Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) was to assess the efficacy of different wound-healing agents for palatal donor area management after soft tissue graft harvesting. METHODS Electronic searches in six databases were conducted for publications up to October 2023. Studies with data from patients undergoing therapeutic approaches using agents for palatal healing after gingival graft harvesting were included. Data about postoperative pain, wound-healing and postoperative complications reported for each agent were extracted. Three different tools were used for the risk of bias within studies evaluation (Murad tool for case series and case report, RoB 2.0 tool for randomized studies and ROBINS-I tool for non-randomized studies). A Bayesian random effects NMA was conducted for postoperative pain levels and wound healing. RESULTS Eighty-four publications were included in the systematic review (qualitative analysis), with 14 of these subjected to NMA (quantitative analysis). The summarized results from the qualitative and quantitative analysis showed that all wound-healing agents evaluated promoted better pain control and wound healing compared to spontaneous healing and hemostatic sponges alone. The NMA outcomes reveal that leucocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) was the most effective agent in reducing postoperative pain in all analyzed periods. Moreover, the L-PRF seems to accelerate wound healing and reduce postoperative complications compared to other agents. CONCLUSION In conclusion, the L-PRF was the most effective agent in reducing postoperative pain, accelerating wound healing and reducing postoperative complications after harvesting soft tissue grafts from the palatal area.

Abstract
This study evaluates the effects of a green tea (Camellia sinensis) and hyaluronic acid gel on fibroblast activity and alveolar bone repair following third molar extractions. By examining the gene expression related to cell survival, proliferation, and angiogenesis, the study bridges in vitro findings with clinical outcomes in a split-mouth randomized trial. Human fibroblasts were exposed to the treatment gel, analysing gene expression through RT-qPCR. Twenty participants undergoing bilateral third molar extractions received the test gel on one side and a placebo on the other. Assessments included patient-reported outcomes, professional evaluations, and radiographic analyses at multiple postoperative intervals. The test gel significantly enhanced AKT, CDKs, and VEGF gene expressions, indicating a positive effect on angiogenesis and cell proliferation. Clinically, it resulted in reduced exudate, swelling, and secondary interventions, with radiographs showing improved alveolar bone density after 90 days. The green tea and hyaluronic acid gel significantly improves soft tissue and bone healing post-extraction, offering a promising adjunctive therapy for enhancing postoperative recovery. This gel represents a novel adjuvant treatment option for facilitating improved healing outcomes after third molar extractions, highlighting its potential utility in clinical dental practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the use of PBMT in the soft tissue and bone healing after third molar extraction using the dual-wavelength laser directly into the post-extraction alveoli (PBMT-I), or PBMT with a red laser directly into the alveoli and with an infrared laser externally on the patient's face (PBMT-IE). METHODS Twenty patients underwent extraction of four third molars were involved in this split-mouth double-blind randomized controlled trial. The Post-extraction alveoli were treated with the following protocols: PBMT-IE: Application of a red laser directly into the alveolus, and infrared laser irradiation transcutaneously and PBMT-I: Application of dual-wavelength laser intraorally. Patients were clinically evaluated 3, 7, 14, 30, and 90 days after the surgical procedure. The analyses in this study were divided into qualitative (centered on the patient's report and on the evaluators' analysis), and quantitative analyses (measurement of the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the face with the objective of measuring post-surgical edema and radiographic analyses for evaluation of the density and structure of the newly formed bone). RESULTS A progressive improvement was observed in all parameters evaluated in this study, however, this improvement was time dependent, with no distinct effect observed between the PBMT treatments applied. CONCLUSION The different dual-wavelength PBMT protocols induced a similar postoperative clinical course in third molar extraction surgeries, with a reduced occurrence of complications and a good healing pattern of hard and soft tissues.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of supraphysiologic administration of testosterone in an early and late model of implant osseointegration in rat tibiae. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 40 rats were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10/ group), which were divided according to the type of experiment and time of osseointegration: (1) vehicle (14 days), (2) testosterone (14 days), (3) vehicle (42 days), and (4) testosterone (42 days). Testosterone cypionate (7.5 mg/kg) administration started 4 weeks before implant placement, and the injections were performed daily until euthanasia. Machined-surface titanium implants (2.2 mm in diameter and 4 mm high) were placed bilaterally in the tibia of animals 28 days after the first testosterone injection. At days 14 and 42 after implant placement, euthanasia was performed and the tibiae were harvested to perform biomechanical evaluation and histomorphometric analysis of bone-to-implant contact (BIC%) and bone between the threads (BBT%). RESULTS There was no statistical difference in the removal torque of the implants between the groups treated with the vehicle (control group) or testosterone (P > .05). At 14 days of osseointegration, the BIC% and BBT% did not differ between vehicle or testosterone groups (P > .05), while at 42 days, both the BIC% and BBT% were significantly reduced by testosterone compared to the vehicle group (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Testosterone cypionate in supraphysiologic dose impaired late-phase osseointegration in rat tibiae.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the analgesic efficacy of 4% articaine associated with epinephrine (1:100,000), and 2% lidocaine associated with epinephrine (1:100,000) in third molar extraction surgery. METHODS Sixty patients who underwent surgeries to extract upper and lower third molars were included in this split-mouth, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial. The groups in this study were divided according to the anesthetic solution used to provide local anesthesia during extraction of upper and lower third molars: (1) 4% articaine associated with epinephrine (1:100,000); (2) 2% lidocaine associated with epinephrine (1:100,000). The time to the beginning and end of the sensation of analgesia, pain sensation according to the VAS scale, and number of anesthetic tubes necessary for supplementation were analyzed. RESULTS It was found that the onset time for analgesia was shorter on the side anesthetized with articaine compared to the side anesthetized with lidocaine (122.1 ± 52.90 s vs. 144.5 ± 68.85 s) (p < 0.05). In addition, the number of tubes used for anesthetic supplementation was also reduced on the articaine side compared to the lidocaine side (0.26 ± 0.48 vs. 0.50 ± 0.75) (p < 0.05). There were no differences between the anesthetic solutions in the other evaluated parameters. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that the use of 4% articaine associated with epinephrine (1:100,000) reduced the time of onset of analgesia and the necessity for anesthetic supplementation in third molar extraction surgeries compared to the use of 2% lidocaine associated with epinephrine (1:100,000).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the osseointegration of implants with hydrophobic (HFB) and hydrophilic (HFL) surfaces in a murine model of high-dose bisphosphonates (BPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-four rats were randomly allocated into four groups: control group with HFB implants (CG-HFB), control group with HFL implants (CG-HFL), BP group with HFB implants (BP-HFB), and BP group with HFL implants (BP-HFL). Animals were euthanized after 15 and 45 days (n=8). The dependent variables assessed were the removal torque (biomechanical analysis), the bone volume around the implants (%BV/TV) (microtomographic analysis), the bone-implant contact (%BIC), the bone between the threads (%BBT) (histomorphometric analysis), and the expression of bone metabolism markers (immunohistochemistry analysis). RESULTS The CG-HFL and BP-HFL groups presented higher removal torque than the CG-HFB and BP-HFB implants. The %BIC of the CG-HFL surfaces was slightly higher than that of the CG-HFB implants. The BP-HFB and BP-HFL groups presented a higher %BIC than that of the CG-HFB and CG-HFL groups (p<0.001). BP therapy also increased the %BBT at both implant surfaces. Higher levels of ALP were observed in the matrix region of bone tissue on the HFL surfaces than on the HFB surfaces. CONCLUSION Both surfaces enable osseointegration in rats under BP therapy. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The study demonstrates that hydrophobic (HFB) and hydrophilic (HFL) implant surfaces can promote osseointegration in rats undergoing bisphosphonate therapy. The HFL surfaces exhibited improved biomechanical performance, higher bone-implant contact, and increased bone volume, suggesting their potential clinical relevance for implant success in individuals on bisphosphonate treatment.

