Carica papaya (Papaya) latex: a new paradigm to combat against dengue and filariasis vectors Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae)

This study manifests the larvicidal efficacy of Carica papaya latex extract and silver nanoparticles (CPAgNPs) synthesized using latex, against developing immature juveniles of Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. Briefly, the latex was collected and fractioned with different solvents such as chloroform, methanol and aqueously. The obtained crude extracts were subjected to larvicidal activity in the dose-dependent method. After 24 h, the mortality rate was calculated and statistically analyzed. From the results, it was demonstrated that the chloroform extract displayed prominent activity in IInd and IIIrd instar larvae of A. aegypti and C. quinquefasciatus with better LC50 values followed by methanol and aqueous extract. Subsequently, we profiled the qualitative analysis of a chloroform extract through biochemical tests; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Moreover, we authenticated the major secondary metabolites and activated larvicidal compound present in the extract. Further, we synthesized CPAgNPs using aqueous latex extract and challenged with IInd and IIIrd instar larvae of A. aegypti and C. quinquefasciatus. Noticeably, the synthesized nanoproducts were showed 100% mortality in a 24-h treatment with significant LC50 values. Hence, this study has opened up new vistas in the field of parasitological research to develop Carica papaya latex as a new stratagem in the insect vector management program.

Isolation of limonoid compound (Hamisonine) from endophytic fungi Penicillium oxalicum LA-1 (KX622790) of Limonia acidissima L. for its larvicidal efficacy against LF vector, Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae)

Upon screening for novel and potential biocompounds with larvicidal activities, we successfully isolated hamisonine (HMSN) a limonoid compound from endophytic fungi Penicillium oxalicum LA-1 of Limonia acidissima. The extracted compound structure was elucidated by spectral studies such as UV-vis spectroscopy, thin-layer chromatography, FTIR, LC-ESI-MS, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR upon comparing with the spectral data available in the literature. Further, the isolated HMSN was tested against III and IV instar Culex quinquefasciatus larvae. The outcome of this study clearly emphasize that the extracted compound HMSN possesses a stupendous larvicidal activity in a dose-dependent manner with the LC₅₀ and LC₉₀ values of 1.779 and 7.685 ppm against III instar larvae and 3.031 and 28.498 ppm against IV instar larvae of C. quinquefasciatus, respectively. Interestingly, the histological studies evidently showing the damage of peritrophic membrane and epithelial cells of testing mosquito larvae.

Impact of Coastal Pollution on Microbial and Mineral Profile of Edible Oyster (Crassostrea rivularis) in the Coastal Waters of Andaman

The impact of coastal pollution was studied using edible oysters, Crassostrea rivularis as an indicator at two sites viz., North Wandoor (NW) and Phoenix Jetty (PJ) in Port Blair, Andaman. The hydrographic parameters showed that nitrite, nitrate and phosphate concentration were less and dissolved oxygen were more at NW compared to PJ. The oysters were collected from the study sites and biochemical, microbial, mineral profiles and ATPase activities were estimated. ATPase activity was inhibited in the gill tissue of oysters (p<0.05) of PJ sample. Total microbial load in the water and oyster, and coliform bacteria (MPN) in the water were significantly (p<0.05) higher at PJ compared to the NW. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the mineral profile of water collected from both the sites. However, calcium and magnesium were more in the oysters collected from NW (p<0.05), and Cu, Zn and Cd were more in PJ samples (p<0.05).

Indoor air quality assessment in and around urban slums of Delhi city, India

The present study aims at investigating the indoor air quality (IAQ) in selected households in one of the urban slums i.e. the Nizamuddin slums in Delhi, the capital city of India. The study includes investigations and assessments on associated health effects on the occupants living in inefficiently designed houses having poor ventilation. The monitoring of indoor air pollutants e.g. the respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM), the carbon dioxide (CO2), the carbon monoxide (CO), the sulphur dioxide (SO2) and the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) for all three seasons i.e. summer (April-June 2004), rainy (July-September 2004) and winter (December 2004-February 2005) have been conducted. In addition, the spirometry tests on the occupants, particularly the womenfolk and children have been performed to determine the incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI). Questionnaire survey has also been conducted in the households during the study period to investigate the sick building syndrome (SBS). The study reveals maximum concentration of indoor air pollutants in households during winters (December 2004-February 2005) associated with aggravated respiratory problems like cough, phlegm, wheezing, and breathlessness among occupants particularly the women occupants. Besides, decrement in lung function indices (i.e. FVC and/or FEV1) due to increased concentrations of RSPM and CO2 indoors during winter period has also been observed in the women respondents. The study concludes that women and children indoors are most vulnerable to respiratory problems compared to other sexes. A high SBS score is observed in these 'urban poor' households because of inadequate ventilation.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

Development and assessment of a screening test for detecting childhood disabilities

The paper outlines the development and assessment of a screening test for broad-based identification of major disabilities in children under 6 years of age. The Disability Screening Schedule (DSS) has been developed which should act as a one time screen for all major disabilities viz. physical, motor, sensory and mental retardation. The DSS was developed after reviewing a number of existing screening instruments. It was pilot tested in 3 phases and suitably modified. Nineteen AWW received a short training and used the DSS to screen children with disabilities in their respective areas. It was field tested by administering it on 3560 children (0-6 years) drawn from nine urban slums of South Delhi. The workers used the DSS and identified 245 children as having an impairment/at risk conditions and 3315 children were reported as normal. The investigator cross checked 219 'impaired' and 536 'normal' children. On the basis of the review exercise, the DSS was validated and was found to have a sensitivity of 0.89 and a specificity of 0.98. The DSS is a short questionnaire, and the administration time is about 5 minutes.
