Seascape Genetics of the Atlantic Spotted Dolphin (Stenella frontalis) Based on Mitochondrial DNA. J Hered 2021; 112:646-662. Abstract
The Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) is endemic to tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout its distribution, both geographic distance and environmental variation may contribute to population structure of the species. In this study, we follow a seascape genetics approach to investigate population differentiation of Atlantic spotted dolphins based on a large worldwide dataset and the relationship with marine environmental variables. The results revealed that the Atlantic spotted dolphin exhibits population genetic structure across its distribution based on mitochondrial DNA control region (mtDNA-CR) data. Analyses based on the contemporary landscape suggested, at both the individual and population level, that the population genetic structure is consistent with the isolation-by-distance model. However, because geography and environmental matrices were correlated, and because in some, but not all analyses, we found a significant effect for the environment, we cannot rule out the addition contribution of environmental factors in structuring genetic variation. Future analyses based on nuclear data are needed to evaluate whether local processes, such as social structure and some level of philopatry within populations, may be contributing to the associations among genetic structure, geographic, and environmental distance.

Abstract
The Canary Islands are home to many cetacean species, many of which are resident species. The present work aims to analyze, for the first time to the best of the authors' knowledge, the macronutrients, micronutrients and trace elements and toxic heavy metals in muscle and liver tissue of six species of stranded cetaceans in the Canary Islands. The study species were: Tursiops truncatus, Stenella frontalis, Delphinus delphis, Grampus griseus, Globicephala macrorynchus and Physeter macrocephalus. Statistical analysis studied the significant differences between the concentrations in muscle and liver tissues, with the differences in element content depending on the type of diving and length of the species. The results indicate that there are differences between muscle and liver for Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr, V and Zn. Deep-diving animals differ in their concentrations of Cr, Cu, Mg, Mn, Mo, and Zn with respect to shallow-diving animals in muscle and in liver in Al, B, Cr, K, Mn and Mo. As for the differences between sex, the males present differences in their concentrations of B, Cd, K and Mg in muscle tissue with respect to the females, while differences in the liver were only detected in the Fe content. The study of the correlations shows that as the size of the animal increases, the concentration of Cd increases while the concentrations of Al, Cu and Zn decrease. The specimens foraging in shallower waters had the highest concentration of the macronutrient.

Abstract
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted Alzheimer’s disease (AD) clinical studies worldwide. Digital technologies may help minimize disruptions by enabling remote assessment of subtle cognitive and functional changes over the course of the disease. The EU/US Clinical Trials in Alzheimer’s Disease (CTAD) Task Force met virtually in November 2020 to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of digital technologies in AD clinical research. While recognizing the potential of digital tools to accelerate clinical trials, improve the engagement of diverse populations, capture clinically meaningful data, and lower costs, questions remain regarding the stability, validity, generalizability, and reproducibility of digital data. Substantial concerns also exist regarding regulatory acceptance and privacy. Nonetheless, the Task Force supported further exploration of digital technologies through collaboration and data sharing, noting the need for standardization of digital readouts. They also concluded that while it may be premature to employ remote assessments for trials of novel experimental medications, remote studies of non-invasive, multi-domain approaches may be feasible at this time.

Abstract
The more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease face a future filled with progressive loss of their cognitive abilities ending with certain death (1). They will eventually require help in all aspects of daily living, and that help is provided by over 11 million unpaid caregivers (2). At this time, Alzheimer’s remains a clinical diagnosis and unfortunately, many individuals who would meet the diagnostic criteria are not diagnosed (3). The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) accelerated approval of aducanumab (Aduhelm™) as a treatment for Alzheimer’s makes early detection, accurate diagnosis and quality care even more critical, to ensure individuals receive the most benefit at the earliest point possible. Furthermore, the approval of this treatment opens up a new landscape in Alzheimer’s care that comes with many implications for effective public policy to enhance access to quality care.

Abstract
A diverse range of platforms has been established to increase the efficiency and speed of clinical trials for Alzheimer's disease (AD). These platforms enable parallel assessment of multiple therapeutics, treatment regimens, or participant groups; use uniform protocols and outcome measures; and may allow treatment arms to be added or dropped based on interim analyses of outcomes. The EU/US CTAD Task Force discussed the lessons learned from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer's Network Trials Unit (DIAN-TU) platform trial and the challenges addressed by other platform trials that have launched or are in the planning stages. The landscape of clinical trial platforms in the AD space includes those testing experimental therapies such as DIAN-TU, platforms designed to test multidomain interventions, and those designed to streamline trial recruitment by building trial-ready cohorts. The heterogeneity of the AD patient population, AD drugs, treatment regimens, and analytical methods complicates the design and execution of platform trials, yet Task Force members concluded that platform trials are essential to advance the search for effective AD treatments, including combination therapies.

Abstract
Understanding the differential roles of the pituitary gonadotropins Fsh and Lh in gonad maturation is crucial for a successful manipulation of the reproductive process in fish, and requires species-specific tools and appropriate active hormones. With the increasing availability of fish cDNAs coding for gonadotropin subunits, the production of recombinant hormones in heterologous systems has gradually substituted the approach of isolating native hormones. These recombinant hormones can be continually produced without depending on the fish as starting material and no cross-contamination with other pituitary glycoproteins is assured. Recombinant gonadotropins should be produced in eukaryotic cells, which have glycosylation capacity, but this post-translational modification varies greatly depending on the cell system, influencing hormone activity and stability. The production of recombinant gonadotropin beta-subunits to be used as antigens for antibody production has allowed the development of immunoassays for quantification of gonadotropins in some fish species. The administration in vivo of dimeric homologous recombinant gonadotropins has been used in basic studies and as a biotechnological approach to induce gametogenesis. In addition, gene-based therapies using somatic transfer of the gonadotropin genes have been tested as an alternative for hormone delivery in vivo. In summary, the use of homologous hormonal treatments can open new strategies in aquaculture to solve reproductive problems or develop out-of-season breeding programs.

