Synthesis of rGO/CoFe2O4 Composite and Its Magnetorheological Characteristics

In this study, composite particles of rGO/CoFe2O4 were synthesized using a solvothermal method to fabricate a low-density magnetorheological (MR) material with enhanced sedimentation stability. The morphology and crystallographic features of rGO/CoFe2O4 were characterized via SEM, TEM, and XRD, and its magnetic properties were tested using VSM. The MR fluid was formulated by blending rGO/CoFe2O4 particles into silicone oil. Under different magnet strengths (H), a rotational rheometer was used to test its MR properties. Typical MR properties were observed, including shear stress, viscosity, storage/loss modulus, and dynamic yield stress (τdy) following the Herschel-Bulkley model reaching 200 Pa when H is 342 kA/m. Furthermore, the yield stress of the MR fluid follows a power law relation as H increases and the index changes from 2.0 (in the low H region) to 1.5 (in the high H region). Finally, its MR efficiency was calculated to be about 104% at H of 342 kA/m.

Synergistic Inclusion Effects of Hard Magnetic Nanorods on the Magnetomechanical Actuation of Soft Magnetic Microsphere-Based Polymer Composites

The magnetomechanical actuation of micropillars is developed for the contactless manipulation of miniaturized actuators and microtextured surfaces. Anisotropic geometry of micropillars can significantly enhance the magnetic actuation compared with their isotropic counterparts by directional stress distributions. However, this strategy is not viable for triangular micropillars owing to insufficient anisotropy. In this study, a significant improvement in the magnetic actuation of triangular micropillars using composite magnetic particles is reported. A minute and optimal amount of hard magnetic gamma-ferrite nanorods are hybridized with soft magnetic iron microspheres to generate synergistic effects of magnetic coupling and percolation phenomenon on the magnetic actuation of polymer composites. The addition of 1 wt% face-centered cubic-phased gamma-ferrite nanorods suppresses the magnetic coupling interference of body-centered cubic-phased iron microspheres. Furthermore, the nanorods reduce the percolation threshold by participating in the percolation of the microspheres. A systematic compositional study on the magnetization and magnetorheological properties reveals that the coupling effect dominates the percolation effect at a low magnetic field, whereas the percolation effect governs the magnetic actuation at a high magnetic field. This hybrid approach can help in designing material constituents for effective magnetic actuators and robotic systems that can sensitively respond to an external magnetic field.

Rheological Characteristics of Starch-Based Biodegradable Blends

Thermoplastic starch was blended with commercially available biodegradable polyesters of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) for its improved performance and processability. The morphology and elemental composition of these biodegradable polymer blends were observed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively, while their thermal properties were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal calorimetry. For rheological analysis, the steady shear and dynamic oscillation tests of three samples at various temperatures were investigated using a rotational rheometer. All three samples exhibited significant shear thinning at all measured temperatures, and their shear viscosity behavior was plotted using the Carreau model. The frequency sweep tests showed that the thermoplastic starch sample exhibited a solid state at all temperatures tested, whereas both starch/PBAT and starch/PBAT/PLA blend samples exhibited viscoelastic liquid behavior after the melting temperature such that their loss modulus at low frequencies was greater than the storage modulus, and inversion occurred at high frequencies (storage modulus > loss modulus).

Dual Electrorheological and Magnetorheological Behaviors of Poly(N-methyl aniline) Coated ZnFe2O4 Composite Particles

Magnetic/conducting polymeric hybrid core-shell typed zinc ferrite (ZnFe₂O₄)/poly(N-methyl aniline) (PMA) particles were fabricated and adopted as electrorheological (ER) and magnetorheological (MR) fluids, and their rheological properties were examined. Solvo-thermally synthesized ZnFe₂O₄ was coated with a conducting PMA through chemical oxidation polymerization. The size, shape, and chemical composition of the final core-shell shaped particles were scrutinized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. The crystal faces of the particles before and after coating with PMA were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The ZnFe₂O₄/PMA products were suspended in silicone oil to investigate the rheological response to electro- or magnetic stimuli using a rotating rheometer. The shear stresses were analyzed using the CCJ equation. The dynamic yield stress curve was suitable for the conductivity mechanism with a slope of 1.5. When magnetic fields of various intensities were applied, the flow curve was analyzed using the Hershel–Bulkley equation, and the yield stresses had a slope of 1.5. Optical microscopy further showed that the particles dispersed in insulating medium form chain structures under electric and magnetic fields. Via this core-shell fabrication process, not only spherical conducting particles were obtained but also their dual ER and MR responses were demonstrated for their wide potential applications.

