Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the relationship between early suicidality and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) onset in patients with physical injuries, focusing on age as a modifying factor. METHODS At baseline, 1014 patients were evaluated for suicidality, age divided into younger (<60 years) vs. older (≥60 years) groups, and potential covariates. PTSD was diagnosed at follow-up at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months, and then were categorized into early-onset (within the first six months after trauma) and delayed-onset (more than six months after trauma). Logistic regression models were used after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS Presence of suicidality at baseline was significantly associated with delayed-onset PTSD in older but not younger patients with significant interaction terms, whereas it was significantly associated with early-onset PTSD across all age groups. CONCLUSION Age-specific associations were found between suicidality and PTSD onset. The findings highlight the importance of early suicidality assessment, especially in older patients for ongoing monitoring and support, and underscore the critical need for early PTSD identification and intervention for all ages.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to evaluate the unexplored relationship between BDNF methylation, long-term outcomes, and its interaction with suicidal ideation (SI), which is closely associated with both BDNF expression and stroke outcomes. Methods A total of 278 stroke patients were assessed for BDNF methylation status and SI using suicide-related item in the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale at 2 weeks post-stroke. We investigated the incidence of composite cerebro-cardiovascular events (CCVEs) during an 8-14-year period after the initial stroke as long-term stroke outcome. We conducted Cox regression models adjusted for covariates to evaluate the association between BDNF methylation status and CCVEs, as well as its interaction with post-stroke SI at 2 weeks. Results Higher methylation status of CpG 1, 3, and 5, but not the average value, predicted a greater number of composite CCVEs during 8-14 years following the stroke. The associations between a higher methylation status of CpGs 1, 3, 5, and 8, as well as the average BDNF methylation value, and a greater number of composite CCVEs, were prominent in patients who had post-stroke SI at 2 weeks. Notably, a significant interaction between methylation status and SI on composite CCVEs was observed only for CpG 8. Conclusion The significant association between BDNF methylation and poor long-term stroke outcomes, particularly amplified in individuals who had post-stroke SI at 2 weeks, suggested that evaluating the biological marker status of BDNF methylation along with assessing SI during the acute phase of stroke can help predict long-term outcomes.

Abstract
AIM To compare the biomechanical properties of three different sternal closure techniques in a 3D-printed bone model of a sternum from a 30-kg dog. METHODS Median sternotomy was performed on a total of 90 three-dimensional (3D) copies of a polycarbonate (PC) model of a sternum, generated from the CT images of the sternum of a 30-kg German Shepherd dog. Three different methods were used to repair the sternotomies: polydioxanone suture (group PDS, n = 30), stainless steel bone staples (group SS, n = 30), and nitinol bone staples (group NS, n = 30). Each repair method was tested by applying tensile force in one of three ways (longitudinally, laterally, or torsionally) resulting in a sample size of n = 10 for each repair method-loading combination. In all experiments, the loads at 1-mm and 2-mm gap formation, failure, and the displacement at the failure point were measured. RESULTS In lateral distraction and longitudinal shear tests, NS and SS staple repairs required application of significantly greater force than PDS across all displacement criteria (1 and 2 mm). NS exhibited significantly greater failure load than PDS. In torsion tests, NS required significantly greater application of force compared to SS or PDS at all displacement criteria (1 and 2 mm) and exhibited a greater failure load than PDS. In terms of displacement at failure point, PDS suture showed more displacement than SS or NS across all experiments (laterally, longitudinally, torsionally). CONCLUSIONS In this study, bone staples were mechanically superior to PDS suture in median sternotomy closure using 3D-printed bone model in terms of 1-mm, 2-mm displacement loads, and displacement at failure. NS had a higher failure load than PDS under lateral, longitudinal, and torsional distraction. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These study results imply that bone staples can be considered as an alternative surgical method for median sternotomy closure in dogs.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the predictors of both early- and delayed-onset PTSD over a 2-year period following physical injuries. Methods Patients were recruited from a trauma center at a university hospital in South Korea (June 2015 ~ January 2021). At baseline, 1142 patients underwent comprehensive assessments including socio-demographic, pre-trauma, trauma-related, and peri-trauma evaluations. Diagnoses of acute stress disorder (ASD) and subthreshold ASD were also determined using the Clinician-administered PTSD Scale (CAPS). Follow-up assessments at three months included diagnoses of PTSD and subthreshold PTSD using CAPS, and stressful life events (SLEs), with additional evaluations at 6, 12, and 24 months. The analyzed sample comprised 1014 patients followed up at least once after the baseline and 3-month evaluations. PTSD diagnoses were categorized into early-onset (within the first six months after trauma) and delayed-onset (more than six months after trauma). Logistic regression models identified predictors for each group. Results Early-onset and delayed-onset PTSD were diagnosed in 79 and 35 patients, respectively. Early-onset PTSD was predicted by previous psychiatric disorders, previous traumatic events, ASD and subthreshold ASD diagnoses, and higher anxiety levels. In contrast, delayed-onset PTSD was linked to higher education, higher injury severity, and subthreshold PTSD and SLEs at 3-month follow-up. Conclusion Distinct predictors were found for early-onset and delayed-onset PTSD. The findings underscore the heterogeneous factors influencing the temporal development of PTSD post-trauma, and may provide valuable guidance for more targeted interventions and improved patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The presence of psychiatric disorders is widely recognized as one of the primary risk factors for suicide. A significant proportion of individuals receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment exhibit varying degrees of suicidal behaviors, which may range from mild suicidal ideations to overt suicide attempts. This study aims to elucidate the transdiagnostic symptom dimensions and associated suicidal features among psychiatric outpatients. METHODS The study enrolled patients who attended the psychiatry outpatient clinic at a tertiary hospital in South Korea (n = 1, 849, age range = 18-81; 61% women). A data-driven classification methodology was employed, incorporating a broad spectrum of clinical symptoms, to delineate distinctive subgroups among psychiatric outpatients exhibiting suicidality (n = 1189). A reference group of patients without suicidality (n = 660) was included for comparative purposes to ascertain cluster-specific sociodemographic, suicide-related, and psychiatric characteristics. RESULTS Psychiatric outpatients with suicidality (n = 1189) were subdivided into three distinctive clusters: the low-suicide risk cluster (Cluster 1), the high-suicide risk externalizing cluster (Cluster 2), and the high-suicide risk internalizing cluster (Cluster 3). Relative to the reference group (n = 660), each cluster exhibited distinct attributes pertaining to suicide-related characteristics and clinical symptoms, covering domains such as anxiety, externalizing and internalizing behaviors, and feelings of hopelessness. Cluster 1, identified as the low-suicide risk group, exhibited less frequent suicidal ideation, planning, and multiple attempts. In the high-suicide risk groups, Cluster 2 displayed pronounced externalizing symptoms, whereas Cluster 3 was primarily defined by internalizing and hopelessness symptoms. Bipolar disorders were most common in Cluster 2, while depressive disorders were predominant in Cluster 3. DISCUSSION Our findings suggest the possibility of differentiating psychiatric outpatients into distinct, clinically relevant subgroups predicated on their suicide risk. This research potentially paves the way for personalizing interventions and preventive strategies that address cluster-specific characteristics, thereby mitigating suicide-related mortality among psychiatric outpatients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biomarkers for depression in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) have not been identified. METHODS This study evaluated multiple serum biomarkers for depressive disorders after ACS. Thirteen serum biomarkers associated with seven functional systems, along with sociodemographic/clinical characteristics, were evaluated in 969 patients within 2 weeks after ACS onset (acute phase). In total, 711 patients were evaluated for depressive disorder using DSM-IV criteria 1 year later (chronic phase). Logistic regression was used for the analysis. RESULTS Depressive disorders were observed in 378 patients (39.0%) in the acute phase of ACS and 183 patients (25.7%) in the chronic phase. The weighted scores of five serum biomarkers (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, homocysteine, troponin I, and creatine kinase-MB) were significantly associated with depressive disorder diagnosis in the acute phase, and the weighted scores of three other biomarkers (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and homocysteine) were significantly associated with depressive disorders in the chronic phase, in a dose-dependent manner after adjusting for relevant covariates (all P-values <0.001). CONCLUSIONS The combination of several serum biomarkers exhibited robust associations with depressive disorders in both the acute and chronic phases of ACS.

