Abstract
Renal ciliopathies are a common cause of kidney failure in children and adults, and this study reviewed their ocular associations. Genes affected in renal ciliopathies were identified from the Genomics England Panels. Ocular associations were identified from Medline and OMIM, and the genes additionally examined for expression in the human retina ( https://www.proteinatlas.org/humanproteome/tissue ) and for an ocular phenotype in mouse models ( http://www.informatics.jax.org/ ). Eighty-two of the 86 pediatric-onset renal ciliopathies (95%) have an ocular phenotype, including inherited retinal degeneration, oculomotor disorders, and coloboma. Diseases associated with pathogenic variants in ANK6, MAPKBP1, NEK8, and TCTN1 have no reported ocular manifestations, as well as low retinal expression and no ocular features in mouse models. Ocular abnormalities are not associated with the most common adult-onset "cystic" kidney diseases, namely, autosomal dominant (AD) polycystic kidney disease and the AD tubulointerstitial kidney diseases (ADTKD). However, other kidney syndromes with cysts have ocular features including papillorenal syndrome (optic disc dysplasia), Hereditary Angiopathy Nephropathy, Aneurysms and muscle Cramps (HANAC) (tortuous retinal vessels), tuberous sclerosis (retinal hamartomas), von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (retinal hemangiomas), and Alport syndrome (lenticonus, fleck retinopathy). Ocular abnormalities are associated with many pediatric-onset renal ciliopathies but are uncommon in adult-onset cystic kidney disease. However the demonstration of ocular manifestations may be helpful diagnostically and the features may require monitoring or treatment.

Abstract
Genetic forms of focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) often have extra-renal manifestations. This study examined FSGS-associated genes from the Genomics England Renal proteinuria panel for reported and likely ocular features. Thirty-two of the 55 genes (58%) were associated with ocular abnormalities in human disease, and a further 12 (22%) were expressed in the retina or had an eye phenotype in mouse models. The commonest genes affected in congenital nephrotic syndrome (NPHS1, NPHS2, WT1, LAMB2, PAX2 but not PLCE1) may have ocular manifestations . Many genes affected in childhood-adolescent onset FSGS (NPHS1, NPHS2, WT1, LAMB2, SMARCAL1, NUP107 but not TRPC6 or PLCE1) have ocular features. The commonest genes affected in adult-onset FSGS (COL4A3-COL4A5, GLA ) have ocular abnormalities but not the other frequently affected genes (ACTN4, CD2AP, INF2, TRPC6). Common ocular associations of genetic FSGS include cataract, myopia, strabismus, ptosis and retinal atrophy. Mitochondrial forms of FSGS (MELAS, MIDD, Kearn's Sayre disease) are associated with retinal atrophy and inherited retinal degeneration. Some genetic kidney diseases (CAKUT, ciliopathies, tubulopathies) that result in secondary forms of FSGS also have ocular features. Ocular manifestations suggest a genetic basis for FSGS, often help identify the affected gene, and prompt genetic testing. In general, ocular abnormalities require early evaluation by an ophthalmologist, and sometimes, monitoring or treatment to improve vision or prevent visual loss from complications. In addition, the patient should be examined for other syndromic features and first degree family members assessed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The genetic tubulopathies are rare and heterogenous disorders that are often difficult to identify. This study examined the tubulopathy-causing genes for ocular associations that suggested their genetic basis and, in some cases, the affected gene. METHODS Sixty-seven genes from the Genomics England renal tubulopathy panel were reviewed for ocular features, and for retinal expression in the Human Protein Atlas and an ocular phenotype in mouse models in the Mouse Genome Informatics database. The genes resulted in disease affecting the proximal tubules (n = 24); the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (n = 10); the distal convoluted tubule (n = 15); or the collecting duct (n = 18). RESULTS Twenty-five of the tubulopathy-associated genes (37%) had ocular features reported in human disease, 49 (73%) were expressed in the retina, although often at low levels, and 16 (24%) of the corresponding mouse models had an ocular phenotype. Ocular abnormalities were more common in genes affected in the proximal tubulopathies (17/24, 71%) than elsewhere (7/43, 16%). They included structural features (coloboma, microphthalmia); refractive errors (myopia, astigmatism); crystal deposition (in oxalosis, cystinosis) and sclerochoroidal calcification (in Bartter, Gitelman syndromes). Retinal atrophy was common in the mitochondrial-associated tubulopathies. Structural abnormalities and crystal deposition were present from childhood, but sclerochoroidal calcification typically occurred after middle age. CONCLUSIONS Ocular abnormalities are uncommon in the genetic tubulopathies but may be helpful in recognizing the underlying genetic disease. The retinal expression and mouse phenotype data suggest that further ocular associations may become apparent with additional reports. Early identification may be necessary to monitor and treat visual complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pierson syndrome and X-linked Alport syndrome result from pathogenic variants in LAMB2 and COL4A5, respectively, and both affect basement membranes in the kidney and the eye. This study describes the ocular features in an individual with a homozygous LAMB2 pathogenic variant and compares the reported abnormalities in Pierson syndrome with those in Alport syndrome. METHODS A 28-year-old man who developed kidney failure 10 years previously and subsequently had an atrial septal defect repair was suspected of having genetic kidney disease on the basis of his likely diagnosis of Focal and Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), his young age at presentation, and his cardiac anomaly. He then underwent Whole Exome Sequencing and a formal ophthalmological examination. RESULTS The patient was found to have a homozygous Likely Pathogenic missense variant (p.(Arg1719Cys)) in LAMB2 consistent with the diagnosis of Pierson syndrome. He had normal visual acuity, normal optic globe and cornea size, and normal lens appearance on direct examination. Upon further testing, his cornea demonstrated central thinning. There was also increased corneal endothelial pleomorphism, a reduced foveal reflex, and a blunted foveal curvature, similar to the features seen in X-linked Alport syndrome. CONCLUSION Our patient had a later onset form of Pierson syndrome or "FSGS type 5, with or without ocular abnormalities," consistent with his "milder" LAMB2 missense variant. The resemblance of the ocular features in Pierson syndrome and X-linked Alport syndrome suggests that mutations in LAMB2 and COL4A5 have similar effects on basement membranes and the pathogenesis of ocular damage.

