Crop grey water footprints in China: The impact of pesticides on water pollution. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2024; 935:173464. Abstract
Agricultural water pollution is a significant challenge in China, a rapidly growing economy with a large agricultural sector. The grey water footprint (WF) is a tool for evaluating freshwater pollution. It expresses pollution in volumetric units identifying the pollutant that theoretically needs most water to be diluted to accepted water quality standards. Previous agricultural grey WF studies focused on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), some studies included pesticides. This study assesses grey WFs based on N, P and 1513 pesticide combinations for twelve main crops and two crop categories in 31 Chinese provinces. Grey WFs, including the pesticide component, are far larger than estimated before, dominating total agricultural WFs (green, blue, and grey). The total grey WF of Chinese agriculture (4,900 109 m3 year-1) is determined by pesticides, while grey WFs related to N and P are 450 and 1,500 109 m3 year-1, differences of a factor of eleven and three respectively. The provinces Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Henan, and Shandong are hotspots contributing 37 % to the total grey WF. A limited number of pesticides used for maize, vegetables, fruits and potato (Mancozeb a fungicide, Acetochlor a herbicide and Cypermethrin an insecticide) dominate total grey WFs, contributing 80 % to the total grey WF. Eliminating the most polluting pesticides per category and redistributing the remaining ones with a similar function but lower grey WFs reduces national water pollution from agriculture by 64 %. Only five crops, i.e. maize, potato, soybean, rice and wheat, and the two crop categories, vegetables and fruits, contribute 94 % to this reduction. Probably grey WFs could reduce even further with a second elimination and redistribution effort. This study is the first national grey WF assessment related to pesticides in agriculture. It offers valuable insights to farmers and policymakers to enhance water quality in China and beyond.

Abstract
In this study, Micropterus salmoides were fed with dietary glutathione (GSH, 0, 100, 300, and 500 mg/kg) for 56 days to investigate its effects on growth performance, serum nonspecific immunity, liver antioxidant capacity, tissue morphology, and intestinal microbiota. The results showed that the survival rate, weight gain rate, and specific growth rate and condition factor increased, whereas the feed conversion ratio, hepato-somatic index, and viscerosomatic index decreased in the GSH groups. Compared with the control group, the serum total protein content significantly increased, whereas the triglyceride and total cholesterol significantly decreased in the 300-mg/kg dietary GSH group. The activities of lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase, and acid phosphatase were significantly higher in GSH-supplemented groups, peaking at 300-mg/kg GSH. GSH supplementation significantly increased total antioxidant capacity and decreased malondialdehyde content, with the most pronounced effects at 300-mg/kg GSH. Further antioxidant indicators showed that a dietary supplement of 300-mg/kg GSH significantly increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione transferase, endogenous glutathione, glutathione reductase, and catalase. At 300-mg/kg GSH, the liver exhibited improved characteristics with alleviated vacuolation and hepatocyte nuclear shift, and intestine showed enhanced structure with increased villus height and intestinal wall thickness. Additionally, a 300-mg/kg GSH supplementation improved the diversity of intestinal microbiota, increased the abundance of probiotics such as Bacillus, and inhibited the development of pathogenic bacteria such as Plesiomonas. Overall, the results suggest that the effect of GSH addition on improving growth performance, nonspecific immunity, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal microbiota of M. salmoides is best in the 300-mg/kg addition group. Based on second-degree polynomial regression analysis of weight gain, the optimum requirement of dietary GSH in M. salmoides is a 336.84-mg/kg diet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung (IMA) is a unique and rare subtype of lung adenocarcinoma with poorly defined prognostic factors and highly controversial studies. Hence, this study aimed to comprehensively identify and summarize the prognostic factors associated with IMA. METHODS A comprehensive search of relevant literature was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases from their inception until June 2023. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) of overall survival (OS) and/or disease-free survival (DFS) were obtained to evaluate potential prognostic factors. RESULTS A total of 1062 patients from 11 studies were included. In univariate analysis, we found that gender, age, TNM stage, smoking history, lymph node metastasis, pleural metastasis, spread through air spaces (STAS), tumor size, pathological grade, computed tomography (CT) findings of consolidative-type morphology, pneumonia type, and well-defined heterogeneous ground-glass opacity (GGO) were risk factors for IMA, and spiculated margin sign was a protective factor. In multivariate analysis, smoking history, lymph node metastasis, pathological grade, STAS, tumor size, and pneumonia type sign were found to be risk factors. There was not enough evidence that epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) mutations, CT signs of lobulated margin, and air bronchogram were related to the prognosis for IMA. CONCLUSION In this study, we comprehensively analyzed prognostic factors for invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung in univariate and multivariate analyses of OS and/or DFS. Finally, 12 risk factors and 1 protective factor were identified. These findings may help guide the clinical management of patients with invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) This study aims to analyze the nodal target volume in patients with node-negative SNSCC crossing the midline. MATERIALS/METHODS One hundred and four patients with node-negative advanced sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) crossing the midline were included. Survival rates were estimated and compared between treatment groups. RESULTS Sixty-four patients received contralateral ENI (contralateral ENI group), while forty patients did not (non-contralateral ENI group). The median follow-up time was 89.99 and 95.01 months in the contralateral and non-contralateral ENI groups, respectively. At 5 years, the regional relapse-free survival and contralateral regional relapse-free survival were 57.68% vs. 55.83% (p = 0.372), and 57.68% vs. 61.62% (p = 0.541), in contralateral ENI group vs. non-contralateral ENI group, respectively. Five-year overall survival, local relapse-free survival, and distant metastasis-free survival were similar in the two groups (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSION In patients with node-negative SNSCC crossing the midline, omission of contralateral ENI did not affect regional control and survival outcomes on the premise of receiving ipsilateral ENI covering at least levels Ib and II.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection can cause persistent inflammatory response in human gastric mucosal epithelial cells, which may result in the occurrence of cancer. However, the underlying mechanism of carcinogenesis has not been elucidated yet. Herein, we established the models of chronic H. pylori infection in GES-1 cells and C57BL/6J mice. Interleukin 8 (IL-8) level was detected by ELISA. The expression of NF-κB p65, IL-8, Wnt2 and β-catenin mRNA and proteins was evaluated by real-time PCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, and immunohistochemistry. The infection of H. pylori in mice was evaluated by rapid urease test, H&E staining and Warthin-Starry silver staining. The morphological changes of gastric mucosa were observed by electron microscopy. Our results showed that in H. pylori infected gastric mucosal cells along with activation of NF-κB signaling pathway and increase of IL-8 level, the expression of Wnt2 was also increased significantly, which preliminarily indicates that IL-8 can positively regulate the expression of Wnt2. Studies in chronic H. pylori infected C57BL/6J mice models showed that there was an increased incidence of premalignant lesions in the gastric mucosa tissue. Through comparing changes of gastric mucosal cell ultrastructure and analyzing the relationship between NF-κB signaling pathway and Wnt2 expression, we found that H. pylori infection activated NF-κB signal pathways, and the massive release of IL-8 was positively correlated with the high expression of Wnt2 protein. Subsequently, the activated Wnt/β-catenin signal pathways may be involved in the malignant transformation of gastric mucosal cells. Collectively, H. pylori chronic infection may continuously lead to persistent inflammatory response: activate NF-κB pathway, promote IL-8 release and thereby activate Wnt/β-catenin pathway. IL-8 probably plays an important role of a linker in coupling these two signal pathways.

