Developing and Validating a Korean Version of the Assessment of Children's Emotional Skills

In this study, a Korean Assessment of Children's Emotional Skills (ACES) was developed by modifying the original ACES which was initially introduced in the United States. Specifically, the original ACES was translated into Korean and revised to better fit the Korean cultural context. The content validity of the revised Korean ACES was established via expert reviews. To test its reliability, the revised Korean ACES was conducted on 286 six-year-old children. A confirmatory factor analysis indicated that our newly developed Korean ACES can be used as an appropriate tool to measure Korean children's emotional skills. The Korean ACES can stimulate further studies on these emotional skills and contribute to various international collaborative studies that seek to compare the emotional skills of children from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of pseudoscalars in the μμbb and ττbb final states

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson (H ) with a mass of 125Ge V to a pair of light pseudoscalars a 1 is performed in final states where one pseudoscalar decays to two b quarks and the other to a pair of muons or τ leptons. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 Te V corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level (CL ) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to μ μ b b and to τ τ b b , via a pair of a 1 s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass m a 1 and are observed to be in the range (0.17-3.3) × 10 - 4 and (1.7-7.7) × 10 - 2 in the μ μ b b and τ τ b b final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction B ( H → a 1 a 1 → ℓ ℓ b b ) at 95% CL , with ℓ being a muon or a τ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction B ( H → a 1 a 1 ) are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space, B ( H → a 1 a 1 ) values above 0.23 are excluded at 95% CL for m a 1 values between 15 and 60Ge V .

Observation of Seven Astrophysical Tau Neutrino Candidates with IceCube

We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 yr of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate ν_{τ} events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent ν_{τ} energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from π^{±}/K^{±} decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-ν_{τ} astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical ν_{τ} at the 5σ level. The measured astrophysical ν_{τ} flux is consistent with expectations based on previously published IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux measurements and neutrino oscillations.

CT-guided pretreatment biopsy diagnosis in patients with thymic epithelial tumours: diagnostic accuracy and risk of seeding

AIM

To investigate the diagnostic performance of computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy (PTNB) for thymic epithelial tumours (TETs) and the complication rate after PTNB including seeding after PTNB.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This retrospective study identified PTNBs for anterior mediastinal lesions between May 2007 and September 2021. The diagnostic performance for TETs and complications were investigated. The concordance of the histological grades of TETs between PTNB and surgery was evaluated. The factors associated with pleural seeding after PTNB were determined using Cox regression analysis.

RESULTS

Of 387 PTNBs, 235 PTNBs from 225 patients diagnosed as TETs (124 thymomas and 101 thymic carcinomas) and 150 PTNBs from 133 patients diagnosed as other than TETs were included. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for TETs were 89.4% (210/235), 100% (210/210), and 93.5% (360/385), respectively, with an immediate complication rate of 4.4% (17/385). The concordance rate of the histological grades between PTNB and surgery was 73.3% (77/105) after excluding uncategorised types of thymomas. During follow-up after PTNB (median duration, 38.8 months; range, 0.3-164.6 months), no tract seeding was observed. Pleural seeding was observed in 26 patients. Thymic carcinoma (hazard ratio [HR], 5.94; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.07-17.08; p=0.001) and incomplete resection (HR, 3.29; 95% CI, 1.20-9.02; p=0.02) were associated with pleural seeding, while the biopsy approach type (transpleural versus parasternal) was not associated (p=0.12).

CONCLUSIONS

Pretreatment biopsy for TETs was accurate and safe and may be considered for diagnosing TETs, particularly when the diagnosis is challenging and histological diagnosis is mandatory.

Which is better? Early versus delayed rehabilitation after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair

PURPOSE

This study aimed to compare the 5-year clinical and functional outcomes, including repaired tendon healing status, between early and delayed rehabilitation after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair METHODS: A total of 75 patients with rotator cuff tears (less than 5 cm) underwent arthroscopic repairs over a 60-month period. Participants were randomly assigned to early and delayed postoperative rehabilitation groups with distinct protocols. Clinical and functional outcome measures included Constant score, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) score, visual analogue scale for pain and isokinetic dynamometer test for muscle strength recovery. Clinical and functional scores were compared between baseline and 5 years postoperatively. Radiologic assessment via magnetic resonance imaging was performed at a minimum of 12 months postoperatively for evaluations of tendon integrity and recurrent tears.

RESULTS

Baseline characteristics showed no statistically significant differences between groups. Both groups demonstrated equivalent improvement in range of motion and pain scores with no statistical differences. Clinical scores improved significantly in both groups by postoperative 12 months and plateaued. At the postoperative 5-year mark, the early group showed better improvement in the visual analogue scale and UCLA score, while the delayed group had superior Constant scores. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging revealed six recurrent tears, two in the early group and four in the delayed group, with no statistical differences. Muscle strength recovery showed no differences between the two groups.

CONCLUSION

Both the early and the delayed rehabilitation groups showed similar outcomes in postoperative range of motion, functional scores, muscle strength recovery and tendon healing in the short- and mid-term follow-ups.

Observation of WWγ Production and Search for Hγ Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The observation of WWγ production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} is presented. The observed (expected) significance is 5.6 (5.1) standard deviations. Events are selected by requiring exactly two leptons (one electron and one muon) of opposite charge, moderate missing transverse momentum, and a photon. The measured fiducial cross section for WWγ is 5.9±0.8(stat)±0.8(syst)±0.7(modeling)  fb, in agreement with the next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics prediction. The analysis is extended with a search for the associated production of the Higgs boson and a photon, which is generated by a coupling of the Higgs boson to light quarks. The result is used to constrain the Higgs boson couplings to light quarks.

Design, synthesis of new 3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives and evaluation of their inhibitory properties as mixed lineage kinase 3 inhibitors

Mixed-lineage protein kinase 3 (MLK3) is implicated in several human cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. A series of 3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated as novel MLK3 inhibitors. A homology model of MLK3 was developed and all designed compounds were docked to assess their binding pattern and affinity toward the MLK3 active site. Based on this knowledge, we synthesized and experimentally evaluated the designed compounds. Majority of the compounds showed significant inhibition of MLK3 in the enzymatic assay. In particular, compounds 9a, 9e, 9j, 9 k, 12b and 12d exhibited IC50 values of 6, 6, 8, 11, 14 and 14 nM, respectively. Furthermore, compounds 9a, 9e, 9 k and 12b exhibited favorable physicochemical properties among these compounds.

