Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the diagnostic tests used and their comparative performance in dogs diagnosed with sinonasal aspergillosis in the United Kingdom. A secondary objective was to describe the signalment, clinical findings and common clinicopathologic abnormalities in sinonasal aspergillosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A multi-centre retrospective survey was performed involving 23 referral centres in the United Kingdom to identify dogs diagnosed with sinonasal aspergillosis from January 2011 to December 2021. Dogs were included if fungal plaques were seen during rhinoscopy or if ancillary testing (via histopathology, culture, cytology, serology or PCR) was positive and other differential diagnoses were excluded. RESULTS A total of 662 cases were entered into the database across the 23 referral centres. Four hundred and seventy-five cases met the study inclusion criteria. Of these, 419 dogs had fungal plaques and compatible clinical signs. Fungal plaques were not seen in 56 dogs with turbinate destruction that had compatible clinical signs and a positive ancillary test result. Ancillary diagnostics were performed in 312 of 419 (74%) dogs with observed fungal plaques permitting calculation of sensitivity of cytology as 67%, fungal culture 59%, histopathology 47% and PCR 71%. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The sensitivities of ancillary diagnostics in this study were lower than previously reported challenging the clinical utility of such tests in sinonasal aspergillosis. Treatment and management decisions should be based on a combination of diagnostics including imaging findings, visual inspection, and ancillary testing, rather than ancillary tests alone.

Abstract
A method for the quantitative determination of epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) in foods is described. The procedure involves addition of a diepoxidized fatty acid ester internal standard, followed by lipid extraction from the food and transmethylation under basic conditions. Without further cleanup, the methylated fatty acid epoxides are derivatized to form 1,3-dioxolanes, which are then determined by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring. A detection limit of 2.0 mg/kg of epoxidized soybean oil in foods and a relative standard deviation of 7% have been achieved routinely. The method has been applied successfully to the analysis of cheeses, sandwiches, cakes, and microwave-cooked meals which have been contaminated with ESBO by migration from PVC film.

Thirteen laboratories In 7 different countries participated in a collaborative trial to evaluate an Immunoaffinity column cleanup procedure with quantitation by fluorescence liquid chromatography (post-column derivatization) for the determination of aflatoxins In peanut butters. Participants were sent 10 randomly numbered samples of roasted peanut butter for analysis (5 pairs of undisclosed duplicates). Two of the pairs were "blank" peanut butters to which aflatoxin standards had been added; these "spiked" samples were used for recovery purposes. The other 3 pairs of samples were a nominal "blank" and 2 naturally contaminated peanut butters. A full statistical presentation of the results is given. Coefficients of variation (CVs) for the total aflatoxin determinations for mean levels of 4,15, and 38 µ/kg were between 32 and 44% for the blank and 2 trial samples. Recovery levels for the 2 spiked samples were 51-67%, with aflatoxin B1 recovery of 60%. Relative standard deviations for method repeatability (RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDR) for the 3 trial samples were 15-26% and 33-45%, respectively.

A liquid chromatographic method for determining low aflatoxin M1 concentrations in milk was evaluated in an International Dairy Federation (IDF) interlaboratory study. The study involved 16 participants from 11 countries. The method, chosen after a comparison of several methods by a preparatory group, uses an immunoaffinity column for cleanup. As the sample passes through the column, antibodies selectively bind with aflatoxin M1 (antigen) present and form an antibody-antigen complex. All other components of the sample matrix are washed off the column with water. Then, aflatoxin M1 is eluted from the column with acetonitrile, which is collected. Final determination is carried out by reversed-phase liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Over the tested range (80-600 ng aflatoxin M1/kg milk powder), an RSDR ranging from 11 to 23% was obtained by analyzing 24 samples (blind duplicates), 2 samples of which were blanks.

