Abstract
Layered transition metal oxides are commonly used as the cathode materials in sodium-ion batteries due to their low cost and easy manufacturing. However, the application is hindered by poor rate performance and complex phase transitions. To address these challenges, a new seven-component high-entropy layered oxide cathode material, O3-NaNi0.25Fe0.15Mn0.3Ti0.1Sn0.05Co0.05Li0.1O2 (HEO) has been developed. The entropy stabilization effect plays a crucial role in improving the performance of electrochemical systems and the stability of structures. The HEO exhibits a specific discharge capacity of 154.1 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C and 94.5 mA h g-1 at 7 C. In-situ and ex-situ XRD results demonstrate that the HEO effectively retards complex phase transitions. This work provides a high-entropy design for the storage materials with a high energy density. Meanwhile, it eliminates industry doubts about the performance of sodium ion layered oxide cathode materials.

Abstract
Direct regeneration has gained much attention in LiFePO4 battery recycling due to its simplicity, ecofriendliness, and cost savings. However, the excess carbon residues from binder decomposition, conductive carbon, and coated carbon in spent LiFePO4 impair electrochemical performance of direct regenerated LiFePO4. Herein, we report a preoxidation and prilling collaborative doping strategy to restore spent LiFePO4 by direct regeneration. The excess carbon is effectively removed by preoxidation. At the same time, prilling not only reduces the size of the primary particles and shortens the diffusion distance of Li+ but also improves the tap density of the regenerated materials. Besides, the Li+ transmission of the regenerated LiFePO4 is further improved by Ti4+ doping. Compared with commercial LiFePO4, it has excellent low-temperature performance. The collaborative strategy provides a new insight into regenerating high-performance spent LiFePO4.

Abstract
PURPOSE Medulloblastoma (MB), a common and heterogeneous posterior fossa tumor in pediatric patients, presents diverse prognostic outcomes. To advance our understanding of MB's intricate biology, the development of novel patient tumor-derived culture MB models with necessary data is still an essential requirement. METHODS We continuously passaged PUMC-MB1 in vitro in order to establish a continuous cell line. We examined the in vitro growth using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and in vivo growth with subcutaneous and intracranial xenograft models. The xenografts were investigated histopathologically with Hematoxylin and Eosin (HE) staining and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Concurrently, we explored its molecular features using Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), targeted sequencing, and RNA sequecing. Guided by bioinformatics analysis, we validated PUMC-MB1's drug sensitivity in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS PUMC-MB1, derived from a high-risk MB patient, displayed a population doubling time (PDT) of 48.18 h and achieved 100% tumor growth in SCID mice within 20 days. HE and Immunohistochemical examination of the original tumor and xenografts confirmed the classification of PUMC-MB1 as a classic MB. Genomic analysis via WGS revealed concurrent MYC and OTX2 amplifications. The RNA-seq data classified it within the Group 3 MB subgroup, while according to the WHO classification, it fell under the Non-WNT/Non-SHH MB. Comparative analysis with D283 and D341med identified 4065 differentially expressed genes, with notable enrichment in the PI3K-AKT pathway. Cisplatin, 4-hydroperoxy cyclophosphamide/cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and dactolisib (a selective PI3K/mTOR dual inhibitor) significantly inhibited PUMC-MB1 proliferation in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSIONS PUMC-MB1, a novel Group 3 (Non-WNT/Non-SHH) MB cell line, is comprehensively characterized for its growth, pathology, and molecular characteristics. Notably, dactolisib demonstrated potent anti-proliferative effects with minimal toxicity, promising a potential therapeutic avenue. PUMC-MB1 could serve as a valuable tool for unraveling MB mechanisms and innovative treatment strategies.

Experience in treating children with ocular dyskinesia and hemifacial spasm secondary to pontine tumours adjacent to the fourth ventricle and systematic review. Childs Nerv Syst 2024; 40:1349-1360. [PMID: 38227027 DOI: 10.1007/s00381-024-06280-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/04/2023] [Accepted: 01/03/2024] [Indexed: 01/17/2024]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the treatment plan and prognosis of children with ocular dyskinesia and hemifacial spasm secondary to pontine tumours adjacent to the fourth ventricle. METHODS In this retrospective study, the clinical information of 10 consecutively collected children with ocular dyskinesia and hemifacial spasm secondary to pontine tumours adjacent to the fourth ventricle was analyzed. All 10 children underwent pontine tumour resection through a trans-cerebellomedullary fissure approach; 4 children underwent preoperative diffusion tensor imaging scans to determine the relationship between the tumour and facial nerve nucleus, and the other 6 children underwent intraoperative deep electroencephalography (EEG) tumour monitoring, in which the tumour electrical discharge activity of the tumour was recorded. A voxel distribution map was established to describe the distribution of the tumour location, and patient prognosis was evaluated through clinical and imaging follow-up. RESULTS All 10 children achieved total tumour resection; 9 tumours were pathologically suggested to be ganglioglioma (WHO grade I), and 1 was a hamartoma. The symptoms of the original ocular dyskinesia and hemifacial spasm disappeared immediately after the operation. The children were followed up for 4-75 months, and none of the symptoms recurred; four cases with preoperative diffusion tensor imaging showed that the tumour was close to the facial nerve. Four in six intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring showed that the tumour had electrical discharge behaviour, and the tumour distribution map indicates a high density of tumour presence in the facial nerve nucleus and the nucleus of the abducens nerve. CONCLUSIONS In paediatric patients, the facial symptoms are related to the location and abnormal electrical discharge of the tumour. There is no significant correlation between ocular dyskinesia and the location of the tumour. Conventional antiepileptic therapy for this disease is ineffective, and early surgical intervention for total tumour resection can achieve a clinical curative effect.

Abstract
Seawater electrolysis presents a promising avenue for green hydrogen production toward a carbon-free society. However, the electrode materials face significant challenges including severe chlorine-induced corrosion and high reaction overpotential, resulting in low energy conversion efficiency and low current density operation. Herein, we put forward a nanoporous nickel (npNi) cathode with high chlorine corrosion resistance for energy-efficient seawater electrolysis at industrial current densities (0.4-1 A cm-2). With the merits of an electrostatic chlorine-resistant surface, modulated Ni active sites, and a robust three-dimensional open structure, the npNi electrode showed a low hydrogen evolution reaction overpotential of 310 mV and a high electricity-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 59.7% at 400 mA cm-2 in real seawater and outperformed most Ni-based seawater electrolysis cathodes in recent publications and the commercial Ni foam electrode (459 mV, 46.4%) under the same test condition. In situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, high-frame-rate optical microscopy, and first-principles calculation revealed that the improved corrosion resistance, enhanced intrinsic activity, and mass transfer were responsible for the lowered electrocatalytic overpotential and enhanced energy efficiency.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the safety and therapeutic effect of split liver transplantation (SLT) in clinical application. Methods: This is a retrospective case-series study. The clinical data of 203 consecutive SLT, 79 living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) and 1 298 whole liver transplantation (WLT) performed at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from July 2014 to July 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Two hundred and three SLT liver grafts were obtained from 109 donors. One hundred and twenty-seven grafts were generated by in vitro splitting and 76 grafts were generated by in vivo splitting. There were 90 adult recipients and 113 pediatric recipients. According to time, SLT patients were divided into two groups: the early SLT group (40 cases, from July 2014 to December 2017) and the mature SLT technology group (163 cases, from January 2018 to July 2023). The survival of each group was analyzed and the main factors affecting the survival rate of SLT were analyzed. The Kaplan-Meier method and Log-rank test were used for survival analysis. Results: The cumulative survival rates at 1-, 3-, and 5-year were 74.58%, 71.47%, and 71.47% in the early SLT group, and 88.03%, 87.23%, and 87.23% in the mature SLT group, respectively. Survival rates in the mature SLT group were significantly higher than those in the early SLT group (χ2=5.560,P=0.018). The cumulative survival rates at 1-, 3- and 5-year were 93.41%, 93.41%, 89.95% in the LDLT group and 87.38%, 81.98%, 77.04% in the WLT group, respectively. There was no significant difference among the mature SLT group, the LDLT group and the WLT group (χ2=4.016, P=0.134). Abdominal hemorrhage, infection, primary liver graft nonfunction, and portal vein thrombosis were the main causes of early postoperative death. Conclusion: SLT can achieve results comparable to those of WLT and LDLT in mature technology liver transplant centers, but it needs to go through a certain time learning curve.

Clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of low-grade epilepsy-associated brain tumors. Ther Adv Neurol Disord 2024; 17:17562864241237851. [PMID: 38525487 PMCID: PMC10958794 DOI: 10.1177/17562864241237851] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/07/2023] [Accepted: 02/09/2024] [Indexed: 03/26/2024] Open
Abstract
Background Low-grade epilepsy-associated brain tumors (LEATs) are found to be the second most common lesion-related epilepsy. Malignant potential of LEATs is very low and the overall survival is good, so the focus of treatment is focused more on seizure outcome rather than oncological prognosis. Objectives This study was conducted to evaluate the risk factors of seizure outcomes after resection in patients with LEATs. Design A retrospective study. Methods A retrospective analysis of patients with LEATs who underwent resective surgery in our three epilepsy centers between October 2010 and April 2023 with a minimum follow-up of 1 year. Demography, clinical characters, neurophysiology, and molecular neuropathology were assessed for association with postoperative seizure outcomes at 1-, 2-, and 5-year follow-up. Synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) algorithm model was performed to handle the imbalance of data distribution. Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB) algorithms were created as a basis for classifying outcomes according to observation indicators. Results A total of 111 patients were enrolled in the cohort. The most common pathology was ganglioglioma (n = 37, 33.3%). The percentage of patients with seizure freedom was 91.0% (101/111) at 1-year follow-up, 87.5% (77/88) at 2-year follow-up, and 79.1% (53/67) at 5-year follow-up. Partial resection had a significantly poor seizure outcome compared to total resection and supratotal resection (p < 0.05). The epileptiform discharge on post-resective intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) or postoperative scalp electroencephalography (EEG) were negative factors on postoperative seizure freedom at 1-, 2-, or 5-year follow-ups (p < 0.05). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve value of the GNB-SMOTE model was 0.95 (95% CI, 0.876-1.000), 0.892 (95% CI, 0.656-0.934), and 0.786 (95% CI, 0.491-0.937) at 1-, 2-, and 5-year follow-up, respectively. Conclusion The partial resection, post-resective intraoperative ECoG, and postoperative scalp EEG were valuable indicators of poor seizure outcomes. The utilization of post-resective intraoperative ECoG is beneficial to improve seizure outcomes. Based on the data diversity and completeness of three medical centers, a multivariate correlation analysis model was established based on GNB algorithm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hydrocephalus is a common comorbidity of brain tumors in children that may persist following brain tumor resection. This study aimed to explore perioperative risk factors associated with postoperative ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement for tumors located at or adjacent to the CSF circulation pathway. METHODS Patients aged 0-18 years with tumors invading or adjacent to the CSF circulation pathways who underwent brain tumor resection between October 2015 and September 2021 were included in this study. The outcome metric was whether patients underwent VPS placement within 6 months of tumor resection. Patients were followed up every 3-6 months after surgery. Demographic and perioperative imaging characteristics, clinical variables, and long-term treatments, including radiotherapy or chemotherapy, were included in the analysis. RESULTS Two hundred sixty-five children were included in this study. Of these patients, 38 (14.34%) underwent VPS placement within 6 months of tumor resection. One hundred thirty-two patients (49.81%) presented with preoperative hydrocephalus. Results from the multivariate analysis showed that medulloblastoma (OR 4.15, 95% CI 1.74-9.91, p = 0.001), lateral/third ventricle tumors (OR 4.07, 95% CI 1.33-12.30, p = 0.014), postoperative intraventricular hematoma (OR 3.36, 95% CI 1.53-7.38, p = 0.003), and presence of subdural hygroma in the nonoperated area within 48 hours after tumor resection (OR 2.78, 95% CI 1.15-6.74, p = 0.024) were independent risk factors for postoperative VPS placement. CONCLUSIONS Postoperative lateral/third ventricle hematoma and subdural hygroma in the nonoperated area, anatomical location, and tumor histology may be potential risk factors for a postoperative VPS after brain tumor resection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Craniopharyngiomas are low-grade malignancies (WHO I) in the sellar region. Most cases of childhood-onset craniopharyngioma are adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma, and neurosurgery is the treatment of choice. Affected patients have postoperative complications, including water and electrolyte disturbances, because these malignancies develop near the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Determining postoperative serum sodium fluctuation patterns in these patients can reduce postoperative mortality and improve prognosis. OBJECTIVE To measure changes in serum sodium levels in pediatric patients who underwent craniopharyngioma surgery and identify influencing factors. METHODS This retrospective study measured the serum sodium levels of 202 patients aged 0-18 years who underwent craniopharyngioma resection in Beijing Tiantan Hospital and Beijing Children's Hospital and identified predictors of severe hyponatremia and hypernatremia. RESULTS The mean age of the cohort was 8.35 ± 4.35 years. The prevalence of hypernatremia, hyponatremia, and their severe forms (serum Na+ > 150 mmol/L and serum Na+ < 130 mmol/L) within 14 days after surgery was 66.3%, 72.8%, 37.1%, and 40.6%, respectively. The mean postoperative serum sodium level showed a triphasic pattern, characterized by two peaks separated by a nadir. Sodium levels peaked on days 2 (143.6 ± 7.6 mmol/L) and 14 (143.2 ± 6.7 mmol/L) and reached their lowest on day 6 (135.5 ± 7.5 mmol/L). A total of 31 (15.3%) patients met the diagnostic threshold for hyponatremia and hypernatremia of the triphase response, whereas 116 (57.4%) patients presented this pattern, regardless of met the diagnostic criteria or not. The prevalence of severe hyponatremia varied depending on preoperative endocrine hormone deficiency, tumor status (primary or recurrent), and surgical approach. CONCLUSIONS Serum sodium levels after craniopharyngioma resection in children showed a triphasic pattern in most cases. The risk of postoperative hyponatremia varied depending on preoperative endocrine hormone deficiency, tumor status (primary or recurrent), and surgical approach.

Abstract
The manganese oxide (MnO2 and iron-doped manganese oxide (Fe-MnO2) nanoparticles (NPs) with reduced band gap (Eg) were fabricated through the co-precipitation process. They used to degrade Indigo Carmine (IC) and Rhodamine B (RB) binary mixture in an aqueous medium under solar light irradiation. From FT-IR, the twisting modes of the Mn-O bond and the stretching vibrations of the Fe-Mn-O2 bond were confirmed from the peaks observed at 480 cm-1,584 cm-1,675 cm-1, and 900 cm-1, 1150 cm-1, and 1200 cm-1 respectively. The MnO2 has an optical band gap of 3.2 eV, which was decreased to 3 eV in Fe-MnO2. The zero charge (PZC) point was 8 for Fe-MnO2 and 7 for MnO2. The BET surface area for Fe-MnO2 was 398 m2/g, relatively higher than MnO2 particles, having a surface area of 384 m2/g. The average crystallite sizes calculated from Scherer formulae were 37 nm for MnO2 and 31 nm for Fe-MnO2 NPs. SEM confirmed the irregular morphology of the prepared particles. It was analyzed that agglomeration occurs in MnO2 than the Fe-MnO2. The maximum degradation of IC dye was 99%, and that of RB was 98% at the optimum conditions. The data were best fitted to second-order kinetics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current studies have indicated that tumoral morphologic features are associated with cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS), but the radiomics application in CMS is scarce. PURPOSE To develop a model for CMS discrimination based on multiparametric MRI radiomics in patients with posterior fossa tumors. STUDY TYPE Retrospective. POPULATION A total of 218 patients (males 132, females 86) with posterior fossa tumors, 169 of which were included in the MRI radiomics analysis. The MRI radiomics study cohort (169) was split into training (119) and testing (50) sets with a ratio of 7:3. FIELD/SEQUENCE All the MRI were acquired under 1.5/3.0 T scanners. T2-weighted image (T2W), T1-weighted (T1W), fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). ASSESSMENT Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps were generated from DWI. Each MRI dataset generated 1561 radiomics characteristics. Feature selection was performed with univariable logistic analysis, correlation analysis, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) penalized logistic regression. Significant clinical features were selected with multivariable logistic analysis and used to constructed the clinical model. Radiomics models (based on T1W, T2W, FLAIR, DWI, ADC) were constructed with selected radiomics features. The mix model was based on the multiparametric MRI radiomics features. STATISTICAL TEST Multivariable logistic analysis was utilized during clinical features selection. Models' performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC) curve. Interobserver variability was assessed using Cohen's kappa. Significant threshold was set as P < 0.05. RESULTS Sex (aOR = 3.72), tumor location (aOR = 2.81), hydrocephalus (aOR = 2.14), and tumor texture (aOR = 5.08) were significant features in the multivariable analysis and were used to construct the clinical model (AUC = 0.79); totally, 33 radiomics features were selected to construct radiomics models (AUC = 0.63-0.93). Seven of the 33 radiomics features were selected for the mix model (AUC = 0.93). DATA CONCLUSION Multiparametric MRI radiomics may be better at predicting CMS than single-parameter MRI models and clinical model. EVIDENCE LEVEL 4. TECHNICAL EFFICACY 2.

