Abstract
Grain boundaries (GBs) are one- or two-dimensional (2D) defects, which are universal in crystals and play a crucial role in determining their mechanical, electrical, optical, and thermoelectric properties. In general, GBs tend to decrease electrical or thermal conductivity, and consequently degrade the performance of devices. However, the unusual characteristics of GBs have led to the production of a new class of memristors with 2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and the creation of conducting channels in 2D topological insulators. Therefore, understanding the nature of GBs and their influence on device applications emphasizes the importance of GB engineering for future 2D TMD-based devices. This review discusses recent progress made in the investigation of various roles of GBs in 2D TMDs characterized via scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy.

Deviated Saccadic Trajectory as a Biometric Signature of Glaucoma. Transl Vis Sci Technol 2023; 12:15. Abstract
Purpose To investigate whether the trajectories of saccadic eye movements (SEMs) significantly differ between glaucoma patients and controls. Methods SEMs were recorded by video-based infrared oculography in 53 patients with glaucoma and 41 age-matched controls. Participants were asked to bilaterally view 24°-horizontal, 14°-vertical, and 20°-diagonal eccentric Goldmann III-sized stimuli. SEMs were evaluated with respect to the saccadic reaction time (SRT), the mean velocity, amplitude, and two novel measures: departure angle (DA) and arrival angle (AA). These parameters were compared between the groups and the associations of SEM parameters with glaucoma parameters and integrated visual field defects were investigated. Results Glaucoma patients exhibited increased mean SRT, DA, and AA values compared with controls for 14°-vertical visual targets (P = 0.05, P < 0.01, and P < 0.01, respectively). The SRT, DA, and AA were significantly associated with the mean and pattern standard deviations of perimetry and with the mean RNFL thickness by OCT (all P < 0.001). Glaucoma was associated with the AA (P = 0.05) and both the SRT (P = 0.01) and DA (P = 0.04) were associated with integrated visual field defects. Conclusions The saccadic trajectories of glaucoma patients depart in an erroneous path and compensate the disparity by deviating the trajectory at arrival. Translational Relevance The initial deviation that we observed (despite continuous exposure to the stimulus) suggests the disoriented spatial perception of glaucoma patients which may be relevant to difficulties encountered daily.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dietary fiber intake is associated with a lower risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. However, it is unknown whether dietary fiber has a beneficial effect on preventing the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND MEASUREMENTS Using the UK Biobank prospective cohort, 110,412 participants who completed at least one dietary questionnaire and had an estimated glomerular filtration rate ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2, urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio <30 mg/g, and no history of CKD were included. The primary exposure was total dietary fiber density, calculated by dividing the absolute amount of daily total fiber intake by total energy intake (g/1,000 kcal). We separately examined soluble and insoluble fiber densities as additional predictors. The primary outcome was incident CKD based on diagnosis codes. RESULTS A total of 3,507 (3.2%) participants developed incident CKD during a median follow-up of 9.9 years. In a multivariable cause-specific model, the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for incident CKD were 0.85 (0.77-0.94), 0.78 (0.70-0.86), and 0.76 (0.68-0.86), respectively, for the second, third, and highest quartiles of dietary fiber density (reference: lowest quartile). In a continuous model, the aHR for each +∆1.0g/1,000 kcal increase in dietary fiber density was 0.97 (95% CI, 0.95-0.99). This pattern of associations was similar for both soluble and insoluble fiber densities and did not differ across subgroups of sex, age, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and inflammation. CONCLUSION Increased fiber intake was associated with a lower risk of CKD in this large well-characterized cohort.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Salted napa cabbage is the most important ingredient of kimchi. Currently, people have started to prepare ready-to-use salted napa cabbage at home. This study focused on this trend by investigating consumers' beliefs, opinions, and actual use of the products by conducting a telephone survey (895 female consumers) and face-to-face interviews (n = 514) in 2016 and a telephone survey (n = 200) in 2021. Most respondents (93 and 91% in 2016 and 2021, respectively) answered that convenience was the main reason for using salted napa cabbage. Regarding consumption behavior, 22 and 16% of the respondents in each year used salted napa cabbage after storing it for more than 24 h. In particular, 85 and 91% of consumers stored the product at room temperature, and 60 and 58% used it without washing, which could affect the quality of the food, as microorganisms could multiply during the storage. Inappropriate handling increased by age group, especially in 2021 (P < 0.05). In the query on satisfaction after using the products, 85 and 80% of respondents were satisfied because the product was convenient (54%) and hygienic (17%). Conversely, the respondents who were not satisfied with the products did not like the degree of salting and unhygienic status of the products. The majority (93 and 80%) of consumers preferred buying salted napa cabbage again because of its convenience. Although consumers thought that hygiene and quality were important factors, many respondents (83 and 72%) were not aware of foodborne illnesses associated with kimchi. Nevertheless, consumers intended to pay more for safe, salted napa cabbage (72 and 76%). The results of this study provide useful and credible data for understanding the factors affecting consumers' consumption and general beliefs and opinions on the use of salted napa cabbage, especially for food safety management. Abstract
Innovative technologies on green hydrogen production become significant as the hydrogen economy has grown globally. Biohydrogen is one of green hydrogen production methods, and microbial electrochemical cells (MECs) can be key to biohydrogen provision. However, MECs are immature for biohydrogen technology due to several limitations including extracellular electron transfer (EET) engineering. Fundamental understanding of EET also needs more works to accelerate MEC commercialization. Interestingly, studies on biohydrogen gas purification are limited although biohydrogen gas mixture requires complex purification for use. To facilitate an MEC-based biohydrogen technology as the green hydrogen supply this review discussed EET kinetics, engineering of EET and direct interspecies electron transfer associated with hydrogen yield and the application of advanced molecular biology for improving EET kinetics. Finally, this article reviewed biohydrogen purification technologies to better understand purification and use appropriate for biohydrogen, focusing on membrane separation.

