Abstract
Organic fertilization and mycorrhization can increase the phytoremediation of copper-contaminated soils. The time of vermicomposting alters the properties of vermicompost, which can affect copper's availability and uptake. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the effect of different organic fertilizers and mycorrhization on copper-contaminated soil phytoremediation. The soil was contaminated with 100 mg Cu kg-1 dry soil and received mineral fertilizer (MIN), bovine manure (CM), and vermicompost produced in 45 days (V45) or 120 days (V120), all in doses equivalent to 40 mg kg-1 dry soil of phosphorus. Half of the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) plants were inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus clarus. At plant flowering, the dry mass and concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, Ca, Mg, P, and K in the soil, solution, and plant tissue were determined, in addition to mycorrhizal colonization, nodulation, photosynthetic pigments, and oxidative stress enzyme activity. Organic fertilization increased plant growth and copper accumulation in aerial tissues. These effects were more evident with the V120, making it suitable for use in copper phytoextraction. Mycorrhization increased root and nodule dry mass, making it recommended for phytostabilization. C. ensiformis nodulation in Cu-contaminated soils depends on vermicompost fertilization and mycorrhization. Hence, the copper phytoremediation by C. ensiformis is increased by using organic fertilization and mycorrhization.

Abstract
Vermicomposting is a biological process for efficient cattle manure treatment, but the vermicomposting time determines the quality of the vermicompost. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cattle manure vermicomposting time on earthworm biomass and the changes in physical, chemical, and biological in properties of the vermicompost. The cattle manure was inoculated with Eisenia andrei earthworms and conducted vermicomposting for 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 120 days. The analysis of 44 chemical, physical, and biological properties allowed the vermicomposting process to be divided into initial (<45 days) and final (45-120 days) phases. The initial phase was characterized by high microbial activity and the final by high physical-chemical transformation of the vermicompost and an increase in earthworm density. The organic matter aromaticity increased until the 45th day, subsequently decreasing. Although 30 d of vermicompost are sufficient to obtain a high-quality organic fertilizer, 120 d are necessary for producing matrices.

Abstract
Weeds can be hosting and alternative multipliers of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). Among the main weeds, species of the genus Ipomoea stands out for their cosmopolitan presence and the negative impact on crops. In addition, they can behave as hosts and promote the reproduction of pests, diseases, and nematodes. However, the ability of Meloidogyne nematodes to infect morning-glory (Ipomoea spp.) is little understood. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the reproduction of M. arenaria, M. enterolobii, M. ethiopica, M. hapla, M. incognita, M. javanica, M. luci, and M. morocciensis in I. grandifolia, I. hederifolia, I. nil, I. purpurea, and I. quamoclit. Plants were individually inoculated with 5,000 eggs and second-stage juveniles and kept in a greenhouse for 60 days. The design was completely randomized with six repetitions. After this period, the root system of each plant was evaluated to gall index (IG) and reproduction factor (RF). It was verified that the eight species of Melodoigyne have the capacity to parasitize I. grandifolia, I. hederifolia, I. nil, I. purpurea, and I. quamoclit, showing the susceptibility of these weeds to the plant-parasitic nematodes. The highest RF were observed for M. enterolobii with values of 12.5 and 12.9 for I. quamoclit and I. hederifolia, respectively. While M. arenaria obtained the lowest values, with RF ≤ 4.0 for all species of Ipomoea. Thus, weed species of the Ipomoea genus are potential hosts and multipliers of root-knot nematodes, making it important to be considered in integrated management strategies for these plant-parasitic nematodes.

Abstract
Medicinal plants Scoparia dulcis showing symptoms caused by root-knot nematodes were detected in the municipality of Cachoeira do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Based on the morphological, esterase phenotypes, and molecular analyses of the mitochondrial DNA region between the cytochome oxidase subunit II and 16S rRNA genes (mtDNA) and species-specific sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR), the causal agent of the observed symptoms was identified as Meloidogyne javanica. Pathogenicity was confirmed by fulfilling a modified version of Koch’s postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of M. javanica infecting S. dulcis in Brazil.

