Improved estimation of dermal pesticide dose to agricultural workers upon reentry

Agricultural workers reentering fields after pesticide application to engage in hand labor activities are subject to potentially significant dermal exposures to residues on foliage and in soil. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for assessment of post-application exposures were originally described in the 1984 Pesticide Assessment Guidelines Subdivision K which is currently undergoing revision. A successor document will eventually appear as Series 875, Group B Postapplication Exposure Monitoring Test Guidelines. Regulatory protocols found in these documents utilize dislodgeable foliar residues, foliage-to-human-transfer coefficients, and duration of activity to estimate exposure. Dermal absorption factors are then used to estimate dose. However, the experiments from which absorption factors are derived typically involve constant or nearly constant exposures which are not consistent with assumed field exposure conditions. This can lead to inconsistent interpretation and questionable dose estimates. An AFL-CIO challenge to procedures used by EPA to estimate the dose of the fungicide captan [N-trichloromethylthio-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide] to strawberry harvesters, which elicited a response from EPA, provides a useful opportunity for examination of the derivation and use of absorption factors. An improved, but still relatively simple, method for dermal dose estimation featuring explicit treatment of the time dependence of absorption has been developed. A benefit of the proposed method is capability for consideration of the effect of delay in post-shift washing on dose.

Farmworker exposure to organophosphorus pesticide residues during apple thinning in central Washington State

The purpose of this study was to characterize worker exposure to azinphos-methyl (Guthion) over an entire 4-6 week apple-thinning season. Twenty workers from three work sites in the Chelan-Douglas County region of Washington state were recruited for the study. Exposure potential was estimated by dislodgeable foliar residue measurements, and individual exposures were estimated by biological monitoring through urinary metabolites. Measureable azinphos-methyl residues were found on apple foliage at all sites throughout the six-week sampling period, indicating continuous exposure potential (median residue level of 0.5 microgram/cm2). Measurable levels of the urinary dialkylphosphate metabolite, DMTP, were found in virtually all urine samples (limit of detection = 0.04 microgram/mL). Mean DMTP concentrations differed significantly across sites (0.53, 0.29, and 0.90 microgram/mL for Sites 1-3, respectively; analysis of variance, p < .002), and intraindividual variability was much greater than interindividual differences. Group mean DMTP concentrations at each site fluctuated according to foliar residue levels. Measurable DMTP concentrations were found in 9% of reference workers, ranging from 0.04-0.18 microgram/mL. Cholinesterase activity levels monitored with a field test kit were not considered reliable due to temperature changes of the instrument.

Long-term use of organophosphates and neuropsychological performance

This study evaluated neuropsychological effects due to chronic organophosphate use among farmers with no history of acute poisoning. Fifty-seven male tree fruit farmers (exposed) were compared with 42 age-matched male cranberry/blueberry growers and hardware store owners (unexposed). Univariate analyses of covariance (reading test as covariate) comparing exposed and unexposed subjects revealed significantly slower reaction time. No other significant differences were noted on tests of concentration, visuomotor skills, memory, expressive language, or mood. Based on an exposure metric derived from detailed exposure histories, farmers were divided into high exposure (n = 40) and low exposure (n = 59) groups, and their neuropsychological performance was compared. Analysis of covariance with age and reading test score as covariates revealed that the high exposure group had significantly slower reaction time, dominant hand. Long-term use of organophosphates without evidence of an acute poisoning episode appears to produce, at most, subtle changes in neuropsychological performance.

Behavioral changes following participation in a home health promotional program in King County, Washington

This study examined behavioral changes in households after participation in a home environmental assessment. Home assessment visits by a trained coach, which involved a walk-through in the home with the home residents, were conducted in 36 homes. The walk-through included a list of recommended behavioral changes that the residents could make to reduce their exposures to home pollutants in areas such as dust control, moisture problems, indoor air, hazardous household products, and hobbies. Recruited households were surveyed 3 months after the home assessment to evaluate their implementation of the recommendations. Following the home visits, 31 of 36 households reported making at least one behavioral change, and 41% of the recommendations made by the volunteer coaches were implemented. In conclusion, this study found that the majority of the households who participated in the home assessment reported implementing at least one recommendation. This home health promotional method was effective in influencing behavioral changes.