Abstract
This study evaluated the influence of a fluoride-modified titanium surface on osseointegration in rats with induced diabetes. One hundred and eighty rats were randomly allocated into 3 groups with 60 animals each: Control group (C): Animals without diabetes; Diabetes Group (D): Animals with uncontrolled induced diabetes; Controlled Diabetes Group (CD): Animals with diabetes induced controlled by the insulin administration. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection. Each animal received 2 implants in the proximal tibial metaphysis, one with the machined surface (M) and the other one with a fluoride-modified titanium surface (F), after 4 weeks of induction of diabetes. The animals were submitted to euthanasia 2, 4, and 6 weeks after the implant placement (n = 20 animals/group). The osseointegration was evaluated by the implant removal torque test and the histometric analysis of the non-decalcified histological sections: 1) Contact bone/implant (%BIC); 2) Bone tissue area between implant threads (%BBT). Implants with F surface showed a higher removal torque than implants with surface M in all groups. There was no difference in %BIC between the groups regardless of the surface used. The F surface showed a tendency to present higher %BBT values for the 3 evaluation periods in the D group. The fluoride-modified implant surface has no impact on the %BIC and %BBT. However, the fluoride-modified implant surface increases the locking of the implants with the bone. The hyperglycemia was associated with lower removal torque values despite the surfaces of the implant used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a gel containing green tea extract and hyaluronic acid (HA) on pain scores and wound healing in donor sites after free gingival graft (FGG). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-two patients requiring FGG were included in three groups: (1) control group (n = 14), no material was placed in the donor area; only the clot was kept in position by sutures; (2) placebo group (n = 14), vehicle gel applied 3 times a day for 7 days; and (3) test group (n = 14), gel containing green tea extract and HA applied 3 times a day for 7 days. The wound size by clinical measurement (WS-CM) and photographic image (WS-PI), complete wound epithelialization (CWE), and palatal mucosa color were evaluated after 3 days and 1, 2, and 4 weeks postoperatively. The visual analog scale (VAS) for pain and analgesic consumption were used to assess participant's perception in the same postoperative periods. RESULTS A similar progressive reduction in the wound size, associated with an improvement in the color pattern, was observed in all groups (p > 0.05). No significant differences were found for CWE and pain assessment between the examined groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The gel containing green tea extract and HA application in palatal wounds after FGG removal does not provide clinical healing benefits using this investigated protocol. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This is the first clinical study evaluating the effect of gel containing green tea extract and HA on the palate postoperative pain control and wound healing after FGG. Abstract
The possibilities for oral bone regeneration procedures vary depending on the type of bone defect to be treated, which in turn dictate the type of graft to be used. Atrophic alveolar ridges are non-contained defects and pose a challenging defect morphology for bone regeneration/augmentation. Successful results are regularly obtained with the use of particulate grafts in combination with barrier membranes. In cases of very narrow ridges with need of larger amount of bone augmentation, block grafts are often used. Fresh-frozen allogeneic bone block grafts have been proposed as an alternative to autogenous (AT) bone blocks. Based on a systematic appraisal of pre-clinical in vivo studies and clinical trials including a direct comparison of fresh-frozen bone (FFB) blocks versus AT bone blocks it can be concluded that a FFB block graft: (a) cannot be considered as a reliable replacement of a AT bone block, and (b) should only be considered in cases where the amount of necessary augmentation-in a lateral direction-is relatively limited, so that the main portion of the body of the implant lies within the inner (i.e., the vital) aspect of the block.

Abstract
Routine use of antibiotics for dental implant installation is widely applied in dental practice to prevent postoperative infection and implant loss. However, the effectiveness and necessity of such protocols have not been consensual in the literature. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of antibiotic prophylaxis on survival of dental implants placed in clinically healthy patients by unexperienced operators. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted. Ninety patients who received between 2 and 4 dental implants by unexperienced operators were enrolled in this study. Patients were randomly allocated in 2 groups. For the antibiotic group (n = 47), patients received 1 g of preoperative amoxicillin; in the placebo group (n = 43), patients received preoperative placebo administration. Each patient was evaluated preoperatively, 2 days, and 7 days postoperatively. Factors evaluated were mouth opening amplitude, assessment of referred pain through a visual analogue scale, and characteristic signs of infection (presence of fistula, ulceration in the surgical wound, tissue necrosis at the edges of the wound, dehiscence of the surgical flap, and presence of purulent exudate in the surgical wound). Implant survival was evaluated until 90 days postsurgical procedure. Results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in postoperative healing, swelling, and pain. However, more loss of dental implants was observed in the placebo group (14.9% vs 2.3%). Use of antibiotic prophylaxis reduced implant loss that was previously placed by unexperienced operators.

