Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effect of various rotational motions on the torque/force generation, surface wear, and shaping ability of the ProGlider glide path instrument (Dentsply Sirona). METHODOLOGY Mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals of mandibular molars were selected based on the canal volume, length, angle of curvature (25°-40°), and radius of curvature (4-8 mm) after micro-computed tomographic scanning. The samples were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 13, each) according to movement kinematics [continuous rotation (CR; 300 rpm), optimum torque reverse motion (OTR; 180° forward and 90° reverse when torque > 0.4 N·cm), time-dependent reciprocal motion (TmR; 180° forward and 90° reverse), and optimum glide path motion (OGP; a combination of 90° forward, 90° reverse, 90° forward, and 120° reverse)]. Instrumentation was performed with an automated root canal instrument and torque/force analysing device. Maximum torque/force values, canal volume changes, and canal-centring ratios at 1, 3, 5, and 7 mm were evaluated. Surface defects (pits, grooves, microcracks, blunt cutting edges, and disruption of cutting edges) and spiral distortion on the ProGlider instrument were scored at the tip and 5 mm short of the tip before and after five consecutive uses with scanning electron microscopy. The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn's post-test with Bonferroni correction and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to analyse the data (α = 0.05). RESULTS OGP generated significantly less clockwise torque and greater upward force than other groups (P < 0.05). OGP resulted in significantly fewer surface defects than CR (P < 0.05). In OGP and CR, the tip exhibited more surface defects than 5 mm short of the tip (P < 0.05). CR resulted in greater volume changes than OGP and TmR (P < 0.05) and greater centring ratios (i.e., more deviation) than OGP at 1 mm and OTR at 3 mm (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Under laboratory conditions using the ProGlider instrument, OGP generated significantly less clockwise torque and greater upward force than the other rotatory motions. OGP generated fewer superficial defects than CR, and the three modes of reciprocal rotation better maintained the apical curvature of root canals than CR with the ProGlider instrument.

Abstract
Although the role of laparoscopic nephrectomy (LN) has been established, few studies have reported cases of LN in individuals with scoliosis. Here we report a case of right LN in a patient with severe right convex scoliosis. A 26-year-old man presented with a fever. His medical history comprised severe right convex lumbar scoliosis. CT revealed right hydronephrosis and right kidney stones. Pyelonephritis requiring nephrectomy was diagnosed. Right LN was feasible with elaborate perioperative care. The postoperative course was uneventful with no relapse of urinary tract infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to examine factors of nocturnal polyuria and blood pressure variability in male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) who were treated. METHODS Two hundred and forty-two male patients with LUTS who were treated recorded frequency volume charts. We investigated their urinary condition and characteristics, medical history, and medications. Thirty-four of these patients underwent ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) for 24 hours to evaluate blood pressure variability. RESULTS In the present study, 194 patients (80.2%) had nocturia and 136 (56.2%) had nocturnal polyuria (NP). Among patients with nocturia (≥2 voids/night), 130 (67.0%) had nocturnal polyuria, and 26 of those with nocturia (13.4%) had reduced functional bladder capacity. The use of 2 or more antihypertensive medications was significantly higher in the NP than non-NP group (22.8% vs. 12.3%; P = .035). Significantly more patients in the NP group had non-dipping blood pressure (P = .037). Non-dipping blood pressure was considered a potential factor for NP. CONCLUSION We suggest that treatment of non-dipping blood pressure may improve NP.

Abstract
Background Reduced port laparoscopic surgery (RPLS) is comparable to conventional multiport laparoscopic surgery and has the potential to provide improved cosmesis and decreased pain; as such, it satisfies a growing demand for less invasive surgical procedures. Moreover, a zigzag incision of the umbilicus results in a less visible scar in plastic surgery. Here we report a series of two cases with bilateral organ tumors treated by single-stage RPLS using a combination of a transumbilical approach and a zigzag incision. Case presentation Case 1: A 63-year-old man was diagnosed with right renal cell carcinoma (RCC) (clear cell carcinoma, pT1a, venous invasion (−)) and a splenic tumor (cavernous hemangioma). Case 2: An 84-year-old woman was diagnosed with concurrent left RCC (clear cell carcinoma, pT1b, 65 × 65 mm, venous invasion (+)) and ascending colon cancer (adenocarcinoma pT3 with no nodal involvement (0/48)). The perioperative course was uneventful in both cases. However, an additional incision was required in Case 2 for specimen excision. Therefore, the scars were more obvious in Case 2 than in Case 1. Conclusions Although more cases are required to evaluate the superiority of this technique, this novel procedure could be considered for patients with bilateral lesions.