Eighteen laboratories participated in a collaborative study on the determination of clopidol residues in chicken muscle tissues by liquid chromatography. Of these, results from 16 laboratories which rigorously followed the method were subjected to statistical analysis. The method performance was assessed by all participants using 14 samples of chicken muscle fortified at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 mg/kg. In addition, 9 participants each reported results for 6 clopidol-incurred samples in chicken muscle. Test portions were extracted with acetonitrile, and the extracts were purified with alumina and anion exchange resin solid-phase extraction cartridges in sequence. Clopidol was separated by reversed-phase liquid chromatography and quantified at 270 nm. Average recoveries ranged from 81.8 to 85.4%, reproducibility relative standard deviation (RSDR) ranged from 11.9 to 22.6%, and repeatability relative standard deviation (RSDr) ranged from 9.9 to 15.1%. For clopidol-incurred samples at concentrations of 0.100–0.687 mg/kg, the mean determination value range was 0.099–0.659 mg/kg; RSDR was 12.6–19.8%, RSDr was 3.1–8.5%; and HORRAT values were 0.7–1.1. The accuracy and precision of the method are in conformity with the requirements specified by AOAC INTERNATIONAL. The method was adopted Official First Action in April 2003.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health economic evaluations inform healthcare resource allocation decisions for treatment options for obesity including bariatric/metabolic surgery. As an important advance on existing systematic reviews, we aimed to capture, summarize and synthesize a diverse range of economic evaluations on bariatric surgery. METHODS Studies were identified by electronic screening of all major biomedical/economic databases. Studies included if they reported any quantified health economic cost and/or consequence with a measure of effect for any type of bariatric surgery from 1995 to September 2015. Study screening, data extraction and synthesis followed international guidelines for systematic reviews. RESULTS Six thousand one hundred eighty-seven studies were initially identified. After two levels of screening, 77 studies representing 17 countries (56% USA) were included. Despite study heterogeneity, common themes emerged, and important gaps were identified. Most studies adopted the healthcare system/third-party payer perspective; reported costs were generally healthcare resource use (inpatient/shorter-term outpatient). Out-of-pocket costs to individuals, family members (travel time, caregiving) and indirect costs due to lost productivity were largely ignored. Costs due to reoperations/complications were not included in one-third of studies. Body-contouring surgery included in only 14%. One study evaluated long-term waitlisted patients. Surgery was cost-effective/cost-saving for severely obese with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Study quality was inconsistent. DISCUSSION There is a need for studies that assume a broader societal perspective (including out-of-pocket costs, costs to family and productivity losses) and longer-term costs (capture reoperations/complications, waiting, body contouring), and consequences (health-related quality-of-life). Full economic evaluation underpinned by reporting standards should inform prioritization of patients (e.g. type 2 diabetes mellitus with body mass index 30 to 34.9 kg/m(2) or long-term waitlisted) for surgery. © 2016 World Obesity.

Abstract
Human exposure to emerging contaminants by indirect routes is of increasing interest. This study assessed the contamination of food by chemicals used in human pharmaceuticals (HPs), veterinary medicines (VMs), and personal care products (PCPs). A prioritization study was undertaken to identify the chemicals and food-producing scenarios most likely to result in contamination of food. Around 400 samples of mushrooms, vegetables, aquaculture products, and animal tissues were collected from sites in the United Kingdom, along with aquaculture products imported from Southeast Asia. A number of multianalyte methods were developed and validated for the analysis of the prioritized compounds in these samples. The analysis of all sample-method combinations required approximately 18000 determinations. Around 325 individual residues, including parabens, musk compounds, and antibiotics, were detected in 118 individual samples, but mostly at low nanograms per gram concentrations. Results suggest that the limited contamination of target chemicals occurred in the realistic food-producing scenarios investigated.

