Abstract
Objective: To retrospectively analyze the serological, virological, biochemical, liver histological status and clinical outcomes in HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with low HBV viral load, and to explore the necessity of antiviral therapy for these patients. Methods: A total of 99 HBeAg-negative CHB patients with HBV DNA level < 4 lg copies/ml who performed liver biopsy at the baseline were enrolled from the follow-up cohort. Among them, 23 cases received the second liver biopsy during follow-up. The relationships among the degree of inflammation and fibrosis of liver tissues, the status of HBsAg and HBcAg, age, gender, family history, HBV DNA load, serological markers and other indicators were analyzed. The pathological differences between two liver biopsy examinations were compared. The effect of nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) treatment on patient's clinical outcomes were analyzed. For multivariate analysis, a binary logistic regression model was performed. Log-rank test was used to compare the cumulative incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in NAs-treated and non-NA streated patients. Results: Baseline liver histology status showed that 58.6% (58/99) patients had obvious liver tissue damage in their baseline liver tissue pathology (G≥2 and /or S≥2). Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that a liver cirrhosis (LC) family history, a HBsAg-positive family history, baseline alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels were positively correlated factors for liver tissue damage. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a LC family history was the main risk factor for liver tissue damage. Twenty-three cases had received a second liver biopsy after an interval of 4.5 years. In 10 untreated cases, the second liver biopsy results showed the rate of obvious liver tissue damage (G≥2 and/ or S≥2) increased from 50.0% to 90.0%. In the other 13 cases who received NAs treatment, the second liver biopsy showed improvement in liver histology, and the rate of obvious liver tissue damage decreased from 61.5% to 46.2%. The 5-year HCC cumulative incidence in non-NAs-treated patients was significantly higher than that of in NAs-treated patients (17.7% vs. 3.8%, P = 0.046). Conclusion: For most HBeAg-negative CHB patients with low viral load, liver tissue pathology result suggests that it meets the indications for antiviral therapy, especially in patients with a LC familial history. Without antiviral therapy, liver tissue damage for these patients will progressively worse with the high incidence of HCC. Therefore, it is suggested that antiviral therapy should be started as soon as possible for the HBeAg-negative CHB patients with low viral load regardless of the alanine aminotransferase level, especially in patients over 30 years-old with a LC or HCC family history.

Determination of Strong-Phase Parameters in D→K_{S,L}^{0}π^{+}π^{-}. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2020; 124:241802. Abstract
We report the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters between D^{0} and D[over ¯]^{0} decays to K_{S,L}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} using a sample of 2.93 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results provide the key inputs for a binned model-independent determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ_{3} with B decays. Using our results, the decay model sensitivity to the γ/ϕ_{3} measurement is expected to be between 0.7° and 1.2°, approximately a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements, based on the studies of the simulated data. The improved precision of this work ensures that measurements of γ/ϕ_{3} will not be limited by knowledge of strong phases for the next decade. Furthermore, our results provide critical input for other flavor-physics investigations, including charm mixing, other measurements of CP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other D-decay modes.

Abstract
Using a total of 11.0 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data with center-of-mass energies between 4.009 and 4.6 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we measure fifteen exclusive cross sections and effective form factors for the process e^{+}e^{-}→Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+} by means of a single baryon-tag method. After performing a fit to the dressed cross section of e^{+}e^{-}→Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+}, no significant ψ(4230) or ψ(4260) resonance is observed in the Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+} final states, and upper limits at the 90% confidence level on Γ_{ee}B for the processes ψ(4230)/ψ(4260)→Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+} are determined. In addition, an excited Ξ baryon at 1820 MeV/c^{2} is observed with a statistical significance of 6.2-6.5σ by including the systematic uncertainty, and the mass and width are measured to be M=(1825.5±4.7±4.7) MeV/c^{2} and Γ=(17.0±15.0±7.9) MeV, which confirms the existence of the J^{P}=3/2^{-} state Ξ(1820).