Abstract
Purpose In acquiring images of the posterior eye, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides low spatial resolution of the overall shape of the eye while optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers high spatial resolution of the limited range. Through the merger of the two devices, we attempted to acquire detailed anatomy of the posterior eye. Methods Optical and display distortions in OCT images were corrected using the Listing reduced eye model. The 3.0T orbital MRI images were placed on the three-dimensional coordinate system of the computer-aided design (CAD) program. Employing anterior scleral canal opening, visual axis, and scleral curvature as references, original and corrected OCT images were ported into the CAD application. The radii of curvature of the choroid–scleral interfaces (Rc values) of all original and corrected OCT images were compared to the MRI images. Results Sixty-five eyes of 33 participants (45.58 ± 19.82 years) with a mean Rc of 12.94 ± 1.24 mm on axial MRI and 13.66 ± 2.81 mm on sagittal MRI were included. The uncorrected horizontal OCT (30.51 ± 9.34 mm) and the uncorrected vertical OCT (34.35 ± 18.09 mm) lengths differed significantly from the MRI Rc values (both P < 0.001). However, the mean Rc values of the corrected horizontal (12.50 ± 1.21 mm) and vertical (13.05 ± 1.98 mm) images did not differ significantly from the Rc values of the corresponding MRI planes (P = 0.065 and P = 0.198, respectively). Conclusions Features identifiable only on OCT and features only on MRI were successfully integrated into a unitary posterior eye. Translational Relevance Our CAD-based converging method may establish the collective anatomy of the posterior eye and the neural canal, beyond the range of the OCT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: We investigated the feasibility of early line-probe assay (LPA) using remnant DNA of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.METHODS: M. tuberculosis DNA specimens with cycle threshold (Ct) values reported and collected from patients with known results for both LPA with culture isolates and phenotype drug susceptibility testing (pDST) were selected. The diagnostic performance of DNA-based LPA according to the Ct value was investigated.RESULTS: A total of 143 respiratory specimens were included. For isoniazid resistance, the accuracy in subgroups with Ct value <25, 25-29 and ≥29 was respectively 96.8%, 65.7% and 13.3%. For rifampicin resistance, accuracy in subgroups with Ct values <29 and ≥29 was respectively 87.8% and 13.3%. When compared to the pDST results, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value in specimens with Ct values <25 was respectively 1.00 (95% CI 0.69-1.00), 0.95 (95% CI 0.76-1.00), 0.91 (95% CI 0.59-1.00) and 1.00 (95% CI 0.83-1.00) for isoniazid resistance. For rifampicin resistance, corresponding values in subgroups with Ct values <29 were respectively 0.89 (95% CI 0.52-1.00), 0.98 (95% CI 0.91-1.00), 0.80 (95% CI 0.50-0.94) and 0.99 (95% CI 0.92-1.00).CONCLUSIONS: DNA-based early LPA with remnant DNA from respiratory samples was feasible and accurate when the Ct values were low.

Abstract
Recently, light-emitting diode (LED)-based devices have emerged as effective and safe tools for the treatment of photoaged skin. However, few studies have been conducted to elucidate the underlying mechanism behind the effect on photoaging of LED light. In this study, we induced photoaging of human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) with Ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation and evaluated the ability of 590 nm LED radiation to induce recovery from oxidative stress, restore collagen formation, and regulate inflammatory changes. Photoaging was induced in cultured human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) using UVB irradiaton of 50 mJ/cm2 . Then, the photoaged HDFs were irradiated with LED using a custom-built 590 nm LED device which emits light with an intensity of 38 mW/cm2 (irradiated for 900 s with 34.2 J/cm2 of total energy). LED irradiation significantly attenuated UVB-induced reactive oxygen species generation and UVB-induced phosphorylation of JNK, c-Fos, and c-Jun. In addition, the procollagen levels were recovered significantly, and MMP-9 levels were significantly suppressed after LED irradiation. The UVB-induced phosphorylation levels of NF-κB and pro-inflammatory enzyme COX-2 also significantly decreased. Our results suggest that 590-nm yellow light irradiation may be an effective and safe anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory treatment modality for photoaged skin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to provide medical educators with insights into the current status and prospects of undergraduate medical education, which has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a database search of PubMed, Embase, and ERIC and identified articles on COVID-19-related undergraduate medical education. We independently reviewed titles and abstracts and extracted data on the geographic location of the study, area of specialty, phase in medical school (preclinical year, clerkship year, etc.), type of paper, and the main content of the study. RESULTS A total of 49 articles published across multiple countries were included in this study. These were categorized as dealing with either (1) curriculum changes in undergraduate medical education due to COVID-19 or (2) student-led educational activities related to COVID-19. The 41 articles in the first category showed two main trends: replacing in-person lectures with online classes in the preclinical years and adopting various remote educational methods to compensate for the discontinued or truncated clerkship in the clinical years. The eight articles in the second category showcased various student educational activities that were conducted to meet the public's medical needs during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS This review summarized the essential changes in undergraduate medical education worldwide and reflected on the various teaching methods adopted by medical schools. In preparation for the post-COVID era, a comprehensive online curriculum and evaluation tools are needed, which require the development of necessary infrastructure and adequate resources. Education aimed at helping students be more socially aware and responsible as medical professionals must be promoted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: As there had been no reduction in the TB burden in South Korea since 2000, a public-private mix (PPM) strategy was launched in 2011. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reasons for lost to follow-up (LTFU) among TB patients and their clinical characteristics.METHOD: A multicentre, cross-sectional study based on in-depth interviews with patients and their families by TB specialist nurses was conducted. Patients who were reported with a final outcome of LTFU in 2015-2017 at all PPM hospitals across the country were enrolled. Enrolled patients were classified into six subgroups by age and three major reasons for LTFU (adverse effects, refusal of treatment, marginalisation) and their clinical features were compared.RESULTS: Among 780 patients, those who were lost to follow-up due to adverse effects accounted for the largest proportion (n = 387). LTFU in those aged <65 years who refused treatment (n = 189) and those aged <65 years who were marginalised (n = 108) were related to having smear-positive TB and a previous history of unfavourable outcomes.CONCLUSION: To reduce LTFU in South Korea, comprehensive strategies, including management of adverse effects, systematic counselling and education, should be implemented.

