Abstract
The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay half-life in ^{136}Xe using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of ^{136}Xe. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>2.3×10^{26} yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36-156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations.

Joint instability causes catabolic enzyme production in chondrocytes prior to synovial cells in novel non-invasive ACL ruptured mouse model. Osteoarthritis Cartilage 2022; 31:576-587. [PMID: 36528308 DOI: 10.1016/j.joca.2022.12.004] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/15/2022] [Revised: 11/07/2022] [Accepted: 12/07/2022] [Indexed: 12/23/2022]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)-deficient model helps to clarify the mechanism of knee osteoarthritis (OA); however, the conventional ACL injury model could have included concurrent onset factors such as direct compression stress to cartilage and subchondral bone. In this study, we established a novel Non-invasive ACL-Ruptured mouse model without concurrent injuries and elucidated the relationship between OA progression and joint instability. DESIGN We induced the ACL-Rupture non-invasively in twelve-week-old C57BL/6 male mice and evaluated histological, macroscopical, and morphological analysis at 0 days. Next, we created the ACL-R, controlled abnormal tibial translation (CATT), and Sham groups. Then, the joint stability and OA pathophysiology were analyzed at 2, 4, and 8 weeks. RESULTS No intra-articular injuries, except for ACL rupture, were observed in the ACL-R model. ACL-R mice increased anterior tibial displacement compared to the Sham group (P < 0.001, 95% CI [-1.509 to -0.966]) and CATT group (P < 0.001, 95% CI [-0.841 to -0.298]) at 8 weeks. All mice in the ACL-R group caused cartilage degeneration. The degree of cartilage degeneration in the ACL-R group was higher than in the CATT group (P = 0.006) at 8 weeks. The MMP-3-positive cell rate of chondrocytes increased in the ACL-R group than CATT group from 4 weeks (P = 0.043; 95% CI [-28.32 to -0.364]) while that of synovial cells increased at 8 weeks (P = 0.031; 95% CI [-23.398 to -1.021]). CONCLUSION We successfully established a Non-invasive ACL-R model without intra-articular damage. Our model revealed that chondrocytes might react to abnormal mechanical stress prior to synovial cells while the knee OA onset.

Acute effects of dermal suctioning on back pain in racehorses: a pilot study. COMPARATIVE EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY 2022. Abstract
Back pain is a common clinical condition that leads to poor performance in racehorses. Therefore, horse owners would benefit from a suitable and effective treatment that results in the early recovery of their horses. Dermal suctioning significantly improves chronic lower back pain in humans. Thus, if a similar effect were to be found in racehorses, it could become a new treatment for back pain in horses. In this study, we examined the acute effects of dermal suctioning on back pain in racehorses. Twelve Thoroughbred racehorses with back pain underwent 10 min of dermal suctioning in the thoracolumbar region. The pain score, mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT), heart rate variability (HRV), and plasma cortisol concentrations were measured. Results showed that pain scores were significantly improved immediately after dermal suctioning (P=0.028), while MNT, HRV, and plasma cortisol concentrations did not show significant changes (P>0.05). These results indicate that dermal suctioning immediately relieves pain but has a limited effect on the other three parameters.

New Constraint on the Local Relic Neutrino Background Overdensity with the First KATRIN Data Runs. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 129:011806. Abstract
We report on the direct search for cosmic relic neutrinos using data acquired during the first two science campaigns of the KATRIN experiment in 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity molecular tritium gas source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter around the end point at 18.57 keV. The analysis is sensitive to a local relic neutrino overdensity ratio of η<9.7×10^{10}/α (1.1×10^{11}/α) at a 90% (95%) confidence level with α=1 (0.5) for Majorana (Dirac) neutrinos. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the end point accounting for relic neutrino captures in the tritium source reveals no significant overdensity. This work improves the results obtained by the previous neutrino mass experiments at Los Alamos and Troitsk. We furthermore update the projected final sensitivity of the KATRIN experiment to η<1×10^{10}/α at 90% confidence level, by relying on updated operational conditions.