Abstract
A 45-years-old man presented discharge of abscess from the umbilicus with lower abdominal pain. CT scan showed huge tumor from the bladder to the umbilical part with sigmoid colon invasion. He was diagnosed as urachal carcinoma, which was confirmed by pathological examination. We started FOLFOX chemotherapy according to advanced colon cancer. Approximately 80% of reduction was accomplished after 11 courses of FOLFOX. We performed radical cystectomy with sigmoid colon resection. Pathological examination revealed complete resection with negative surgical margin. No recurrence and metastasis were observed after 30 months of surgery. Urachal carcinoma is often advanced cancer when diagnosed. Effective chemotherapy is not established well. FOLFOX chemotherapy demonstrated the well antitumor effect in this case.

Abstract
Squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate is a rare tumor. It has been typically described as an aggressive cancer, with a median survival time of 14 months. We present a case of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate with a regional lymph node metastasis. The patient received a novel combination chemotherapy regimen, docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil, with radiotherapy to the whole pelvis and prostate. He was subsequently treated with seven courses of docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy without any severe adverse events. We identified a 60.1 % reduction in the prostatic tumor, and the lymph node metastasis was shrunk after chemotherapy. A needle biopsy of the prostate after chemotherapy revealed no malignancy. No recurrence has been observed for 24 months. A combination of docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy and radiotherapy might be an effective therapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate.

Abstract
Mioga ( Zingiber mioga Rosc.) is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), which is native to tropical Asia. In Japan, the young flower buds are used as a spice, and hand dermatitis suspected as being an allergy to mioga has been recognized in mioga greenhouse cultivators. To investigate the extent of the problems and the causes of dermatitis, 20 householders cultivating mioga in their greenhouses were asked to participate in a questionnaire study. Consecutive patch tests were performed on some subjects with dermatitis. Self-reported questionnaires were distributed to the main cultivator in each household who attended a lecture of mioga cultivation methods held at an agriculture cooperative association in the area. Some subjects who answered as presenting or having had hand dermatitis were patch tested for mioga (as is), four kinds of mioga extracts, and three kinds of natural rubber gloves. Results: 35 cultivators from 16 households answered the questionnaire. Eight of the 35 subjects (22.9%) answered that they had experienced hand dermatitis since they started mioga cultivation. Four of the 8 subjects were patch tested. Two of the 4 subjects showed allergic reactions to mioga (as is) and the extracts. The other two cases showed irritation to mioga (as is). The first two cases also showed allergic reactions to natural rubber gloves. To our knowledge, there is no previous report of allergic contact dermatitis from mioga.

Abstract
Positive ulnar variance is associated with ulnar impaction syndrome and ulnar variance is reported to increase with pronation. However, radiographic measurement can be affected markedly by the incident angle of the X-ray beam. We performed three-dimensional (3-D) computed tomography measurements of ulnar variance and ulnolunate distance during forearm rotation and compared these with plain radiographic measurements in 15 healthy wrists. From supination to pronation, ulnar variance increased in all cases on the radiographs; mean ulnar variance increased significantly and mean ulnolunate distance decreased significantly. However on 3-D imaging, ulna variance decreased in 12 cases on moving into pronation and increased in three cases; neither the mean ulnar variance nor mean ulnolunate distance changed significantly. Our results suggest that the forearm position in which ulnar variance increased varies among individuals. This may explain why some patients with ulnar impaction syndrome complain of wrist pain exacerbated by forearm supination. It also suggests that standard radiographic assessments of ulnar variance are unreliable.