An overview on the enhanced gas condensate recovery with novel and green methods

A consideration of the negative environmental aspects of fossil fuels has made natural gas the best choice to meet the human demand for energy. The condensate gas reservoir is one source of gases that tolerates skin problems (liquid blockage). Conventional methods for inhibiting or removing liquid blockages are momentary treatments, non-eco-friendly, and expensive. Therefore, new methods have been introduced, such as wettability alteration toward liquid repellency, renewable energies, thermochemical reactions and waves for heating reservoirs, and CO₂ injection. This paper reviews the methods for altering the wettability of porous media by fluorochemicals, fluorinated nanoparticles (NPs), and free fluorocarbon materials from natural substances. NPs, particularly silicon-based types, as a green, clean, and emerging technology that are more compatible with the environment, were investigated for their ability to alter the wettability and upgrade conventional materials, such as polymers and surfactants. The feasibility of using renewable energies, thermochemical reactions, and waves for heating the gas condensate reservoir to overcome the skin problem and return the reservoir to the reasonable and economical gas production is reviewed. Finally, CO₂ injection is introduced as a multi-purpose green method to enhance gas condensate recovery and allow CO₂ sequestration.

Surface modification of spent coffee grounds using phosphoric acid for enhancement of methylene blue adsorption from aqueous solution

In this study, the surface of the spent coffee grounds (SCG) was activated using phosphoric acid to increase the removal efficiency of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution, which is one of the harmful substances emitted in industrial processes. According to Fourier transform infra-red analysis, after phosphorylation of the SCG (PSCG), P = O group, P-O-C (aromatic) bond, P = OOH and P-O-P were newly introduced on the surface of the adsorbent, and the peaks of carboxyl groups and OH-group were large and broad. In addition, the surface area and mesopore range of the PSCG adsorbent were increased, and the structure changed, which enabled easy adsorption of MB. The process of adsorbing MB from aqueous solution using PSCG was more suitable for the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models, and the adsorption process was closer to chemisorption than physical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of PSCG was 188.68 mg/g. As a result of the reuse test, PSCG showed excellent performance with a high removal efficiency of 90% up to four consecutive uses. PSCG modified with phosphoric acid, an abundant lignocellulose-based biosorbent that is readily available everywhere, is a promising adsorbent capable of adsorbing MB in aqueous solution.

Dynamic Response of Polyindole Coated Zinc Ferrite Particle Suspension under an Electric Field

ZnFe2O4 particles initially synthesized through a simple solvothermal method were coated using polyindole (PIn) to prepare an actively controllable core-shell typed hybrid material under both electric and magnetic fields. An advantage of this process is not needing to add the stabilizers or surfactants commonly used for uniform coating when synthesizing core or shell-structured particles. The synthesized ZnFe2O4/PIn particles have a lower density than conventional magnetic particles and have suitable properties as electrorheological (ER) particles. The expected spherical shape of the particles was proven using both scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The chemical characterization was performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. To analyze the rheological properties, a ZnFe2O4/PIn based suspension was prepared, and dynamic rheological measurements were performed for different electric field strengths using a rotary rheometer. Both dynamic and elastic yield stresses of the ER fluid had a slope of 1.5, corresponding to the conductivity model. Excellent ER effect was confirmed through rheological analysis, and the prepared ER fluid had a reversible and immediate response to repeated electric fields.