Abstract
Drusen are retinal deposits comprising cell debris, immune material and complement that are characteristic of macular degeneration but also found in glomerulonephritis. This was a pilot cross-sectional study to determine how often drusen occurred in IgA glomerulonephritis and their clinical significance. Study participants underwent non-mydriatic retinal photography, and their deidentified retinal images were examined for drusen by two trained graders, who compared central drusen counts, counts ≥ 10 and drusen size with those of matched controls. The cohort comprised 122 individuals with IgA glomerulonephritis including 89 males (73%), 49 individuals (40%) of East Asian or Southern European ancestry, with an overall median age of 54 years (34-64), and median disease duration of 9 years (4-17). Thirty-nine (33%) had an eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 and 72 had previously reached kidney failure (61%). Overall mean drusen counts were higher in IgA glomerulonephritis (9 ± 27) than controls (2 ± 7, p < 0.001). Central counts ≥ 10 were also more common (OR = 3.31 (1.42-7.73, p = 0.006), and were associated with longer disease duration (p = 0.03) but not kidney failure (p = 0.31). Larger drusen were associated with more mesangial IgA staining (p = 0.004). Increased drusen counts were also present in IgA glomerulonephritis secondary to Crohn's disease but not with Henoch-Schonlein purpura. The finding of retinal drusen in IgA glomerulonephritis is consistent with complement activation and represents a model for better understanding glomerular immune deposition and a supporting argument for treatment with anti-complement therapies.