Abstract
By analyzing a 2.93 fb^{-1} data sample of e^{+}e^{-} collisions, recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we report the first observation of the semileptonic D^{+} transition into the axial-vector meson D^{+}→K[over ¯]_{1}(1270)^{0}e^{+}ν_{e} with a statistical significance greater than 10σ. Its decay branching fraction is determined to be B[D^{+}→K[over ¯]_{1}(1270)^{0}e^{+}ν_{e}]=(2.30±0.26_{-0.21}^{+0.18}±0.25)×10^{-3}, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third originates from the input branching fraction of K[over ¯]_{1}(1270)^{0}→K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}.

Abstract
We report the first observation of D^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ} with a significance of 5.1σ. We measure B(D^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ})=(1.20±0.24_{stat}±0.12_{syst})×10^{-3}. Taking the world average B(D^{+}→μ^{+}ν_{μ})=(3.74±0.17)×10^{-4}, we obtain R_{τ/μ}=Γ(D^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ})/Γ(D^{+}→μ^{+}ν_{μ})=3.21±0.64_{stat}±0.43_{syst}., which is consistent with the standard model expectation of lepton flavor universality. Using external inputs, our results give values for the D^{+} decay constant f_{D^{+}} and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{cd}| that are consistent with, but less precise than, other determinations.

Complete Measurement of the Λ Electromagnetic Form Factors. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:122003. Abstract
The exclusive process e^{+}e^{-}→ΛΛ[over ¯], with Λ→pπ^{-} and Λ[over ¯]→p[over ¯]π^{+}, has been studied at sqrt[s]=2.396 GeV for measurement of the timelike Λ electric and magnetic form factors, G_{E} and G_{M}. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 66.9 pb^{-1}, was collected with the BESIII detector for this purpose. A multidimensional analysis with a complete decomposition of the spin structure of the reaction enables a determination of the modulus of the ratio R=|G_{E}/G_{M}| and, for the first time for any baryon, the relative phase ΔΦ=Φ_{E}-Φ_{M}. The resulting values are R=0.96±0.14(stat)±0.02(syst) and ΔΦ=37°±12°(stat)±6°(syst), respectively. These are obtained using the recently established and most precise value of the asymmetry parameter α_{Λ}=0.750±0.010 measured by BESIII. In addition, the cross section is measured with unprecedented precision to be σ=118.7±5.3(stat)±5.1(syst) pb, which corresponds to an effective form factor of |G|=0.123±0.003(stat)±0.003(syst). The contribution from two-photon exchange is found to be negligible. Our result enables the first complete determination of baryon timelike electromagnetic form factors.

Abstract
We study the e^{+}e^{-}→γωJ/ψ process using 11.6 fb^{-1} e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data taken at center-of-mass energies from sqrt[s]=4.008 GeV to 4.600 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The X(3872) resonance is observed for the first time in the ωJ/ψ system with a significance of more than 5σ. The relative decay ratio of X(3872)→ωJ/ψ and π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ is measured to be R=1.6_{-0.3}^{+0.4}±0.2, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic (the same hereafter). The sqrt[s]-dependent cross section of e^{+}e^{-}→γX(3872) is also measured and investigated, and it can be described by a single Breit-Wigner resonance, referred to as the Y(4200), with a mass of 4200.6_{-13.3}^{+7.9}±3.0 MeV/c^{2} and a width of 115_{-26}^{+38}±12 MeV. In addition, to describe the ωJ/ψ mass distribution above 3.9 GeV/c^{2}, we need at least one additional Breit-Wigner resonance, labeled as X(3915), in the fit. The mass and width of the X(3915) are determined. The resonant parameters of the X(3915) agree with those of the Y(3940) in B→KωJ/ψ and of the X(3915) in γγ→ωJ/ψ observed by the Belle and BABAR experiments within errors.