Abstract
When titanium is anodized by discharge in NaCl solution, both antimicrobial activity and osteoconductivity are conferred. The viability of adherent micro-organisms and cells on antimicrobial titanium remains uncertain. We hypothesized that a thin peroxidation barrier would efficiently destroy adherent bacteria, whereas adherent osteoblastic cells would be viable, since these cells adhere to the surface indirectly though serum proteins. The efficacy of antimicrobial titanium appears to be based on peroxidation, since peroxidation products were detected in parallel with the destruction of bacterial cell-surface structures. The peroxidation effect of antimicrobial titanium was confined to the surface within narrow limits. The viability of osteoblastic cells on the surface was strongly dependent on the presence of serum protein, whereas that of adherent Streptococcus mutans was not affected by the presence of serum proteins. Therefore, differences in the adherent systems used by bacteria and osteoblastic cells are important determinants of their viability on antimicrobial titanium.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Additional susceptibility loci for type 2 diabetes have been identified by a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in European populations. To examine further the roles of these new loci, we performed a replication study for the association of these single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci with the disease in three independent Japanese populations. METHODS We genotyped seven of the 11 SNPs that emerged in stage 2 of the meta-analysis for European GWASs (rs864745 in JAZF1, rs12779790 near CDC123/CAMK1D, rs7961581 near TSPAN8/LGR5, rs4607103 near ADAMTS9, rs10923931 in NOTCH2, rs1153188 near DCD and rs9472138 near VEGFA) for three independent Japanese populations (first set, 1,630 type 2 diabetes patients vs 1,064 controls; second set, 1,272 type 2 diabetes patients vs 856 controls; third set, 486 type 2 diabetes patients vs 936 controls) using a TaqMan assay. The association of the SNP loci in each population was analysed using a logistic regression analysis, adjusting for age, sex and BMI, and the data were evaluated by a meta-analysis. RESULTS A meta-analysis for the three case-control studies identified a nominal association of rs864745 in JAZF1 with type 2 diabetes (OR 1.148, 95% CI 1.034-1.275, p = 0.0098, corrected p = 0.069). The association of other loci did not reach statistically significant levels (nominal p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION From these results the contribution of these seven loci in conferring susceptibility to type 2 diabetes is considered minor in the Japanese population, if they are present.

Abstract
To clarify the stability of the BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) genome in renal transplant (RT) recipients, three to five complete BKPyV genomes from each of six RT recipients with surviving renal allografts were molecularly cloned. The complete sequences of these clones were determined and compared in each patient. No nucleotide difference was detected among clones in two patients, and a few nucleotide variations were found among those in four patients. In each of these patients a parental sequence (usually the major sequence), from which variant sequences (usually minor sequences) with nucleotide substitutions would have been generated, were identified. A comparison between the parental and variant sequences in each patient identified a single nucleotide substitution in each variant sequence. From these findings, it was concluded that the genome of BKPyV is stable in RT recipients without nephropathy, with only minor nucleotide substitutions in the coding region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Urinary excretion of some low molecular weight proteins (LMWPs) is used as an indicator of tubular dysfunction, since they are increased by the damage of tubular reabsorption. Although serum cystatin C is known to be a sensitive marker for GFR, the property of urinary cystatin C as a LMWP has not been fully observed. We evaluated the clinical utility of urinary cystatin C. METHODS Urine samples were collected from 130 patients with various degree of renal dysfunction, 62 healthy subjects, and 2 patients with acute renal failure, one with renal acute renal failure, the other with prerenal acute renal failure. Urine levels of cystatin C, beta2-microglobulin (beta2mG), and alpha1-microglobulin (alpha1mG) were measured by immunonephelometry. Creatinine clearance(Ccr) tests were conducted on 130 patients with renal dysfunction. Creatinine(CRE) was measured by enzyme assay. RESULTS The daily urinary excretions of cystatin C and alpha1mG were increased significantly in patients with Ccr<30 ml/min(group I), compared to those in patients with 30 < or = Ccr<70 ml/min(II), and Ccr > or = 70ml/min(III). Although the mean daily excretion of beta2mG increased as Ccr decreased, the significant difference was not observed. The rate of increase in the mean value between III and I was extremely high in cystatin C. Fractional excretions of cystatin C and beta2mG calculated in the same groups increased significantly in I compared to II and III. The rate of increase in the mean value was higher in cystatin C. Regression analyses between urine CRE and each three LMWP gave the best correlation coefficient for cystatin C in healthy subjects. While in one patient with renal acute renal failure, the rate of increase in urine cystatin C was higher than that of other LMWPs, in another patient with prerenal acute renal failure, the rate of increase in urine cystatin C was low. CONCLUSIONS Although details of urinary movement of LMWPs in nephrons have not been clearly elucidated, the urinary cystatin C seems to have distinctive properties, and to be useful for the evaluation of renal injury.