Abstract
Introduction Complement has been implicated in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) pathogenesis on the basis of the associations with inherited complement defects and genome-wide association study risk alleles, glomerular deposits, reduced serum levels, and occasional reports of retinal drusen. This study examined drusen in SLE and their clinical significance. Methods This cross-sectional observational study compared individuals with SLE recruited from renal and rheumatology clinics with hospital controls. Participants were reviewed for clinical features and underwent imaging with a nonmydriatic retinal camera. Deidentified images were examined by 2 trained graders for drusen number and size using a grid overlay. Results The cohort with SLE (n = 65) comprised 55 women (85%) and 10 men (15%) with a median age of 47 years (interquartile range 35–59), where 23 (35%) were of southern European or Asian ancestry, and 32 (49%) had biopsy-proven lupus nephritis. Individuals with SLE had higher mean drusen numbers than controls (27 ± 60, 3 ± 9, respectively, P = 0.001), more drusen counts ≥10 (31, 48% and 3, 5%, respectively, P < 0.001), and more medium-large drusen (14, 22% and 3, 5%, respectively, P < 0.001). In SLE, mean drusen counts were higher, and drusen were larger, with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <90 ml/min per 1.73 m2 (P = 0.02, P = 0.02, respectively) or class IV nephritis (P = 0.03, P = 0.02). Conclusion Drusen composition resembles that of glomerular immune deposits. CFH controls complement activation in the extracellular matrix and CFH risk variants are shared by drusen in macular degeneration and by SLE. CFH represents a possible treatment target for SLE especially with renal impairment.

Abstract
Gitelman syndrome is a rare inherited renal tubular disorder with features that resemble thiazide use, including a hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, hypomagnesemia, hypocalciuria and a low or normal blood pressure, hyperreninemia and hyperaldosteronism. Treatment is primarily correction of the potassium and magnesium levels. The diagnosis is confirmed with genetic testing but Gitelman syndrome is often not suspected. However, the association with ectopic calcification in the retina, blood vessels and chondrocalcinosis in the joints is a useful pointer to this diagnosis. Bilateral symmetrical whitish deposits of calcium pyrophosphate are visible superotemporally on ophthalmoscopy and retinal photography but are actually located beneath the retina in the sclerochoroid. Optical coherence tomography is even more sensitive for their detection. These deposits increase in size with time, but the rate of progression slows with long-term correction of the hypomagnesemia. Calcification may be complicated by atrophy of the overlying retina and visual loss. The deposits often correlate with ectopic calcification in the aorta and coronary and cerebral vessels. Chondrocalcinosis occurs in the large joints such as the knees. Ectopic calcification in Gitelman syndrome indicates the need for more aggressive management of Mg levels. Calcification is much less common in Bartter syndrome, which itself is rarer and associated less often with hypomagnesemia.

Abstract
Background: X-linked Alport syndrome results from the effect of COL4A5 mutations on basement membranes in the kidney, ear and eye. This study investigated individuals with X-linked Alport syndrome for corneal abnormalities.Patients and Methods: Six men and four women from 8 families with genetically-diagnosed X-linked Alport syndrome underwent ophthalmological examination including slit lamp examination and corneal endothelial specular microscopy. Results for corneal microscopy for men and women with X-linked disease were compared separately with the mean values for age- matched normals using the student's t test.Results: Five of the 6 men had end-stage kidney failure, all 6 had a hearing loss, three had lenticonus, and three had a central fleck retinopathy. Two men had a history of recurrent corneal erosions but no evidence of posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy. None of the four women had kidney failure, but two had a hearing loss, and two had a central fleck retinopathy. One woman, whose son had recurrent corneal erosions, also had erosions, but no features of a posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy.Corneal specular microscopy demonstrated abnormalities in affected men and women, with larger endothelial cells (p = .0001 in men, p = .004 in women) fewer 6-sided cells (p = .0001, p = .001 respectively) and reduced cell density (p = .03, p = .02 respectively) than normal.Conclusions: Recurrent corneal erosions are common in men and women with X-linked Alport syndrome, but posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy is rare. The abnormal corneal endothelial cells in affected men and women are consistent with an abnormal Descemet membrane, and the reduced cell density resembles the reduced podocyte numbers found in the Alport glomerulus.