Abstract
Waste milk samples from 103 farms in England and Wales were examined for the presence of β-lactam antibiotics and ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae. Approximately 10 months after the initial sampling, further waste milk, environmental and faecal samples from farms shown to be positive for CTX-M Escherichia coli were investigated further. Isolates with an ESBL phenotype were tested by PCR for the presence of blaCTX-M, blaOXA, blaSHV and blaTEM genes. Isolates positive for blaCTX-M were sequenced to determine CTX-M type. Representative isolates were further examined by PFGE, plasmid replicon typing and serotyping. Of particular interest, 21.4% of waste milk samples contained residues of the cephalosporin cefquinome, which was significantly associated with CTX-M bacteria. Such bacteria occurred in 5.8% of the waste milk samples (including 3.9% CTX-M E. coli). CTX-M types identified were 1, 14, 14b and 15, but none of the E. coli were serotype O25, the serotype of the human pandemic strain.

Abstract
Juvenile Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) were exposed to trifluralin at 0.1 and 0.01 mg L(-1) for 72 h under controlled conditions. Samples of shrimp and tank water were collected at intervals up to 48 days after exposure. Analysis of the shrimp tissues by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-qToF-MS) in combination with profiling and metabolite identification software (Agilent MET-ID and Mass Profiler Professional) detected the presence of parent trifluralin together with two main transformation products (TPs), 2-ethyl-7-nitro-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzimidazole (TP1) and 2-amino-6-nitro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)propylamine (TP2). The highest concentration of trifluralin, determined by GC-MS, was 120 μg kg(-1) at 0 day withdrawal. Residues of trifluralin (CCα = 0.25 μg kg(-1), CCβ = 0.42 μg kg(-1)) were detectable for up to 7 days after exposure. Similarly, the highest concentrations of TP1 and TP 2, determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), were 14 and 18 μg kg(-1), respectively. Residues of TP1 (CCα = 0.05 μg kg(-1), CCβ = 0.09 μg kg(-1)) and TP2 (CCα = 0.1 μg kg(-1), CCβ = 0.17 μg kg(-1)) were detectable for up to 4 and 24 withdrawal days, respectively.

Abstract
There is current debate within the EU, and internationally, on how withdrawal periods and maximum residue limits (MRLs) may be set for honey production. Whilst comprehensive EU guidelines exist for calculating the withdrawal times of veterinary medicines in most food-producing species, the analytical variables to be studied for bees/honey are not well defined. The objective of this study was therefore to investigate and understand the factors, for example sampling variability, that is important in the development of a harmonized protocol that can be used to generate the robust scientific data necessary to assist risk assessors in proposing MRLs for honey. Ten bee colonies were treated in the spring with a model compound (ciprofloxacin). One hive was used to study intra-hive variation in residue concentrations and the other nine were used in an inter-hive study over a 41-week sampling period. All samples were analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The highest mean concentration from nine hives used in the inter-hive study was 4627 µg/kg eight days (D8) after treatment. The concentration of ciprofloxacin declined to an average concentration of 1756 µg/kg at D30 and 733 µg/kg at D283 (over-winter sample). A generalized additive model was used to fit a smooth curve for trend estimation. For some individual hives the concentration of ciprofloxacin increased slightly at the later sampling time-points. Consequently it was not possible to interpolate, with confidence, a finite withdrawal period for ciprofloxacin at theoretical MRLs between 25 and 500 µg/kg. The observed variation in concentration of ciprofloxacin between hives indicates that the validity of the EU guideline for bees/honey, which requires five samples from five hives to calculate a withdrawal period, may require revision.