Abstract
The triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) ratio and the rate coefficient (kTT) of TTA are key factors in estimating the contribution of triplet excitons to radiative singlet excitons in fluorescent TTA organic light-emitting diodes. In this study, deep learning models are implemented to predict key factors from transient electroluminescence (trEL) data using new numerical equations. A new TTA model is developed that considers both polaron and exciton dynamics, enabling the distinction between prompt and delayed singlet decays with a fundamental understanding of the mechanism. In addition, deep learning models for predicting the kinetic coefficients and TTA ratio are established. After comprehensive optimization inspired by photophysics, determination coefficient values of 0.992 and 0.999 are achieved in the prediction of kTT and TTA ratio, respectively, indicating a nearly perfect prediction. The contribution of each kinetic parameter of polaron and exciton dynamics to the trEL curve is discussed using various deep-learning models.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the relationship between suicidal ideation at baseline and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in individuals who have experienced physical injuries, with a specific focus on how this relationship is moderated by the patient's functioning level. METHODS Participants were consecutively recruited from a trauma center and prospectively followed for two years. At baseline, suicidal ideation was assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, and functioning level was evaluated using the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale. During the follow-up, PTSD diagnosis was established using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5. Binary and multinomial logistic regression analyses were employed to examine the associations between suicidal ideation, functioning level, and PTSD. RESULTS Of the 1014 participants analyzed, 114 (11.2%) developed PTSD, with early-onset observed in 79 (7.8%) and delayed-onset in 35 (3.5%) cases. Suicidal ideation at baseline was significantly associated with both early- and delayed-onset PTSD. Notably, higher functioning individuals with baseline suicidal ideation had an increased likelihood of developing delayed-onset PTSD, while this association was not significant in lower functioning individuals, with significant interaction terms. Additionally, suicidal ideation was a consistent predictor of early-onset PTSD across all functioning levels. CONCLUSION The impact of baseline suicidal ideation on PTSD varies depending on the individual's functioning level, with higher functioning individuals being more vulnerable to delayed-onset PTSD. These findings underscore the importance of considering functional status in the assessment and intervention of PTSD following physical trauma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biomarkers for suicidal behavior in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) have yet to be elucidated. This study aimed to identify a panel of serum biomarkers associated with suicidal ideation (SI) in patients with ACS. METHODS The study evaluated 969 patients within 2 weeks of ACS (acute phase) and 711 patients 12 months later (chronic phase). The evaluation included 14 serum biomarkers covering 7 functional systems, socio-demographic/clinical characteristics, and SI assessed by the "suicidal thoughts" item of the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. The results showed that 195 patients (20.1 %) had SI in the acute phase, and 87 patients (12.2 %) had SI in the chronic phase. RESULTS A combination of five serum biomarkers (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, folate, troponin I, and creatine kinase-MB) was significantly associated with SI in the acute phase, and a combination of three serum biomarkers (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and folate) was significantly associated with SI in the chronic phase in a clear dose-dependent manner (all P-values < 0.001) after adjustment for relevant covariates. DISCUSSION These findings suggest that the application of a combination of multiple serum biomarkers could improve the predictability of SI in patients with ACS at both acute and chronic phases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Korea has witnessed significant fluctuations in its suicide rates in recent decades, which may be related to modifications in its death registration system. This study aimed to explore the structural shifts in suicide trends, as well as accidental and ill-defined deaths in Korea, and to analyze the patterns of these changes. METHODS We analyzed age-adjusted death rates for suicides, deaths due to transport accidents, falls, drowning, fire-related incidents, poisonings, other external causes, and ill-defined deaths in Korea from 1997 to 2021. We identified change-points using the 'breakpoints' function from the 'strucchange' package and conducted interrupted time series analyses to assess trends before and after these change-points. RESULTS Korea's suicide rates had three change-points in February 2003, September 2008, and June 2012, characterized by stair-step changes, with level jumps at the 2003 and 2008 change-points and a sharp decline at the 2012 change-point. Notably, the 2003 and 2008 spikes roughly coincided with modifications to the death ascertainment process. The trend in suicide rates showed a downward slope within the 2003-2008 and 2008-2012 periods. Furthermore, ill-defined deaths and most accidental deaths decreased rapidly through several change-points in the early and mid-2000s. CONCLUSION The marked fluctuations in Korea's suicide rate during the 2000s may be largely attributed to improvements in suicide classification, with potential implications beyond socio-economic factors. These findings suggest that the actual prevalence of suicides in Korea in the 2000s might have been considerably higher than officially reported.

Abstract
Objective : This study aimed to identify serum biomarkers prospectively associated with remission at 12 weeks in out-patients with depressive disorders receiving stepwise psychopharmacotherapy, according to the main antidepressant used during the treatment period. Methods : This study included 1,024 depressive outpatients initially treated using antidepressant monotherapy, followed by alternating pharmacological strategies during the acute phase (3-12 weeks; 3-week interval). Fourteen serum biomarkers, sociodemographics, and clinical characteristics were evaluated at baseline. Based on the use frequency and mechanism of action, four main antidepressant types were distinguished: escitalopram, other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and mirtazapine. A Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score ≤ 7 was take to indicate remission. Results : Lower high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels were correlated with remission at 12 weeks for all antidepressant types. Lower interleukin (IL)-6 levels and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels were associated with remission using escitalopram and other SSRIs respectively. Lower IL-1β and leptin levels, predicted remission in association with SSRIs including escitalopram. For SNRIs, remission at 12 weeks was predicted by lower IL-4 and IL-10 levels. For mirtazapine, remission at 12 weeks was associated with lower leptin levels, and higher serotonin and folate levels. Conclusion : Baseline serum status, as estimated by nine serum markers, may help clinicians determine the most appropriate antidepressant to achieve remission in the acute phase of depression.

Abstract
Exposure-response prevention is an effective approach to treat anxiety disorders. Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is a promising treatment for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). New research has helped refine and update VRET. In this study, we introduce a form of VRET developed for patients suffering from PTSD after a traffic accident, and present two cases treated using this protocol. After 6 weeks of VRET treatment, the two participants not only improved their PTSD symptoms, but also improved their depressed mood, anxiety, and insomnia symptoms. Future studies of VRET for car accident-related PTSD should utilize a controlled design with randomization in order to account for numerous possible confounds.