Abstract
The active ingredients extracted from yeast are important for regulating animal health. The aim of the current research was to explore the impacts of dietary yeast glycoprotein (YG) on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, antioxidant capacity, immunity and disease resistance of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). A total of 375 juvenile fish (6.00 ± 0.03 g) were allocated into 15 fiberglass tanks. Triplicate tanks were assigned to each diet. The dietary YG inclusion was as follows: the first group was given a high fishmeal diet (40% fishmeal, 0% YG) (FM) and the second group was given a low fishmeal diet (30% fishmeal and 15% soybean meal, 0% YG) (LFM). The fish in the third, fourth and fifth groups were fed the LFM diet supplemented with 0.5% (LFM+YG0.5), 1.0% (LFM+YG1.0) and 2.0% (LFM+YG2.0) YG, respectively. After a 60- day feeding trial, a challenge test using A. hydrophila was carried out. The results showed that the final body weight (FBW) and weight gain rate (WGR) in the LFM+YG2.0 group were significantly higher than those in the LFM group and were no significantly different from those in the FM group. This may be partially related to the activation of the target of rapamycin (TOR) signaling pathway. Dietary YG supplementation enhanced intestinal physical barriers by upregulating the intestinal tight junction protein related genes (claudin1, occludin and zo2) and improving the structural integrity of the gut, which may be partially associated with AMPK signaling pathway. Moreover, dietary YG increased the antioxidant capacity in the gut, upregulated intestinal anti-inflammatory factors (il-10, il1-1β and tgf-β) and downregulated proinflammatory factors (il-1β and il-8), which may be partially related to the Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathways. The results of the challenge test indicated that dietary supplementation with 0.5 or 1.0% YG can increase the disease tolerance of largemouth bass against A. hydrophila. In conclusion, the present results indicated that dietary supplementation with YG promotes the growth performance, intestinal immunity, physical barriers and antioxidant capacity of largemouth bass. In addition, 1.0% of dietary YG is recommended for largemouth bass based on the present results.

Abstract
Background Combined injuries of ipsilateral wrist and elbow joints are rare in clinical practice, characterized by multiple joint dislocations or/and fractures and varying manifestations. As there are still no clinical guidelines and no consensus on the standard treatment, this study aimed to explore the surgical intervention and complications of this kind of combined injuries. Methods This retrospective study was conducted in a single center. A total of 13 patients with acute combined injuries of the ipsilateral wrist and elbow joints receiving surgical treatment from August 2013 to May 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. The fracture and joint instability and structural damages were repaired and reconstructed. Results All 13 patients were followed up for a mean duration of 17 months (range: 14 to 22 months). The X-ray films showed good fracture reduction and joint alignment, no fixation failure, re-displacement, bone nonunion, or ischemic necrosis in all cases. According to the Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS), the excellent and good rate of joint function was 84.6%. According to the Mayo Modified Wrist Score (MMWS), the excellent and good rate of joint function was 76.9%. There were no significant restrictions on elbow and wrist movements. The disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) score was excellent, with an average of 18.5 points. Conclusions The key to intervention of combined injuries of the wrist and elbow is to identify the types of injuries and conduct an overall assessment to determine the appropriate surgical methods. Early surgical intervention and rehabilitation exercise are the main principles for the treatment.

Abstract
On May 13, 2022, World Health Organization(WHO) Position Paper on Influenza Vaccine (2022 edition) was published. This position paper updates information on influenza epidemiology, high risk population, the impact of immunization on disease, influenza vaccines and effectiveness and safety, and propose WHO's position and recommendation that all countries should consider implementing seasonal influenza vaccine immunization programmes to prepare for an influenza pandemic. In addition, it proposes that the influenza surveillance platform can be integrated with the surveillance of other respiratory viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus. This position paper has some implications for the prevention and control of influenza and other respiratory infectious diseases in China: (1) Optimize influenza vaccine policies to facilitate the implementation of immunization services; (2) Influenza prevention and control should from the perspective of Population Medicine focus on the individual and community to integrate with "Promotion, Prevention, Diagnosis, Control, Treatment, Rehabilitation"; (3) Incorporate prevention and control of other respiratory infectious diseases such as influenza, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus and adenovirus, and intelligently monitor by integrating multi-channel data to achieve the goal of co-prevention and control of multiple diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Walnut oil, which is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), can be incorporated into food emulsions to increase their nutritional value. However, these emulsions are highly susceptible to deterioration during storage due to lipid oxidation. Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is a neutral plant polysaccharide used as a stabilizer, thickener or gelling agent in foods. The goal of this study was to incorporate KGM into oil-in-water emulsions containing walnut oil droplets coated by whey protein isolate (WPI) and then determine its effects on their physical and oxidative stability. RESULTS At pH 3, inclusion of KGM (0.1-1 g kg-1 ) reduced the positive surface potential on the droplets in the emulsions and modified the secondary structure of the adsorbed whey proteins, suggesting an interaction between KGM and WPI at the droplet surfaces. The physical stability of the emulsions was enhanced when 0.1-0.6 g kg-1 KGM was added but reduced at higher levels. Lipid oxidation was inhibited in the emulsions in a dose-dependent manner when 0.2-0.6 g kg-1 KGM was added but protein oxidation was promoted at higher KGM levels. The steric hindrance provided by the thick WPI-KGM interfaces, as well as the ability of the polysaccharides to modify the antioxidant properties of the adsorbed proteins, may account for these effects. CONCLUSION These results suggest that KGM can be used to inhibit lipid oxidation in emulsified foods containing protein-coated oil droplets. However, its level must be optimized because higher doses can result in droplet aggregation and protein oxidation. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The study of the combustion property of newly designed propellant by means of computational simulation is an efficient pathway for assessment and could avoid exposure to hazardous chemicals. An RDX-modified triple-base solid propellant formula was proposed in this study. Reactive molecular dynamics simulations employing ReaxFF-lg force field were performed to explore the thermal decomposition property of the propellant for a variety of temperatures. The reaction kinetics of the system and major ingredients were analyzed, and the apparent decomposition activation energies were calculated. The population of decomposition intermediates and products is thoroughly investigated. H2O is consumed at high temperatures indicating a water-gas reaction that could reduce carbon clusters during the combustion of solid propellant. The water-gas reaction, as well as the population of H2 at high temperature, points out the way of adjusting the formula of the propellant, which is adding fuel and oxidizer to improve combustion temperature and oxygen balance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS Sacrocolpopexy is the most durable surgical procedure for the treatment of symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (Maher et al. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2013;(4):CD004014). The single port robotic platform has recently been approved in the USA for use in urological surgery. Innovation in robotic surgery continues to evolve, minimizing abdominal wall trauma while improving instrumentation and technical feasibility. Identifying the appropriate procedures to utilize novel technology is important to understand the role of new surgical tools. Sacrocolpopexy procedure, when performed with supracervical hysterectomy, requires extension of an incision for specimen retrieval, making it ideal for single port surgery. The technique and adaptation to new instrumentation is demonstrated in this video. METHOD A surgical demonstration of single port robotic sacrocolpopexy is shown. RESULTS Sacrocolpopexy was successfully completed using the single port robotic platform. CONCLUSIONS Sacrocolpopexy is technically feasible with use of the single port robotic platform.

Abstract
As the largest salivary gland in oral cavity, the parotid gland plays an important role in initial digesting and lubricating food. The abnormal secretory function of the parotid gland can lead to dental caries and oral mucosal inflammation. In recent years, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has been used to explore the heterogeneity and diversity of cells in various organs and tissues. However, the transcription profile of the human parotid gland at single-cell resolution has not been reported yet. In this study, we constructed the cell atlas of human parotid gland using the 10× Genomics platform. Characteristic gene analysis identified the biological functions of serous acinar cell populations in secreting digestive enzymes and antibacterial proteins. We revealed the specificity and similarity of the parotid gland compared to other digestive glands through comparative analyses of other published scRNA-seq data sets. We also identified the cell-specific expression of hub genes for Sjögren syndrome in the human parotid gland by integrating the results of genome-wide association studies and bulk RNA-seq, which highlighted the importance of immune cell dysfunction in parotid Sjögren syndrome pathogenesis.

Abstract
The impact of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) on the physical and chemical stability of oil-in-water emulsions coated by a whey protein isolate (WPI) was investigated. At pH 3.0, the anionic LBP (0.2-0.6 wt %) molecules were electrostatically deposited onto the cationic surfaces of the WPI-coated oil droplets, leading to the formation of stable multilayered emulsions containing WPI-/LBP-coated oil droplets. However, increasing the LBP concentration to 0.8 wt % led to oil droplet aggregation, which was attributed to charge neutralization, bridging flocculation, and/or depletion flocculation. For subsequent experiments, a low (0.2%) and an intermediate (0.6%) LBP dose was used to prepare the secondary emulsions, and then their physical and oxidative stability was studied during 8 days of storage at 37 °C. The presence of the multilayer WPI/LBP coatings around the oil droplets inhibited lipid oxidation (reduced levels of lipid hydroperoxides and 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances), as well as protein oxidation (reduced levels of carbonyl formation, sulfhydryl consumption, molecular weight modifications, intrinsic fluorescence loss, and Schiff-base fluorescence gain). The antioxidant effects of the multilayer coatings were greater at the higher LBP concentration. These results suggest that LBP, a natural plant-based polysaccharide isolated from a traditional Chinese medicine, can be used to improve the quality of emulsion-based foods. However, the level used should be optimized to ensure good physical and oxidative stability of the emulsions.

