Abstract
Background/Objectives: Diabetic foot ulcers are one of the complications in patients with diabetes, which can be caused by infection, neuropathy, and blood vessel disorder. Among them, infection is the most common cause, and if it becomes worse, amputation may be necessary. So, it is important to detect and treat infections early, and determining indicators that can confirm infection is also important. Known infection markers include white blood cells (WBCs), the erythrocyte sediment rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and procalcitonin, but they are not specific to diabetic foot ulcers. Presepsin, also known as soluble CD14, is known to be an early indicator of sepsis. Recent studies have reported that presepsin can be used as an early indicator of infection. This study investigated whether presepsin could be used as an early marker of severe infection in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. Methods: We retrospectively studied 73 patients who were treated for diabetic foot ulcerations from January 2021 to June 2023 at Yeungnam University Hospital. Results: Out of a total of 73 patients, 46 patients underwent amputations with severe infections, and the WBC level, ESR, and CRP, procalcitonin, and presepsin levels were significantly higher in the group of patients who underwent amputations. The cutoff of presepsin, which can predict serious infections that need amputation, was 675 ng/mL. A regression analysis confirmed that presepsin, HbA1c, and osteomyelitis significantly increased the risk of severe infections requiring amputation. Conclusions: Presepsin will be available as an early predictor of patients with severe infections requiring amputations for diabetic foot ulcerations.

Abstract
Understanding the precise effects of defects on the photophysical properties of quantum dots (QDs) is essential to their development with near-unity luminescence. Because of the complicated nature of defects in QDs, the origins and detailed roles of the defects still remain rarely understood. In this regard, we used detailed chemical analysis to investigate the effect of surface defects on the optical properties of InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs by introducing shell defects through controlled trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) etching. TFA treatment on the InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs partially removed the ZnS shell as well as ligands and reduced the quantum yield by generating energetically deep surface traps. The surface defects of QDs by TFA cause charged trap sites inducing an Auger recombination process with a rate of ca. 200 ps. Based on these results, we proposed possible trap-assisted non-radiative decay pathways between the band-edge state and surface deep traps in InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs.

Abstract
We assessed the risk factors for major amputation of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) stages 3b-5. For DFU assessment, in addition to DFU location and presence of infection, ischemia, and neuropathy, vascular calcification was assessed using the medial arterial calcification (MAC) score. Of 210 patients, 26 (12.4%) underwent major amputations. Only the location and extension of DFU, represented by Texas grade differed between the minor and major amputation groups. However, after adjusting for covariates, ulcer location of mid- or hindfoot (vs. forefoot, odds ratio [OR] = 3.27), Texas grades 2 or 3 (vs. grade 0, OR = 5.78), and severe MAC (vs. no MAC, OR = 4.46) was an independent risk factor for major amputation (all P < 0.05). The current use of antiplatelets was a possible protective factor for major amputations (OR = 0.37, P = 0.055). In conclusion, DFU with severe MAC is associated with major amputation in patients with DKD.

Abstract
In lower extremity reconstruction, the recipient vessel often requires long-range mechanical dilation because of extensive vasospasm or plaque formation induced by concomitant atherosclerosis. While a forceps dilator can be used to manipulate and dilate vessels approximately 1 cm from their end, a DeBakey vascular dilator can dilate long-range vessels. The authors successfully performed free flap reconstruction of the lower extremity using the DeBakey vascular dilator. Of the two patients who underwent lower extremity reconstruction, one had extensive vasospasm, and the other had plaques in the recipient arteries. Irrigation with 4% lidocaine and dilation of the lumen with a forceps dilator were insufficient to restore the normal arterial blood flow. Instead, a DeBakey vascular dilator with a 1-mm diameter tip was gently inserted into the lumen. Then, to overcome vessel resistance, the dilator gently advanced approximately 10 cm to dilate the recipient artery. Normal arterial blood flow was gushed out after dilating the vessel lumen using a DeBakey vascular dilator. The vascular anastomosis was performed, and intravenous heparin 5000 IU was administered immediately after anastomosis. Prophylactic low-molecular-weight-heparin (Clexane, 1 mg/kg) was administered subcutaneously to both patients for 14 days. The reconstructed flap survived without necrosis in either patient.

Abstract
The cleaning solution for the post-chemical mechanical planarization (post-CMP) process of tungsten in neutral-alkaline media requires corrosion inhibitors as an additive, especially for advanced devices where the device node size shrinks below 10 nm. In the present study, the corrosion inhibition performance of benzethonium chloride (BTC) is evaluated in neutral-alkaline conditions. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis showed ∼ 90 % of corrosion inhibition efficiency with an optimum concentration of 0.01 wt% BTC at both pH 7 and 11. Langmuir adsorption isotherm, frontier molecular orbital theory, molecular simulation, contact angle, precipitation study, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis were performed to identify the inhibition mechanism of the BTC molecule on the W surface. Based on the proposed mechanism, the electrostatic attraction between the positively charged N atom in the BTC molecule and the negatively charged W surface initiates the adsorption of the molecule. The high dipole moment and large molecular size enhance the physical adsorption of the molecule to the surface. In addition to this, the adsorption isotherm analysis shows that possible chemical interaction with a moderate value of Gibbs free energy change of adsorption exists between the W and BTC molecule. The excellent corrosion inhibition efficiency of BTC on W is confirmed by the frontier molecular orbital theory and molecular dynamic simulation analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have been reported to reduce fibrosis in various tissues. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory role of ASCs on capsule formation by analyzing the histologic, cellular, and molecular changes in a mouse model of peri-implant fibrosis. We also investigated the fate and distribution of ASCs in the peri-implant capsule. METHODS To establish a peri-implant fibrosis model, customized silicone implants were inserted into the dorsal site of C57BL/6 wild-type mice. ASCs were harvested from the fat tissues of transgenic mice that express a green fluorescent protein (GFP-ASCs) and then injected into the peri-implant space of recipient mice. The peri-implant tissues were harvested from postoperative week 2 to 8. We measured the capsule thickness, distribution, and differentiation of GFP-ASCs, as well as the cellular and molecular changes in capsular tissue following ASC treatment. RESULTS Injected GFP-ASCs were distributed within the peri-implant capsule and proliferated. Administration of ASCs reduced the capsule thickness, decreased the number of myofibroblasts and macrophages in the capsule, and decreased the mRNA level of fibrogenic genes within the peri-implant tissue. Angiogenesis was enhanced due to trans-differentiation of ASCs into vascular endothelial cells, and tissue hypoxia was relieved upon ASC treatment. CONCLUSIONS We uncovered that implanted ASCs inhibit capsule formation around the implant by characterizing a series of biological alterations upon ASC treatment and the fate of injected ASCs. These findings highlight the value of ASCs for future clinical applications in the prevention of capsular contracture after implant-based reconstruction surgery.

