Effect of magnetic field coupled magnetic biochar on membrane bioreactor efficiency, membrane fouling mitigation and microbial communities

The excitation by magnetic field was established to mitigate the membrane fouling of magnetic biochar (MB)-supplemented membrane bioreactor (MBR) in this study. The results showed that the transmembrane pressure (TMP) increase rates decreased by about 8 % after introducing the magnetic field compared with the magnetic biochar-MBR (MB-MBR). Membrane characterization suggested that the flocs in the magnetic field-magnetic biochar-MBR (MF-MB-MBR) formed a highly permeable developed cake layer, and a fluffier and more porous deposited layer on membrane surface, which minimized fouling clogging of the membrane pores. Further mechanistic investigation revealed that the decrease in contact angle of fouled membrane surface in MF-MB-MBR, i.e. an enhanced membrane hydrophilicity, is considered important for forming highly permeable layers. Additionally, the magnetic field was demonstrated to have a positive effect on the improvement of the magneto-biological effect, the enhancement of charge neutralization and adsorption bridging between sludge and magnetic biochar, and the reduction of formation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs), which all yielded sludge flocs with a large pore structure conducive to form a fluffy and porous deposited layer in the membrane surface. Furthermore, high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the magnetic field also led to a reduction in microbial diversity, and that it promoted the enrichment of specific functional microbial communities (e.g. Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes) playing an important role in mitigating membrane fouling. Taken together, this study of magnetic field-enhanced magnetic biochar for MBR membrane fouling mitigation provides insights important new ideas for more effective and sustainable operation strategies.

A new strategy for accelerating recovery of anaerobic granular sludge after low-temperature shock: In situ regulation of quorum sensing microorganisms embedded in polyvinyl alcohol sodium alginate

Low-temperature could inhibit the performance of anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). Quorum sensing (QS), as a communication mode between microorganisms, can effectively regulate AnGS. In this study, a kind of embedded particles (PVA/SA@Serratia) based on signal molecule secreting bacteria was prepared by microbial immobilization technology based on polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate to accelerate the recovery of AnGS system after low temperature. Low-temperature shock experiment verified the positive effect of PVA/SA@Serratia on restoring the COD removal rate and methanogenesis capacity of AnGS. Further analysis by metagenomics analysis showed that PVA/SA@Serratia stimulated higher QS activity and promoted the secretion of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) in AnGS. The rapid construction of EPS protective layer effectively accelerated the establishment of a robust microbial community structure. PVA/SA@Serratia also enhanced multiple methanogenic pathways, including direct interspecies electron transfer. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that PVA/SA@Serratia could effectively strengthen AnGS after low-temperature shock.

Evaluation of various carbon sources on ammonium assimilation and denitrifying phosphorus removal in a modified anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process from low-strength wastewater

A pilot-scale continuous-flow modified anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (MAAO) process examined the impact of external carbon sources (acetate, glucose, acetate/propionate) on ammonium assimilation, denitrifying phosphorus removal (DPR), and microbial community. Acetate exhibited superior efficacy in promoting the combined process of ammonia assimilation and DPR, enhancing both to 50.0 % and 60.0 %, respectively. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota facilitated ammonium assimilation, while denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (DPAOs) played a key role in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal. Denitrifying glycogen-accumulating organisms (DGAOs) aided N removal in the anoxic zone, ensuring stable N and P removal and recovery. Acetate/propionate significantly enhanced DPR (77.7 %) and endogenous denitrification (37.9 %). Glucose favored heterotrophic denitrification (29.6 %) but had minimal impact on ammonium assimilation. These findings provide valuable insights for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) seeking efficient N and P removal and recovery from low-strength wastewater.

Comprehensive carbon footprint analysis of wastewater treatment: A case study of modified cyclic activated sludge technology for low carbon source urban wastewater treatment

To reduce pollution and carbon emissions, a quantitative evaluation of the carbon footprint of the wastewater treatment processes is crucial. However, micro carbon element flow analysis is rarely focused considering treatment efficiency of different technology. In this research, a comprehensive carbon footprint analysis is established under the micro carbon element flow analysis and macro carbon footprint analysis based on life cycle assessment (LCA). Three wastewater treatment processes (i.e., anaerobic anoxic oxic, A2O; cyclic activated sludge technology, CAST; modified cyclic activated sludge technology, M-CAST) for low carbon source urban wastewater are selected. The micro key element flow analysis illustrated that carbon source mainly flows to the assimilation function to promote microorganism growth. The carbon footprint analysis illustrated that M-CAST as the optimal wastewater treatment process had the lowest global warming potential (GWP). The key to reduce carbon emissions is to limit electricity consumption in wastewater treatment processes. Under the comprehensive carbon footprint analysis, M-CAST has the lowest environmental impact with low carbon emissions. The sensitivity analysis results revealed that biotreatment section variables considerably reduced the environmental impact on the LCA and the GWP, followed by the sludge disposal section. With this research, the optimization scheme can guide wastewater treatment plants to optimize relevant treatment sections and reduce pollution and carbon emissions.

Integration of ammonium assimilation with denitrifying phosphorus removal for efficient nutrient management in wastewater treatment

Nutrient removal from sewage is transitioning to nutrient recovery. However, biological treatment technologies to remove and recover nutrients from domestic sewage are still under investigation. This study delved into the integration of ammonium assimilation with denitrifying phosphorus removal (DPR) as a method for efficient nutrient management in sewage treatment. Results indicated this approach eliminated over 80 % of the nitrogen in the influent, simultaneously recovering over 60 % of the nitrogen as the activated sludge through ammonia assimilation, and glycerol facilitated this process. The nitrification/denitrifying phosphorus removal ensured the stability of both nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The phosphorus removal rate exceeded 96 %, and the DPR rate reached over 90 %. Network analysis highlighted a stable community structure with Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota driving ammonium assimilation. The synergistic effect of fermentation bacteria, denitrifying glycogen-accumulating organisms, and denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms contributed to the stability of nitrogen and phosphorus removal. This approach offers a promising method for sustainable nutrient management in sewage treatment.

Combined applications of UV and chlorine on antibiotic resistance control: A critical review

Environmental health problems caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) have become a global concern. ARB and ARGs have been continuously detected in various water environments, which pose a new challenge for water quality safety assurance. Disinfection is a key water treatment process to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms in water, and combined chlorine and UV processes (the UV/Cl2 process, the UV-Cl2 process, and the Cl2-UV process) are considered potential disinfection methods to control antibiotic resistance. This review documented the efficacy and mechanism of combined UV and chlorine processes for the control of antibiotic resistance, as well as the effects of chlorine dose, solution pH, UV wavelength, and water matrix on the effectiveness of the processes. There are knowledge gaps in research on the combined chlorine and UV processes for antibiotic resistance control, in particular the UV-Cl2 process and the Cl2-UV process. In addition, changes in the structure of microbial communities and the distribution of ARGs, which are closely related to the spread of antibiotic resistance in the water, induced by combined processes were also addressed. Whether these changes could lead to the re-transmission of antibiotic resistance and harm human health may need to be further evaluated.