Abstract
Using a total of 9.0 fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data with center-of-mass energies between 4.15 and 4.30 GeV collected by the BESIII detector, we search for the processes e^{+}e^{-}→γX(3872) with X(3872)→π^{0}χ_{cJ} for J=0, 1, 2. We report the first observation of X(3872)→π^{0}χ_{c1}, a new decay mode of the X(3872), with a statistical significance of more than 5σ for all systematic fit variations. Normalizing to the previously established process e^{+}e^{-}→γX(3872) with X(3872)→π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ, we find B(X(3872)→π^{0}χ_{c1})/B(X(3872)→π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ)=0.88_{-0.27}^{+0.33}±0.10, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the corresponding ratios for the decays to π^{0}χ_{c0} and π^{0}χ_{c2} of 19 and 1.1, respectively.

Abstract
Biomass is abundant and recyclable on the earth, which has been assigned numerous roles to human beings. However, over the past decades, accompanying with the rapid expansion of man-made materials, such as alloy, plastic, synthetic rubber and fiber, a great number of natural materials had been neglected and abandoned, such as straw, which cause a waste of resource and environmental pollution. In this review, based on introducing sources of discarded biomass, the main composition and polymer chains in discarded biomass materials, the traditional treatment and novel approach for reutilization of discarded biomass were summarized. The discarded biomass mainly come from plant wastes generated in the process of agriculture and forestry production and manufacturing processes, animal wastes generated in the process of animal husbandry and fishery production as well as the residual wastes produced in the process of food processing and rural living garbage. Compared with the traditional treatment including burning, landfill, feeding and fertilizer, the novel approach for reutilization of discarded biomass principally allotted to energy, ecology and polymer materials. The prepared functional materials covered in composite materials, biopolymer based adsorbent and flocculant, carrier materials, energy materials, smart polymer materials for medical and other intelligent polymer materials, which can effectively serve the environmental management and human life, such as wastewater treatment, catalyst, new energy, tissue engineering, drug controlled release, and coating. To sum up, the renewable and biodegradable discarded biomass resources play a vital role in the sustainable development of human society, as well as will be put more emphases in the future.

Abstract
Keratin, a typical natural biopolymer, has been applied in the biomedical field due to its biocompatible, eco-friendly, and inexpensive characteristics. In this paper, pig hair keratin (PHK) was pre-treated and efficiently digested by enzyme to afford enzymatically digested pig hair keratin (E-PHK) with short polymer chains. Then, by using methacrylic acid (MAA), as a functional monomer, a novel keratin (E- PHK)-based biopolymer hydrogel (E-PHKPGel) was prepared via grafting copolymerization. It was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The swelling behaviours, salt sensitivity, and release behaviours of E-PHKPGel were also investigated. As a result, the enzymatic digestion method was found to improve the swelling and release properties of PHK. The release behaviours of pH-sensitive E-PHKPGel were controllable by adjustment of the pH value. For the small molecular model drug (rhodamine B), the cumulative release rate was 89 % in 12 h at pH 7.2. For the macromolecular model drug (bovine serum albumin), the cumulative release rate reached 70.7 % in 12 h at pH 7.2. In conclusion, a simple and efficient enzymatic digestion method to PHK has been found. E-PHKPGel is expected to be used in the biomedical field as a sustained drug carrier as well as a humid medicinal material in the clinical nursing field.

Abstract
Using simple one-step carbonization-activation, the residues of paulownia flowers are employed as a precursor to prepare hierarchically porous activated carbon. After investigating the optimum conditions, the obtained paulownia flowers based activated carbon (PFAC) is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area analysis (S(BET)), thermo gravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The PFAC owns a high specific surface area of 1,053 m(2)/g as well as a hierarchically porous structure with a combination of micro-, meso- and macropores. The pore-forming mechanism is discussed according to results of characterization. Using methylene blue as model dye, the adsorption behaviors of PFAC were investigated. We found that the dye could be rapidly adsorbed by hierarchically porous PFAC, and the adsorption capacity of PFAC reached 300 mg/g.