We present successful laparoscopic treatment of spontaneous rupture of the esophagus.

Abstract
Acoustic cavitation is used for megasonic cleaning in the semiconductor industry, especially of wafers with fragile pattern structures. Control of transient cavitation is necessary to achieve high particle removal efficiency (PRE) and low pattern damage (PD). In this study, the cleaning performance of solutions with different concentrations of dissolved gas (H2) and anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) in DIW (DI water) on silicon (Si) wafers was evaluated in terms of PRE and PD. When only DIW was used, PRE was low and PD was high. An increase in dissolved H2 gas concentration in DIW increased PRE; however, PD also increased accordingly. Thus, we investigated the megasonic cleaning performance of DIW and H2-DIW solutions with various concentrations of the anionic surfactant, SDS. At 20 ppm SDS in DIW, PRE reached a maximum value and then decreased with increasing concentration of SDS. PRE decreased slightly with increasing concentrations of SDS surfactant when dissolved in H2-DIW. Furthermore, PD decreased significantly with increasing concentrations of SDS surfactant in both DIW and H2-DIW cases. A high-speed camera setup was introduced to analyze bubble dynamics under a 0.96 MHz ultrasonic field. Coalescence, agglomeration, and the population of multi-bubbles affected the PRE and PD of silicon wafers differently in the presence of SDS surfactant. We developed a hypothesis to explain the change in bubble characteristics under different chemical environmental conditions.

Abstract
Non-toxic InP-based nanocrystals have been developed for promising candidates for commercial optoelectronic applications and they still require further improvement on photophysical properties, compared to Cd-based quantum dots (QDs), for better device efficiency and long-term stability. It is, therefore, essential to understand the precise mechanism of carrier trapping even in the state-of-the-art InP-based QD with near-unity luminescence. Here, it is shown that using time-resolved spectroscopic measurements of systematically size-controlled InP/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell/shell QDs with the quantum yield close to one, carrier trapping decreases with increasing the energy difference between band-edge and trap states, indicating that the process follows the energy gap law, well known in molecular photochemistry for nonradiative internal conversion between two electronic states. Similar to the molecular view of the energy gap law, it is found that the energy gap between the band-edge and trap states is closely associated with ZnSe phonons that assist carrier trapping into defects in highly luminescent InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs. These findings represent a striking departure from the generally accepted view of carrier trapping mechanism in QDs in the Marcus normal region, providing a step forward understanding how excitons in nanocrystals interact with traps, and offering valuable guidance for making highly efficient and stable InP-based QDs.

Abstract
Colloidal quantum-dots (QDs) are highly attractive materials for various optoelectronic applications owing to their easy maneuverability, high functionality, wide applicability, and low cost of mass-production. QDs usually consist of two components: the inorganic nano-crystalline particle and organic ligands that passivate the surface of the inorganic particle. The organic component is also critical for tuning electronic properties of QDs as well as solubilizing QDs in various solvents. However, despite extensive effort to understand the chemistry of ligands, it has been challenging to develop an efficient and reliable method for identifying and quantifying ligands on the QD surface. Herein, we developed a novel method of analyzing ligands in a mild yet accurate fashion. We found that oxidizing agents, as a heterogeneous catalyst in a different phase from QDs, can efficiently disrupt the interaction between the inorganic particle and organic ligands, and the subsequent simple phase fractionation step can isolate the ligand-containing phase from the oxidizer-containing phase and the insoluble precipitates. Our novel analysis procedure ensures to minimize the exposure of ligand molecules to oxidizing agents as well as to prepare homogeneous samples that can be readily analyzed by diverse analytical techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry.

