Capillary RheoSANS: measuring the rheology and nanostructure of complex fluids at high shear rates

Complex fluids containing micelles, proteins, polymers and inorganic nanoparticles are often processed and used in high shear environments that can lead to structural changes at the nanoscale. Here, capillary rheometry is combined with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to simultaneously measure the viscosity and nanostructure of model complex fluids at industrially-relevant high shear rates. Capillary RheoSANS (CRSANS) uses pressure-driven flow through a long, flexible, silica capillary to generate wall shear rates up to 10⁶ s^-1 and measure pressure drops up to 500 bar. Sample volumes as small as 2 mL are required, which allow for measurement of supply-limited biological and deuterated materials. The device design, rheology and scattering methodologies, and broad sample capabilities are demonstrated by measuring a variety of model systems including silica nanoparticles, NIST monoclonal antibodies, and surfactant worm-like micelles. For a shear-thinning suspension of worm-like micelles, CRSANS measurements are in good agreement with traditional RheoSANS measurements. Collectively, these techniques provide insight into relationships between nanostructure and steady-shear viscosity over eight orders of magnitude in shear rate. Overall, CRSANS expands the capabilities of traditional RheoSANS instruments toward higher shear rates, enabling in situ structural measurements of soft materials at shear rates relevant to extrusion, coating, lubrication, and spraying applications.

Connecting particle interactions to agglomerate morphology and rheology of boehmite nanocrystal suspensions

HYPOTHESIS

The rheology of complex suspensions, such as nuclear waste slurries at the Hanford and Savannah River sites, imposes significant challenges on industrial-scale processing. Investigating the rheology and connecting it to the agglomerate morphology and underlying particle interactions in slurries will provide important fundamental knowledge, as well as prescriptive data for practical applications. Here, we use suspensions of nano-scale aluminum oxyhydroxide minerals in the form of boehmite as an analog of the radioactive waste slurry to investigate the correlation between particle interactions, agglomerate morphology, and slurry rheology.

EXPERIMENTS

A combination of Couette rheometry and small-angle scattering techniques (independently and simultaneously) were used to understand how agglomerate structure of slurry changes under flow and how these structural changes manifest themselves in the bulk rheology of the suspensions.

FINDINGS

Our experiments show that the boehmite slurries are thixotropic, with the rheology and structure of the suspensions changing with increasing exposure to flow. In the slurries, particle agglomerates begin as loose, system-spanning clusters, but exposure to moderate shear rates causes the agglomerates to irreversibly consolidate into denser clusters of finite size. The structural changes directly influence the rheological properties of the slurries such as viscosity and viscoelasticity. Our study shows that solution pH affects the amount of structural rearrangement and the kinetics of the rearrangement process, with an increase in pH leading to faster and more dramatic changes in bulk rheology, which can be understood via correlations between particle interactions and the strength of particle network. Nearly identical structural changes were also observed in Poiseuille flow geometries, implying that the observed changes are relevant in pipe flow as well.

Rheological characterization of yield stress gels formed via electrostatic heteroaggregation of metal oxide nanoparticles

Mixtures of fumed fractal metal oxide nanoparticles (np's) dispersed in water, at a solution pH where one species is positively charged and the other is negatively charged, form yield stress gels at volume fractions as low as 1.5%, due to electrostatic heteroaggregation into networks as confirmed by small-angle neutron scattering. These gels exhibit a measurable yield stress and an apparent viscosity that follows a power law relationship with shear rate. Rotational and oscillatory shear rheology is presented for binary mixtures of fumed silica, fumed alumina, and fumed titania in aqueous dispersions. Gels were characterized at various particle concentrations, solution pHs, mixture ratios, and salt concentrations. The strength of the gel network, as evaluated by the storage modulus and yield stress, is maximized when the mixture contains a mixture of particles with an approximately equal, but opposite, number of charged groups.

Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes at the Interface of Pickering Emulsions

Carbon nanotubes exhibit very unique properties in biphasic systems. Their interparticle attraction leads to reduced droplet coalescence rates and corresponding improvements in emulsion stability. Here we use covalent and noncovalent techniques to modify the hydrophilicity of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and study their resulting behavior at an oil-water interface. By using both paraffin wax/water and dodecane/water systems, the thickness of the layer of MWNTs at the interface and resulting emulsion stability are shown to vary significantly with the approach used to modify the MWNTs. Increased hydrophilicity of the MWNTs shifts the emulsions from water-in-oil to oil-in-water. The stability of the emulsion is found to correlate with the thickness of nanotubes populating the oil-water interface and relative strength of the carbon nanotube network. The addition of a surfactant decreases the thickness of nanotubes at the interface and enhances the overall interfacial area stabilized at the expense of increased droplet coalescence rates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the interfacial thickness of modified carbon nanotubes has been quantified and correlated to emulsion stability.

Pseudosolid, shear-thinning gel formation in binary dispersions of metal oxide nanoparticles at low volume fractions

Hydroxyl groups on the surface of metal oxide nanoparticles (nps) can be protonated or deprotonated depending on solution pH, changing both the magnitude and sign of the nps' surface charge. Binary mixtures of fumed metal oxide nps, dispersed in water at a solution pH where one species is positively charged and the other is negatively charged, form pseudosolid gels at volume fractions as low as 1.5 vol %. This work maps out regions of gel formation for binary mixtures of silica and alumina nps, silica and titania nps, and alumina and titania nps. The microscopic structure of these gels is investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), acoustic spectroscopy, and light microscopy.

Disrupting admicelle formation and preventing surfactant adsorption on metal oxide surfaces using sacrificial polyelectrolytes

The adsorption of anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants was measured on high-surface area silica and alumina nanoparticles when in the presence of the proposed polyelectrolyte sacrificial agents. Surfactant adsorption was characterized using two types of adsorption isotherms: one with constant polymer concentration and varying surfactant concentration, and another with a varying polymer concentration and constant surfactant concentration. Polystyrenesulfonate and Polydiallyl dimethylammonium chloride were tested as potential sacrificial agents on alumina and silica, respectively. Each surfactant/polymer system was allowed to reach equilibrium and supernatant surfactant concentrations were measured. This information was then plotted in order to determine what, if any, effect the proposed sacrificial agent had on the equilibrium adsorption. Results indicate that both of these polymers can have a large effect on total surfactant adsorption at a variety of surfactant concentrations.

Expanded PTFE membrane to prevent cardiac injury during resternotomy for congenital heart disease

BACKGROUND

Resternotomy for repair of congenital cardiac defects can result in cardiac injury. Closure of the pericardium during the initial operation may prevent this, and several pericardial substitutes have been tried, with variable results, in patients in whom primary pericardial closure is not possible. We conducted a multicenter observational study of the use of the expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (Preclude Pericardial Membrane, formerly called the Gore-Tex Surgical Membrane; W. L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ) in patients likely to undergo reoperation for treatment of congenital heart disease.

METHODS

Data were collected retrospectively on all patients in whom the expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane was inserted at the initial operation for congenital heart disease at 12 centers in 1984 to 1993.

RESULTS

A total of 1,085 patients (mean age, 55 +/- 2.5 months) received the membrane. During follow-up ranging from 1.3 to 10.5 years, 105 reoperations were performed. Injury during resternotomy occurred in only 1 patient (1% of reoperations). There were no membrane-related deaths or complications in the entire series of 1,085 patients.

CONCLUSIONS

The expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane was safe and effective in helping to prevent cardiac injury during resternotomy for treatment of congenital heart disease.

Intrathecal and intraventricular morphine for pain in cancer patients: initial study

Intractable pain in six cancer patients was treated with lumbar intrathecal morphine (two patients) and intraventricular morphine (four patients). Daily percutaneous injections of morphine through Ommaya reservoirs were made. Initially, 1 mg of lumbar intrathecal morphine resulted in pain relief for 10 to 14 hours, and 2.5 to 4.0 mg of intraventricular morphine gave relief for 12 to 24 hours. This treatment was continued for 3 to 7 months in three of the adults. Morphine requirements gradually increased. Side effects were minimal, and there were no complications.