Abstract
This study presented a rehabilitation option for malpositioned implants; this involved obtaining their position and inclination through intraoral scanning, and producing a customized abutment with CAD/CAM technology. The patient in this case report presented a root fracture in tooth 21 and was subjected to extraction, implant installation, and immediate provisional prosthesis. The implant was installed with a distal inclination due to anatomical limitations. After osseointegration, an intraoral scanning transfer provided a digital model (file extension .stl), which reproduced the implant's position and inclination. Then, the file was sent so that a customized abutment (CAD/CAM) could be manufactured, promoting the final rehabilitation of the case; this allowed for good hygiene, load distribution in the dynamic interocclusal relationship, and favorable esthetics, whereas many would otherwise recommend implant removal. The result presented lower costs, a shorter time frame, and a lower morbidity for the patient.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the effects of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF +) on the healing of upper third molar post-extraction sockets. METHODS Sixteen patients who underwent extractions of the upper third molars (18 and 28) were included in this randomized split-mouth study. The alveoli on the test side were filled with A-PRF + , while the control side was maintained with blood clot. The side that received treatment was randomly defined. Alveolar bone regeneration was evaluated by CBCT scans to assess healing stage, bone density, and fractal analysis 1 week and 90 days post-extraction. Additionally, pain, edema, bleeding, and soft tissue alveolar repair were evaluated by clinical analyses 3, 7, 14, 30, and 90 days after the surgical procedure using a visual analog scale. RESULTS There were no clinical differences regarding treatments in any experimental period. In the tomographic evaluation, at 7 days, the alveoli treated with A-PRF + presented a suggestive sign of higher bone density than the control alveoli, which was not confirmed 90 days after the surgical procedure. CONCLUSION Thus, the use of A-PRF + does not demonstrate a clinical advantage in the repair of post-extraction sockets of upper third molars.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to examine the mechanical behavior of two-piece abutments (Morse taper with 16° internal angulation and Morse taper with 11.5° internal angulation) before and after cyclic fatigue testing, following ISO 14801:2016 guidelines. The specimens were divided into three groups: a modified Morse taper with a taper angle of 16° (GM group), a conventional Morse taper (taper angle of 11.5° deg) with a two-piece (CMt group), and one-piece abutments (CMo group). Each experimental group was formed by ten implants and ten abutments (n = 10) for a total of 30 specimens (n = 30). The abutments were tightened and loosened, and a fatigue test was applied with 15 Hz and 5 × 106 cycles. Subsequently, the abutments were loosened, and a pull-out test was performed on the CMt group. Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted on stress concentration regions. The statistical analysis of the loosening test was performed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests (p < 0.05) to compare screw loosening within each group and between the groups with and without mechanical fatigue. Significant differences were found among the three groups in the loosening test when analyzing the values with and without fatigue (p < 0.001) within each group. When the groups were compared with each other, there was also a significant difference between them (p < 0.001), except between groups GM and CMt without fatigue (p = 0.840). In the pull-out test of the CMt group, the sample exhibited frictional locking only after fatigue (mean = 94.2 N). The FEA demonstrated a varied stress distribution in all groups. The stress was found to be more concentrated in the upper third and middle third regions of the implant, as well as in the opposite region of the load application for all three groups. Although the CMo group showed lower rates of loosening, it displayed a poorer stress distribution in comparison to the GM and CMt groups. On the other hand, the CMt group exhibited a satisfactory frictional lock after undergoing the fatigue tests.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) with a red or infrared laser on the repair of post extraction sockets in rats administered alendronate (ALN). Forty male rats were randomly allocated into four groups: Control Group (CTR): subcutaneous administration of saline solution throughout the experimental period; Alendronate Group (ALN): subcutaneous administration of alendronate during the entire experimental period; Alendronate/Red Laser Group (ALN/RL): administration of ALN and irradiation with a GaAlAs laser (λ 660 nm); and Alendronate/Infrared Laser Group (ALN/IRL): administration of ALN and irradiation with a GaAlAs laser (λ 830 nm). The first lower molars were extracted 60 days after the beginning of the administration of the drugs. The PBMT was applied after tooth extraction (7 sessions with intervals of 48 hours between sessions). Thirty days after tooth extraction, the animals were euthanized. Micro-CT and histometric analysis were performed to assess the bone healing and soft tissue repair of the tooth socket. The ALN group presented with more bone than the CTR; however, most of this bone was necrotic. ALN does not affect the bone microarchitecture. On the other hand, PBMT with IRL enhances the bone density due to the increase in the number and reduction in the spacing of the trabeculae. The amount of vital bone and connective tissue matrix was higher in the ALN/RL and ALN/IRL groups than in the ALN and CTR groups. PBMT enhanced the healing of the post extraction sockets in rats subjected to ALN administration. Furthermore, IRL improved the new bone microarchitecture.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the osseointegration of a hydrophilic surface (blasting + acid etching + immersion in isotonic solution) in comparison with that of a control surface (blasting + acid etching) using an experimental model of low-density bone. To perform the study, 24 rabbits were submitted to the installation of 4 implants in the iliac bone bilaterally: 2 implants with a control surface and 2 implants with a hydrophilic surface. The rabbits were euthanized at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after implant installation. After euthanasia, one implant from each surface was used to perform the removal torque analysis, and the other implant was used for the execution of non-decalcified histological sections and evaluation of the bone implant contact (% BIC) as well as the fraction of bone tissue area between the implant threads (% BBT). The implants with a hydrophilic surface presented higher %BIC (42.92 ± 2.85% vs. 29.49 ± 10.27%) and % BBT (34.32 ± 8.52% vs. 23.20 ± 6.75%) (p < 0.05) in the 2-week period. Furthermore, the hydrophilic surface presented higher removal torque in the 8-week period (76.13 ± 16.00 Ncm2 vs. 52.77 ± 13.49 Ncm2) (p<0.05). Implants with a hydrophilic surface exhibited acceleration in the process of osseointegration, culminating in greater secondary stability in low-density bone than in implants with a control surface.

Abstract
Titanium surface modifications are widely used to modulate cellular behavior by recognition of topographical cues. However, how those modifications affect the expression of mediators that will influence neighboring cells is still elusive. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of conditioned media from osteoblasts cultured on laser-modified titanium surfaces on the differentiation of bone marrow cells in a paracrine manner and to analyze the expression of Wnt pathway inhibitors. Mice calvarial osteoblasts were seeded on polished (P) and Yb:YAG laser-irradiated (L) Ti surfaces. Osteoblast culture media were collected and filtered on alternate days to stimulate mice BMCs. Resazurin assay was performed every other day for 20 days to check BMC viability and proliferation. After 7 and 14 days of BMCs maintained with osteoblasts P and L-conditioned media, alkaline phosphatase activity, Alizarin Red staining, and RT-qPCR were performed. ELISA of conditioned media was conducted to investigate the expression of Wnt inhibitors Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) and Sclerostin (SOST). BMCs showed increased mineralized nodule formation and alkaline phosphatase activity. The L-conditioned media enhanced the BMC mRNA expression of bone-related markers Bglap, Alpl, and Sp7. L-conditioned media decreased the expression of DKK1 compared with P-conditioned media. The contact of osteoblasts with Yb:YAG laser-modified Ti surfaces induces the regulation of the expression of mediators that affect the osteoblastic differentiation of neighboring cells. DKK1 is among these regulated mediators.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nicotine administration on the osseointegration of a superhydrophilic implants surface on rat tibiae. Thirty-two rats were used and divided into 2 groups according to the administration or not of nicotine: HH - Installation of implants with superhydrophilic surfaces in healthy animals; and HN - Installation of implants with superhydrophilic surfaces in animals subjected to nicotine administration. The animals were euthanized 15 and 45 days after implant placement (n = 8). Osseointegration was assessed by means of biomechanical analyses (removal torque), microcomputed tomography (volume of bone around the implants- %BV/TV), and histomorphometry (bone-implant contact -%BIC and the bone area between implant threads -%BBT). The animals subject to the nicotine administration presented lower removal torque than the control animals at the 45-day period (21.88 ± 2.80 Ncm vs. 17.88 ± 2.10 Ncm). The implants placed in the control rats presented higher %BIC (54.26 ± 6.59% vs. 39.25 ± 4.46%) and %BBT (50.57 ± 5.28% vs. 32.25 ± 5.24%) than the implants placed in nicotine animals at 15-day period. The nicotine administration reduces the osseointegration at 15 days, however, the superhydrophilic surface equalized the osseointegration in nicotine-exposed animals compared with healthy animals after 45 days of implant placement.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a surface modified by blasting and acid attack and maintained in an isotonic solution compared to a machined surface on osseointegration in normo- and hyperglycaemic animals. Sixty-four animals were allocated into 4 groups with 16 animals each, and they were subdivided into two experimental periods (15 and 45 days), with 8 animals in each group. The groups were divided according to the type of implant that was installed in the animals' tibia and the animals' systemic condition: CM - Machined implants placed in Healthy animals; CH - Hydrophilic implants placed in Healthy animals, HM - Machined implants placed in animals with hyperglycaemia; HH- Hydrophilic implants installed in animals with hyperglycaemia. The following analyses were performed: biomechanical (removal torque), microtomographic (evaluation of the bone volume around the implants- BV/TV), and histomorphometric (evaluation of bone-implant contact BIC% and of the bone formation area between the threads BBT%). It was found that the implants with hydrophilic surfaces presented higher removal torques and quantities of BV/TV% and higher BIC% and BBT% values in normo- and hyperglycaemic animals. The results of this study indicated that the hydrophilic surface accelerates the osseointegration process (~ 15% BIC/BBT at 15-day period), especially in animals with hyperglycaemia. The hydrophilic surface equaled the osseointegration between normo- and hyperglycaemic animals, reversing the negative potential of hyperglycaemia on the osseointegration process.

