Abstract
Hydrogen molecules dissociate on clean W(110) surfaces. This reaction is progressively inhibited as the tungsten surface is precovered with oxygen. We use density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics to rationalize, at the atomic scale, the influence of the adsorbed O atoms on the H2 dissociation process. The reaction probability is calculated for kinetic energies below 300 meV and different O nominal coverages. We show that the adsorbed O atoms act as repulsive centers that modulate the dynamics of the impinging H2 molecules by closing dissociation pathways. In agreement with existing experimental information, H2 dissociation is absent for an O coverage of half a monolayer. The results show that the influence of O adsorbates on the dissociation dynamics on W(110) goes much beyond the blocking of possible H adsorption sites. Adsorbed O atoms create a sort of chemical shield at the surface that prevents further approach and dissociation of the H2 molecules.

Abstract
Classical-limit quantum dynamics is used to explain the origin of the quantum thresholds of chemical reactions from their classical dynamics when these are vibrationally nonadiabatic across the interaction region. This study is performed within the framework of an elementary model of chemical reaction that mimics the passage from the free rotation of the reagents to the bending vibration at the transition state to the free rotation of the products.

Abstract
Introduction
Medications with Anticholinergic (AC) properties, are prescribed to treat a range of conditions. Older people are increasingly likely to be prescribed multiple AC medications, but are also more likely to experience unwanted adverse effects, such as falls and delirium. The risks of adverse outcomes increase with the number and potency of AC medications prescribed. The aim of this study was to use a prognostic modelling approach to develop an AC Medication Index (ACMI) that identifies patients at high risk of AC medication side effects.
Methods
The prognostic model was developed using data on patients aged 65–95 years, registered with a general practice contributing data to ‘Connected Bradford’ in 2019. A Time-dependent Cox model was fitted, with hospital admission for delirium or falls as the composite outcome and AC medications, age, sex and important clinical factors (e.g. dementia, arthritis, urinary incontinence) as predictors. Concordance and Negalkerke’s R2 derived from five-fold cross-validation were used to assess model performance.
Results
There were 151,604 patients included in the study, of whom 47,035 (31.0%) were prescribed ≥1 AC medication during 2019. Codeine, Prednisolone, Furosemide and Amitriptyline were most commonly prescribed with 7.4%, 4.0%, 3.8% and 3.1% of patients prescribed these medications at least once in 2019, respectively. During 2019, 6,078 (4.0%) patients experienced a hospital admission with delirium or a fall, with the rate being increased in those prescribed ≥1 AC medication during 2019 (4.8% vs 3.7%; p < 0.001). The prognostic model yielded a discrimination statistic of 0.86 with an R2 of 0.1.
Conclusion
The model used to develop the ACMI shows good discrimination. External validation will soon be performed using data from the SAIL databank and the ACMI will be further developed as a tool for use in primary care.

Abstract
Obesity is classically associated with low serum total and free 25(OH)D. Hypotheses have been advanced to explain this observation but mechanisms remain poorly understood, and notably priming events that could explain such association. We investigated the impact of short-term high fat (HF) diet to investigate early events occurring in vitamin D metabolism. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed with a control diet (control group) and HF diet for 4 days. HF fed mice displayed similar body weight to control mice but significantly increased adiposity, together with a decrease of free 25(OH)D concentrations, which could be explained at least in part by a decrease of Cyp2r1 and Cyp3a11 expression in the liver. An increase of 1,25(OH)2D concentration was also observed and could be explained by a decrease of Cyp24a1 expression observed in the kidney. In white adipose tissue (WAT), no modification of vitamin D metabolites quantity detected by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Nevertheless, an increase of Cyp2r1 and Cyp27a1 mRNA expression and a decrease of Cyp27b1 mRNA expression could suggest a possible storage of 25(OH)D in WAT at long-term. Our data are supportive of an active role of HF diet in mediating a priming effect leading the well-established perturbation of the vitamin D metabolism associated with obesity, including a decrease of free 25(OH)D and modulation of expression of genes involved in vitamin D metabolism.