Effect of drag-reducing polymer on blood flow in microchannels

Drag-reducing polymers (DRPs) can significantly improve blood circulation when added to blood at a nanomolar concentration, manifesting great potential for application in the biomedical field. In this work, hyaluronic acid (HA) was selected as a natural DRP, and its effects on blood microcirculation at different concentrations, flow rates, and channel geometry were studied in microchannels. The experimental results show that adding a small dose of HA can increase the velocity and shorten the thickness of the cell-free layer (CFL or cell depletion layer (CDL)) near the wall. After considering efficiency, our experiments determined 50 ppm addition of HA to be the most suitable amount for improving blood circulation. Our results demonstrate that HA has high efficiency in improving the circulation of blood flow and shed light on unveiling the mechanism of using natural DRPs to cure some cardiovascular diseases.

Artificial Neural Network to Forecast Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide in Sandstone and Carbonate Reservoirs

Polymer flooding is an important enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method with high performance which is acceptable and applicable on a field scale but should first be evaluated through lab-scale experiments or simulation tools. Artificial intelligence techniques are strong simulation tools which can be used to evaluate the performance of polymer flooding operation. In this study, the main parameters of polymer flooding were selected as input parameters of models and collected from the literature, including: polymer concentration, salt concentration, rock type, initial oil saturation, porosity, permeability, pore volume flooding, temperature, API gravity, molecular weight of the polymer, and salinity. After that, multilayer perceptron (MLP), radial basis function, and fuzzy neural networks such as the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system were adopted to estimate the output EOR performance. The MLP neural network had a very high ability for prediction, with statistical parameters of R² = 0.9990 and RMSE = 0.0002. Therefore, the proposed model can significantly help engineers to select the proper EOR methods and API gravity, salinity, permeability, porosity, and salt concentration have the greatest impact on the polymer flooding performance.

Magnetite/Poly(ortho-anisidine) Composite Particles and Their Electrorheological Response

Magnetic and semiconducting Fe3O4/poly(o-anisidine) (POA) core/shell composite particles were fabricated by an oxidation process using Fe3O4 synthesized separately. The dispersion stability in a liquid medium and the electrical conductivity of synthesized particles were improved because of the conductive POA polymeric shell. The morphological, microstructural, compositional/elemental, and thermal behaviors of the particles were characterized using SEM with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, TEM, XRD, and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. A smart electro-magneto-rheological suspension containing Fe3O4/POA particles with two functionalities, magnetism and conductivity, was prepared. Its electrorheological properties were investigated at different electric field strengths using a rotational rheometer. Without an electric field, the sample demonstrated typical Newtonian fluid behavior, as expected. However, while under the electric field, it exhibited a solid-like behavior, and the dynamic (or elastic) yield stress of the ER fluid increased linearly as a function of the electric field strength in a power-law function with an index of 2.0, following the polarization mechanism.

MGMT Promoter Methylation Status in Initial and Recurrent Glioblastoma: Correlation Study with DWI and DSC PWI Features

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

O⁶-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status in primary and recurrent glioblastoma may change during treatment. The purpose of this study was to correlate MGMT promoter methylation status changes with DWI and DSC PWI features in patients with recurrent glioblastoma after standard treatment.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Between January 2008 and November 2016, forty patients with histologically confirmed recurrent glioblastoma were enrolled. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the MGMT promoter methylation status for the initial and recurrent tumors: 2 groups whose MGMT promoter methylation status remained, group methylated (n = 13) or group unmethylated (n = 18), and 1 group whose MGMT promoter methylation status changed from methylated to unmethylated (n = 9). Normalized ADC and normalized relative CBV values were obtained from both the enhancing and nonenhancing regions, from which histogram parameters were calculated. The ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by post hoc tests were performed to compare histogram parameters among the 3 groups. The t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare parameters between group methylated and group methylated to unmethylated. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to measure the predictive performance of the normalized relative CBV values between the 2 groups.

RESULTS

Group methylated to unmethylated showed significantly higher means and 90th and 95th percentiles of the cumulative normalized relative CBV values of the nonenhancing region of the initial tumor than group methylated and group unmethylated (all P < .05). The mean normalized relative CBV value of the nonenhancing region of the initial tumor was the best predictor of methylation status change (P < .001), with a sensitivity of 77.78% and specificity of 92.31% at a cutoff value of 2.594.

