Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study is to evaluate the association of metabolic and glycemic variables with semen parameters in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) with and without erectile dysfunction (ED). METHODS The study population included 88 adults with T1D using a continuous glucose monitoring, of whom 28 with ED (ED group) and 60 without it (NO ED group). All men completed the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) and underwent body composition analysis (BIA) and semen analysis. RESULTS ED group showed worse HbA1c levels [median (IQR), 8.4 (7.7, 9.9) vs 7.4 (7, 8.2) %, P < 0.001)], higher insulin dose [60 (51, 65) vs 45 (38, 56) UI/die, P = 0.004)] and a higher total body water and intracellular water as compared with ED group. Men in the ED group presented higher semen volume [2.8 (2.6, 4.2) vs 2.5 (2.2, 2.7) mL, P < 0.001] and sperm concentration [24 (19, 29) vs 20 (12, 23) mil/mL, P = 0.010], but reduced sperm progressive motility [28 (25, 35) vs 35 (25, 36) %, P = 0.011], higher rate of non-progressive motility [15 (10, 15) vs 10 (5, 10) %, P < 0.001] and higher rate of typical morphology [7(5, 8) vs 5 (4, 5) %, P = 0.001]. Based on multivariate logistic regression analysis performed to assess the association between clinical variables and ED, intracellular water (OR 3.829, 95% CI 1.205, 12.163, P = 0.023) resulted as the only independent predictor of ED. CONCLUSION Men with T1D and ED showed worse metabolic profile which is associated with poor semen quality, as compared with those without ED.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Can anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) help predict how many oocytes will be retrieved following double stimulation (DuoStim)? SUMMARY ANSWER A simple clinical tool can use serum AMH values to predict ovarian response following DuoStim in IVF cycles. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN The knowledge that multiple follicular waves arise during a single ovarian cycle has led to the introduction of unconventional ovarian stimulation protocols. The DuoStim protocol involves two successive ovarian stimulations performed during a single ovarian cycle and has been proposed as an approach for patients with poor ovarian response and for medical fertility preservation. As AMH has been used as a marker of ovarian reserve and stimulation response, the current study aimed to investigate the diagnostic performance of AMH in predicting the number of retrieved oocytes following DuoStim. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This is a retrospective observational study involving 116 patients who received IVF treatment from January 2021 to September 2022. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS The study was conducted at a private IVF centre. Only patients who had their AMH measured prior to treatment and had complete patient records regarding their clinical and IVF/ICSI cycle characteristics were included. The primary outcome was the correlation between AMH values and the number of oocytes retrieved following DuoStim. Parametric and non-parametric tests were used to compare baseline characteristics and outcomes. Spearman's R was used to analyse correlations between variables, while the C statistic was used to calculate the diagnostic performance of AMH. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE AMH levels were significantly correlated with the total number of oocytes retrieved after the DuoStim (R 0.61; CI 0.44-0.70; P < 0.0001). The difference in the total number of oocytes retrieved between the first (median 4 oocytes, interquartile range (IQR) 2-6) and second (median 6 oocytes, IQR 3.2-8) stimulation was statistically significant (P < 0.0001). However, there was no significant difference in the number of mature oocytes that were retrieved (median of 3 and 4 in the first and second stimulations, respectively). After the first stimulation, 68% of patients had at least one blastocyst available, while after the second stimulation, 74% did (NS). Based on linear regression, each 0.25 ng/ml increase in basal AMH corresponds to one additional oocyte recovered at the end of both stimulations (R2: 0.32, P < 0.0001). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The results are limited owing to the observational nature of the study and the number of participants. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Counselling infertile couples regarding the intermediate outcome of IVF (i.e. number of retrieved oocytes) is one of the most demanding tasks that clinicians face. To our knowledge, this is the first study that provides an easy-to-use clinical tool that enables the quantitative prediction of ovarian response following DuoStim, based on serum AMH values. Abstract
BACKGROUND A survey of laboratories in North American and Europe that routinely conduct fetal skeletal examinations was performed with the purpose of (1) understanding current terminology used for classifying skeletal findings in developmental toxicity (DT) studies and (2) understanding the criteria used to identify relatively common findings that sufficiently deviate from normal. The goal was to promote terminology harmonization and improve interlaboratory consistency in the criteria used to identify developmental anomalies. METHODS The survey, designed based on terminology for developmental anomalies recommended by an international collaboration (Makris et al., Congenital Anomalies, 2009;49(3):123-246), was conducted by a subgroup (authors of this publication) of the Royal Society of Biology's International Register of Fetal Morphologists (IRFM). RESULTS Individual and summarized anonymized responses are provided here. The authors, who are expert fetal morphologists with experience performing fetal examinations, reviewed the responses and generated recommendations on preferred terminology and criteria for determining when morphological variations deviate from normal and warrant recording of the findings for skeletal observations in Sprague Dawley (SD) fetal rats. The objective of these recommendations is to complement Makris et al. (Congenital Anomalies, 2009;49(3):123-246). CONCLUSION The broad application will improve interlaboratory harmonization of recording fetal skeleton findings in developmental toxicity studies intended for regulatory submissions, including SEND (Standard for Exchange of Nonclinical Data).