Abstract
AIM We investigated the impact of sleep disturbance on immune status in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with consideration of the moderating role of circadian clock gene polymorphisms. METHODS A prospective longitudinal study design was used to collect information regarding sleep disturbance. Blood samples for immunologic assays were obtained the day before the first (baseline) and last cycles of 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) chemotherapy. Clinical sleep disturbance was compared between the two-time points using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score. We analysed single-nucleotide polymorphisms in rs2278749, rs3749474, rs2291738, rs17031614, and rs2287161. The dependent variables included changes in the percentages of CD4+, CD8+, CD19+, and CD16/56+ lymphocytes between the two-time points. The results were analysed using moderated regression analysis; the p-values were adjusted using the false discovery rate. RESULTS Among the 104 patients, no significant dyadic associations were observed between changes in lymphocyte percentages and the PSQI global score. However, the moderated regression analysis revealed five significant associations (rs2287161 with CD8+, rs2278749 and rs2291738 with CD19+, and rs17031614 with CD4+ and CD16/56+ lymphocytes). The inclusion of each interaction resulted in a significant increase (5.7-10.7%) in the variance explained by changes in lymphocyte percentage. CONCLUSION Patients with specific circadian gene allele types may be more susceptible to immune dysregulation when experiencing sleep disturbances. Considering that sleep disturbance is a modifiable factor that can impact immune regulation, it is essential to prioritise the management of sleep disturbances in CRC patients receiving FOLFOX chemotherapy.

Abstract
Periventricular heterotopia (PH) is a developmental malformation in the brain. Because the clinical symptoms are heterogeneous, few studies have investigated the psychiatric symptoms associated with PH. We describe the case of a 17-year-old male with bipolar disorder (BD), who had been treated for attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental delay in childhood. He had experienced depression for 1 year and was admitted to the emergency room following a suicide attempt. He was admitted to the psychiatric ward for further evaluation and treatment for elated mood, decreased need for sleep, increased sexuality, and delusion. The patient was diagnosed with BP-I disorder and PH via brain magnetic resonance imaging. After combined treatment with valproic acid and aripiprazole, his manic symptoms stabilized. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an adolescent PH case with a history of early onset BD and ADHD in childhood.

Abstract
Biomarkers of suicidal behavior (SB), particularly peripheral biomarkers, may aid in the development of preventive and intervention strategies. The peripheral biomarkers of SB should be easily accessible, cost-effective, and minimally invasive. To identify peripheral biomarkers of SB, we summarized the current knowledge related to SB biomarkers with a focus on suicidal outcomes (suicidal ideation [SI], suicide risk [SR], suicide attempt [SA], and suicide death [SD]), measured site (center or periphery), and study design (cross-sectional or longitudinal). We also evaluated the central findings to validate the findings of peripheral biomarkers of SB. We found reduced peripheral interleukin (IL)-2 levels in individuals with a recent SA, higher cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) IL-6 levels in patients with a current SR and future SD, higher CSF tumor necrosis factor-α levels for current and future SRs, higher high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels and lower peripheral total cholesterol levels for recent SAs, lower peripheral 5-HT levels for present SR, and a lower folate level for future SR and SA within 1 year. Previous studies have shown inconsistent associations of low peripheral leptin levels with SR and recent SA; therefore, further study is required. Given the multiple determinants of SB and weak associations with single biological markers, combinations of potential biological markers rather than single markers may improve the screening, diagnosis, and prediction of SB.

Abstract
Introduction Suicide is a major concern for patients with recent-onset schizophrenia. We hypothesized that preserved cognitive function might be associated with a higher level of suicidality in patients with schizophrenia. We investigated the associations between cognitive function and suicidal ideation (SI) in young patients recently diagnosed with a psychotic disorder. Methods This study analyzed data from a naturalistic clinical cohort study that comprised 402 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Patients with a treatment duration of ≤5 years and an age range of 15-39 years were enrolled. Participants were categorized into two groups based on SI as assessed by the Columbia Suicidal Severity Rating Scale. We collected demographic and clinical data and administered psychiatric, neurocognitive, and social cognitive measures. Results Among participants, 52% reported experiencing SI. Patients with SI were significantly younger and had a longer duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) than those without it. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale-general psychopathology score was significantly higher in the SI group. Scores on the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, Perceived Stress Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Hopelessness Scale were significantly higher among patients with SI, while scores on the Subjective Well-being Under Neuroleptics-Short Form and Brief Resilience Scale were significantly lower compared to those without it. Patients with SI demonstrated significantly higher scores on the verbal and visual learning test, false belief task, picture stories task, and Controlled Oral Word Association Test. They also completed the Trail Making Test (TMT) parts A and B in significantly less time than those without it. After adjusting for age, DUP, and scores on the BDI, group differences in scores on the verbal and visual learning tests, TMT (parts A and B), and the false belief task, and the picture story task remained significant. Discussion Our results suggest that along with traditional risk factors, better cognitive function may also be a major risk factor for suicidality in patients with schizophrenia. Providing psychological support and cognitive interventions is essential for young patients with recent-onset schizophrenia spectrum disorders, particularly those with high levels of depression, hopelessness, perceived stress, low resilience, and good cognitive function.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation contributes to the pathophysiology of various mental illnesses including schizophrenia. We investigated peripheral inflammatory cytokines as a biomarker for predicting symptomatic remission in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. The study included 224 patients aged 15-60 years who fulfilled the criteria for schizophrenia spectrum disorder with a treatment duration ≤6 months. Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) -α, interferon-γ, interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-12 were measured. Psychotic symptoms, depressive symptoms, and general functioning were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, and Personal and Social Performance scale, respectively. Duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) was also recorded. We investigated the factors associated with remission for each sex in logistic regression analysis. In total, 174 patients achieved remission at the 6-month follow-up (females, 83.5%; males, 70.9%). Remission was associated with older age and lower BDI scores in male patients and with lower TNF-α levels and shorter DUP in female patients. Our findings suggest that peripheral inflammatory cytokines may impede early symptomatic remission in female patients with schizophrenia. In addition, depressive symptoms in males and long DUP in females may be poor prognostic factors for early remission in patients with first-episode psychosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to identify factors related to loneliness during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and focused on how the fear of COVID-19 infection affects loneliness and the conditional effect of gratitude as a moderator in the relationship among the fear of COVID-19, anxiety, and loneliness. METHODS For the analysis of this study, a survey was conducted among 1,500 individuals aged 19 to 69 years living in three metropolitan areas in South Korea. Questionnaires included sociodemographic data, psychological experience and stress associated with COVID-19, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7, UCLA Loneliness Scale-3, and Gratitude Questionnaire-6. An analysis was conducted by applying SPSS PROCESS macro models 4 and 7. RESULTS First, anxiety mediated the relationship between the fear of COVID-19 infection and loneliness. Second, the effect of the fear of COVID-19 infection on loneliness through anxiety was moderated by gratitude. The higher the gratitude, the more the fear of COVID-19 infection is buffered in the path to anxiety, and the lower the indirect effect on loneliness. CONCLUSION This suggests that in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, interventions for psychological problems such as anxiety and loneliness can be carried out through gratitude, a significant protective variable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and suicidal ideation (SI) are common in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study investigated the associations of OCS and serum cortisol levels with SI, and further evaluated the possible modifying effects of cortisol on the associations between OCS and SI in acute and chronic phases of ACS. METHODS In total, 969 ACS patients were recruited from a tertiary university hospital in Korea within 2 weeks of disease onset and evaluated in terms of OCS (using the OCS dimension of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised), serum cortisol levels, and SI (using the "suicidal thoughts" item of the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale). Covariates included sociodemographics, depression, vascular risk factors, and disease severity. After 1 year, 711 patients were re-evaluated in terms of SI. Logistic regression analysis was performed with adjustment for covariates. RESULTS Higher OCS was significantly associated with SI both at baseline and follow-up. Serum cortisol showed no such association, but modified the association between OCS and SI. That was the associations were significant only in the higher but not in the lower serum cortisol levels, with significant interaction terms after adjusted for relevant covariates. CONCLUSION Evaluating OCS and serum cortisol levels at the acute phase could improve the accuracy of clinical predictions of SI both in the acute and chronic phases of ACS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study characterized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination behavior in the Korean general population using cluster analysis and explored related psychological factors. METHODS We categorized 1,500 individuals based on their attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination using hierarchical clustering and identified their level of vaccine acceptance. We examined the associations between vaccine acceptance and behavioral and psychological characteristics. RESULTS Clustering revealed three groups according to vaccine acceptance: 'totally accepting' (n = 354, 23.6%), 'somewhat accepting' (n = 523, 34.9%), and 'reluctant' (n = 623, 41.5%). Approximately 60% of all participants who belonged to the 'totally accepting' and 'somewhat accepting' groups were willing to receive a COVID-19 vaccine despite concerns about its side effects. High vaccine acceptance was associated with older age, regular influenza vaccination, and trust in formal sources of information. Participants with high vaccine acceptance had higher levels of gratitude, extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, and lower levels of depression, anxiety, and neuroticism. CONCLUSIONS People weighed the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination against the risk of side effects when deciding to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Our findings also indicate that this vaccination behavior may be affected by coping mechanisms and psychological factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Predictive values of multiple serum biomarkers for suicidal behaviours (SBs) have rarely been tested. This study sought to evaluate and develop a panel of multiple serum biomarkers for predicting SBs in outpatients receiving a 12-month pharmacotherapy programme for depressive disorders. METHODS At baseline, 14 serum biomarkers and socio-demographic/clinical characteristics including previous suicidal attempt and present suicidal severity were evaluated in 1094 patients with depressive disorders without a bipolar diagnosis. Of these, 884 were followed for increased suicidal severity and fatal/non-fatal suicide attempt outcomes over a 12-month treatment period. Individual and combined effects of serum biomarkers on these two prospective SBs were estimated using logistic regression analysis after adjustment for relevant covariates. RESULTS Increased suicidal severity and fatal/non-fatal suicide attempt during the 12-month pharmacotherapy were present in 155 (17.5%) and 38 (4.3%) participants, respectively. Combined cortisol, total cholesterol, and folate serum biomarkers predicted fatal/non-fatal suicide attempt, and these with interleukin-1 beta and homocysteine additionally predicted increased suicidal severity, with clear gradients robust to adjustment (p values < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Application of multiple serum biomarkers could considerably improve the predictability of SBs during the outpatient treatment of depressive disorders, potentially highlighting the need for more frequent monitoring and risk appraisal.