Abstract
Highly permselective and durable membrane materials have been sought for energy-efficient C3 H6 /C3 H8 separation. Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) comprising a polymer matrix and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for this application; however, rational matching of filler-matrix is challenging and their separation performances need to be further improved. Here, we propose a novel strategy of "defect engineering" in MOFs as an additional degree of freedom to design advanced MMMs. MMMs incorporated with defect-engineered MOFs exhibit exceptionally high C3 H6 permeability and maintained C3 H6 /C3 H8 selectivity, especially with enhanced stability under industrial mixed-gas conditions. The gas transport, sorption, and material characterizations reveal that the defect sites in MOFs provide the resulting MMMs with not only ultrafast diffusion pathways but also favorable C3 H6 sorption by forming complexation with unsaturated open metal sites, confirmed by in situ FT-IR studies. Most importantly, the concept is also valid for different polymer matrices and gas pairs, demonstrating its versatile potential in other fields.

Abstract
SO2 emissions from coal-fired boilers are air pollutants and a source of acid rain, causing extensive environmental pollution. Limestone (CaCO3) is a Ca-based sorbent which is injected into circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers, where it combines with SO2 to produce calcium sulfate (CaSO4). As a result, SO2 emissions from a power plant are reduced. In this study, CaCO3 addition was proposed and the desulfurization efficiency improved. The direct desulfurization reaction is dominant in a commercial CFB boiler due to the high CO2 partial pressure, but CaO is formed at a fast reaction rate by calcination in the high temperature or in the low CO2 partial pressure region. When CaO remains in the loop seal, it is exposed to a high CO2 partial pressure condition moving through the recirculation section for an extended period and re-injected into the furnace as recarbonated CaCO3. To analyze the direct desulfurization reaction kinetics, a shrink core model in which the reaction proceeds inside the particle was adopted. Surface observations through FE-SEM of CaSO4 produced by the 180 minute long desulfurization experiment using TGA suggest that the CaSO4 crystal growth rate increased after the pre-treatment (recarbonation) of limestone. Recarbonation lowered the limestone crystallinity, causing a faster reaction. The CaCO3 recarbonation increased the Ca utilization by more than 20% when the direct desulfurization reaction occurred. The TGA experiments show that recarbonation contributes to CaSO4 conversion. Increasing the desulfurization efficiency using recarbonation can reduce the fixed investment and operating costs of oxy-fuel CFB plants because only desulfurization in the furnace is able to meet SO2 emission regulations or lower the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) dependence. Accordingly, the desulfurization conversions of recarbonated CaCO3 and limestone were compared in this study. Morphological changes in the limestone were also evaluated using XRD, FE-SEM, and other analysis methods.

Abstract
Recently, electrochemical hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation from oxygen molecules has been extensively studied. Thus far, the best peroxide activity under alkaline conditions has been reported at the surface of a mild reduced graphene oxide annealed at 600 °C (mrGO-600). However, the detailed material information, such as chemical functionality and structural morphology, is unknown, which results in ambiguous debates on its catalytic active sites. To solve this problem, we intensively characterize the structure of mrGO-600 to clarify the origin of its catalytic activity. Various characterizations, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmittance electron microscopy coupled with in situ infrared spectroelecrochemistry, reveal that the annealing process generates not only various hole edge defects that are related to the ring ether group but also numerous point defects that result in a small-sized disconnected graphitic carbon region. These defects are believed to form a unique atomic level configuration in mrGO-600, which enables it to facilitate high peroxide-generated activity from oxygen molecules in an alkaline electrolyte.

Abstract
The homochirality of amino acids in living organisms is one of the great mysteries in the phenomena of life. To understand the chiral recognition of amino acids, we have used scanning tunnelling microscopy to investigate the self-assembly of molecules of the amino acid tryptophan (Trp) on Au(111). Earlier experiments showed only homochiral configurations in the self-assembly of amino acids, despite using a mixture of the two opposite enantiomers. In our study, we demonstrate that heterochiral configurations can be favored energetically when L- and D-Trp molecules are mixed to form self-assembly on the Au surface. Using density functional theory calculations, we show that the indole side chain strongly interacts with the Au surface, which reduces the system effectively to two-dimension, with chiral recognition disabled. Our study provides important insight into the recognition of the chirality of amino acid molecules in life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidality are common reasons for child and adolescent psychiatric emergencies. We aimed to investigate the incidence of pediatric emergency department (PED) utilization for psychiatric problems in children and adolescents and to identify demographic and clinical characteristics of youths who visited the PED for suicide attempt (SA) and/or NSSI. METHODS The medical records of children and adolescents who visited the PED for psychiatric problems from January 2015 to November 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic and clinical variables including psychiatric disorders were collected. We compared the characteristics of youths who presented to the PED for SA and/or NSSI with those of youths without SA or NSSI. Student's t-test, χ² test, and multivariate logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS During 59 months of observation, 194 youths visited the PED and the number of total PED visits was 336. Among them, 46 youths (23.7%) visited the PED for SA and/or NSSI at least once, and the number of visits was 91 (27.1% of PED visits). Youths with SA and/or NSSI were older (P = 0.001) and more likely to be a girl (P = 0.005) and to report parental absence (P = 0.023). Bipolar and related disorders (P = 0.032) and depressive disorders (P = 0.004) were more common in youths with SA and/or NSSI, while schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders (P = 0.030) and somatic symptom and related disorders (P = 0.007) were more common in those without SA and NSSI. After adjusting for age, sex, and parental marital status, bipolar and related disorders (odds ratio [OR], 6.72), depressive disorders (OR, 9.59), and somatic symptom and related disorders (OR, 0.12) were significantly associated with SA and/or NSSI. Youths with SA and/or NSSI also stayed longer in the PED (P = 0.007). CONCLUSION SA and NSSI are one of the main reasons for child and adolescent admittance to psychiatric services in the PED and are associated with psychiatric comorbidities. An appropriate risk assessment for suicidality and self-injury and proper management and referral to mental health services at the PED are of the utmost importance.