Abstract
Understanding and sensing microbial biofilm formation onto surfaces remains highly challenging for preventing corrosion and biofouling processes. For that purpose, we have thoroughly investigated biofilm formation onto glassy carbon electrode surfaces by using electrochemical technics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was studied because of its remarkable ability to form biofilms in many environments. The modification of the electrode-solution interface during biofilm growth was monitored by in-situ measurement of the open-circuit potential and correlated with results obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy and bioassays. The sensing of the biofilm formation hence suggests a multi-steps mechanism, which may include pre-formation of an insulating layer onto the surface prior to the bacteria adhesion and biofilm formation.

Study question
How do the ultrasound characteristics of adenomyosis modify during pregnancy?
Summary answer
Signs of adenomyosis are visible in pregnancy and progressively disappear through gestation; adenomyosis was associated with an increased risk of miscarriage in the 1st trimester.
What is known already
Women with uterine adenomyosis may be asymptomatic (35%) or report menorrhagia (50%), dysmenorrhea (30%) and metrorrhagia (20%). Several authors recently linked this condition to subfertility since many women with “unexplained infertility” were found to have adenomyosis. Being relatively inexpensive and accurate, ultrasound is now considered the imaging modality of choice for diagnosing adenomyosis. Although the increasing interest towards the adenomyosis there are no data on the identification of sign of adenomyosis among pregnant women and evaluating their changes throughout the pregnancy.
Study design, size, duration
This is a retrospective exploratory cohort study conducted between 2016 and 2020 including 254 women of which 66 were diagnosed as having focal or diffuse adenomyosis (according to the MUSA classification) before conception or during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. The remaining 188 women were used as controls.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
Women were included if they had at least one pre-conceptional transvaginal ultrasound scan documenting adenomyosis, at least one scan per trimester and known maternal and neonatal outcomes. Diagnosis of adenomyosis was based on the MUSA classification and the recent consensus classification system for adenomyosis. We evaluated if the signs of adenomyosis were visible later in pregnancy and post-partum. Obstetric and neonatal outcomes were compared between women with or without these signs.
Main results and the role of chance
The globular aspect of the uterus was reported in 79% women with adenomyosis in the 1st trimester: it progressively disappeared, being present in only 38% and 2% women in the 2nd and 3rd trimester respectively and again visible in the post-partum in 65% women. Asymmetrical thickening (30%) and cysts (23%) were reported in the 1st trimester and disappeared during pregnancy. Adenomyosis was associated with miscarriage (OR 5.9 95%CI 2.4-14.9, p < 0.001) also when considering only normal conception (OR 5.1 95%CI 1.8-14.2, p = 0.002) or when correcting for maternal age (aOR 5.9, CI95% 2.3-15.2, p < 0.001). Gestational age at delivery was lower in women with adenomyosis (p = 0.004); Caesarean Sections (CS) rate was higher than in controls (OR 2.5, CI95% 1.3-4.8, p = 0.007) and this was confirmed (OR 2.4 CI95% 1.1-5, p = 0.02) also excluding women with previous CS.