Regulation of extracellular polymers based on quorum sensing in wastewater biological treatment from mechanisms to applications: A critical review

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) regulated by quorum sensing (QS) could directly mediate adhesion between microorganisms and form tight microbial aggregates. Besides, EPS have redox properties, which can facilitate electron transfer for promoting electroactive bacteria. Currently, the applications research on improving wastewater biological treatment performance based on QS regulated EPS have been widely reported, but reviews on the level of QS regulated EPS to enhance EPS function in microbial systems are still lacking. This work proposes the potential mechanisms of EPS synthesis by QS regulation from the viewpoint of material metabolism and energy metabolism, and summarizes the effects of QS on EPS synthesis. By synthesizing the role of QS in EPS regulation, we further point out the applications of QS-regulated EPS in wastewater biological treatment, which involve a series of aspects such as strengthening microbial colonization, mitigating membrane biofouling, improving the shock resistance of microbial metabolic systems, and strengthening the electron transfer capacity of microbial metabolic systems. According to this comprehensive review, future research on QS-regulated EPS should focus on the exploration of the micro-mechanisms, and economic regulation strategies for QS-regulated EPS should be developed, while the stability of QS-regulated EPS in long-term production experimental research should be further demonstrated.

Effects of different dietary vitamin D combinations during the grower phase and the feed restriction phase on growth performance and sternal morphology, mineralization, and related genes expression of bone metabolism in Pekin ducks

Our study aimed to investigate the effects of different dietary vitamin D (VD) combinations during the grower (1-32 d of age) and feed restriction (33-52 d of age) phases on growth performance. We also evaluated sternal morphology, mineralization, and related genes expression of bone metabolism as well as absorption of calcium and phosphorous in duodenal mucosa and kidney in Pekin ducks. During the grower phase, we used 2 VD regimes (Group A: 3,160 IU/kg VD3; Group B: 400 IU/kg VD3 + 69 μg/kg 25-OH-D3). Each dietary treatment had 50 replicate pens of 10 ducks per pen. During the feed restriction phase, 30 replicate pens selected from Group A and Group B, repetitively, were redivided into 5 different dietary VD regimes to form a 2 × 5 experimental design. Each group consisted of 6 replicates, each with 10 ducks. During the feed restriction phase, we evaluated 5 different dietary VD combinations were as follows: T1: 2,000 IU/kg VD3 ; T2: 5,000 IU/kg VD3; T3: 3,620 IU/kg VD3 + 34.5 μg/kg 25-OH-D3; T4: 2,240 IU/kg VD3 + 69 μg/kg 25-OH-D3; T5: 1,800 IU/kg VD3 + 80 μg/kg 25-OH-D3). Results showed that Group B combinations with T5 had a better growth performance and breast meat deposition (P < 0.1). Regardless of 5 dietary VD regimes during the feed restriction phase, Group B significantly increased (P < 0.05) 52 d sternal depth and tended to increase (P < 0.1) 52 d sternal defatted weight, ash content, and phosphate (P) content of ducks. A significant interactive effect (P < 0.05) was observed on the mRNA abundance of DMP1 and Sost1 as well as RANKL/OPG in sternum and of VDR in duodenal mucosa of ducks at 52 d of age between dietary VD combinations during 2 phases. These results indicated that dietary VD regimes during the grower phase could affect the effectiveness of dietary VD regimes during the feed restriction phases; Dietary VD combinations of both phases could affect the genes expression of bone formation and the absorption as well as reabsorption of calcium and phosphorus in duodenum and kidney.

Effects of lysed sludge reflux point on ultrasound lysis-cryptic growth in anaerobic/aerobic (A/O) wastewater treatment: Sludge reduction, microbial community, and metabolism

Ultrasonication allows sludge reduction to be performed in situ during wastewater treatment, and the reflux point of the lysed sludge affects this performance. This study investigated the effects of reflux point (anaerobic stage, carbon/nitrogen (C/N) lowest stage, and aerobic stage) on sludge lysis-cryptic growth in an anaerobic/aerobic reactor and variations in the sludge and microbial community. The best reflux point occurred at the lowest C/N ratio stage, and a 50.96% reduction in excess sludge was achieved. The reflux of the lysed sludge to the aerobic stage reduced nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The reflux of the lysed sludge decreased the average sludge size, reaching 29.2 μm when reflux to the aerobic stage. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the sludge surface was unaffected by the reflux point. The Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the most prominent variation in the intensity of the sludge functional groups occurred when the reflux was at the lowest C/N stage. The amount of extracellular polymeric substances decreased the most during reflux to the anaerobic stage. The sludge microbial communities varied with the reflux point, and the dominant phyla during reflux to the anaerobic, lowest C/N, and aerobic stages were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes, respectively. Furthermore, the reflux point did not alter the metabolic pathway of sludge microorganisms but increased the number of enzymes in metabolic pathways.

Micro-aeration and leachate recirculation for the acceleration of landfill stabilization: Enhanced hydrolytic acidification by facultative bacteria

The long duration of landfill stabilization is one of the challenges faced by municipalities. In this paper, a combination of micro-aeration and leachate recirculation is used to achieve rapid degradation of organic matter in landfill waste. The results showed that the content of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in the hydrolysis phase increased significantly and could enter the methanogenic phase quickly. Until the end of the landfill, the removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) by micro-aeration and leachate recirculation reached 80.17 %, 48.30 % and 48.56 %, respectively, and the organic matter degradation rate reached 50 %. Micro-aeration and leachate recirculation enhanced the abundance of facultative hydrolytic bacteria such as Rummeliibacillus and Bacillus and the oxygen tolerance of Methanobrevibacter and Methanoculleus. Micro-aeration and leachate recirculation improved the organic matter degradation efficiency of landfill waste by promoting the growth of functional microorganisms.

Roles and regulation of quorum sensing in anaerobic granular sludge: Research status, challenges, and perspectives

Anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) has a complex and important internal microbial communication system due to its unique microbial layered structure. As a concentration-dependent communication system between bacterial cells through signal molecules, QS (quorum sensing) is widespread in AnGS and exhibits great potential to regulate microbial behaviors. Therefore, the universal functions of QS in AnGS have been systematically summarized in this paper, including the influence on the metabolic activity, physicochemical properties, and microbial community of AnGS. Subsequently, the common QS-based AnGS regulation approaches are reviewed and analyzed comprehensively. The regulation mechanism of QS in AnGS is analyzed from two systems of single bacterium and mixed bacteria. This review can provide a comprehensive understanding of QS functions in AnGS systems, and promote the practical application of QS-based strategies in optimization of AnGS treatment process.