CONCLUSIONS

MGMT promoter methylation status might change in recurrent glioblastoma after standard treatment. The normalized relative CBV values of the nonenhancing region at the first preoperative MR imaging were higher in the MGMT promoter methylation change group from methylation to unmethylation in recurrent glioblastoma.

Core-Shell Structured Magnetite-Poly(diphenylamine) Microspheres and Their Tunable Dual Response under Magnetic and Electric Fields

Core-shell type poly(diphenylamine)-coated magnetite (Fe₃O₄-PDPA) microspheres were designed and adopted as a novel actively tunable smart material which is responsive under both electric and magnetic fields. Their morphology, chemical structure, crystalline structure, and thermal properties were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and a thermal gravimetric analyzer. Their magnetic and dielectric properties were determined using vibrating-sample magnetometer and an LCR meter, respectively. They were dispersed in silicone oil and their electrorheological (ER) and magnetorheological (MR) responses under the electric and magnetic fields, respectively, were examined. The formation of chain structure of Fe₃O₄-PDPA based E/MR fluid under the application of electric field or magnetic field was observed by an optical microscopy and the sedimentation stability was observed by a Turbiscan optical analyzer system. It was observed that the yield stress, ER efficiency, and leakage current density increased with an increase in the particle concentration, while the slope of the electric field-dependent yield stress decreased. Several models such as the Bingham model, Herschel-Bulkley model, and Cho-Choi-Jhon equations were used to describe the shear stress curves of the ER fluid; the curves fitted well. For the dielectric properties, the two types of ER fluids tested displayed the same relaxation time and distribution; however, the one with the higher concentration had a higher dielectric constant and polarizability. The Fe₃O₄-PDPA based MR fluid (10 vol %) exhibited typical MR properties. In addition, the Herschel-Bulkley model matched well with the shear stress curves under a magnetic field.

Liposomal irinotecan plus fluorouracil/leucovorin versus FOLFIRINOX as the second-line chemotherapy for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer: a multicenter retrospective study of the Korean Cancer Study Group (KCSG)

Background

There is no clear consensus on the recommended second-line treatment for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer who have disease progression following gemcitabine-based therapy. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes of liposomal irinotecan (nal-IRI) plus fluorouracil/leucovorin (FL) and FOLFIRINOX (fluorouracil, leucovorin, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin) in patients who had failed on the first-line gemcitabine-based therapy.

Patients and methods

From January 2015 to August 2019, 378 patients with MPC who had received nal-IRI/FL (n = 104) or FOLFIRINOX (n = 274) as second-line treatment across 11 institutions were included in this retrospective study.

Results

There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between groups, except age and first-line regimens. With a median follow-up of 6 months, the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 3.7 months with nal-IRI/FL versus 4.6 months with FOLFIRINOX (P = 0.44). Median overall survival (OS) was 7.7 months with nal-IRI/FL versus 9.7 months with FOLFRINOX (P = 0.13). There was no significant difference in PFS and OS between the two regimens in the univariate and multivariate analyses. The subgroup analysis revealed that younger age (<70 years) was associated with better OS with FOLFIRINOX. In contrast, older age (≥70 years) was associated with better survival outcomes with nal-IRI/FL. Adverse events were manageable with both regimens; however, the incidence of grade 3 or higher neutropenia and peripheral neuropathy was higher in patients treated with FOLFIRINOX than with nal-IRI/FL.

Conclusions

Second-line nal-IRI/FL and FOLFIRINOX showed similar effectiveness outcomes after progression following first-line gemcitabine-based therapy. Age could be the determining factor for choosing the appropriate second-line therapy.

Magnetic Polymer Composite Particles: Design and Magnetorheology

As a family of smart functional hybrid materials, magnetic polymer composite particles have attracted considerable attention owing to their outstanding magnetism, dispersion stability, and fine biocompatibility. This review covers their magnetorheological properties, namely, flow curve, yield stress, and viscoelastic behavior, along with their synthesis. Preparation methods and characteristics of different types of magnetic composite particles are presented. Apart from the research progress in magnetic polymer composite synthesis, we also discuss prospects of this promising research field.