Abstract
SCOPE Current evidence supports the beneficial effect of polyphenols on the management of obesity and associated comorbidities. This is the case for propolis, a polyphenol-rich substance produced by bees. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of a poplar propolis ethanolic extract (PPEE) on obesity and glucose homeostasis, and to unveil its putative molecular mechanisms of action. METHODS AND RESULTS Male high-fat (HF) diet-fed mice are administered PPEE for 12 weeks. PPEE supplementation reduces the HF-mediated adiposity index, adipocyte hypertrophy, and body weight gain. It also improves HOMA-IR and fasting glucose levels. Gene expression profiling of adipose tissue (AT) shows an induction of mRNA related to lipid catabolism and mitochondrial biogenesis and inhibition of mRNA coding for inflammatory markers. Interestingly, several Nrf2-target genes are induced in AT following administration of PPEE. The ability of PPEE to induce the expression of Nrf2-target genes is studied in adipocytes. PPEE is found to transactivate the Nrf2 response element and the Nrf2 DNA-binding, suggesting that part of the effect of PPEE can be mediated by Nrf2. CONCLUSION PPEE supplementation may represent an interesting preventive strategy to tackle the onset of obesity and associated metabolic disorders.

Abstract
When elementary reactive processes occur at such low energies that only a few states of reactants and/or products are available, quantum effects strongly manifest and the standard description of the dynamics within the classical framework fails. We show here, for H2 scattering on Pd(111), that by pseudoquantizing in the spirit of Bohr the relevant final actions of the system, along with adequately treating the diffraction-mediated trapping of the incoming wave, classical simulations achieve an unprecedented agreement with state-of-the-art quantum dynamics calculations.

Abstract
For some values of the total angular momentum consistent with reaction, the title processes involve nonreactive trajectories proceeding through a single rebound mechanism during which the internal motion of the reagent diatom is nearly unperturbed. When such paths are in a significant amount, the classical reaction probability is found to be markedly lower than the quantum mechanical one. This finding was recently attributed to an unusual quantum effect called diffraction-mediated trapping, and a semiclassical correction was proposed in order to take into account this effect in the classical trajectory method. In the present work, we apply the resulting approach to the calculation of opacity functions as well as total and state-resolved integral cross sections (ICSs) and compare the values obtained with exact quantum ones, most of which are new. As the title reactions proceed through a deep insertion well, mean potential statistical calculations are also presented. Seven values of the collision energy, ranging from 30 to 1127 K, are considered. Two remarkable facts stand out: (i) The corrected classical treatment strongly improves the accuracy of the opacity function as compared to the usual classical treatment. When the entrance transition state is tight, however, those trajectories crossing it with a bending vibrational energy below the zero point energy must be discarded. (ii) The quantum opacity function, particularly its cutoff, is finely reproduced by the statistical approach. Consequently, the total ICS is also very well described by the two previous approximate methods. These, however, do not predict state-resolved ICSs with the same accuracy, proving thereby that (i) one or several genuine quantum effects involved in the dynamics are missed by the corrected classical treatment and (ii) the dynamics are not fully statistical.

Abstract
Low circulating levels of total and free 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) indicative of vitamin D status have been associated with obesity in humans. Moreover, obesity is thought to play a causal role in the reduction of 25(OH)D levels, and several theories have been put forward to explain this relationship. Here we tested the hypothesis that obesity disrupts vitamin D homeostasis in key organs of vitamin D metabolism. Male C57BL6 mice were fed for 7 or 11 weeks on either a control diet (control, 10% energy from fat) or a high-fat diet (HF, 60% energy from fat) formulated to provide equivalent vitamin D3 intake in both groups. After 7 weeks, there was a transient increase of total 25(OH)D together with a significant decrease of plasma vitamin D3 that could be related to the induction of hepatic genes involved in 25-hydroxylation. After 11 weeks, there was no change in total 25(OH)D but a significant decrease of free 25(OH)D and plasma vitamin D3 levels. We also quantified an increase of 25(OH)D in adipose tissue that was inversely correlated to the free 25(OH)D. Interestingly, this accumulation of 25(OH)D in adipose tissue was highly correlated to the induction of Cyp2r1, which could actively participate in vitamin D3 trapping and subsequent conversion to 25(OH)D in adipose tissue. Taken together, our data strongly suggest that the enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism, notably in adipose tissue, are transcriptionally modified under high-fat diet, thus contributing to the obesity-related reduction of free 25(OH)D.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Moyamoya angiopathy (MMA) is a progressive steno-occlusive disease of the distal internal carotid arteries mainly described in Asia. It induces the development of collateral vascular networks to reduce chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. Symptoms depend on the patient's age in Asia: children are at greater risk of transient or constituted ischemic events, whereas adults are more exposed to hemorrhagic stroke. Data from the literature seem to show that the pattern of MMA in western countries differs from that in Asia. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective study of patients with MMA was conducted in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (mid-eastern France). Clinical data (symptoms, risk factors, age at diagnosis, number and timing of recurrences, type of treatment) as well as radiological data (angiographic findings, Suzuki's grade) were analyzed. RESULTS Seventeen adult patients (9 men, 53%) were followed at the university hospitals of Besançon and Dijon from 2009 to 2016. Fourteen patients (83%) had bilateral disease. The mean age at diagnosis was 49 years (±16), 83% of the patients were Caucasian and 17% originated from Maghreb. Only 17% of the hemispheres had a hemorrhagic form. Ischemic form was more frequent before diagnosis with transient ischemic attack (24% of patients) and stroke (83% of patients). With medical treatment, 9 patients suffered from stroke recurrence (53% of patients) with an average delay of 22.7±34 months. Three patients (18%) had combined surgical management by encephelo-synangiosis and superficial temporal artery-to-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) anastomosis, without symptom recurrence after treatment with an average follow up of 14 months. CONCLUSION MMA remains a rare cerebrovascular disease in Europe and requires multidisciplinary care. Epidemiological analysis showed differences with the Asian population, especially the predominance of ischemic forms in adults.