Limitations, reasons for caution
These findings are from a monocentric retrospective study including only patients with known obstetric outcomes diagnosed with adenomyosis. Analysis was not stratified according to the mode of conception because of the small sample size, possibly introducing a bias in pregnancy outcomes.
Wider implications of the findings
Despite their progressive disappearance, signs of adenomyosis can be clinically relevant since associated with an increased risk of miscarriage in the first trimester also when considering only women with normal conception. Adenomyosis per se might have an influence on endometrial molecular expression resulting in impaired implantation and early development.

Risk factors associated with poorer experiences of end-of-life care and challenges in early bereavement: Results of a national online survey of people bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract
BACKGROUND Experiences of end-of-life care and early bereavement during the COVID-19 pandemic are poorly understood. AIM To identify clinical and demographic risk factors for sub-optimal end-of-life care and pandemic-related challenges prior to death and in early bereavement, to inform clinical practice, policy and bereavement support. DESIGN Online national survey of adults bereaved in the UK (deaths between 16 March 2020 and 2 January 2021), recruited via media, social media, national associations and organisations. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS 711 participants, mean age 49.5 (SD 12.9, range 18-90). 628 (88.6%) were female. Mean age of the deceased was 72.2 (SD 16.1, range miscarriage to 102 years). 311 (43.8%) deaths were from confirmed/suspected COVID-19. RESULTS Deaths in hospital/care home increased the likelihood of poorer experiences at the end of life; for example, being unable to visit or say goodbye as wanted (p < 0.001). COVID-19 was also associated with worse experiences before and after death; for example, feeling unsupported by healthcare professionals (p < 0.001), social isolation/loneliness (OR = 0.439; 95% CI: 0.261-0.739), and limited contact with relatives/friends (OR = 0.465; 95% CI: 0.254-0.852). Expected deaths were associated with a higher likelihood of positive end-of-life care experiences. The deceased being a partner or child also increased the likelihood of positive experiences, however being a bereaved partner strongly increased odds of social isolation/loneliness, for example, OR = 0.092 (95% CI: 0.028-0.297) partner versus distant family member. CONCLUSIONS Four clear risk factors were found for poorer end-of-life care and pandemic-related challenges in bereavement: place, cause and expectedness of death, and relationship to the deceased.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study is aimed at evaluating changes in metrics of glucose control in home-isolated patients with type 1 diabetes and COVID-19 using a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system. METHODS We included adults aged 18-45 years with type 1 diabetes, using CGM, followed by telemedicine at a Southern Italian University Hospital. Thirty-two home-quarantined subjects with SARS-CoV-2 positive swab constituted the COVID-19 group. Thirty age-matched diabetic individuals without COVID-19 formed the control group. The effects of COVID-19 on glycemic control in patients infected were assessed at different time points [2 weeks before-COVID-19 (Time 1), 2 weeks during-COVID-19 (Time 2) and 2 weeks after COVID-19 (Time 3)] and compared with those without infection. RESULTS A significant reduction of TIR (Time 1 vs Time 2, %, 60.1 ± 16.6 vs 55.4 ± 19.2, P = 0.03), associated with a significant increase of TAR level 2 (10.1 ± 7.3 vs 16.7 ± 12.9, P < 0.001), GMI (7.1 ± 0.6 vs 7.5 ± 0.8, P < 0.001), CV (37.3 ± 7.1 vs 39.6 ± 7.0, P = 0.04), mean glucose values (mg/dL, 160.2 ± 26.5 vs 175.5 ± 32.6, P = 0.001) and standard deviation (59.2 ± 13.1 vs 68.6 ± 17.7, P = 0.001) was observed in patients with COVID-19. No significant change of glycemic metrics was found in the NO COVID-19 group across the time. CONCLUSION Young home-isolated patients with type 1 diabetes and COVID-19 showed a worsening of glucose control during COVID-19, as compared with age-matched diabetic subjects without the infection.