Abstract
The use of selective barriers as resorbable membranes has become a routine clinical procedure for guided bone regeneration. Therefore, the production of membranes with a low inflammatory potential during their resorption process has become the goal of a considerable number of researches. Aim: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of poly (L- lactic acid) (PLLA) and biocelulose membranes (BC) inserted in the subcutaneous tissue on the dorsum of rats. Methods: Fifteen animals underwent surgical procedures for the insertion of 4 types of membranes: COL (Collagen membrane) – Control Group; BC (Biocellulose membrane); BCAg (Biocellulose membrane impregnated with Silver); PLLA (Poly (L-lactic acid) membrane). All membrane types were inserted into each animal. Animals were euthanized after 3, 7, and 15 days of the surgical procedure. Descriptive histological analyses were carried out to investigate host tissue reaction to membrane presence by assessing the anti-inflammatory process composition associated with the membrane resorption and the presence of foreign-body reaction or encapsulation. Results: The BC membranes showed a higher degree of inflammation and poor pattern of integration with the surrounding tissues than the PLLA and COL membranes. Conclusion: The PLLA and COL membranes present better biocompatibility than the BC membranes.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to determine the prevalence, beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions of hookah use in a population of undergraduate students at a large public university in Brazil. Methods The sample consisted of 1348 undergraduate students aged over 18-year-old. They completed structured questionnaires on demographic information and close-ended questions on the past and current experiences of smoking hookah. The data underwent descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression. Findings Finally, 1298 valid survey forms were obtained from printed and digital questionnaires. More than half (53.9%) of participants reported having tried hookah at least once, however, only 10.8% reported they had experienced it within the last 30 days. The majority of the studied population presented acceptable beliefs about the harmfulness and addictive capacity of hookah smoking. However, when comparing the perceptions of those who had smoked and those who had never smoked hookah, and also, the perceptions of users and non-users, significant differences were observed. Students who were users or had already tried hookah showed a tendency to underestimate the deleterious effects of this type of smoking. Conclusion It could be concluded that hookah smoking was common among Brazilian university students. In addition, preoccupying misperceptions of hookah's harmfulness and addictive capacity were found. The results showed that the epidemic of hookah smoking, especially among young people, has spread far beyond the Arab world and the Persians. Accordingly, preventive measures must be taken if this population is to be protected from addiction and other serious health problems.

Abstract
This study evaluated the osseointegration of implants in areas grafted with biphasic ceramic based on hydroxyapatite/β-tricalcium phosphate (HA/TCP) and in native bone (NB). Twenty-eight rats were randomly assigned into two groups of 14 animals each: HA/TCP group: implants installed in areas grafted with HA/TCP and NB group: implants installed in areas of native bone. Bone defects were made in both tibiae of the rats belonging to the HA/TCP group and then filled with this bone substitute. After 60 days, the rats were submitted to surgical procedures for implant placement in grafted areas in both tibiae in the HA/TCP group while the implants were installed directly in native bone in the NB group. The animals were euthanized 15 and 45 days, respectively, after the implant placement. Biomechanical (removal torque), microtomographic (volume of mineralized tissues around the implants), and histomorphometric (Bone-Implant contact-%BIC and bone area between the implant threads-%BBT) analyzes were conducted to assess the osseointegration process. The HA/TCP group showed lower values of removal torque, volume of mineralized tissue around the implants, lower %BIC, and %BBT compared to the NB group in both experimental periods. Osseointegration of implants placed in grafted areas with HA/TCP was lower compared to the osseointegration observed in native bone areas.

Abstract
The present case series aimed to evaluate the use of a Digital Smile Design (DSD) and mock-up technique for esthetic crown lengthening (ECL) surgery in six clinical cases with a 2-year follow-up. Six nonsmoker patients (five females, one male; aged 22 to 32 years), periodontally and systemically healthy, with inadequate tooth width/height ratio proportions associated with a gingival misalignment in the anterior maxilla were included. The DSDs were created using PowerPoint for all patients to evaluate gingival level and tooth form/contour. A wax-up and mock-up were created based on the DSD measurements. ECL surgeries were performed in all cases using the mock-up technique to determine the final gingival margin position and the amount of bone resection needed. A mock-up to bone crest distance of 3 mm was obtained in all cases. Using patient photographs, comparisons were made between the dental crown length (DCL) measurements obtained before the surgical procedure (baseline; T0), on the DSD template immediately postoperatively (IPO; T1), and at the 2-year follow-up (T2). A DCL augmentation of 1.16 ± 0.68 mm was obtained at T1, with an augmentation of 1.03 ± 0.73 mm at T2. Moreover, a minimal difference of 0.34 ± 0.74 mm between the DCL planned in the DSD template and the DCL obtained IPO was observed. In conclusion, the ECL procedure based on the DSD concept and mock-up technique proposed in this cases series was a predictable protocol for smile disharmony treatment in all the patients.