Abstract
Objectives This study examined the associations between Internet addiction and suicide and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among South Korean adolescents. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1694 Korean adolescents. The suicidal Ideation Questionnaire and Deliberate Self- Harm Inventories were used to identify high-risk suicide and NSSI groups, respectively. Internet addiction was assessed using the Internet Addiction Scale. Other questionnaires included sociodemographic data, perceived academic stress, and daily life-related factors. We also performed a logistic regression analysis using the high suicide risk and NSSI groups as dependent variables. Results The high suicide risk and NSSI prevalence rates among participants were 11.8% and 28.3%, respectively. A multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that Internet addiction is associated with higher suicide risk and NSSI. Additionally, being female and academic stress were significant suicide risk factors, while male participants had a higher NSSI prevalence. Conclusion Our results suggest that monitoring adolescents' Internet use and providing education to prevent Internet addiction would lower high suicide and NSSI risk. Moreover, suicide and NSSI risk screening in adolescents with Internet addiction and providing suitable interventions will be essential for the preventing suicide and NSSI.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and related factors in individuals with mental disorders in Korea. Methods We surveyed 572 individuals with mental disorders about their attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination using a 7-item self-rating questionnaire on vaccine acceptance and hesitancy. We categorized the respondents into groups based on their level of vaccine acceptance using hierarchical clustering. In addition, we evaluated the respondents' vaccination status and trust in sources of information regarding COVID-19 vaccines, and assessed their psychological characteristics using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Gratitude Questionnaire-6, and Big Five Inventory-10. Results Clustering revealed three groups according to vaccine acceptance: 'totally accepting' (n= 246, 43.0%), 'somewhat accepting' (n= 184, 32.2%), and 'hesitant' (n= 142, 24.8%) groups. Three quarters of all participants, who belonged to the 'totally accepting' or 'somewhat accepting' groups, were willing to receive a COVID-19 vaccine despite concerns about its side effects. Individuals in the high vaccine acceptance group were older (F= 12.52, p< 0.001), more likely to receive the influenza vaccine regularly, and more likely to trust formal information sources. Additionally, they had higher levels of gratitude (F= 21.00, p< 0.001) and agreeableness (F= 4.50, p= 0.011), and lower levels of depression (χ2= 11.81, p= 0.003) and neuroticism (F= 3.71, p= 0.025). Conclusion The present study demonstrated that individuals with mental disorders were generally willing to receive COVID-19 vaccination. However, they weighed its need and effectiveness against potential side effects before coming to a decision. It is important to understand the behavioral and psychological characteristics associated with vaccine acceptance, to effectively communicate its importance to individuals with mental disorders.

Abstract
Although drugs such as acetaminophen, opioids, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are commonly used for pain management, the side effects of these drugs such as hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, nausea, and vomiting, can not be neglected. Therefore, combinations of analgesics with different mechanisms raise the possibility of developing novel analgesics. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate whether DW-1021, the ionic complex of pelubiprofen (NSAID) and tramadol (opioid), has synergic antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects in nociceptive as well as inflammation-induced nociceptive models compared to pelubiprofen- or tramadol-only administration. Strong synergistic antinociceptive efficacy of DW-1021 was observed in the mouse writhing test and von Frey paw withdrawal threshold test in the carrageenan-induced rats. The hot plate test in mice and the Randall-Selitto mechanical paw pressure test in carrageenan-induced rats revealed that DW-1021 had a preferable effect on relieving pain to pelubiprofen, but not as much as tramadol. In the carrageenan-induced rats, DW-1021 had a more potent effect on reducing paw inflammation (paw volume, width, and thickness) via the suppression of PGE2 production than tramadol, but less than that of pelubiprofen. Taken together, our results suggest that the administration of DW-1021, a combination of pelubiprofen and tramadol, exerted a potent effect and can be used as a potential therapeutic agent for relieving pain and inflammation.

Abstract
The roles of inflammatory markers in predicting the response to antidepressants are controversial. The levels of inflammatory markers increase with age. Here, we compared the associations of inflammatory markers with remission during 12-week pharmacotherapy according to patient age. Higher high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels were associated with non-remission in younger, but not older, patients. However, higher interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 levels were associated with non-remission in all patients, regardless of age. Differential associations were observed between inflammatory markers and remission, according to patient age. Patient age should be considered when predicting the response to antidepressants based on serum hsCRP level.