Abstract
As the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic continues to rage worldwide, the emergence of numerous variants of concern (VOC) represents a challenge for the vaccinal protective efficacy and the reliability of commercially available high-throughput immunoassays. Our study demonstrates the administration of two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine that elicited a robust SARS-CoV-2-specific immune response which was assessed up to 3 months after full vaccination in a cohort of 37 health care workers (HCWs). SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody response, evaluated by four commercially available chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA), was qualitatively consistent with the results provided by the gold-standard in vitro neutralization assay (NTA). However, we could not observe a correlation between the quantity of the antibody detected by CLIA assays and their neutralizing activity tested by NTA. Almost all subjects developed a SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cell response. Moreover, vaccinated HCWs developed a similar protective neutralizing antibodies response against the EU (B.1), Alpha (B.1.1.7), Gamma (P.1), and Eta (B.1.525) SARS-CoV-2 variants, while Beta (B.1.351) and Delta (B.1.617.2) strains displayed a consistent partial immune evasion. These results underline the importance of a solid vaccine-elicited immune response and a robust antibody titre. We believe that these relevant results should be taken into consideration in the definition of future vaccinal strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE The diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency is based on the determination of total plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations, but the regulation of vitamin D 25-hydroxylation is not a major consideration and very little information is available on this activity. To check what factors could interfere with the activity of vitamin D-25-hydroxylase and thus alter the 25-OHD concentrations, we looked for potential correlations between 25-OHD and results of liver function tests in healthy adults. METHODS This single-centre study was retrospective and consisted of evaluating the correlations between 25-OHD and the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) in 349 healthy subjects aged from 18 to 65 years. In particular, in Group 1 (n = 119), we looked for correlations between 25OHD and all liver function tests and in Group 2 (n = 230) the correlation between 25OHD and BALP. RESULTS In Group 1, we found no correlation between 25OHD and AST (r = - 0.03; p = 0.8), ALT (r = - 0.02; p = 0.91), GGT (r = - 0.08; p = 0.68), direct bilirubin (r = - 0.02; p = 0.89), indirect bilirubin (r = - 0.24; p = 0.21), and total bilirubin (r = - 0.24; p = 0.21) but one between 25OHD and ALP (r = - 0.2; p = 0.007); in Group 2, we found a significant negative correlation between 25-OHD and BALP (r = - 0.2; p = 0.0008). CONCLUSIONS The correlations that we found suggest that ALP and BALP might be involved in the regulation of vitamin D-25-hydroxylase activity, but further studies are mandatory to confirm our assumptions.

Abstract
Concerns about ammonia (NH3) losses from nitrogen (N) mineral fertilizers have forced policymakers to set emission reduction commitments across Europe. Although best available techniques (BATs) have been recommended, large uncertainties still exist due to poorly targeted site-specific approaches that might compromise their effectiveness. Here we proposed and tested a conceptual framework designed to identify most effective BATs that reduce NH3 at the site-specific level. The study was conducted in the Veneto region, northeast Italy. After the mapping of NH3 emission potential areas, BATs and business-as-usual N fertilization scenarios were assessed using a modified version of the DNDC agroecosystem model and compared with urea broadcast distribution under different pedo-climatic conditions. The most promising practices were further tested in a field experiment using a wind tunnel combined with a FTIR gas analyzer. Results showed that closed-slot injection reduced NH3 emissions with any type of mineral or organic fertilizers. Injected application, with ammonium nitrate or organic fertilizers, reduced NH3 loss in maize by 75% and 96%, respectively, and in winter wheat by 87% and 98%, compared to surface broadcast. Injection was the most promising technology to support, being already available to farmers. However, some increase in nitrate leaching was observed, mostly in case of winter wheat (+24% for AN injection; +89% for organic fertilizers). By contrast, urea incorporation with hoeing, the most common technique used by farmers in spring crops, did not show satisfactory results, because the partial burial of urea caused strong NH3 emissions that were even higher compared to surface broadcast. Recommended NH3 reduction techniques should be tailored to local pedo-climatic and management conditions, and evaluated, in a holistic approach, considering all N fluxes in the environment.

Introduction
We previously demonstrated in mouse models of peripheral and heart ischemia that miR-210 is necessary and sufficient to stimulate blood perfusion recovery, as well as arteriolar and capillary density increase following ischemic damage.
Aim
To clarify the role of inflammatory cells in miR-210-induced angiogenesis.