A comprehensive review on food waste anaerobic co-digestion: Research progress and tendencies

Food waste (FW) anaerobic digestion systems are prone to imbalance during long-term operation, and the imbalance mechanism is complex. Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of FW and other substrates can overcome the performance limitations of single digestion, allowing for the mutual use of multiple wastes and resource recovery. Research on the AcoD of FW has been widely conducted and successfully applied to a practical engineering scale. Therefore, this review describes the research progress of AcoD of FW with other substrates. By analyzing the problems and challenges faced by AcoD of FW, the synergistic effects and influencing factors of different biomass wastes are discussed, and improvement strategies to improve the performance of AcoD of FW are summarized from different reaction stages of anaerobic digestion. By combing the research progress of AcoD of FW, it provides a reference for the optimization and improvement of the performance of the co-digestion system.

Magnetic-field-induced simultaneous charge separation and oxygen transfer in photocatalytic oxygen activation for algae inactivation

Photocatalytic oxygen activation is an excellent strategy for algae control in water. However, the fast recombination of photogenerated charge and slow rate of oxygen transfer limit the reactive oxygen species generation efficiency for algae inactivation. Herein, to solve above issues, magnetic field was introduced to the BiO_2-x/Bi₃NbO₇ system to effectively covert oxygen into reactive radicals. The electrochemical experiment and DFT calculation results indicated the charge separation could be accelerated by the Lorentz force generated by the magnetic field, resulting in increase of electron concentration. Meanwhile, the value of volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient was increased by 59.79 % with magnetic field, thus more oxygen could be reduced to superoxide radical. Photocatalytic algae inactivation rate by BiO_2-x/Bi₃NbO₇ with magnetic field could be increased by 2.07 times than that without magnet filed. This work further extends the strategy of using magnetic field to simultaneously facilitate the charge separation and oxygen transfer rate.

Enhanced antibiotic wastewater degradation by intimately coupled B-Bi3O4Cl photocatalysis and biodegradation reactor: Elucidating degradation principle systematically

Intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) is an emerging technology that has potential applications in the degradation of bio-recalcitrant pollutants. However, the interaction principles between photocatalysts and biofilms in ICPB have not been well developed. This article covers a cooperative degradation scheme coupling photocatalysis and biodegradation for efficient degradation and mineralization of ciprofloxacin (CIP) using ICPB with B-doped Bi₃O₄Cl as the photocatalyst. In consequence, a removal rate of ∼95 % is reached after 40 d. The biofilms inside the ICPB carriers can mineralize the photocatalytic products, thus improving the removal rate of total organic carbon (TOC) by more than 20 %. Interior biofilms are not destroyed by CIP or photocatalysis, and they adapt to ICPB of CIP by enriching in Pseudoxanthomonas, Ferruginibacter, Clostridium, Stenotrophomonas and Comamonas and reconstructing their microbial communities using energy produced by the light-excited photoelectrons. Furthermore, this research gives new opinion into the degradation principles of the ICPB system.

Association between nutritional indices and mortality after hip fracture: a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

This study analyzed evidence on the association between prognostic nutritional index (PNI), controlling nutritional status (CONUT), geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI), and mini-nutritional assessment-short form (MNA-SF) and mortality after hip fracture.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The online databases of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar were accessed for literature reporting the association between PNI/CONUT/GNRI/MNA-SF and mortality after hip fracture. Data were pooled in a random-effects model.

RESULTS

13 studies were eligible. Meta-analysis of six studies showed that individuals with low GNRI had a significantly higher risk of mortality as compared to those with high GNRI (OR: 3.12 95% CI: 1.47, 6.61 I2=87% p=0.003). Meta-analysis of three studies found that low PNI was not a significant predictor of mortality amongst hip fracture patients (OR: 1.42 95% CI: 0.86, 2.32 I2=71% p=0.17). On pooling data from five studies, it was noted that patients with low MNA-SF scores had a significantly higher risk of mortality in comparison to those with higher scores (OR: 3.61 95% CI: 1.70, 7.70 I2=85% p=0.0009). Only one study was available on CONUT. Heterogeneity of cut-offs and variable follow-up were important limitations.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results indicate that MNA-SF and GNRI can predict mortality in elderly patients undergoing surgery for hip fractures. Data is scarce on PNI and CONUT to draw strong conclusions. Variation in cut-offs and follow-up period are important limitations which need to be addressed by future studies.

Current management of subarachnoid hemorrhage in a northern urban Chinese population: a multi-center surveillance study

OBJECTIVE

The current management of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the urban Chinese population remains unclear and the relevant literature is still lacking. Therefore, this work aimed to investigate the recent clinical practice in the management of spontaneous SAH in an urban population-based setting.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

From 2009 to 2011, the China Epidemiology Research In Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (CHERISH) project, which was a two-year prospective, multi-center, population-based, case-control study, was performed in the northern urban Chinese population. SAH cases were described in terms of their features, clinical management, and in-hospital outcomes.

RESULTS

Totally of 226 cases were enrolled with a final diagnosis of primary spontaneous SAH (65% of females; mean age, 58.5±13.2 years; range, 20-87 years). Among them, 92% of these patients received nimodipine, while 93% took mannitol. Meanwhile, 40% of them received traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), while 43% took neuroprotective agents. Endovascular coiling was applied in 26% of 98 angiography-confirmed intracranial aneurysms (IA) cases, while neurosurgical clipping was in 5% of them.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings on the management of SAH in the northern metropolitan Chinese population reveal that nimodipine is an effective medical therapy with a high rate of use. There is also a high utilization rate of alternative medical interventions. Endovascular coiling occlusion is more common than neurosurgical clipping. Therefore, regionally traditional therapy may be a key factor for the difference in the treatment of SAH between northern and southern China.