Abstract
Grain boundaries (GBs) are ubiquitous in solids and have been of central importance in understanding the nature of polycrystals. In addition to their classical roles, topological insulators (TIs) offer a chance to realize GBs hosting distinct topological states that can be controlled by their crystal symmetries. However, such roles of crystalline symmetry in two-dimensional (2D) TIs have not been definitively measured yet. Here, we present the first direct evidence of a symmetry-enforced metallic state along a GB in 1T'-MoTe2, a prototypical 2D TI. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we show a metallic state along a GB with nonsymmorphic lattice symmetry and its absence along another boundary with symmorphic symmetry. Our atomistic simulations demonstrate in-gap Weyl semimetallic states for the former, whereas they demonstrate gapped states for the latter, explaining our observation well. The observed metallic state, tightly linked to its crystal symmetry, can be used to create a stable conducting nanowire inside TIs.

Abstract
Quarantine often provokes negative psychological consequences. Thus, we aimed to identify the psychological and behavioral responses and stressors of caregivers quarantined with young patients after a close contact to a coronavirus disease 2019 case at a children's hospital. More than 90% of the caregivers reported feelings of worry and nervousness, while some of them reported suicidal ideations (4.2%), and/or homicidal ideations (1.4%). Fear of infection of the patient (91.7%) and/or oneself (86.1%) were most frequently reported stressors. A multidisciplinary team including infection control team, pediatrician, psychiatrist, nursing staff and legal department provided supplies and services to reduce caregiver's psychological distress. Psychotropic medication was needed in five (6.9%), one of whom was admitted to the psychiatry department due to suicidality. Quarantine at a children's hospital makes notable psychological impacts on the caregivers and a multidisciplinary approach is required.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising 2D material for adsorbents and membranes, in particular, for the CO2 separation process. However, CO2 diffusion and sorption in GO and its layered structures are still not well understood because of its heterogeneous structure. Here we report CO2 sorption in GO and its derivatives (e.g., reduced GO (rGO)) in powders and films. These CO2 sorption behaviors reveal that GO is highly CO2-philic via complex CO2-functional-group-surface interactions, as compared with graphite and rGOs. Even in highly interlocked, lamellar GO films, CO2 molecules above a certain threshold pressure can diffuse into GO interlayers, causing GO films to swell and leading to dramatic increases in CO2 sorption. Intercalated water in GO interlayers can be removed by preferential CO2 sorption without any changes in the GO chemical structure. This finding helps to explain the origin of CO2 affinity with GO and has implications for preparing anhydrous GO assemblies for various applications.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the impact of pre-rigor salting using KCl on the technological properties of ground chicken breast. Chicken breast muscle (M. pectoralis major and minor) was hot-debonded and salted with 2% NaCl (w/w), 1% NaCl+1% KCl mixture, or 2% KCl, respectively, within 30 min after slaughter. Post-rigor salting treatment was prepared with 2% NaCl at 24 h postmortem. All pre-rigor salting treatments showed higher ultimate pH, protein solubility, and final yield than post-rigor salting treatment (P < 0.05). However, the positive effects of pre-rigor salting on chicken breast differed by salt type. Pre-rigor salting with KCl resulted in higher ultimate pH and R-values of chicken breast than pre-rigor salting with NaCl (P < 0.05). Despite the high ultimate pH, pre-rigor salting with KCl resulted in lower protein solubility, final yield, and hardness of chicken breast than pre-rigor salting with NaCl (P < 0.05). These results indicate that pre-rigor salting with KCl could contribute to the maintenance of relatively excellent technological properties of pre-rigor chicken breasts compared to post-rigor salted chicken breast. However, this current study also suggests that the impact of KCl on technological properties in pre-rigor chicken breast, such as water-holding capacity, protein solubility, and texture, could be less effective than pre-rigor salting with NaCl at an identical percentage concentration.