Abstract
1. Mineral excretion is an issue in the poultry industry. The use of micro minerals in nano form can increase bioavailability and decrease excretion rate. However, information concerning the bioavailability of nano manganese (Mn) in broiler chicks is limited.2. This experiment studied the influences of hot-melt extrusion (HME)-processed manganese sulphate on body weight gain, Mn bioavailability, nutrient digestibility and meat quality in broiler chicks fed a corn-soybean meal-based diet as a starter and grower phase. A total of 700 birds (Ross 308, 1-day-old) were randomly placed in 35 cages (20 birds per cage). The broiler chicks were fed one of seven experimental diets, which consisted of a control (without supplemental Mn), different levels of MnSO4 (IN-Mn60; 60, 120, and 200 mg/kg), or HME MnSO4 (HME-Mn; 60, 120, and 200 mg/kg).3. There was an increased serum Mn content in broilers fed diet supplemented with HME-Mn. In the grower phase, increased dietary Mn levels elevated the concentrations in the serum, liver, and tibia. There were increases in the excreta Mn content of broilers fed increasing levels. The supplementation of HME-Mn showed a lower percentage of abdominal fat compared with the IN-Mn treatment diets. Supplementation with HME-Mn decreased intramuscular fat compared with the diets supplemented with IN-Mn. The supplementation of HME-Mn decreased the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) at d 6 of age. The HME-Mn source showed a greater decrease in TBARS compared with the IN-Mn treatment.4. In conclusion, HME processing increased bioavailability and could be used as an environmentally friendly method to facilitate lower levels of Mn in the diet of broiler chickens.

Abstract
AIMS Recovering DNA of airborne micro-organisms (AM) from air is a challenging task. We compared five membrane filters for bioaerosol sampling-mixed cellulose ester (MCE), polyethersulfone (PES), polyamide (PA), polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based on their bacterial, fungal and eukaryotic DNA recoveries. METHODS AND RESULTS Bacterial, fungal and eukaryotic populations were quantified using quantitative PCR. With a bacterial consortium, PTFE exhibited the best recovery efficiency (113%), followed by PA (92%), PES (86%), MCE (48%) and PVDF (1%). When filters were compared with air, PA was used as a control to normalize results from the others. The bacterial, fungal and eukaryotic DNA recovery ratios were markedly greater in PES (9·3, 11·5 and 10·3 respectively) than in the remaining. Eukaryotic MiSeq sequencing revealed that PES recovered a more diverse and considerably richer assemblage (richness ratios, 4·97 vs ≤ 1·16 for PES vs the others). Rank abundance distribution analysis showed that distribution tails were longer (>4 times) in PES, but these did not differ between the remaining and PA. Community comparison showed that PES exhibited a lower variation across trials than the PA, while the remaining did not. CONCLUSIONS PES filter markedly outperformed the other filters in quantitative and qualitative recovery of AM. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Our findings demonstrated the importance of filter selection for sampling AM.

Abstract
Various degrees of pulmonary insufficiency (PI) (PaO2 ≤60 mm Hg, SaO2 ≤90%) are diagnosed in most of patients with severe acute stroke (AS). Frequency and severity of PI positively correlates with the severity of AS. PI worsens patient's condition, prolongs the hospitalization period, and increases the probability of fatal outcome. Early clinical signs of PI may be undiagnosed due to the severity of stroke and thus not treated. The initiating pathogenic mechanism of PI is stress-related activation of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and systemic immunosuppression. In severe stroke with mass effect, the rapid and significant increase in intracranial pressure may additionally activate the SNS. Risk factors of PI include older age, previous pulmonary disease, prolonged supine position, respiratory muscle dysfunction, apnea, and concomitant somatic diseases. Decompensation of somatic diseases leads to multiple stage reactions with facilitation of functional and morphologic changes in the pulmonary system, hypoxemia and hypoxia, promotes infectious complications and multiple organ failure and worsens neurological outcome. Diagnosis and treatment of PI in AS decreases mortality and improves rehabilitation prognosis.

Abstract
AIMS Quorum quenching (QQ) is an attractive strategy for mitigating biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). However, the effects of QQ on the activated sludge (AS) process have not been adequately evaluated. This study investigated the long-term effects of QQ on a laboratory-scale anoxic-oxic MBR, focusing on AS performance and microbial community. METHODS AND RESULTS Anoxic-oxic MBRs with and without QQ were operated for 91 days. QQ did not affect COD and TN removal efficiencies over the experimental period, during which its activity remained >90%. QQ reduced floc size by approximately 8% but had no effect on biomass concentration. AS microbial communities were regularly analysed using massively parallel sequencing. AS bacterial communities were temporally dynamic irrespective of QQ presence, for example, a temporal increase in bacterial diversity and a temporal decay of community similarity. QQ counteracted the temporal change in diversity and the temporal distance-community decay. Community comparison revealed that QQ changed the successional trajectory of the AS community at a late period, because it decelerated temporal changes of specific members, such as Thiothrix and Sphingomonadaceae*. Correlation networks revealed that QQ increased network clustering, complexity and density. The combined results suggest that the tighter microbial association by QQ increased the community resistance. CONCLUSIONS QQ can enhance the diversity and stability of the AS community in MBR by counteracting the innate temporal change in community structure. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Our findings are useful for the further advancement of QQ-based strategies in engineered microbial environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between psoriasis and risk of malignancy has not been thoroughly evaluated in a large longitudinal cohort of Asian population. OBJECTIVE To determine the long-term risk of malignancy in Korean adult patients with psoriasis. METHODS We conducted a nationwide population-based prospective cohort study with a 15-year observational period. During the baseline period (1997-2000), total 1 773 786 Korean subjects who received health insurance from the National Health Insurance System were enrolled and 5788 subjects were defined as a psoriasis group. The number of new-onset malignancy was collected during the observational period (2001-2015). RESULTS Patients with psoriasis had a higher adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) for development of overall malignancy [aHR 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00-1.18] and gastric cancer (aHR 1.31, 95% CI 1.08-1.58) compared to controls. The risks of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and non-melanoma skin cancer were significantly increased only in patients with psoriasis who received systemic treatments (aHR 2.86, 95% CI 1.07-7.61 and aHR 3.93, 95% CI 1.47-10.47, respectively). CONCLUSION Psoriasis is associated with long-term risk for overall malignancy in Koreans, which was primarily driven by the increased risk of gastric cancer.