Methods and results
In a mouse model of acute limb ischemia, miR-210 loss-of-function was obtained by administration of complementary anti-miR-210 LNA oligonucleotides (anti-210), while doxycycline-inducible miR-210 transgenic mice (Tg210) were used for gain-of-function experiments. Transcriptomic and gene ontology analysis in ischemic gastrocnemius muscles upon miR-210 blocking displayed an enrichment of categories related not only to angiogenesis, but also to inflammation, suggesting that miR-210 decrease prompted a pro-inflammatory and anti-regenerative response. Accordingly, immunofluorescence staining of ischemic muscles of anti-210 treated mice, showed an increased presence of granulocytes (Scr = 28±7, anti-210 = 108±17 cells/mm2, p<0.001), T and B lymphocytes (Scr = 32±8 SE, anti-210 = 112±19 cells/mm2, p<0.003; Scr = 45±10, anti-210 = 103±14 cells/mm2, p<0.006, respectively) and macrophages (Scr = 17±1, anti-210 = 27±4 cells/mm2; p<0.03), with a higher M1/M2 macrophage ratio (Scr = 0.6±0.1, anti-210 = 1.7±0.3; p<0.02). Conversely macrophages (WT = 17±2, Tg210 = 5±1 cells/mm2, p<0.003) and M1/M2 ratio (WT = 1.0±0.1, Tg210 = 0.3±0.1, p<0.02) were decreased in ischemic TG-210 mice. To clarify the role of inflammatory cells in miR-210-induced angiogenesis, bone-marrow (BM) transplantation experiments were performed. Tg210 mice transplanted with WT BM cells (BM-wt/R-Tg210), compared with WT mice transplanted with Tg210 BM (BM-Tg210/R-wt) showed increased blood perfusion (vascularity ratio: BM-wt/R-Tg210 = 0.8±0.1, BM-Tg210/R-wt = 0.6±0.1; p<0.01) and capillary density after ischemia (BM-wt/R-Tg210 = 497±41, BM-Tg210/R-wt = 212±32 cap./mm2; P<0.00001). Thus, miR-210 expression in the muscle and not in the BM-derived cells was crucial for miR-210-stimulated angiogenesis. Interestingly, BM-wt/R-Tg210 mice also showed increased fibrotic areas (sirius red staining: BM-wt/R-Tg210 = 12±2, BM-Tg210/R-wt = 22±3 A.U.; p<0.01), characterized by α-SMA+, vimentin+ and collagen V+ stainings. Fibrotic regions were enriched in cells double-positive for both CD206/α-SMA and CD45/α-SMA, as well as in phospho-Smad3+ cells, suggesting the activation of the TGFβ pathway. In vitro experiments showed higher expression of α-SMA and collagens in TG-210 BM-derived macrophages compared to WT, both in the presence and in the absence of TGFβ (α-SMA: w/o TGFβ 2.3±1.4 fold increase p<0.004; TGFβ+ 11.3±2 fold increase p<0.003).
Conclusions
Collectively, these data show that a miR-210 enriched milieu was sufficient to improve angiogenesis after ischemia. Moreover, a context-dependent regulation by miR-210 of the inflammatory response and of fibrosis were identified.

Abstract
The human telomeric G-quadruplex structural motif of DNA has come to be known as a new and stimulating target for anticancer drug discovery. Small molecules that interact with G-quadruplex structures in a selective way have gained impressive interest in recent years as they may serve as potential therapeutic agents. Here, we show how circular dichroism, UV resonance Raman and small angle X-ray scattering spectroscopies can be effectively combined to provide insights into structural and molecular aspects of the interaction between human telomeric quadruplexes and ligands. This study focuses on the ability of berberine and palmatine to bind with human telomeric quadruplexes and provides analysis of the conformational landscape visited by the relevant complexes upon thermal unfolding. With increasing temperature, both free and bound G-quadruplexes undergo melting through a multi-state process, populating different intermediate states. Despite the structural similarity of the two ligands, valuable distinctive features characterising their interaction with the G-quadruplex emerged from our multi-technique approach.