Abstract
Here, we elucidate the gas transport behavior through few-layer graphene oxide membranes (FGOMs) that have a systematically controlled diffusion pathway, including tortuosity and channel width. The obtained unusual gas permeation order (especially, CH4 > O2 > N2) of the FGOM provides strong evidence that gas molecules can indeed penetrate through the empty voids created by horizontally assembled GO, which allows selective gas transport features. These unique transport features of the FGOM originate from its continuously connected channel structure, which is an analogue of an ultrapermeable glassy polymer with extremely large free volumes in dense films. Furthermore, variation of the channel width in the range of 0.50-0.55 nm leads to notable changes in the gas permeance orders related to CH4, indicating that there is a transition region for switching the gas transport mechanism between a molecular sieving character and the solution-diffusion model.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enzymatic hydrolysis and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) are common processing techniques in the extraction of active compounds from food materials. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of enzymatic hydrolysis combined with HHP treatments on ginsenoside metabolites in red ginseng. RESULTS The yield and changes in the levels of polyphenol and ginsenoside were measured in red ginseng treated with commercial enzymes such as Ultraflo L, Viscozyme, Cytolase PCL5, Rapidase and Econase E at atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa), 50 MPa, and 100 MPa. β-Glucosidase activity of Cytolase was the highest at 4258.2 mg-1 , whereas Viscozyme showed the lowest activity at 10.6 mg-1 . Pressure of 100 MPa did not affect the stability or the activity of the β-glucosidase. Treatment of red ginseng with Cytolase and Econase at 100 MPa significantly increased the dry weight and polyphenol content of red ginseng, compared with treatments at 0.1 MPa and 50 MPa (P < 0.05). The amounts of ginsenoside and ginsenoside metabolites derived from red ginseng processed using Cytolase were higher than those derived from red ginseng treated with the other enzymes. Treatment with Cytolase also significantly increased the skin and intestinal permeability of red ginseng-derived polyphenols. CONCLUSION Cytolase could be useful as an enzymatic treatment to enhance the yield of bioactive compounds from ginseng under HHP. In addition, ginsenoside metabolites obtained by Cytolase hydrolysis combined with HHP are functional substances with increased intestinal and skin permeability. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Objectives
The present study was designed to investigate a synergistic staphylocidal interaction of antimicrobials.
Methods
The widely used preservative benzoic acid (BzA) and its derivatives [4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HA) and β-resorcylic acid (β-RA)] combined with capric acid (CPA) were investigated.
Results
β-RA was identified as the most effective antimicrobial exhibiting synergistic action with CPA against both Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA. For example, a complete reduction of bacteria (>7.3 log reduction) was obtained within 5 min after treatment with 5.0 mM β-RA (0.079%) plus 0.20 mM CPA (0.004%), while treatment with each material individually showed low bactericidal effects (<1.5 log reduction). Flow cytometry analysis identified membrane disruption related to the synergistic mechanisms, including the following: (i) membrane disruption by CPA (69.2% of cells were damaged by 0.20 mM CPA treatment); (ii) antimicrobial entry through the damaged membrane; and (iii) cytoplasmic ion imbalance resulting in cell death. We verified that the synergistic combination was also effective against MRSA on artificial skin (99.989% elimination after 5 min).
Conclusions
We used only consumer-preferred natural-borne antimicrobials and a very small amount of material was needed based on the synergistic effects. Therefore, these antimicrobials can be widely used as alternative anti-MRSA compounds in healthcare products, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, foods and for environmental hygiene.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This article intended to identify and describe areas in need of services and interventions for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families in Seoul, Korea. METHODS A descriptive comparison was made between available services and interventions in Seoul, Korea and Massachusetts, USA. Relevant information was obtained through sending phone/email inquiries to the governments and organizations, visiting their official websites, and searching for published articles or reports. RESULTS In a few areas such as level of education, economy, and general quality of healthcare, Seoul was found to be similar to Massachusetts. However, in terms of services and interventions for individuals with ASD and their families, especially early identification and intervention, special education, care coordination, school-based programs, and transition to adulthood, Massachusetts was shown to have far more availability. CONCLUSION The limited availability of services and interventions for individuals with ASD and their families in Seoul in comparison to Massachusetts, underlines target areas for further investment and development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Early detection of local recurrence is important to increase the chance of cure because local recurrence is the main cause of treatment failure in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. We evaluated the added value of voxel-based color maps of dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging compared with conventional MR imaging alone for detecting local recurrence of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively enrolled 63 consecutive patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma after definitive treatment and posttreatment surveillance MR imaging studies that demonstrated focal enhancement at the primary site. Three independent readers assessed conventional MR imaging and a pair of color maps of initial and final 90-second time-signal intensity areas under the curve from dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging. The sensitivities, specificities, and accuracies of both conventional MR imaging alone and combined interpretation of conventional and dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging were assessed using the clinicopathologic diagnosis as the criterion standard. κ statistics were used to evaluate interreader agreement. RESULTS There were 28 patients with subsequently documented local recurrence and 35 with posttreatment change. Adding dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging to conventional MR imaging significantly increased the diagnostic accuracies for detecting local recurrence (48%-54% versus 87%-91%; P < .05), with excellent interreader agreement (κ = 0.8; 95% CI, 0.67-0.92 to κ = 0.81; 95% CI, 0.69-0.93). By all 3 readers, the specificities were also significantly improved by adding dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging to conventional MR imaging (22%-43% versus 87%-91%; P < .001) without sacrificing the sensitivities (68%-82% versus 86%-89%; P > .05). CONCLUSIONS Adding voxel-based color maps of initial and final 90-second time-signal intensity areas under the curve from dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging to conventional MR imaging increases the diagnostic accuracy to detect local recurrence in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma by improving the specificity without sacrificing the sensitivity.

Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTI), one of the most common diseases in humans, are caused primarily by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Cranberry juice (CB) is a widely known prophylaxis for UTI, but the treatment of CB alone could not effectively eradicate preformed UPEC biofilms. The aim of this study was to develop enforced CB composites within a short time by adding a small quantity of natural borne antimicrobials. UPEC biofilms (initial: 6·0 log CFU per cm2 ), formed on silicone coupons in artificial urine medium, were exposed to CB (4-8%), caprylic acid (CAR; 0·025-0·05%) and thymol (TM; 0·025-0·05%) at 37°C for 1 min. Individual treatment of each compound did not show the significant antibacterial effect on UPEC biofilms (P > 0·05). Otherwise, the survivor counts of biofilms were synergistically reduced with CB containing any of the antimicrobials. For example combined treatment with CB (8%) + CAR (0·05%) + TM (0·05%) resulted in a 6 log reduction in UPEC populations in the biofilm (no detectable bacteria remained) with 4·6 log of synergistic bactericidal effect. The confocal laser scanning microscope images indicated that any composites including TM might result in biofilm detachment from the surface. The present method is cost-effective and more acceptable to consumers as it is based on the synergistic interaction of natural borne antimicrobials. The results of this study could be widely applicable in the functional food, medical and healthcare field. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Anti-biofilm effect of cranberry juice (CB) has been focused mainly on inhibiting biofilm formation of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC); however, combined treatment with natural borne antimicrobials derived from coconut oil (caprylic acid) and oregano essential oil (thymol) could synergistically enhance its eradicating activity against biofilms. This study developed novel CB composites showing marked anti-biofilm effects (complete eradication of UPEC biofilms within just 1 min).

Abstract
The direct growth of graphene on a semiconducting substrate opens a new avenue for future graphene-based applications. Understanding the structural and electronic properties of the graphene on a semiconducting surface is key for realizing such structures; however, these properties are poorly understood thus far. Here, we provide insight into the structural and electronic properties of graphene grown directly on a Ge(110) substrate. Our scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study reveals that overlaying graphene on Ge(110) promotes the formation of a new Ge surface reconstruction, i.e., a (6 × 2) superstructure, which has been never observed for a bare Ge(110) surface. The electronic properties of the system exhibit the characteristics of both graphene and Ge. The differential conductance (d I/d V) spectrum from a scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) study bears a parabolic structure, corresponding to a reduction in the graphene Fermi velocity, exhibiting additional peaks stemming from the p-orbitals of Ge. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the existence of surface states due to the p-orbitals of Ge.