Abstract
Objective:To determine whether visual perceptual measures in people who experience visual snow are consistent with an imbalance between inhibition and excitation in visual cortex.Methods:Sixteen patients with visual snow and 18 controls participated. Four visual tasks were included: center-surround contrast matching, luminance increment detection in noise, and global form and global motion coherence thresholds. Neuronal architecture capable of encoding the luminance and contrast stimuli is present within primary visual cortex, whereas the extraction of global motion and form signals requires extrastriate processing. All these tasks have been used previously to investigate the balance between inhibition and excitation within the visual system in both healthy and diseased states.Results:The visual snow group demonstrated reduced center-surround contrast suppression (p = 0.03) and elevated luminance increment thresholds in noise (p = 0.02). Groups did not differ on the global form or global motion task.Conclusion:Our study demonstrates that visual perceptual measures involving the suprathreshold processing of contrast and luminance are abnormal in a group of individuals with visual snow. Our data are consistent with elevated excitability in primary visual cortex; however, further research is required to provide more direct evidence for this proposed mechanism. The ability to measure perceptual differences in visual snow reveals promise for the future development of clinical tests to assist in visual snow diagnosis and possibly a method for quantitatively assaying any benefits of treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The retinal features of Alport syndrome include a central and peripheral fleck retinopathy, temporal retinal thinning, and a macular hole. Here we describe further retinal abnormalities. METHODS We identified a case of bull's eye maculopathy 20 years previously in a 68-year-old female, and reviewed archived retinal images from our cohort of X-linked (28 males, 28 females) or autosomal recessive (n = 13) Alport syndrome. All individuals had Alport syndrome confirmed on genetic testing or renal biopsy, were examined by an ophthalmologist, and underwent retinal imaging (KOWA non-mydriatic camera, Japan). RESULTS The index case had the p.Q379X variant in COL4A5 and currently had renal impairment, (eGFR = 45 ml/min/1.73 m2), bilateral hearing loss, and central and peripheral retinopathies. Her maculopathy had deteriorated, and she had a bilateral central visual field loss. Optical coherence tomography (Heidelberg Spectralis) demonstrated a disrupted retinal pigment epithelium and retinal atrophy. We identified a further early bull's eye maculopathy (1/69, 1.4%) from a female with autosomal recessive disease and normal renal function. We also noted a subtle pigment maculopathy associated with an abnormal retinal pigment epithelium in 27 (27/69, 39%) subjects with Alport syndrome, in both males (8/28, 29%) and females (13/28, 46%) with X-linked disease, and in autosomal recessive disease (6/13, 38%). CONCLUSIONS The bull's eye and pigment maculopathies in Alport syndrome result mainly from the damaged Bruch's membrane and overlying retinal pigment epithelium. Bull's eye maculopathy affects vision and patients should undergo regular monitoring for retinal complications.

Abstract
It is now a full decade since Paylor and Orgel (2004) called for social work to 'wake up' to hepatitis C (HCV). In that time, a small but significant body of social research has developed which has highlighted the far-reaching social consequences of living with HCV. Using this as a foundation, Paylor and Mack (2010) expanded arguments on the role of social work and identified specific areas where social work might become involved, arguing that the profession is uniquely placed and skilled, to respond and provide support. This article draws on qualitative in-depth interviews with twenty-one people who (had) lived with HCV in the UK, to strengthen and broaden the argument that social work and social care need to urgently take a bigger role in working with people with HCV, given the cross-cutting and wide range of issues that arise. This is the first study which uses participant data to argue for the need for social work involvement and in that it highlights a number of points in the experience where social work support is needed including pre and post diagnosis, whilst on treatment and after treatment.