Abstract
We have used systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) to isolate RNA aptamers against aminoglycoside antibiotics. The SELEX rounds were toggled against four pairs of aminoglycosides with the goal of isolating reagents that recognize conserved structural features. The resulting aptamers bind both of their selection targets with nanomolar affinities. They also bind the less structurally related targets, although they show clear specificity for this class of antibiotics. We show that this lack of aminoglycoside specificity is a common property of aptamers previously selected against single compounds and described as "specific". Broad target specificity aptamers would be ideal for sensors detecting the entire class of aminoglycosides. We have used ligand-induced aggregation of gold-nanoparticles coated with our aptamers as a rapid and sensitive assay for these compounds. In contrast to DNA aptamers, unmodified RNA aptamers cannot be used as the recognition ligand in this assay, whereas 2'-fluoro-pyrimidine derivatives work reliably. We discuss the possible application of these reagents as sensors for drug residues and the challenges for understanding the structural basis of aminoglycoside-aptamer recognition highlighted by the SELEX results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Multiple topical treatments are often required for clinical cure of mycotic rhinosinusitis in dogs. The objective of this study was to describe the distribution and retention of enilconazole and clotrimazole solutions using a temporary trephination protocol. METHODS Nine client-owned dogs diagnosed with mycotic rhinosinusitis between March 2008 and December 2009 were prospectively enrolled and were sequentially allocated to receive treatment with either clotrimazole (1% in polyethylene glycol) or enilconazole (10% solution), after imaging and rhinoscopic assessment. Both frontal sinuses were trephined, debrided and flushed with saline. Infusion was administered via frontal sinuses with dogs in sternal recumbency and computed tomography (CT) performed 5 minutes after completion. Distribution was scored 1 to 4 at the canine tooth, premolar 4, cribriform plate and frontal sinus on both sides, for a maximum score of 32. RESULTS Distribution of antifungal agents to all regions of the nasal cavity and frontal sinuses was achievable, but varied considerably. Retention was poor in 10 of 18 regions assessed. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Distribution of antifungal agents within the frontal sinuses is achievable using temporary trephination; however, distribution is variable and retention is often poor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence and prevalence of obesity are increasing world wide. In the UK, obesity governmental strategy has primarily focused on prevention measures, with less focus on the demands of treating obese patients in hospital. Increasing service demand by obese patients coupled with a lack of adequate provision for care of these patients may lead to an increase in patient safety incidents. By classifying patient safety incidents associated with obesity reported to the National Patient Safety Agency, this report aims to identify areas for improvement in the quality and safety of care of the obese patient. METHODS A search of the National Reporting and Learning System database was conducted for all incidents caused by or relating to obesity for the period 1 January 2005 to 31 August 2008. The keywords 'obesity', 'overweight', 'BMI' (body mass index), and 'bariatric' were used. The relevant free text fields of the resulting set of incidents were then searched for the terms designed to isolate incidents occurring in anaesthesia, critical care, and surgery. Reported incidents were analysed and subsequently categorised to identify incident themes. Levels of harm were also established. RESULTS 555 patient safety incidents were identified; 388 met inclusion criteria for analysis. 148 incidents were related to assessment, diagnosis or treatment, 213 related to infrastructure and 27 related to staffing. The majority of incidents were classified as no or low harm. Three deaths were reported, all within the domain of anaesthesia. CONCLUSIONS This report identifies that the majority of safety incidents associated with obesity were related to infrastructure, suggesting that there is inadequate provision in place for the care of obese patients. While levels of harm were mostly low, the occurrence of incidents resulting in severe harm or death highlights the specific dangers associated with the care of the obese patient. A global approach to improving the safety of care delivery for obese patients is recommended, including obesity specific training, management structures, care pathways, and equipment provisioning.Further planning and development of operation policies is needed to ensure the safe delivery of healthcare to obese patients in the future.

Abstract
A robust screening assay employing solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by a novel aptamer-based procedure is presented for the rapid detection and semiquantitation of the triphenylmethane dye, Malachite Green (MG) and its primary metabolite Leucomalachite Green (LMG) in fish tissue. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported use of an RNA aptamer for the development of a diagnostic assay for the detection of chemical residues in food. The aptamer based screening assay is found to be highly specific for MG; but has negligible affinity for the LMG metabolite. However, because the LMG metabolite is lipophilic and known to be highly persistent in tissues, an oxidation step has been incorporated within the sample cleanup procedure to ensure that all LMG residues are converted to MG prior to measurement. This article provides evidence that an oligonucleotide aptamer can be used as an alternative recognition element to conventional antibodies with application to the detection of residues in food. Furthermore, this finding has the future potential to reduce the number of animals currently being used in the production of antibodies for immunodiagnostic kits.