Abstract
Abstract This study evaluated osseointegration in areas grafted with deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) and biphasic ceramic based on hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate (HA/TCP) in rat tibias. Noncritical bone defects were made in the tibias of 28 rats that were randomly assigned to 2 groups: DBB: DBB-filled defects and HA/TCP: HA/TCP-filled defects. Bone defects were made in the tibias bilaterally and filled with biomaterials. After 60 days, the implants were inserted, and the animals were euthanized 15 and 45 days after the implants were installed. Osseointegration was evaluated by biomechanical, microtomographic and histometric analysis. Implants installed in the defects filled with DBB presented higher removal torque forces (2.33 ± 0.51 Ncm vs. 1.50 ± 0.54 Ncm) and mineralized tissue volume around implants at 15 days (34.96 ± 3.68 % vs. 25.61 ± 2.95 %) and greater bone-implant contact (20.87 ± 8.28 % vs. 11.52 ± 7.42 %) and bone area within implant threads (26.83 ± 12.35 % vs. 11.98 ± 7.56 %) at 45 days compared to the measurements of implants in areas grafted with HA/TCP. Implants installed in defects in areas grafted with DBB had a better osseointegration pattern than implants placed in defects in areas grafted with HA/TCP.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this split-mouth randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the primary and secondary stability of implants with hydrophilic surfaces in comparison to implants with conventional surfaces in the posterior region of the maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty patients with a bilateral edentulous ridge in the posterior area of the maxilla randomly received implants with two types of surfaces: (1) implants with the surface modified by double acid-etching and sandblasting (DAS, n = 20); and (2) implants with the surface modified by double acid-etching and sandblasting, stored in 0.9% saline solution to confer highly hydrophilic properties (DAS-H, n = 20) on the surface. The implants presented the same macrostructure with a hybrid design. The resonance frequency analysis was performed in order to obtain the implant stability quotient (ISQ) using Osstell. The ISQ analyses were performed just after placement of the implant (primary stability) and at 28, 40, and 90 days after the surgical procedure (secondary stability). RESULTS There were no differences between the DAS and DAS-H surfaces in the primary stability or during the conversion of the primary to the secondary stability; however, there was a reduction in the stability of the implants at 28 days, which increased significantly at 40 and 90 days in both surfaces. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that the surface wettability of implants with a hybrid macrostructure did not increase the primary and secondary implant stability in the posterior region of the maxilla.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of different protocols of low-level intensity laser therapy (LLLT) irradiation on the osseointegration of implants placed in grafted areas. METHODOLOGY 84 rats were randomly allocated into six groups: DBB: defect filled with deproteinized bovine bone; HA/TCP: defect filled with biphasic ceramic of hydroxyapatite/β-tricalcium phosphate ; DBB-LI: defect filled with DBB and treated with LLLT after implant placement; HA/TCP-LI: defect filled with HA/TCP and treated with LLLT after implant placement; DBB-LIB: defect filled with DBB and treated with LLLT after graft procedure and implant placement; and HA/TCP-LIB: defect filled HA/TCP and treated with LLLT after graft procedure and implant placement. The bone defects were made in the tibia and they were grafted. After 60 days, the implants were placed. The rats were subsequently subjected to euthanasia 15 and 45 days after implant placement. The pattern of osseointegration and bone repair in the grafted area was evaluated by biomechanical, microtomographic, and histometric analyses. Furthermore, the expression of bone biomarker proteins was assessed. RESULTS The LLLT groups presented higher removal torque, mineralized tissue volume, and a greater degree of osseointegration, especially when LLLT was performed only after implant placement, and these findings were associated with higher expression of BMP2 and alkaline phosphatase. CONCLUSION LLLT performed on implants placed in grafted areas enhances the osseointegration process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the influence of two different implant surfaces on osseointegration in maxillary sinuses of rabbits previously grafted with deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) associated or not with fresh bone marrow (BM). MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixteen New Zealand albino rabbits (males, 3.5/4.5 kg and 9-12 months old) were randomly divided into two groups with 8 rabbits each, according to the type of association of biomaterials used to fill the animals' maxillary sinuses: DBB (Deproteinized Bovine Bone) and DBB/BM (Deproteinized bovine bone associated with fresh autologous bone marrow). Ninety (90) days following the grafting procedure, the animals received implants in the area with two different microstructures (SA-Sandblasting + acid attack and SA-H-Sandblasting + acid attack + immersion in 0.9% sodium chloride isotonic solution). All rabbits were euthanized 90 days after implant placement. The microtomographic analysis was performed to verify the number of mineralized tissues around the implants throughout their length (%BV/TV), while the histomorphometric analysis was performed to verify the percentage of bone-implant contact around the implants throughout their length (%BIC). RESULTS We observed no differences in the quantity for %BV/TV (DBB-SA:33.25 ± 19.67; DBB-SA-H:35.15 ± 22.17; DBB/BM-SA:39.71 ± 24.21; DBB/BM-SA-H:36.40 ± 23.07) and %BIC (DBB-SA:58.94 ± 24.37; DBB-SA-H:52.52 ± 24.36; DBB/BM-SA: 61.66 ± 14.60; DBB/BM-SA-H: 64.06 ± 23.30) between the groups assessed. CONCLUSIONS The addition of BM and the type of surface did not influence the osseointegration of implants installed in areas grafted with sintered deproteinized bovine bone at high temperatures in the late period assessed.