Background
In patients with early stage breast cancer, regional nodal irradiation (RNI) is added to whole breast irradiation (WBI) in order to control microscopic regional disease and to prevent systemic spread of cancer. According to recent randomized trials (MA.20 and EORTC 22922-10925), prophylactic RNI was associated with improvement in disease-free survival (DFS) in the patients with high-risk node negative or pN1 breast cancer. However, systemic agents now known to improve loco-regional control, such as taxane or endocrine therapy, were prescribed to a small percentage of patients in the studies. The benefit of RNI found in the previous studies might be attributed to incorporation of less effective systemic treatments. The impact of prophylactic RNI in pN1 breast cancer should be evaluated in the patients receiving modern systemic treatment. The current study was conducted to compare the effect of post-lumpectomy WBI vs WBI plus RNI on DFS in pN1 breast cancer patients who received adjuvant taxane-based chemotherapy.
Methods
This study is a multicenter, phase 3, randomized controlled non-inferiority trial (NCT03269981). Eligibility criteria are ≥ 20 years female; pathologically proven invasive carcinoma of the breast; one to three positive axillary lymph nodes (pN1) in pathologic specimen; receiving breast-conserving surgery followed by taxane-based chemotherapy; having adjuvant endocrine therapy or anti-HER2 treatment according to molecular subtype of tumor. Patients are randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive WBI or WBI plus RNI. Patient randomization was stratified by molecular subtype of tumor (i.e. luminal A/luminal B/luminal HER2/HER2-enriched/triple-negative) and methods of axillary management (i.e. sentinel lymph node biopsy/axillary lymph node dissection). The primary outcome is DFS. The secondary outcomes include DFS according to molecular subtype, treatment-related toxicity, and patient's quality of life per EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23. Patients will be followed for survival and disease recurrence for seven years. A total of 1,926 patients are planned to be enrolled, with recruitment initiated in April 2017. As of June 2018, a total of 236 patients were enrolled.

Abstract
A large-aperture beam splitter has been developed for simultaneous operation of two millimeter-wave diagnostics employing different probe beams in the frequency and polarization, microwave imaging reflectometer (∼85 GHz X-mode), and collective scattering system (300 GHz O-mode), on the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research device. The beam splitter was designed based on a polarizer concept (i.e., grid of metal strips on a thin dielectric sheet), and this can be an optimal solution for these two diagnostics. Fabrication of the strips with uniform sub-millimeter width and spacing on a large dielectric sheet was achieved with an etching technique, and the laboratory test results on the reflection and transmission ratio are in good agreement with design values.

Abstract
Treatment of InP colloidal quantum dots (QDs) with hydrofluoric acid (HF) has been an effective method to improve their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) without growing a shell. Previous work has shown that this can occur through the dissolution of the fluorinated phosphorus and subsequent passivation of indium on the reconstructed surface by excess ligands. In this article, we demonstrate that very significant luminescence enhancements occur at lower HF exposure though a different mechanism. At lower exposure to HF, the main role of the fluoride ions is to directly passivate the surface indium dangling bonds in the form of atomic ligands. The PLQY enhancement in this case is accompanied by red shifts of the emission and absorption peaks rather than blue shifts caused by etching as seen at higher exposures. Density functional theory shows that the surface fluorination is thermodynamically preferred and that the observed spectral characteristics might be due to greater exciton delocalization over the outermost surface layer of the InP QDs as well as alteration of the optical oscillator strength by the highly electronegative fluoride layer. Passivation of surface indium with fluorides can be applied to other indium-based QDs. PLQY of InAs QDs could also be increased by an order of magnitude via fluorination. We fabricated fluorinated InAs QD-based electrical devices exhibiting improved switching and higher mobility than those of 1,2-ethanedithiol cross-linked QD devices. The effective surface passivation eliminates persistent photoconductivity usually found in InAs QD-based solid films.

Abstract
AIMS Microbial consortia can be more efficient at biological processes than single isolates. The purposes of this study were to design and evaluate a synthetic microbial consortium containing the methanotroph Methylocystis sp. M6 and the helper Hyphomicrobium sp. NM3, and develop a novel methanotrophic process for this consortium utilizing a dialysis membrane. METHODS AND RESULTS Hyphomicrobium increased the methane-oxidation rate (MOR), biomass and stability at a dilution rate of 0·067 day-1 in fed-batch co-culture. qRT-PCR showed that Methylocystis population increased gradually with time, whereas Hyphomicrobium population remained stable despite cell washing, confirming synergistic population interaction. At 0·1 day-1 , spiking of Hyphomicrobium effectively increased the methanotrophic activity, after which Hyphomicrobium population decreased with time, indicating that the consortium is optimal at <0·1 day-1 . When Hyphomicrobium was grown in dialysis membrane within the bioreactor, MOR increased linearly up to 155·1 ± 1·0 mmol l-1 day-1 at 0·067, 0·1, 0·2 and 0·4 day-1 , which is the highest observed value for a methanotrophic reactor. CONCLUSIONS Hyphomicrobium sp. NM3 is a promising helper micro-organism for methanotrophs. Hyphomicrobium-methanotroph consortia used concurrently with existing methods can produce an efficient and stable methane oxidation system. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This novel methanotrophic process is superior to those previously reported in the literature, and can provide efficient and stable methane oxidation.

