite nature of formed ZnO nanostructures. Nanoflakes showed a more strong UV emission in comparision to that of nanorods as revealed by Photoluminescence spectra.

Abstract
The development of new medical formulations (NMF) for reconstructive therapies has considerably improved the available treatment options for individuals requiring periodontal repair or oral implant rehabilitation. Progress in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine modalities strongly depends on validated pre-clinical research. Pre-clinical testing has contributed to the recent approval of NMF such as GEM 21S and INFUSE bone grafts for periodontal and oral regenerative therapies. However, the selection of a suitable pre-clinical model for evaluation of the safety and efficacy of a NMF remains a challenge. This review is designed to serve as a primer to choose the appropriate pre-clinical models for the evaluation of NMF in situations requiring periodontal or oral reconstruction. Here, we summarize commonly used pre-clinical models and provide examples of screening and functional studies of NMF that can be translated into clinical use.

Abstract
Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) stimulates repair of healing-impaired chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers and periodontal lesions. However, limitations in predictability of tissue regeneration occur due in part to transient growth factor bioavailability in vivo. Here, we report that gene delivery of PDGF-B stimulates repair of oral implant extraction socket defects. Alveolar ridge defects were created in rats and were treated at the time of titanium implant installation with a collagen matrix containing an adenoviral (Ad) vector encoding PDGF-B (5.5×108 or 5.5×109 pfu/ml), Ad encoding luciferase (Ad-Luc; 5.5×109 pfu/ml; control) or recombinant human PDGF-BB protein (rhPDGF-BB, 0.3 mg/ml). Bone repair and osseointegration were measured via backscattered SEM, histomorphometry, microcomputed tomography, and biomechanical assessments. Further, a panel of local and systemic safety assessments was performed. Results demonstrated bone repair was accelerated by Ad-PDGF-B and rhPDGF-BB delivery compared to Ad-Luc, with the high dose of Ad-PDGF-B more effective than the low dose. No significant dissemination of the vector construct or alteration of systemic parameters was noted. In summary, gene delivery of Ad-PDGF-B demonstrates regenerative and safety capabilities for bone tissue engineering and osseointegration in alveolar bone defects comparable to rhPDGF-BB protein delivery in vivo.

Abstract
Regenerative medicine refers to innovative therapies aimed at the permanent restoration of diseased tissues and organs. Regeneration of self-renewing tissues requires specific adult stem cells, which need to be genetically modified to correct inherited genetic diseases. Cultures of epithelial stem cells permanently restore severe skin and mucosal defects, and genetically corrected epidermal stem cells regenerate a normal epidermis in patients carrying junctional epidermolysis bullosa. The keratinocyte stem cell is therefore the only cultured stem cell used both in cell therapy and gene therapy clinical protocols. Epithelial stem cell identification, fate and molecular phenotype have been extensively reviewed, but not in relation to tissue regeneration. In this paper we focus on the localization and molecular characterization of human limbal stem cells in relation to corneal regeneration, and the gene therapy of genetic skin diseases by means of genetically modified epidermal stem cells.

Abstract
Linear arrays of noble metal nanoparticles, supporting Bragg plasmonic resonances, are proposed as optical nanoantennae. Electrodynamic calculations show that tunable, directional and wavelength selective emission enhancement is obtained throughout the visible and near-infrared spectrum by varying the dielectric environment and the array geometrical parameters, and thus tuning the Bragg modes. Large quantum efficiency enhancements are possible even in the case of poor emitters (1% intrinsic efficiency), spanning wavelengths that are relevant in lighting (lambda approximately equal 400 nm) and telecommunication (lambda approximately equal 1.5 microm) applications. Nanoantenna array angular emission is highly directional and extremely sensitive to the array geometrical parameters and the dielectric environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to demonstrate that performance of percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) associated with a self-drive control technique lowers the incidence of complications. METHODS A case-control, before-and-after, retrospective study. Place of study: A major teaching hospital in the Department of Emergency, Intensive Care Unit. PATIENTS we studied 128 patients who underwent fiberoptic-guided PDT over an 18 month period of time. Thirty-nine patients were assisted by conventional fiberoptic bronchoscopy, while 89 video-assisted fiberoptic procedures were performed in which the operator controlled his own actions on a screen. We defined perioperative complications as accidental extubation, perioperative hemorrhage, tracheal ring rupture, lesions of the tracheal wall, and abnormal insertion of the cannula. A Chi-square test, Student's t-test and U Mann Whitney test were used to compare the incidence of complications and the duration of procedure in the traditional fiberoptic PDT group and in the video-guided group. RESULTS Procedure time was significantly shorter in the group with the self-drive control technique. There was also a reduction of the number of perioperative complications. CONCLUSION Fiberoptic bronchoscopy associated with a video system seems effective in reducing the risk of perioperative complications.