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the effect of manual (M), electric (E) and ultrasonic (US) toothbrushes on the removal of oral biofilm and control of gingivitis. Also, the roughness and tooth wear production were evaluated in vitro. Methods: For the in vitro analyses, thirty bovine dentin specimens were submitted to a 3-month brushing simulation (9 minutes) with the three types of toothbrushes (n = 10). Subsequently, a randomized controlled clinical trial was performed with 36 patients divided into 3 groups according to the toothbrushes used (n = 12). Gingival index, visible plaque index and the volume of crevicular fluid were evaluated at baseline and 3 months after the beginning of the toothbrush use. Furthermore, the performance of the biofilm removal per brushing cycle of 1 and 3 minutes with each toothbrush was made monthly until the end of the experiment. Results: The US group had the highest dentin wear. Clinically, the US group had a lower plaque index at 3 months than the M group. The M group also showed less biofilm removal efficiency from the second month of follow-up and more worn bristles at the end of the 3 month period than the E and US groups. Conclusion: The ultrasonic, electric and manual toothbrushes showed no differences in gingivitis control in the present study. The ultrasonic and electric toothbrushes had a more significant effect on biofilm removal than a manual toothbrush, but the ultrasonic toothbrush promoted greater dentin tissue wear.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this preclinical study was to evaluate the healing of critical-sized defects (CSDs) in the calvarial bone of rats grafted with deproteinized bovine bone graft (DBB) and with a combination of hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and bisphosphonate treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-four animals were randomly divided into 2 groups according to the type of solution administered: the control group (CTR, saline solution) and the test group (alendronate [ALD]; sodium alendronate-50 μg/kg/day). Medications were administered via oral gavage starting 15 days before the surgical procedure until the end of the experiment. A CSD (5 mm in diameter) was made in the calvaria of each animal, and the rats were randomly allocated to 3 subgroups according to the biomaterial used to fill the defect: coagulum, DBB, and HA/TCP. The animals were sacrificed 15 and 60 days after the surgical procedure (n = 7 animals/period/subgroup). Microcomputed tomography was used to evaluate the percentage of mineralized tissues (volume). The amount of newly formed bone and remaining bone substitute material in the calvaria were analyzed by histomorphometry. RESULTS There were no differences between the CTR and ALD groups with regard to the volume of mineralized tissues. The DBB and HA/TCP subgroups of CTR animals presented a significant increase in newly formed bone compared with these subgroups of ALD animals after 60 days of healing. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, our findings indicate that the use of oral ALD reduced bone formation in CSD in the calvaria of rats grafted with DBB and HA/TCP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate graft remodelling according to the distance from the native bone in maxillary sinuses grafted with anorganic bovine bone (ABB). MATERIAL AND METHODS Bilateral sinus grafting was performed in twenty patients with residual bone height <5 mm before implant placement. After 8 months, biopsy samples were harvested, and histomorphometric analysis was performed to examine bone formation according to the distance (in mm) from the native bone (sinus floor). In the grafted area, the percentages of new bone (NB), residual graft material (rABB), and soft tissue (ST) were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 103 biopsy samples were evaluated, and the percentages of NB, rABB, and ST were 31.62 ± 9.85%, 18.94 ± 7.88%, and 49.41 ± 9.52%, respectively, in the 1st mm; 27.15 ± 9.83%, 23.33 ± 9.45%, and 49.53 ± 11.73%, respectively, in the 2nd mm; 23.61 ± 13.02%, 21.35 ± 11.08%, and 55.03 ± 16.14%, respectively, in the 3rd mm; and 21.67 ± 12.29%, 19.67 ± 10.28%, and 58.66 ± 12.46%, respectively, in the 4th mm. The 1st millimetre of the grafted area (closer to the native bone) presented a larger amount of NB than the other portions of the grafted areas and a smaller amount of rABB than the 2nd mm of the grafted area (p < .05). The amount of ST was larger in the 3rd and 4th mm of the grafted area than in the first 2 millimetres (p < .05). CONCLUSION The distance from the native bone influences bone formation following maxillary sinus augmentation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alternative antibacterial therapeutic modalities, such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT), have been proposed to improve the effectiveness of periodontal treatment. However, clinical studies evaluating the efficiency of these treatments have been inconclusive, partly due to contradictory results regarding their clinical and microbiological effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effects of aPDT and LLLT after a one-stage full-mouth disinfection (OSFMD) protocol during periodontitis treatment. METHODS A split-mouth clinical trial was conducted in 20 patients presenting at least two contralateral teeth with a probing pocket depth (PD) ≥ 5 mm and bleeding on probing (BOP) on both sides of the mouth. All patients were submitted to an OSFMD protocol. The selected sites randomly received either (1) aPDT (methylene blue as a photosensitizer activated by red and infrared diode laser) or (2) LLLT (red and infrared diode laser). Clinical parameters were assessed at baseline and at 4 and 12 weeks post-treatment. RESULTS Both treatment protocols promoted significant reductions in PD, number of deep pockets and BOP and an increase in clinical attachment level (CAL) after 4 and 12 weeks, but there were no differences between the two groups. There was no change in the gingival level (GL) of either group for all periods of analysis. A decrease in the number of moderate pockets (4-5 mm) was found in the LLLT group (5.15 ± 4.20) when compared to the aPDT group (7.10 ± 5.24), but only after 4 weeks. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, both the aPDT and LLLT therapies promoted improvements in periodontal clinical parameters after the OSFMD protocol; however, in general, there were no distinct differences between the two treatment modalities evaluated in this study.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the primary stability and the osseointegration process in implants with different macrostructures (Cylindrical vs. Hybrid Conical) in rabbit tibiae. Twenty-four (24) rabbits were used, divided into 3 experimental periods (2, 4 and 8 weeks) with 8 animals each. Each animal bilaterally received 2 implants from each group in the tibial metaphysis: Cylindrical Implant (CI) and Hybrid Conical Implant (HCI). All implants were assessed for insertion torque. After the experimental periods, one of the implants in each group was submitted to the removal counter-torque test and descriptive histological analysis while the other implant was used for microtomographic and histometric analysis (%Bone-Implant Contact). HCI implants showed higher insertion torque (32.93 ± 10.61 Ncm vs. 27.99 ± 7.80 Ncm) and higher % of bone-implant contact in the 8-week period (79.08 ± 11.31% vs. 59.72 ± 11.29%) than CI implants. However, CI implants showed higher values of removal counter-torque than HCI implants in the 8-week period (91.05 ± 9.32 Ncm vs. 68.62 ± 13.70 Ncm). There were no differences between groups regarding microtomographic data. It can be concluded that HCI implants showed greater insertion torque and bone-implant contact in relation to CI implants in the period of 8 weeks when installed in cortical bone of rabbits.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the local effect of simvastatin (SVT) combined with deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) with hydroxyapatite/β-tricalcium phosphate biphasic ceramics (HA/TCP) and with collagen sponge (CS) on bone repair in critical size defects (CSDs) in rat calvaria. Methods Forty-two 5-mm diameter CSDs were made bilaterally in the calvaria of 18 rats. The animals were allocated according to the type of biomaterial and associations used to fill the CSD. After 8 weeks, the animals were euthanized, and their calvaria were evaluated for repaired tissue composition using histologic and histometric analyses. Results In the histometric analysis, the use of SVT showed to increase bone formation in the CSDs when combined with all the bone substitutes tested in this study (p<0.05). Greater bone formation was observed in the groups with SVT compared to the groups without SVT. Conclusions The use of SVT without the need for a vehicle and combined with a commercially available biomaterial may be a cheaper way to potentiate the formation of bone tissue without the need to produce new biomaterials. Therefore, SVT combined with DBB induced significantly greater new bone formation than did the other treatments.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of cyclosporine administration on the repair of critical-sized calvaria defects (CSDs) in rat calvaria filled with diverse biomaterials. Sixty animals were divided into two groups: the control (CTR) group (saline solution) and the cyclosporine (CCP) group (cyclosporine, 10 mg/kg/day). These medications were administered daily by gavage, beginning 15 days before the surgical procedure and lasting until the day the animals were euthanized. A CSD (5 mm Ø) was made in the calvaria of each animal, which was allocated to one of 3 subgroups, according to the biomaterial used to fill the defect: coagulum (COA), deproteinized bovine bone (DBB), or biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics of hydroxyapatite and β-phosphate tricalcium (HA/TCP). Euthanasia of the animals was performed 15 and 60 days after the surgical procedure (n = 5 animals/period/subgroup). Bone repair (formation) assessment was performed through microtomography and histometry, while the analyses of the expression of the BMP2, Osteocalcin, and TGFβ1 proteins were performed using immunohistochemistry. The CSDs not filled with biomaterials demonstrated lower bone formation in the CCP group. At 15 days, less bone formation was observed in the CSDs filled with DBB, a smaller volume of mineralized tissue was observed in the CSDs filled with HA/TCP, and the expression levels of BMP2 and osteocalcin were lower in the CCP group compared to the CTR group. The use of cyclosporine impaired bone repair in CSD, and this effect can be partially explained by the suppression of BMP2 and osteocalcin expression.