New Structures in the J/ψJ/ψ Mass Spectrum in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search is reported for near-threshold structures in the J/ψJ/ψ invariant mass spectrum produced in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV from data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 135  fb^{-1}. Three structures are found, and a model with quantum interference among these structures provides a good description of the data. A new structure is observed with a local significance above 5 standard deviations at a mass of 6638_{-38}^{+43}(stat)_{-31}^{+16}(syst)  MeV. Another structure with even higher significance is found at a mass of 6847_{-28}^{+44}(stat)_{-20}^{+48}(syst)  MeV, which is consistent with the X(6900) resonance reported by the LHCb experiment and confirmed by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for another new structure, with a local significance of 4.7 standard deviations, is found at a mass of 7134_{-25}^{+48}(stat)_{-15}^{+41}(syst)  MeV. Results are also reported for a model without interference, which does not fit the data as well and shows mass shifts up to 150 MeV relative to the model with interference.

Search for Scalar Leptoquarks Produced via τ-Lepton-Quark Scattering in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The first search for scalar leptoquarks produced in τ-lepton-quark collisions is presented. It is based on a set of proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. The reconstructed final state consists of a jet, significant missing transverse momentum, and a τ lepton reconstructed through its hadronic or leptonic decays. Limits are set on the product of the leptoquark production cross section and branching fraction and interpreted as exclusions in the plane of the leptoquark mass and the leptoquark-τ-quark coupling strength.

Improved prediction of clinical pregnancy using artificial intelligence with enhanced inner cell mass and trophectoderm images

This study aimed to assess the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) model for predicting clinical pregnancy using enhanced inner cell mass (ICM) and trophectoderm (TE) images. In this retrospective study, we included static images of 2555 day-5-blastocysts from seven in vitro fertilization centers in South Korea. The main outcome of the study was the predictive capability of the model to detect clinical pregnancies (gestational sac). Compared with the original embryo images, the use of enhanced ICM and TE images improved the average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the AI model from 0.716 to 0.741. Additionally, a gradient-weighted class activation mapping analysis demonstrated that the enhanced image-trained AI model was able to extract features from crucial areas of the embryo in 99% (506/512) of the cases. Particularly, it could extract the ICM and TE. In contrast, the AI model trained on the original images focused on the main areas in only 86% (438/512) of the cases. Our results highlight the potential efficacy of using ICM- and TE-enhanced embryo images when training AI models to predict clinical pregnancy.

Search for Inelastic Dark Matter in Events with Two Displaced Muons and Missing Transverse Momentum in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for dark matter in events with a displaced nonresonant muon pair and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} of proton-proton (pp) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV produced by the LHC in 2016-2018. No significant excess over the predicted backgrounds is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the inelastic dark matter production cross section σ(pp→A^{'}→χ_{1}χ_{2}) and the decay branching fraction B(χ_{2}→χ_{1}μ^{+}μ^{-}), where A^{'} is a dark photon and χ_{1} and χ_{2} are states in the dark sector with near mass degeneracy. This is the first dedicated collider search for inelastic dark matter.

Luminosity determination using Z boson production at the CMS experiment

The measurement of Z boson production is presented as a method to determine the integrated luminosity of CMS data sets. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . Events with Z bosons decaying into a pair of muons are selected. The total number of Z bosons produced in a fiducial volume is determined, together with the identification efficiencies and correlations from the same data set, in small intervals of 20pb - 1 of integrated luminosity, thus facilitating the efficiency and rate measurement as a function of time and instantaneous luminosity. Using the ratio of the efficiency-corrected numbers of Z bosons, the precisely measured integrated luminosity of one data set is used to determine the luminosity of another. For the first time, a full quantitative uncertainty analysis of the use of Z  bosons for the integrated luminosity measurement is performed. The uncertainty in the extrapolation between two data sets, recorded in 2017 at low and high instantaneous luminosity, is less than 0.5%. We show that the Z boson rate measurement constitutes a precise method, complementary to traditional methods, with the potential to improve the measurement of the integrated luminosity.

Measurement of the production cross section for a W boson in association with a charm quark in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The strange quark content of the proton is probed through the measurement of the production cross section for a W boson and a charm (c) quark in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm jets are tagged using the presence of a muon or a secondary vertex inside the jet. The W + c production cross section and the cross section ratio R c ± = σ ( W + + c ¯ ) / σ ( W - + c ) are measured inclusively and differentially as functions of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the lepton originating from the W boson decay. The precision of the measurements is improved with respect to previous studies, reaching 1% in R c ± = 0.950 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.010 (syst) . The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Autophagy in an extruded disc compared to the remaining disc after lumbar disc herniation in the same patient

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate autophagy in an extruded disc and to compare this activity with the activity in the remaining disc after lumbar disc herniation in the same patient.

METHODS

In total, 12 patients (females 4, males 8) with the extruded type of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) were surgically treated. Their mean age was 54.3 ± 15.8 years (range: 29 ~ 78 years). The mean interval from the occurrence of symptoms to the operation was 9.8 ± 9.4 weeks (range: 2 ~ 24 weeks). The extruded discs were excised, and the remaining disc material removed, to prevent recurrence of herniation. Immediately after specimen collection, all tissues were stored at -70 °C prior to analysis. Autophagy was assessed immunohistochemically and via Western blotting for Atg5, Atg7, Atg12, Atg12L1, and Beclin-1. And the relationship between autophagy and apoptosis was investigated by correlation analysis of caspase-3 with autophagy proteins.

RESULTS

The expression levels of autophagic markers were significantly increased in the extruded discs compared to the remaining discs within the same patients. The mean expression levels of Atg5, Atg7, Atg12, and Beclin-1 in extruded discs were statistically significantly higher than those in the remaining discs (P < 0.01, P < 0.001, P < 0.01, and P < 0.001 respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

The autophagic pathway was more active in extruded disc material than in remaining disc material within the same patient. This may explain spontaneous resorption of the extruded disc after LDH.

