Diet composition and resource overlap of sympatric native and introduced salmonids across neighboring streams during a peak discharge event

Species assemblages composed of non-native and native fishes are found in freshwater systems throughout the world, and interactions such as interspecific competition that may negatively affect native species are expected when non-native species are present. In the Smith River watershed, Montana, rainbow trout were introduced by 1930. Native mountain whitefish and non-native rainbow trout have presumably occurred in sympatry since the introduction of rainbow trout; however, knowledge about how these two species compete with one another for food resources is sparse. We quantified diet compositions of rainbow trout and mountain whitefish in the mainstem Smith River and in a tributary to the Smith River-Sheep Creek-to determine the degree of overlap in the diets of mountain whitefish and rainbow trout in the Smith River and between the mainstem Smith River and a tributary stream. Rainbow trout and mountain whitefish had generalist feeding strategies, which probably contribute to the amicable coexistence of these species. Diet overlap between rainbow trout and mountain whitefish was high (Pianka's index value = 0.85) in the Smith River and moderate in Sheep Creek (Pianka's index value = 0.57). Despite overlap in diets, some resource partitioning may alleviate resource competition (e.g., rainbow trout consumed far more Oligochaeta than mountain whitefish but fewer Brachycentridae and Chironomidae). Diet composition of rainbow trout and mountain whitefish did not differ greatly between the Smith River and Sheep Creek. Prey categories most commonly used by mountain whitefish at the population and individual levels (i.e., Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera) are sensitive taxa and many species within these orders have experienced extinctions and population declines. Therefore, future changes in resource availability or competition could be of concern.

A paradoxical knowledge gap in science for critically endangered fishes and game fishes during the sixth mass extinction

Despite unprecedented scientific productivity, Earth is undergoing a sixth mass extinction. The disconnect between scientific output and species conservation may be related to scientists studying the wrong species. Given fishes have a high extinction rate, we assessed the paradox between scientific productivity and science needed for conservation by comparing scientific output created for critically endangered fishes and game fishes. We searched 197,866 articles (1964–2018) in 112 journals for articles on 460 critically endangered fishes, 297 game fishes, and 35 fishes classified as critically endangered and game fish—our analysis included freshwater and marine species. Only 3% of the articles in the final database were on critically endangered fishes; 82% of critically endangered fishes had zero articles. The difference between the number of articles on game fishes and critically endangered fishes increased temporally with more articles on game fishes during the extinction crisis. Countries with 10 or more critically endangered fishes averaged only 17 articles from 1964 to 2018. Countries with the most critically endangered fishes are most in need of science. More scientific knowledge is needed on critically endangered fishes to meet the challenges of conserving fishes during the sixth mass extinction.

The phylogenetic relationships of Caulobacter, Asticcacaulis and Brevundimonas species and their taxonomic implications

The phylogenetic relationships among the species of Caulobacter, Asticcacaulis and Brevundimonas were studied by comparison of their 16S rDNA sequences. The analysis of almost complete sequences confirmed the early evolutionary divergence of the freshwater and marine species of Caulobacter reported previously [Stahl, D. A., Key, R., Flesher, B. & Smit, J. (1992). J Bacteriol 174, 2193-2198]. The freshwater species formed two distinct clusters. One cluster contained the species Caulobacter bacteroides, Caulobacter crescentus, Caulobacter fusiformis and Caulobacter henricii. C. bacteroides and C. fusiformis are very closely related (sequence identity 99.8%). The second cluster was not exclusive and contained the specis Caulobacter intermedius, Caulobacter subvibrioides and Caulobacter variabilis, as well as Brevundimonas diminuta and Brevundimonas vesicularis. The marine species Caulobacter halobacteroides and Caulobacter maris were very closely related, with a sequence identity of 99.7%. These two species were most closely but distantly related to the marine hyphal/budding bacteria Hyphomonas jannaschiana and Hirschia baltica, which formed a deep phylogenetic line with Rhodobacter sphaeroides and Rhodobacter capsulatus. Caulobacter leidyia is unrelated to the other species of Caulobacter and belongs to the alpha-4 subclass of the Proteobacteria, forming a distinct cluster with Asticcacaulis excentricus and Asticcacaulis biprosthecium. The taxonomic implications of the polyphyletic nature of the genus Caulobacter and the absence of a type culture for the type species of the genus Caulobacter vibrioides, are discussed.

Phylogenetic relationships and uncertain taxonomy of Pedomicrobium species

The phylogenetic relationships among the species of the genus Pedomicrobium were studied by comparing their 16S rRNA sequences. The Pedomicrobium species form a coherent phylogenetic cluster within the genera of the hyphal budding bacteria in the alpha-Proteobacteria. The sequences of two strains of Pedomicrobium australicum were obtained from DNAs extracted from nonviable freeze-dried cells, which are the only source of material available, and were found to be almost identical (level of similarity, 99.9%). Overall, the Pedomicrobium species are closely related, with sequence similarities ranging from 96.2 to 99.9%. Pedomicrobium manganicum is phylogenetically the most distantly related species and exhibits the lowest similarity (96.2%) with Pedomicrobium americanum. Australian isolate Pedomicrobium sp. strain ACM 3067, P. americanum, and P. australicum are all very highly related, with similarities greater than 99%. Pedomicrobium sp. strain ACM 3067 is most closely related to P. australicum (level of similarity, 99.6%) and P. americanum (99.4%). These manganese-oxidizing species are more closely related to the iron-oxidizing species Pedomicrobium ferrugineum than to the other manganese-oxidizing species, P. manganicum. Taxonomic uncertainties resulting from the loss of the type culture of P. australicum are discussed.