Abstract
BK polyomavirus (BKV) is ubiquitous in the human population, infecting children without obvious symptoms, and persisting in the kidney in a latent state. In immunosuppressed patients, BKV is reactivated and excreted in urine. BKV isolates have been classified into four subtypes (I-IV) using either serological or genotyping methods. To elucidate the subtypes of BKV prevalent in Japan, the 287 bp typing region in the viral genome was PCR-amplified from urine samples of 45 renal transplant (RT) and 31 bone-marrow transplant (BMT) recipients. The amplified fragments were subjected to a phylogenetic or RFLP analysis to determine the subtypes of BKV isolates in urine samples. Subtypes I, II, III and IV were detected, respectively, in 70-80, 0, 2-3 and 10-20 % of the BKV-positive patients in both patient groups. This pattern of distribution was virtually identical to patterns previously demonstrated in England, Tanzania and the United States, suggesting that BKV subtypes are distributed similarly in various human populations. Furthermore, transcriptional control regions (TCRs) were PCR-amplified from the urine samples of 25 RT and 20 BMT recipients, and their nucleotide sequences were determined. The basic TCR structure (the so-called archetype configuration) was observed in most isolates belonging to subtypes I, III and IV (subtype II isolates were not available), albeit with several nucleotide substitutions and a few single-nucleotide deletions (or insertions). Only three TCRs carried extensive sequence rearrangements. Thus, it was concluded that the archetypal configuration of the BKV TCR has been conserved during the evolution of BKV.

Abstract
PURPOSE We reviewed reduced intensity stem cell transplantation (RIST) in metastatic renal cell cancer (RCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Two cases of lung metastasis of immunotherapy invalidity. Six days of fludarabine 30 mg/m2 and 2 days of busulfan 4 mg/kg were given as conditioning for mini-SCT. CyA and short-term MTX were used as immunosuppressive agents. RESULTS Size reduction of tumor was observed with dose reduction of CyA. Following steroid therapy for the treatment of GVHD, the tumor progressed. No serious complications except for GVHD. CONCLUSION These results suggested that RIST might be considered as salvage therapy in patients metastatic RCC.

Abstract
Interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy was conducted for a male patient aged 70 years old, who underwent a two-stage radical nephrectomy for bilateral renal cell carcinoma with multiple pulmonary metastasis. He was hospitalized due to leg weakness and disorientation 45 days after this treatment was started. We discontinued INF-alpha therapy immediately after neurologists indicated the disorder of the central and the peripheral nervous systems induced by the administration of this cytokine. Steroid pulse therapy was effective to resolve the patient's neurological symptoms. To our knowledge, this is the first case of the side effects on both central and peripheral nervous systems by IFN-alpha therapy for renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract
With improvement in immunosuppressive drugs, the beneficial role of donor-specific blood transfusion (DST) in the preconditioning of renal allograft recipients has been diminished. This retrospective study was conducted to investigate the influence of DST on long-term graft survival in successful one haplotype-mismatched kidney transplantation in the cyclosporine (CsA) era at Iwate Medical University. Between August 1983 and October 1996, 52 one haplotype-mismatched living related first renal transplants were performed. Fifty grafts survived beyond the first year after transplantation. These 50 patients were divided into two groups according to maintenance immunosuppression, 12 kidney graft recipients received azathioprine (AZA), prednisolone (PSL), CsA, and DST, and 38 recipients received AZA, PSL and CsA. Our DST protocol consisted of three transfusions of 30 ml of donor-specific buffy-coat at 4-week intervals, without immunosuppressive coverage. In recipients receiving DST and CsA, the 5-, 10-, and 13-year graft survival rates were 100%, 83%, and 67%, respectively. In recipients without DST, the 5-, 10-, and 13-year graft survival rates were 95%, 74%, and 69%, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups in long-term graft survival. In conclusion, DST and CsA combination treatment in our protocol may not induce long standing donor-specific immunologic hyporesponsiveness. Other strategies are expected to induce immunotolerance.