Temperature-insensitive label-free SARS-CoV-2 spike protein detection based on complementary refractive index and temperature dependence of multi-mode interference and grating resonance

We demonstrated temperature-insensitive, label-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (SSP) by harnessing the complementary refractive index and temperature dependence of multi-mode interference (MMI) created by a no-core fiber (NCF) and phase-matched resonance generated by a long-period fiber grating (LPFG). To combine MMI and grating resonance, primarily sensitive to the surrounding medium refractive index (SMRI) and ambient temperature, respectively, a fiber-optic transducer was fabricated by splicing an NCF segment with an LPFG inscribed on double-clad fiber. The transducer was functionalized with human ACE2 receptors to selectively capture SSP. The functionalized sensor head exhibited high SSP selectivity, with overall average wavelength displacements of ∼253.33 and ∼160.00 pm in PBS and saliva, respectively, for SSP with concentrations ranging from 1 to 104 ng/mL. These spectral shifts are associated with localized SMRI modulations on the sensor surface induced by specific binding between SSP and ACE2. We also examined the cross-reactivity of the sensor head for MERS-CoV spike protein to confirm its SSP specificity. Moreover, we proved the capability of temperature-independent SSP detection and ambient temperature measurement by scrutinizing the temperature effect on the sensor performance. Our functionalized fiber transducer showed great promise as a temperature-insensitive and portable platform for rapid SSP detection.

Can multiple miniplates improve the treatment of comminuted patellar fracture?

BACKGROUND

We have applied primarily multiple locking compression miniplates in treating multifragmentary, comminuted patellar fracture in combination with conventional fixation methods.

METHODS

Medical and radiologic data were retrospectively reviewed for the patients surgically fixated with locking compression miniplates in patellar fracture of AO/OTA 34-C3. The primary outcome was bone union at the final follow-up, and the secondary outcomes were functional outcomes and postoperative complications associated with the procedure. For the functional assessment, the Lysholm score, Tegner scores, and the knee range of motion was compared.

RESULTS

A total of twenty patients with AO/OTA 34-C3 patellar fracture were included in the study with an average follow-up period of 15 months (range:11 ~ 18 months) between June 2018 and November 2021. Eleven male and nine female patients presented an average age of 57.15 years. The primary fracture union was seen in all twenty patients, and the average time to the union was 15.6 weeks on serial radiograph follow-up. All patients did not show any postoperative complications, such as fixation failure, infection, or revision operations. Postoperatively, all patients achieved an average range of motion of 130 degrees, and the Lysholm and Tegners scores showed an average of 90.4 and 5.0 at the final follow-up, retrospectively.

CONCLUSION

Fixations with miniplates in comminuted patellar fractures can be a useful option for effective osteosynthesis due to their versatile, efficient, and low-profile nature.

Review of standard paediatric neuroradiology MRI protocols from 12 UK tertiary paediatric hospitals: is there much variation between centres?

AIM

To investigate how magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations are protocolled in tertiary paediatric neuroradiology centres around the UK for some of the more common presentations encountered in paediatric neuroradiology, and to identify any variations of note.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

All 19 UK tertiary paediatric neuroradiology centres registered with the British Society of Neuroradiologists-Paediatric Group were contacted and asked if they could provide a copy of their standard MRI protocols. Twelve responded (63%) and 10 of the more common presentations were selected and the standard acquired sequences obtained at each participating centre were compared. Where available the collated protocols were also compared against current published guidance.

RESULTS

The basic sequences carried out by centres around the UK are similar; however, there are lots of variations overall. The only standardised protocol currently being implemented nationally in paediatric imaging is that for brain tumours. Otherwise, chosen protocols are generally dependent on the preferences and technical capabilities of individual centres. Suggested published protocols also exist for non-accidental injury (NAI), multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and head and neck imaging.

CONCLUSIONS

The differences in MRI protocolling depend in part on technical capabilities and in part on the experience and preferences of the paediatric neuroradiologists at each centre. For most presentations, there is no consensus as to what constitutes the perfect protocol. The present results will be useful for specialist centres who may wish to review their current protocols, and for more generalist centres to use as a reference to guide their MRI protocolling.

Search for Boosted Dark Matter in COSINE-100

We search for energetic electron recoil signals induced by boosted dark matter (BDM) from the galactic center using the COSINE-100 array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The signal would be an excess of events with energies above 4 MeV over the well-understood background. Because no excess of events are observed in a 97.7  kg·yr exposure, we set limits on BDM interactions under a variety of hypotheses. Notably, we explored the dark photon parameter space, leading to competitive limits compared to direct dark photon search experiments, particularly for dark photon masses below 4 MeV and considering the invisible decay mode. Furthermore, by comparing our results with a previous BDM search conducted by the Super-Kamionkande experiment, we found that the COSINE-100 detector has advantages in searching for low-mass dark matter. This analysis demonstrates the potential of the COSINE-100 detector to search for MeV electron recoil signals produced by the dark sector particle interactions.

Measurement of the top quark mass using a profile likelihood approach with the lepton + jets final states in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The mass of the top quark is measured in 36.3fb - 1 of LHC proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at s = 13 Te V . The measurement uses a sample of top quark pair candidate events containing one isolated electron or muon and at least four jets in the final state. For each event, the mass is reconstructed from a kinematic fit of the decay products to a top quark pair hypothesis. A profile likelihood method is applied using up to four observables per event to extract the top quark mass. The top quark mass is measured to be 171.77 ± 0.37 Ge V . This approach significantly improves the precision over previous measurements.

Simultaneous bright- and dark-field X-ray microscopy at X-ray free electron lasers

The structures, strain fields, and defect distributions in solid materials underlie the mechanical and physical properties across numerous applications. Many modern microstructural microscopy tools characterize crystal grains, domains and defects required to map lattice distortions or deformation, but are limited to studies of the (near) surface. Generally speaking, such tools cannot probe the structural dynamics in a way that is representative of bulk behavior. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction based imaging has long mapped the deeply embedded structural elements, and with enhanced resolution, dark field X-ray microscopy (DFXM) can now map those features with the requisite nm-resolution. However, these techniques still suffer from the required integration times due to limitations from the source and optics. This work extends DFXM to X-ray free electron lasers, showing how the [Formula: see text] photons per pulse available at these sources offer structural characterization down to 100 fs resolution (orders of magnitude faster than current synchrotron images). We introduce the XFEL DFXM setup with simultaneous bright field microscopy to probe density changes within the same volume. This work presents a comprehensive guide to the multi-modal ultrafast high-resolution X-ray microscope that we constructed and tested at two XFELs, and shows initial data demonstrating two timing strategies to study associated reversible or irreversible lattice dynamics.

