Abstract
Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are classically divided into BCR RhoGEF and GTPase activating protein (BCR)-ABL proto‑oncogene 1 non‑receptor tyrosine kinase (ABL) positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and BCR‑ABL negative MPNs, including essential thrombocythemia (ET). One of the major diagnostic criteria for ET is the absence of the philadelphia chromosome, thus when present it is almost indicative of CML. ET and CML are considered to be mutually exclusive; however, there are rare situations in which patients with ET present positive BCR‑ABL without the features of CML. Although from the literature review, the frequency of JAK2V617F mutation and BCR‑ABL translocation coexistence in MPNs is low, it may be higher than expected. The current study reported cases of two patients with an initial diagnosis of ET in the presence of JAK2V617F mutation and BCR‑ABL translocation by fluorescent in situ hybridization. Both patients presented with a heterozygous BCR‑ABL translocation, and absence of p190 and p210 transcripts, seemingly a der(9) in the background of an ET JAK2V617F mutation.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Thrombocytopenia, not associated with bone marrow primary disease, is a common clinical problem. The possibility of drug-induced thrombocytopenia must be considered, especially in hospitalized patients. Drugs can cause thrombocytopenia by several mechanisms including direct bone marrow or other organ toxicity, and immune reactions. CASE DESCRIPTION We describe a patient presenting with thrombocytopenia likely related to bisoprolol. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION We report a case of bisoprolol-induced thrombocytopenia which resolved with drug discontinuation and steroid therapy. We review the mechanisms involved in drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia.

Abstract
ECT is the most powerful therapeutic tool in the treatment of acute mood episodes. However, data on the efficacy and safety of ECT in the long term management of affective disorders is lacking, despite overwhelming rates of chronicity and/or frequent relapses among patients with unipolar and bipolar depression. In this presentation we will review the data of the ECT unit of Hospital de Santa Maria, Lisboa, on maintenace ECT (m-ECT) in these patients. We compare intra and inter-individual evolution prior and after the institution of m-ECT. Considering the number of hospital admissions, mood symptoms and other parameters, our data support the use of this technique as a prophylatic approach for patients with mood disorders and a previous good response to ECT in the acute phase of disease.

Abstract
We present rigorous upper and lower bounds for the zero-momentum gluon propagator D(0) of Yang-Mills theories in terms of the average value of the gluon field. This allows us to perform a controlled extrapolation of lattice data to infinite volume, showing that the infrared limit of the Landau-gauge gluon propagator in SU(2) gauge theory is finite and nonzero in three and in four space-time dimensions. In the two-dimensional case, we find D(0)=0, in agreement with Maas. We suggest an explanation for these results. We note that our discussion is general, although we apply our analysis only to pure gauge theory in the Landau gauge. Simulations have been performed on the IBM supercomputer at the University of São Paulo.

Abstract
Chronic exposure to testosterone (T) increases growth hormone (GH) secretion. To determine whether acute exposure to T would also enhance GH secretion, we infused saline, followed 1 wk later by T, for 18-24 h at one-third the adult male production rate in 12 pubertal boys and at the adult male production rate in eight additional pubertal boys. Blood was obtained every 20 min for GH and every 30 min for T from 2000-0800 h. Though infusion significantly increased serum T concentrations in all 20 boys, mean GH concentration, GH pulse frequency, and GH pulse amplitude did not increase compared to the saline infusion night. The secretory dynamics of GH as a function of 3-h time blocks from 2000-0800 h were also determined in the eight boys who received the higher dose of T. The profile for mean GH concentration, pulse frequency, pulse amplitude, and peak area were not affected by acute infusion of T at concentrations sufficient to alter LH secretion. This suggests that, at least in pubertal boys, one must be exposed to T for a period longer than 12-18 h to induce increased GH secretion.

Abstract
The hospital records of 118 2-month-old to 3-year-old children who had been treated for bacterial meningitis were reviewed. Within 2 weeks after hospitalization, one fourth of the patients sought medical attention for an acute illness, but only one was treated for the possible relapse or recurrence of meningitis. Because only five of the 113 patients with available follow-up information required a diagnostic lumbar puncture procedure, it is not recommended that a lumbar puncture be performed following treatment of bacterial meningitis to provide end-of-treatment baseline information.