Abstract
Human pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) represent an opportunity to study human development in vitro, to model diseases in a dish, to screen drugs as well as to provide an unlimited and ethically unimpeded source of therapeutic cells. Cortical GABAergic interneurons, which are generated from Medial Ganglionic Eminence (MGE) cells and Caudal Ganglionic Eminence (CGE) cells during embryonic development, regulate cortical neural networks by providing inhibitory inputs. Their malfunction, resulting in failure to intricately regulate neural circuit balance, has been implicated in brain diseases, such as schizophrenia, autism and epilepsy. In this study, using combinatorial and temporal modulation of developmentally relevant dorsoventral and rostrocaudal signaling pathways, we efficiently generated MGE cells vs. CGE cells from human PSCs, which predominantly generate Parvalbumin-expressing or Somatostatin-expressing interneurons vs. Calretinin-expressing interneurons, respectively. Efficient generation of specific differentiated progenies of hPSCs as shown in this study will be a pivotal step to realize the full potential of hPSCs for regenerative medicine, developmental studies, disease modeling, bioassay, and drug screening.

Abstract
Background The Kirschner wire (K-wire) technique allows stable fixation of bone fragments without periosteal dissection, which often lead to bone segment scattering and loss. The authors used the K-wire fixation to simplify the treatment of laborious comminuted zygomatic bone fracture and report outcomes following the operation. Methods A single-institution retrospective review was performed for all patients with comminuted zygomatic bone fractures between January 2010 and December 2013. In each patient, the zygoma was reduced and fixed with K-wire, which was drilled from the cheek bone and into the contralateral nasal cavity. For severely displaced fractures, the zygomaticofrontal suture was first fixated with a microplate and the K-wire was used to increase the stability of fixation. Each wire was removed approximately 4 weeks after surgery. Surgical outcomes were evaluated for malar eminence, cheek symmetry, Kwire site scar, and complications (based on a 4-point scale from 0 to 3, where 0 point is 'poor' and 3 points is 'excellent'). Results The review identified 25 patients meeting inclusion criteria (21 men and 4 women). The mean age was 52 years (range, 15-73 years). The mean follow up duration was 6.2 months. The mean operation time was 21 minutes for K-wire alone (n=7) and 52 minutes for K-wire and plate fixation (n=18). Patients who had received K-wire only fixation had severe underlying diseases or accompanying injuries. The mean postoperative evaluation scores were 2.8 for malar contour and 2.7 for K-wire site scars. The mean patient satisfaction was 2.7. There was one case of inflammation due to the K-wire. Conclusion The use of K-wire technique was associated with high patient satisfaction in our review. K-wire fixation technique is useful in patient who require reduction of zygomatic bone fractures in a short operating time.

Abstract
GABAergic interneurons regulate cortical neural networks by providing inhibitory inputs, and their malfunction, resulting in failure to intricately regulate neural circuit balance, is implicated in brain diseases such as Schizophrenia, Autism, and Epilepsy. During early development, GABAergic interneuron progenitors arise from the ventral telencephalic area such as medial ganglionic eminence (MGE) and caudal ganglionic eminence (CGE) by the actions of secreted signaling molecules from nearby organizers, and migrate to their target sites where they form local synaptic connections. In this study, using combinatorial and temporal modulation of developmentally relevant dorsoventral and rostrocaudal signaling pathways (SHH, Wnt, and FGF8), we efficiently generated MGE cells from multiple human pluripotent stem cells. Most importantly, modulation of FGF8/FGF19 signaling efficiently directed MGE versus CGE differentiation. Human MGE cells spontaneously differentiated into Lhx6-expressing GABAergic interneurons and showed migratory properties. These human MGE-derived neurons generated GABA, fired action potentials, and displayed robust GABAergic postsynaptic activity. Transplantation into rodent brains results in well-contained neural grafts enriched with GABAergic interneurons that migrate in the host and mature to express somatostatin or parvalbumin. Thus, we propose that signaling modulation recapitulating normal developmental patterns efficiently generate human GABAergic interneurons. This strategy represents a novel tool in regenerative medicine, developmental studies, disease modeling, bioassay, and drug screening.

Abstract
In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of novel hybrid nanocoating based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on anodized aluminum surfaces (AAO). The hybrid nanocoating was deposited by number of methods which include spray coating, spin coating and dip coating. The bonding of nanocoating with metal surface is an important parameter for successful modification of the metal surfaces. The improved adhesion of nanocoating on metal surfaces could be attributed to chemical bonding of sol-gel nanocoating with anodized surfaces. The nanocoated anodized aluminum surfaces showed superior adhesion and excellent anticorrosive properties. The nanocoated panels showed enhanced galvanic protection comparable to 80% of titanium metal as determined by galvanic corrosion measurements. It also showed higher thermal conductivities than stainless steel and bare anodized surfaces.

Abstract
AIM The study aimed to determine the adequacy of the distal margin in patients having preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by restorative surgery for rectal cancer. METHOD A total of 368 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated for cure at our institution between July 1999 and March 2009 were included in the study. All underwent preoperative CRT and sphincter-sparing surgery. The distal margin and other factors were examined for their effect on recurrence and survival. The median duration of follow-up was 48 months. RESULTS The length of distal margin ranged from 0 to 9.0 cm (median 1.5 cm). The pelvic control and disease-free survival rates at 5 years for patients with a margin of ≤ 3 mm were no different from those in whom it was > 3 mm (P = 0.6 and 0.8). The 5-year pelvic control rates between the ≤ 3 mm and > 3 mm groups were 66.7 and 86.2% in patients with a ypT3-4 tumour (P = 0.049) and 70.0 and 89.1% in patients who showed no response to CRT (P = 0.039). CONCLUSION The results suggest that a distal margin of < 3 mm in the surgical specimen after preoperative CRT is associated with a lower rate of pelvic tumour control at 5 years in patients with Stage ypT3-4 tumours or in those who do not respond to CRT.