Abstract
This paper deals with the treatment of quantum interferences in the semiclassical initial value theory of rotationally inelastic scattering in the interaction picture. Like many semiclassical methods, the previous approach involves a phase index related to sign changes of a Jacobian whose square root is involved in the calculations. It is shown that replacing the original phase index by a new one extends the range of applicability of the theory. The resulting predictions are in close agreement with exact quantum scattering results for a model of atom-rigid diatom collision involving strong interferences. The developments are performed within the framework of the planar rotor model, but are readily applicable to three-dimensional collisions.

Abstract
Inflammation of adipose tissue is believed to be a contributing factor to many chronic diseases associated with obesity. Vitamin D (VD) is now known to limit this metabolic inflammation by decreasing inflammatory marker expression and leukocyte infiltration in adipose tissue. In this study, we investigated the impact of VD on microRNA (miR) expression in inflammatory conditions in human and mouse adipocytes, using high-throughput methodology (miRNA PCR arrays). Firstly, we identified three miRs (miR-146a, miR-150, and miR-155) positively regulated by TNFα in human adipocytes. Interestingly, the expression of these miRs was strongly prevented by 1,25(OH)2D preincubation. These results were partly confirmed in 3T3-L1 adipocytes (for miR-146a and miR-150). The ability of VD to control the expression of these miRs was confirmed in diet-induced obese mice: the levels of the three miRs were increased following high fat (HF) diet in epididymal white adipose tissue and reduced in HF diet fed mice supplemented with VD. The involvement of NF-κB signaling in the induction of these miRs was confirmed in vitro and in vivo using aP2-p65 transgenic mice. Finally, the ability of VD to deactivate NF-κB signaling, via p65 and IκB phosphorylation inhibition in murine adipocyte, was observed and could constitute a driving molecular mechanism. This study demonstrated for the first time that VD modulates the expression of miRs in adipocytes in vitro and in adipose tissue in vivo through its impact on NF-κB signaling pathway, which could represent a new mechanism of regulation of inflammation by VD.

Abstract
White lesions represent an early phase of caries formation. 20 human sound premolars were subjected to pH cycling procedure to induce subsurface lesions (SLs) in vitro. In addition, 2 teeth with naturally developed white spot lesions (WSLs) were used as references. All specimens characterized by confocal Raman microscopy being used for the first time in examining white & subsurface lesions and providing a high resolution chemical and morphological map based on phosphate peak intensity alterations at 960 cm-1. Nanoindentation technique was used to measure Hardness (H) and Young's modulus (E) of enamel. Phosphate map of examined samples exhibited presence of intact surface layer (ISL) followed by severe depletion in (PO43-) peak in the area corresponding to the body of the lesion. In all examined groups, the mechanical properties of enamel were decreased in lesion area and found to be inversely related to penetration depth of indenter owing to enamel hierarchical structure. By combining the above two techniques, we linked mechanical properties of enamel to its chemical composition and ensured that the two methods are highly sensitive to detect small changes in enamel composition. Further work is required to bring these two excellent tools to clinical application to perceive carious lesions at an early stage of development.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Moya-Moya angiopathy is a neurovascular disease that predisposes to ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes. It is generated by a steno-occlusion of the terminal portion of the internal carotid arteries, which induces the development of abnormal neovessels in the deep regions of the brain. Some pathologies such as sickle cell disease, Down syndrome or Graves' disease may be associated with Moya-Moya angiopathy. These syndromic forms harbor several differences compared with idiopathic Moya-Moya disease. CASE REPORT We report the case of a young patient who presented with a syndromic form of Moya-Moya angiopathy after cranial radiation therapy for an optic glioma associated with type 1 neurofibromatosis treated by combined revascularization. We discuss the particularities of syndromic forms, in their presentation and management based on a review of the literature. CONCLUSION Many diseases can be associated with Moya-Moya syndrome. Symptomatic patients should undergo surgery, but the risk of postoperative complications appears to be greater than that encountered in patients with non-syndromic Moya-Moya angiopathy.