Abstract
Objective Hypothalamic-pituitary axis dysfunction is a common complication in post-operative craniopharyngioma(CP) patients, and it greatly impacts the long-term quality of life of such patients. To better understand the effects of postoperative hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction and long-term hormone replacement therapy in patients with childhood CP, we assessed approximately 200 patients with childhood-onset CP postoperatively. Methods Clinical details of patients with childhood-onset CP who underwent sellar tumor resection in Beijing Children's Hospital and Beijing Tiantan Hospital from 2018 to 2019 were retrieved retrospectively. The participants were followed up to assess the effects of post-operative long-term hormone replacement therapy and assess the tumor recurrence rate. Results The median age of admission was 8.1 (1.8, 14.3) years. Headache (45.5%), visual impairment (39.5%), and nausea (33.0%) were the most common clinical manifestations. ACP accounted for 95% of all CP cases. The incidence of central adrenal insufficiency and central hypothyroidism within the first week after surgery was 56.2% and 70.3%, respectively. At the same time 85.5% of the patients required at least one dose of desmopressin to control urine output. Total survival and tumor recurrence rates were 98.6% and 26.1%, respectively, with a median follow-up time of 29.7 (19.0, 40.3) months. During the follow-up period, 28.1% patients met the diagnostic criteria for short stature, while 54.4% fit the criteria for obesity. In addition, 94.4% of the patients were taking at least one kind of hormone substitution, and 74.7% were taking three or more. The prevalence of levothyroxine, glucocorticoid, desmopressin, and growth hormone replacement therapy was 87.3%, 77.5%, 78.9% and 31.0%, respectively. The proportion of patients treated with the substitutive combination of levothyroxine, hydrocortisone, and desmopressin was 54.9%. Conclusion This study is a large-sample systematic postoperative endocrine function evaluation of patients with childhood-onset CP. Due to the high prevalence of post-operative hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction, patients with CP usually require long-term multiple hormone substitution therapy. Individualized management and accurate hormone replacement dosage for postoperative childhood-onset CP patients are of great importance.

Abstract
Total saponins of Codonopsis (TSC) are a kind of critical bioactive substances in Codonopsis, which have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-ulcer, immunomodulatory effects, and protective effects on ulcerative enteritis. In this study, TSC (3.75 mL/kg, gavage) was administered once a day to 13-day gestation Kunming mice for 5 days. On day 13 of birth, the offspring were given Escherichia coli solution (0.15 mL/mouse, intraperitoneal injection) and senna leaf decoction (0.15 mL/mouse, gavage) once a day for 6 days. The results showed that gestation maternal administration of TSC effectively reduced the diarrhea index, increased the content of sIgA, IgG, SOD, and GSH, inhibited the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway in the intestine, reduced the expression of inflammatory factors, and alleviated intestinal injury in the littermates. The results provided a critical reference for the clinical application of TSC to control diarrhea in animal offspring.

Abstract
Confinement effects in highly porous nanostructures can effectively adjust the selectivity and kinetics of electrochemical reactions, which can boost the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In this work, carbonized ZIF-8-confined hollow PtCo nanospheres (PtCo@carbonized ZIF-8) were fabricated using a facile strategy. A monodisperse confined region was successfully prepared, and the dispersion of the PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) could be precisely regulated, allowing for the effective tuning of the confined region. Thus, the precise regulation of the catalytic reaction was achieved. Importantly, hollow PtCo NPs were prepared using a method based on the Kirkendall effect, and their forming mechanism was systematically investigated. Because of the confinement effects of carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), the crystal and electronic structures of the PtCo NPs were able to be effectively tuned. Our electrochemical results show that PtCo@carbonized ZIF-8 composites manifest a higher mass activity (1.4 A mgPt-1) and better stability compared to commercial Pt/C.

Abstract
Medulloblastoma (MB) is one of the most common malignant childhood brain tumors (WHO grade IV). Its high degree of malignancy leads to an unsatisfactory prognosis, requiring more precise and personalized treatment in the near future. Multi-omics and artificial intelligence have been playing a significant role in precise medical research, but their implementation needs a large amount of clinical information and biomaterials. For these reasons, it is urgent for current MB researchers to establish a large sample-size database of MB that contains complete clinical data and sufficient biomaterials such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), cancer tissue, and urine. Unfortunately, there are few biobanks of pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors throughout the world for limited specimens, scarce funds, different standards collecting methods and et cl. Even though, China falls behind western countries in this area. The present research set up a standard workflow to construct the Beijing Children's Hospital Medulloblastoma (BCH-MB) biobank. Clinical data from children with MB and for collecting and storing biomaterials, along with regular follow-up has been collected and recorded in this database. In the future, the BCH-MB biobank could make it possible to validate the promising biomarkers already identified, discover unrevealed MB biomarkers, develop novel therapies, and establish personalized prognostic models for children with MB upon the support of its sufficient data and biomaterials, laying the foundation for individualized therapies of children with MB.

Abstract
Efficient recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is significant for solving environmental problems and promoting resource conservation. Economical recycling of LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries is extremely challenging due to the inexpensive production of LFP. Herein, we report a preoxidation combine with cation doping regeneration strategy to regenerate spent LiFePO4 (SLFP) with severely deteriorated. The binder, conductive agent, and residual carbon in SLFP are effectively removed through preoxidation treatment, which lays the foundation for the uniform and stable regeneration of LFP. Mg2+ doping is adopted to promote the diffusion efficiency of lithium ions, reduces the charge-transfer impedance, and further improves the electrochemical performance of the regenerated LFP. The discharge capacity of SLFP with severe deterioration recovers successfully from 43.2 to 136.9 mA h g-1 at 0.5 C. Compared with traditional methods, this technology is simple, economical, and environment-friendly. It provided an efficient way for recycling SLFP materials.

Abstract
Carbon-supported Pd-based clusters are one of the most promising anodic catalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) due to their encouraging activity and practical applications. However, unclear growth mechanism of Pd-based clusters on the carbon-based materials has hindered their extensive applications. Herein, we first introduce multi-void spherical PdBi cluster/carbon cloth (PdBi/CC) composites by an electrodeposition routine. The growth mechanism of PdBi clusters on the CC supports has been systemically investigated by evaluating the selected samples and tuning their compositions, which involve the big difference in standard redox potential between Pd2+/Pd and Bi3+/Bi and easy adsorption of Bi3+ on the surface of Pd-rich seeds. Benefitting from the ensembles of many nanocrystal subunits, multi-void spherical PdBi clusters can present collective properties and novel functionalities. In addition, the outstanding characteristics of CC supports enable PdBi clusters with stable nanostructures. Thanks to the unique structure, Pd20Bi/CC catalysts manifest higher EOR activity and better stability compared to Pd/CC. Systematic characterizations and a series of CO poisoning tests further confirm that the dramatically enhanced EOR activity and stability can be attributed to the incorporation of Bi species and the strong coupling of the structure between PdBi clusters and CC supports.