Abstract
AIM Over the last decades, the shift in age distribution towards older ages and the progressive ageing which has occurred in most populations have been paralleled by a global epidemic of obesity and its related metabolic disorders, primarily, type 2 diabetes (T2D). Dysfunction of the adipose tissue (AT) is widely recognized as a significant hallmark of the ageing process that, in turn, results in systemic metabolic alterations. These include insulin resistance, accumulation of ectopic lipids and chronic inflammation, which are responsible for an elevated risk of obesity and T2D onset associated to ageing. On the other hand, obesity and T2D, the paradigms of AT dysfunction, share many physiological characteristics with the ageing process, such as an increased burden of senescent cells and epigenetic alterations. Thus, these chronic metabolic disorders may represent a state of accelerated ageing. MATERIALS AND METHODS A more precise explanation of the fundamental ageing mechanisms that occur in AT and a deeper understanding of their role in the interplay between accelerated ageing and AT dysfunction can be a fundamental leap towards novel therapies that address the causes, not just the symptoms, of obesity and T2D, utilizing strategies that target either senescent cells or DNA methylation. RESULTS In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of the pathways that lead to AT dysfunction in the chronological ageing process as well as the pathophysiology of obesity and T2D, emphasizing the critical role of cellular senescence and DNA methylation. CONCLUSION Finally, we highlight the need for further research focused on targeting these mechanisms.

Background
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are an emerging class of noncoding RNAs stemming from the splicing and circularization of pre-mRNAs exons. CircRNAs can regulate transcription and splicing, sequester microRNAs acting as “sponge” and inducing the respective targets, and bind to RNA binding proteins. Recently, they have been found deregulated in dilated cardiomyopathies (DCM), one of the cardiovascular diseases with the worst rate of morbidity and mortality, and whose molecular mechanisms are only partially known.
Purpose
Therein, we will evaluate in ischemic DCM patients the modulation of 17 circRNAs, 14 out of them obtained from literature data on DCM ischemic or not, while the other 3 were circRNAs not characterized in the heart previously. The study aims to identify circRNAs candidates for further functional characterization in DCM. In addition, as differential expression (DE) analysis is not easily performed for circRNAs in RNA-seq datasets, the validated circRNAs will be used to set up the most specific and sensitive bioinformatics pipeline for circRNA-DE analysis.
Methods
We designed divergent and convergent specific primers for 17 circRNAs and their host gene, respectively, and their amplification efficiency was measured by RT-qPCR. Transcripts expression was measured in left ventricle biopsies of 12 patients affected by non end-stage ischemic HF and of 12 matched controls.
Results
We identified cPVT1, cANKRD17, cBPTF as DE, and validated the modulation of 5 out of the 14 DCM-related circRNAs (cHIPK3, cALPK2, cPCMTD1, cNEBL, cSLC8A1), while cPDRM5, cTTN1 showed opposite modulation, which may be due to the specific disease condition. All of them were modulated differently from the respective host gene. CircRNA/miRNA interactions were predicted using Starbase 3.0. Next, mRNAs-targets of the identified miRNAs were predicted by mirDIP 4.1 and intersected with gene expression datasets of the same patients, previously obtained by microarray analysis.
We found that cBPTF and cANKRD17 might sponge 12 and 2 miRNAs, respectively. Enrichment analysis of the relevant targets identified several important pathways implicated in DCM, such as MAPK, FoxO, EGFR, VEGF and Insulin/IGF pathways. In addition, deep RNA-Seq analysis that is currently ongoing and the validated circRNAs will be used to optimize the bioinformatics pipeline for circRNA DE analysis.
Conclusions
We identified a subset of circRNAs deregulated in ischemic HF potentially implicated in HF pathogenesis.