Abstract
Aminoglycosides (AGs) are a large and diverse group of antibiotics. Although AGs may cause side effects of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, they are still occasionally being used for the treatment of serious infections. In this study the development of a method is described for the quantitative determination and confirmation of seven aminoglycosides (and relevant isomers) and spectinomycin in animal tissues. The extraction was based on an extraction followed by a concentration and clean-up step using weak cation exchange solid phase extraction. The separation was performed by ion-pair liquid chromatography on a C(18) column followed by mass spectrometric detection. The method was validated according to the EU requirements for a quantitative confirmatory method. Permethylated aminoglycosides (in-house synthesised internal standards) were used for accurate quantification. The accuracy of the analyses of AGs in kidney ranged from 94 to 111%, intra-day precision ranged between 2.5 and 7.4% (R.S.D.(r)) and inter-day precision ranged between 2.2 and 17.3% (R.S.D.(RL), n=21, MRL level). Accuracy (muscle tissue) varied from 83 to 128% with an intra-day precision between 2.2 and 17.3% (R.S.D.(r), n=7, MRL level). From the results it was concluded that the method was able to monitor MRL levels which ranged from 750 to 20,000 microgkg(-1) for kidney and from 50 to 10,000 microgkg(-1) for muscle tissue.

Abstract
Bee colonies were treated with 1.2g lincomycin hydrochloride per hive (single treatment in sucrose solution) and samples of honey were then collected at intervals over a 41-week period. The samples were analysed for lincomycin using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The highest mean concentration of lincomycin (pooled analytical results for brood and super honey) was 24 microugg(-1) 3 days after treatment, a mean of 3.5 microgg(-1) after 129 days. The shook swarm procedure was investigated and resulted in a lincomycin concentration of 34 microgg(-1) in honey (pooled results for brood and super honey) 3 days after treatment, declining to 0.38 microgg(-1) 129 days after treatment. Lincomycin was persistent in the hive and detected in all over winter (290 days after dosing) samples of honey collected from both non-shook swarmed and shook swarmed colonies. The results overall indicate that lincomycin parent is a suitable marker compound to detect lincomycin misuse in apiculture.

Abstract
A rapid, high-throughput antimicrobial screening assay for the detection of fluoroquinolone and 4-quinolone residues in foods of animal origin has been developed in ampoule format. The assay employs a single Escherichia coli species sensitive to those Gram-negative inhibitiory antimicrobial compounds and is presented in a comparable format to the existing commercially available Premi Test and Delvotest ampoule-based microbial inhibition tests (DSM, Delft, The Netherlands). In the novel E. coli assay the microorganism, in vegetative state, is inoculated into a nutrient agar pellet containing a pH sensitive acid-base indicator dye. A simple extraction protocol that is selective for fluoroquinolone and quinolone compounds was developed to recover, cleanup and concentrate the target analyte(s) from a variety of tissue types and matrices prior to screening analysis. The method detected 16 target compounds at concentrations equal to or below the maximum residue limits (where applicable). The method has been validated using the prototype assay in accordance with the 2002/657/EC guidelines for the validation of qualitative screening assays. False positive and false negative responses rates for the procedure have been determined as less than 5%. The stability of a selection of representative target analytes has been demonstrated for a 20-week period under a variety of storage conditions both in tissue and in extract.