Abstract
Immune thrombocytopenic purpura is an infrequent yet well-recognized complication of viral infections, such as mumps, rubella, varicella, cytomegalovirus, parvovirus and infectious monunucleosis by Epstein-Barr virus. Some recent studies have described a possible association between Henoch-Schonlein purpura, a non-thrombocytopenic purpura, and seropositivity for Bartonella henselae, but in the literature only sporadic case reports have described a severe immune thrombocytopenic purpura as a complication of Bartonella henselae infection. We report a case of an immunocompetent child with clinical and serological evidence of Bartonella henselae infection presenting with purpura and cervical lymphoadenopathy and treated with intravenous immunoglobulin. The patient obtained a rapid and persistent increase in platelet count and a complete regression of purpura.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluates the presence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its association with C-reactive protein (CRP) and other cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, in a sample of women with and without previous Gestational Diabetes (pGDM). METHODS One hundred and sixty-six women with pGDM and 98 women (controls) with uncomplicated pregnancy were studied 16 months after delivery. In all women, plasma glucose, insulin, lipid profile, serum uric acid, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and homocysteine were measured. MS was defined according to NCEP ATPIII criteria. RESULTS MS was identified in 15 pGDM women (9%) versus 1 control (1%) (p < 0.001). The more frequent metabolic traits were abdominal obesity (36% vs 17%) and low HDL-cholesterol (34% vs 17% in pGDM women and controls, respectively; all p < 0.01). HOMA-R, LDL-cholesterol, fibrinogen, serum uric acid and CRP resulted significantly higher in pGDM women with MS as compared to those without MS after adjustment for BMI. In women with no criteria for MS, only CRP levels were found to be higher in pGDM women compared to controls (p < 0.05). Seventeen percent of pGDM women with no criteria for MS had CRP levels >or=1 mg/L (all controls showed CRP levels <1 mg/L). After a stepwise regression analysis, CRP levels were independently correlated to HOMA-R (r2 = 0.27, p < 0.001) and fibrinogen (r2 = 0.30, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS In our population, MS occurs in a sizable proportion of pGDM women and is associated with increased levels of CRP, fibrinogen, uric acid and LDL-cholesterol. Moreover, higher levels of CRP, a marker of chronic low-grade inflammation, are present in a subset of women with pGDM, independently of MS.