Abstract
The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been implicated in regulating resistance to the effects of acute uncontrollable stress. We previously showed that mPFC-lesioned animals exhibit impaired object recognition memory after acute exposure to a brief stress that had no effect in normal animals. Here, we used designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs to determine how modulating mPFC activity affects recognition-memory performance under stressful conditions. Specifically, animals with chemogenetic excitation or inhibition of the mPFC underwent either a brief ineffective stress (20-min restraint + 20 tail shocks) or a prolonged effective stress (60-min restraint + 60 tail shocks). Subsequent recognition memory tests showed that animals with chemogenetic mPFC inhibition exposed to brief stress showed impairment in an object recognition memory task, whereas those with chemogenetic mPFC excitation exposed to prolonged stress did not. Thus, the present findings the decreased mPFC activity exacerbates acute stress effects on memory function whereas increased mPFC activity counters these stress effects provide evidence that the mPFC bidirectionally modulates stress resistance.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: HER2 (Human epithelial growth factor receptor 2)-targeting therapies have been approved for patients with HER2-positive breast and gastric cancer and use have been attempted in various solid tumor types, including biliary tract cancer. However, resistance mechanism remains as a major challenge of HER2-targeting therapies. YAP (Yes-associated protein) is a major downstream effector of Hippo pathway, and it plays an essential role in cancer cell proliferation, survival and differentiation. Moreover, YAP is emerging as a key player of resistance mechanism of cytotoxic and targeted drugs. Yap is also an important immunosuppressive molecule as it works as a negative regulator of T cell tumor infiltration. In this study, we intend to elucidate the role of YAP in mechanism of trastuzumab resistance and T cell immune response in HER2-positive cancer cells.
Methods: We established four trastuzumab-resistant (HR) cell lines (N87HR, SNU216HR, SNU2670HR and SNU2773HR) from HER2-postive gastric and biliary tract cancer cell lines. To inhibit the function of YAP, siRNA and Verteporfin (YAP-TEAD inhibitor) were used. MTT assay, cell cycle analysis, western blot and migration assay were performed to analyze the antitumor effects through YAP downregulation. In order to evaluate immune-modulation by YAP, human PBMC co-culture was used and immune markers were analyzed by RT-PCR and flow cytometry. Mouse xenograft models were established using SNU2773 and SNU2773HR cells.
Results: We confirmed that the expressions of pYAP and YAP were elevated in HR cells (SNU216HR, SNU2670HR and SNU2773HR) compared to parental cells. Reducing the expressed YAP in HR cells inhibited tumor cell growth and migration and induced apoptosis. Immune suppression markers such as PD-L1, CD155, and galectin-9 were effectively decreased, while CD80, a stimulation marker, was increased by verteporfin treatment. Also, when YAP was decreased, CCL5 and CXCL10, well known CD8+ T cell recruitment cytokines, were increased. In HR cells treated with siYAP and verteporfin, there was a trend of increasing CD4+ and CD8+ T cells when co-culture with PBMC. In vivo experiment data showed greater tumor growth inhibition effects with SNU2773HR than SNU2773 xenograft models when treated with verteporfin.
Conclusion: The expression of YAP is elevated in trastuzumab-resistant (HR) cells and inhibition of YAP shows anti-tumor effects and activation of T cell responses. Collectively, our data suggests that the inhibition of YAP is one of many promising strategies to overcome trastuzumab resistance and T cell regulatory mechanisms in HER2-positive cancers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated associations of life stressors and serum ghrelin levels with suicidal ideation (SI), and evaluated the potential mediating effect of ghrelin on associations between life stressors and SI in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS In total, 969 ACS patients recruited from a tertiary university hospital in Korea within 2 weeks of disease onset were evaluated in terms of life stressors (using the List of Threatening Events Questionnaire), serum ghrelin levels, and SI (using the "suicidal thoughts" item of the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale). Covariates included sociodemographics, depression, vascular risk factors, and disease severity. After 1 year, 711 patients were re-evaluated in terms of SI; logistic regression was performed with adjustment for covariates. RESULTS Life stressors were significantly associated with SI at baseline and follow-up. Serum ghrelin showed no such associations, but high levels thereof mediated associations of life stressors with SI; significant interaction terms were also observed after adjustment for covariates. CONCLUSION By evaluating life stressors and serum ghrelin levels, clinical prediction of SI in the acute and chronic phases of ACS could be improved.

Abstract
Direct exploring the electroluminescence (EL) of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is a challenge due to the complicated processes of polarons, excitons, and their interactions. This study demonstrated the extraction of the polaron dynamics from transient EL by predicting the recombination coefficient via artificial intelligence, overcoming multivariable kinetics problems. The performance of a machine learning (ML) model trained by various EL decay curves is significantly improved using a novel featurization method and input node optimization, achieving an R2 value of 0.947. The optimized ML model successfully predicts the recombination coefficients of actual OLEDs based on an exciplex-forming cohost, enabling the quantitative understanding of the overall polaron behavior under various electrical excitation conditions.

Abstract
Objective This study investigated the effectiveness of switching to once-monthly long-acting injectable (LAI) aripiprazole from other second-generation antipsychotics including LAI paliperidone palmitate in both recent-onset and chronic schizophrenia patients. Methods This was a 24-week prospective, open-label, flexible dose-switching study in patients with schizophrenia. Scores on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Personal and Social Performance (PSP) scale, Clinical Global Impression (CGI), Subjective Well-being Under Neuroleptics-Short Form (SWN-K), and a computerized emotional recognition test (ERT) were evaluated. Subjects were divided into two groups (recent onset and chronic) based on 5 years' duration of the illness. Results Among the 82 patients participating, 67 (81.7%) completed the 24-week study. The discontinuation rate after switching to LAI aripiprazole did not differ according to clinical characteristics including type of previous antipsychotics. Scores on the PANSS, PSP, SWN-K, CGI, and ERT were significantly improved after a switch to LAI aripiprazole without exacerbation of metabolic parameters and bodyweight. The improvements in the PANSS, PSP, and CGI scores were significantly greater in patients with recent-onset than in those with chronic schizophrenia; the improvement in metabolic parameters was significantly greater in the latter group. Conclusion High rates of successful switching to LAI aripiprazole from other antipsychotics suggest its good tolerability and effectiveness. Improvements in psychopathology and social functioning were more evident in patients with recent- onset schizophrenia, and improvements in metabolic abnormalities were more prominent in patients with chronic schizophrenia.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects of dietary habits on general and abdominal obesity in community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder according to sex. Methods A total of 270 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder registered at mental health welfare centers and rehabilitation facilities were recruited. General obesity was defined as a body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2, and abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumstance ≥ 90 cm in men and ≥ 85 cm in women. Dietary habits were evaluated using dietary guidelines published by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare. Demographic and clinical characteristics along with dietary habits and information related to obesity were collected. Factors related to obesity were evaluated separately by sex. Results Dietary habits differed according to sex, in that scores for healthy eating habits were lower in men than in women. In men, the prevalences of general and abdominal obesity were 17.0% and 37.3%, respectively. In women, the prevalences of general and abdominal obesity were 23.1% and 38.5%, respectively. Regression analysis showed that the scores of regular eating habits were negatively associated with general and abdominal obesity in men, and the scores of healthy eating habits were negatively associated with general and abdominal obesity in women. Conclusion Among patients with schizophrenia, regular eating habits might reduce the risk of obesity in men, and healthy eating habits might reduce the risk of obesity in women. Nutrition education should be provided to community- dwelling patients with schizophrenia to prevent obesity in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate associations of serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and social support (SS) levels with suicidal ideation (SI), and to evaluate potential modifying effects of SS on the associations between serum hsCRP levels and SI in two longitudinal cohorts with cardio-/cerebrovascular diseases. METHODS 1152 acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and 423 stroke patients were recruited at baseline within 2 weeks of disease onset, and evaluated for: i) serum hsCRP levels; ii) SS by the Social Support Scale and Social Undermining Scale; iii) SI by the "suicidal thoughts" item of the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale; and iv) covariates including socio-demographics, depression, vascular risk factors, and index disease severity. At 12-month follow-up, SI was re-evaluated. Logistic regression models were used to adjust for potential covariates. RESULTS In the ACS cohort, higher serum hsCRP and lower SS levels were significantly associated with SI at baseline; and only lower SS levels were significantly associated with SI at follow-up. In the stroke cohort, lower SS levels were significantly associated with SI at baseline; but no other association was found. Associations of serum hsCRP levels with SI at both baseline and follow-up were only significant at higher SS levels with significant interaction terms in both cohorts. LIMITATIONS This study evaluated SI, but not suicide attempts or death; it also used a single-center design. CONCLUSIONS By considering SS evaluations with routine serum hsCRP levels in cardio-/cerebrovascular disease, clinical prediction of SI both at acute and chronic phases of the diseases might be improved.