Abstract
A four-year-old Japanese Akita was referred for investigation of lethargy, exercise intolerance, and an irregular heart rhythm. He was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a complex ventricular arrhythmia, and hypothyroidism. Echocardiography identified a nest of anomalous vessels surrounding the heart and shunting into the pulmonary artery. Computed tomography confirmed a coronary arteriovenous malformation consisting of a coronary-to-pulmonary arterial communication and an associated complex nest of tortuous vessels, which was thought to be an incidental finding. Clinical signs improved with levothyroxine and antiarrhythmic treatment. Describing an unusual coronary artery anomaly as well, this case serves as a reminder to critically evaluate the hemodynamic significance of structural cardiac disease and to screen for systemic disease in patients with arrhythmias.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of orthodontic forces in healthy or diseased periodontium of rats submitted/not submitted to cigarette smoke inhalation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty-six male Wistar rats were allocated into two groups of conditions: smoking and non-smoking. Each group was divided into the following subgroups: control (C), orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), ligature-induced periodontitis (P) and P+OTM (POTM), with n = 14 each. Periodontitis was induced in the lower first molar by cotton ligature, and a 4 mm closed stainless steel spring was used for orthodontic movement. Animals were exposed to the smoke of 10 cigarettes for 8 minutes, 3 times a day for 60 days before P induction and OTM. Evaluation parameters were macroscopic analysis of dental movement, bone loss and bone density. In addition, the receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB (RANK) immunostaining and RANK ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio in the furcation region were assessed. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between groups, ie, smoking and non-smoking conditions (P = .338). Bone loss intragroup analysis between the P and POTM groups was not significant in smoking (P = 1) and non-smoking (P = .5) conditions; both were different from OTM and C in each condition. Regarding bone density, POTM and P were significant to C (P < .05). The POTM group was significant to the P and C (P = .001) regarding dental movement. The RANK ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio in the non-smoking condition was higher in P and POTM compared to C and OTM and to P and POTM in the smoking condition. RANK immunostaining was significant in the smoking condition for the P and POTM groups (P < .05). CONCLUSION Within the limitations of the present study, it was concluded that cigarette smoke inhalation had no influence on the evaluated groups, even with the presence of low levels of nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. The POTM groups did not present greater bone loss compared to P groups, thus periodontal disease is essential for bone loss.

Abstract
We reviewed the 8 malignant solid tumors in children less than 1 month of age observed at the Pediatric Surgical Department of Padua University from 1968 to 1985. These were 6 neuroblastomas, 1 Wilms' tumor and 1 angiosarcoma; 5/8 are alive without evidence of disease with a median follow-up of 8 years. The importance of combined therapeutic approach and conservative surgery are stressed. The sensitiveness of infants to both chemotherapy and radiotherapy are considered. Surgery remains the treatment of choice when a radical resection is possible.

Abstract
The underlying mechanism driving the structural amorphous-to-crystalline transition in Group VI chalcogenides is still a matter of debate even in the simplest GeTe system. We exploit the extreme sensitivity of 57Fe emission Mössbauer spectroscopy, following dilute implantation of 57Mn (T½ = 1.5 min) at ISOLDE/CERN, to study the electronic charge distribution in the immediate vicinity of the 57Fe probe substituting Ge (FeGe), and to interrogate the local environment of FeGe over the amorphous-crystalline phase transition in GeTe thin films. Our results show that the local structure of as-sputtered amorphous GeTe is a combination of tetrahedral and defect-octahedral sites. The main effect of the crystallization is the conversion from tetrahedral to defect-free octahedral sites. We discover that only the tetrahedral fraction in amorphous GeTe participates to the change of the FeGe-Te chemical bonds, with a net electronic charge density transfer of ~ 1.6 e/a0 between FeGe and neighboring Te atoms. This charge transfer accounts for a lowering of the covalent character during crystallization. The results are corroborated by theoretical calculations within the framework of density functional theory. The observed atomic-scale chemical-structural changes are directly connected to the macroscopic phase transition and resistivity switch of GeTe thin films.