A search for decays of the Higgs boson to invisible particles in events with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

A search for decays to invisible particles of Higgs bosons produced in association with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson, which both decay to a fully hadronic final state, has been performed using proton-proton collision data collected at s = 13 Te V by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The 95% confidence level upper limit set on the branching fraction of the 125Ge V Higgs boson to invisible particles, B ( H → inv ) , is 0.54 (0.39 expected), assuming standard model production cross sections. The results of this analysis are combined with previous B ( H → inv ) searches carried out at s = 7 , 8, and 13Te V in complementary production modes. The combined upper limit at 95% confidence level on B ( H → inv ) is 0.15 (0.08 expected).

Observation of τ Lepton Pair Production in Ultraperipheral Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV

We present an observation of photon-photon production of τ lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404  μb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. The γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-} process is observed for τ^{+}τ^{-} events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-})=4.8±0.6(stat)±0.5(syst)  μb, where the second (third) term corresponds to the statistical (systematic) uncertainty in σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}) in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}), we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the τ lepton of a_{τ}=0.001_{-0.089}^{+0.055}.

Impact of Free Hospital-Provided Rideshare Service on Radiation Therapy Completion Rates: A Matched Cohort Analysis

Radiation therapy (RT) is generally given in consecutive daily sessions over multiple weeks. This poses challenges for patients who face barriers such as limited access to public or private transportation, limited financial resources, lack of social support, and long distances to healthcare facilities. Delayed or incomplete RT increases risk for worse clinical outcomes. The potential of rideshare service, which uses a private vehicle for hire arranged through a phone-based application or website, to facilitate timely RT is understudied.

MATERIALS/METHODS

Retrospective data was collected on patients who received RT at a single institution from 2017-2022. Patient demographic and treatment characteristics were compared between those who did and did not utilize free hospital-provided rideshare service. RT completion rates were analyzed for a 1:1 matched non-rideshare cohort using optimal matching with the scaled Euclidean distance metric, to balance age, sex, race, performance status, number of fractions prescribed, Area Deprivation Index (ADI), distance to treatment center, year of diagnosis, treatment site, intent, and modality. ADI is a validated composite measure of community-level socioeconomic deprivation.

RESULTS

Of 2,906 patients who underwent RT, 58 utilized free hospital-provided rideshare service. Rideshare utilizers had a lower median age (60 vs 66, p = .02), and were more likely to identify as Black or African American (60 vs 22%, p<.0001) compared to non-rideshare utilizers. Rideshare utilizers also had higher ADI scores (median 9 vs 5, p<.0001), indicating higher socioeconomic disadvantage, and travelled shorter distances for treatment (median 5.0 vs 14.7 miles, p<.0001). More rideshare utilizers underwent RT for curative intent (79 vs 50%, p<.0001), concordant with a higher number of fractions prescribed (median 28 vs 5, p<.0001) as well as longer treatment course duration (median 39 vs 13 days, p<.0001). The most common treatment sites were head and neck (31%) and breast / chest wall (22%) for rideshare utilizers, and pelvis (27%) and brain (21%) for non-rideshare utilizers (p<.0001). Volumetric modulated arc therapy followed by 3D conformal were the most common treatment modalities in both groups. The matched cohort analysis revealed that RT completion rates were significantly higher for rideshare vs non-rideshare utilizers at 96 vs 81% (p = .01) overall, and 98 vs 78% (p = .01) for patients undergoing treatment with curative intent.

CONCLUSION

Even after adjustment for socioeconomic, clinical, and treatment characteristics, utilization of free hospital-provided rideshare service was associated with improved RT completion rates. These findings are notable as the majority of rideshare utilizers come from socioeconomically marginalized communities, and would otherwise be expected to face significant barriers to RT completion.

Peripheral T-Cell Priming and Micrometastatic Disease Control with Metastasis-Directed Therapy: Multidimensional Immunogenomic Profiling of Oligometastatic Prostate Cancer in the EXTEND Trial

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Comprehensive metastasis-directed therapy (MDT) for oligometastatic prostate cancer extended progression-free survival (PFS) and time to new lesion formation in the intermittent hormone therapy (HT) basket of EXTEND. To better understand the mechanism of MDT benefit, we pooled the intermittent and continuous HT baskets of EXTEND and tested the hypothesis that adding MDT to HT would program systemic T-cells to control micrometastatic disease.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A total of 174 men were randomized to HT with or without MDT to up to 5 sites of metastases. HT was given for 6 months (intermittent basket, n = 87) or indefinitely (continuous basket, n = 87). Peripheral blood samples were drawn at enrollment, at the end of MDT, at 3 months follow-up (3 mo F/U), and at progression and then analyzed by flow cytometry, T-cell receptor (TCR)-β CDR3 variable region sequencing, multiplex cytokine profiling, and next-generation circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) sequencing. TCR clonal expansion was determined using a published betabinomial model. Repertoire changes were assessed by Morisita's index, and dominant TCR repertoire motifs were characterized with ImmunoMap. Associations between blood markers and PFS were evaluated with Cox regression adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) accounting for randomization arm and stratifying for intermittent vs continuous HT.

RESULTS

Randomization to MDT+HT was associated with T-cell activation, proliferation, and clonal expansion. This response was first observed at end-MDT as upregulated expression of T-cell activation and inhibition markers (i.e., ICOS, Tim-3, and LAG-3) and increases in highly proliferative CD4+ and CD8+ Ki67hi T-cells (all P<0.05). TCR sequencing of 7,678,911 T-cells revealed that MDT+HT was associated with TCR clonal expansion, remodeling of the TCR repertoire, and changes in dominant TCR motifs at end-MDT and 3 mo F/U (all P<0.05). Observed T-cell priming could be driven by signaling networks of canonical T-cell stimulatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-12, and IL-15), which were upregulated at end-MDT and persisted at 3 mo F/U (all P<0.05). This modulation of T-cell phenotype, clonotype, and cytokine concentrations was not observed in the HT-monotherapy arm. At end-MDT, systemic T-cell responses were associated with improved PFS, most notably CD8+ T-cell expression of LAG-3 (aHR 0.22, 95% CI 0.03-0.91) and high TCR clonal expansion (aHR 0.13, 95% CI 0.02-0.52). High ctDNA burden at end-MDT correlated with worse PFS (aHR 1.41, 95% CI 1.04-2.54), as did CD8+ T-cell expression of inhibitory receptor TIGIT at 3 mo F/U (aHR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.06).