Abstract
It is well established that the active form of vitamin D (i.e., 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D]) regulates the expression of genes involved in its own metabolism and transport in the kidney and possibly in the liver. However, little is known about the transcriptional impact of cholecalciferol supplementation on white adipose tissue (WAT) and adipocytes, which are a major site of vitamin D and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] storage in the organism. To fill this gap, we investigated the impact of cholecalciferol supplementation in WAT via a panel of genes coding for enzymes and proteins involved in vitamin D metabolism and uptake. Mice supplemented with cholecalciferol (15,000 IU/kg of body weight per day) for 4 days showed decreased messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of proteins involved in cholecalciferol metabolism (Cyp24a1, Cyp27a1) and decreased cubilin mRNA levels in WAT. These data were partly confirmed in 3T3-L1 adipocytes incubated with 1,25(OH)2D. The downregulation of cubilin mRNA observed in WAT and in 3T3-L1 was confirmed at the protein level in WAT and at the mRNA level in human primary adipocytes. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) agonist (EB1089) and RNA interference approaches demonstrated that VDR was involved in this regulation. Furthermore, chemical inhibitor and RNA inference analysis demonstrated that cubilin was involved in 25(OH)D uptake by adipocytes. This study established an overall snapshot of the genes regulated by cholecalciferol in mouse WAT and cell-autonomously in adipocytes. We highlighted that the regulation of cubilin expression was mediated by a VDR-dependent mechanism, and we demonstrated that cubilin was involved in 25(OH)D uptake by adipocytes.

Full-dimensional semiclassical dynamical calculations combining classical paths and Bohr quantization of product internal motions are reported for the prototype photofragmentation of isocyanic acid in the S1 state. These calculations allow one to closely reproduce for the first time key features of state-of-the-art imaging measurements at photolysis wavelengths of 201 and 210 nm while providing insight into the underlying dissociation mechanism. Quantum scattering calculations being beyond reach for most polyatomic fissions, pair-correlated data on these processes are much more often measured than predicted. Our theoretical approach can be used to fill this gap.

Abstract
SCOPE Several studies have linked the high intake of lycopene or tomatoes products with lower risk for metabolic diseases. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and to compare the effect of lycopene and tomato powder on obesity-associated disorders. METHODS AND RESULTS Male C57BL/J6 mice were assigned into four groups to receive: control diet (CD), high fat diet (HFD), high fat diet supplemented with lycopene or with tomato powder (TP) for 12 weeks. In HFD condition, lycopene and TP supplementation significantly reduced adiposity index, organ, and relative organ weights, serum triglycerides, free fatty acids, 8-iso-prostaglandin GF2α and improved glucose homeostasis, but did not affect total body weight. Lycopene and TP supplementation prevented HFD-induced hepatosteatosis and hypertrophy of adipocytes. Lycopene and TP decreased HFD-induced proinflammatory cytokine mRNA expression in the liver and in the epididymal adipose tissue. The anti-inflammatory effect of lycopene and TP was related to a reduction in the phosphorylation levels of IκB, and p65, and resulted in a decrease of inflammatory proteins in adipose tissue. CONCLUSION These results suggest that lycopene or TP supplementation display similar beneficial health effects that could be particularly relevant in the context of nutritional approaches to fight obesity-associated pathologies.