A total of 364 samples of vegetable- and meat-based meals were collected at three processing steps: step I, preparation of raw ingredients; step II, processing and cooking; and step III, finished meals. Microbiological quality was evaluated by using data for the prevalence and concentration of the aerobic plate counts, total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms (FC), and Escherichia coli. The data were analyzed for differences between cafeterias, seasons, raw materials, and processing steps. Fourteen (15.2%) of the 92 finished meal samples were microbiologically unsatisfactory. Neither cafeteria nor season was significantly associated with microbiological quality ( P > 0.05). However, the type of raw ingredients and processing steps were significantly associated with differences in microbiological quality. Vegetable-based meals had higher TC concentrations than meat-based meals because salad and seasoned and fermented vegetables are not cooked, unlike heat-processed meat products. Microbial counts tended to decrease through the processing steps, and E. coli, which could only be enumerated on uncooked chicken breast (1.6 log CFU/g) and sliced pork (2.6 log CFU/g), was totally eliminated by boiling and roasting. However, the presence of FC was not completely eliminated, even by cooking, and so this group of organisms should be considered as an important indicator of hygienic meal preparation in cafeterias. Although pathogenic E. coli was not isolated in this study, continuous microbiological monitoring of composite foods served in cafeterias should be performed as the presence of TC and FC in finished meals indicates the potential for contamination by pathogenic E. coli.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the impact of probiotic feeding and chronic heat stress on meat quality, total lipid and phospholipid contents, lipid oxidation, antioxidant capacity, and heat shock protein abundance of broiler breast muscle. A total of 240 male broilers (5 birds per pen) were subjected to 4 treatments consisting of a 2 × 2 factorial design. Broilers were kept at 21-32-21°C for 10 h daily (heat stress, HS) or 21°C (thermoneutral condition) and fed a regular diet or the diet mixed with probiotic (250 ppm of Sporulin containing 3 strains of Bacillus subtilis). A total of 48 broilers (12 birds/treatment) were harvested at 46 d. Neither HS nor probiotic had substantial impacts on water-holding capacity, shear force, and color characteristics. HS induced lipid oxidation as increased 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), in which probiotic feeding decreased TBARS value (P = 0.002) and phospholipid contents (P = 0.0033) in breast muscle of HS broilers. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity was increased with HS (P < 0.0001), but no significant impact of probiotic supplementation was found. Neither probiotic nor HS affected catalase activity, but superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were lower in HS broilers compared to thermoneutral controls (P < 0.0001) and in probiotics-fed broilers (P < 0.0001) compared to their counterparts. In addition, a significant interaction between probiotic and HS was found at glutathione peroxidase activities, in which breast muscle of broilers fed probiotic at thermoneutral condition showed the highest activity (P < 0.05). Regarding heat shock protein (HSP) determination, HS slightly increased the levels of both HSP70 (P = 0.08) and HSP27 (P = 0.05), but no significant impacts of probiotic supplementation were found. Our results indicate that probiotic feeding could improve breast muscle weight without adverse impacts on meat quality attributes, as well as alleviate oxidative deterioration of breast muscle of broilers undergoing heat stress.

Abstract
The assembly of natural proteinaceous biopolymers into macro-scale architectures is of great importance in synthetic biology, soft-material science and regenerative therapy. The self-assembly of protein tends to be limited due to anisotropic interactions among protein molecules, poor solubility and stability. Here, we introduce a unique platform to self-immobilize diverse proteins (fibrous and globular, positively and negatively charged, low and high molecular weight) using silicon surfaces with pendant -NH2 groups via a facile one step diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) method. All the experimental proteins (type I collagen, bovine serum albumin and cytochrome C) self-assemble into seaweed-like branched dendritic architectures via classical DLA in the absence of any electrolytes. The notable differences in branching architectures are due to dissimilarities in protein colloidal sub-units, which is typical for each protein type, along with the heterogeneous distribution of surface -NH2 groups. Fractal analysis of assembled structures is used to explain the underlying route of fractal deposition; which concludes how proteins with different functionality can yield similar assembly. Further, the nano-micro-structured surfaces can be used to provide functional topographical cues to study cellular responses, as demonstrated using rat bone marrow stem cells. The results indicate that the immobilization of proteins via DLA does not affect functionality, instead serving as topographical cues to guide cell morphology. This indicates a promising design strategy at the tissue-material interface and is anticipated to guide future surface modifications. A cost-effective standard templating strategy is therefore proposed for fundamental and applied particle aggregation studies, which can be used at multiple length scales for biomaterial design and surface reformation.

Abstract
Despite recent efforts for the development of transition-metal-dichalcogenide-based high-performance thin-film transistors, device performance has not improved much, mainly because of the high contact resistance at the interface between the 2D semiconductor and the metal electrode. Edge contact has been proposed for the fabrication of a high-quality electrical contact; however, the complete electronic properties for the contact resistance have not been elucidated in detail. Using the scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques, the edge contact, as well as the lateral boundary between the 2D semiconducting layer and the metalized interfacial layer, are investigated, and their electronic properties and the energy band profile across the boundary are shown. The results demonstrate a possible mechanism for the formation of an ohmic contact in homojunctions of the transition-metal dichalcogenides semiconductor-metal layers and suggest a new device scheme utilizing the low-resistance edge contact.