Abstract
Toll-like receptors (TLRs), an important family of pattern-recognition receptors, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) contribute to the first line of innate protection of mammals against microbes. To compare characteristics of innate immunity between Tibetan and Yorkshire pigs, we investigated the mRNA abundance of TLR genes (TLR1-TLR9) and two AMP-encoding genes (PBD-1 and PR-39) in thymus, spleen, blood, palatine tonsils, and mesenteric and pulmonary hilar lymph nodes of the two breeds at ages of 6, 12 and 24 weeks using quantitative real-time PCR. Results showed that all mRNAs were detected in all tissues. Transcript levels of the major TLR genes of Tibetan pigs were significantly higher than those of Yorkshires in most tissues of the immune system, with a higher abundance of porcine (PBD-1) (beta-defensin-1) and PR-39 mRNA in lymphoid organs and tissues, especially blood, palatine tonsils, and mesenteric and pulmonary hilar lymph nodes. Our data suggest that Tibetan pigs have stronger innate immunity for triggering local and/or systemic immune responses to eliminate infections with pathogenic microorganisms.

Abstract
Functional monomers, such as acrylic acid and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate were supported into loess clay in situ polymerization, which afforded loess clay based copolymer (LC/PAAHM), a new kind of polymer adsorbent for removing Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution. Characterization of the polymer adsorbent was carried out by different sophisticated methods, such as Fourier transformation infrared spectrometry (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Zetasizer. Batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the factors affecting the removal efficiency, in which the pH, the adsorbent dosage, temperature and initial Pb(II) concentration all found in positive relevance to the increase of Pb(II) removal efficiency. The removal rate of Pb(II) got to 99% at room temperature and the adsorption capacity got to 356.9 mg/g. The pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were applied to test the experimental data, and Langmuir and Freundlich models have been applied to study the adsorption equilibrium, respectively.

Abstract
Nickel cobalt oxide alloy nanorings have been synthesized using a wet chemistry method. Standard characterization techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to characterize the nanorings. We, however, also examined the nanostructures in the helium ion microscope (HIM) and employed backscattered ion spectroscopy to determine thickness and composition of the nanostructure. The HIM provides complementary information of the nanostructures and the viability of using it as a tool for magnetic nanoparticle characterization was demonstrated by comparing the results from all three microscopes.

Abstract
In this paper, a new kind of poly(acrylic acid) modified clay adsorbent, the poly(acrylic acid)/bentonite composite (PAA/HB) was prepared by in-situ polymerization, and utilized to remove lead(II) ions from solutions. The maximum adsorption of adsorbent is at pH 5 for metal ions, whereas the adsorption starts at pH 2. The effects of contact time (5-60 min), initial concentration of metal ions (200-1,000 mg/L) and adsorbent dosage (0.04-0.12 g/100 mL) have been reported in this article. The experimental data were investigated by means of kinetic and equilibrium adsorption isotherms. The kinetic data were analyzed by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order equation. The experimental data fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model very well. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were tried for the system to better understand the adsorption isotherm process. The maximal adsorption capacity of the lead(II) ions on the PAA/HB, as calculated from the Langmuir model, was 769.2 mg/g. The results in this study indicated that PAA/HB was an attractive candidate for removing lead(II) (99%).