Abstract
Rare earth elements (REE) present multiple applications in technological devices but also drawbacks (scarcity and water contaminant). The current study aims to valorise the banana wastes - banana rachis (BR), banana pseudo-stem (BPS) and banana peel (BP) as sustainable adsorbent materials for the recovery of REE (Nd3+, Eu3+, Y3+, Dy3+ and Tb3+). The adsorbent materials were characterized using analytical techniques such as: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray probe. The adsorption performance and mechanisms were studied by pH dependence, equilibrium isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics, ion-exchange and desorption evaluation. The results show good adsorption capacities for the three materials, highlighting BR that presents ∼100 mg/g for most of the REE. The adsorption process (100 mg REE/L) reaches the 60% uptake in 8 min and the equilibrium within 50 min. On the other hand, the thermodynamic study indicates that the adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic (ΔH° < 40 kJ/mol). The adsorption mechanism is based on the presence of carboxylic groups that induce electrostatic interactions and facilitate the surface nucleation of REE microcrystals coupled to an ion exchange process as well as the presence of other oxygen containing groups that establish weak intermolecular forces. The recovery of REE from the adsorbent (∼97%) is achieved using EDTA as desorbing solution. This research indicates that banana waste and particularly BR is a new and promising renewable bioresource to recover REE with high adsorption capacity and moderated processing cost.

Abstract
For the second time in the past 3 years, the EU-US CTAD Task Force addressed challenges related to designing clinical trials for agitation in dementia, which is one of the most disruptive aspects of the condition for both patients and caregivers. Six recommendations emerged from the Task Force meeting: 1 - Operationalizing agitation criteria established by the IPA; 2 - Combining clinician- and caregiver-derived outcomes as primary outcome measures; 3 - Using global ratings to define clinically meaningful effects and power studies; 4 - Improving the accuracy of caregiver reports by better training and education of caregivers; 5 - Employing emerging technologies to collect near real-time behavioral data; and 6 - Utilizing innovative trial designs and increasing the use of biomarkers to maximize the productivity of clinical trials for neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Abstract
This study evaluated the impact of continuous light (LL) within the photolabile period on advanced puberty in juvenile male European sea bass. The exposure to an LL regime for 1 month, from August 15 to September 15 (LLa/s), was compared to a constant simulated natural photoperiod (NP) and constant continuous light conditions year-round (LLy). Somatic growth, hormone plasma levels, rates of testicular maturation and spermiation, as well as the mRNA levels of some reproductive genes were analyzed. Our results demonstrated that both LLa/s and LLy treatments, which include LL exposure during the photolabile period, were highly effective in inhibiting the gametogenesis process that affects testicular development, and clearly reduced the early sexual maturation of males. Exposure to an LL photoperiod affected body weight and length of juvenile fish during early gametogenesis and throughout the first year of life. Interestingly, LL induced bi-weekly changes in some reproductive factors affecting Gnrh1 and Gnrh2 content in the brain, and also reduced pituitary fshβ expression and plasmatic levels of 11-KT, E2, Fsh throughout early gametogenesis. We suggest that low levels of E2 in early September in the LL groups, which would be concomitant with the reduced number of spermatogonial mitoses in these groups, might indicate a putative role for estrogens in spermatogonial proliferation during the early gonadal development of this species. Furthermore, a significant decrease in amh expression was observed, coinciding with low plasma levels of 11-KT under LL regimes, which is consistent with the idea that this growth factor may be crucial for the progress of spermatogenesis in male sea bass.

Abstract
The Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) is an endemic species of the tropical-temperate Atlantic Ocean with widespread distribution. Although this species has been the subject of a large number of studies throughout its range, it remains in the "data deficient" category of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Chemical pollution by persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has been listed as one of the major threats to this species, however, there is no information on a wide scale. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the contamination status of spotted dolphins on the metapopulation level as well as determine spatial and temporal variations in POP concentrations and bio-accumulation. A total of 115 blubber samples collected from a large part of the Atlantic basin were analysed for PCBs, DDTs, PBDEs, chlordanes, HCB and mirex. Although PCBs and DDTs were the predominant compounds in all areas, inter-location differences in POP concentrations were observed. Dolphins found at São Paulo, southeastern coast of Brazil, had the highest PCB concentrations (median: 10.5 μg/g lw) and Canary Islands dolphins had the highest DDT concentrations (median: 5.13 μg/g lw). Differences in PCB patterns among locations were also observed. Dolphins from the Azores and São Paulo demonstrated a similar pattern, with relatively highly contributions of tetra- (6.8 and 5.2%, respectively) and penta-CBs (25.6 and 23.8%, respectively) and lower contributions of hepta-CBs (20.8 and 23.5%, respectively) in comparison to other areas. Moreover, the sex of the animals and the year in which sampling or capture occurred exerted an important influence on the majority of the POPs analysed. Comparisons with toxicity thresholds available in the literature reveal that the São Paulo and Canary Island dolphins are the most vulnerable populations and should be considered in future conservation and management programs for the Atlantic spotted dolphin.

Abstract
The True’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon mirus, True 1913) is a poorly known member of the Ziphiidae family. Its distribution in the northern hemisphere is thought to be restricted to the temperate or warm temperate waters of the North Atlantic, while a few stranding records from the southern hemisphere suggest a wider and antitropical distribution, extending to waters from the Atlantic coast of Brazil to South Africa, Mozambique, Australia and the Tasman Sea coast of New Zealand. This paper (i) reports the first molecular confirmation of the occurrence of the True’s beaked whale at the southern limit of its distribution recorded in the northeast Atlantic: the Azores and Canary Islands (macaronesian ecoregion); (ii) describes a new colouration for this species using evidence from a whale with molecular species confirmation; and (iii) contributes to the sparse worldwide database of live sightings, including the first underwater video recording of this species and close images of a calf. Species identification was confirmed in two cases using mitochondrial DNA control region and cytochrome b gene markers: a subadult male True’s beaked whale that stranded in El Hierro, Canary Islands, in November 2012, and a subadult male found floating dead near Faial, the Azores, in July 2004. The whale that stranded in the Canary Islands had a clearly delimited white area on its head, extending posteriorly from the tip of the beak to cover the blowhole dorsally and the gular grooves ventrally. This colouration contrasts with previous descriptions for the species and it may be rare, but it exemplifies the variability of the colouration of True’s beaked whales in the North Atlantic, further confirmed here by live sightings data. The recording of several observations of this species in deep but relatively coastal waters off the Azores and the Canary Islands suggests that these archipelagos may be unique locations to study the behaviour of the enigmatic True’s beaked whale.