Abstract
Background In humans it has been reported that a major site of the latent reservoir of HIV is within CD4+ T cells expressing the memory marker CD45RO, defined by the mAb UCHL1. There are conflicting reports regarding the expression of this antigen in macaques, the most relevant animal species for studying HIV pathogenesis and testing new therapies. There is now a major effort to eradicate HIV reservoirs and cure the infection. One approach is to eliminate subsets of cells housing the latent reservoir, using UCHL1 to target these cells. So that such studies may be performed in macaques, it is essential to determine expression of CD45RO. Methods We have used immunofluorescence and flow cytometry to study cell surface expression of CD45RO on lymphocytes from PBMC, lymphoid, and GI organs of rhesus, pigtailed, and cynomolgus macaques. Both direct and indirect immunofluorescence experiments were performed. Findings CD45RO is expressed on a subset of CD4+ lymphocytes of all pigtailed, a fraction of rhesus, and neither of the cynomolgus macaques studied. The binding of UCHL1 to macaque cells was of lower avidity than to human cells. This could be overcome by forming UCHL1 multimers. Directly conjugating fluors to UCHL1 can inhibit UCHL1 binding to macaque cells. Patterns of UCHL1 expression differ somewhat in macaques and humans, and from that of other memory markers often used in macaques. Conclusions CD45RO, defined with mAb UCHL1, is well expressed on CD4+ cells in pigtailed macaques. Using tissues recovered from latently infected pigtailed macaques we are determining whether UCHL1, or other memory markers, can define the cellular locus of the reservoir. The low avidity of this interaction could limit the utility of UCHL1, in its conventional form, to eliminate cells in vivo and test this approach in macaque models of HIV infection.

Abstract
AIMS To screen tuatara undergoing translocation from a captive crèche to an island refuge for evidence of health and known diseases, and apply basic epidemiological techniques to assess the significance of disease test results. METHODS Tuatara (n=353) were physically examined and samples were taken from a random selection (n=30) for estimated white cell counts, screening for haemoparasites, and culture for Salmonella, Yersinia, Aeromonas and Campylobacter spp. Direct faecal smears were carried out on-site, and faecal floats were later performed to assess levels of endoparasitism with helminths and protozoa (n=69). Modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining was used to screen faecal smears, and positive specimens were further screened using an immunofluorescence antibody (IFA) test for Cryptosporidium oocysts. RESULTS There was no evidence of external parasites on any of the animals examined and only one animal had a gross abnormality. All estimated white cell counts were in the range 2.8- 17.5 x 10(9)/L. No haemoparasites were observed. There were no enteric pathogens cultured, indicating the intestinal carriage of these bacteria in the tuatara was <9.4%. Of the 69 individual faecal samples examined, 12 (17%) had unidentified coccidial oocysts, 21 (30%) had nematode ova of various kinds, and 12 (17%) had intestinal carriage of motile protozoa consistent with Trichomonas spp and another unidentified organism. Nineteen (28%) tuatara had acid-fast oocysts present; however, IFA staining failed to detect any Cryptosporidium oocysts. CONCLUSIONS Our understanding of the diversity of gastrointestinal endoparasites affecting tuatara is inadequate as many of the parasite ova seen could not be identified. This is the first record of tuatara as a host for Trichomonas spp of protozoa in the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
The present study aimed at researching the synergistic effect between an ectopic bone substitute and surrounding muscle tissue. To describe this effect, changes of insulin like growth factors (IGF1, IGF2), myostatin (GDF8) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA content of 12 Wistar-King rats musculus latissimus dorsi with implanted poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) scaffold were examined after 6 and 12 weeks. At each time interval six rats were killed and implants and surrounding tissues prepared for genetic evaluation. Eight rats without any implants served as controls. RNA was extracted from homogenized muscle tissue and reverse transcribed. Changes in mRNA content were measured by Real-Time PCR using specific primers for IGF1, IGF2, GDF8 and VEGF. Comparing the level of VEGF mRNA in muscle after 6 and 12 weeks to the controls, we could assess a significant increase of VEGF gene expression (p<0.05) whereas the level of mRNA expression was higher after 6 than after 12 weeks of treatment. Expression of IGF1 gene was also significantly increased as compared to the controls over the observed period of time (p<0.05). In the case of the IGF2 gene, the expression was significantly elevated after 6 weeks (p<0.05), but not significantly increased after 12 weeks (p>0.05). We observed a significantly decreased GDF8 gene expression (p<0.05) both after retrieval of implants after 6 as well as after 12 weeks. Moreover, mRNA level of GDF8 after 6 and 12 weeks were comparable the same. Our results show that PHB implants in rat musculus latissimus dorsi interact with the surrounding muscle tissue. This interaction works itself on growth potential of the muscle.