Preparation of xanthated bentonite and its removal behavior for Pb(II) ions. WATER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY : A JOURNAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION ON WATER POLLUTION RESEARCH 2010; 61:1235-1243. Abstract
Xanthate was successfully grafted onto bentonite by a relatively simple solution reaction. The obtained xanthated bentonite (XBent) was characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometer, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), particle size analysis, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XBent acting as a type of environmentally friendly adsorbent was applied to remove lead ions from aqueous solutions. The optimum conditions were as follows: [Pb(2+)] = 500 mg L(-1), [XBent] = 2 g L(-1), pH = 5.0; oscillating 60 min under 200 rpm at 25 degrees C. The removal rate of lead was up to 99.9%. It was found that the lead(II) ions-XBent adsorption isotherm model fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm. The adsorption mechanism was also investigated by SEM and XRD, which concluded that lead ions were complexed or chelated with XBent. XBent appears to have potential to be used later in water treatment as a type of inorganic polymer reagent.

Abstract
A new kind of inorganic polymer flocculant, the solid composite polyferric sulfate (SPFS) was prepared using ferrous sulfate and Na-Bentonite. The obtained SPFS was characterized by FT-IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). It showed that SPFS was a kind of composite inorganic polymer, which was the complex of PFS and Na-Bent, not only a simple mixture of raw materials. The synthetic mechanism and surface structure of SPFS were also discussed. Acting as a kind of environment-friendly flocculating agent, the solid composite polyferric sulfate (SPFS) was applied in pretreatment of potato starch industry wastewater, a typical wastewater containing high concentration organic compounds, which COD was above 6,000 mg/L. The results showed that the COD removal value reached 4,070 mg/L with COD removal rates being 46.6%. Based on these results, it is suggested that the SPFS can be attractive pretreatment agent for the starch industry wastewater.

Abstract
A dense titania film is fabricated in situ on NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) by anodic oxidation in a Na(2)SO(4) electrolyte. The microstructure of the titania film and its influence on the biocompatibility of NiTi SMA are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS), hemolysis analysis, and platelet adhesion test. The results indicate that the titania film has a Ni-free zone near the surface and can effectively block the release of harmful Ni ions from the NiTi substrate in simulated body fluids. Moreover, the wettability, hemolysis resistance, and thromboresistance of the NiTi sample are improved by this anodic oxidation method.

Abstract
The periodic shell structure and surface reconstruction of metallic FePt nanoparticles with icosahedral structure has been quantitatively studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with focal series reconstruction with sub-angstrom resolution. The icosahedral FePt nanoparticles fabricated by the gas phase condensation technique in vacuum have been found to be surprisingly oxidation resistant and stable under electron beam irradiation. We find the lattice spacing of (111) planes in the surface region to be size dependent and to expand by as much as 9% with respect to the bulk value of Fe52Pt48. Controlled removal of the (111) surface layers in situ results in a similar outward relaxation of the new surface layer. This unusually large layerwise outward relaxation is discussed in terms of preferential Pt segregation to the surface forming a Pt enriched shell around a Fe-rich Fe/Pt core.

Photosensitized Reduction of Water to Hydrogen Using Human Serum Albumin Complexed with Zinc−Protoporphyrin IX. J Am Chem Soc 2006; 128:16297-301. Abstract
We present the photophysical properties of complexes of recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA) with Zn(II)-protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP) and their activities in the photosensitized reduction of water to hydrogen (H2) using methyl viologen (MV2+) as an electron relay. The ZnPP is bound in subdomain IB of wild-type rHSA [rHSA(wt] by an axial coordination of Tyr-161 and, in the rHSA(I142H/Y161L) mutant [rHSA(His], by a His-142 coordination. Both the rHSA(wt)-ZnPP and rHSA(His)-ZnPP complexes showed a long-lived photoexcited triplet state with lifetimes (tauT) of 11 and 2.5 ms, respectively. The accommodation of ZnPP into the protein matrix efficiently eliminated the collisional triplet self-quenching process. The addition of a water-soluble electron acceptor, MV2+, resulted in a significant decrease in the triplet lifetime. The transition absorption spectrum revealed the oxidative quenching of rHSA-3ZnPP* by MV2+. The quenching rate constant (kq) and backward electron transfer rate constant (kb) were determined to be 1.4 x 10(7) and 4.7 x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1) for rHSA(wt)-ZnPP. In the presence of the colloidal PVA-Pt as a catalyst and triethanolamine (TEOA) as a sacrificial electron donor, the photosensitized reduction of water to H2 takes place. The efficiency of the photoproduction of H2 was greater than that of the system using the well-known organic chromophore, tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphinatozinc(II) (ZnTMPyP4+), under the same conditions.