Abstract
Soft tissue defects around dental implants, such as papilla or volume loss, peri-implant recession and alterations of the ridge color and/or texture, lead to esthetic and functional complaints. Treatments of these defects in implants are more demanding than in teeth because peri-implant tissue exhibits different anatomical and histological characteristics. This narrative review discusses the proposed treatments for soft tissue defects around implants in the current literature. Several clinical and pre-clinical studies addressed methods to augment the quantity of the peri-implant keratinized mucosa. Autogenous grafts performed better than soft tissue substitutes in the treatment of soft tissue defects, but there is no clinical consensus on the more appropriate donor area for connective tissue grafts. Treatment for facial volume loss, alterations on the mucosa color or texture and shallow peri-implant recessions are more predictable than deep recessions and sites that present loss of papilla. Correction of peri-implant soft tissue defects may be challenging, especially in areas that exhibit larger defects and interproximal loss. Therefore, the regeneration of soft and hard tissues during implant treatment is important to prevent the occurrence of these alterations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effect of avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) on periodontal repair in rats with induced periodontitis and arthritis. METHODOLOGY Forty-five rats were submitted to periodontitis induction by insertion of ligatures into the upper second molars, maintained for 15 days. These animals were randomly allocated to 3 groups according to the presence of induced arthritis (ART) and the application of the ASU: Control (CTR) group-healthy animals, where saline solution was administered; ART-animals with induced arthritis, where saline solution was administered; ART/ASU-animals with induced arthritis, where ASU (0.6 mg/ kg) was administered. The drugs were administered daily by gavage and the animals were euthanized after 7, 15 and 30 days of the ligature removal. Bone resorption, inflammatory infiltrate composition and marker proteins expression of the differentiation and formation of osteoclasts (RANKL and TRAP) were assessed. RESULTS The ART/ASU group presented higher bone volume than the ART group at 7 and 30 days after the ligature removal. Furthermore, the ART group presented higher quantity of inflammatory cells and expression of TRAP and RANKL than the other groups. CONCLUSION ASU administration improves the repair of periodontal tissues in an experimental periodontitis model in rats with induced arthritis.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of the Er,Cr:YSGG laser on healing of critical-sized calvarial defects (CSDs) in rats submitted to inhalation of cigarette smoke. Background: Smoking has been implicated with the delay in the bone healing after osteotomy procedures, then the use of the Er,Cr:YSGG laser for osteotomy in smokers could be an alternative to the conventional drills. Methods: One hundred animals were randomly allocated into four groups: trephine-the CSDs were made with a trephine drill in healthy rats; Er,Cr:YSGG-the CSDs were made with the Er,Cr:YSGG laser in healthy rats; Trephine-S-the CSDs were made with a trephine drill in rats exposed to cigarette smoke; and Er,Cr:YSGG-S-the CSDs were made with the Er,Cr:YSGG laser in rats exposed to cigarette smoke. The inhalation of cigarette smoke started 7 days before the surgical procedure until euthanasia (immediately, 7, 15, 30, or 60 days after the surgical procedure). A histometric analysis and a histological description were performed to evaluate (1) the residual linear lengths and bone formation in the CSDs; (2) the quality of bone healing. Results: The use of Er,Cr:YSGG laser induces more bone formation compared with the trephine in smokers; however, the closure of the CSD was only superior in the Er,Cr:YSGG-S group compared to the Trephine-S group at the 60-day period. Conclusions: The use of the Er,Cr:YSGG laser stimulated the bone repair process after osteotomy procedures in animals submitted to exposure of inhalation of cigarette smoke.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the linear and angular deviations of the implants installed by the computerized tomography (CT)-guided surgery technique. Eighteen patients who underwent implant insertion by means of CT-guided surgery participated in this study. Ten of these patients had a fully edentulous maxilla, and 8 had a fully edentulous mandible. The patients received a total of 115 implants, of which 81 implants were installed in the maxilla and 34 installed in the mandible. Tomographic guides were made for tomographic examination in both the upper and lower jaws. After the image acquisition, the virtual planning of the positioning of the implants was performed in relation to the previously made prosthesis. The measurement of the linear and angular deviations between the virtual planning and the final position of the implants was performed with the overlap of the planning and postoperative tomography. There were no differences in the linear and angular deviations of the implants installed in the maxilla and mandible. Compared with the coronal region, there was a trend of greater linear deviations in the apical regions of the implants and a greater tendency toward deviations in the posterior regions than in the anterior regions of both arches. The CT-guided surgery promoted the installation of implants with high accuracy and allowed the installation of straight pillars in all cases evaluated. The linear deviations were not different in the different regions of the mouth or in the different portions of the implants.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study presents a semiautomatic device developed to perform in vitro experiments using surgical drills for assisting dental implant research. It was built to perform tests independent of human direct contact, and contains an adjustable toolholder for engaging different types of implant contra angle hand pieces, in which different drills can be adapted. The researcher is able to make a range of adjustments on the machine, such as controlling the drilling force and depth. MATERIALS AND METHODS The device was tested on samples of both synthetic and natural bone with type I density, and a sequence of drills selected to perform the perforations. Drilling time and perforation force exerted during drilling were evaluated, as both parameters are required to be standardized. RESULTS It was observed that the drilling performed using the device was uniform using both types of bone, although the drilling time for the synthetic bone was higher. All perforations were exactly on the spot previously determined, and without variations in drill angulations. The perforation force was higher for the lance pilot drill for both bone types, and the natural bone required a higher axial force than the synthetic bone. CONCLUSION Thus, we consider this device trustable to perform standardized analysis and provide accurate results. It can be used for tests performed in universities and companies that develop dental implant materials and products.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy of Clinpro XT in reducing dentin permeability and the stability of this effect after different acid challenges. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-five roots of extracted human third molars were used. From each tooth, one dentin specimen was prepared and connected to a fluid filtration system to measure the dentin permeability after each of the following steps: sample preparation; treatment with 37% phosphoric acid; application of Clinpro XT; three acid challenges. Specimens were randomly assigned to 5 groups (n = 13) according to the acidic solution applied: Coca-Cola, natural lemon juice, wine vinegar, white wine and Red Bull energy drink. An additional 10 third molars were used to evaluate the degree of occlusion of the dentinal tubules and the surface roughness. RESULTS Clinpro XT statistically significantly reduced dentin permeability after just a single application. No statistically significant increase in dentin permeability could be detected after three consecutive challenges. The application of Clinpro XT promotes the occlusion of dentinal tubules and reduces the surface roughness. CONCLUSION The Clinpro XT is effective in reducing dentin permeability. This effect persists even after acid challenges.