Abstract
SCOPE The stimulation of the free fatty acid receptor G-protein coupled receptor (GPR) 40 by GW9508 prevents bone loss by inhibiting osteoclast activity, both in vitro and in vivo. Here, we questioned whether the stimulation of the GPR40 receptor by dietary fatty acids may lead to the same beneficial effect on bone. METHODS AND RESULTS We investigated (i) the impact of a fatty acid enriched diet (high-fat diet [HFD]) on bone health in C57/BL6 female mice depending on (ii) the estrogen status (ovariectomy) and (iii) the genotype (GPR40+/+ or GPR40-/- ). Bone mineral density (BMD), body composition, weight, inflammation and bone remodeling parameters were monitored. HFD decreased BMD in HFD-SH-GPR40+/+ mice but OVX failed to further impact BMD in HFD-OVX-GPR40+/+ mice, while additional bone loss was observed in HFD-OVX-GPR40-/- animals. These data suggest that when stimulated by fatty acid enriched diets GPR40 contributes to counteract ovariectomy-induced bone alteration. The sparing effect is supported by the modulation of both the osteoprotegerin/receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (OPG/RANKL) ratio in blood stream and the expression level of inflammatory markers in adipose tissues. Bone preservation by GPR40 stimulation is dependent on the presence of long-chain saturated fatty acids. CONCLUSION GPR40 contributes to counter ovariectomy-induced bone loss in a context of saturated fatty acid enrichment.

Abstract
The semiclassical Wigner theory (SCWT) of photodissociation dynamics, initially proposed by Brown and Heller [J. Chem. Phys. 75, 186 (1981)] in order to describe state distributions in the products of direct collinear photodissociations, was recently extended to realistic three-dimensional triatomic processes of the same type [Arbelo-González et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 15, 9994 (2013)]. The resulting approach, which takes into account rotational motions in addition to vibrational and translational ones, was applied to a triatomic-like model of methyl iodide photodissociation and its predictions were found to be in nearly quantitative agreement with rigorous quantum results, but at a much lower computational cost, making thereby SCWT a potential tool for the study of polyatomic reaction dynamics. Here, we analyse the main reasons for this agreement by means of an elementary model of fragmentation explicitly dealing with the rotational motion only. We show that our formulation of SCWT makes it a semiclassical approximation to an approximate planar quantum treatment of the dynamics, both of sufficient quality for the whole treatment to be satisfying.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the medicolegal claims related to obstetrics in French hospitals. MATERIAL AND METHODS We did retrospective study on insurance claims provided by Sham insurances and which has been settled by a court over a 3-year period (2004-2006). RESULTS We analyzed 66 closed claims that occurred between 1983 and 2005 in French hospitals (54 general hospitals and 12 academic). The average time between the declaration of the claim and the court conviction was 6 years. The average amount of compensation per claim was 500,000 €. The damage occurred during vaginal delivery (n=44), planned (n=5) or unplanned (n=4) cesarean. The more often claims are fetal asphyxia (n=24) or shoulder dystocia (n=8). The consequences are very important: cerebral palsy (16), death of the newborn (12), death of the mother (2) or brachial plexus injuries (6). CONCLUSION The causes identified by the expert are always multifactorial with generally a misdiagnosis (n=27), a decision making error (n=36), a care error by the midwife (n=21) and/or a delay in medical care (n=13). These data should help strengthen the quality approach in obstetrics.

Abstract
The semiclassical Wigner treatment of Brown and Heller [J. Chem. Phys. 1981, 75, 186] is applied to direct triatomic (or triatomic-like polyatomic) photodissociations with the aim of accurately predicting final state distributions at relatively low computational cost, and having available a powerful interpretative tool. For the first time, the treatment takes rotational motions into account. The proposed formulation closely parallels the quantum description as far as possible. An approximate version is proposed, which is still accurate while numerically much more efficient. In addition to being weighted by usual vibrational Wigner distributions, final phase space states appear to be weighted by new rotational Wigner distributions. These densities have remarkable structures clearly showing that classical trajectories most contributing to rotational state j are those reaching the products with a rotational angular momentum close to [j(j + 1)](1/2) (in ℏ units). The previous methods involve running trajectories from the reagent molecule onto the products. The alternative backward approach [L. Bonnet, J. Chem. Phys., 2010, 133, 174108], in which trajectories are run in the reverse direction, is shown to strongly improve the numerical efficiency of the most rigorous method in addition to being state-selective, and thus, ideally suited to the description of state-correlated distributions measured in velocity imaging experiments. The results obtained by means of the previous methods are compared with rigorous quantum results in the case of Guo's triatomic-like model of methyl iodide photodissociation [J. Chem. Phys., 1992, 96, 6629] and close agreement is found. In comparison, the standard method of Goursaud et al. [J. Chem. Phys., 1976, 65, 5453] is only semi-quantitative.