CONCLUSION

The addition of MDT to HT induced systemic T-cell activation and expansion, which was not observed in the HT-only arm. This systemic immune response was independently associated with improved PFS. In addition to cytoreduction of macroscopic disease, MDT-induced immune education may be an important complementary mechanism of micrometastatic control in oligometastatic prostate cancer.

Multimodality Dosimetric Evaluation for the Treatment of Recurrent Brain Tumors

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

GammaTile Surgically Targeted Radiation Therapy (STaRT) are bioresorbable collagen tiles containing four Cesium-131 radioactive seeds which are permanently implanted into the operative bed immediately following the surgical resection of a brain tumor. Alternative radiation treatment approaches for recurrent brain tumors include external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) with either proton or photon (volumetric modulated arc therapy, or VMAT) radiation. The purpose of this study is to perform a comparative dosimetric study of these three modalities for cases of recurrent brain tumors. We hypothesize that GammaTile would be dosimetrically superior at sparing radiation dose to surrounding organs at risk.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A total of 5 patients have received GammaTile StaRT therapy at our institute for recurrent brain tumors in 2021-2022. Out of these 5 patients, 3 were recurrent glioblastoma (GBM) and 2 were brain metastasis (brain-met) cases. All patients were previously treated with radiation. Typical prescription for GammaTile therapy is 60 Gy to the High Risk CTV (HR_CTV), specified by 5mm depth from the plane of the seeds. For recurrent GBM cases, the alternative methods of radiation are proton therapy and photon therapy using VMAT. The standard re-irradiation dose for proton and photon therapy is 35 Gy in 10 fractions prescribed to PTV (3 mm expansion of EBRT CTV). For brain-met cases, an alternate method is hypo-fractionation radiation therapy with Linac-based SBRT. Linac-based SBRT prescription depends on the volume of EBRT CTV. For one of the brain-met cases, the SBRT prescription was 30 Gy in 5 fractions, and for the other case it was 27 Gy in 3 fractions to PTV (2 mm expansion from EBRT CTV). Proton and photon plans were generated in a treatment planning system using a double scattering Mevion system and a VersaHD with agility head, respectively. All the physical doses were converted to biological effective dose (BED) for evaluation.

RESULTS

The dosimetric quantities are summarized in table 1. These quantities were evaluated using HR_CTV and EBRT_CTV for GammaTile therapy and EBRT (proton/photon), respectively. GammaTile therapy reduces dose to normal brain tissue considerably. However, it may have more uncertainty in the dose delivered compared to proton and photon EBRT.

CONCLUSION

It appears that all three treatment modalities are adequate for treating recurrent brain tumors. However, GammaTile therapy may allow to deliver higher dose to the targets while reducing the irradiation to adjacent normal tissue.

Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) Inhibition Induces DNA Damage and Radiosensitization in Glioblastoma Cell Lines

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Glioblastomas (GBM) are highly dependent on glucose for energy to promote cell proliferation and tumor growth. Preclinical studies have shown that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, drugs that are FDA approved for diabetes, reduce the viability and invasiveness of GBM cells. We hypothesize that SGLT2 inhibitors decrease GBM cell growth and viability by promoting DNA damage.

MATERIALS/METHODS

The SGLT2 inhibitors canagliflozin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin were used and cell studies were performed under low glucose (0.6 mM) media conditions. In the cell proliferation assays, cells were counted in triplicate after 24-, 48- and 72-hour treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors. Glucose transport assays were performed using a 6-fluorescent iodinated glucose analog (6FIGA) which is selectively transported by SGLTs and not by glucose transporters (GLUTs). Immunoblots were used to measure protein expression of SGLT2 and markers of DNA damage (phospho-ATM and gamma-H2AX). Cellular radiosensitization was evaluated by clonogenic survival assays.

RESULTS

SGLT2 inhibition with canagliflozin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin decreased cell proliferation in LN229, U118MG and LN18 GBM cells lines. In LN229 cells, 72-hour treatment with canagliflozin (30 µM) decreased cell proliferation by 60% compared to vehicle control cells (p<0.0001) whereas dapagliflozin (30 µM) and empagliflozin (30 µM) decreased cell proliferation compared to vehicle control cells by 17% (p<0.0001) and 19% (p<0.001), respectively. Glucose transport assays show that 6FIGA uptake is reduced by canagliflozin and dapagliflozin in LN229 and U87 GBM cells. Canagliflozin treatment (50 µM) for 24 hours in LN229 cells results in increased phosphorylated ATM protein and increased gamma-H2AX protein, markers of DNA damage, by immunoblot. SGLT2 protein expression was not affected by canagliflozin. Treatment with canagliflozin (50 µM) 48 hours prior to 2, 4 and 6 Gy of ionizing radiation reduced clonogenic survival of LN229, LN18 and U118MG GBM cells.

CONCLUSION

SGLT2 inhibitors canagliflozin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin decrease GBM cell proliferation, with the highest inhibitory effect seen with canagliflozin. Canagliflozin treatment alone increases DNA damage signaling in GBM cells. Canagliflozin radiosensitizes GBM cells. This work provides preliminary preclinical rationale for canagliflozin as a radiosensitizer in GBM.

The Impact of Travel Time on Trimodal Therapy Compared to Cystectomy for Bladder Cancer

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radical cystectomy (RC) and Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT) followed by concurrent chemoradiation therapy (trimodal therapy, TMT) are both evidence-based approaches to the management of muscle-invasive bladder cancer, and no randomized evidence conclusively supports the use of one treatment over another. Literature suggests that increasing distance to radiation therapy (RT) facilities reduces the likelihood that patients will receive RT, though this has not been evaluated in bladder cancer. We hypothesize that greater travel time between a patient's home and their closest RT facility is associated with a lower likelihood of undergoing TMT.