A defect in mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis impairs iron metabolism and causes elevated ceramide levels. Nat Metab 2023; 5:1595-1614. Abstract
In most eukaryotic cells, fatty acid synthesis (FAS) occurs in the cytoplasm and in mitochondria. However, the relative contribution of mitochondrial FAS (mtFAS) to the cellular lipidome is not well defined. Here we show that loss of function of Drosophila mitochondrial enoyl coenzyme A reductase (Mecr), which is the enzyme required for the last step of mtFAS, causes lethality, while neuronal loss of Mecr leads to progressive neurodegeneration. We observe a defect in Fe-S cluster biogenesis and increased iron levels in flies lacking mecr, leading to elevated ceramide levels. Reducing the levels of either iron or ceramide suppresses the neurodegenerative phenotypes, indicating an interplay between ceramide and iron metabolism. Mutations in human MECR cause pediatric-onset neurodegeneration, and we show that human-derived fibroblasts display similar elevated ceramide levels and impaired iron homeostasis. In summary, this study identifies a role of mecr/MECR in ceramide and iron metabolism, providing a mechanistic link between mtFAS and neurodegeneration.

Abstract
Coordinated ligands play crucial roles in tuning the electrochemical nitrate reduction performance of phthalocyanine (Pc)-based dual atom catalysts. With the assistance of axial O ligands, fast NO to NH3 conversion can be realized on O-Ni2-Pc and O-Cu2-Pc. A 2-N product, N2O, can be synthesized on Co2-Pc, Cr2-Pc, O-Co2-Pc, and O-Fe2-Pc through N-N coupling with high NO coverage. ΔENO can be identified as a valid descriptor to support rational M2-Pc design.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the characteristics of initial ocular symptoms in children with optic pathway glioma (OPG) at different age stages. Methods: A retrospective case series study was conducted. Clinical data of 16 children with OPG who were diagnosed and treated in the Department of Ophthalmology, Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University from April 2017 to July 2021 were collected. The initial ocular symptoms, clinical manifestations of the eyes and nervous system, imaging and histopathological features were analyzed, and the differences in initial ocular symptoms between infants and young children aged≤36 months and older children aged>36 months were compared. Results: Of all 16 children included, 9 were male and 7 were female. The onset age was 15.0 (6.3, 56.5) months, and the diagnosis age was 48.0 (11.3, 78.0) months. There were 11 infants and young children, and 5 older children. Eye symptoms were the initial manifestation in 11 cases, including 8 cases of infants and young children (5 cases presented with irregular nystagmus, 2 cases with strabismus, and 1 case with failure to chase visual target), and 3 cases of older children (2 cases presented with decreased vision and 1 case with optic disc edema). The imaging findings showed that optic chiasm-involved OPG accounted for the highest proportion, with 3 cases in older children and 8 cases in infants and young children. Among the 8 children with optic chiasm-involved OPG who underwent surgical treatment, 5 were diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma according to histopathological results. Seven children had useful vision saved after treatment, and 1 child had visual loss accompanied by cognitive impairment due to surgery after 4 years of nystagmus. Conclusion: OPG in children often manifests as initial ocular symptoms, with irregular nystagmus being more common in infants and young children, and vision loss being the main symptom in older children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Both dual-energy CT and quantitative susceptibility mapping can evaluate iron depositions in the brain. The purpose of this study was to compare these 2 techniques in evaluating brain iron depositions in Parkinson disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-one patients with Parkinson disease (Parkinson disease group) and 31 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (healthy control group) were included. All participants underwent brain dual-energy CT and quantitative susceptibility mapping. ROIs were set bilaterally in the globus pallidus, substantia nigra, red nucleus, caudate nucleus, and putamen. CT values and magnetic susceptibility values were obtained in each ROI. Differences in CT values and magnetic susceptibility values between the Parkinson disease and healthy control groups were compared, followed by analysis of receiver operating characteristic curves. Correlations between CT values and magnetic susceptibility values were then evaluated. RESULTS The CT values of the bilateral globus pallidus, substantia nigra, and red nucleus were higher in the Parkinson disease group (P < .05). The magnetic susceptibility values of the bilateral globus pallidus and substantia nigra were higher in the Parkinson disease group (P < .05). The CT value of the right globus pallidus in linear fusion images had the highest diagnostic performance (0.912). Magnetic susceptibility values of the bilateral globus pallidus in the Parkinson disease group were positively correlated with CT values at the level of 80 kV(peak), linear fusion images, and SN150 kV(p) (r = 0.466∼0.617; all, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Both dual-energy CT and quantitative susceptibility mapping could assess excessive brain iron depositions in Parkinson disease, and we found a positive correlation between CT values and magnetic susceptibility values in the bilateral globus pallidus.

Abstract
The practical application of Li-S batteries has been greatly hindered by severe shuttle effects and sluggish kinetics. Anchoring soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) onto host materials by chemisorption is an effective strategy for extending battery life. In this work, we performed systematic density functional theory calculations to evaluate the anchoring performance of O/F-covered MXene (M2TC2) in lithium-sulfur batteries. Our results indicate that the moderate anchoring strength (∼2.5 eV), outstanding sulfur reduction performance (UL > -0.6 V), and low lithium ion diffusion barrier (<0.2 eV) of Mo2CF2 and V2CF2 make them promising host materials for LiPSs. We further revealed the determinants of the strength of binding of LiPSs to M2CT2. On the basis of the strong correlation among QM, χO/F, and Ea, we established a "structure-property" equation to reveal the active origin of M2CT2. We expect that the framework established in this work will accelerate the development of Li-S batteries.

Abstract
The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) plays an important role in virus-host interactions. However, the mechanism by which the UPS is involved in innate immunity remains unclear. In this study, we identified a novel major latex protein-like protein 43 (NbMLP43) that conferred resistance to Nicotiana benthamiana against potato virus Y (PVY) infection. PVY infection strongly induced NbMLP43 transcription but decreased NbMLP43 at the protein level. We verified that B-box zinc finger protein 24 (NbBBX24) interacted directly with NbMLP43 and that NbBBX24, a light responsive factor, acted as an essential intermediate component targeting NbMLP43 for its ubiquitination and degradation via the UPS. PVY, tobacco mosaic virus, (TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) infections could promote NbMLP43 ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation to enhance viral infection. Ubiquitination occurred at lysine 38 (K38) within NbMLP43, and non-ubiquitinated NbMLP43(K38R) conferred stronger resistance to RNA viruses. Overall, our results indicate that the novel NbMLP43 protein is a target of the UPS in the competition between defense and viral anti-defense and enriches existing theoretical studies on the use of UPS by viruses to promote infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pediatric patients are at risk of persistent hydrocephalus after posterior fossa tumor resection. The relationship between surgery-related factors and postoperative symptomatic hydrocephalus has not been elucidated. The objective of this study was to analyze features influencing postoperative hydrocephalus in Chinese children. METHODS The authors retrospectively evaluated 197 patients younger than 15 years of age who underwent posterior fossa tumor resection at their institution from January 2015 to June 2021. The outcome was whether children underwent CSF diversion within 6 months of resection. Preoperative characteristics, surgery-related factors, and postoperative features were included to identify independent prognosticators. A new logistic model containing independent prognosticators was developed and compared with the modified Canadian Preoperative Prediction Rule for Hydrocephalus (mCPPRH). RESULTS In this study, 30 patients (15.2%) underwent CSF diversion within 6 months after tumor resection. Tumor location and consistency, intracranial or spinal tumor metastasis determined by perioperative cerebral and spinal MRI, intraoperative blood loss, ventricular blood as determined on postoperative CT, and pathology were statistically significant variables in the univariate analysis. The only two independent predictors of postoperative symptomatic hydrocephalus were tumor metastasis (OR 3.463, 95% CI 1.137-10.549; p = 0.029) and postoperative ventricular blood (OR 4.212, 95% CI 1.595-11.122; p = 0.004). The final logistic model comprising tumor metastasis and postoperative ventricular blood was found to have better discrimination than the mCPPRH. CONCLUSIONS Tumor characteristics and surgery-related features were associated with postoperative symptomatic hydrocephalus. Tumor metastasis and postoperative ventricular blood were found to be important prognosticators of persistent hydrocephalus.