Abstract
Two isolates of a novel babuvirus causing "bunchy top" symptoms were characterised, one from abacá (Musa textilis) from the Philippines and one from banana (Musa sp.) from Sarawak (Malaysia). The name abacá bunchy top virus (ABTV) is proposed. Both isolates have a genome of six circular DNA components, each ca. 1.0-1.1 kb, analogous to those of isolates of Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV). However, unlike BBTV, both ABTV isolates lack an internal ORF in DNA-R, and the ORF in DNA-U3 found in some BBTV isolates is also absent. In all phylogenetic analyses of nanovirid isolates, ABTV and BBTV fall in the same clade, but on separate branches. However, ABTV and BBTV isolates shared only 79-81% amino acid sequence identity for the putative coat protein and 54-76% overall nucleotide sequence identity across all components. Stem-loop and major common regions were present in ABTV, but there was less than 60% identity with the major common region of BBTV. ABTV and BBTV were also shown to be serologically distinct, with only two out of ten BBTV-specific monoclonal antibodies reacting with ABTV. The two ABTV isolates may represent distinct strains of the species as they are less closely related to each other than are isolates of the two geographic subgroups (Asian and South Pacific) of BBTV.

Abstract
A post-screening classification assay for tetracycline compounds has been developed and integrated into the previously reported optimized PremiTest methodology. The new post-antimicrobial screening assay is based on a metal ion chelation using calcium and sodium chloride and has been shown to be specific towards the tetracycline class. The assay is both cost-effective and complementary to the post-screening procedures that have previously been developed for the beta-lactam and sulfonamide compounds. A validation study was conducted in accordance with 2002/657/EC (Commission Decision). The method is rugged and applicable to a range of tetracyclines of differing antimicrobial potencies over a wide concentration range. A blind trial was undertaken in which all antimicrobial residues in the unknown samples were successfully identified by the analyst following the integrated PremiTest procedure for the classification of antimicrobial compounds.

Abstract
The EU maximum residue limit (MRL) definition for amitraz is 'the sum of amitraz plus all its metabolites containing the 2,4-aniline moiety, expressed as amitraz'. A rapid and sensitive method has been developed and validated in-house for the determination of total amitraz in pears, strawberries, oranges and honey. Samples were hydrolysed (under acidic followed by alkaline conditions) to convert amitraz to 2,4-dimethyaniline, which was then partitioned into 2,2,4-trimethylpentane prior to quantification by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The method was validated at 0.02 and 0.1 mg kg(-1) amitraz (well below MRL requirements) with a lowest calibrated level (LCL) for 2,4-dimethylaniline of 0.002 mg kg(-1) (equivalent to 0.0024 mg kg(-1) amitraz). A single partition step yielded recoveries of approximately 60% (with % CV values in the range 3.3-8.2), which is satisfactory for screening purposes. A second partition increased recoveries by 10-20%, making the method suitable for the quantification of residues.

Abstract
In the production of "organic" meat, one of the controlled processes is the use of veterinary drugs. Strict standards are in place as to when and how such drugs may be used. Therefore, the aim of this project was to determine whether it was possible to distinguish between a single therapeutic dose of a tetracycline (permitted under the standards) and both multiple therapeutic dosing and prophylactic dosing (not permitted). This comprised an evaluation of (i) pigs that were treated with oxytetracycline and (ii) chickens dosed with two different tetracycline antibiotics (oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline). The methodology described, using bone sectioning and examination under ultraviolet illumination (either direct observation or fluorescent microscopy), allows samples from animals that have been treated with different dosing regimes (a single therapeutic dose, two successive therapeutic doses, and long-term, low-level "prophylactic" dosing) to be assessed for compliance with organic farming regulations. Validation of the methodology by blind checks of unknown samples by a second operator has been successfully performed, and validation results are presented. The developed methodology has been shown to be applicable to a variety of species and a selection of tetracycline drugs.