Abstract
Endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFTR) allows completely resecting deep submucosal tumors (SMTs) in the gastrointestinal wall, which has a broad application prospect in clinic. However, its application and promotion are limited by complex surgical procedures and high surgical risk. Various auxiliary traction techniques are expected to reduce the operation difficulty and risk of EFTR and improve its operative success rate. To provide a reference for clinicians, we summarize various auxiliary traction techniques in EFTR in this article. The clip-with-line method is simple to operate and widely used, whereas its traction is limited and there is a risk of clip falling off. The snare traction method and the clip-snare traction method has advantage of large traction force, but its thrust is affected by the hardness of snare. The traction point of the grasping forceps traction method is flexible and easy to adjust. Nevertheless, it requires the use of a dual-channel upper endoscope, which is difficult to operate. The transparent cap traction method and the full-thickness resection device traction method takes a short time and is easy to promote, whereas the resectable lesion is limited, and the size of the lesion may affect the success rate. In contrast, the suture loop needle-T-tag tissue anchors assisted method has a large resection range, but the operation is complicated and the feasibility has not been verified. The robot-assisted method has flexible operation and excellent visualization, whereas it is expensive and difficult to operate. There is no report of the application of magnetic anchor technology in EFTR, but it may have good application prospects in the auxiliary traction of EFTR.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of dihydric alcohol chain length (1,2-ethanediol, 1,3-propanediol, and 1,4-butanediol) on the structure of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and the properties of the extracted oat proteins. Herein, five anhydrous and nine hydrated DESs were successfully prepared by mixing choline chloride, dihydric alcohol, and/or water in a heating method. The structures of DESs were confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR. Among them, only four anhydrous and six hydrated DESs were able to extract oat proteins from flours by one-step extraction. SDS-PAGE and FTIR analyses indicated that the structural properties of the oat proteins were highly reliant on the composition of the DESs; while physicochemical properties were primarily ruled by the environmental pH. Overall, the hydrated DES composing of all food-grade compounds, including choline chloride, 1,3-propanediol, and water at a molar ratio of 1:3:1, demonstrated its great potential for one-step biorefinery of oat proteins.

Abstract
We studied the impacts of protein location (interface or aqueous phase) on the antioxidant and prooxidant activities of tea polyphenols (TP) in model oil-in-water emulsions (pH 7) at a low (0.01% w/v) or high (0.04 % w/v) concentration. TP at 0.01% reduced the levels of both lipid and protein oxidation markers in emulsions, independent of the protein location. However, TP were more potent when proteins were located at the interface. At 0.04%, TP were only weakly antioxidant towards lipids but were prooxidant towards proteins in emulsions with proteins at the interface, whereas they were still somewhat antioxidant for aqueous phase proteins. These results indicate that TP may act as either antioxidants or prooxidants depending on their concentration and also on the location of the proteins in emulsions. The level of TP should be optimized for emulsion-based foods or beverages to achieve optimum antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Background
High volumes of standardized coronary artery calcium (CAC) scans are generated in screening that need to be scored accurately and efficiently to risk stratify individuals.
Purpose
To evaluate the performance of deep learning based software for automatic coronary calcium scoring in a screening setting.
Methods
Participants from the Robinsca trial that underwent low-dose ECG-triggered cardiac CT for calcium scoring were included. CAC was measured with fully automated deep learning prototype and compared to the original manual assessment of the Robinsca trial. Detection rate, positive Agatston score and risk categorization (0–99, 100–399, ≥400) were compared using McNemar test, ICC, and Cohen's kappa. False negative (FN), false positive (FP) rate and diagnostic accuracy were determined for preventive treatment initiation (cut-off ≥100 AU).