Abstract
The onset of puberty is characterized by activation of the brain-pituitary-gonad axis. However, the molecular and endocrine mechanism involved in the process of puberty and the influence of environmental conditions, such as photoperiod signalling, are not well understood in fish. In this study, 1-year-old male European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were exposed to photoperiod manipulation in combination with size-sorting. Two treatment groups, a puberty accelerating photoperiod (AP) group and a continuous light (LL) group, were studied from August to February. Our results indicate that AP and LL are able to entrain the rhythms of both kiss1 and gnrh2 mRNA levels in the brain, while kiss2 and gnrh1 mRNA expression does not seem to be directly affected by the photoperiod, at least during testicular growth. It is likely that AP and LL photoperiod regimes affected both plasma Fsh and 11-KT profiles, which might explain, respectively, the phase shift and reduction of testes maturation seen under these conditions. We therefore hypothesize that the unbalanced production of this androgen regulated by circulating Fsh might be limiting the stimulation of germ cell proliferation in European sea bass males. In summary, our study establishes that photoperiod modulates the expression of kiss1 and gnrh2 in the forebrain-midbrain, which may be involved in the translation of the light stimulus to activate the reproductive axis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the safety and efficacy of percutaneous placement of coated self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) in patients with biliary leaks. MATERIAL AND METHODS This ethics committee at our center approved this study. We retrospectively reviewed all coated SEMS placed between October 2008 and September 2015. We analyzed patient-related factors such as the primary underlying disease, prior hepatic procedures, and clinical outcome. We evaluated the location, the number and type of leak (anastomotic or non-anastomotic), and the characteristics of the interventional procedure (number of stents deployed, location of the stents, technical success, and primary functionality). We recorded the complications registered. RESULTS We studied 14 patients (11 men and 3 women). The mean follow-up period was 375.5 days (range 15-1920 days). Leaks were postsurgical in 12 patients. One patient developed an arteriobilioportal fistula. In another, the biliary leak occurred secondary to the rupture of the common bile duct after ERCP. A total of 23 coated SEMS were placed, including 21 Fluency® stents (Bard, Tempe, AZ, USA) and 2 Wallflex® stents (Boston Scientific, Galway, Republic of Ireland). The technical success of the procedure was considered total in 11 (78.6%) patients, partial in 2 (14.3%) patients, and null in 1 (7.2%) patient. The clinical outcome was good in 13 of the 14 patients. The mean period of primary functionality of the coated SEMS was 331 days (range 15-1920 days). No major complications were observed in 11 (78.6%) patients. CONCLUSIONS Percutaneous placement of coated SEMS for the treatment of benign biliary leaks is safe and efficacious, with a high rate of technical and clinical success and a moderate rate of complications.

Abstract
Kisspeptins are well known as mediators of the coordinated communication between the brain-pituitary axis and the gonads in many vertebrates. To test the hypothesis that gonadal steroids regulate kiss1 and kiss2 mRNA expression in European sea bass (a teleost fish), we examined the brains of gonad-intact (control) and castrated animals, as well as castrated males (GDX) and ovariectomized females (OVX) that received testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) replacement, respectively, during recrudescence. In GDX males, low expression of kiss1 mRNA is observed by in situ hybridization in the caudal hypothalamus (CH) and the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH), although hypothalamic changes in kiss1 mRNA levels were not statistically different among the groups, as revealed by real-time PCR. However, T strongly decreased kiss2 expression levels in the hypothalamus, which was documented in the MBH and the nucleus of the lateral recess (NRLd) in GDX T-treated sea bass males. Conversely, it appears that E2 evokes low kiss1 mRNA in the CH, while there were cells expressing kiss2 in the MBH and NRLd in these OVX females. These results demonstrate that kisspeptin neurons are presumably sensitive to the feedback actions of sex steroids in the sea bass, suggesting that the MBH represents a major site for sex steroid actions on kisspeptins in this species. Also, recent data provide evidence that both positive and negative actions occur in key factors involved in sea bass reproductive function, including changes in the expression of gnrh-1/gonadotropin, cyp19b, er and ar genes and sex steroid and gonadotropin plasma levels in this teleost fish.

Abstract
Previous works on European sea bass have determined that long-term exposure to restrictive feeding diets alters the rhythms of some reproductive/metabolic hormones, delaying maturation and increasing apoptosis during gametogenesis. However, exactly how these diets affect key genes and hormones on the brain-pituitary-gonad (BPG) axis to trigger puberty is still largely unknown. We may hypothesize that all these signals could be integrated, at least in part, by the kisspeptin system. In order to capture a glimpse of these regulatory mechanisms, kiss1 and kiss2 mRNA expression levels and those of their kiss receptors (kiss1r, kiss2r) were analyzed in different areas of the brain and in the pituitary of pubertal male sea bass during gametogenesis. Furthermore, other reproductive hormones and factors as well as the percentage of males showing full spermiation were also analyzed. Treated fish fed maintenance diets provided evidence of overexpression of the kisspeptin system in the main hypophysiotropic regions of the brain throughout the entire sexual cycle. Conversely, Gnrh1 and gonadotropin pituitary content and plasma sexual steroid levels were downregulated, except for Fsh levels, which were shown to increase during spermiation. Treated fish exhibited lower rates of spermiation as compared to control group and a delay in its accomplishment. These results demonstrate how the kisspeptin system and plasma Fsh levels are differentially affected by maintenance diets, causing a retardation, but not a full blockage of the reproductive process in the teleost fish European sea bass. This suggests that a hormonal adaptive strategy may be operating in order to preserve reproductive function in this species.