MATERIALS/METHODS

Clinical data and the locations of patient residences and surgical facilities performing RC were obtained from the California Cancer Registry. RT facility locations were compiled from state regulatory databases and dosimetric accrediting bodies. Travel time was identified using the Google Distance Matrix API. California patients diagnosed with T2-4N0 bladder cancer in 2018-2019 who underwent TMT (> = 55Gy) or RC were included in this analysis. Chi-square tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to assess factors associated with an increased likelihood of receipt of TMT, and to compare travel times for patients receiving TMT vs RC.

RESULTS

A total of 536 patients met inclusion criteria, and 27.1% underwent TMT. Patients receiving TMT were more likely to be older, White, male, and live further from their nearest RT facility. After adjusting for age, sex, and race/ethnicity, patients undergoing TMT were more likely than RC patients to live more than 30 minutes away from the nearest RT facility (OR 1.53, p = 0.21, ref<15 minutes). On multivariate analysis, patients receiving TMT were less likely than surgical patients to live 30-60 minutes or >60 minutes from their treatment facility ((OR 0.5, p-value<0.01, and OR 0.23, p-value <.001), ref: <30 minutes). Only 26.2% of patients who received TMT were treated at their nearest RT facility, while 13.3% of patients undergoing RC were treated at their nearest surgical facility.

CONCLUSION

In a modern cohort of bladder cancer patients in California, about a quarter of T2-4N0 patients are undergoing bladder preservation. Patients undergoing TMT lived further from their nearest RT facility than patients undergoing surgery. Surgical patients were more likely to live >30 minutes from their treating facility than TMT patients. A minority of patients underwent treatment at the facility nearest to them, regardless of treatment modality chosen. Taken together, this suggests that proximity to the nearest RT facility may not be associated with a higher likelihood of undergoing TMT. Examination of actual treatment facilities (as opposed to the closest facility) shows that patients are traveling further for surgical care than TMT.

Clinical Variables Impact Time to Inpatient Radiation Oncology Consultation for Spine Metastases: A Single Institution Study

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Timely initiation of treatment for patients presenting with spinal metastases is essential for optimal oncologic care. An important rate limiting step for many patients is initiation of radiation oncology consultation.

MATERIALS/METHODS

We performed a retrospective single institution study on adult inpatients with spine metastases with or without cord compression from 2018-2021. Variables related to inpatient care were collected. Our primary study endpoint was time to inpatient radiation consultation of less than or equal to 2 days. Our secondary study endpoint was time to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) order less than or equal to 1 day. Multivariable logistic regression was utilized to determine which variables were associated with our study endpoints. P-values less than 0.05 were considered significant.

RESULTS

A total of 160 patients received inpatient care between 2018-2021. The median age of our study population was 68 years. One hundred twenty-one patients (75.6%) underwent initial MRI imaging of their spine. One hundred thirty-nine (86.9%) patients underwent inpatient radiation oncology consultation. Forty-seven patients (29.4%) were non-ambulatory on presentation The median time to inpatient radiation consultation was 1 day (interquartile range [IQR]: 1-3 days). Patients with a diagnosis of cancer at presentation were more likely to have an inpatient radiation consultation within two days (OR: 5.25, 95% CI: 1.64-17.38, p = 0.006). Spine MRIs ordered within 1 day were more likely to lead to radiation oncology consultation within 2 days of presentation (OR: 9.75, 95% CI: 1.83-61.78, p = 0.009). Similarly, surgical consultation within 1 day was more likely to lead to radiation oncology consultation within two days of presentation (OR: 6.60, 95% CI: 1.41 - 35.09, p = 0.019). There was a higher likelihood of ordering a spine MRI within 1 day of presentation for patients with difficulty ambulating (OR: 6.00, 95% CI: 1.78 - 27.51, p = 0.008).

CONCLUSION

Our analysis identifies cancer diagnosis, time to surgical consultation, time to MRI order, and ambulation status as influencing the time to inpatient radiation consultation and spine MRI orders. These variables should be taken into consideration to optimize care for inpatients with spine metastases and cord compression.

Measurement of the Dependence of the Hadron Production Fraction Ratios f_{s}/f_{u} and f_{d}/f_{u} on B Meson Kinematic Variables in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The dependence of the ratio between the B_{s}^{0} and B^{+} hadron production fractions, f_{s}/f_{u}, on the transverse momentum (p_{T}) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B_{s}^{0}→J/ψϕ and B^{+}→J/ψK^{+}. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6  fb^{-1}. The f_{s}/f_{u} ratio is observed to depend on the B p_{T} and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large p_{T}. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B^{0} to B^{+} meson production fractions, f_{d}/f_{u}, is also measured, for the first time in proton-proton collisions, using the B^{0}→J/ψK^{*0} decay channel. The result is found to be within 1 standard deviation of unity and independent of p_{T} and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

Search for Exotic Higgs Boson Decays H→AA→4γ with Events Containing Two Merged Diphotons in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

We present the first direct search for exotic Higgs boson decays H→AA, A→γγ in events with two photonlike objects. The hypothetical particle A is a low-mass spin-0 particle decaying promptly to a merged diphoton reconstructed as a single photonlike object. We analyze the data collected by the CMS experiment at sqrt[s]=13  TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136  fb^{-1}. No excess above the estimated background is found. We set upper limits on the branching fraction B(H→AA→4γ) of (0.9-3.3)×10^{-3} at 95% confidence level for masses of A in the range 0.1-1.2 GeV.

Observation of Same-Sign WW Production from Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The first observation of the production of W^{±}W^{±} bosons from double parton scattering processes using same-sign electron-muon and dimuon events in proton-proton collisions is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Multivariate discriminants are used to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds. A binned maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. The measured cross section for production of same-sign W bosons decaying leptonically is 80.7±11.2(stat) _{-8.6}^{+9.5}(syst)±12.1(model)  fb, whereas the measured fiducial cross section is 6.28±0.81(stat)±0.69(syst)±0.37(model)  fb. The observed significance of the signal is 6.2 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis.

Observation of the Rare Decay of the η Meson to Four Muons

A search for the rare η→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} double-Dalitz decay is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with high-rate muon triggers during 2017 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101  fb^{-1}. A signal having a statistical significance well in excess of 5 standard deviations is observed. Using the η→μ^{+}μ^{-} decay as normalization, the branching fraction B(η→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-})=[5.0±0.8(stat)±0.7(syst)±0.7(B_{2μ})]×10^{-9} is measured, where the last term is the uncertainty in the normalization channel branching fraction. This work achieves an improved precision of over 5 orders of magnitude compared to previous results, leading to the first measurement of this branching fraction, which is found to agree with theoretical predictions.