Abstract
We propose differential holography as a method to overcome the long-standing forward-scattering problem in photoelectron holography and related techniques for the three-dimensional imaging of atoms. Atomic images reconstructed from experimental and theoretical Cu 3p holograms from Cu(001) demonstrate that this method suppresses strong forward-scattering effects so as to yield more accurate three-dimensional images of side- and backscattering atoms.

Abstract
We report an unusual case in which infectious endocarditis presented systemic vasculitis and glomerulonephritis as the initial manifestation of the disease. The patient was a 16-year-old girl with congenital cyanotic heart disease who presented with skin purpura, proteinuria, and hematuria. She had hypergammaglobulinemia, cryoglobulinemia, and positive circulating immune complexes. Renal biopsy revealed crescentic glomerulonephritis. Her serum C3 level, which was initially normal, became decreased, and prednisolone and azathioprine were administered with a tentative diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Soon after, she developed fever and renal failure. Blood culture grew Streptococcus pyogenes, and the diagnosis of infectious endocarditis was made. Eight cases of systemic vasculitis and glomerulonephritis associated with infectious endocarditis have been described in the literature. Infectious endocarditis should be included in the differential diagnosis of systemic vasculitis and glomerulonephritis.

Abstract
A Japanese girl aged 5 years 4 months developed macroscopic hematuria and acute renal failure (ARF) 8 days before the appearance of purpura rash. A renal biopsy undertaken during the acute phase of illness revealed many red blood cells in the tubular lumina with no apparent glomerular lesions. ARF showed improvement without dialysis therapy. A second renal biopsy was performed 2.5 months later because of the prolonged proteinuria and hematuria. Sclerotic change and crescent formation were demonstrated in 30% and 20% of glomeruli, respectively. Red blood cell casts in the tubular lumina were completely resolved. It is likely that the tubular change was involved in the development of ARF at the onset of illness. Although ARF during or after episodes of macroscopic hematuria has been observed in IgA nephropathy, it may occur as an uncommon complication in Henoch-Schönlein nephritis, which is a common glomerulonephritis in children.

Abstract
We report a case of intractable lymphedema of the left leg following radical prostatectomy. The 69-year-old male patient complained of difficulty walking, caused by severe lymphedema. Intraarterial autologous lymphocyte transfusion therapy was performed because of failure of conventional conservative therapy, and the leg edema resolved almost completely. However, the treatment did not improve the penoscrotal edema necessitating excision of the edema and skin graft in a separate procedure. The post-operative course was excellent and the patient's performance status improved to 1 from 3.

Abstract
This study investigates the circadian blood pressure variation of non-diabetic chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients on both HD and non-HD days as well as the factors affecting diurnal BP variation. Forty-nine HD patients aged 61.8 +/- 12.9 years who were on daytime HD for 97 +/- 68 months were studied. No significant difference was found in every daytime and nighttime BP between the first (HD) and the second (non-HD) day. However, the ratio nighttime/daytime BP was significantly higher on the second day. Each BP diurnal variability pattern was classified as either Dipper (D: the ratio nighttime/daytime mean BP 0.8-0.9), non-dipper (0.9 < ND < 1.0), or inverted dipper (ID > 1.0). More than 75% of the cases were classified as ND (26 cases) or ID (11 cases). The ultrafiltration rate in D was significantly less than that in ND and ID. The difference of plasma renin activity between pre- and post-HD (dRen) was significantly higher in ID than in D and ND. The amount of dialysis (Kt/V) was found to be significantly correlated with nighttime BP fall. Ultrafiltration, dRen and Kt/V were independent factors for the abnormal BP diurnal variability. In conclusion, the decreased nocturnal BP fall seen in non-diabetic HD patients is associated with increased extracellular fluid even in the patients without overt overhydration, whereas relatively insufficient amount of dialysis (low Kt/V) may be another possible cause. The increased dRen observed only in ID patients may reflect occult cardiovascular damage or functional disturbances in aortic and carotid baroreflexes caused by arterial structural changes.