The difference in joint instability affects the onset of cartilage degeneration or subchondral bone changes. Osteoarthritis Cartilage 2022; 30:451-460. Abstract
OBJECTIVE It has been debated whether the onset of knee osteoarthritis is initiated in cartilage or subchondral bone. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of increasing or decreasing joint instability on cartilage degeneration and subchondral bone changes in knee OA by comparing different models of joint instability. DESIGN We used the anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACL-T) model and the destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) model. In addition, we created a controlled abnormal tibial translation (CATT) model and a controlled abnormal tibial rotation (CATR) model. We performed joint instability analysis, micro-computed tomography analysis, histological and immunohistological analysis in 4 and 6 weeks. RESULTS The CATT group suppressed joint instability in the ACL-T group (6 weeks; P = 0.032), and the CATR group suppressed joint instability in the DMM group (6 weeks; P = 0.032). Chondrocyte hypertrophy in the ACL-T and DMM groups was increased compared to the Sham group (6 weeks; [ACL-T vs Sham], P = 0.002, 95%CI [5.983-33.025]; [DMM vs Sham], P = 0.022, 95%CI [1.691-28.733]). In the subchondral bone, the BV/TV in the DMM and CATR groups was increased compared to the ACL-T and CATT groups (6 weeks; [DMM vs ACL-T], P = 0.002, 95%CI [7.404-37.582]; [DMM vs CATT], P = 0.014, 95%CI [2.881-33.059]; [CATR vs ACL-T], P = 0.006, 95%CI [4.615-34.793]; [CATR vs CATT], P = 0.048, 95%CI [0.092-30.270]). CONCLUSIONS This study showed that joint instability promotes chondrocyte hypertrophy, but subchondral bone changes were influenced by differences in ACL and meniscus function.

Abstract
We report on the light sterile neutrino search from the first four-week science run of the KATRIN experiment in 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter down to 40 eV below the endpoint at 18.57 keV. We consider the framework with three active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino. The analysis is sensitive to the mass, m_{4}, of the fourth mass state for m_{4}^{2}≲1000 eV^{2} and to active-to-sterile neutrino mixing down to |U_{e4}|^{2}≳2×10^{-2}. No significant spectral distortion is observed and exclusion bounds on the sterile mass and mixing are reported. These new limits supersede the Mainz results for m_{4}^{2}≲1000 eV^{2} and improve the Troitsk bound for m_{4}^{2}<30 eV^{2}. The reactor and gallium anomalies are constrained for 100<Δm_{41}^{2}<1000 eV^{2}.

Abstract
We report on the neutrino mass measurement result from the first four-week science run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment KATRIN in spring 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are energy analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the kinematic end point at 18.57 keV gives an effective neutrino mass square value of (-1.0_{-1.1}^{+0.9}) eV^{2}. From this, we derive an upper limit of 1.1 eV (90% confidence level) on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. This value coincides with the KATRIN sensitivity. It improves upon previous mass limits from kinematic measurements by almost a factor of 2 and provides model-independent input to cosmological studies of structure formation.

Precision Analysis of the ^{136}Xe Two-Neutrino ββ Spectrum in KamLAND-Zen and Its Impact on the Quenching of Nuclear Matrix Elements. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 122:192501. Abstract
We present a precision analysis of the ^{136}Xe two-neutrino ββ electron spectrum above 0.8 MeV, based on high-statistics data obtained with the KamLAND-Zen experiment. An improved formalism for the two-neutrino ββ rate allows us to measure the ratio of the leading and subleading 2νββ nuclear matrix elements (NMEs), ξ_{31}^{2ν}=-0.26_{-0.25}^{+0.31}. Theoretical predictions from the nuclear shell model and the majority of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) calculations are consistent with the experimental limit. However, part of the ξ_{31}^{2ν} range allowed by the QRPA is excluded by the present measurement at the 90% confidence level. Our analysis reveals that predicted ξ_{31}^{2ν} values are sensitive to the quenching of NMEs and the competing contributions from low- and high-energy states in the intermediate nucleus. Because these aspects are also at play in neutrinoless ββ decay, ξ_{31}^{2ν} provides new insights toward reliable neutrinoless ββ NMEs.