Abstract
Cystatin C (Cys C) is a cysteine protease inhibitor produced at a constant rate by nucleated cells, filtered through the glomerular membrane and reabsorbed by kidney tubular cells. Aim of this cross-sectional and longitudinal study was to assess serum Cys C and creatinine (Crea) concentrations in thyroid dysfunction. One hundred and eighty-one patients, 26 with untreated non-toxic nodular goiter, 58 with hyperthyroidism, 31 on L-T4 suppressive therapy for non-toxic nodular goiter, 35 with short-term hypothyroidism after L-T4 withdrawal to perform whole body scan for thyroid cancer, 11 with long-term hypothyroidism due to chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and 20 patients with mild hypothyroidism were enrolled in the study. Fifty-seven age- and sex-matched normal subjects served as controls. Serum Cys C, Crea, free T4 (FT4), FT3 and TSH were assessed. Thirty hyperthyroid patients and 35 short-term hypothyroid patients were followed prospectively until euthyroidism was reached by methimazole or L-T4 therapy. The cross-sectional study showed that mean serum Crea concentrations were significantly reduced in overt hyperthyroid or subclinical hyperthyroid patients, while it was increased in overt hypothyroid patients, but not in mild hypothyroidism. Conversely, serum Cys C levels were significantly increased in overt hyperthyroid patients compared to controls (p<0.05), and significantly decreased in short-term, long-term and mild hypothyroids (p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.01, respectively). However, 36 (62%) hyperthyroid patients and 50 (76%) hypothyroid patients had normal serum Cys C values. In the prospective study, restoration of euthyroidism by either methimazole or L-T4 therapy was associated with normalization of mean serum Cys C concentrations. In conclusion, thyroid dysfunction affects serum Cys C concentration, possibly influencing the production rate of the protein. However, the observation that hyper- or hypothyroid patients have normal serum Cys C levels limits its use as a marker of peripheral thyroid hormone effect.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the predictive value of serum triglyceride levels (TG) for neonatal weight in pregnant women with positive diabetic screening but normal glucose tolerance. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We enrolled 180 pregnant Caucasian women with positive diabetic screening. All women underwent a 3-h 100-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 27th +/- 4 week of gestation. At the time of OGTT, we measured: fasting plasma glucose, fasting lipids profile and determined ApoE polymorphisms to evaluate the effects on lipid levels. In 83 women with normal glucose tolerance and at term delivery we evaluated the association between maternal serum TG, specific maternal parameters known to affect fetal growth and newborn weight. RESULTS Based on OGTT, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was diagnosed in 36 women (20%), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in 23 (13%), and normal glucose tolerance (NGT) in 121 (67%). Serum TG concentration was significantly higher in women with GDM (2.47 +/- 0.77 mmol/l) as compared with NGT (1.99 +/- 0.64 mmol/l) or IGT (1.98 +/- 0.81 mmol/l) (P < 0.01). ApoE3 allelic frequency was 86%, ApoE2 and ApoE4 were 5 and 9%, respectively. We found no clear-cut association between apoE genotype and serum TG concentration. Macrosomia and LGA newborns were more frequent in IGT than in GDM or NGT (P < 0.01). In the 83 women with positive diabetic screening but normal glucose tolerance who delivered at term, the incidence of LGA infants was significantly higher in those with TG levels higher than the 75th percentile (> 2.30 mmol/l) (21%) than in mothers who had normal TG levels (4.5%) (P < 0.05). Pre-pregnancy BMI (r(2) = 0.067), weight gain during pregnancy (r(2) = 0.062), fasting serum TG (r(2) = 0.09), and 2-h post-OGTT glucose levels (r(2) = 0.044) were all associated with neonatal body weight (all P < 0.05 or less). However, on a multiple regression analysis, only pre-pregnancy BMI (F-test = 7.26, P < 0.01), and fasting serum TG (F-test = 4.07, P < 0.01) were independently associated with birth weight. CONCLUSIONS Pre-pregnancy BMI and fasting maternal serum TG determined in the last trimester of gestation were independently associated with neonatal birth weight in women with normal glucose tolerance, but positive screening test. TG levels measured in the third trimester of pregnancy are independent of the genetic polymorphism of ApoE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several surgical techniques have been proposed for the treatment of piebaldism. These procedures, however, are poorly suited for the treatment of large leucodermal lesions, can cause scars and require multiple donor sites. Recently, it has been reported that autologous cultured epidermis induces scarless repigmentation of large vitiligo lesions, using a single small donor site. OBJECTIVES To induce permanent repigmentation of large achromic lesions in patients suffering from piebaldism by means of autologous cultured epidermal grafts using a rapid, simple and non-invasive surgical procedure. METHODS Six patients with piebaldism were enrolled in this study. Achromic epidermis was removed by means of appropriately set erbium:YAG laser and autologous cultured epidermal grafts were applied on to the recipient bed. Melanocyte content was evaluated by 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine reaction. The percentage of repigmentation was calculated using a semiautomatic image analysis system. RESULTS Autologous cultured epidermis, bearing a controlled number of melanocytes, induced repigmentation of all piebald lesions. The mean percentage repigmentation was 95.45% (2791.5 cm2 repigmented/2924.2 cm2 transplanted). CONCLUSIONS Autologous cultured epidermal grafts induce permanent and complete repigmentation of piebald lesions, in the absence of scars. Erbium:YAG laser surgery is a rapid and precise tool for disepithelialization, hence allowing treatment of large piebald lesions during a single surgical operation.