Effects of supplemented mode of emulsifier on growth performance, serum biochemical index, quality of meat and skin fat, and nutrient utilization in Pekin ducks

In our previous experiment, we found that fats with pre-emulsification (PreE), a new supplemented mode of emulsifier, had an improved bioavailability for Pekin ducks than fats without PreE based on dietary EE utilization. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of the supplemented mode of emulsifier (PreE vs. emulsifier direct supplementation) on the growth performance, serum biochemical index, quality of meat and skin fat, and nutrient utilization in Pekin ducks. A total of 640 healthy 10-day-old Pekin male ducks (408.65 ± 12.00 g) were randomly allocated into 4 treatments with 16 replicates of 10 birds each. The 4 dietary treatments were as follows: the positive control group (PC; the oil supplemented amount of 6%), the negative control group (NC; the oil supplemented amount of 5.4%), the emulsifier group (E; NC diet with an emulsifier added directly), and the oil pre-emulsification group (PreE; NC diet with oil PreE). The results showed reducing the amount of fat in the diet (NC vs. PC) significantly decreased growth performance and quality of skin fat, and affected serum lipid metabolism (P < 0.05). Interestingly, the body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), and the shear force of skin fat were increased, but the feed to gain ratio (F/G) was markedly decreased in the PreE group (P < 0.05) compared to those in the NC group, and these levels were similar to those in the PC group (P > 0.05). Additionally, the utilization of dietary dry matter (DM), ether extract (EE), and total phosphorous (TP) were increased, but the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in serum was decreased in the PreE group compared to those in the NC group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, compared to the E group, the F/G was decreased (P < 0.05), and the utilization of dietary EE, the shear force of skin fat and content of collagen in skin fat were markedly increased (P < 0.05) in the PreE group. However, no differences were observed (P > 0.05) in growth performance between the group administered a direct supplementation of emulsifier and the control groups (PC and NC). These results indicate that the negative effect of reducing the oil supplementation amount (-0.6%) in the diet can be restored by supplementation with emulsifier, especially by oil with PreE.

Enhanced landfill process based on leachate recirculation and micro-aeration: A comprehensive technical, environmental, and economic assessment

The landfill is still the primary waste treatment method in developing countries. Due to the long stability time and long-term occupation of a large amount of land, the landfill poses a significant threat to the ecological environment and affects the process of urbanization. This study conducted a landfill simulation reactor (LSR) experiment to achieve rapid landfill stabilization through micro-aeration and leachate recirculation. More than 60 % of the degradable organic carbon in the enhanced process (LSR-IV contains 24 % of the retained carbon) can be relatively quickly converted to a gaseous state, which is nearly half higher than the degradation efficiency of the traditional process (LSR-I contains 59.3 % of the retained carbon). A comprehensive environmental assessment is developed for the enhanced process, and better environmental benefits are obtained from the whole landfill process. Compared with conventional treatment process, the enhanced process is applied to the actual landfill to analyze the economic cost. In terms of the total cost, the enhanced process cost (60.1 CNY) is about 44 % lower than the conventional landfill process cost (107.6 CNY). The enhanced process saves nearly half of the time cost and reduces the cost of land acquisition. This study can provide a reference for governmental and municipal administrations to carry out the technological transformation of traditional landfills from the aspects of technology, economy and environment.

Nonfood Probiotic, Prebiotic, and Synbiotic Use Reduces All-Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality Risk in Older Adults: A Population-Based Cohort Study

OBJECTIVES

Pro-, pre-, and synbiotic supplements improve cardiovascular risk factors. However, the association between nonfood pro-, pre-, and synbiotics (NPPS) and long-term all-cause and cardiovascular mortality has not been studied. Thus, our objective was to determine the impact of nonfood pro-, pre-, and synbiotics on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

This was a retrospective, cohort study of 4837 nationally representative American participants aged 65 years or older with a median follow-up duration of 77 months.

MEASUREMENTS

All-cause and cardiovascular mortality were measured.

RESULTS

A total of 1556 participants died during the median 77-month follow-up, and 517 died from cardiovascular disease. Compared with participants without NPPS use, participants who used NPPS experienced a reduced risk of all-cause mortality by nearly 41% (hazard ratio 0.59, 95% CI 0.43 to 0.79) and cardiovascular mortality by 52% (HR 0.48, 95% CI 0.30 to 0.76). Such an effect persisted in most subgroup analyses and complete-case analyses.

CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE

In this study, we found a protective effect of NPPS against all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in Americans aged 65 years or older. Nonfood pro-, pre-, and synbiotics can be a novel, inexpensive, low-risk treatment addition for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality for older individuals.

Performance and mechanism of modified biological nutrient removal process in treating low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio wastewater

For solving the challenge of difficult nutrient removal, high running cost and CO₂ emission at low carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio, Bi-Bio-Selector for nitrogen and phosphorus removal (BBSNP) process was developed. Under parallel operation conditions, full-scale BBSNP was less influence by low C:N ratio (3.5-2) than Anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (AAO) and achieved better nitrogen removal performance. The mechanism of performance advantage in BBSNP was analyzed by mass balance and high throughout sequencing. It demonstrated BBSNP developed unique microbial community at C:N ratio of 2. Higher abundance of Saccharibacteria, Ferruginibacter, Ottowia, Dokdonella, Candidatus_Nitrotoga and Nitrospira in BBSNP was responsible for better chemical oxygen demand (COD) utilization efficiency, denitrification, denitrifying phosphorus removal and nitrification. Meanwhile, under low C:N ratio, BBSNP could save 10% organic carbon and 15% oxygen requirement, reduce 53% running cost and 21% CO₂ emission, which had practical value in relieving energy crisis and carbon emission of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Effects of a high-fat diet on the growth performance, lipid metabolism, and the fatty acids composition of liver and skin fat in Pekin ducks aged from 10 to 40 days

This study aimed to investigate the effect of a high-fat diet on the growth performance, serum, liver, and skin lipid metabolism as well as the fatty acids composition of liver and skin fat in Pekin ducks from 10 to 40 d of age based on a pair-fed group. Two hundred forty healthy male ducks (10 d old, 470.53 ± 0.57 g) were randomly divided into 3 groups (8 replicates per cage of 10 ducks): a normal diet (ND, 3% fat), a high-fat diet (HFD, 9% fat), and a pair-fed diet (PFD, given the ND in an amount equal to that consumed of the HFD to eliminate the effects of feed intake). The results were as follows: compared to ND feeding, HFD feeding significantly decreased (P < 0.05) the feed intake and feed:gain ratio (F:G), along with serum triglyceride and nonesterified fatty acid contents. When compared with the ND and PFD, the HFD significantly decreased (P < 0.05) the liver weight and inhibited hepatic de novo lipogenesis (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase activities), β-oxidation (carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 content), and decreased saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids deposition. Moreover, the HFD significantly increased (P < 0.05) the total fat content, lipid droplet area, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) content in the liver, as well as the abdominal fat weight, subcutaneous fat weight, the total fat and PUFAs content in skin fat. These results suggested that the HFD improved feed efficiency, which was related to HFD feeding inhibiting hepatic de novo lipogenesis and β-oxidation and promoting the deposition of fat in skin as well as altering the fatty acids composition of the liver and skin fat in Pekin ducks.