Abstract
Background We aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics, clinical presentations, and prognoses in a national health center for children. Methods From January 2015 to December 2020, 484 patients aged 0-16 years, who were diagnosed with brain tumors and received neurosurgery treatment, were enrolled in the study. Pathology was based on the World Health Organization 2021 nervous system tumor classification, and tumor behaviors were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, third edition. Results Among the 484 patients with brain tumors, the median age at diagnosis was 4.62 [2.19, 8.17] years (benign tumors 4.07 [1.64, 7.13] vs. malignant tumors 5.36 [2.78, 8.84], p=0.008). The overall male-to-female ratio was 1.33:1(benign 1.09:1 vs. malignant 1.62:1, p=0.029). Nausea, vomiting, and headache were the most frequent initial symptoms. The three most frequent tumor types were embryonal tumors (ET, 22.8%), circumscribed astrocytic gliomas (20.0%), and pediatric-type diffuse gliomas (11.0%). The most common tumor locations were the cerebellum and fourth ventricle (38.67%), the sellar region (22.9%) and ventricles (10.6%). Males took up a higher proportion than females in choroid plexus tumors (63.6%), ET (61.1%), ependymal tumors (68.6%), and germ cell tumors (GCTs, 78.1%). Patients were followed for 1 to 82 months. The overall 5-year survival rate was 77.5%, with survival rates of 91.0% for benign tumors and 64.6% for malignant tumors. Conclusion Brain tumors presented particularly sex-, age-, and regional-dependent epidemiological characteristics. Our results were consistent with previous reports and might reflect the real epidemiological status in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS)-related voxels and build a voxel-wise predictive model for CMS. METHODS From July 2013 to January 2022, 188 pediatric patients diagnosed with posterior fossa tumor were included in this study, including 38 from a prospective cohort recruited between 2020 and January 2022, and the remaining from a retrospective cohort recruited in July 2013-Aug 2020. The retrospective cohort was divided into the training and validation sets; the prospective cohort served as a prospective validation set. Voxel-based lesion symptoms were assessed to identify voxels related to CMS, and a predictive model was constructed and tested in the validation and prospective validation sets. RESULTS No significant differences were detected among these three data sets in CMS rate, gender, age, tumor size, tumor consistency, presence of hydrocephalus and paraventricular edema. Voxels related to CMS were mainly located in bilateral superior and inferior cerebellar peduncles and the superior part of the cerebellum. The areas under the curves for the model in the training, validation and prospective validation sets were 0.889, 0.784 and 0.791, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Superior and inferior cerebellar peduncles and the superior part of the cerebellum were related to CMS, especially the right side, and voxel-based lesion-symptom analysis could provide valuable predictive information before surgery.

Children with CMS had a significantly lower mean QoL score (65.3 vs. 83.7, p < 0.001) and subdomain mean scores (physical; 57.8 vs. 85.3, p < 0.001; social: 69.5 vs. 85.1, p = 0.001; academic: p = 0.001) than those without CMS, except for the emotional domain (78.0 vs. 83.7, p = 0.062). Multivariable analysis revealed that CMS (coefficient = -14.748.61, p = 0.043), chemotherapy (coefficient = -7.629.82, p = 0.013), ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement (coefficient = -10.14, p = 0.024), and older age at surgery (coefficient = -1.1830, p = 0.007) were independent predictors of low total QoL scores. Physical scores were independently associated with CMS (coefficient = -27.4815.31, p = 0.005), VP shunt placement (coefficient = -12.86, p = 0.025), and radiotherapy (coefficient = -13.62, p = 0.007). Emotional score was negatively associated with age at surgery (coefficient = -1.92, p = 0.0337) and chemotherapy (coefficient = -9.11, p = 0.003). Social scores were negatively associated with male sex (coefficient = -13.68, p = 0.001) and VP shunt placement (coefficient = -1.36, p = 0.005), whereas academic scores were negatively correlated with chemotherapy (coefficient = -17.45, p < 0.001) and age at surgery (coefficient = -1.92, p = 0.002). Extent of resection (coefficient = 13.16, p = 0.021) was a good predictor of higher academic scores. Conclusion CMS results in long-term neurological and neuropsychological deficits, negatively affecting QoL, and warranting early rehabilitation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, the authors aimed to investigate the relationship between postoperative MRI features and cerebellar mutism syndrome. METHODS A retrospective cohort of patients who underwent tumor resection from July 2013 to March 2021 for midline posterior fossa tumors was investigated. All patients were followed up at least once. Clinical data were extracted from medical records and follow-up databases. Two neuroradiologists independently reviewed preoperative and postoperative MRI. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to compare the postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome (pCMS) and non-pCMS groups. Correlation analysis was performed using the Spearman correlation coefficient analysis. RESULTS Of 124 patients, 47 (37.9%) developed pCMS. The median follow-up duration was 45.73 (Q1: 33.4, Q3: 64.0) months. The median duration of mutism was 45 days. The median tumor size was 48.8 (Q1: 42.1, Q3: 56.8) mm. In the univariable analysis, abnormal T2-weighted signal of the left dentate nucleus (DN) (74.5% in the pCMS group vs 36.4% in the non-pCMS group, p < 0.001), right DN (83.0% vs 40.3%, p < 0.001), left superior cerebellar peduncle (SCP) (74.5% vs 27.3%, p < 0.001), right SCP (63.8% vs 23.4%, p < 0.001), left middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) (51.1% vs 26.0%, p = 0.008), and right MCP (61.7% vs 26.0%, p < 0.001); male sex (83.0% vs 45.5%, p < 0.001); vermis 3 impairment (49.4% vs 19.1%, p = 0.002); solid tumor (91.5% vs 72.7%, p = 0.022); and hydrocephalus (72.3% vs 45.5%, p = 0.006) were more frequent in the pCMS group than in the non-pCMS group. Multivariable logistic analysis showed that male sex (adjusted OR 4.08, p = 0.010) and the cerebro-cerebellar circuit score of T2-weighted images (adjusted OR 2.15, p < 0.001) were independent risk factors for pCMS. The cerebro-cerebellar circuit score positively correlated with the duration of mutism. In Cox regression analysis, the cerebro-cerebellar integrated circuit injury score of T2 (adjusted HR 0.790, 95% CI 0.637-0.980; p = 0.032) and injury of vermis 3 (adjusted HR 3.005, 95% CI 1.197-7.547; p = 0.019) were independently associated with the duration of mutism. CONCLUSIONS Male sex and cerebro-cerebellar circuit damage are independent risk factors for pCMS. The cerebro-cerebellar circuit score indicates the duration of mutism.

Abstract
Importance The safety and efficacy of the bath-plug technique for the closure of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks in children remain unknown. Objective We undertook this study to ascertain whether the bath-plug technique was safe and effective for the repair of CSF leaks. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent endoscopic repair of CSF leaks with the fat graft as a plug-in at Beijing Children's Hospital from March 2016 to May 2020. Demographic data, medical history, defect sites and sizes, interventions, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. One representative clinical case was additionally selected to highlight the procedure and the healing process. Results A total of 18 pediatric patients were included in this study. The group was composed of 11 boys and seven girls, aged from 5 to 123 months. The etiologies included congenital CSF leaks (n = 9) and head trauma (n = 9). Among all patients, 12 fistulas (66.7%) were located at the cribriform plate area, two (11.1%) at the roof of the ethmoid sinuses, two (11.1%) in the sphenoid sinus, and two (11.1%) at the frontal sinus. The maximum diameters of fistulas ranged from 5 to 20 mm, with a median value of 8 mm. Encephaloceles were identified in 14 (77.8%) patients. No hydrocephalus was recognized. All CSF leaks were successfully repaired with a bath-plug technique. Follow-up ranged from 50 to 70 months. No surgical complications were encountered in any patient. Interpretation Bath-plug technique is safe and reliable for the endoscopic management of CSF leaks in children. Meticulous peri-operative preparations are important for pediatric patients.