Abstract
This paper describes the effect of a disease outbreak on the success of a translocation for conservation management in a critically endangered species. Three juvenile kakapo from a group of 19 translocated birds died within 72 h of transport between New Zealand offshore islands. Clinical findings, gross necropsy changes, cytology, histopathology and bacterial culture confirmed systemic disease caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. On the island from which the kakapo were sourced, positive cultures of E. rhusiopathiae were obtained from the medulla of the ulna from 10 out of 15 seabird carcasses examined, suggesting that this could be the source of infection for the kakapo. Immediately after the diagnosis, all of the translocated birds were re-captured and treated with antibiotics. A vaccination programme has commenced using a commercial killed bacterin developed for turkeys. The disease outbreak has had costly implications for the population and conservation management of the species. This is the first report of erysipelas in wild parrots, and the first report of the management of erysipelas in a critically endangered wild population of birds.

Abstract
We present an operational definition of the Wigner function. Our method relies on the Fresnel transform of measured Rabi oscillations and applies to motional states of trapped atoms as well as to field states in cavities. We illustrate this technique using data from recent experiments in ion traps [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1796 (1996)]] and in cavity QED [Nature (London) 403, 743 (2000)]]. The values of the Wigner functions of the underlying states at the origin of phase space are W(|0>)(0)=+1.75 for the vibrational ground state and W(|1>)(0)=-1.4 for the one-photon number state. We generalize this method to wave packets in arbitrary potentials.

Abstract
Nonhuman primate models of human AIDS have been used successfully to evaluate candidate vaccines and infection intervention therapies. Successes of pathogenicity studies in primate models have been limited because of the varied infection outcomes and characteristic low number of study animals. The acutely pathogenic HIV-2(287)--Macaca nemestrina model has shown promise both in antiviral drug evaluation and in pathogenicity studies. Here we describe virus replication, spread, and host responses during the first 28 days of HIV-2(287) infection. Focusing on 18 macaques from a larger 27-macaque study, we report changing virus loads, CD4(+) cell depletions, and antibody responses both systemically and in the mucosa of the small intestine. After intravenous inoculation, blood and intestinal tissue were collected from pairs of macaques at 12 hr and 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, 14, 21, and 28 days postinfection. Specimens were examined for evidence of infection by quantitative cultures, in situ hybridization, lymphocyte subset monitoring, and antibody production. The data were presented serially as though all samples were collected from a single macaque. The highest blood virus loads were detected between days 10 and 14 and subsequently decreased through day 28. This coincided with a significant increase in ileum mucosa virus loads on day 10, which became undetectable by day 28. The lowest levels of CD4(+) cells were observed on days 21 and 28 in blood and ileum mucosa. CD4(+):CD8(+) cell ratios in blood and ileum dropped dramatically after day 10 to lowest levels by day 28. Intestinal virus loads were inversely correlated with CD4(+) cell and virus-specific antibody levels in the ileum after day 6. These results underscore the suitability of this model for pathogenicity studies as well as the importance of the intestinal lymphoid tissues as an initial site of virus replication and cell destruction during the acute, asymptomatic stage of AIDS development.

The selectivity versus trypsin can be improved by incorporation of substituents on the naphthyl ring. The mode of binding of the compound was determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
A 52-year-old Caucasian woman with pigmentary glaucoma underwent a left cyclodiathermy procedure for raised intraocular pressure (IOP) in 1962 and right sclerectomy the following year. Over 25 years later a low IOP was still maintained though pilocarpine was needed in the left eye. After a left cataract extraction with insertion of a posterior chamber lens, field loss had not progressed very much in either eye though the visual acuity was reduced in the more affected eye. Both drainage operation and a cyclodestructive procedure controlled IOP over a long period of time in this patient and were associated with only a very gradual progression of field loss.