Abstract
In this study, we report the cloning of three transcripts for leptin receptor in the European sea bass, a marine teleost of economic interest. The two shortest variants, generated by different splice sites, encode all functional extracellular and intracellular domains but missed the transmembrane domain. The resulting proteins are therefore potential soluble binding proteins for leptin. The longest transcript (3605bp), termed sblepr, includes all the essential domains for binding and transduction of the signal. Thus, it is proposed as the ortholog for the human LEPR gene, the main responsible for leptin signaling. Phylogenetic analysis shows the sblepr clustered within the teleost leptin receptor group in 100% of the bootstrap replicates. The neuroanatomical localization of sblepr expressing cells has been assessed by in situ hybridization in brains of sea bass of both sexes during their first sexual maturation. At histological level, the distribution pattern of sblepr expressing cells in the brain shows no clear differences regarding sex or reproductive season. Transcripts of the sblepr have a widespread distribution throughout the forebrain and midbrain until the caudal portion of the hypothalamus. A high hybridization signal is detected in the telencephalon, preoptic area, medial basal and caudal hypothalamus and in the pituitary gland. In a more caudal region, sblepr expressing cells are identified in the longitudinal torus. The expression pattern observed for sblepr suggests that in sea bass, leptin is very likely to be involved in the control of food intake, energy reserves and reproduction.

Abstract
In populations of 1-year-old male European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), only large males are able to acquire for the first time a functional competence of their reproductive axis; in other words, to attain puberty. To examine the causes and mechanisms involved in the onset of puberty in this species, a size sorting sampling was carried out to obtain two experimental groups of small and large male fish exhibiting different growth rates. As expected, only large fish reached full spermiogenesis (stage V of testicular development) by the end of the experiment. Our study suggests that fish size is a permissive condition to ensure full effectiveness of the hormonal (Gnrh1, gonadotropins and sexual steroids) actions. Thus, though small fish had endocrine profiles similar to those of large fish, their amplitude was much lower, and was most likely the reason why functional competence of the reproductive axis was not achieved. Moreover, this work provides evidence of the involvement of kisspeptin and Gnrh1 systems in the onset of puberty in a marine teleost fish. It also indicates that very likely kisspeptin and Gnrh1 may regulate gonadotropins and sex steroids at specific stages of testicular development.

Abstract
Puberty is the process by which an immature animal acquires the ability to reproduce for the first time; its onset occurs soon after sexual differentiation and is characterized by the beginning of gametogenesis in both sexes. Here we present new insights on when and how the onset of puberty occurs in male European sea bass, its dependence on reaching a critical size, and how it can be controlled by photoperiod, revealing the existence of a photolabile period with important applications in aquaculture. Regarding size, apparently only European sea bass above a certain size threshold attain the ability to carry out gametogenesis during their first year of life, while their smaller counterparts fail to do so. This could imply that fish need to achieve an optimal threshold of hormone production, particularly from the kisspeptin/Gnrh/Gth systems, in order to initiate and conclude puberty. However, a long-term restricted feeding regime during the second year of life did not prevent the onset of puberty, thus suggesting that the fish are able to maintain the reproductive function, even at the expense of other functions. Finally, the study of daily hormonal rhythms under different photoperiod regimes revealed the equivalence between their core values and those of seasonal rhythms, in such a way that the daily rhythms could be considered as the functional units of the seasonal rhythms.

Abstract
Follicle stimulating hormone (Fsh) and luteinizing hormone (Lh) are central endocrine regulators of the gonadal function in vertebrates. They act through specific receptors located in certain cell types found in the gonads. In fish, the differential roles of these hormones are being progressively elucidated due to the development of suitable tools for their study. In European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), isolation of the genes coding for the gonadotropin subunits and receptors allowed in first instance to conduct expression studies. Later, to overcome the limitation of using native hormones, recombinant dimeric gonadotropins, which show different functional characteristics depending on the cell system and DNA construct, were generated. In addition, single gonadotropin beta-subunits have been produced and used as antigens for antibody production. This approach has allowed the development of detection methods for native gonadotropins, with European sea bass being one of the few species where both gonadotropins can be detected in their native form. By administering recombinant gonadotropins to gonad tissues in vitro, we were able to study their effects on steroidogenesis and intracellular pathways. Their administration in vivo has also been tested for use in basic studies and as a biotechnological approach for hormone therapy and assisted reproduction strategies. In addition to the production of recombinant hormones, gene-based therapies using somatic gene transfer have been offered as an alternative. This approach has been tested in sea bass for gonadotropin delivery in vivo. The hormones produced by the genes injected were functional and have allowed studies on the action of gonadotropins in spermatogenesis.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Aging produces body changes such as redistribution of fat and loss of muscle mass and strength, predisposing to fragility, functional impairment and disability. OBJECTIVE To analyze the relationship between body profile and physical and cognitive function by age in in ambulatory elderly women from the city of Córdoba. METHODS 178 healthy older women (OW) ≥60 years free living were evaluated attending centers of retirees and day homes in the city of Córdoba. We evaluated body profile from: skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI), relative body adiposity (RBA) -dual X-ray absorptiometry- and muscle strength (MS) -dynamometry-. Categories: normal/(N) sarcopenia/(SP), obesity/(OB), sarcopenic obesity/(SO); Physical function: with/without physical limitation (PL); cognitive function: with/without cognitive impairment (CI). INSTRUMENTS Lunar Prodigy Densitometer and Smedley dynamometer, Lawton and Brody and Minimental Examination of Folstein scales. RESULTS SO prevailed and increased with age, contrary to OB. Most of the OW did not PL or CI. Only 2.25% had low SMMI and 48.3% dynapenia. 76.97% had elevated RBA. The SP - obese or not - had greater PL and CI. CI frequency doubled to PL (15.17% versus 6.74%). We found negative correlations and significant associations between age and MS (r= -0.279; p=0.0001), physical function (r=-0.164; p=0.0283) and cognitive function (r=-0.028; p=0.0002). CONCLUSIONS In this group of healthy OW the dynapenia was responsible for the observed SP, not low SMMI. The OW with SP had more PL and CI, and increased with age.