Abstract
404 Background: DNA damage response (DDR) gene alterations are observed in 27% of gastric cancer (GC), therefore, targeting DDR might be an interesting strategy in GC. Olaparib plus paclitaxel showed numerically improved overall survival (OS) compared to paclitaxel in 2L GC patients (pts), even though it did not meet the endpoint. (Lancet Oncol 2017). Besides DNA damage repair, olaparib induces immune modulation. The role of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) is established in 1L and 3L+ GC. The combination of cytotoxic chemotherapy, DDR acting agent and ICI might have synergistic effects in GC, which has not been tested in clinical studies. Here, we report biomarker-oriented phase II study of paclitaxel/olaparib/durvalumab combination in 2L GC. (NCT03579784). Methods: Advanced GC pts who have failed to 1L chemotherapy were enrolled. During 1st cycle, paclitaxel (80 mg/m2, D1, 8, 15 Q 4wk) and olaparib (150mg bid, D1-28) was administered. From 2nd cycle, durvalumab (1500 mg, D1 Q 4wk) was added on them. Tumor biopsy (pretreatment, after 1st cycle, at disease progression) and blood collection (every cycle) was mandatory. Primary endpoint was the disease control rate (DCR). Secondary endpoints included ORR, DoR, PFS, OS and safety. For biomarker study, multiplex IHC, NGS, ctDNA, and cytokines and angiogenic factors analysis were performed. Efficacy analysis set (ES) and safety analysis set (SS) were defined as pts who underwent at least one tumor assessment and all pts who received cycle1 day1 or more, respectively. Results: Fifty pts were enrolled (6 screening fail or withdrawal of consent, 44 in SS, 38 in ES) HER2+ GC were 13.2%. Among 38 in ES, DCR and ORR were 84.1% (95% CI, 72.5-95.7) and 39.5% (95% CI, 24.0-55.0) (1 CR, 14 PR and 17 SD). PFS, DoR and OS were 6.7 (95% CI, 4.5-10.3), 6.5 (95% CI, 5.1-10.7) and 11.4 (95% CI, 9.2-13.2) months. Homologous recombination repair (HRR) genetic alterations (9.6 vs. 5.9 in PFS, p=0.037), high CD8/CD3 ratio (8.8 vs. 3.7 in PFS, p=0.008), high PD-L1 (CPS≥10) (9.6 vs 5.1 in PFS, p=0.031), low ATM IHC (13.3 vs. 9.8 in OS, p=0.066), and low serum IL-6 (12.9 vs. 8.3 in OS, p=0.001) were associated with prolonged PFS or OS. In SS, most adverse events (AEs) were mild, and Gr 3/4 leukopenia and anemia were observed in 52.2% and 31.8%. There were no treatment related AEs resulted in study discontinuation. Conclusions: Paclitaxel/olaparib/durvalumab is a promising combination in 2L GC, and is worth to be further explored, especially in biomarker-enriched patients with HRR, specific T-cells subsets, high PD-L1, low ATM and IL-6. Abstract
Introduction This study investigated the potential modifying effects of the serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (sBDNF) level on the association between BDNF methylation status and long-term cardiovascular outcomes in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. Methods From 2006 to 2012, hospitalized ACS patients were consecutively recruited. The sBDNF level and BDNF methylation status were assessed at baseline in 969 patients who were followed up for major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) over 5-12 years, until 2017 or death. Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to compare the time to first composite or individual MACEs between individuals with lower and those with higher average BDNF methylation levels in the low and high sBDNF groups, respectively. The modifying effects of the sBDNF and average BDNF methylation levels on first composite and individual MACEs were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models after adjusting for potential covariates. Results In the low sBDNF group, a higher average BDNF methylation level was linked to an increase in composite MACEs independent of confounding variables, but not in the high sBDNF group [HR (95 percent CI) = 1.04 (0.76-1.44)]. The interaction effect between the sBDNF and average BDNF methylation levels on composite MACEs was significant after adjusting for covariates (P = 0.008). Conclusion Combining the BDNF methylation status and sBDNF levels may help identify ACS patients who are likely to have unfavorable clinical outcomes.

AIM To investigate group metacognitive training and cognitive-behavioural therapy (MCT/CBT) prospectively in a young population with various psychiatric disorders, including psychotic and mood disorders. METHODS This was a prospective study to investigate the effectiveness of group MCT/CBT on quality of life, psychotic symptoms, depression, self-esteem, perceived stress, social function and social cognition. The objective measures included the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), clinical global impression (CGI), personal and social performance scale for social functioning, a computerized continuous performance test for sustained attention and a computerized emotional recognition test for social cognition. Self-report measures administered included the Subjective Well-being under Neuroleptics for quality of life, Ambiguous Intentions Hostility Questionnaire for suspiciousness, Drug Attitude Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Perceived Stress Scale, Brief Resilience Scale, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and visual analogue scale for the EQ-5D. RESULTS Among 110 young patients with early psychosis and mood disorders who participated, 82 (74.5%) completed the study. Social functioning, quality of life, self-esteem, resilience, depression, suspiciousness, social cognition, sustained attention and scores on the PANSS and CGI improved significantly after completing group MCT/CBT. Perceived stress, resilience and suspiciousness improved significantly only in participants with a non-psychotic disorder. Improvements in subjective well-being of the participants were associated with increases in self-esteem and resilience and decreases in depression and perceived stress. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that group transdiagnostic MCT/CBT for young patients with mental illness improved subjective wellbeing, self-esteem, resilience, social cognition and social functioning and significantly diminished suspiciousness, perceived stress and depression.