Abstract
The aim of this article was to evaluate 1 year after surgery a surgical protocol that included gingivectomy and an apically positioned flap plus osseous resective surgery to correct excessive gingival display (EGD) in patients with altered passive eruption (APE) of the maxillary anterior teeth. Six female patients aged 18 to 22 years were diagnosed with APE type 1B. Surgical crown lengthening with flap surgery and bone recontouring was performed to achieve the biologic width. Photographic images were analyzed to evaluate the stable improvement of crown length before the procedure (baseline), immediately after surgery (immediate postoperative), and at 3 and 12 months postsurgery. Moreover, a lip repositioning procedure was also performed in one case to complement the periodontal therapy. Compared with baseline, an increase of 1.6 mm in the mean tooth crown height was observed in the photographic analysis at 12 months. A minimal difference was observed between the mean tooth crown height immediate postoperative and at 12 months, which indicates stability of the gingival margin. In conclusion, the surgical protocol outlined in this article describing esthetic crown lengthening for the treatment of APE/gummy smile resulted in predictable outcomes and stability of the gingival margin 1 year after surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using the photosensitizer hypericin-glucamine in the progression of experimentally induced periodontal disease (PD) in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Subgingival ligatures were inserted around the upper second molars of 30 rats. After 7 days (Baseline), the animals were randomly distributed into 3 experimental (n = 5) groups: Hypericin-glucamine; LED (amber LED, 700 mA, 590 nm, 90 mW, 34.10 J/cm2); and aPDT (Hypericin-glucamine + LED). The treated hemimaxillae were randomly chosen. The periodontal disease progression was monitored without treatment interference in the opposite hemimaxillaes, which were used as the negative control of each animal. The euthanasia was programmed according to each experimental period, 7 or 15 days after the Baseline. Microtomographic, histometric and Tartrate Resistant Acid Phosphatase (TRAP) immunohistochemistry analyses were carried out. RESULTS Computerized microtomography analyses indicated that the aPDT group had a significantly higher percentage of bone tissue when compared to the other 7 days experimental groups. This result was corroborated by the histometric evaluations of the furcal area. The LED-treated group presented the highest percentages of bone volume for the 15 days experimental groups, which is remarkably higher than the groups treated with Hy-g and aPDT. The histometric analyses demonstrated the control groups had greater bone loss in the proximal regions when compared to the treated groups. The aPDT led to a lower osteoclast activity at both 7 and 15 days. Thus, we can conclude that aPDT exhibits positive effects in PD treatment by promoting favorable conditions for periodontal repair.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess whether the use of a non-crosslinked porcine collagen type I and III bi-layered membrane inter-positioned between the periosteum and a bone defect would interfere with the bone regenerative capacity of the periosteum. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty rats, each with 1 critical-size calvarial defect (CSD; diameter, 5 mm) in the parietal bone, were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 equal-size groups after CSD creation: 1) the periosteum was excised and the flap was repositioned without interposition of a membrane (no-periosteum [NP] group); 2) the flap including the periosteum was repositioned (periosteum [P] group); and 3) a non-crosslinked collagen membrane was inter-positioned between the flap, including the periosteum, and the bone defect (membrane [M] group). Micro-computed tomography, qualitative histology, immunohistochemistry, and reverse transcription real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction were performed at 3, 7, 15, and 30 days postoperatively. RESULTS A markedly increased radiographic residual defect length was observed in the NP group compared with the P group at 30 days. The NP group also presented a smaller radiographic bone fill area than the P group at 15 and 30 days and then the M group at 30 days. The P and M groups exhibited considerably greater expression of bone morphogenetic protein-2 and osteocalcin than the NP group at 7 days; expression of transforming growth factor-β1 was considerably greater in the NP group at 15 days. Further, the P group presented considerably higher gene expression levels of Runx2 and Jagged1 at 7 days and of alkaline phosphatase at 3 and 15 days compared with the M and NP groups. CONCLUSION Interposition of this specific non-crosslinked collagen membrane between the periosteum and the bone defect during guided bone regeneration interferes only slightly, if at all, with the bone regenerative capacity of the periosteum.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of the use of avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) on osseointegration of implants in animals with experimental arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred twenty rats were randomly divided into four groups: CTR, healthy animals and saline solution administration; ASU, healthy animals and ASU administration; ART, arthritic animals and saline solution administration; and ART/ASU, arthritic animals and ASU administration. The solutions were administered daily by gavage, beginning 7 days before the surgical procedures until the completion of the experimental period (15, 30, and 60 days after the placement of the implants in the tibia). The osseointegration of the implants was evaluated by histometric analysis (bone-to-implant contact [% BIC], bone area between the threads [% BBT]) and biomechanical analysis. Microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) analysis was used to assess bone volume in the vicinity of the implant. Immunohistochemistry analysis was performed to assess the expression of osteocalcin and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). RESULTS The ART/ASU group showed a decreased percentage of bone in the area around the implant compared with the ASU and ART groups (15 and 30 days). The ART/ASU group showed increased removal torque values (30 days) and % BIC and % BBT (30 to 60 days) compared with the ART group. The ASU group had increased % BIC values compared with the ART and CTR groups (60 days). The CTR group had the highest expression of osteocalcin, while the ASU group presented the highest expression of TGF-β1 at 60 days. CONCLUSION The ASU administration improved the osseointegration, particularly in animals with induced arthritis.

Abstract
This study aimed to characterize the dynamics of suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS1) expression in a rat model of lipopolysaccharide-induced periodontitis. Wistar rats in the experimental groups were injected three times/week with LPS from Escherichia coli on the palatal aspect of the first molars, and control animals were injected with vehicle (phosphate-buffered saline). Animals were sacrificed 7, 15, and 30 days after the first injection to analyze inflammation (stereometric analysis), bone loss (macroscopic analysis), gene expression (qRT-PCR), and protein expression/activation (Western blotting). The severity of inflammation and bone loss associated with LPS-induced periodontitis increased from day 7 to day 15, and it was sustained through day 30. Significant (p < 0.05) increases in SOCS1, RANKL, OPG, and IFN-γ gene expression were observed in the experimental group versus the control group at day 15. SOCS1 protein expression and STAT1 and NF-κB activation were increased throughout the 30-day experimental period. Gingival tissues affected by experimental periodontitis express SOCS1, indicating that this protein may potentially downregulate signaling events involved in inflammatory reactions and bone loss and thus may play a relevant role in the development and progression of periodontal disease.

Abstract
Aim: To perform a comparative analysis between two methods for detecting Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Porphyromonas endodontalis in periodontal plaque samples. Methods: The study sample consisted of twenty systemically healthy patients showing generalized chronic periodontitis. The subgingival samples for microbiological analysis were collected before (baseline) and 60 days after a basic periodontal therapy from 30 non-adjacent affected sites (Probing Depth (PD): 5-7 mm, Clinical Attachment Loss (CAL) ≥ 5 mm, positive for Bleeding on Probing (BOP)). Microbiological analysis was performed by PCR and qPCR. To allow a comparative analysis between both methods, qPCR was divided in three different scores (score 2: presence of more than 100 bacteria; score 1: presence of 10-100 bacteria, and score 0: absence of bacteria), in accordance to DNA quantity, while for PCR two scores were assigned: presence or absence of bacteria. Results: qPCR demonstrated higher sensitivity in the detection of these pathogens compared with PCR when scores 1 and 2 were considered positive. However, when only score 2 was considered positive, PCR and qPCR showed better agreement. Conclusions: qPCR demonstrated higher sensitivity than conventional PCR for detection of low numbers of microorganisms and can be useful for the quantification of periodontopathogens.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine which features of the bone microarchitecture are affected by established diabetes mellitus (DM) and the effectiveness of glycemic control in the protection of bone tissue. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty juvenile Wistar male rats were divided into three groups of 20 animals: a control group (C) that included healthy animals, a diabetic group (D) that included animals with induced diabetes, and a controlled diabetic group (CD) that included animals with induced diabetes that were treated with insulin. The animals were euthanized at the periods of 6 and 8 weeks after the induction of diabetes (10 animals per group/period). Vertebral L4 specimens were submitted to μCT analysis to assess the following parameters of the bone microarchitecture: bone volume fraction (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N), and trabecular spacing (Tb.Sp). RESULTS The D group exhibited lower values of BV/TV (%) and numbers of trabeculae compared with the C group at 6 and 8 weeks and compared with the CD group at 8 weeks. The CD group exhibited higher trabecular thickness values compared with the D group at 8 weeks. There were no differences between the groups regarding the spaces between the trabeculae. CONCLUSION Induced diabetes affected the microarchitecture of the trabecular bone of the vertebrae by reducing the values of the majority of the parameters in relation to those of the control group. Glycemic control with insulin appears to protect bones from the effects of the hyperglycemia.

Abstract
Abstract The aim of this study was to conduct a retrospective evaluation of the survival and success rates of dental implants with acid-etched surfaces after 8-10 years of function. Forty-four patients who received 183 implants 8-10 years ago were evaluated. Clinical examinations were performed around the implants and natural teeth. The following parameters were measured: visible plaque index (VPI), marginal bleeding index (MBI), probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP) and clinical attachment level (CAL). To considerer an implant as a success case, the following criteria were considered: absence of peri-implant infection and suppuration, absence of implant mobility, absence of persistent pain and dysesthesia and absence of radiolucency around the implant. Overall, 178 implants were categorized as surviving (97.3%), 155 were categorized as successful (84.7%), 5 implants (2.7%) were lost (1 in the maxilla and 4 in the mandible), and 3 implants were not under functional load (2.0 %). 20 implants were diagnosed with peri-implantitis. Thus, the survival rate was 97% and the success rate was 85%. In conclusion, implants with acid-etched surfaces showed high survival and success rates after a period of 8 to 10 years of function.