Abstract
Objective: To summarize the clinical and imaging features of linear scleroderma en coup de saber (LSCS) with central nervous system involvement in children. Methods: The clinical data(clinical manifestations and imaging features) of 6 children diagnosed with LSCS with central nervous system involvement who were admitted to Beijing Children's Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University from May 2019 to November 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The 6 patients were all female, aged 6.8 (3.3, 11.0) years at the time of diagnosis, and aged 3.0 (1.7, 4.1) years at the time of discovery of facial skin lesions. Facial skin lesions appeared before neurological symptoms in 5 cases, and neurological symptoms appeared 2 months before skin lesions in 1 case. All the patients had "sword wound" skin lesions on the forehead with alopecia. Neurological manifestations included epileptic seizures in 6 cases, focal neurological defects in 5 cases, and headaches in 2 cases. The intracranial lesions were all ipsilateral to the skin lesions. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 6 cases showed abnormal signals mainly involving white matter in 1 hemisphere, and 3 cases showed local encephalomalacia. The scattered low signal was observed in 5 cases on susceptibility weighted imaging. Localized brain parenchyma or leptomeninges enhancement was seen on Gadolinium-enhanced sequences in 5 cases. Scattered foci of calcification on the affected side were seen on cranial CT in 4 cases. Skin biopsy was performed in 2 cases. Part of the lesion of the brain was removed in 1 case, and the pathological findings suggested small vasculitis, which was consistent with skin pathological changes. All patients received symptomatic treatment with antiepileptic drugs. Oral prednisone combined with methotrexate was given in 4 cases, and 1 case was given oral prednisone only. One case was presumed to be in the resting stage of the disease due to significant cerebral atrophy in half of the brain, and only antiepileptic drugs were added. The patients were followed up for 6-36 months. The skin lesions of scleroderma and alopecia did not progress in 5 cases, and hemifacial atrophy was developed in 1 case, which was considered to be combined with Parry-Romberg syndrome. The seizures were controlled in 4 cases. One case had reduced seizure frequency but left hemiplegia. One patient still had intractable epilepsy and paroxysmal headache. Conclusions: LSCS with central nervous system involvement is more common in girls, with seizures and neurological defects as the main manifestations. Intracranial lesions are mostly ipsilateral to the skin lesions. Cerebral microbleeds, calcification, and encephalomalacia foci are common, and the pathological changes in skin and intracranial lesions are consistent with small-vessel vasculitis. Prednisone combined with methotrexate treatment has shown some efficacy, but some children remain with refractory epilepsy and neurological deficit symptoms.

Facile synthesis of magnetic ZnFe 2O 4/AC composite to activate peroxydisulfate for dye degradation under visible light irradiation. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2022; 29:76321-76338. [PMID: 35666419 DOI: 10.1007/s11356-022-21253-3] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/20/2022] [Accepted: 05/30/2022] [Indexed: 06/15/2023]
Abstract
Heterogeneous photocatalysis/persulfate oxidation process has been considered as a promising technology for dye contaminants removal. The magnetic ZnFe2O4/active carbon (AC) composites were hydrothermally synthesized and firstly used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible LED light irradiation. The optimized Vis-ZnFe2O4/AC(4/1)-PDS system can enhance the RhB degradation efficiency by 32.01% and 13.87% compared with Vis-ZnFe2O4-PDS and Vis-AC-PDS systems, respectively. The influence of operational parameters such as catalyst dosage (0.2 - 0.4 g L-1), PDS concentration (1.0 - 2.0 g L-1), temperature (25 - 45 °C), solution pH (2.7 - 10.9), and coexisting inorganic ions (Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, PO43-, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Ca2+) on RhB degradation was studied, and 100% of RhB (20 mg L-1) was degraded after 80 min at operational condition: 0.30 g L-1 of ZnFe2O4/AC(4/1) and 1.5 g L-1 of PDS, solution pH of 2.74, reaction temperature of 25 °C. The quenching experiments, EPR test, and XPS analysis were employed to reveal the proposed mechanism, which demonstrated that 1O2 played a more important role than other reactive species (SO4•-, •OH, O2•-, and h+) in RhB degradation. The generation of 1O2 via the two routes was as follows: (i) the in situ formed active oxygen (O*) reacted with HSO5- to produce 1O2; (ii) O2•- was oxidized by h+ to form 1O2. After five consecutive cycles, the photodegradation efficiency of RhB by ZnFe2O4/AC(4/1) catalyst slightly decreased from 88.52 to 83.92%, indicating the excellent reusability of ZnFe2O4/AC(4/1) photocatalyst. As designed, Vis-ZnFe2O4/AC-PDS oxidation system can effectively remove RhB from the different real water matrices, and the degradation efficiency of RhB in tap water, river water, and secondary effluent was 78.24%, 79.55%, and 74.53% after 80 min of reaction, respectively.

Protective Effects of Astilbin Against Cadmium-Induced Apoptosis in Chicken Kidneys via Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Signaling Pathway. Biol Trace Elem Res 2022; 200:4430-4443. Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) can cause endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and apoptosis in animals. The kidney is an organ seriously affected by Cd because it can accumulate metal ions. Astilbin (ASB) is a dihydroflavonol rhamnoside, which has an anti-renal injury effect. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of ASB on Cd-induced ERS and apoptosis in the chicken kidney. In this study, a total of 120 1-day-old chickens were randomly divided into 4 groups. Chickens were fed with a basic diet (Con group), ASB 40 mg/kg (ASB group), CdCl2 150 mg/kg + ASB 40 mg/kg (ASB/Cd group), and CdCl2 150 mg/kg (Cd group) for 90 days. The results showed that Cd exposure induced pathological and ultrastructural damages and apoptosis in chicken kidneys. Compared with the Con group, metallothionein (MT1/MT2) level, nitric oxide (NO) content, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity, ERS-related genes 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein (Grp78), protein kinase PKR-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (Perk), activating transcription factor 4 (Atf4) and CAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) homologous protein (Chop), and pro-apoptotic gene B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)-associated X (Bax), caspase-12, caspase-9, caspase-3 expression levels, and apoptotic rate were significantly increased in the Cd group. The expression level of Bcl-2 was significantly decreased in the Cd group. ASB/Cd combined treatment significantly improves the damage of chicken kidneys by ameliorating Cd-induced kidney ERS and apoptosis. Cd can cause the disorder of the GRP78 signal axis, activate the PERK-ATF4-CHOP pathway, aggravate the structural damage and dysfunction of ER, and promote the apoptosis of chicken kidneys, while the above changes were significantly alleviated in the ASB/Cd group. The results showed that ASB antagonizes the negative effects of Cd and against Cd-induced apoptosis in chicken kidneys via ERS signaling pathway.