Abstract
In fish, the onset of puberty, the transition from juvenile to sexually reproductive adult animals, is triggered by the activation of pituitary gonadotropin secretion and its timing is influenced by external and internal factors that include the growth/adiposity status of the animal. Kisspeptins have been implicated in the activation of puberty but peripheral signals coming from the immature gonad or associated to the metabolic/nutritional status are also thought to be involved. Therefore we hypothesize the importance of the galinergic system in the brain and testis of pre-pubertal male sea bass as a candidate to translate the signals leading to activation of testicular maturation. Here, the transcripts for four galanin receptors (GALR), named GALR1a, 1b, 2a and 2b, were isolated from European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the previously reported duplication of GALR1 in teleost fish, and unravelled the duplication of GALR2 in teleost fish and in some tetrapod species. Comparison with human showed that the key amino acids involved in ligand binding are present in the corresponding GALR1 and GALR2 orthologs. Transcripts for all four receptors are expressed in brain and testes of adult fish with GALR1a and GALR1b abundant in testes and hardly detected in ovaries. In order to investigate whether GALR1 dimorphic expression was dependent on steroid context we evaluated the effect of 11-ketotestosterone and 17β-estradiol treatments on the receptor expression in brain and testes of pre-pubertal males. Interestingly, steroid treatments had no effect on the expression of GALRs in the brain while in the testes, GALR1a and GALR1b were significantly up regulated by 11KT. Altogether, these results support a role for the galaninergic system, in particular the GALR1 paralog, in fish reproductive function.

Abstract
The sea bass follicle-stimulating hormone 5' flanking region (sbFSHβ 5' FR) was cloned and characterized in order to study the molecular mechanisms underlying transcriptional regulation of the sbFSHβ gene. Analysis of the ~3.5 kb of this region revealed the presence of several putative cis-acting elements, including steroid hormone response elements, cAMP response elements, pituitary-specific transcription factor response elements, activator protein-1 response elements and TATA sequence. Deleted constructs containing ~3.5 kb of the sbFSHβ 5' FR fused to a luciferase reporter gene were transiently transfected into human embryonic kidney (HEK 293) and mouse mature gonadotrope (LβT2) cell lines. The sbFSHβ 5' FR was efficiently expressed under basal conditions in LβT2 but not in HEK 293, pointing to both positive and negative regulatory elements. In order to elucidate the estrogen-mediated sbFSHβ transcriptional activity, in vitro treatments with 17β-estradiol were carried out on primary cultures of pituitary cells and LβT2 cells transiently expressing luciferase under the control of sbFSHβ 5' FR. Overall, these results demonstrate that 17β-estradiol inhibits sbFSHβ gene expression directly at the level of the pituitary. However, it was also shown that estrogen did not induce changes of the sbFSH promoter-directed luciferase activity, suggesting that sbFSHβ 5'FR (~3.5 kb) activity is cell type dependent and its estrogen regulation could require cis-acting elements located upstream of the promoter region, which is characterized in this article.

Abstract
Puberty represents the transition from an immature to a mature reproductive stage. The mechanisms underlying the onset of normal or precocious puberty have not yet been elucidated. With the goal of gaining an understanding of early events that occur in the testes of precocious animals during this process, a hemigonadectomy was performed on male juvenile sea bass and expression levels of candidate mRNAs were determined through quantitative real-time RT-PCR. For this purpose, the gonadal soma-derived factors gsdf1 and gsdf2, the nuclear receptor 5 subfamily members nr5a1a (ff1b), nr5a1b (ff1d), nr5a2 (ff1a) and nr5a5 (ff1c) and the proliferating cell nuclear antigen or pcna, genes with a putative role in the beginning of spermatogenesis, were isolated and cloned. Hemigonadectomy proved to be a suitable strategy for the study of gonadal stages prior to the appearance of histological differences between precocious and non-precocious fish, as it allowed the subsequent classification of these gonads. The upregulation of the gene encoding the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (Star) in precocious testes indicates that sex steroids could play a role in the onset of spermatogenesis in sea bass. In contrast, the downregulation observed in ff1b expression indicates that this initial surge in star expression is not the result of Ff1b transactivation, suggesting an alternative pathway for this transcriptional activation. Finally, a decrease in gsdf1 expression in precocious animals suggests that this gene may play a role in the onset of puberty, while its correlation with ff1b expression points to gsdf1 as a putative target for Ff1b-mediated transactivation.

Abstract
Visual species identification of cetacean strandings is difficult, especially when dead specimens are degraded and/or species are morphologically similar. The two recognised pilot whale species (Globicephala melas and Globicephala macrorhynchus) are sympatric in the North Atlantic Ocean. These species are very similar in external appearance and their morphometric characteristics partially overlap; thus visual identification is not always reliable. Genetic species identification ensures correct identification of specimens. Here we have employed one mitochondrial (D-Loop region) and eight nuclear loci (microsatellites) as genetic markers to identify six stranded pilot whales found in Galicia (Northwest Spain), one of them of ambiguous phenotype. DNA analyses yielded positive amplification of all loci and enabled species identification. Nuclear microsatellite DNA genotypes revealed mixed ancestry for one individual, identified as a post-F1 interspecific hybrid employing two different Bayesian methods. From the mitochondrial sequence the maternal species was Globicephala melas. This is the first hybrid documented between Globicephala melas and G. macrorhynchus, and the first post-F1 hybrid genetically identified between cetaceans, revealing interspecific genetic introgression in marine mammals. We propose to add nuclear loci to genetic databases for cetacean species identification in order to detect hybrid individuals.

Abstract
This study, conducted in the brain of a perciform fish, the European sea bass, aimed at raising antibodies against the precursor of the kisspeptins in order to map the kiss systems and to correlate the expression of kisspeptins, kiss1 and kiss2, with that of kisspeptin receptors (kiss-R1 and kiss-R2). Specific antibodies could be raised against the preprokiss2, but not the preoprokiss1. The data indicate that kiss2 neurons are mainly located in the hypothalamus and project widely to the subpallium and pallium, the preoptic region, the thalamus, the pretectal area, the optic tectum, the torus semicircularis, the mediobasal medial and caudal hypothalamus, and the neurohypophysis. These results were compared to the expression of kiss-R1 and kiss-R2 messengers, indicating a very good correlation between the wide distribution of Kiss2-positive fibers and that of kiss-R2 expressing cells. The expression of kiss-R1 messengers was more limited to the habenula, the ventral telencephalon and the proximal pars distalis of the pituitary. Attempts to characterize the phenotype of the numerous cells expressing kiss-R2 showed that neurons expressing tyrosine hydroxylase, neuropeptide Y and neuronal nitric oxide synthase are targets for kisspeptins, while GnRH1 neurons did not appear to express kiss-R1 or kiss-R2 messengers. In addition, a striking result was that all somatostatin-positive neurons expressed-kissR2. These data show that kisspeptins are likely to regulate a wide range of neuronal systems in the brain of teleosts.