BACKGROUND We previously reported the potential inhibitory activity of 3',4'-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) on nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages. PURPOSE We investigated the underlying molecular mechanisms of DHF in LPS-activated macrophages and evaluated its effect on LPS-induced septic shock in mice. METHODS To explore the anti-inflammatory effect of DHF, nitrite, PGE2, and cytokines were measured in vitro and in vivo experiments. In addition, to verify the molecular signaling pathway, quantitative real time-PCR, luciferase assay, nuclear extraction, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, immunocytochemistry, immunoprecipitation, molecular docking analysis, and myeloid differentiation 2 (MD2)-LPS binding assay were conducted. RESULTS DHF suppressed the LPS-induced expression of proinflammatory mediators through nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), activator protein-1 (AP-1), and interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) inactivation pathways in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Importantly, molecular docking analysis and in vitro binding assays showed that DHF interacts with the hydrophobic pocket of MD2 and then interferes with the interaction between LPS and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). DHF inhibited LPS-induced oxidative stress by upregulating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Treatment of LPS-induced endotoxemia mice with DHF reduced the expression levels of pro-inflammatory mediators via the inactivation of NF-κB, AP-1, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) in the lung tissue, thus increasing the survival rate. CONCLUSION Taken together, our data first time revealed the underlying mechanism of the DHF-dependent anti-inflammatory effect by preventing LPS from binding to the TLR4/MD2 complex. Therefore, DHF may be a possible anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of LPS-mediated inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Introduction This study investigated the effects of total cholesterol levels on prevalent, and incident suicidal behaviors according to age group (<60 vs. ≥60 years) in depressed patients. Methods Consecutive outpatients with depressive disorders who visited the Chonnam National University Hospital between March 2012 and April 2017 were recruited. Among 1,262 patients assessed at baseline, 1,094 agreed to blood sampling for measurement of serum total cholesterol levels. Among the patients, 884 completed the 12-week acute treatment phase and were followed up at least once during the 12-month continuation treatment phase. Suicidal behaviors assessed at baseline included baseline suicidal severity; behaviors assessed at the 1-year follow-up included increased suicidal severity and fatal/non-fatal suicide attempts. Associations of baseline total cholesterol levels with the above-mentioned suicidal behaviors were analyzed using logistic regression models after adjustment for relevant covariates. Results Of 1,094 depressed patients, 753 (68.8%) were women. The mean (SD) age of patients was 57.0 (14.9) years. Lower total cholesterol levels (87-161 mg/dl) were associated with increased suicidal severity (Linear Wald = 4.478, p < 0.05) and fatal/non-fatal suicide attempt (Linear Wald = 7.490, p < 0.01) in patients <60 years of age. U-shaped associations between total cholesterol levels and 1-year follow-up suicidal outcomes (increased suicidal severity, Quadratic Wald = 6.299, p < 0.05; fatal/non-fatal suicide attempt, Quadratic Wald = 5.697, p < 0.05) were observed in patients ≥60 years of age. Conclusions These findings suggest that differential consideration of serum total cholesterol levels according to age group may have clinical utility for predicting suicidality in patients with depressive disorders. However, because our research participants came from a single-hospital, the generalizability of our findings may be limited.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the differences in suicidality between young people and older adults with depression over the course of 12-week naturalistic treatment with antidepressants. METHODS A total of 565 patients who had moderate to severe depression (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HAM-D] score ≥14) and significant suicidal ideation (Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation [SSI-B] score ≥6) were recruited from 18 hospitals. Participants were classified into two groups: the younger group (13-24 years of age, n=82) and the older group (≥25 years of age, n=483). Total scores over time on the SSI-B, HAM-D, and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) were assessed and compared between the two groups. RESULTS At baseline, the younger group had lower HAM-D scores (21.0 vs. 22.2; p=0.028) but higher SSI-B scores (19.4 vs. 15.6; p<0.001) compared with the older group. The overall 12-week proportion of patients with resolved suicidality was 44.1% in the younger group and 69.2% in the older group. Although the improvement in the HAM-D and HAM-A scores did not differ between the groups, suicidal ideation in the younger group remained more severe than in the older group throughout the treatment. The ratio of the subjects who achieved HAM-D remission or response but did not achieve SSI-B remission was significantly higher in the younger group than in the older group. CONCLUSION These data suggest that in depressed youths, suicide risk is a serious concern throughout the course of depression even when favorable treatment outcomes are obtained.

Abstract
Repetitive exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) is one of the main causes of skin photoaging. We previously reported that dieckol isolated from Eisenia bicyclis extract has potential anti-photoaging effects in UVB-irradiated Hs68 cells. Here, we aimed to evaluate the anti-photoaging activity of dieckol in a UVB-irradiated hairless mouse model. In this study, hairless mice were exposed to UVB for eight weeks. At the same time, dieckol at two doses (5 or 10 mg/kg) was administered orally three times a week. We found that dieckol suppressed UVB-induced collagen degradation and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)-1, -3, and -9 expression by regulating transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β)/Smad2/3 and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs)/activator protein-1 (AP-1) signaling. In addition, dieckol rescued the production of hyaluronic acid (HA) and effectively restored the mRNA expression of hyaluronan synthase (HAS)-1/-2 and hyaluronidase (HYAL)-1/-2 in UVB-irradiated hairless mice. We observed a significant reduction in transepidermal water loss (TEWL), epidermal/dermal thickness, and wrinkle formation in hairless mice administered dieckol. Based on these results, we suggest that dieckol, due to its anti-photoaging role, may be used as a nutricosmetic ingredient for improving skin health.

Abstract
This study investigated the potential modifying effects of the level of the serum interleukin-18 (IL-18) on the association between BDNF methylation status and long-term cardiovascular outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Hospitalized ACS patients were recruited sequentially from 2006 to 2012. At baseline, the IL-18 level and BDNF methylation status were evaluated in 969 patients who were followed for major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) for 5-12 years, until 2017 or death. The time to first composite or individual MACE was compared between individuals with lower and higher average BDNF methylation levels (in the low- and high-IL-18 groups, respectively) using a Cox proportional hazards model. After adjusting for potential covariates, the modifying effects of IL-18 and average BDNF methylation levels on the initial composite and individual MACEs were examined. In the high-IL-18 group, but not in the low-IL-18 group, a higher average BDNF methylation level was associated with increases in composite MACEs (HR (95% CI) = 2.15 (1.42-3.26)), all-cause mortality (HR (95% CI) = 1.89 (1.11-3.22)), myocardial infarction (HR (95% CI) = 1.98 (1.07-3.67)), and percutaneous coronary intervention (HR (95% CI) = 1.81 (1.01-3.23)), independent of confounding variables. The interaction effect between the IL-18 and average BDNF methylation levels on composite MACEs (p = 0.019) and myocardial infarction (p = 0.027) was significant after adjusting for covariates. Analysis of BDNF methylation status and IL-18 levels may help identify ACS patients who are most likely to have adverse clinical outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The roles of childhood abuse and interleukin (IL)-1β levels, a representative pro-inflammatory cytokine, in suicidal behavior are unclear. This study investigated the main and interactive effects of childhood abuse and IL-1β levels on suicidal behavior in patients with a depressive disorder before and after pharmacological treatment. METHODS At baseline, exposure to self-reported childhood abuse, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, before the age of 16 years, and IL-1β levels, were measured in 1,094 outpatients with a depressive disorder, 884 of whom were followed for 1 year. Suicidal behavior was evaluated, including previous suicide attempts (at baseline), suicidal ideation (at baseline and follow-up), and fatal/non-fatal suicide attempts (at follow-up). The main and interaction effects of self-reported childhood abuse and IL-1β level on the four types of suicidal behavior were analyzed using logistic regression after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS Individual associations of self-reported childhood abuse were significant only with previous suicidal attempt but not with other suicidal behaviors. There was no significant association of plasma IL-1β level with any suicidal behavior. There were significant interactive associations of self-reported childhood abuse and a high IL-1β level on previous suicide attempts, baseline suicidal ideation, and fatal/non-fatal suicidal attempts during follow-up. CONCLUSION Suicidal behavior in patients with a depressive disorder could be influenced by considering the interactive effect of childhood abuse and IL-1β levels. Our study suggests that childhood trauma and biochemical factors play roles in the pathology of suicide in depressed patients.