Abstract
Antidepressant prescription for youths has recently been on the increase. There is a growing concern over the increasing off-label usage of antidepressants. Current data on off-label antidepressant usage vary across countries and healthcare systems. Therefore, we examined the extent and pattern of antidepressant prescription for Korean children and adolescents using population-based data. Our data was retrieved from the Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort of the year 2013. Among 0.2 million children and adolescents aged 6-18 years from the cohort, subjects who had received any antidepressant medication in the year 2013 were investigated for the prescribed medication, concomitant psychotropic medication, and the associated diagnosis. A total of 2,190 children and adolescents (boys, 55.4%) received antidepressant medication. The most common diagnosis was depressive disorders (n = 469, 21.4%), followed by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (n = 442, 20.2%). Among the prescriptions (n = 3,370), escitalopram (n = 650, 24.1%) and fluoxetine (n = 553, 20.5%) were the two most frequently prescribed drugs. A majority of prescriptions (n = 2,039, 60.5%) included concomitant psychotropic agents, consisting of antipsychotics (n = 901, 26.7%), sedatives (n = 263, 26.3%), medication for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (n = 822, 24.4%), and some others. Our study shows the prescription pattern of antidepressants for children and adolescents in Korea, of which a large proportion is off-label. The results call for close monitoring by clinicians treating this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Surgical excision of an affected sublingual gland for treatment of a ranula can carry a potential of a nerve damage or postoperative complications. However, there have been little studies about effective minimally invasive therapeutic method, yet. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ethanol ablation of ranulas and the clinicoradiologic factors that can predict outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study evaluated 23 patients with ranulas treated by percutaneous ethanol ablation. Treatment outcome was assessed in 20 patients followed for at least 6 months. The duration of symptoms before ethanol ablation, pretreatment volume, and parapharyngeal extension on sonography and/or CT were correlated with the outcome. The Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher exact test were used for comparison of the factors according to the outcome. RESULTS The study evaluated 14 males and 9 females with a median age of 26 years (range, 3-41 years). Among 20 patients who were followed for at least 6 months (median, 20 months; range, 6-73 months), 9 patients (45%) demonstrated complete disappearance of the ranulas and 11 (55%) showed an incomplete response. When the patients were divided according to the duration of symptoms before ethanol ablation, the complete response rate was significantly higher in patients with ≤12 months of symptoms (73%, 8/11) than that in others (11%, 1/9) (P = .010). Pretreatment volume and parapharyngeal extension were not significantly different between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS Ethanol ablation is a safe and noninvasive treatment technique for ranulas with a significantly better outcome in patients with ≤12 months of symptoms. Therefore, it could be considered an alternative nonsurgical approach for ranulas with recent onset of symptoms.

Abstract
Background To investigate changes in the neural retina according to the presence of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defects in type 2 diabetes, and to determine the association between inner retina thickness and the severity of diabetic complications. Methods We studied non-glaucomatous patients with type 2 diabetes and control subjects Circumpapillary RNFL and macula ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thicknesses were measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. In patients with type 2 diabetes, a cardiovascular autonomic function test (AFT) was performed, which included the heart rate parameter of beat-beat variation—with deep breathing, in response to the Valsalva maneuver, and on postural change from lying to standing. The results of each test were scored as 0 for normal and 1 for abnormal. A total AFT score of 1 was defined as early cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN), and an AFT score≥ 2 as definite CAN. Results We compared control eyes (n = 70), diabetic eyes with RNFL defects (n = 47), and eyes without RNFL defects (n = 30). The average RNFL and GCIPL thicknesses were significantly different among groups (all, P<0.05). On post-hoc testing, diabetic eyes with RNFL defects had a significantly thinner average GCIPL thickness than those without RNFL defects. On multivariate analyses, significantly thinner average GCIPL was seen in early CAN staging (B = -4.32, P = 0.016) and in definite CAN staging (B = -10.33, P<0.001), compared with no CAN involvement, after adjusting for confounding parameters. Conclusions Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction was associated with early neurodegenerative changes in type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
We show that a common Li-O2 battery cathode binder, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), degrades in the presence of reduced oxygen species during Li-O2 discharge when adventitious impurities are present. This degradation process forms products that exhibit Raman shifts (∼1133 and 1525 cm-1) nearly identical to those reported to belong to lithium superoxide (LiO2), complicating the identification of LiO2 in Li-O2 batteries. We show that these peaks are not observed when characterizing extracted discharged cathodes that employ poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) as a binder, even when used to bind iridium-decorated reduced graphene oxide (Ir-rGO)-based cathodes similar to those that reportedly stabilize bulk LiO2 formation. We confirm that for all extracted discharged cathodes on which the 1133 and 1525 cm-1 Raman shifts are observed, only a 2.0 e-/O2 process is identified during the discharge, and lithium peroxide (Li2O2) is predominantly formed (along with typical parasitic side product formation). Our results strongly suggest that bulk, stable LiO2 formation via the 1 e-/O2 process is not an active discharge reaction in Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Contrast-enhanced CT protocols for papillary thyroid cancer are yet to be optimized. Our aim was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of arterial phase CT and delayed-phase CT protocols for lateral cervical lymph node metastasis from papillary thyroid carcinoma by using the lymph node tissue attenuation. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 327 lateral cervical lymph nodes (177 metastatic and 150 benign) from 131 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (107 initially diagnosed and 24 recurrences). Patients underwent CT by using 1 of 3 protocols: a 70-second (A) or a 35-second (B) delay with 100 mL of iodinated IV contrast or a 25-second delay with 75 mL of IV contrast (C). Two readers independently measured and compared lymph node tissue attenuation between metastatic and benign lymph nodes. An area under the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to differentiate metastatic and benign lymph nodes after multiple comparison correction for clustered data and was compared across the protocols. RESULTS The difference in mean lymph node tissue attenuation between metastatic and benign lymph nodes was maximum in protocol C (P < .001 for both readers). Protocol C showed the highest diagnostic performance (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.88-0.92) compared with protocol A (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.73-0.74, P < .001 for both readers) and B (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, .63-0.65, P < .01 for both readers). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of lymph node tissue attenuation by using a 99-HU cutoff value were 83%-87%, 93.7%-97.9%, 95.1%-97.3%, and 81.2%-87%. CONCLUSIONS A combination of 25-second delay CT and 75 mL of iodinated IV contrast can improve the diagnostic accuracy for lateral lymph node metastasis from papillary thyroid carcinoma compared with a combination of a 35- or 70-second delay with 100-mL of iodinated IV contrast.