This study examines the relative mRNA expression profiles of the duplicate kisspeptin system (kiss1, kiss2, gpr54-1b, and gpr54-2b) in the hypothalamus and pituitary of adult male and female sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) during different gonadal stages using qRT-PCR. We also report the changes in the expression levels of gnrh-1, gnrhr-II-1a, fshβ, and lhβ and the relationships observed between both kisspeptin and GnRH systems. Our data show clear sex differences in the dynamics of kisspeptin and kisspeptin receptor gene expression in the hypothalamus of sea bass during gonadal development. Overall, all four kisspeptin system genes increased either before or during the advanced stages of oogenesis and declined during atresia, exhibiting profiles that are identical to those observed for gnrhr-II-1a, fshβ, lhβ, and the gonadosomatic index (GSI). While the situation was not as clear in males, the high kiss2 expression levels observed in the hypothalamus during mid recrudescence suggest that it might be playing a role in the neuroendocrine signaling that regulates germ cell proliferation at the testicular level. In this sense, the proposed role attributed to kisspeptins as key factors in the onset of reproduction in fish receives an additional support from the data obtained in the present work. Nevertheless, further research is required to clarify their precise role in sea bass.

Abstract
While we may not be able to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the near future, several drugs presently in trials have shown promise as possible modifiers of disease progression. However, we may not be able to demonstrate efficacy due to issues of recruitment, retention, site-to-site variability, and other methodological issues. It is thus incumbent on the scientific community to find solutions to these problems, particularly as the field moves toward preventing illness or treating the disease in its prodromal stages, where these methodological issues will become even more critical. We need to better understand why participants agree or refuse to enter drug trials, and why both primary care physicians and Alzheimer's specialists agree or refuse to involve their patients. We also need to quantify the impact of requiring imaging studies, extensive questionnaires, cognitive testing, and lumbar punctures on recruitment and retention. With these concerns in mind, an international task force meeting of experts from academia and industry in the United States, European Union, and Japan in San Diego, California on November 2, 2011 to focus on recruitment, retention and other methodological issues related to clinical trials for AD. Based on the recommendations of this Task force meeting, this Perspectives article critically reflects on the most critical and timely methodological issues related to recruitment and retention in prevention and therapeutic trials in AD, which are paralleled by a paradigm shift in the diagnostic conceptualization of this disease, as reflected by recently new proposed diagnostic criteria involving preclinical stages of the disease.

Abstract
Since the late 1980s, gonadotropins have been isolated and characterized in several fish species, but specific immunoassays for the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) have only been developed for a few. The present study reports the development and use of a specific and homologous competitive ELISA for measuring FSH in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) using a recombinant FSH and its specific antiserum. Recombinant European sea bass FSHβ and FSH heterodimer were produced in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris and a baculovirus expression system, respectively. Specific polyclonal antibodies, generated by rabbit immunization against recombinant FSHβ, were used at a final dilution of 1:8000. Recombinant FSH heterodimer was used to generate a standard curve and for coating of microplates (166 μg/ml). The sensitivity of the assay was 0.5 ng/ml [B(0)-2SD], and the intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 2.12% (n=10) and 5.44% (n=16) (B(i)/B(0) ∼45%), respectively. A high degree of parallelism was observed between the standard curve and serially diluted plasma and pituitary samples of European sea bass. The ELISA developed was used to study the plasma FSH profiles of mature males and females during the reproductive cycle, and those of immature juvenile males under different light regimes. The analysis showed that FSH increased significantly during the intermediate stages of spermatogenesis and during vitellogenesis. Analyses in immature juvenile males showed that the continuous light photoperiod significantly reduced plasma FSH levels, and consequently, testicular growth and precocious puberty. In conclusion, the immunoassay developed has proven to be sensitive, specific and accurate for measuring European sea bass FSH, and it represents a valuable tool for future studies on the reproductive endocrinology of this species.

Abstract
Kisspeptins, the peptide products of the Kiss1 gene, were initially identified in mammals as ligands of the G protein-coupled receptor 54 (GPR54; also termed Kiss1R) with ability to suppress tumor metastasis. In late 2003, the indispensable role of kisspeptins in the control of reproductive function was disclosed by the seminal observations that humans and mice carrying inactivating mutations of GPR54 displayed hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Since then, numerous experimental studies, conducted initially in several mammalian species, have substantiated the roles of kisspeptins as essential players in the physiologic regulation of key aspects of reproductive maturation and function, including the timing of puberty onset, the dynamic control of gonadotropin secretion via stimulation of GnRH neurons, the transmission of the negative and positive feedback effects of sex steroids, the metabolic regulation of fertility and the control of reproductive function by environmental (photoperiodic) cues. Notably, while studies about kisspeptins in non-mammals appeared initially to lag behind, significant efforts have been devoted recently to define the genomic organization and functional characteristics of kiss/kisspeptins and gpr54 in different non-mammalian species, including fish, reptiles and amphibians. These analyses, which will be comprehensively revised herein, have not only substantiated the conserved, essential roles of kisspeptins in the control of reproduction, but have also disclosed intriguing evolutionary aspects of kisspeptins and their receptors. Such comparative approaches will be instrumental to fuel further studies on the molecular regulation and physiological roles of kisspeptins, thus helping to unveil the complex biology of this system as indispensable regulator of the reproductive axis in a wide diversity of animal species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The European Panel on the Appropriateness of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (EPAGE I) criteria were recently updated (EPAGE II), but no prospective studies have used these criteria in clinical practice. The aim of the current study was to validate the EPAGE II criteria in an open-access endoscopy unit. PATIENTS AND METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted in an open-access endoscopy unit at a tertiary care referral center. Consecutive outpatients (n = 1004; mean age 58.9 ± 13.1 years; 45 % men) were referred for diagnostic colonoscopy between September 2009 and February 2010. The appropriateness of colonoscopy was assessed based on EPAGE II criteria, and the relationship between appropriateness and both referral doctor and detection of significant lesions was examined. The effectiveness of EPAGE II criteria in assessing appropriateness was measured by means of sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for detecting significant lesions. RESULTS Colonoscopic cecal intubation was achieved in 956 patients (95.2 %). Most referral doctors were gastroenterologists (58.0 %) and the most common indication was colorectal cancer (CRC) screening (35.2 %). EPAGE II criteria were applicable in 968 patients (96.4 %); of these patients, the indication was appropriate in 778 (80.4 %), inappropriate in 102 (10.5 %), and uncertain in 88 (9.1 %). Patients with appropriate or uncertain indications based on EPAGE II criteria had more relevant endoscopic findings than those with inappropriate indications (38.8 % vs. 24.5 %; OR 1.95, 95 %CI 1.22 - 3.13; P < 0.005). Sensitivity and negative predictive value of EPAGE II criteria for detecting significant lesions were 93.1 % (95 %CI 90 % - 96 %) and 75.5 % (95 %CI 67 % - 84 %), respectively, whereas for advanced neoplastic lesions these values were 98.0 % (95 %CI 95 % - 100 %) and 98.0 % (95 % CI 95 % - 100 %), respectively. Adherence to EPAGE II recommendations was an independent predictor of finding a significant lesion (OR 1.93, 95 %CI 1.20 - 3.11; P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS EPAGE II is a simple, valid score for detecting inappropriate colonoscopies in clinical practice.