Seventy minutes post pancreatectomy, in dogs that are K loaded - made abruptly hyperkalemic and "life threatened" - by infusion with 2 mEgKC1/kg-/hr until prelethal ECG changes of hyperkalemic cardiotoxicity appear, a kaluresis independent K homeostatic mechanism transfers about 2/3 of administered K to intracellular fluid. Treatment of K loaded pancreatectomized dogs with glucagon or a B receptor blockading dosage of propranolol does not alter the proportion transferred, but treatment with glucagon and propranolol reduces it. It appears that in pancx dogs there is a reciprocal relation between insulin and B receptor mediated K transfer and that glucagon is involved in activity of the kaluresis independent K homeostatic mechanism.

Abstract
The kinetics of the irritant response on the mouse ear [erythema measured quantitatively by the irritant dose 50 (ID50)] and its relation to the initiation-promoting activity on the back skin of NMRI mice of some polyfunctional diterpene esters were investigated: (1) A very rapid and transient erythema response is associated with low or absent promoting activity (2) an early and more persistent erythema response in most cases is associated with moderate-to-high promoting activity, and (3) a relatively late onset but persistence up to at least 24 h of the erythema response is associated with high promoting activity. These results may indicate a relationship between the kinetics of the erythema response and the initiation-promoting activity of diterpene esters. The comparatively low promoting activity of esters carrying polyunsaturated acyl functions may indicate the importance of pharmacological parameters such as bioavailability and stability in the biological system, drug-receptor interaction, and "intrinsic activity" of the diterpene esters.

Abstract
In nephrectomized dogs infused with 2 mEq KCl/kg/hr a homeostatic mechanism retards the development of hyperkalemia by transferring about 70% of the K load to intracellular fluid. beta Adrenergic receptor activity is importantly involved in the transfer process; halting it with propranolol reduces the proportion transferred to less than 35%. The addition of pancreatectomy increases the involvement of beta receptor activity; propranolol treatment now reduces the proportion transferred to less than 20%. Insulin treatment, on the other hand, not only improves transfer of a K load, it also alters the response to propranolol. Nephrectomized dogs treated with 2 U insulin/kg/hr deposit some 80% of the infused K in intracellular fluid. After beta receptor blockade, nearly 90% is transferred. The results suggest that in the K homeostatic mechanism of nephrectomized dogs, insulin and beta receptors may be reciprocally related. K transfer mediated by beta receptors improves after pancreatectomy, and insulin mediated K transfer improves after beta receptors are inactivated.

Abstract
In a dog K loaded by infusion of 2 mEq KCl/kg/hr, kaluresis plays a relatively small part in slowing the development of hyperkalemia and cardiotoxicity. These are largely retarded by a non-renal mechanism that transfer most of the infused K from extracellular to intracellular fluid. Treatment with beta receptor blocking dosages of propranolol significantly reduces K transfer capacity, but it also markedly diminishes the KCl stimulated secretory response of insulin, a powerful mediator of K transfer. In dogs in which diminution of the insulin response is prevented by administration of exogenous hormone, beta receptor blockade has no effect on K transfer capacity. Thus, it appears that decreased insulin secretion is responsible for the observed fall of K transfer capacity in dogs with beta receptor blockade. However, other evidence suggests that our results can also mean that a K load elicits the secretion of enough insulin to mediate K transfer in the presence of beta receptor blockade; if the hormone response is absent or deficient, beta receptors may be importantly involved in mediation of K transfer to intracellular fluid.

The occlusion of the dental arches determines the positioning of the mandible through intercuspidation. This intercuspidal position may force the condyles into a displaced position. Purpose of this paper is to show how to obtain a proper diagnosis of the cranio-mandibular relationship with a new instrument, the mandibular positions indicator.