Poly(ethylene glycol)-Conjugated Human Serum Albumin Including Iron Porphyrins: Surface Modification Improves the O2-Transporting Ability. Bioconjug Chem 2006; 17:393-8. Abstract
Artificial O2-carrying hemoprotein composed of human serum albumin including tetrakis(o-amidophenyl)porphinatoiron(II) (Fe4P or Fe3P) [HSA-FeXP] has been modified by maleimide- or succinimide-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and the formed PEG bioconjugates have been physicochemically characterized. 2-Iminothiolane (IMT) reacted with the amino groups of Lys to create active thiol groups, which bind to alpha-maleimide-omega-methoxy PEG [Mw: 2-kDa (PEG(M2)), 5-kDa (PEG(M5))]. On the other hand, alpha-succinimidyl-omega-methoxy PEG [Mw: 2-kDa (PEG(S2)), 5-kDa (PEG(S5))] directly binds to Lys residues. MALDI-TOF MS of the PEG-conjugated HSA-FeXP showed distinct molecular ion peaks, which provide an accurate number of the PEG chains. In the case of PEG(MY)(HSA-FeXP), the spectroscopic assay of the thiol groups also provided the mean of the binding numbers of the polymers, and the degree of the modification was controlled by the ratio of [IMT]/[HSA]. The viscosity and colloid osmotic pressures of the 2-kDa PEG conjugates (phosphate-buffered saline solution, [HSA] = 5 g dL(-1)) were almost the same as that of the nonmodified one, whereas the 5-kDa PEG binding increased the rheological parameters. The presence of flexible polymers on the HSA surface retarded the association reaction of O2 to FeXP and stabilized the oxygenated complex. Furthermore, PEG(MY)(HSA-FeXP) exhibited a long circulation lifetime of FeXP in rats (13-16 h). On the basis of these results, it can be concluded that the surface modification of HSA-FeXP by PEG has improved its comprehensive O2-transporting ability. In particular the PEG(MY)(HSA-FeXP) solution could be a promising material for entirely synthetic O2-carrying plasma expander as a red cell substitute.

Human serum albumin bearing covalently attached iron(II) porphyrins as O2-coordination sites. Bioconjug Chem 2005; 16:23-6. Abstract
Tetrakis{(alpha,alpha,alpha,alpha-o-pivalamido)phenyl}porphinatoiron(II) with a bifunctional tail possessing an axially coordinated imidazolyl group and a protein attachable succinimidyl(glutamyl) group (FeP-GluSu) has been synthesized. It can efficiently react with the lysine residues of recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA), giving a new albumin-heme conjugate [rHSA(FeP-Glu)]. MALDI-TOFMS showed a distinct molecular ion peak at m/z 70 643, which indicates that three FeP-Glu molecules were covalently linked to the rHSA scaffold. The binding number of FeP-Glu is approximately three (mol/mol) and independent of the mixing ratio. The CD spectrum and Native PAGE revealed that the albumin structure remained unaltered after the covalent bonding of the hemes. This rHSA(FeP-Glu) conjugate can bind and release O2 reversibly under physiological conditions (pH 7.3, 37 degrees C) in the same manner as hemoglobin and myoglobin. The O2-adduct complex had a remarkably long lifetime (tau(1/2): 5 h). The O2-binding affinity [P(1/2)O2: 27 Torr] was identical to that of human red cells. Laser flash photolysis experiments gave the O2- and CO-association rate constants and suggested that there are two different geometries of the imidazole binding to the central ion.