Abstract
In the latero-anterior hypothalamus (LAH) increased glutamate and vasopressin (AVP) activity facilitate anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS)-induced offensive aggression. In addition, adolescent AAS treatment increases the strength of glutamate-mediated connections between the LAH and the brain nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST). The current set of studies used male Syrian hamsters exposed to AAS during adolescence to examine whether increased glutamate-mediated stimulation of the BNST is dependent on LAH-AVP signaling and whether this neural pathway modulates adolescent AAS-induced offensive aggression. In the first set of AAS-treated animals offensive aggression was measured following blockade of glutamate activity within the BNST using NBQX. Then, in a second group of AAS-treated animals aggression levels were examined following simultaneous blockade of LAH-AVP activity using Manning compound and stimulation of BNST glutamate using AMPA. Lastly, the number of AVP fibers in apposition to glutamate cells was examined in AAS and control animals, using double-label immunofluorescence. The results showed that administration of NBQX into the BNST dose-dependently reduced aggressive behavior in AAS-treated animals. Further, the current results replicated previous findings showing that blockade of LAH-AVP significantly reduces aggressive behavior in AAS-treated animals. In these animals stimulation of BNST-AMPA receptors had a linear effect on aggression, where the smallest dose exacerbated the inhibitory effect of the V1a antagonist, the medium dose had no effect and the highest dose recuperated aggression to control levels. Finally when compared with control animals, AAS treatment produced a significant increase in the number of AVP fibers in apposition to LAH-glutamate cells. Overall, these results identify the BNST as a key brain region involved in aggression control and provide strong evidence suggesting that AVPergic-mediated stimulation of BNST-glutamate is a possible mechanism that facilitates aggression expression in adolescent AAS-treated animals.

Abstract
Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) activity exhibits monogenic co-dominant inheritance, with ethnic differences in the frequency of occurrence of variant alleles. With conventional thiopurine doses, homozygous TPMT-deficient patients (~1 in 178 to 1 in 3,736 individuals with two nonfunctional TPMT alleles) experience severe myelosuppression, 30-60% of individuals who are heterozygotes (~3-14% of the population) show moderate toxicity, and homozygous wild-type individuals (~86-97% of the population) show lower active thioguanine nucleolides and less myelosuppression. We provide dosing recommendations (updates at http://www.pharmgkb.org) for azathioprine, mercaptopurine (MP), and thioguanine based on TPMT genotype.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A large number of promising candidate disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer disease (AD) continue to advance into phase II and phase III testing. However, most completed trials have failed to demonstrate efficacy, and there is growing concern that methodologic difficulties may contribute to these clinical trial failures. The optimal time to intervene with such treatments is probably in the years prior to the onset of dementia, before the neuropathology has progressed to the advanced stage corresponding to clinical dementia. METHOD An international task force of individuals from academia, industry, nonprofit foundations, and regulatory agencies was convened to discuss optimal trial design in early (predementia) AD. RESULTS General consensus was reached on key principles involving the scope of the AD diagnosis, the selection of subjects for trials, outcome measures, and analytical methods. CONCLUSION A consensus has been achieved in support of the testing of candidate treatments in the early (predementia) AD population.

Abstract
The present study reports on the daily and seasonal variations in plasma melatonin concentration, and also in optic tectum and hypothalamus melatonin binding sites, in male European sea bass maintained under natural photoperiod (NP) or continuous light (LL) from early stages of development. Samples were collected on a 24-h cycle, at four physiological phases of their first annual reproductive cycle, i.e., pre-spermatogenesis, spermatogenesis, spermiation and post-spermiation. Under NP, (1) plasma melatonin levels were higher at night than during the day regardless of the year period, and the duration of the signal matched the duration of the dark phase; (2) daily variations in Kd and Bmax were found in the optic tectum, but only during spermiation, with the acrophase being 180° out of phase with the plasma melatonin variations; and (3) significant seasonal Kd and Bmax changes were seen in the hypothalamus. Under LL, (1) plasma melatonin showed no elevation during the subjective night; and (2) Kd and Bmax exhibited seasonal variations in the hypothalamus. These results led to the conclusion that long-term exposure to LL affected both plasma melatonin and receptor oscillations; particularly, LL disrupted the receptor density circadian oscillation found in the optic tectum during spermiation under NP. This oscillation appears to be important for sea bass to pursue gametogenesis until full spermiation. The persistence of both daily and seasonal variation of receptor affinity and density in the hypothalamus under LL indicates that these variations are controlled by internal circadian and circannual clocks that do not involve melatonin.