Abstract
Increasing scientific evidence has demonstrated that the roots of Polygala tenuifolia Willd. have pharmacological effects related to anti-inflammation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the chemical constituents from P. tenuifolia roots as anti-inflammatory drug candidates. In the present work, twenty-three compounds were isolated from P. tenuifolia roots, including three saponins (1-3), ten phenylpropanoid sucrose esters (4-12), one benzoic acid sugar ester derivative (13), four xanthones (14-17), two hydroxy benzophenone derivatives (18 and 19), two phenolic derivatives (20 and 21), and two ionones (22 and 23). All isolates were tested for their inhibitory effects of LPS-stimulated NO and PGE2 production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Among these, 3-O-(3,4,5-trimethoxy-cinnamoyl),6'-O-(p-methoxybenzoyl) sucrose ester (TCMB; 11) together with compounds 3 and 21 exhibited significant inhibitory effects on NO production, while TCMB and compounds 17, 19, and 21 showed strong inhibitory effects on PGE2 production. Specifically, TCMB (11) downregulated the protein levels of iNOS and COX-2 in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages. In addition, TCMB (11) dose-dependently diminished the relative mRNA expression levels of iNOS, PGE2, and proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6). A molecular docking study showed that TCMB (11) has strong binding affinities with iNOS and COX-2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate individual and interactive associations of baseline serum leptin levels and physical comorbidity with short- and long-term treatment outcomes in outpatients with depressive disorders who received stepwise antidepressant treatment in a naturalistic prospective study design. METHODS Baseline serum leptin levels were measured, and the number of concurrent physical disorders ascertained from 1,094 patients. These patients received initial antidepressant monotherapy; then, for patients with an insufficient response or who experienced uncomfortable side effects, treatment was administered using alternative strategies every 3 weeks in the acute treatment phase (at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks) and every 3 months in the continuation treatment phase (at 6, 9, and 12 months). Then, 12-week and 12-month remission, defined as a Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score of ≤7, was estimated. RESULTS In multivariable logistic regression analyses, individual effects were found only between higher baseline serum leptin levels and 12-week non-remission. Significant interactive effects between higher leptin levels and fewer physical disorders (< 2 physical disorders) on 12-week non-remission were observed. However, neither individual nor interactive effects between leptin levels and physical comorbidity were associated with 12-month remission. CONCLUSION The combination of serum leptin level and number of physical disorders may be a useful predictor of short-term treatment responses in patients with depressive disorders receiving pharmacotherapy.

Abstract
Knowledge about the charge dynamics in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is a critical clue to optimize device architecture for enhancing the power efficiency and driving voltage characteristics in addition to the external quantum efficiency. In this work, we demonstrated that the charge behavior according to the operation voltage of OLEDs could be understood by introducing the convolutional neural network (CNN) of the machine learning framework without additional analysis of the unipolar charge devices. The CNN model trained using a two-dimensional (2D) modulus fingerprint simultaneously predicted the mobilities of the charge transport and emitting layers, realizing a deep understanding of the complicated data that humans cannot interpret. The machine learning model successfully describes the electrical properties of the organic layers in the actual devices configurated by different electron-transporting materials and the composition of cohosts in the emitting layer. For the first time, it was revealed that 2D fingerprints extracted using frequency- and voltage-dependent modulus spectra were effective data to represent comprehensive charge dynamics of OLEDs. The interpretation and perspective of the machine learning approach in this work were also discussed.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the predictors of remission by 4 treatment steps in depressive outpatients receiving 12-week psychopharmacotherapy. METHODS Patients were consecutively recruited at a university hospital in South Korea from March 2012 to April 2017. At baseline, 1,262 patients were evaluated for sociodemographic and clinical data including assessments scales, and were received antidepressant monotherapy. For patients with an insufficient response or uncomfortable side effects, next treatment steps (1, 2, 3, and 4) with alternative strategies (switching, augmentation, combination, and mixtures of these approaches) were administered considering measurements and patient preference at every 3 weeks in the acute treatment phase (3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks). Remission was defined as a Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score of ≤7. RESULTS In the multi-variate logistic regression analyses, remission was predicted by higher functional levels in patients received Step 1 and 2 treatment; by lower life stressors in Step 1; by higher social support in Step 3 and 4; and by lower suicidality in Step 1-3. CONCLUSION Differential associations were found between symptoms or functions and treatment steps, which suggested that multi-faceted evaluations at baseline could predict remission by treatment steps.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on suicide trends in Korea via a time-series analysis. We used Facebook Prophet to generate forecasting models based on the monthly numbers of suicide deaths in Korea between 1997 and 2018, validated the models by comparison with the 2019 numbers, and predicted the numbers of suicides in 2020. We compared the expected and observed numbers of suicides during the COVID-19 pandemic. The total numbers of suicides during the COVID-19 pandemic did not deviate from projections based on the pre-pandemic period. However, the number of suicides among women and those under the age of 34 years significantly exceeded the expected level. The COVID-19 pandemic did not increase the overall suicide rate significantly. However, suicides among women and young people increased, suggesting that the pandemic might drive more members of these groups to suicide. Further studies are needed to verify the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on suicide.

Abstract
Climate change has numerous effects on poultry that result in welfare concerns and economic losses in agricultural industries. However, the mechanisms underlying the acclimation to heat stress in poultry have not been comprehensively defined. Therefore, identifying associated patterns of gene regulation and understanding the molecular mechanisms of acclimation to a warmer environment will provide insights into the acclimation system of broiler chickens. We profiled differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with differences in growth performance under heat stress conditions in the liver tissues of broilers based on RNA sequencing data. The DEGs were identified by comparison to the gene expression levels of broilers exhibiting average growth at 28 d of age (D28A) and D36A relative to those at D21A. In D36A, 507 and 312 DEGs were up- and downregulated, respectively, whereas 400 and 156 DEGs were up- and downregulated in D28A, respectively. Pathway enrichment analysis further revealed that “fatty acid degradation” and “heat shock protein expression” were upregulated in broilers exhibiting a higher growth and weight, whereas “cell cycle arrest” and “amino acid metabolism” were downregulated. Transcriptome profiling revealed that the acclimatized group supplied fat and energy from the liver to tissues through the breakdown of fatty acids. Furthermore, homeostasis was maintained via heat shock proteins and antioxidant enzymes. The characterized candidate genes and mechanisms associated with the response to heat stress might serve as a foundation for improving the ability of broilers to acclimatize under heat stress conditions.
