[Case report: lymphosarcoma in a cow]

A case of sporadic lymphosarcoma in a cow is described. The animal showed a tumorous mass in the area of the right orbita accompanied by conjunctival oedema. Clinical investigation showed an enlargement of a number of internal and external lymph nodes. Haematological and clinicochemical investigations revealed no alterations besides a slight shift to the right in the white blood picture. Blood serum was negative for antibodies directed against bovine leucosis virus. Necropsy showed leucotic and tumorous alterations in a number of organs.

[Structures and possibilities of herd management on the example of respiratory enzootic infection of calves]

With the keeping of cattle in bigger herds problems arise, which require a modified veterinary approach. In stead of and in addition to the treatment of individual animals improvement of hygiene, intensification of prophylaxis, fast recognition (herd diagnostics) and interregional comparability have to be established. Beside the conventional field veterinarian, who is consulted on request primarily for the treatment of single animals, specialists in team practices as an alternative, permanently employed veterinarians or firm contracts with a health service up to integrated herd control are thinkable. The clarification and control of infectious diseases of the respiratory tract in cattle operations require an exact analysis of the environmental conditions and the identification of etiologic agents. Special attention has to be drawn to the evaluation of the barn climate and the respective taking of samples concerning the actual disease situation.

[Effect of antibody-containing egg powder on development of active immunity in calves]

Investigations on the influence of an egg powder containing antibodies was conducted on 15 young calves to measure the development of an active immune response. The product investigated, Globigen 88 (Lohmann Animal Health GmbH & Co. KG), was mixed with a milk replacer and administered to a group of 5 calves over 8 days twice a day. In addition, two control groups were established each consisting of 5 calves. The first group received the corresponding amount of egg powder without antibodies and the second group received exclusively milk replacer. In all groups serum antibody content was measured over 22 days. The average antibody content was decreased in the serum of the test groups. Avian immunoglobulins were not detectable. The development of active immunity in calves was not hindered. Furthermore a significant daily increase in weight was observed in test groups.

[Practice-oriented control of BVD virus infection in cattle herds]

The BVD-virus-infection is at present the economically most important disease of bovine animals. A control program requires to take into consideration the given epidemiological facts. Sufficient diagnostic examination procedures are available for estimation of the infection taking place in a herd. An effective preventive measure prior to the infection as well as the quick limitation of an already existing infection taking place consists in a consequent vaccination program. Pre-condition for the vaccination program is the attention to a strict indication of vaccines available, the detailed information of the animal owner as well as taking into consideration the cost-profit-proportion of the envisaged control measurements.

[Bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD)--a hereditary disease in cattle]

Bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD) is an autosomal recessive and lethal disease of Holstein-Friesian cattle. It is characterized by leukocytosis with more than 30,000 cells/microliter blood and decreased resistance to infectious diseases. Details of the history and pathological findings in three patients, the situation in the herd and breeding aspects are described.

[Clinical indications of an auxiliary effect of antihistamines (parenteral benadryl) in the treatment of RSV infections of cattle]

The BRSV-infection belongs to the Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) complex. Because of its clinical features as well as pathomorphological and histopathological lesions it can be considered an independent disease. Therefore, concepts of treatment deviating from conventional BRD have to be applied. In addition to antibiotic therapy, therefore, the effect of treatment with the antihistamine Diphenylhydramin (Benadryl-parenteral, Parke Davis) was checked. For the evaluation the internal body temperature was used as measure. With the additional daily application of the antihistamine to the antibiotic therapy the animals were faster without fever. The difference was significant.

[Important virus infections of the respiratory tract in cattle from the clinical point of view]

The etiological participation of different viruses in the pneumonia complex of cattle is undisputed. The significance of the individual viruses in the genesis of disease symptoms is still mostly unclear. Since the pneumonia complex of cattle is a multifactorial syndrome, vaccination programs as the only measure of prophylaxis in most cases do not show the desired effect. Against those viral agents causing self-standing diseases of the respiratory tract, specific vaccinations are applicable with success. Prerequisite for their effectiveness, however, is the exact etiological clarification of the cause of disease or of the existing infections respectively in the herd. The frequency of possible viral agents in infections of the respiratory tract in cattle from herds of the province of Schleswig-Holstein found in routine diagnostic work during the last four years is presented in addition.

[Atypical interstitial pneumonia (AIP) in calves and young cattle in Schleswig-Holstein in conjunction with an infection by the bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV)]

It is reported on atypical interstitial pneumonia (AIP) in 16 mostly Holstein-Frisian calves and feeders from 13 different farms in Schleswig-Holstein in association with an infection by the respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV). All animals were submitted with identical clinical histories. Macroscopically the lung lesions were characterized by alveolar and interstitial edema and emphysema. Microscopically there was a diffuse interstitial pneumonia with formation of hyaline membranes and multinucleated giant cells. From the investigation material of the 16 animals BRSV was confirmed by direct immunofluorescence with monoclonal antibodies in 4 animals from 4 different farms.