Abstract
In recent years, many chemical reactions have been studied by means of the quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) method within the Gaussian binning (GB) procedure. The latter consists of "quantizing" the final vibrational actions in Bohr spirit by putting strong emphasis on the trajectories reaching the products with vibrational actions close to integer values. A major drawback of this procedure is that if N is the number of product vibrational modes, the amount of trajectories necessary to converge the calculations is ∼10(N)×larger than with the standard QCT method. Applying it to polyatomic processes is thus problematic. In a recent paper, however, Czakó and Bowman propose to quantize the total vibrational energy instead of the vibrational actions [G. Czakó and J. M. Bowman, J. Chem. Phys. 131, 244302 (2009)], a procedure called 1GB here. The calculations are then only ∼10 times more time consuming than with the standard QCT method, allowing thereby for considerable numerical saving. In this paper, we propose some theoretical arguments supporting the 1GB procedure and check its validity on model test cases as well as the prototype four-atom reaction OH+D(2)→HOD+D.

Abstract
A nonconventional application of phase space theory to the insertion reactions A+H(2), with A=C((1)D) and S((1)D), is presented. Instead of approximating the potential energies of interaction between separated fragments by their isotropic long-range contributions, as in the original theory, the latter are replaced by the accurate potential energies averaged with respect to Jacobi angles. The integral and differential cross sections obtained from this mean potential phase space theory (MPPST) turn out to be in very satisfying agreement with the benchmark predictions of the time-independent and time-dependent statistical quantum methods. The formal and numerical simplicity of MPPST with respect to any approach combining statistical assumptions and dynamical calculations makes it a promising tool for studying indirect polyatomic reactions.

Abstract
For complex-forming triatomic reactions such as the prototypical insertion reactions intensively studied in the last few years, quantum mechanical differential cross sections (DCS) present sharp forward/backward polarization peaks when the reagent rotational angular momentum quantum number j is zero. Moreover, the size of the peaks decreases rapidly with increasing j values so that for j = 3, they are no longer visible. In contrast, the polarization peaks are always missing in the classical mechanical DCSs. Apart from the peaks, however, the quantum and classical DCSs are usually in good agreement. In a recent rapid communication, we showed that the fundamental reason for the previous differences in the quantum and classical scenarios is that parity conservation leads in quantum mechanics to an angular momentum constraint without equivalent in classical mechanics. We also proposed a parity-restoring approximation leading to an accurate semi-classical description of the peaks. While only the main lines of the demonstration were given in the communication, we report here the whole developments. We also analyse why the peaks disappear when the reagent diatom is rotationally excited. As a by-product of the previous developments, we finally discuss the possibility of a general statistico-dynamical semiclassical approach.

Abstract
In associative desorptions governed by short-range forces, strong energy transfers between rotational, translational, and vibrational degrees of freedom of the nascent molecule take place beyond the transition state (TS). State or energy distributions are thus different at the TS and in the vacuum. Inspired by previous studies on unimolecular reactions, a statisticodynamical approach (SDA) is proposed which combines the transition state theory for the description of state distributions at the TS and a simple dynamical model to account for the effect of the post-TS dynamics on these distributions. The agreement found between the predictions of SDA, the much more demanding classical trajectory calculations, and experimental results in the case of H(2) and D(2) desorbing from Cu(111) is very satisfying. In addition to that, the formulation highlights some key factors of state distributions which would have been difficult to directly extract from a dynamical study. The notions of vibrational heating and rotational cooling are discussed within this context.

Abstract
For complex-forming chemical reactions, such as atom-diatom insertion reactions, quantum scattering and quantum statistical calculations usually predict sharp forward/backward peaks in the Differential Cross Sections (DCS). Conversely, the corresponding classical calculations are unable to reproduce these peaks. We show here that the basic reason for such an intriguing failure is that parity conservation is ignored in classical mechanics. A by-product of the analysis is a simple parity-restoring approximation that might significantly increase the ability of classical mechanics to describe DCSs over the whole angular range for the title processes.

Abstract
Phase space theory (PST) is applied to the calculation of state-resolved integral and differential cross sections for the complex-forming atom-diatom insertion reactions A + H(2) --> AH(2) --> AH + H with A = C((1)D), S((1)D), O((1)D), and N((2)D). In the asymptotic channels, vibration motion is quantized while rotation and translation motions are treated classically. The approach is compared to exact quantum scattering calculations and quantum statistical models. Given the simplicity of PST, the agreement with the previous much more refined treatments is very satisfying. Although PST is a well-established theory, this work is, to our knowledge, the first such systematic comparison of its predictions with accurate quantum scattering and quantum statistical calculations.