Abstract
A new synthesis method, "chloride flux growth in the rigid nanospace of mesoporous silica", was developed to obtain lithium niobium oxide anisotropic nanoparticles. The morphologies reflect the pore size and shape of the used mesoporous silicas. This method has great potential for synthesizing size-tuned anisotropic nanoparticles of other complex metal oxides.

Abstract
The thickness of 3-dimensional (3D) mesoporous silica ultrathin films was controlled at a single-nanometer scale by wet-etching. A drop casting method with an aqueous etchant of ammonium fluoride was effective in etching the surfaces of films in the direction perpendicular to their substrates. The decrease in the film thickness depends on the interface tension of etching solutions. The wettability of thin films also influences the etching. CoPt nanodots were electrodeposited within ultrathin silica films on Ru substrates to form CoPt nanodot patterns.

Abstract
We present an improved search for neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay of ^{136}Xe in the KamLAND-Zen experiment. Owing to purification of the xenon-loaded liquid scintillator, we achieved a significant reduction of the ^{110m}Ag contaminant identified in previous searches. Combining the results from the first and second phase, we obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>1.07×10^{26} yr at 90% C.L., an almost sixfold improvement over previous limits. Using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations, the corresponding upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass are in the range 61-165 meV. For the most optimistic nuclear matrix elements, this limit reaches the bottom of the quasidegenerate neutrino mass region.

Preparation of Mesoporous Bimetallic Au-Pt with a Phase-Segregated Heterostructure Using Mesoporous Silica. Chemistry 2015; 21:19142-8. Abstract
Mesoporous bimetallic Au-Pt with a phase-segregated heterostructure has been prepared by using mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a template. Au nanoparticles were prepared as a seed metal within the mesopores, and subsequently Pt was deposited, sandwiching the Au seeds. Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectral mapping showed that the framework of mesoporous bimetallic Au-Pt, prepared by removing the silica template with HF, was composed of Au nanoparticles joined with Pt nanowires. The Au/Pt ratio of the mesoporous bimetallic Au-Pt could be varied by controlling the number of Au deposition cycles. Pre-adsorbed CO (COad) stripping voltammetry of the mesoporous bimetallic Au-Pt showed that the surfaces of the joined bimetallic structure were electrochemically active. This could be attributed to the open framework structure having a high ratio of exposed bimetallic mesopore surfaces. The described preparative approach, involving a mesoporous silica template and stepwise deposition within the mesopores, enables control of the nanostructure of the bimetallic material, which is greatly promising for the further development of synthetic methodologies for bimetallic structures.

Limit on neutrinoless ββ decay of 136Xe from the first phase of KamLAND-Zen and comparison with the positive claim in 76Ge. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2013; 110:062502. Abstract
We present results from the first phase of the KamLAND-Zen double-beta decay experiment, corresponding to an exposure of 89.5 kg yr of (136)Xe. We obtain a lower limit for the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of T(1/2)(0ν)>1.9×10(25) yr at 90% C.L. The combined results from KamLAND-Zen and EXO-200 give T(1/2)(0ν)>3.4×10(25) yr at 90% C.L., which corresponds to a Majorana neutrino mass limit of <m(ββ)> <(120-250) meV based on a representative range of available matrix element calculations. Using those calculations, this result excludes the Majorana neutrino mass range expected from the neutrinoless double-beta decay detection claim in (76)Ge, reported by a part of the Heidelberg-Moscow Collaboration, at more than 97.5% C.L.

Abstract
A Globosus amorphus along with a living calf was encountered following the transfer of blastocysts obtained by in vitro fertilization of in vitro-matured follicular oocytes in Japanese black cattle. Two embryos obtained 9 days after in vitro fertilization developed into either a hatched blastocyst with distinct inner cell mass or an expanded blastocyst with indistinct inner cell mass. The embryos were loaded into a 0.25-ml plastic straw and were nonsurgically transferred to the uterus of a heifer on Day 8 (Day 0 = estrus). On Day 75, a twin pregnancy was ultrasonically diagnosed in the right uterine horn, in which a live fetus with distinct limbs and a concomitant ovoid mass were detected. On Day 287, the dam developed parturient paralysis with dropsy of the fetal membranes. By palpation per rectum an ovoid mass was detected in the body of the uterus [corpus uteri] and a larger live fetus was in the uterine horn. A cesarean section was performed to extract a live fetus and a Globosus amorphus. The live fetus was female with the 60, XX female complements.