Fe-N complex biochar as a superior partner of sodium sulfide for methyl orange decolorization by combination of adsorption and reduction

To enhance the decolorization of methyl orange (MO), Fe-N complex biochar (Fe-N-BC) was developed as an accelerator in the sodium sulfide (Na₂S) reduction system. The decolorization effect and mechanism of MO in the Fe-N-BC/Na₂S composite system were studied. Surface pore analysis, Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR, XPS, and electrochemical analysis were used to characterize Fe-N-BC and unmodified biochar (BC). These results demonstrated that Fe-N-BC had better adsorption performance (specific surface area 463.46 m² g^-1) and electron transfer capacity than BC. By adding Fe-N-BC to the Na₂S reduction system for MO, it was found that the decolorization of MO was greatly improved (increased by 93%). Besides, the effects of critical factors such as the initial concentration of Na₂S, the dosage of Fe-N-BC, pH value, and temperature on the decolorization rate of MO were evaluated. Through the analysis of the action mechanism, the cooperation mode of Fe-N-BC and Na₂S was to form an infinite cycle of adsorption-reduction-regeneration, so as to realize the rapid decolorization of MO. On the one hand, Fe-N-BC could adsorb MO and Na₂S on its surface to increase the contact opportunity; on the other hand, it could act as a redox mediator to accelerate the electron transfer of the reduction reaction. In addition, the degradation of MO by Na₂S was also an in-situ regeneration of Fe-N-BC. These findings may provide a feasible method to decolorize azo dyes quickly by cooperating with chemical reducing agents from a new perspective.

Corn distiller's dried grains with solubles as an alternative ingredient to corn and soybean meal in Pekin duck diets based on its predicted AME and the evaluated standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids

The study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) levels on growth performance, carcass characteristic, serum biochemical indexes, meat physical and chemical quality, nutrient utilization, and standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids (SIDAA) in Pekin ducks aged 11 to 42 d based on the evaluation of its SIDAA. A total of 560 eleven-day-old Cherry Valley ducks were randomly allotted to 5 treatments with 7 replicate pens per treatment and 16 ducks per pen based on the average body weight. Six isonitrogenous and isocaloric experimental diets were formulated on a digestible amino acid basis to produce diets containing 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20% DDGS, respectively. With increasing of dietary DDGS levels, a linear and quadratic reduction (P < 0.05) was observed in the body weight (BW) at d 42, average day gain (ADG) and average day feed intake (ADFI) from d 11 to 42, breast meat yield, the moisture and protein content in the breast meat, and dietary DM and EE utilization. Moreover, a linear and quadratic increase (P < 0.05) was observed in the b* value of the breast meat and serum total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations. Compared with the control group, the group with 10% inclusion of DDGS exhibited no adverse effect on growth performance, carcass characteristics, serum biochemical indexes, meat physical and chemical quality, nutrient utilization, and the SIDAA of the diets (P > 0.05). These results suggested that 10% of corn DDGS can function as an alternative ingredient to corn and soybean meal, and the optimal levels of DDGS in the diets of ducks aged from 11 to 42 d depends more on its quality.

Study on performance and mechanism of enhanced low-concentration ammonia nitrogen removal from low-temperature wastewater by iron-loaded biological activated carbon filter

In order to strengthen the treatment of low-concentration ammonia nitrogen wastewater at low temperature, iron-loaded activated carbon (Fe-AC) with ultrasonic impregnation method was used as the filter material of biofilter process. The performance and mechanism of ammonia nitrogen removal from simulated secondary wastewater by iron-loaded biological activated carbon filter (Fe-BACF) were studied at 10 °C. The characterization results showed that iron was loaded on the surface of AC in the form of Fe₂O₃, and the specific surface area, total pore volume, pore size and alkaline functional group content of Fe-AC were obviously increased. After the formation of biofilm on the surface of filter media, the average removal rate of ammonia nitrogen by Fe-BACF (97.9%) was significantly higher than that of conventional BACF (87.8%). The improved surface properties increased the number and metabolic activity of microorganisms, and promoted the secretion of EPS on the surface of Fe-BAC. The results of high-throughput sequencing showed that the existence of Fe optimized the bacterial community structure on the surface of Fe-BAC, with the increase of the abundances of psychrophilic bacteria and ammonia nitrogen removal bacteria. The mechanism of enhanced ammonia nitrogen removal by Fe-BACF was the joint action of many factors, among which the main causal relationship was that modification of iron could optimize the number and category of microorganisms on Fe-BAC surface by improving the surface properties, thus improving the biological nitrogen removal ability. Results of this study provided a practical way for the treatment of low ammonia nitrogen wastewater in cold regions.

Production and purification of 2-phenylethanol by Saccharomyces cerevisiae using tobacco waste extract as a substrate

2-phenylethanol (2-PE), which is extracted naturally from plant or biotechnology processing, is widely used in the food and cosmetics industries. Due to the high cost of 2-PE production, the valorization of waste carbon to produce 2-PE has gained increasing attention. Here, 2-PE was produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae using tobacco waste extract (TWE) as the substrate. Considering the toxicity of nicotine and its inhibition of 2-PE, the tolerance of S. cerevisiae was first evaluated. The results suggested that the production of 2-PE by S. cerevisiae in TWEs could be carried out at 2·0 mg ml-1 nicotine concentrations and may be inhibited by 1·0 mg ml-1 2-PE. Thus, the compounds in the TWEs prepared at different temperatures were detected, and the results revealed that the TWEs prepared at 140°C contained 2·18 mg ml-1 of nicotine, had total sugar concentrations of 26·8 mg ml-1 and were suitable for 2-PE production. Due to feedback regulation, the 2-PE production was only 1·11 mg ml-1 , and the remaining glucose concentration remained at 13·78 mg ml-1 , which indicated insufficient glucose utilization. Then, in situ product recovery was further implemented to remove this inhibition; the glucose utilization (the remaining concentration decreased to 3·64 mg ml-1 ) increased, and the 2-PE production increased to 1·65 mg ml-1 . The 2-PE produced in the fermentation broth was first isolated by elution from the resin with 75% ethanol and then by removing the impurities with 2·5% activated charcoal, and pure 2-PE was identified by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The results of this study suggest that TWE could be an alternative carbon source for 2-PE production. This could provide an outlet tobacco waste as well as reducing the price of natural 2-PE, although more strategies need to be explored to improve the production yield of 2-PE by using TWE.

Cell-free DNA from bile outperformed plasma as a potential alternative to tissue biopsy in biliary tract cancer

BACKGROUND

Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are rare and highly heterogenous malignant neoplasms. Because obtaining BTC tissues is challenging, the purpose of this study was to explore the potential roles of bile as a liquid biopsy medium in patients with BTC.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Sixty-nine consecutive patients with suspected BTC were prospectively enrolled in this study. Capture-based targeted sequencing was performed on tumor tissues, whole blood cells, plasma, and bile samples using a large panel consisting of 520 cancer-related genes.