Abstract
Methods for estimating the cord blood (CB) inventory size required vary according to the ethnic diversity of the HLA, degree of HLA matching and HLA-typing resolution. We estimated the CB inventory size required using 7190 stored CB units (CBU) and 2450 patients who were awaiting or underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. With high-resolution typing of HLA-A, B and DRB1, 94.6% of Korean patients could find CBUs in 100 000 CBUs with a 5/6 match, and 95.7% could find CBUs in 5000 CBUs with a 4/6 match. With low-resolution typing of HLA-A and B and high-resolution typing of leukocyte antigen-DRB1, 95% of patients could find CBUs in 50 000 CBUs with a 5/6 match, and 96.7% could find CBUs in 3000 CBUs with a 4/6 match. With additional high-resolution typing for HLA-A and B, which could improve transplantation outcome, the size of the CB inventory would need to increase twofold for Koreans.

Abstract
Utilization of panoramic X-ray device is getting wider. Panoramic X-ray has low resolution than general X-ray device and it occurs to distortion by deviation of image synthesis. Due to structural problems, it has been used restrictively to identify of tooth structure, not for whole head. Therefore, it designed and produced panoramic X-ray device which is possible to diagnostic coverage can be extended and had to be adjusted interval control between X-ray generator and image processing for whole of Maxillofacia's diagnosis. Produced panoramic X-ray device is composed basically of short image synthesis. In addition, it was confirmed the results by used the device which was applied deviation of the brightness of the image, filter to improve the location of the deviation and interpolation method. In this study, it was used 13 images including the front. It occurs to brightness deviation, position deviation, and geometric correction when synthesis of image, but it had been solved by deviation improvement software and a change of CCD camera's scan line which is used for image acquisition. Therefore, it confirmed expansion possibility of utilization range to commonly used panoramic X-ray device.

Abstract
This study investigated whether killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genes and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-C alleles, receptors and ligands of natural killer cells are associated with the development of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical disease in Korean women. Blood samples from 132 women with HPV-related cervical disease and 159 women without HPV infection were collected for genotyping of KIR genes and HLA-C alleles. Although no relationship was found between KIR genes and HPV-related cervical disease, a significant relationship was found between HLA-C alleles as ligands of KIR and HPV-related cervical disease. Women with HPV-related cervical disease were found to be significantly more likely to carry HLA-C*0303, particularly those with HPV 16 or 18 infection, and less likely to carry HLA-C*01 compared to women without HPV infection. HLA-C*0303 was found to confer susceptibility to HPV-related cervical disease, whereas HLA-C*01 was found to confer a protective effect against HPV-related cervical disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) and pompholyx are clinically characterized by acute eruptions of vesicles or pustules on the palms or soles. OBJECTIVES This study aims to compare the expression of certain inflammatory mediator genes and proteins between patients with PPP and pompholyx using skin tissue samples. METHODS Skin biopsies obtained from lesional skin from patients with PPP (n = 7) and pompholyx (n = 5) were analysed by quantitative RT-PCR to measure the mRNA levels of nine genes, including IL-4, IL-8, IL-9, IL-17, IL-22, IFN-γ, CCL-20, granzyme and perforin. For immunohistochemical analysis, 34 paraffin-embedded skin specimens (PPP, n = 22; pompholyx, n = 12) were stained with anti-IL-8, IL-17A, IL-22 and granzyme B antibodies. RESULTS Of genes analysed, IL-8 and IL-17A mRNA expression levels were significantly higher in the PPP group than the pompholyx group (P = 0.012 in both), whereas the mRNA expression of granzyme B was significantly higher in pompholyx when compared with PPP (P = 0.004). Regarding the IL-17A immunohistochemical staining, tissue from the PPP lesions contained significantly more IL-17A(+) cells in both the epidermis and papillary dermis when compared with pompholyx (P < 0.001 and P = 0.019 respectively). Moreover, the intensity of the IL-8 immunoreactivity was also greater in the PPP skin lesions than the pompholyx tissue (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS IL-8 and IL-17A, both are increased in PPP tissue, may represent important immunologic mediators that help to differentiate this clinical entity from pompholyx. This study may provide useful clues in distinguishing PPP from pompholyx, as well as helping to understand the pathogeneses of these two diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gynecomastia is a benign, excessive development of the male breast that occurs at an overall incidence of 32-36 %. The authors effectively removed peripheral fat tissues with power-assisted liposuction (PAL) and periareolar glandular tissues with a cartilage shaver in a series of patients. The small periareolar incisions were not easily recognized. METHODS Between February 2010 and April 2012, the charts of 15 patients (28 breasts) treated with PAL and a cartilage shaver were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS The mean volume of fat tissue removed with liposuction was 319 mL, and the mean volume of glandular tissue removed with the cartilage shaver was 70 mL. The mean follow-up period was 11.2 months. No infection, nipple-areola complex necrosis, nipple retraction, or saucer deformity was encountered in this series. Intraoperative bleeding occurred in one patient. Mild asymmetries developed in three patients. CONCLUSIONS Use of PAL and a cartilage shaver for the treatment of gynecomastia allows for effective removal of both the fat and the glandular tissue of the breast through a minimal periareolar incision. This technique can achieve excellent aesthetic results with inconspicuous scarring. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Abstract
In this report, the authors present the experience on the reconstruction of the totally degloved foot and extremely long soft tissue defect of a lower limb with the combined free tissue transfer using the anterolateral thigh flap as a link in two male patients between October 2009 and December 2010. The anterolateral thigh flap has been commonly used as a link between the recipient site and the distal flap. The anterolateral thigh flap and latissimus dorsi muscle flap were selected for the distal flap, according to their reconstructive needs. Two combined free flaps survived without major complication. The authors could salvage of the lower extremity through the reconstruction of complex wound with the combined free tissue transfer using the anterolateral thigh flap as a link. This combined flap may be an alternative for reconstruction of complex soft tissue defect in the lower extremity.