AbstractTrivalent actinides Am(III), Cm(III), and Cf(III) were successfully separated for the first time using capillary electrophoresis in 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid/acetic acid. It was found that the ionic radius was primarily important for separation of trivalent actinides as well as lanthanides in this condition. The stability constants of the Am(III) complexes with 2-hydroxyisobutyrate were estimated using the correlations between the molar fraction ratio of lanthanides and their ionic radii.

Abstract
Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm is a rare complication of myocardial infarction. However, the risk of rupture and heart failure are high, especially in a case of rapidly expanding aneurysm. As for left ventricular pseudoaneurysm, the risk of operation is high, and the long-term results are not good. We experienced 2 cases The 1st case was lost due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia The 2nd case is alive and has been free from heart failure for 3 years. The early diagnosis and surgery is necessary for a pseudoaneurysm.

Abstract
Summary
Irrespective of low bioavailability, some plant species accumulate Y and rare earth elements (REEs) to a great extent (accumulator species). The uptake mechanisms of Y and REEs were investigated for autumn fern, one of accumulator species. For comparison, plant species which accumulated poorly REEs (non-accumulator species) were also studied. In the present investigation, two noticeable phenomena were observed. (I) Autumn fern showed no ionic-radius dependence of Y-REE uptake by leaves, while non-accumulator species showed an extremely high uptake for Y compared with REEs. (II) Y-REE uptake by autumn fern was influenced by the addition of chelating reagents to the uptake solution, while no effect was observed for non-accumulator species.

Abstract
Cryptosporidium is one of the most common enteric protozoan parasites of vertebrates with a wide host range that includes humans and domestic animals. It is a significant cause of diarrhoeal disease and an ubiquitous contaminant of water which serves as an excellent vehicle for transmission. A better understanding of the development and life cycle of Cryptosporidium, and new insights into its phylogenetic relationships, have illustrated the need to re-evaluate many aspects of the biology of Cryptosporidium. This has been reinforced by information obtained from the recent successful Cryptosporidium genome sequencing project, which has emphasised the uniqueness of this organism in terms of its parasite life style and evolutionary biology. This chapter provides an up to date review of the biology, biochemistry and host parasite relationships of Cryptosporidium.

Abstract
The KamLAND experiment has determined a precise value for the neutrino oscillation parameter Deltam21(2) and stringent constraints on theta12. The exposure to nuclear reactor antineutrinos is increased almost fourfold over previous results to 2.44 x 10(32) proton yr due to longer livetime and an enlarged fiducial volume. An undistorted reactor nu[over]e energy spectrum is now rejected at >5sigma. Analysis of the reactor spectrum above the inverse beta decay energy threshold, and including geoneutrinos, gives a best fit at Deltam21(2)=7.58(-0.13)(+0.14)(stat) -0.15+0.15(syst) x 10(-5) eV2 and tan2theta12=0.56(-0.07)+0.10(stat) -0.06+0.10(syst). Local Deltachi2 minima at higher and lower Deltam21(2) are disfavored at >4sigma. Combining with solar neutrino data, we obtain Deltam21(2)=7.59(-0.21)+0.21 x 10(-5) eV2 and tan2theta12=0.47(-0.05)+0.06.

Abstract
The Kamioka Liquid scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector is used in a search for single neutron or two-neutron intranuclear disappearance that would produce holes in the -shell energy level of (12)C nuclei. Such holes could be created as a result of nucleon decay into invisible modes (inv), e.g., n--> 3v or nn--> 2v. The deexcitation of the corresponding daughter nucleus results in a sequence of space and time-correlated events observable in the liquid scintillator detector. We report on new limits for one- and two-neutron disappearance: tau(n--> inv) > 5.8 x 10(29) years and tau (nn--> inv) > 1.4 x 10(30) years at 90% C.L. These results represent an improvement of factors of approximately 3 and >10(4) and over previous experiments.