RESULTS

Of the 28 patients enrolled in this cohort, tumor tissues were available in eight patients, and plasma and bile were available in 28 patients. Somatic mutations were detected in 100% (8/8), 71.4% (20/28), and 53.6% (15/28) of samples comprising tumor tissue DNA, bile cell-free DNA (cfDNA), and plasma cfDNA, respectively. Bile cfDNA showed a significantly higher maximum allele frequency than plasma cfDNA (P = 0.0032). There were 56.2% of somatic single-nucleotide variant (SNVs)/insertions and deletions (indels) shared between bile and plasma cfDNA. When considering the genetic profiles of tumor tissues as the gold standard, the by-variant sensitivity and positive predictive value for SNVs/indels in bile cfDNA positive for somatic mutations were both 95.5%. The overall concordance for SNVs/indels in bile was significantly higher than that in plasma (99.1% versus 78.3%, P < 0.0001). Moreover, the sensitivity of CA 19-9 combined with bile cfDNA achieved 96.4% in BTC diagnosis.

CONCLUSION

We demonstrated that bile cfDNA was superior to plasma cfDNA in the detection of tumor-related genomic alterations. Bile cfDNA as a minimally invasive liquid biopsy medium might be a supplemental approach to confirm BTC diagnosis.

Exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones accelerate resuscitation of starved anaerobic granular sludge after long-term stagnation

So as to accelerate the resuscitation of starved anaerobic granular sludge after long-term stagnation, an innovative method was tried derived from the regulation of N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs)-mediated quorum sensing (QS). The mixture of four AHLs was added to the starved anaerobic granular sludge system in this research. The results confirmed that the exogenous AHLs shortened the recovery time of the granular sludge, and improved the treatment performance and methanogenic capacity of the recovered anaerobic sludge to the level before stagnation. At the same time, exogenous AHLs enhanced the synthesis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) during the resuscitation period of starved anaerobic granular sludge. The outcomes of microbial composition detection showed that the change of bacterial and methanogenic bacteria communities towards accelerated performance recovery was significantly correlated with exogenous AHLs. This exploration provided a new technical idea for speeding up the recovery of starved anaerobic granular sludge.

Exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones promote the degradation of refractory organics in oligotrophic anaerobic granular sludge

For refractory industrial wastewaters, anaerobic granular sludge technology cannot be widely used because of its limited treatment capacity, so strengthening the anaerobic degradation of refractory organics should be discussed. In this paper, the feasibility of adding exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) to promote the degradation of refractory organics in oligotrophic anaerobic granular sludge was addressed. The results showed that, after easily-degradable organics were completely metabolized, exogenous AHLs strengthened the further degradation of refractory organics and improved the methanogenic activity of anaerobic granular sludge. In addition, adding AHLs could promote the secretion of more extracellular polysaccharides and proteins by anaerobic microorganisms to resist the oligotrophic environment. Microbiological analysis showed that adding AHLs significantly optimized the microbial community in oligotrophic anaerobic granular sludge. With the regulation of AHLs, the abundance proportion of hydrolytic acidifying bacteria for refractory organics in bacterial community and the abundance proportion of acetotrophic methanogens in methanogens community increased obviously. Exogenous AHLs showed concentration-related effects on the optimization of bacteria and methanogens, and AHLs of higher concentration were beneficial to the succession of community structure in a better direction. Exogenous regulation of AHLs-mediated QS provided an attractive strategy for enhancing the anaerobic degradation of refractory organics, and proposed a technical idea for the application of anaerobic granular sludge technology in refractory industrial wastewaters.

Study on adsorption of ammonia nitrogen by iron-loaded activated carbon from low temperature wastewater

In order to improve the adsorption efficiency of ammonia nitrogen in low temperature wastewater, the modified activated carbon (Fe-AC) was prepared by impregnation-calcination modification of Fe(NO₃)₃. The characterization results indicated that the total pore volume, specific surface area and the point of zero charge of activated carbon increased after modification. A better adsorption effect was achieved under neutral condition than under alkaline or acidic condition. The effect of Ca²⁺ on competitive adsorption of NH₄⁺ was greater than that of Na⁺ when both cations were present. Pseudo-first-order kinetic model was confirmed to be consistent with Fe-AC adsorption kinetic data, and Langmuir model was consistent with adsorption isotherm data. The adsorption thermodynamics demonstrated that the ammonia nitrogen adsorption process by Fe-AC was spontaneous and low-temperature was helpful to improve the adsorption capacity. The mechanism of adsorption of ammonia nitrogen by Fe-AC was the comprehensive effect of physical adsorption and chemical adsorption, which was the essential reason for improving the adsorption efficiency of ammonia nitrogen by Fe-AC at a low temperature. This research offered a new way for the modification of activated carbon and a new method for the removal of ammonia nitrogen at a low temperature.

Effect of iron and manganese on ammonium removal from micro-polluted source water by immobilized HITLi7T at 2 °C

In this study, trace metals (Fe & Mn) were applied to enhance NH₄⁺-N removal in source water at 2 °C, and 22.7% of initial 2.20 mg/L NH₄⁺-N was removed by pre-treating granular activated carbon (GAC) with Fe & Mn before immobilizing Acinetobacter harbinensis HITLi7^T to form biological activated carbon (BAC). Biomass and dehydrogenase activity (DHA) on this modified BAC were 2.80 × 10⁸ CFU/g-DW C and 0.50 mg/L/g-DW C, respectively, both the highest. Additionally, 4.76 times more biomass and 9.76 times higher DHA of HITLi7^T were observed in the cultivation with Fe & Mn dosing. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) measurements found Fe & Mn dosing could increase total EPS amount (44.3% higher) and polysaccharide (PS) ratio (1.50% higher) secreted by HITLi7^T. According to the results of 3D-excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectra and infrared spectra (FTIR) analysis, Fe and Mn promoted the secretion of tryptophan-like substances and changed functional groups COH, COC, CO and COOH, which are associated with protein and PS.

Negative Association of Serum URIC Acid with Peripheral Blood Cellular Aging Markers

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to explore the association between serum UA and cellular aging markers.

DESIGN

The current cross-sectional analysis was based on data collected within a type 2 diabetes project.

SETTINGS

Serum uric acid (UA), which has both antioxidant and pro-oxidant properties, is thought to be involved in cellular aging processes.

PARTICIPANTS

There are 536 participants included in total, 65.3% of which are women. The average serum UA in women was 267.8 umol/l, lower than in men of 337.7 umol/l (P<0.001).