Melt Rheology and Mechanical Characteristics of Poly(Lactic Acid)/Alkylated Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanocomposites were synthesized by a solution blending and coagulation method using alkylated graphene oxide (AGO) as a reinforcing agent. Turbiscan confirmed that the alkylation of GO led to enhanced compatibility between the matrix and the filler. The improved dispersity of the filler resulted in superior interfacial adhesion between the PLA chains and AGO basal plane, leading to enhanced mechanical and rheological properties compared to neat PLA. The tensile strength and elongation at break, i.e., ductility, increased by 38% and 42%, respectively, at the same filler content nanocomposite (PLA/AGO 1 wt %) compared to nonfiller PLA. Rheological analysis of the nanocomposites in the molten state of the samples was performed to understand the filler network formed inside the matrix. The storage modulus increased significantly from PLA/AGO 0.5 wt % (9.6 Pa) to PLA/AGO 1.0 wt % (908 Pa). This indicates a percolation threshold between the two filler contents. A steady shear test was performed to examine the melt flow characteristics of PLA/AGO nanocomposites at 170 °C, and the viscosity was predicted using the Carreau-Yasuda model.

Magnetorheological Elastomers: Fabrication, Characteristics, and Applications

Magnetorheological (MR) elastomers become one of the most powerful smart and advanced materials that can be tuned reversibly, finely, and quickly in terms of their mechanical and viscoelastic properties by an input magnetic field. They are composite materials in which magnetizable particles are dispersed in solid base elastomers. Their distinctive behaviors are relying on the type and size of dispersed magnetic particles, the type of elastomer matrix, and the type of non-magnetic fillers such as plasticizer, carbon black, and crosslink agent. With these controllable characteristics, they can be applied to various applications such as vibration absorber, isolator, magnetoresistor, and electromagnetic wave absorption. This review provides a summary of the fabrication, properties, and applications of MR elastomers made of various elastomeric materials.

Agricultural biowaste, rice bran, as carbon source to enhance biomass and lipid production: analysis with various growth rate models

As a byproduct of agriculture, rice bran can be a good alternative carbon source to mass-produce microalgae and increase lipid content. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of rice bran extract (RBE) on the mass culture and oil content of microalgae. Various parameters were applied to the growth rate model to explain the dynamics of substrate inhibition and growth of microalgae. The rice bran contains 46.1% of carbohydrates, in which is 38.3% glucose, and is very suitable as a carbon source for microalgae growth. The culture with RBE had a four times higher biomass production than microalgae cultured on Jaworski's medium (JM) with a small amount of 1 g/L. In addition, for RBE, the lipid content was three times higher and saturated fatty acid was 3% lower than were those of JM. According to the above results, when Chlorella vulgaris is cultured using RBE, a high amount of biomass and high lipid content can be obtained with a small amount of RBE. RBE is a discarded waste and has a high content of glucose, so it can be replaced by an organic carbon source to increase microbial biomass growth and lipid content at low cost.

Synthesis and Electrorheological Response of Graphene Oxide/Polydiphenylamine Microsheet Composite Particles

Conducting graphene oxide/polydiphenylamine (GO/PDPA) microsheet nanocomposite particles were fabricated via in-situ oxidative polymerization using diphenylamine in the presence of GO. The morphological structures and dimensions of the fabricated GO/PDPA composites were evaluated using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Electrorheological (ER) responses and creep behaviors of an ER fluid consisting of the GO/PDPA composites when suspended in silicone oil were evaluated using a rotational rheometer under input electric field. Three different types of yield stresses were examined along with dielectric analysis, demonstrating their actively tunable ER behaviors.

Bio-Inspired Passion Fruit-like Fe3O4@C Nanospheres Enabling High-Stability Magnetorheological Performances

Magnetorheological (MR) fluids have been successfully utilized in versatile fields but are still limited by their relatively inferior long-term dispersion stability. Herein, bio-inspired passion fruit-like Fe₃O₄@C nanospheres were fabricated via a simple hydrothermal and calcination approach to tackle the settling challenge. The unique structures provide sufficient active interfaces for the penetration of carrier mediums, leading to preferable wettability between particles and medium oils. Compared with the bare Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle suspension, the resulting Fe₃O₄@C nanosphere-based MR fluid exhibits desirable stability and relatively low field-off viscosity even at a high particle concentration up to 35 vol %.