Abstract
Terazosin (TE) and tamsulosin (TA) were allocated randomly to 38 patients who had urinary disturbance accompanying prostatic hypertrophy, and the efficacy and safety of the drugs were examined. Subjective symptoms due to I-PSS were improved significantly in both TE and TA groups. On the other hand, objective symptoms such as the maximum urinary flow and mean urinary flow were improved more in the TE group. TE showed hypotensive and cholesterol-decreasing effects in patients who also had hypertension and hyperlipemia. No unknown adverse reactions were observed in either groups, and the drugs were shown to be highly safe. TE was considered to be useful as the first choice drug for the patients with hypertension and or hyperlipemia and those with severe objective symptoms. TA was considered to be useful for the patients with impaired drug compliance or those with severe subjective symptoms though objective symptoms were not so severe.

Abstract
We studied the serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D (Vit D)] in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and the influence of 1,25(OH)2D3 (Vit D3) on gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) during carcinogenesis. The serum Vit D levels were measured by a competitive protein-binding assay using the chromatographic method. Using the [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] (MTT) assay, noncytotoxic concentrations of Vit D3 and the tumor promoters N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethylnitrosamine (EHEN) were tested against cultured human renal proximal tubular cells (HRPTCs). GJIC function was assayed by the scrape-loading dye transfer technique. Cx43 mRNA expression was also examined by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Serum Vit D levels in patients with RCC were lower than those in controls (p< 0.001). Patients with T3 to T4 (rapid-growth) tumors had lower levels of Vit D than did patients with T1 to T2 (slow-growth) tumors (p < 0.001). Vit D3 enhanced the GJIC function of HRPTCs (p < 0.05), whereas NDMA and EHEN suppressed it (p < 0.05). When the cells were treated with tumor promoters and Vit D3 simultaneously, the GJIC functions remained at pretreatment levels. We also demonstrated Cx43 mRNA expression in RPTECs treated with EHEN and VitD3 simultaneously. These data suggest that a decrease in the serum Vit D level is one of the risk factors for development and progression of RCC, and Vit D3 may prevent RCC by preserving GJIC during carcinogenesis.

Abstract
The AutoAnalzer(Basic Model) manufactured on Technicon corporation was a very useful instrument for clinical laboratory automation, but it was necessary to convert the data obtained from the instrument to digital values used the chart reader. This was very troublesome and there was apprehension that there would be errors in A-D conversion. We tried converting data obtained from the AutoAnalzer to a digital value by on-line connection of the instruments with minicomputers(LINC-8 and FACOM-R). The output of the recorder was converted to voltage(0 to 100 V) using a potentiometer, quantitated(0 to 1.000) by the A-D converter attached to LINC-8, and processed by the minicomputer. The control-box was an experimental device mainly designed for the convenience of users. The functions of the control-box were designated analytical items, No. of A-D converters, start and stop of the AutoAnalzer operation to the minicomputer. Employing the control-box, a technician operated this system freely, without direct computer operation. We established a generally satisfactory system for clinical laboratory automation using the minicomputer.

Abstract
Emphysematous cystitis is a rare lower urinary tract infection. Patients with diabetes mellitus, neurogenic bladder, and recurrent urinary tract infection are generally at higher risk of this disease. A 71-year-old woman with neurogenic bladder was referred from the internal medicine department because of urinary retention. Abdominal radiography and computed tomographic (CT) scanning revealed a characteristic accumulation of air in the wall and lumen of the urinary bladder. Emphysematous cystitis was improved by antibiotic therapy and urinary drainage. CT scan was a sensitive method for detecting early signs and confirming the diagnosis.