MEASUREMENTS

Serum UA, blood lipid profile, HbA1c, plasma glucose and insulin were determined. The peripheral blood leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) were assessed using a real-time PCR assay. Logistic regressions were used to analyze the associations between serum UA and cellular aging markers.

RESULTS

In Spearman's correlation analysis, there were significantly negative correlations between serum UA and LTL in both women and men (r=-0.162, P=0.006; and r=-0.232, P=0.004, respectively). The logistic regression adjusted for age, BMI, WC, daily energy intake, HbA1c, TG, and LDL-C revealed that the ORs of shorter LTL comparing the extreme serum UA quintiles was 5.52 (95% CI 1.69-18.02; P for trend =0.025) in women and 6.49 (95% CI 1.38-30.45; P for trend =0.108) in men. Furthermore, the OR (95% CI) for shorter LTL per 1 SD increment in serum UA was 1.51(1.10-2.07) in women and 1.64(1.01-2.65) in men. In regard to mtDNAcn, the association between elevated serum UA and lower mtDNAcn only reached significance in men when comparing the second and fifth quintiles with reference quintile (OR=3.73(1.07-13.04) and 3.76(1.01-14.09) , separately, and P for trend=0.066).

CONCLUSIONS

Our results indicate a significant negative association between serum UA and peripheral blood cellular aging markers. Serum UA might play a role in promoting cellular aging.

Evaluation of phase separation in a single-stage vertical anaerobic reactor: Performance and microbial composition analysis

In order to explore whether the acidogenic phase and methanogenic phase could be separated vertically into a single-stage anaerobic reactor, a controlled double circulation (CDC) anaerobic reactor was proposed for treating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wastewater in this study. The results showed that most of the organic pollutants and refractory were removed in the first reaction area where most of the amount of sludge existed. The organic acids were accumulated in the first reaction area, and larger specific methanogenic activity (SMA) and coenzyme F₄₂₀ values were found in the second reaction area. Bacterial and archaeal community structures in the two reaction areas of the CDC reactor were analyzed by Illumina MiSeq Sequencing, which revealed that the archaeal community showed larger difference compared with the bacterial community. Differences in the performance and microbial composition of the two reaction areas confirmed that phase separation was implemented in the CDC reactor.

Botulinum toxin A treatment of epiphora secondary to autologous submandibular gland transplantation

The aim of this study was to explore whether botulinum toxin A (BTXA) injection treats epiphora secondary to submandibular gland (SMG) transplantation for severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Fifteen patients with epiphora after SMG transplantation were separated to three groups, and received 15U, 20U and 25U BTXA injection in the transplanted SMG, respectively. Secretion of transplanted SMG was assessed subjectively by visual analogue scale (VAS) regarding epiphora, and objectively by Schirmer test. There were no significant differences in the 15-U BTXA group regarding the values of the VAS on epihora before and 1 month after BTXA injection. While in 20-U group and 25-U group, the values of VAS on epihora decreased significantly after BTXA injection, and lasted for 6months. Under resting conditions, the secretion of transplanted SMG decreased 64.4%, 73.0% and 78.0% in 15-U, 20-U and 25-U groups, respectively (P<0.01), in 1month after BTXA injection; significant secretion decreasing lasted 3months only in the 25-U BTXA group. BTXA injection can decrease the secretion of transplanted SMG significantly, relieving the symptoms of epiphora; 25U BTXA is a suitable dose to treat 'opportunistic epiphora' after SMG transplantation.

Exogenous acyl-homoserine lactones adjust community structures of bacteria and methanogens to ameliorate the performance of anaerobic granular sludge

Quorum sensing (QS) signalling has been extensively studied in single species populations, activated sludge, biofilm and aerobic granular sludge. However, ecological roles of QS in anaerobic granular sludge, particularly in the content of the relationship between QS signalling and microbial community composition and function, have been rarely reported. Herein, five acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) molecules were added in the anaerobic granular sludge system for treating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wastewater respectively. The results indicated that the introduction of specific AHLs could enhance the abilities of organic matters removal and methanation in anaerobic granular sludge, and meanwhile, exogenous AHLs played an important role to regulate the concentration of EPS. Sequencing analysis indicated that microbial community structures of bacteria and methanogens changed to varying degrees by adding AHLs. This study suggested that exogenous AHLs could play a role in mediating microbial community structure, thereby enhancing the performance of anaerobic granular sludge. The regulatory mechanism of AHLs on community structure was discussed, and a speculative action model was established. Exogenous regulation by selective enhancement of AHLs-mediated QS in anaerobic granular sludge provided an innovative and attractive strategy for strengthening wastewater treatments.

Substrates removal and growth kinetic characteristics of a heterotrophic nitrifying-aerobic denitrifying bacterium, Acinetobacter harbinensis HITLi7T at 2 °C

In order to investigate the heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification ability of Acinetobacter harbinensis HITLi7^T at 2 °C, both the growth parameters and substrates utilization characteristics were tested and appropriated kinetic models were obtained in this study. Under the initial concentration of 5 mg/L, the maximum NH₄⁺-N and NO₃^--N degradation rates were 0.076 mg NH₄⁺-N/L/h and 0.029 mg NO₃^--N/L/h, respectively. At the simultaneous presence of 2.5 mg/L NH₄⁺-N and NO₃^--N, the maximum nitrate removal rate increased to 0.054 mg NO₃^--N/L/h (1.86 folds), while a slight decrease was observed in NH₄⁺-N removal. Two double-substrate models, Contois-Contois (1) for NH₄⁺-N and TOC, Monod-Contois (2) for NO₃^--N and TOC matched well with the experimental data. The kinetic parameters were determined as μ_max1 = 0.095 h^-1, B_A1 = 0.012 mg/L, B_T1 = 0.784 g TOC/g biomass (R₁² = 0.9997), and μ_max2 = 0.032 h^-1, K_N2 = 0.375 mg/L, B_T2 = 1.108 g TOC/g biomass (R₂² = 0.9731) by multiple regression equation.

Predicting acute toxicity of traditional Chinese medicine wastewater using UV absorption and volatile fatty acids as surrogates

In this study, the applicability of UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV₂₅₄) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) to serve as reliable surrogates to predict acute toxicity of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wastewater was investigated. The medicine residues and VFAs were identified as main components of the TCM wastewater, and their individual and joint toxicity assays were operated with luminescent bacteria. The median effective concentration (EC₅₀) values of medicine residues and VFAs were in the range of 26.46-165.55 mg/L and 11.45-20.58 g/L, respectively. The joint toxicity action modes of medicine residues, VFAs and medicine residues-VFAs were identified as additive, additive and synergistic respectively. UV₂₅₄ and VFAs showed better correlations with acute toxicity according to the correlation analysis, compared with other conventional parameters. The regression model was a good fit for toxic unit (TU₅₀) as a function of UV₂₅₄ and VFAs according to the stepwise regression method (adjusted R² = 0.836). Validation of the model to the pilot-scale samples provided satisfactory prediction results in the influent and hydrolysis acidification effluent samples tests, but for EGSB effluent and final effluent samples, the model needed further optimization. Surrogates prediction using UV₂₅₄ and VFAs provided a valuable and cost-saving tool for rapid or on-line monitoring of acute toxicity of TCM wastewater.