Abstract
The detection of electron antineutrinos produced by natural radioactivity in the Earth could yield important geophysical information. The Kamioka liquid scintillator antineutrino detector (KamLAND) has the sensitivity to detect electron antineutrinos produced by the decay of 238U and 232Th within the Earth. Earth composition models suggest that the radiogenic power from these isotope decays is 16 TW, approximately half of the total measured heat dissipation rate from the Earth. Here we present results from a search for geoneutrinos with KamLAND. Assuming a Th/U mass concentration ratio of 3.9, the 90 per cent confidence interval for the total number of geoneutrinos detected is 4.5 to 54.2. This result is consistent with the central value of 19 predicted by geophysical models. Although our present data have limited statistical power, they nevertheless provide by direct means an upper limit (60 TW) for the radiogenic power of U and Th in the Earth, a quantity that is currently poorly constrained.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of microbubble destruction with ultrasound (MB) combined with bone marrow derived mononuclear cell transplantation (BMT) into ischaemic tissues in rat hind limb ischaemia. METHODS AND RESULTS Unilateral hind limb ischaemia was surgically induced in Lewis rats. At postoperative day 7, rats were randomly divided into three groups: a vehicle treated group, an ultrasound treated group, and an MB treated group. MB treatment increased vascular endothelial growth factor mRNA as assessed by real time polymerase chain reaction (3.0-fold, p < 0.05). At four weeks, the MB group had increases in laser Doppler blood flow index (LDBFI; 1.2-fold, p < 0.05), angiographically detectable collateral vessels (angiographic score: 1.4-fold, p < 0.01), and capillary to muscle fibre ratio (1.4-fold, p < 0.01) in ischaemic limbs compared with the vehicle treated group. No differences were seen between the vehicle and ultrasound treated groups. Secondly, rats were allocated to vehicle treatment, BMT (5 x 10(6) cells/rat), or a combination of MB and BMT (MB+BMT) at seven days after hind limb ischaemia. BMT treatment significantly increased LDBFI, angiographic score, and capillary to muscle fibre ratio compared with vehicle treatment. Interestingly, MB+BMT treatment produced significantly greater LDBFI (1.2-fold, p < 0.01), angiographic score (1.5-fold, p < 0.01), and capillary to muscle fibre ratio (1.5-fold, p < 0.05) than BMT treatment alone. CONCLUSIONS MB may be a useful technique to enhance BMT induced neovascularisation.

Effects of eplerenone on transcriptional factors and mRNA expression related to cardiac remodelling after myocardial infarction. Heart 2005; 91:1595-600. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of eplerenone, a selective aldosterone blocker, on cardiac function after myocardial infarction (MI) and myocardial remodelling related transcriptional factors and mRNA expression in non-infarcted myocardium. METHODS MI was induced by ligation of the coronary artery in Wistar rats. Rats were randomly assigned to a vehicle treated group or an eplerenone treated group (100 mg/kg/day). RESULTS At four weeks after MI, left ventricular (LV) end diastolic pressure, LV weight, and LV end diastolic dimension were increased in MI rats. Eplerenone significantly reduced the increase in LV end diastolic pressure, LV weight, and LV end diastolic dimension. In the MI rats the decreased ejection fraction indicated systolic dysfunction and the increased E wave to A wave ratio and E deceleration rate indicated diastolic dysfunction. Eplerenone significantly attenuated this systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Myocardial interstitial fibrosis, transcriptional activities of activator protein 1 and nuclear factor kappaB, and mRNA expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, atrial natriuretic peptide, brain natriuretic peptide, and collagen types I and III were significantly increased at four weeks after MI. Eplerenone significantly attenuated interstitial fibrosis and suppressed transcriptional activity and mRNA expression of these genes. CONCLUSIONS When administered after MI, eplerenone prevents cardiac remodelling accompanied by systolic and diastolic dysfunction and inhibits abnormal myocardial transcriptional activities and gene expression.