Abstract
We fabricated an radio frequency (RF) carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNTFET) whose electrode shapes were standard RF designed ground-signal-ground (GSG)-type pads. The S-parameters measured from our RF CNTFET in the frequency range up to 6 GHz were fitted with an RF equivalent circuit, and the extracted gate capacitance was shown to be the capacitance value of the series combination of the electrostatic capacitance and the quantum capacitance. The effect of the channel resistance and the kinetic inductance was also discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rosacea is a chronic dermatosis that is usually confined to the face. A pulsed dye laser (PDL) system has been proven to be effective in treating rosacea-associated erythema and telangiectasias. Niacin is a cutaneous vasodilator that can increase the chromophore through increased blood flow. OBJECTIVES We hypothesized that increased blood flow by pretreatment with topical niacin could enhance the effect of PDL in the treatment of rosacea. METHODS Eighteen Korean patients with rosacea were recruited. Three sessions of 585-nm PDL using a subpurpuragenic dose with and without pretreatment with niacin cream were performed on randomly assigned half-faces at 3-week intervals. Erythema was assessed objectively by a polarization colour imaging system, and evaluations were also made by three blinded dermatologists. Patient satisfaction was evaluated using a 10-point visual analogue scale. RESULTS Fifteen patients completed this study. All patients showed an improvement in erythema after three sessions of PDL treatment both with and without niacin pretreatment (P = 0·023 and P = 0·009, respectively). There was no significant difference in the improvement of objective erythema between the two sides. However, based on physician assessment the overall clinical improvement on the niacin side was significantly higher (P = 0·005), and patient satisfaction was also higher on the niacin-pretreated side (P = 0·007). There were no remarkable side-effects, with the exception of transient erythema and oedema. CONCLUSIONS Pretreatment with topical niacin safely enhanced the effect of 585-nm PDL treatment of rosacea-associated erythema in Koreans. Application of niacin can be helpful in overcoming the relatively lower effect of subpurpuragenic PDL in dark-skinned Asians.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Potentially harmful effects of irradiation on the developing central nervous system have been well documented. We report 2 pediatric patients with moyamoya syndrome developed after irradiation. CASE A 3-year-old girl had received 4,860 cGy of postoperative radiation for optic pathway glioma. Cerebral angiography 7 months after completion of the radiation therapy revealed progressive cerebral arterial occlusive disease, involving the internal carotid artery on either side of the circle of Willis, with abnormal netlike vessels. Another 5-year-old girl had received 3,600 cGy of postoperative radiation on the cerebrum for a medulloblastoma. Two years later, she was diagnosed with moyamoya syndrome and treated with indirect revascularization. She died due to further progressive obstruction of the right M1 and A1 on the unoperated hemisphere, in spite of well-developed collateral circulation from the superficial temporal artery and middle meningeal artery on the operated left hemisphere. We suggest that radiation therapy with portals typically including carotid siphon may particularly cause vascular damage, regardless of the tumor pathology and lead to radiation-induced moyamoya syndrome. The prognosis may be poorer in case of poor collateral flow and rapid progression. The radiation therapy may cause fatal vascular damage so it should be taken into consideration when a treatment plan is being formulated for young patients.

Abstract
We propose a process for fabricating nanodot arrays with a pitch size of less than 25 nm. The process consists of localized ion implantation in a metal thin film on a Si wafer using a focused ion beam (FIB), followed by chemical etching. This process utilizes the etching resistivity changes of the ion beam irradiated region that result from metal silicide formation by ion implantation. To control the nanodot diameter, a threshold ion dose model is proposed using the Gaussian distribution of the ion beam intensities. The process is verified by fabricating nanodots with various diameters. The mechanism of etching resistivity is investigated via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES).

Abstract
AIM Colorectal cancer is associated with inflammatory bowel disease. The mechanisms of how different genetic make-ups of cytokines might influence the individual susceptibility to develop particular types of tumours are still unknown. The authors analysed the association between genetic polymorphisms in cytokine/cytokine receptor genes and the risk of colorectal cancer in a Korean population. METHOD The authors assessed polymorphisms of the interleukin: IL-1, IL-1R, IL-2, IL-4, IL-4R, IL-10, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, IFN-γ genes in Korean patients with colorectal cancer (n = 170) and in a normal healthy control group (n = 130) to investigate the association between theses cytokine gene polymorphisms and the risk of colorectal cancer. RESULTS The IL-4R 1902*T allele was found to be associated with an increased risk of colon cancer (P < 0.01, OR = 2.0) and rectal cancer (P < 0.05, OR = 1.8). The IL-4R 1902*C allele was associated with a decreased risk of both colon cancer (P < 0.01, OR = 0.51) and rectal cancer (P < 0.05, OR = 0.5). The TFG-β1 10*T allele was found to be associated with an increased risk of colon cancer (P < 0.00, OR = 2.3) and the TFG-β1 10*C allele with a decreased risk of colon cancer (P < 0.00, OR = 0.43). CONCLUSION These results suggest that the genetic polymorphisms of IL-4R and TGF-β1 are associated with the risk of colorectal cancer in a Korean population.