Socioeconomic inequalities in cancer incidence and access to health services among children and adolescents in China: a cross-sectional study. Lancet 2022; 400:1020-1032. [PMID: 36154677 DOI: 10.1016/s0140-6736(22)01541-0] [Citation(s) in RCA: 34] [Impact Index Per Article: 17.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/08/2022] [Revised: 08/01/2022] [Accepted: 08/01/2022] [Indexed: 02/03/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the substantial burden caused by childhood cancer globally, childhood cancer incidence obtained in a nationwide childhood cancer registry and the accessibility of relevant health services are still unknown in China. We comprehensively assessed the most up-to-date cancer incidence in Chinese children and adolescents, nationally, regionally, and in specific population subgroups, and also examined the association between cancer incidence and socioeconomic inequality in access to health services. METHODS In this national cross-sectional study, we used data from the National Center for Pediatric Cancer Surveillance, the nationwide Hospital Quality Monitoring System, and public databases to cover 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in mainland China. We estimated the incidence of cancer among children (aged 0-14 years) and adolescents (aged 15-19 years) in China through stratified proportional estimation. We classified regions by socioeconomic status using the human development index (HDI). Incidence rates of 12 main groups, 47 subgroups, and 81 subtypes of cancer were reported and compared by sex, age, and socioeconomic status, according to the third edition of the International Classification of Childhood Cancer. We also quantified the geographical and population density of paediatric oncologists, pathology workforce, diagnoses and treatment institutions of paediatric cancer, and paediatric beds. We used the Gini coefficient to assess equality in access to these four health service indicators. We also calculated the proportions of cross-regional patients among new cases in our surveillance system. FINDINGS We estimated the incidence of cancer among children (aged 0-14 years) and adolescents (aged 15-19 years) in China from Jan 1, 2018, to Dec 31, 2020. An estimated 121 145 cancer cases were diagnosed among children and adolescents in China between 2018 and 2020, with world standard age-standardised incidence rates of 122·86 (95% CI 121·70-124·02) per million for children and 137·64 (136·08-139·20) per million for adolescents. Boys had a higher incidence rate of childhood cancer (133·18 for boys vs 111·21 for girls per million) but a lower incidence of adolescent cancer (133·92 for boys vs 141·79 for girls per million) than girls. Leukaemias (42·33 per million) were the most common cancer group in children, whereas malignant epithelial tumours and melanomas (30·39 per million) surpassed leukaemias (30·08 per million) in adolescents as the cancer with the highest incidence. The overall incidence rates ranged from 101·60 (100·67-102·51) per million in very low HDI regions to 138·21 (137·14-139·29) per million in high HDI regions, indicating a significant positive association between the incidence of childhood and adolescent cancer and regional socioeconomic status (p<0·0001). The incidence in girls showed larger variation (48·45% from the lowest to the highest) than boys (36·71% from lowest to highest) in different socioeconomic regions. The population and geographical densities of most health services also showed a significant positive correlation with HDI levels. In particular, the geographical density distribution (Gini coefficients of 0·32-0·47) had higher inequalities than population density distribution (Gini coefficients of 0·05-0·19). The overall proportion of cross-regional patients of childhood and adolescent cancer was 22·16%, and the highest proportion occurred in retinoblastoma (56·54%) and in low HDI regions (35·14%). INTERPRETATION Our study showed that the burden of cancer in children and adolescents in China is much higher than previously nationally reported from 2000 to 2015. The distribution of the accessibility of health services, as a social determinant of health, might have a notable role in the socioeconomic inequalities in cancer incidence among Chinese children and adolescents. With regards to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, policy approaches should prioritise increasing the accessibility of health services for early diagnosis to improve outcomes and subsequently reduce disease burdens, as well as narrowing the socioeconomic inequalities of childhood and adolescent cancer. Abstract
In deep coal mining, grouting reinforcement and water blockage are the most effective means for reinforcing the rock mass of extremely broken coal. However, traditional cement grouting materials are not suitable for use in complex strata because of their insufficient early mechanical strength and slow setting time. This study innovatively proposes using alkali-activated grouting material to compensate for the shortcomings of traditional grouting materials and strengthen the reinforcement of extremely unstable broken coal and rock mass. The alkali-activated grouting material was prepared using slag as raw material combined with sodium hydroxide and liquid sodium silicate activation. The compressive strength of specimens cured for 1 d, 3 d, and 28 d was regularly measured and the condensation behavior was analyzed. Using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, formation behavior of mineral crystals and microstructure characteristics were further analyzed. The results showed that alkali-activated slag grouting material features prompt and high strength and offers the advantages of rapid setting and adjustable setting time. With an increase in sodium hydroxide content, the compressive strength first increased (maximum increase was 21.1%) and then decreased, while the setting time continued to shorten. With an increase in liquid sodium silicate level, the compressive strength increased significantly (and remained unchanged, maximum increase was 35.9%), while the setting time decreased significantly (and remained unchanged). X-ray diffraction analysis identified the formation of aluminosilicate minerals as the main reason for the excellent mechanical properties and accelerated coagulation rate.

Tuning Electrochemical Performance of Li-Rich Layered Cathode Materials with a Solid Phase Fusion Strategy. LANGMUIR : THE ACS JOURNAL OF SURFACES AND COLLOIDS 2022; 38:11219-11226. Abstract
Li-rich layered cathode materials (LRMs) have attracted extensive attention because of their high theoretical specific capacity. However, their practical application is limited by the severe depreciation of capacity and voltage during cycling. Herein, high electrical conductivity MoS2 is constructed on Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 (LLNM) surface through solid phase fusion technology (SFT). Extraordinarily, the MoS2 modified layer lessens the interface side reaction and stabilizes the surface structure of LLNM. Meanwhile, the strong electron conductivity of MoS2 speeds up electron transit at the surface. The results demonstrate that LLNM-M10 exhibits a remarkable electrochemical performance as it retains 183.3 mA h g-1 at 1 C after 250 cycles. More crucially, the modified electrode exhibits an exceptional low-temperature performance of 120.3 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C and -10 °C. Therefore, this presented strategy may provide a new method for further application of Li-rich layered cathode materials.

Abstract
Seizures are a common symptom of craniocerebral diseases, and epilepsy is one of the comorbidities of craniocerebral diseases. However, how to rationally use anti-seizure medications (ASMs) in the perioperative period of craniocerebral surgery to control or avoid seizures and reduce their associated harm is a problem. The China Association Against Epilepsy (CAAE) united with the Trauma Group of the Chinese Neurosurgery Society, Glioma Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Neuro-Oncology Branch of the Chinese Neuroscience Society, and Neurotraumatic Group of Chinese Trauma Society, and selected experts for consultancy regarding outcomes from evidence-based medicine in domestic and foreign literature. These experts referred to the existing research evidence, drug characteristics, Chinese FDA-approved indications, and expert experience, and finished the current guideline on the application of ASMs during the perioperative period of craniocerebral surgery, aiming to guide relevant clinical practice. This guideline consists of six sections: application scope of guideline, concepts of craniocerebral surgery-related seizures and epilepsy, postoperative application of ASMs in patients without seizures before surgery, application of ASMs in patients with seizures associated with lesions before surgery, emergency treatment of postoperative seizures, and 16 recommendations.

Male Predisposition in Cerebellar Mutism Syndrome: a Cohort Study. CEREBELLUM (LONDON, ENGLAND) 2022:10.1007/s12311-022-01449-6. [PMID: 35870083 DOI: 10.1007/s12311-022-01449-6] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Accepted: 07/15/2022] [Indexed: 06/15/2023]
Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the association between sex and cerebellar mutism syndrome and to examine other potential risk factors. This ambispective cohort study examined 218 pediatric patients (132 boys) with a posterior fossa tumor who underwent tumor resection from July 2013 to March 2021. The patients' demographics and tumor characteristics were examined and statistically analyzed to explore the associations among the variables. Multivariable and subgroup analyses were conducted to validate the independent risk factors for cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS). The male and female patients did not differ significantly in terms of age, tumor size, tumor location, tumor consistency, VP shunt placement before resection, extent of resection, or surgeon, as well as with respect to the presence of hydrocephalus or paraventricular edema. The overall incidence of CMS was 32.6%. The incidence of CMS was significantly higher in male patients than that in female patients (41.7% vs. 18.6%; P = 0.001). In the multivariable analysis, male sex (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.27; P = 0.001), solid tumor consistency (adjusted OR, 5.61; P = 0.001), midline location (adjusted OR, 3.78; P = 0.004), and hydrocephalus (adjusted OR, 2.56; P = 0.047) were independent risk factors for the CMS. Chi-square analysis revealed that solid tumor consistency and midline location were associated with medulloblastoma (P < 0.001). Male patients had a higher risk of developing CMS after a posterior fossa tumor resection. Midline location, solid tumor consistency, and hydrocephalus were independent risk factors for CMS.

Abstract
Previously, we described a large collection of Drosophila strains that each carry an artificial exon containing a T2AGAL4 cassette inserted in an intron of a target gene based on CRISPR-mediated homologous recombination. These alleles permit numerous applications and have proven to be very useful. Initially, the homologous recombination-based donor constructs had long homology arms (>500 bps) to promote precise integration of large constructs (>5 kb). Recently, we showed that in vivo linearization of the donor constructs enables insertion of large artificial exons in introns using short homology arms (100-200 bps). Shorter homology arms make it feasible to commercially synthesize homology donors and minimize the cloning steps for donor construct generation. Unfortunately, about 58% of Drosophila genes lack a suitable coding intron for integration of artificial exons in all of the annotated isoforms. Here, we report the development of new set of constructs that allow the replacement of the coding region of genes that lack suitable introns with a KozakGAL4 cassette, generating a knock-out/knock-in allele that expresses GAL4 similarly as the targeted gene. We also developed custom vector backbones to further facilitate and improve transgenesis. Synthesis of homology donor constructs in custom plasmid backbones that contain the target gene sgRNA obviates the need to inject a separate sgRNA plasmid and significantly increases the transgenesis efficiency. These upgrades will enable the targeting of nearly every fly gene, regardless of exon-intron structure, with a 70-80% success rate.