Abstract
The structural defects in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, including point defects, dislocations and grain boundaries, are scarcely considered regarding their potential to manipulate the electrical and optical properties of this class of materials, notwithstanding the significant advances already made. Indeed, impurities and vacancies may influence the exciton population, create disorder-induced localization, as well as modify the electrical behaviour of the material. Here we report on the experimental evidence, confirmed by ab initio calculations, that sulfur vacancies give rise to a novel near-infrared emission peak around 0.75 eV in exfoliated MoS2 flakes. In addition, we demonstrate an excess of sulfur vacancies at the flake's edges by means of cathodoluminescence mapping, aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy imaging and electron energy loss analyses. Moreover, we show that ripplocations, extended line defects peculiar to this material, broaden and redshift the MoS2 indirect bandgap emission. Impurities and vacancies are commonly found within the crystalline lattice of transition metal dichalcogenides, however they are usually seen as detrimental for their optical properties. Abstract
A 9 year old male mixed-breed dog was presented for progressive aggressiveness towards the owner. The neurological evaluation was consistent with a forebrain syndrome. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed enlargement of the third ventricle and presence of a large spheroidal neoplasm in the sellar/parasellar region suggestive of a pituitary macroadenoma. On the owner request, the dog was euthanized. Histopathological examination revealed the presence of a pituitary chromophobe carcinoma. To the author’s knowledge, pituitary carcinomas have been rarely described in dogs, especially the chromophobe subtype.

Abstract
A hyperintense intervertebral disc on T1-weighted spin-echo MR image, the “bright disc”, is described in a patient with a long-standing ankylosing spondylitis. The high signal intensity was due to the fatty infiltration of the discal tissue, as was clearly demonstrated by the comparison of MR and CT scan of the lumbar spine, probably due to progressive endochondral ossification with subsequent bone marrow metaplasia in the ossified disc.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE MR imaging tractography is increasingly used to perform noninvasive presurgical planning for brain gliomas. Recently, constrained spherical deconvolution tractography was shown to overcome several limitations of commonly used DTI tractography. The purpose of our study was to evaluate WM tract alterations of both the corticospinal tract and arcuate fasciculus in patients with high-grade gliomas, through qualitative and quantitative analysis of probabilistic constrained spherical deconvolution tractography, to perform reliable presurgical planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty patients with frontoparietal high-grade gliomas were recruited and evaluated by using a 3T MR imaging scanner with both morphologic and diffusion sequences (60 diffusion directions). We performed probabilistic constrained spherical deconvolution tractography and tract quantification following diffusion tensor parameters: fractional anisotropy; mean diffusivity; linear, planar, and spherical coefficients. RESULTS In all patients, we obtained tractographic reconstructions of the medial and lateral portions of the corticospinal tract and arcuate fasciculus, both on the glioma-affected and nonaffected sides of the brain. The affected lateral corticospinal tract and the arcuate fasciculus showed decreased fractional anisotropy (z = 2.51, n = 20, P = .006; z = 2.52, n = 20, P = .006) and linear coefficient (z = 2.51, n = 20, P = .006; z = 2.52, n = 20, P = .006) along with increased spherical coefficient (z = -2.51, n = 20, P = .006; z = -2.52, n = 20, P = .006). Mean diffusivity values were increased only in the lateral corticospinal tract (z = -2.53, n = 20, P = .006). CONCLUSIONS In this study, we demonstrated that probabilistic constrained spherical deconvolution can provide essential qualitative and quantitative information in presurgical planning, which was not otherwise achievable with DTI. These findings can have important implications for the surgical approach and postoperative outcome in patients with glioma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE This study assessed the effects of the local use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as monotherapy and as an adjuvant to the mechanical treatment of ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Periodontitis was induced in 72 rats via the installation of a ligature around the mandibular first molar. After 7 d, the ligature was removed and the rats were placed in one of the following groups: no treatment (C; n = 18); scaling and root planing (SRP; n = 18); local irrigation with probiotics (PRO; n = 18); and SRP followed by local irrigation with probiotics (SRP/PRO; n = 18). Six rats from each group were killed at 7, 15 and 30 d. The histological characteristics, alveolar bone loss (ABL) and immunolabeling of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and TRAP on the furcation area of the first molar were assessed. RESULTS The PRO group showed features of acceleration of the tissue-repair process during the entire experiment. On day 15, there was less ABL in the SRP/PRO group compared with the C group. There were fewer TRAP-positive cells in the SRP and SRP/PRO groups at 30 d. There was less immunostaining for TNF-α in the PRO and SRP/PRO groups and less immunostaining for IL-1β in the PRO group. However, there was more immunostaining for IL-10 in the PRO group on day 15. CONCLUSION Local use of the probiotic did not result in any adverse effects on periodontal tissues. When used as monotherapy or as an adjuvant, the probiotic was effective at controlling periodontitis in rats.