Abstract
Melatonin is a much conserved feature in vertebrates that plays a central role in the entrainment of daily and annual physiological rhythms. Investigations aiming at understanding how melatonin mediates the effects of photoperiod on crucial functions and behaviors have been very active in the last decades, particularly in mammals. In fish a clear-cut picture is still missing. Here we review the available data on (i) the sites of melatonin production in fish, (ii) the mechanisms that control its daily and annual rhythms of production and (iii) the characterization of its different receptor subtypes, their location and regulation. The in vivo and in vitro data on melatonin effects on crucial neuroendocrine regulations, including reproduction, growth, feeding and behavioral responses, are also reviewed. Finally we discuss how manipulation of the photic cues impact on fish circannual clock and annual cycle of reproduction, and how this can be used for aquaculture purposes.

Abstract
Puberty comprises the transition from an immature juvenile to a mature adult state of the reproductive system, i.e. the individual becomes capable of reproducing sexually for the first time, which implies functional competence of the brain-pituitary-gonad (BPG) axis. Early puberty is a major problem in many farmed fish species due to negative effects on growth performance, flesh composition, external appearance, behaviour, health, welfare and survival, as well as possible genetic impact on wild populations. Late puberty can also be a problem for broodstock management in some species, while some species completely fail to enter puberty under farming conditions. Age and size at puberty varies between and within species and strains, and are modulated by genetic and environmental factors. Puberty onset is controlled by activation of the BPG axis, and a range of internal and external factors are hypothesised to stimulate and/or modulate this activation such as growth, adiposity, feed intake, photoperiod, temperature and social factors. For example, there is a positive correlation between rapid growth and early puberty in fish. Age at puberty can be controlled by selective breeding or control of photoperiod, feeding or temperature. Monosex stocks can exploit sex dimorphic growth patterns and sterility can be achieved by triploidisation. However, all these techniques have limitations under commercial farming conditions. Further knowledge is needed on both basic and applied aspects of puberty control to refine existing methods and to develop new methods that are efficient in terms of production and acceptable in terms of fish welfare and sustainability.

Abstract
This paper reports on an evaluation of growth, gonadal development and reproductive endocrinology of older triploid (3n) European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax in comparison with their diploid (2n) counterparts throughout their fifth and seventh annual cycle of life. While older triploids retained impaired reproductive endocrinology, a sexually related dimorphic growth was observed with 3n females attaining the largest sizes. Comparisons of some body indexes showed that 3n females had a significantly lower hepato-somatic index (I(H)) than 2n females but a significantly higher viscero-somatic index (I(F)). In contrast, both male and female triploids showed significantly lower gonado-somatic index (I(G)) than diploids. Accordingly, diploids produced mature gametes but triploids did not, demonstrating that despite the longer time given to triploids for gonadal development, they could not reproduce. Furthermore, older triploids had lower levels of plasma sex steroids (testosterone, T; 11-ketotestosterone, 11-KT and oestradiol-17beta, E(2)) and luteinizing hormone (LH) than their 2n counterparts with 3n females showing drastic effects of triploidization on their reproductive endocrinology. Vitellogenin (VTG) was undetectable in 3n females. Gonadal content of steroid hormones and Sparus aurata-type gonadotropin-releasing hormone (sbGnRH) in the brain and pituitary were also lower in triploids compared with diploids. These results suggest that older 3n D. labrax retain functional sterility in both sexes, and 3n females might reach larger sizes than 3n males and their 2n counterparts in this species.

Abstract
Kisspeptins, the products of KiSS-1 gene, have recently emerged as fundamental regulators of reproductive function in different mammalian and, presumably, non-mammalian species. To date, a single form of KiSS-1 has been described in mammals, and recently, in several fish species and Xenopus. We report herein the cloning and characterization of two distinct KiSS-like genes, namely, KiSS-1 and KiSS-2, in the teleost sea bass. While KiSS-1 encodes a peptide identical to rodent kisspeptin-10, the predicted KiSS-2 decapeptide diverges at 4 amino acids (FNFNPFGLRF). Genome database searches showed that both genes are present in non-placental vertebrate genomes. Indeed, phylogenetic and genome mapping analyses suggest that KiSS-1 and KiSS-2 are paralogous genes that originated by duplication of an ancestral gene, although KiSS-2 is lost in placental mammals. KiSS-1 and KiSS-2 mRNAs are present in brain and gonads of sea bass, medaka and zebrafish. Comparative functional studies demonstrated that KiSS-2 decapeptide was significantly more potent than KiSS-1 peptide in inducing LH and FSH secretion in sea bass. In contrast, KiSS-2 decapeptide only weakly elicited LH secretion in rats, whereas KiSS-1 peptide was maximally effective. Our data are the first to provide conclusive evidence for the existence of a second KiSS gene, KiSS-2, in non-placental vertebrates, whose product is likely to play a dominant stimulatory role in the regulation of the gonadotropic axis at least in teleosts.

Abstract
The endocrine regulation of gametogenesis, and particularly the roles of gonadotropins, is still poorly understood in teleost fish. This study aimed to investigate transcript levels of both gonadotropin receptors (FSHR and LHR) during an entire reproductive cycle in male and female sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). To have a more comprehensive understanding of how different key factors interact to control sea bass gonadal function, changes in the transcript abundance of two important steroidogenic enzymes, P450 11beta-hydroxylase (CYP11B1) and P450 aromatase (CYP19A1), and the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), were also studied. These expression profiles were analysed in relation to changes in the plasma levels of important reproductive hormones and histological data. Expression of the FSHR was connected with early stages of gonadal development, but also with the spermiation/maturation-ovulation periods. The expression profile of the LHR seen in both sexes supports the involvement of LH in the regulation of the final stages of gamete maturation and spermiation/ovulation. In both sexes StAR expression was strongly correlated with LHR expression. In females high magnitude increments of StAR expression levels were observed during the maturation-ovulation stage. In males, gonadotropin receptors and CYP11B1 mRNA levels were found to be correlated. In females, the expression profiles of FSHR and CYP19A1 and the changes in plasma estradiol (E2) indicate that the follicular production of E2 could be under control of FSH through the regulation of aromatase expression. This study supports the idea that FSH and LH may have different roles in the control of sea bass gonadal function.