Results
In total, 997 participants were included between December 2015 and June 2016. Median age was 61.0 y (IQR: 11.0) and 54.4% was male. A high agreement for detection was found between deep learning based and manual scoring, κ=0.87 (95% CI 0.85–0.89). Median Agatston score was 58.4 (IQR: 12.3–200.2) and 61.2 (IQR: 13.9–212.9) for deep learning based and manual assessment respectively, ICC was 0.958 (95% CI 0.951–0.964). Reclassification rate was 2.0%, with a very high agreement with κ=0.960 (95% CI: 0.943–0.997), p<0.001. FN rate was 0.7% and FP rate was 0.1% and diagnostic accuracy was 99.2% for initiation of preventive treatment.
Conclusion
Deep learning based software for automatic CAC scoring can be used in a cardiovascular CT screening setting with high accuracy for risk categorization and initiation of preventive treatment.

Abstract
This article reviews deep learning applications in biomedical optics with a particular emphasis on image formation. The review is organized by imaging domains within biomedical optics and includes microscopy, fluorescence lifetime imaging, in vivo microscopy, widefield endoscopy, optical coherence tomography, photoacoustic imaging, diffuse tomography, and functional optical brain imaging. For each of these domains, we summarize how deep learning has been applied and highlight methods by which deep learning can enable new capabilities for optics in medicine. Abstract
The surface of glass is crucial for understanding many fundamental processes in glassy solids. A common notion is that a glass surface is a thin layer with liquid-like atomic dynamics and a thickness of a few tens of nanometers. Here, we measured the shear modulus at the surface of both millimeter-size and micrometer-size metallic glasses (MGs) through high-sensitivity torsion techniques. We found a pronounced shear-modulus softening at the surface of MGs. Compared with the bulk, the maximum decrease in the surface shear modulus (G) for the micro-scale MGs reaches ~27%, which is close to the decrease in the G upon glass transition, yet it still behaves solid-like. Strikingly, the surface thickness estimated from the shear-modulus softening is at least 400 nm, which is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that revealed from the glass dynamics. The unusually thick surface is also confirmed by measurements using X-ray nano-computed tomography, and this may account for the brittle-to-ductile transition of the MGs with size reductions. The unique and unusual properties at the surface of the micrometer-size MGs are physically related to the negative pressure effect during the thermoplastic formation process, which can dramatically reduce the density of the proximate surface region in the supercooled liquid state. The shear modulus and thickness of metallic glass (MG) surface is determined through torsion testing on micrometer-size wires The surface region of MG wires has a significant shear-modulus softening close to the supercooled liquid, yet still behaves solid-like The thickness of the soft surface of MG wires is at least 400 nm, which is about one order of magnitude larger than those revealed from surface dynamics The unusually thick surface accounts for the brittle-to-ductile transition of the MGs with size reduction

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS In December 2019, an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged in Wuhan, China. Although it has been reported that some patients with COVID-19 showed elevated liver biochemistries, there are few studies regarding the clinical features and prognosis of these patients. APPROACH AND RESULTS In this multicenter, retrospective study, we collected data on laboratory-confirmed patients with COVID-19 from three hospitals in Wuhan, China, who died or were discharged between February 1, 2020, and February 20, 2020. Data on demographics, comorbidities, clinical symptoms, laboratory examinations on admission, complications, treatment, and outcome were collected. A total of 482 patients were enrolled in this study. Of those, 142 (29.5%) patients showed abnormal liver biochemistries on admission, and patients with elevated alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and total bilirubin (TBIL) accounted for 67.6%, 69.0%, and 16.2%, respectively. Those with abnormal liver biochemistries showed higher percentages of severe cases and comorbidities and were more likely to have dyspnea, chest distress or pain, and increased hemoglobin (Hb) on admission. Higher rates of complications and mortality and worse recovery when discharged were observed in patients with abnormal AST or TBIL. Multivariable regression analysis showed that chest distress or pain (odds ratio [OR], 1.765; P = 0.018), dyspnea (OR, 2.495; P = 0.001), elevated C-reactive protein level (OR, 1.007; P = 0.008), elevated white blood count (OR, 1.139; P = 0.013), and elevated Hb concentration (OR, 1.024; P = 0.001) were independent factors associated with elevated liver biochemistries in patients with COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS Elevated liver biochemistries were common in patients with COVID-19. Patients with hypoxia or severe inflammation are more likely to experience increased liver biochemistries on admission. Those with abnormal AST or TBIL on admission are more likely to suffer from severe complications and death.