Measurements of jet multiplicity and jet transverse momentum in multijet events in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

Multijet events at large transverse momentum (p T ) are measured at s = 13 Te V using data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with p T > 50 Ge V that are produced in association with a high-p T dijet system is measured in various ranges of the p T of the jet with the highest transverse momentum and as a function of the azimuthal angle difference Δ ϕ 1 , 2 between the two highest p T jets in the dijet system. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momenta of the four highest p T jets. The measurements are compared with leading and next-to-leading order matrix element calculations supplemented with simulations of parton shower, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. In addition, the measurements are compared with next-to-leading order matrix element calculations combined with transverse-momentum dependent parton densities and transverse-momentum dependent parton shower.

Azimuthal correlations in Z +jets events in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The production of Z bosons associated with jets is measured in pp collisions at s = 13 Te V with data recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with transverse momentum p T > 30 Ge V is measured for different regions of the Z boson's p T ( Z ) , from lower than 10Ge V to higher than 100Ge V . The azimuthal correlation Δ ϕ between the Z boson and the leading jet, as well as the correlations between the two leading jets are measured in three regions of p T ( Z ) . The measurements are compared with several predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders, interfaced with parton showers. Predictions based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and corresponding parton showers give a good description of the measurement in the regions where multiple parton interactions and higher jet multiplicities are not important. The effects of multiple parton interactions are shown to be important to correctly describe the measured spectra in the low p T ( Z ) regions.

Search for Higgs Boson Decay to a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H→cc[over ¯], produced in association with a leptonically decaying V (W or Z) boson is presented. The search is performed with proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. Novel charm jet identification and analysis methods using machine learning techniques are employed. The analysis is validated by searching for Z→cc[over ¯] in VZ events, leading to its first observation at a hadron collider with a significance of 5.7 standard deviations. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(VH)B(H→cc[over ¯]) is 0.94 (0.50_{-0.15}^{+0.22})pb at 95% confidence level (C.L.), corresponding to 14 (7.6_{-2.3}^{+3.4}) times the standard model prediction. For the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, κ_{c}, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. interval is 1.1<|κ_{c}|<5.5 (|κ_{c}|<3.4), the most stringent constraint to date.

Azimuthal Correlations within Exclusive Dijets with Large Momentum Transfer in Photon-Lead Collisions

The structure of nucleons is multidimensional and depends on the transverse momenta, spatial geometry, and polarization of the constituent partons. Such a structure can be studied using high-energy photons produced in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. The first measurement of the azimuthal angular correlations of exclusively produced events with two jets in photon-lead interactions at large momentum transfer is presented, a process that is considered to be sensitive to the underlying nuclear gluon polarization. This study uses a data sample of ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.38  nb^{-1}, collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measured second harmonic of the correlation between the sum and difference of the two jet transverse momentum vectors is found to be positive, and rising, as the dijet transverse momentum increases. A well-tuned model that has been successful at describing a wide range of proton scattering data from the HERA experiments fails to describe the observed correlations, suggesting the presence of gluon polarization effects.

An analog-AI chip for energy-efficient speech recognition and transcription

Models of artificial intelligence (AI) that have billions of parameters can achieve high accuracy across a range of tasks1,2, but they exacerbate the poor energy efficiency of conventional general-purpose processors, such as graphics processing units or central processing units. Analog in-memory computing (analog-AI)3-7 can provide better energy efficiency by performing matrix-vector multiplications in parallel on 'memory tiles'. However, analog-AI has yet to demonstrate software-equivalent (SWeq) accuracy on models that require many such tiles and efficient communication of neural-network activations between the tiles. Here we present an analog-AI chip that combines 35 million phase-change memory devices across 34 tiles, massively parallel inter-tile communication and analog, low-power peripheral circuitry that can achieve up to 12.4 tera-operations per second per watt (TOPS/W) chip-sustained performance. We demonstrate fully end-to-end SWeq accuracy for a small keyword-spotting network and near-SWeq accuracy on the much larger MLPerf8 recurrent neural-network transducer (RNNT), with more than 45 million weights mapped onto more than 140 million phase-change memory devices across five chips.

Videolaryngoscopy vs. flexible fibrescopy for tracheal intubation in patients with cervical spine immobilisation: a randomised controlled trial

In patients with cervical spine immobilisation, tracheal intubation devices other than a direct laryngoscope are frequently used to facilitate tracheal intubation and avoid related complications. In this randomised controlled trial, we compared videolaryngoscopic and fibrescopic tracheal intubation in patients with a cervical collar. Tracheal intubation was performed using either a videolaryngoscope with a non-channelled Macintosh blade (n = 166) or a flexible fibrescope (n = 164) in patients having elective cervical spine surgery whose neck was immobilised with a cervical collar to simulate a difficult airway. The primary outcome was the first attempt success rate of tracheal intubation. Secondary outcomes were the overall success rate of tracheal intubation; time to tracheal intubation; use of additional airway manoeuvres; and incidence and severity of tracheal intubation-related airway complications. First attempt success rate was higher in the videolaryngoscope group than in the fibrescope group (164/166 (98.8%) vs. 149/164 (90.9%), p = 0.003). Tracheal intubation was successful within three attempts in all patients. Median (IQR [range]) time to tracheal intubation was shorter (50.0 (41.0-72.0 [25.0-170.0]) s vs. 81.0 (65.0-107.0 [24.0-178.0]) s, p < 0.001) and additional airway manoeuvres were less frequent (30/166 (18.1%) vs. 91/164 (55.5%), p < 0.001) in the videolaryngoscope group compared with the fibrescope group. The incidence and severity of intubation-related airway complications were not different between the two groups. When performing tracheal intubation in patients with a cervical collar, videolaryngoscopy with a non-channelled Macintosh blade was superior to flexible fibrescopy.

Search for Nonresonant Pair Production of Highly Energetic Higgs Bosons Decaying to Bottom Quarks

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson (H) pair production via gluon and vector boson (V) fusion is performed in the four-bottom-quark final state, using proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV corresponding to 138  fb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis targets Lorentz-boosted H pairs identified using a graph neural network. It constrains the strengths relative to the standard model of the H self-coupling and the quartic VVHH couplings, κ_{2V}, excluding κ_{2V}=0 for the first time, with a significance of 6.3 standard deviations when other H couplings are fixed to their standard model values.