Abstract
We present results of a study of neutrino oscillation based on a 766 ton/year exposure of KamLAND to reactor antineutrinos. We observe 258 nu (e) candidate events with energies above 3.4 MeV compared to 365.2+/-23.7 events expected in the absence of neutrino oscillation. Accounting for 17.8+/-7.3 expected background events, the statistical significance for reactor nu (e) disappearance is 99.998%. The observed energy spectrum disagrees with the expected spectral shape in the absence of neutrino oscillation at 99.6% significance and prefers the distortion expected from nu (e) oscillation effects. A two-neutrino oscillation analysis of the KamLAND data gives Deltam(2)=7.9(+0.6)(-0.5)x10(-5) eV(2). A global analysis of data from KamLAND and solar-neutrino experiments yields Deltam(2)=7.9(+0.6)(-0.5)x10(-5) eV(2) and tan((2)theta=0.40(+0.10)(-0.07), the most precise determination to date.

Different mixtures of sodium hyaluronate and their ability to create submucosal fluid cushions for endoscopic mucosal resection. Endoscopy 2004; 36:584-9. [PMID: 15243879 DOI: 10.1055/s-2004-814524] [Citation(s) in RCA: 107] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/07/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Sodium hyaluronate (SH) is a promising submucosal injection solution during endoscopic mucosal resection, but its high cost is an obstacle to more widespread use. The aim of this study was to identify an appropriate low-cost SH solution by varying the molecular weight of SH and mixing various solutions with it. MATERIALS AND METHODS The viscoelasticity of various SH solutions was first measured. The concentrations of two 1 % SH preparations with different molecular weights (800 kDa and 1900 kDa) were adjusted to 0.5 %, 0.25 %, and 0.125 %, using 0.9 %/3.75 % normal saline (NS), 5 %/20 % dextrose water (DW), and a glycerin solution (Glyceol): 10 % glycerin with 0.9 % normal saline plus 5 % fructose. The ability of these SH solutions to create submucosal fluid cushions (SFCs) was then investigated in the stomachs of two live minipigs. RESULTS The 0.25 % 1900 kDa SH/NS solution and the 0.125 % 1900 kDa SH/20 % DW solution created a similar viscoelasticity to that of the 0.5 % 800 kDa SH/NS solution. The ability of these solutions to create SFCs was also similar. In addition, the 0.125 % 1900 kDa SH/Glyceol solution created similar SFCs, with a synergistic effect of increased viscoelasticity and the hypertonic nature of glycerin. CONCLUSIONS A mixture of higher molecular weight sodium hyaluronate with a sugar solution (particularly 20 % dextrose), with or without glycerin, should be regarded as a cost-effective option for creating SFCs instead of the conventional SH solution made with the same amount of a 1 % 800 kDa SH preparation and normal saline.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS One of the major complications of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for gastrointestinal tumors is perforation, and the most effective way of preventing perforation is to elevate the lesion sufficiently by endoscopic injection of fluid into the submucosa. MATERIALS AND METHODS In order to compare the lesion-lifting properties of several different solutions, 1 ml of each of the following solutions was injected into the submucosa of the resected porcine stomach: normal saline, 3.75 % NaCl, 20 % dextrose water, 10 % glycerin with 0.9 % NaCl plus 5 % fructose, and two sodium hyaluronate (SH) solutions. RESULTS Significantly higher initial elevation was produced by both SH solutions, and it remained higher than that achieved by the other solutions at all times. Hypertonic solutions, especially 10 % glycerin with 0.9 % NaCl plus 5 % fructose, tended to produce and maintain greater mucosal elevation than normal saline, but the difference was not significant. CONCLUSIONS SH solutions were the most suitable ones for producing and maintaining long-term mucosal elevation, while the superiority of hypertonic solutions over normal saline was not clearly demonstrated.

Abstract
A 66-year-old man with left main trunk disease was treated under a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction based on coronary angiography by off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB). About 1 month after operation, his renal function deteriorated and purpura appeared on both feet, especially at the toe tips. In this case, steroid therapy was performed and the patient survived. Cholesterol embolism rarely occurs after angiographic procedure or cardiovascular surgery. In general, it is associated with high morbidity and mortality, but no optimal treatment has yet been developed. This underlines the importance of careful observation and skin biopsy for early diagnosis.