Severe dry eye is a refractory ophthalmologic disease. Our multidisciplinary research group treated severe dry eye by microvascular autologous transplantation of submandibular gland (SMG) during the past 20 years. The SMG, with its blood vessels and Wharton's duct, was harvested from the submandibular triangle and transferred to the temporal area. The blood vessels in the SMG were anastomosed with the temporal blood vessels using a microsurgical technique. Then, the distal end of Wharton's duct was sutured to form an opening in the upper lateral conjunctival fold. The tear was replaced by the secretion of the transplanted SMG to lubricate the ocular surface. In our study, the surgical techniques of blood vessel management were continuously modified to increase the survival rate of the transplanted SMG. A novel surgical modality of partial transplantation of SMG was established to prevent postoperative epiphora. A clinical study with the largest case number in the world was conducted and the effectiveness of transplantation of SMG for severe dry eye was fully confirmed. In order to resolve two main clinical problems including ductal obstruction resulted from low secretion rate during the latent period, and epiphora due to over secretion of the transplanted SMG in the later term of transplantation, the regulation of the secretion mechanism of the normal and transplanted SMG were investigated. New opinions on mechanisms of saliva secretion were provided. Based on the priniciple of translational medicine, the results of related basic research were applied in the clinic. The clinical guidelines for secretion regulation of transplanted SMG were established. A concept of chronic obstructive sialadenitis of transplanted SMG was provided and its diagnostic criteria, diagnostic technique of sialography, and therapeutic regimen were established. As a result, the surgical success rate was obviously elevated, the surgical complications were decreased, and life quality of the patients was greatly improved.

Auditory verbal hallucinations are related to cortical thinning in the left middle temporal gyrus of patients with schizophrenia

BACKGROUND

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are one of the most common and severe symptoms of schizophrenia, but the neuroanatomical abnormalities underlying AVHs are not well understood. The present study aims to investigate whether AVHs are associated with cortical thinning.

METHODS

Participants were schizophrenia patients from four centers across China, 115 with AVHs and 93 without AVHs, as well as 261 healthy controls. All received 3 T T1-weighted brain scans, and whole brain vertex-wise cortical thickness was compared across groups. Correlations between AVH severity and cortical thickness were also determined.

RESULTS

The left middle part of the middle temporal gyrus (MTG) was significantly thinner in schizophrenia patients with AVHs than in patients without AVHs and healthy controls. Inferences were made using a false discovery rate approach with a threshold at p < 0.05. Left MTG thickness did not differ between patients without AVHs and controls. These results were replicated by a meta-analysis showing them to be consistent across the four centers. Cortical thickness of the left MTG was also found to be inversely correlated with hallucination severity across all schizophrenia patients.

CONCLUSION

The results of this multi-center study suggest that an abnormally thin left MTG could be involved in the pathogenesis of AVHs in schizophrenia.

Prevalence of honeybee viruses in different regions of China and Argentina

Honeybees are threatened by various pathogens and parasites. More than 18 viruses have been described in honeybees and many of them have been detected in China and Argentina. In China, both Apis cerana and Apis mellifera are raised. In Argentina, beekeepers raise different ecotypes of A. mellifera: European honeybees (in both temperate and subtropical regions) and Africanised honeybees (in subtropical areas only). A thorough study was carried out in both China and Argentina to analyse the current virus presence and distribution in different climatic zones and gather information on different bee species/subspecies. Adult honeybees were collected from apiaries in temperate and subtropical regions of China (including areas with exclusive populations of A. mellifera, areas where A. mellifera and A. cerana co-exist, and areas with exclusive populations of A. cerana) and Argentina. Six viruses, namely, deformed wing virus (DWV), black queen cell virus (BQCV), sacbrood virus (SBV), chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV), acute bee paralysis virus (ABPV) and Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV) were detected in China, both in A. cerana and in A. mellifera, while four viruses (DWV, BQCV, CBPV and ABPV) were present in Argentina. Interestingly, multiple infections were commonly found in China, with up to five different viruses co-circulating in some colonies without apparent abnormalities. In this study, no Chinese samples were positive for slow bee paralysis virus. The most prevalent viruses were BQCV (China) and DWV (Argentina). Kashmir bee virus was absent from samples analysed for both countries.

CDKN2B deletion is essential for pancreatic cancer development instead of unmeaningful co-deletion due to juxtaposition to CDKN2A

Pancreatic cancer is among the deadliest malignancies; however, the genetic events that lead to pancreatic carcinogenesis in adults remain unclear. In vivo models in which these genetic alterations occur in adult animals may more accurately reflect the features of human cancer. In this study, we demonstrate that inactivation of Cdkn2b (p15ink4b) is necessary for induction of pancreatic cancer by oncogenic KRAS^G12D expression and inactivation of Tp53 and Cdkn2a in adult mouse pancreatic ductal cells (P60 or older). KRAS^G12D overexpression in these cells activated transforming growth factor-β signaling and expression of CDKN2B, which, along with CDKN2A, led to cellular senescence and protected cells from KRAS-mediated transformation via inhibition of retinoblastoma phosphorylation. These results show a critical role of CDKN2B inactivation in pancreatic carcinogenesis, and provide a useful adult animal model by genetic engineering via lentiviral delivery.

Microbial community composition and function in a pilot-scale anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic combined process for the treatment of traditional Chinese medicine wastewater

Biodegradation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wastewater was investigated in a pilot-scale anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic combined process, which was composed of an expanded granular sludge blanket (EGSB) reactor, a hydrolysis acidification (HA) reactor and a biological contact oxidation (BCO) reactor. In stable stage, the average values of COD and color in the combined process effluent were 45.7mgL^-1 and 13 times, respectively. Excellent linear relations (R²>0.915) were achieved between color and UV₂₅₄ at three color levels. Comprehensive community structures of the combined process were analysed by Illumina MiSeq Sequencing, which revealed that microbial community in the aerobic reactor had the greatest diversity and richness. Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were dominant phyla in the three reactors, and Bacteroidales, Geobacter, ZB2 were the predominant functional microorganisms in the anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic reactors, respectively. Good removal efficiencies and presence of core microorganisms confirmed that the combined process was feasible for treating TCM wastewater.