Poly(4-vinylphenol-co-methyl methacrylate)/Hafnium Oxide Nanocomposite Gate Insulators for Organic Thin-Film Transistors

We fabricate 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-Pn) thin-film transistors (TFTs) with nanocomposite insulators. The insulator layers consist of both poly(4-vinylphenol-co-methyl methacrylate) and high-dielectric constant hafnium oxide (HfO₂) nanoparticles. The HfO₂ nanoparticles are ball-milled for sufficient dispersion in a nanocomposite solution to enable solution process methods to be used in preparing the insulator layers. The nanocomposite insulators demonstrate high capacitances and improve the performance of TIPS-Pn TFTs. Nonetheless, particle aggregates are produced in the nanocomposites solution with high HfO₂ concentrations, generating detrimental effects on the dielectric properties and the TFT performance. Our experimental result implies that the optimum concentration of HfO₂ nanoparticles in a mixed solution will find to be ~11.5 wt%.

Pickering Emulsion Polymerized Polyaniline/Zinc-ferrite Composite Particles and Their Dual Electrorheological and Magnetorheological Responses

A functional raspberry-like core-shell composite particle consisting of a conducting polyaniline (PANI) core and magnetic zinc ferrite shell is synthesized by Pickering emulsion polymerization. The morphology and chemical structure of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite are evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. An electrorheological/magnetorheological fluid consisting of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite dispersed in silicone oil with a particle concentration of 5 vol % is fabricated. Its rheological characteristics under external electric and magnetic fields are investigated by using a rotational rheometer. Under the electric or magnetic field, the PANI/zinc-ferrite particles form chain-like structures, demonstrating a solid-like state.

Highly Tough, Biocompatible, and Magneto-Responsive Fe3O4/Laponite/PDMAAm Nanocomposite Hydrogels

Magneto-responsive hydrogels (MRHs) have attracted considerable attention in various applications owing to their smart response to an externally applied magnetic field. However, their practical uses in biomedical fields are limited by their weak mechanical properties and possible toxicity to the human body. In this study, tough, biocompatible, and magneto-responsive nanocomposite hydrogels (MR_NCHs) were developed by the in-situ free-radical polymerization of N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm) and laponite and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The effects of the concentrations of DMAAm, water, and laponite and Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the pre-gel solutions or mixtures on the viscoelastic and mechanical properties of the corresponding hydrogels were examined by performing rheological and tensile tests, through which the mixture composition producing the best MR_NCH system was optimized. The effects were also explained by the possible network structures of the MR_NCHs. Moreover, the morphology, chemical structure, and thermal and mechanical properties of the MR_NCHs were analyzed, while comparing with those of the poly(DMAAm) (PDMAAm) hydrogels and laponite/PDMAAm NCHs. The obtained optimal MR_NCH exhibited noticeable magnetorheological (MR) behavior, excellent mechanical properties, and good biocompatibility. This study demonstrates how to optimize the best Fe3O4/laponite/PDMAAm MR_NCH system and its potential as a soft actuator for the pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Electrorheological Characteristics of Poly(diphenylamine)/magnetite Composite-Based Suspension

Electro-responsive poly(diphenylamine)(PDPA)/Fe3O4 composite particles were prepared by the synthesis of PDPA particles using a chemical oxidative polymerization technique followed by loading nano-sized Fe3O4 particles onto PDPA via a chemical co-precipitation process. The morphological image of the PDPA/Fe3O4 particles was characterized by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The crystalline structure was scrutinized by X-ray diffraction. The rheological characteristics of the suspension composed of PDPA/Fe3O4 particles suspended in silicone oil were investigated by a rotation rheometer, demonstrating standard electrorheological (ER) characteristics with a dramatic increase in shear stress and dynamic moduli under the application of an electrical field strength. The shear stress curves under an electrical field could be described using the Bingham model and the yield stress showed a power-law relationship with the electric field strength with an exponent of 1.5, following the conduction model. Furthermore, the frequency-dependent dielectric behaviors of the PDPA/Fe3O4 ER suspension was tested using an inductance (L)-capacitance (C)-resistance (R) (LCR) meter. The dielectric properties were well described using the Cole-Cole equation and were consistent with the results of the ER experiments.