Abstract
Data corresponding to a KamLAND detector exposure of 0.28 kton yr has been used to search for nu;(e)'s in the energy range 8.3<E(nu;(e))<14.8 MeV. No candidates were found for an expected background of 1.1+/-0.4 events. This result can be used to obtain a limit on nu;(e) fluxes of any origin. Assuming that all nu;(e) flux has its origin in the Sun and has the characteristic 8B solar nu(e) energy spectrum, we obtain an upper limit of 3.7 x 10(2) cm(-2) s(-1) (90% C.L.) on the nu;(e) flux. We interpret this limit, corresponding to 2.8 x 10(-4) of the standard solar model 8B nu(e) flux, in the framework of spin-flavor precession and neutrino decay models.

Abstract
Oncocytoma is a rare salivary gland tumour consisting of oncocytes with many hyperplastic mitochondria. It usually occurs in the parotid gland. Because the features of oncocytoma resemble those of other benign and low-grade-malignant salivary gland tumours, clinical diagnosis is often challenging. This report presents the pathologic and imaging findings of an oncocytoma arising in the deep lobe of the left parotid gland in a 66-year-old man. Oncocytoma was diagnosed on the basis of histological, magnetic resonance imaging, and scintigraphic findings. The tumour showed accumulation of technetium-99m pertechnetate and decreased signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance images.

Prefabrication of vascularized bone flap induced by recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2). Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg 2003; 32:508-14. Abstract
An experimental model for the prefabrication of a vascularized bone flap was developed in this study. To form vascularized bone in the desired configuration and to increase the survival rate of the grafted bone, a muscle vascularized pedicle (MVP) was transformed into vascularized bone by the inducer recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2). The muscle flap (8 x 8 mm) raised on saphenous vessels in the rat thigh was sandwiched between same-size collagen (Terudermis) sheets in the presence or absence of impregnated 25 microg of rhBMP-2 for the experimental group and the control group, respectively. The flaps were harvested 1, 2 and 3 weeks postoperatively. Bone transformation was detected by gross examination, radiology, and histologic testing. No evidence of muscle tissue transformation was found in control flaps, whereas all of the experimental flaps produced new bone. Saphenous vessels were observed to supply the new bone upon harvesting, and the newly formed vascularized bone showed good configuration with shape of the Terudermis sheet. This study indicates that this model of effective bone reconstruction could be potentially applied in a therapeutic setting.

Abstract
KamLAND has measured the flux of nu;(e)'s from distant nuclear reactors. We find fewer nu;(e) events than expected from standard assumptions about nu;(e) propagation at the 99.95% C.L. In a 162 ton.yr exposure the ratio of the observed inverse beta-decay events to the expected number without nu;(e) disappearance is 0.611+/-0.085(stat)+/-0.041(syst) for nu;(e) energies >3.4 MeV. In the context of two-flavor neutrino oscillations with CPT invariance, all solutions to the solar neutrino problem except for the "large mixing angle" region are excluded.

Abstract
Preferential orientation of biological apatite (Ap) crystallites in typical calcified tissues of rabbit ulna, rabbit skull, and monkey dentulous mandible was investigated using a microbeam X-ray diffractometer, with a beam spot of 100 microm in diameter, to clarify relationship between the Ap orientation and mechanical function. Preferential alignment of the c-axis of the biological Ap was evaluated by the relative intensity between (002) and (310) diffraction peaks. Preferential alignment of biological Ap in each calcified tissue varied depending on the shape and stress condition in vivo; that is, the c-axes of biological Ap in the rabbit ulna and the rabbit skull bone were preferentially observed as a one-dimensional orientation along the longitudinal axis and a two-dimensional orientation along the surface, respectively. Precise analysis of the preferential alignment along the skull surface showed an elliptical distribution of the c-axis of biological Ap elongating along the suture inside the skull surface of both lamina exterior and interior. The c-axis of biological Ap in a monkey dentulous mandible basically aligned along the mesiodistal direction in the flat bone, but this alignment changed along the normal direction to the flat bone surface parallel to the biting direction near the tooth, due to the force of mastication. It was concluded that the microscale measurement of biological Ap texture is one of the useful new methods for evaluating mechanical function and stress distribution in vivo in calcified tissues.