Colonoscopy skills improvement training improves patient comfort during colonoscopy. Surg Endosc 2022; 36:4588-4592. [PMID: 34622297 DOI: 10.1007/s00464-021-08753-y] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/16/2021] [Accepted: 09/27/2021] [Indexed: 01/29/2023]
Abstract
INTRODUCTION We aimed to assess the effect of Colonoscopy Skills Improvement (CSI) training on patient comfort and sedation-related complications during colonoscopy. METHODS This retrospective cohort study was performed on 19 endoscopists practicing in a Canadian tertiary care center who completed CSI training between October 2014 and May 2016. Data from 50 procedures immediately prior to, immediately after, and eight months following CSI training were included for each endoscopist. The primary outcome variable was intraprocedural comfort, and secondary outcomes included intraprocedural hypotension and hypoxia. Data were extracted from an electronic medical record and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Univariate analysis and stepwise multivariable logistic regression were performed to determine if there was an association between patient comfort and CSI training. Predictors of these outcomes including patient age, gender, sedation use and dosing, procedure completion, quality of bowel preparation, endoscopist experience, and specialty were included in the analysis. RESULTS 2533 colonoscopies were included in the study. The mean dose of sedatives was reduced immediately following CSI training and at 8 months for both Fentanyl (75.4 mcg v. 67.8 mcg v. 65.9 mcg, p < 0.001) and Midazolam (2.57 mg v. 2.27 mg v. 2.19 mg, p < 0.001). The percentage of patients deemed to have a comfortable exam improved following endoscopist participation in CSI training and remained improved at 8 months (55.1% v. 70.2% v. 69.8%, p < 0.001). No significant change in rates of intraprocedural hypoxia or hypotension were noted following CSI training. CONCLUSION CSI training is associated with improved patient comfort and reduced sedation requirements during colonoscopy.

Abstract
BackgroundDeep learning has been widely used for glaucoma diagnosis. However, there is no clinically validated algorithm for glaucoma incidence and progression prediction. This study aims to develop a clinically feasible deep-learning system for predicting and stratifying the risk of glaucoma onset and progression based on color fundus photographs (CFPs), with clinical validation of performance in external population cohorts.MethodsWe established data sets of CFPs and visual fields collected from longitudinal cohorts. The mean follow-up duration was 3 to 5 years across the data sets. Artificial intelligence (AI) models were developed to predict future glaucoma incidence and progression based on the CFPs of 17,497 eyes in 9346 patients. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve, sensitivity, and specificity of the AI models were calculated with reference to the labels provided by experienced ophthalmologists. Incidence and progression of glaucoma were determined based on longitudinal CFP images or visual fields, respectively.ResultsThe AI model to predict glaucoma incidence achieved an AUROC of 0.90 (0.81-0.99) in the validation set and demonstrated good generalizability, with AUROCs of 0.89 (0.83-0.95) and 0.88 (0.79-0.97) in external test sets 1 and 2, respectively. The AI model to predict glaucoma progression achieved an AUROC of 0.91 (0.88-0.94) in the validation set, and also demonstrated outstanding predictive performance with AUROCs of 0.87 (0.81-0.92) and 0.88 (0.83-0.94) in external test sets 1 and 2, respectively.ConclusionOur study demonstrates the feasibility of deep-learning algorithms in the early detection and prediction of glaucoma progression.FUNDINGNational Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); the High-level Hospital Construction Project, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University; the Science and Technology Program of Guangzhou, China (2021), the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) of Macau, and FDCT-NSFC.

Case Report: Congenital Intracranial Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma Treated With Surgical Resection. Front Surg 2022; 9:831190. Abstract
Background Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a locally aggressive but non-metastatic vascular neoplasm. Most studies have been restricted to small case series of limited generalizability. Intracranial KHE is extremely rare with only three cases reported in the literature. Here, we report a case of congenital intracranial KHE who underwent surgical resection, and no lesion recurrence was seen during the follow-up period of 13 months. Case Description A 2-month-old boy initially presented with a left temporal mass following birth. Antenatal ultrasound at 36 weeks of gestation demonstrated a hyperechoic signal present in the left frontal lobe, with clear borders and irregular morphology. There were neither cutaneous abnormalities nor other neurologic examination abnormalities. No laboratory abnormality was identified. Computed tomography (CT) scans suggested that a massive hematoma was noted under the left frontal skull plate, with a little subdural hemorrhage in the adjacent temporal area. The adjacent meninges enhanced and thickened on contrasted T1 magnetic resonance (MR). After the multidisciplinary diagnostic assessment, the surgery was performed by the left frontotemporal craniotomy approach. The operation was extremely difficult. We completely removed the tumor, and the involved dura and brain tissue were resected with the lesion in a piecemeal fashion. On postoperative-day (POD) 3 and POD 14, the head CT re-examination revealed that cerebral perfusion improved gradually. The MRI of 6- and 12-month after operation showed no local recurrence or metastasis. Conclusions Intracranial KHE is difficult to diagnose early and the prognosis has been uniformly poor. We supposed that meticulous intraoperative hemostasis is the key for a successful operation, and the radical resection of the tumor and involved structures are essential to reduce recurrence.

Serratia marcescens-S3 inhibits Potato virus Y by activating ubiquitination of molecular chaperone proteins NbHsc70-2 in Nicotiana benthamiana. Microb Biotechnol 2022; 15:1178-1188. Abstract
The potato virus Y (PVY) is a plant virus that causes massive crop losses globally, especially in Solanaceae crops. A strain of the plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), Serratia marcescens-S3 was found to inhibit PVY replication in Nicotiana benthamiana. However, there have been no in-depth studies demonstrating the underlying mechanism. In the current study, we found that ubiquitination of NbHsc70-2 is an important way for Serratia marcescens-S3 to trigger induced systemic resistance (ISR). After the treatment with S. marcescens-S3, the protein level of NbHsc70-2 reduced significantly. Inhibiting of ubiquitination increased the accumulation of NbHsc70-2 in plants and reduced S. marcescens-S3-mediated resistance to PVY. Furthermore, transgenic engineered Nicotiana benthamiana NbHsc70-2KO and NbHsc70-2USM were constructed using CRISPR-Cas9-mediated NbHsc70-2 knock-out and ubiquitination respectively. S. marcescens-S3 significantly reduced the inhibition of NbHsc70-2 protein accumulation in NbHsc70-2KO and NbHsc70-2USM . The virulence of PVY was stronger in NbHsc70-2USM than the wild-type plants. These results showed that S. marcescens-S3 increases the ubiquitination of NbHsc70-2 to inhibit the recruitment of molecular chaperone NbHsc70-2 to reduce its replication and infection of PVY.

Abstract
Introduction Rosai–Dorfman disease (RDD) is an uncommon, benign, and idiopathic histiocytic proliferative disorder. Multiple intracranial RDD is extremely rare and treatment varies. Case presentation A 9‐year‐old girl was admitted with 3‐month history of blurred vision and facial paralysis, a 2‐month history of recurrent giggle, and cognitive impairment. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed bilateral ventricular masses based on the dural membrane and the diameters of the masses were 9.1 cm and 9.2 cm, respectively. The lesions were completely removed with staging surgeries. Fifteen months after operation, blurred vision was still present but facial paralysis and giggle and cognitive impairment disappeared. Imaging examinations suggested that there were no new or recurring lesions. Conclusion For multiple large intracranial masses, surgical treatment is necessary and staged surgery benefits perioperative safety. Active follow‐up with magnetic resonance imaging is necessary.