Abstract
Two types of multistack nanolines (MNLs), Si-substrate (Si)/siliconoxynitride (SiON)/amorphous Si (a-Si)/ SiO(2) and Si/ SiO(2) /polycrystalline Si (poly-Si)/ SiO(2) were used to measure the collapse force and to investigate their collapse behavior by an atomic force microscope (AFM). The Si/SiON/a-Si/ SiO(2) MNL showed a larger length of fragment in the collapse patterns at a smaller collapse force. The Si/ SiO(2) /poly-Si/ SiO(2) MNL, however, demonstrated a smaller length of fragment at a higher applied collapse force. The collapse forces increased by the square of the linewidth in both Si/SiON/a-Si/ SiO(2) and Si/SiO(2) /poly-Si/ SiO(2) MNLs. Once an AFM tip touches an Si/SiON/a-Si/ SiO(2) line, which is a softer MNL, it was delaminated first at the Si/SiON interface. One end of the delaminated line was first broken and then the other end was bent until it was broken. A harder MNL, Si/ SiO(2) /poly-Si/ SiO(2), however, was broken at two ends simultaneously after the delamination occurred at the Si/ SiO(2) /poly-Si interface. The different collapse behaviors were attributed to the magnitude of adhesion forces at the stack material interfaces and the mechanical strength of MNLs.

Abstract
We report 2 cases of arachnoid cysts related to a head trauma. The first case involved a 1-year-old girl who developed an arachnoid cyst 7 months after suffering a head trauma due to a motor vehicle accident, and the second case involved a 1-year-old boy whose arachnoid cyst was first noted 2 months subsequent to his premature birth. We present the serial imaging for both cases. Choi and Kim [Pediatr Neurosurg 1998;29:260-266] postulated that head trauma in infancy may contribute to the pathogenesis of arachnoid cysts in some cases. In presenting our cases, we support this hypothesis, and further postulate that the arachnoid cysts may in fact be localized hydrocephali, triggered either by head trauma or by prematurity.

Abstract
Cerebral embolic infarction is the most common neurologic complication of cardiac myxoma (CM). Development of cerebral aneurysms in CM is very rare. We present a 64-year-old woman with acute cerebral infarction and multiple cerebral aneurysms complicated by CM. The aneurysms were multiple, fusiform-shaped, and located in distal branch of major cerebral arteries. The serum interleukin (IL)-6 was highly elevated, which was normalized after surgical resection of CM. There was no regression of aneurysms on follow-up neuroimaging. Multiple cerebral aneurysms in CM are rare condition. Highly elevated serum IL-6 may be associated with increased risk of cerebral aneurysmal formation.

Abstract
The current gene transfer technology for single chain (scFv)-based chimeric immune receptor (CIR) has relied on retrovirus and lentivirus vectors which require a long time to obtain sufficient number of transduced cells and stably incorporate into genome. To ameliorate these limitations, we applied RNA electroporation to human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) activated with anti-CD3 antibody and interleukin-2 (IL-2) for 3 days and assessed that PBL transiently expressing anti-Her-2/neu CIR (CIR-PBL) containing signaling portion of CD28 and CD3zeta could elicit strong cytotoxicity in vitro and antitumor responses in vivo. The CIR-PBL expressed high level of CIR in CD4+, CD8+ and CD56+ cells. Her-2/neu-specific stimulation induced secretion of type-I cytokines including interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), IL-8 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, and IFN-gamma secretion was mainly mediated by CD8+ T cells. CIR-PBL specifically killed SKOV3 cell line expressing Her-2/neu. Adoptive transfer of CIR-PBL in SKOV3 xenograft model led to significant inhibition of tumor growth compared with transfer of mock-transduced PBL and showed higher inhibition than those with Herceptin, humanized monoclonal antibody specific for Her-2/neu. These results provided evidence that electroporation of CIR RNA to human PBLs could be used for rapid generation and high number of therapeutic antigen-specific T cells for adoptive immunotherapy.

Abstract
OBJECT A radiation dose of 40-50 Gy is able to produce a cure rate of more than 90% in intracranial pure germinoma. However, many attempts have been made to reduce the dose and volume of radiation without compromising the disease control rate because of the toxicity of irradiation. This retrospective study is intended to provide the physician with an appropriate therapeutic strategy. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed a series of 10 recurrent germinomas among 117 germinomas diagnosed histologically or clinically between 1979 and 2002. These patients involved underwent three different treatment modalities; radiation alone (N = 71), chemotherapy alone (N = 9), and combined therapy (N = 37). The 10-year overall and relapse-free survival rates were 97 and 93% in the radiation alone group, 89 and 67% in the chemotherapy alone group, and 92 and 92% in the combined therapy group, respectively. As expected, both radiation therapy and combined therapy were effective in controlling the disease. Tumor recurrence was closely related to the volume of radiation but not to the dose of radiation. If the tumor bed and craniospinal axis were fully covered, the radiation dose might be reduced. Chemotherapy alone showed earlier recurrence and a higher tumor recurrence rate. In the case of combined therapy, chemotherapy was useful in reducing the radiation dose but revealed some toxicity (death of two patients). CONCLUSIONS The investigation of a possible further dose reduction seems worthwhile. Radiation therapy alone with a dose of less than 40 Gy should be compared with ongoing chemotherapeutic protocols combined with low-dose irradiation.