Abstract
Guinea pigs (n=10/group) were fed one of three diets: a high carbohydrate (CHO) (42% energy), low cholesterol (0.04%) diet (LChHC), a diet with the same amount of CHO but with 0.25% cholesterol (HChHC) or a diet with 11% of energy from CHO and 0.25% cholesterol (HChLC) for 12 weeks. VLDL- and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) were higher in the HChLC and HChHC groups than in the LChHC group (P<.0001). Lipoprotein subclasses and size were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance. Dietary cholesterol (HChHC and HChLC groups) resulted in larger VLDL particles (71.1+/-6.9, 78.9+/-3.33 nm, respectively) than those in the LChHC group (44.3+/-10.8 nm). In addition, there were higher concentrations of the large VLDL (>60 nm) and the medium VLDL (>35 nm) in the high cholesterol groups (P<.01). Similarly, the concentration of the medium (>8.2 nm) and small HDL (>7.2 nm) was higher in the HChHC and HChLC groups (P<.001). In contrast, CHO restriction affected the concentrations of LDL subfractions. The number of total LDL particles was lower in the HChLC (291.3+/-85.0 nmol/L) than in the HChHC group (467.6+/-113.1 nmol/L), indicating that the cholesterol in LDL was distributed in less particles in the former group. The concentrations of medium LDL (>19.8 nm) (98.4+/-90.8) and small LDL (>18 nm) (29.3+/-24.9 nmol/L) were lower in the HChLC group than in the HChHC group (261.8+/-105.8 and 64.9+/-27.9 nmol/L, respectively). These results indicate that dietary cholesterol increased the atherogenicity of both VLDL and HDL while CHO restriction increased the number of large LDL and decreased the concentrations of the more atherogenic smaller LDL subfractions.

Abstract
The change of concentration of residues of the marker compound for the anti-coccidial drug nicarbazin, N,N'-bis(4-nitrophenyl)urea (dinitrocarbanilide, DNC), was investigated in model oil and aqueous solutions and in chicken muscle and egg. In model aqueous solutions, DNC decreased rapidly in concentration upon heating followed by a much more gradual decomposition. The curves produced when this information was plotted were not typical of exponential decay. In model cooking oil solutions, DNC generally showed a slower decrease in concentration over time when compared with aqueous solutions. DNC residues in egg were stable to microwave cooking and residues in chicken muscle were stable to stewing and microwaving. Other cooking procedures led to a decrease in amount of DNC by 22% to 48% of the total amount of analyte present. Only a small amount (<2%) of residue leached with juices which exuded as the food was cooked.

Abstract
In recent years there has been an increase in the use of tylosin in apiculture as bacterial brood diseases become resistant to oxytetracycline. Confirmatory mass spectrometry based methods have been developed but up until now there has been no complementary screening method available capable of sub 10 microg kg(-1) detection limits. In this paper the development and validation of a screening method using optical biosensor technology is presented. The honey was first dissolved in a phosphate buffer and following solid-phase extraction (SPE) cleanup was analyzed using a Biacore Q instrument. Using the criteria specified in European Commission Decision 2002/657/EC for qualitative screening methods, the detection capability (CCbeta) of the method was determined to be 2.5 microg kg(-)(1). Honey samples containing trace residue levels of tylosin were analyzed by both the biosensor screening method and a LC-MS/MS confirmatory procedure; the results were in good agreement.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess oxytetracycline (OTC) residue levels in honey up to 12 weeks after treatment of honeybee colonies with two methods of application (in liquid sucrose and in powdered icing sugar). Significantly greater mortality was seen in the all stages of brood development for the treated colonies when compared with the controls. Samples of honey were extracted up to 12 weeks after treatment and analysed by HPLC following metal chelation with a limit of quantitation of 0.05 mg/kg. These data showed that the current method of application of Terramycin in liquid form results in very high residue levels in honey with residues of 3.7 mg/kg eight weeks after application. Further work is required to determine whether the levels can be further reduced by changes in the method of application whilst ensuring efficacy and minimizing the effects on brood.

Abstract
Sw-5 is an important disease resistance gene of tomato, providing broad resistance to Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). A cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) marker, closely linked to the gene, has been reported. Although the Sw-5 locus has been characterised, a gene-specific marker has not been developed. This paper presents a PCR-based marker-system that consists of the co-amplification of a dominant marker representing the Sw-5 gene sequence, and the modified CAPS marker as a positive control and indicator of genotype.