Abstract
Microbiological quality of 206 raw ready-to-eat seafood samples was investigated according to species (gizzard shad, halibut, rockfish, tuna, oyster and squid) and distribution channels (fishery, hyper and online market). Enumeration of aerobic plate count and total coliforms (TC) and pathogenic bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus) was performed, and level of microbiological quality was classified into four groups: satisfactory, acceptable, unsatisfactory and unacceptable. Qualitative analysis was also performed for Escherichia coli and eight foodborne pathogens (B. cereus, E. coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., S. aureus, Vibrio cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus). Raw ready-to-eat seafood products revealed 0·5% at an unsatisfactory level and 4·9% at an unacceptable level due to ≥4 log CFU g-1 of TC in squid and ≥3 log CFU g-1 of V. parahaemolyticus in gizzard shad respectively. Gizzard shad was shown to be potentially hazardous, as its sashimi is eaten with its skin attached. Bacillus cereus, E. coli, S. aureus, V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus were qualitatively detected. Samples from the fishery market showed higher detection rate especially in V. parahaemolyticus (21·6%) and V. vulnificus (1·7%) which indicates the need to improve microbiological safety of raw ready-to-eat seafood products in fishery market. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Raw ready-to-eat seafood products like sashimi can be easily contaminated with various bacteria from aquatic environments and human reservoirs, which subsequently bring about a risk in food poisoning due to no heating process before consumption. The results of this study provide comprehensive microbiological data on various species of raw ready-to-eat seafood from various distribution channels. It may contribute to establish reasonable standard and effective strategies to ensure a good microbiological quality of raw ready-to-eat seafood for the safety of meals, like sashimi and sushi.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aims of this study were to report functional outcomes of salvage procedures for patients with cerebral palsy (CP) who have chronic dislocation of the hip using validated scoring systems, and to compare the results of three surgical techniques. We reviewed 37 patients retrospectively. The mean age at the time of surgery was 12.2 years (8 to 22) and the mean follow-up was 56 months (24 to 114). Patients were divided into three groups: 14 who underwent proximal femoral resection arthroplasty (PFRA group 1), ten who underwent subtrochanteric valgus osteotomy (SVO group 2), and 13 who underwent subtrochanteric valgus osteotomy with resection of the femoral head (SVO with FHR group 3). All patients were evaluated using the Caregiver Priorities and Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities (CPCHILD) and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). Significant improvements occurred in most CPCHILD and PedsQL subsection scores following surgery in all patients, without significant differences between the groups. There were 12 post-operative complications. Less severe complications were seen in group 1 than in groups 2 and 3. Salvage surgery appears to provide pain relief in patients with CP who have painful chronic dislocation of the hip. The three salvage procedures produced similar results, however, we recommend the use of PFRA as the complications are less severe. TAKE HOME MESSAGE Salvage surgery can be of benefit to patients with CP with chronic painful hip dislocation, but should be limited to selected patients considering complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of peripheral sigma-1 receptors (Sig-1Rs) in normal nociception and in pathologically induced pain conditions has not been thoroughly investigated. Since there is mounting evidence that Sig-1Rs modulate ischaemia-induced pathological conditions, we investigated the role of Sig-1Rs in ischaemia-induced mechanical allodynia (MA) and addressed their possible interaction with acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) and P2X receptors at the ischaemic site. METHODS We used a rodent model of hindlimb thrombus-induced ischaemic pain (TIIP) to investigate their role. Western blot was performed to observe changes in Sig-1R expression in peripheral nervous tissues. MA was measured after intraplantar (i.pl.) injections of antagonists for the Sig-1, ASIC and P2X receptors in TIIP rats or agonists of each receptor in naïve rats. RESULTS Sig-1R expression significantly increased in skin, sciatic nerve and dorsal root ganglia at 3 days post-TIIP surgery. I.pl. injections of the Sig-1R antagonist, BD-1047 on post-operative days 0-3 significantly attenuated the development of MA during the induction phase, but had no effect on MA when given during the maintenance phase (days 3-6 post-surgery). BD-1047 synergistically increased amiloride (an ASICs blocker)- and TNP-ATP (a P2X antagonist)-induced analgesic effects in TIIP rats. In naïve rats, i.pl. injection of Sig-1R agonist PRE-084 alone did not produce MA; but it did induce MA when co-administered with either an acidic pH solution or a sub-effective dose of αβmeATP. CONCLUSION Peripheral Sig-1Rs contribute to the induction of ischaemia-induced MA via facilitation of ASICs and P2X receptors. Thus, peripheral Sig-1Rs represent a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of ischaemic pain.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of dietary probiotic supplement and postmortem storage on meat quality of chicken breast during retail display. A total of 35 birds were randomly obtained from 3 feeding groups (control without probiotic supplement, 250 ppm Sporulin, and 500 ppm PoultryStar). The probiotic supplement had no influence on feed conversion ratio and body weight gain, as well as body weight at 29 and 44 d (P > 0.05). After slaughter, each side of the breast muscles (M. Pectoralis major) was assigned to either one d or 5 d of postmortem storage. Probiotic supplement had no influence on the rate of pH decline of chicken breast muscles during the initial 6 h postmortem (P > 0.05). No interactions between probiotic supplement and postmortem storage on meat quality were found (P > 0.05). Postmortem storage decreased drip loss from 25.30 to 18.05% (P < 0.05). Probiotics-fed chicken groups, particularly PoultryStar treatment, had a higher myofibrillar fragmentation index than the control group (P < 0.05). However, shear force values were not affected by the probiotic treatments. Decreases in color and lipid stabilities of breast muscles were found during display (P < 0.05), but were not affected by the probiotic supplement (P > 0.05). Our result suggests that probiotic supplement had no adverse impacts on proteolysis and oxidative changes during 5 d postmortem display storage.

Abstract
Background and Purpose 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is the most common microdeletion syndrome. Epilepsy and other neuropsychiatric (NP) manifestations of this genetic syndrome are not uncommon, but they are also not well-understood. We sought to identify the characteristics of epilepsy and other associated NP manifestations in patients with 22q11.2DS. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 145 child and adolescent patients (72 males and 73 females) with genetically diagnosed 22q11.2DS. The clinical data included seizures, growth chart, psychological reports, development characteristics, school performance, other clinical manifestations, and laboratory findings. Results Of the 145 patients with 22q11.2DS, 22 (15.2%) had epileptic seizures, 15 (10.3%) had developmental delay, and 5 (3.4%) had a psychiatric illness. Twelve patients with epilepsy were classified as genetic epilepsy whereas the remaining were classified as structural, including three with malformations of cortical development. Patients with epilepsy were more likely to display developmental delay (odds ratio=3.98; 95% confidence interval=1.5-10.5; p=0.005), and developmental delay was more common in patients with structural epilepsy than in those with genetic epilepsy. Conclusions Patients with 22q11.2DS have a high risk of epilepsy, which in these cases is closely related to other NP manifestations. This implies that this specific genetic locus is critically linked to neurodevelopment and epileptogenesis.