Search for Higgs Boson and Observation of Z Boson through Their Decay into a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Boosted Topologies in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson (H) produced with transverse momentum (p_{T}) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to a charm quark-antiquark (cc[over ¯]) pair is presented. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. Boosted H→cc[over ¯] decay products are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet and identified using a deep neural network charm tagging technique. The method is validated by measuring the Z→cc[over ¯] decay process, which is observed in association with jets at high p_{T} for the first time with a signal strength of 1.00_{-0.14}^{+0.17}(syst)±0.08(theo)±0.06(stat), defined as the ratio of the observed process rate to the SM expectation. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(H)B(H→cc[over ¯]) is set at 47 (39) times the SM prediction at 95% confidence level.

Measurements of the Higgs boson production cross section and couplings in the W boson pair decay channel in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

Production cross sections of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . The analysis targets Higgs bosons produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and in association with a W or Z boson. Candidate events are required to have at least two charged leptons and moderate missing transverse momentum, targeting events with at least one leptonically decaying W boson originating from the Higgs boson. Results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential cross sections in the simplified template cross section framework, as well as couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions. The data set collected by the CMS detector during 2016-2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The signal strength modifier μ , defined as the ratio of the observed production rate in a given decay channel to the standard model expectation, is measured to be μ = 0 . 95 - 0.09 + 0.10 . All results are found to be compatible with the standard model within the uncertainties.

Measurement of the mass dependence of the transverse momentum of lepton pairs in Drell-Yan production in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The double differential cross sections of the Drell-Yan lepton pair (ℓ + ℓ - , dielectron or dimuon) production are measured as functions of the invariant mass m ℓ ℓ , transverse momentum p T ( ℓ ℓ ) , and φ η ∗ . The φ η ∗ observable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with p T ( ℓ ℓ ) , is used to probe the low-p T ( ℓ ℓ ) region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1Te V are investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various m ℓ ℓ ranges to those in the Z mass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13Te V . Measurements are compared with predictions based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics, including soft-gluon resummation.

CMS pythia 8 colour reconnection tunes based on underlying-event data

New sets of parameter tunes for two of the colour reconnection models, quantum chromodynamics-inspired and gluon-move, implemented in the pythia  8 event generator, are obtained based on the default CMS pythia  8 underlying-event tune, CP5. Measurements sensitive to the underlying event performed by the CMS experiment at centre-of-mass energies s = 7 and 13Te V , and by the CDF experiment at 1.96Te V are used to constrain the parameters of colour reconnection models and multiple-parton interactions simultaneously. The new colour reconnection tunes are compared with various measurements at 1.96, 7, 8, and 13Te V including measurements of the underlying-event, strange-particle multiplicities, jet substructure observables, jet shapes, and colour flow in top quark pair (t t ¯ ) events. The new tunes are also used to estimate the uncertainty related to colour reconnection modelling in the top quark mass measurement using the decay products of t t ¯ events in the semileptonic channel at 13Te V .

Probing Heavy Majorana Neutrinos and the Weinberg Operator through Vector Boson Fusion Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The first search exploiting the vector boson fusion process to probe heavy Majorana neutrinos and the Weinberg operator at the LHC is presented. The search is performed in the same-sign dimuon final state using a proton-proton collision dataset recorded at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. The results are found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. For heavy Majorana neutrinos, constraints on the squared mixing element between the muon and the heavy neutrino are derived in the heavy neutrino mass range 50 GeV-25 TeV; for masses above 650 GeV these are the most stringent constraints from searches at the LHC to date. A first test of the Weinberg operator at colliders provides an observed upper limit at 95% confidence level on the effective μμ Majorana neutrino mass of 10.8 GeV.

Search for light Higgs bosons from supersymmetric cascade decays in pp collisions at s=13TeV

A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs bosons (H 1 ) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in final states with small missing transverse momentum. A data set of LHC pp collisions collected with the CMS detector at s = 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 is used. The search targets events where both H 1 bosons decay into pairs that are reconstructed as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evidence is found for an excess of events beyond the background expectations of the standard model (SM). Results from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM, where a "singlino" of small mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can predominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like H 1 and a singlino-like neutralino of small transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the product of the squark or gluino pair production cross section and the square of the branching fraction of the H 1 in a benchmark model containing almost mass-degenerate gluinos and light-flavour squarks. Under the assumption of an SM-like branching fraction, H 1 bosons with masses in the range 40-120GeV arising from the decays of squarks or gluinos with a mass of 1200-2500GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Measurement of the differential tt¯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass and extraction of the top quark mass in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks

A measurement of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of Lorentz-boosted top quarks is presented. The measurement is performed in the lepton + jets channel of top quark pair production (t t ¯ ) events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay are reconstructed using a single large-radius jet with transverse momentum greater than 400Ge V . The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The differential t t ¯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded to the particle level and is used to extract the top quark mass. The jet mass scale is calibrated using the hadronic W boson decay within the large-radius jet. The uncertainties in the modelling of the final state radiation are reduced by studying angular correlations in the jet substructure. These developments lead to a significant increase in precision, and a top quark mass of 173.06 ± 0.84 Ge V .

Strain and crystallographic identification of the helically concaved gap surfaces of chiral nanoparticles

Identifying the three-dimensional (3D) crystal plane and strain-field distributions of nanocrystals is essential for optical, catalytic, and electronic applications. However, it remains a challenge to image concave surfaces of nanoparticles. Here, we develop a methodology for visualizing the 3D information of chiral gold nanoparticles ≈ 200 nm in size with concave gap structures by Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging. The distribution of the high-Miller-index planes constituting the concave chiral gap is precisely determined. The highly strained region adjacent to the chiral gaps is resolved, which was correlated to the 432-symmetric morphology of the nanoparticles and its corresponding plasmonic properties are numerically predicted from the atomically defined structures. This approach can serve as a comprehensive characterization platform for visualizing the 3D crystallographic and strain distributions of nanoparticles with a few hundred nanometers, especially for applications where structural complexity and local heterogeneity are major determinants, as exemplified in plasmonics.