Abstract
Bacillus sp. CL18 was investigated to propose a bioprocess for protease production using feathers as organic substrate. In feather broth (FB), containing feathers as sole organic substrate (1-100 g l-1), maximal protease production was observed at 30 g l-1 (FB30) after 6 days of cultivation, whereas increased feather concentrations negatively affected protease production and feather degradation. Protease production peaks were always observed earlier during cultivations than maximal feather degradation. In FB30, 80% of initial feathers mass were degraded after 7 days. Addition of glucose, sucrose, starch, yeast extract (2 g l-1), CaCl2, or MgCl2 (10 mmol l-1) to FB30 decreased protease production and feather degradation. FB30 supplementation with NH4Cl (1 g l-1) resulted in less apparent negative effects on protease production, whereas peptone (2 g l-1) increased protease yields earlier during cultivations (3 days). Through a central composite design employed to investigate the effects of peptone and NH4Cl (0.5-4.5 g l-1) on protease production and feather degradation, FB30 supplementation with peptone and NH4Cl (0.5-1.1 g l-1) increased protease production within a shorter cultivation time (5 days) and hastened complete feather degradation (6 days). Feather bioconversion concurs with sustainable production of value-added products.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the early and late results of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a cardiology hospital and to try to detect prognostic determinants of both short- and long-term survival. METHODS A series of 557 patients who suffered cardiorespiratory arrest (CRA) at the Dante Pazzanese Cardiology Institute over a period of 5 years was analyzed to examine factors predicting successful resuscitation and long-term survival. RESULTS Ressuscitation maneuvers were tried in 536 patients; 281 patients (52.4%) died immediately, and 164 patients (30.6%) survived for than 24 hours. The 87 patients who survived for more than 1 month after CRA were compared with nonsurvivors. Coronary disease, cardiomyopathy, and valvular disease had a better prognosis. Primary arrhythmia occurred in 73.5% of the >1-month survivor group and heart failure occurred in 12.6% of this group. In those patients in whom the initial mechanism of CRA was ventricular fibrillation, 33.3% survived for more than 1 month, but of those with ventricular asystole only 4.3% survived. None of the 10 patients with electromechanical dissociation survived. There was worse prognosis in patients included in the extreme age groups (zero to 10 years and 70 years or more). The best results occurred when the cardiac arrest took place in the catheterization laboratories. The worst results occurred in the intensive care unit and the hemodialysis room. CONCLUSION The results in our series may serve as a helpful guide to physicians with the difficult task of deciding when not to resuscitate or when to stop resuscitation efforts.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the hemodynamic effects of milrinone in a 48h intravenous infusion in patients with severe congestive heart failure (CHF) (NYHA class III or IV). METHODS Forty patients with CHF were sequentially evaluated. Right heart catheterization was performed in order to measure, before and after administration of milrinone, several hemodynamic parameters (cardiac index, pulmonary wedge pressure, systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance). RESULTS There was a significant improvement in hemodynamic parameters (cardiac index, cardiac output), and a decrease in systemic vascular resistance and pulmonary vascular resistance. Serious side effects were not observed in these patients. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that milrinone is effective in the treatment of deteriorating phases of CHF and suggest that milrinone should be used in these select patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the short and long-term prognosis of a group of patients aged 40 and under, who developed an acute myocardial infarction. PATIENTS AND METHODS In the last 15 years we studied a group of 73 patients aged 40 and under with a confirmed diagnosis of first acute myocardial infarction. Patients with infarctions caused by coronary embolisms or to revascularization procedures were excluded. RESULTS Ninety percent were male and mean the age was 35. The most frequent risk factors observed were cigarette smoking in 64 (88%), hypertension in 16 (22%), hypercholesterolemia in 12 (16%) and diabetes in 3 (4%). Seven (9%) patients had no risk factors. The myocardial infarction was anterior em 50 (68%) cases and inferior in the remaining 23 (32%). Severe heart failure (Killip III and IV) was present in 3 (4%). Angiographic studies were performed in 63 (86%). Cineangiography showed critical coronary lesions (obstruction greater than 70%) in one vessel in 38 (60%) patients, multivessel disease in 18 (28%) and 7 (12%) had normal coronary vessels. In-hospital mortality was 5% (3 patients died due to severe heart failure and 1 due to cerebro-vascular accident). The 56 survivors were followed-up to 15 years, with overall survival of 74%. Fourty-nine (71%) were asymptomatic and 7 (10%) had recurrent chest pain. There were 7 (10%) late deaths and follow-up was lost in 6 (9%). Reinfarctions were observed in 5 cases (7%). Revascularization procedures were performed in 12 (17%) patients (bypass-graft surgery in 9 and coronary angioplasty in 3). CONCLUSION Young patients with acute myocardial infarction have a low mortality rate in the early phase and a favorable outcome after the discharge of the hospital.

Abstract
Isosorbide mononitrate in a dose of 20 mg t.i.d. was used in 25 patients admitted few hours after acute myocardial infarction. The following parameters were analysed: systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, clinical features, and laboratory data. Heart rate and diastolic blood pressure remained unchanged, however systolic blood pressure was slightly reduced (p less than 0.01). There was a reduction in the angina episodes post-AMI. None of the patients included in the study had clinical deterioration or showed infarction extension. There were no changes in laboratory data. After the interruption of the drug, one patient died on the 6th day with acute mitral insufficiency. In conclusion, isosorbide mononitrate can be safely used during an uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction, without the risk of haemodynamic deterioration, and helps to prevent post-infarction angina.

Abstract
Over recent years empty sella turcica has become more frequently diagnosed with high resolution computerized tomography and the associated clinical abnormalities have been better described. In this article the spectrum of clinical presentation is based on a review of 26 cases with six illustrative case reports. Recommendations for management and further assessment are presented. It is important for clinicians to be aware of the varying presentations of this syndrome, since it should not be considered simply as an incidental finding. A patient diagnosed with empty sella syndrome requires clinical and endocrine evaluation, and appropriate follow-up as determined by initial test results.