Effectiveness of Perioperative Immunologic Markers Monitoring for Predicting Early Acute Cellular Rejection After Living Donor Liver Transplantation

BACKGROUND

The objective of this study was to determine whether perioperative immunologic markers monitoring could predict early acute cellular rejection (ACR) after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

From September 2010 to June 2013, a total of 172 patients underwent LDLT at our transplant center. Of them, 26 patients were excluded because of infection. We retrospectively reviewed the remaining 146 patients. CD4 lymphocyte activity, T cell subsets test, and serum cytokine panel were checked on the day before transplantation and at 20 days after transplantation. These patients were divided into 3 groups: 1. normal liver function test (LFT) group; 2. increased LFT without rejection group; and 3. early ACR group. We excluded the increased LFT without rejection group in order to rule out multiple factors influencing immunologic factors.

RESULTS

CD4 lymphocyte activity (P = .004) was significantly increased while CD4+/CD25+/FOXP3+ cells (P < .001) and interleukin (IL)-17 (P = .002) levels were significantly decreased during the perioperative period. Pretransplant IL-6 (P = .014) and IL-17 (P = .029) levels in the early ACR group were significantly lower than those in the normal LFT group. The proportion of patients with increased IL-6 during perioperative period in the early ACR group was higher than that in the normal LFT group, although the difference was not statistically significant (P = .065).

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that IL-6 and IL-17 levels are associated with early ACR in LDLT patients. However, whether monitoring perioperative immunologic markers could predict early ACR remains unclear. Further prospective studies are needed to reach a definite conclusion.

Nanosilica Extracted from Hexafluorosilicic Acid of Waste Fertilizer as Reinforcement Material for Natural Rubber: Preparation and Mechanical Characteristics

Nanosilica particles are extracted from waste water containing a hexafluorosilicic acid discharged from Vietnamese fertilizer plants as an effective way not only to reduce waste water pollution but also to enhance the value of their waste water. Amorphous nanosilica particles are produced with diameters ranging from 40 to 60 nm and then adopted as a reinforcing additive for natural rubber (NR) composites. Morphological, mechanical, rheological, and thermal behaviors of the nanosilica-added NR composites are examined. Especially, mechanical behaviors of nanosilica-filled NR composites reach the optimum with 3 phr of nanosilica, at which its tensile strength, hardness, and decomposition temperature are improved by 20.6%, 7.1%, and 2.5%, respectively, compared with the pristine vulcanized NR. The improved mechanical properties can be explained by the tensile fractured surface morphology, which shows that the silica-filled NR is rougher than the pristine natural rubber sample.

Graphene Oxide and Its Inorganic Composites: Fabrication and Electrorheological Response

Composite particles associated with graphene oxide (GO) and inorganic materials provide the synergistic properties of an appropriate electrical conductivity of GO with the good dielectric characteristics of inorganic materials, making them attractive candidates for electrorheological (ER) materials. This review paper focuses on the fabrication mechanisms of GO/inorganic composites and their ER response when suspended in a non-conducting medium, including steady shear flow curves, dynamic yield stress, On-Off tests, and dynamic oscillation analysis. Furthermore, the morphologies of these composites, dielectric properties, and sedimentation of the ER fluids are covered.

Facile Synthesis of Solvent Cast Arabic Gum Coated Carbonyl Iron Microspheres and Their Magnetorheological Characteristics

Biopolymeric Arabic gum (AG) coated carbonyl iron (CI) particles were synthesized using a solvent casting process, and then their coating was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy analysis. Thermal property and chemical structure of the produced AG coated CI particles were investigated by thermalgravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, from the measurement using vibration sample magnetometer, magnetic properties including saturation magnetization were also observed. The magnetorheological (MR) fluid was prepared by dispersing CI/AG particles in silicone oil and then its typical MR behaviors of shear stress and shear viscosity were compared to those of the pure CI suspension. Sedimentation stability of the CI/AG based MR suspension was observed to be improved compared to that of the pure CI suspension according to the Turbiscan test.
