Susceptibility of hamsters to caecal amoebiasis by oral infection

A method is described for successfully establishing caecal amoebiasis in hamsters which were not fed and which were pretreated with 1 ml of magnesium sulphate every 24 hours for three days and then given 12 x 10(5) trophozoites of the HM-1 axenic strain or 18 x 10(5) trophozoites of the HK-9 axenic strain of Entamoeba histolytica by the oral route. All the animals developed diarrhoea within 24 hours of infection. When the animals were killed on the fifth day after infection the caecum was swollen and fused. Large macroscopic ulcers full of pus could be seen in the caecum. None of the control animals showed any of the changes mentioned above.

A metronidazole-resistant strain of Trichomonas vaginalis and its sensitivity to Go 10213

In the present study the comparative in-vitro and in-vivo efficacy of Go 10213 was compared with those of metronidazole, secnidazole, tinidazole, ornidazole and nimorazole against a metronidazole-resistant strain of T. vaginalis. Go 10213 was found to be superior in activity. It appears more promising than the drugs mentioned above on the basis of the evidence presented.

Comparative studies on the amoebicidal activity of known 5-nitroimidazole derivatives and CG 10213-Go in golden hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus, infected in the liver or caecum or both with trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica

CG 10213-Go, a 5-nitroimidazole derivative synthesized at the CIBA-Geigy Research Centre, Bombay, proved superior to such currently used 5-nitroimidazole derivatives as metronidazole, ornidazole, secnidazole, tinidazole and nimorazole, against experimental amoebic infections of the liver and caecum in a golden hamster model. CG 10213-Go is now undergoing clinical trials.

The infectivity of ingested adult hookworms

Fourth-stage larvae and adults of Ancylostoma ceylanicum (dog strain) produced patent infections, with fertile ova, in hamsters to which they had been given in a drench. Similarly, 36-day-old (immature adult) Necator americanus given in a drench to hamsters also produced patent infections with fertile ova. The epidemiological significance of these experiments is discussed.

Efficacy of seven anthelmintics against Ancylostoma ceylanicum in the golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus

In an experimental patent infection of Ancylostoma ceylanicum in golden hamsters the efficacy of seven anthelmintics was tested; bephenium hydroxynaphthoate, tetramisole, tetrachlorethylene, phenylene 1,4-diisothiocyanate, thiabendazole, parbendazole and mebendazole were studied. Mebendazole was the most effective, with parbendazole, phenylene 1,4-diisothiocyanate, thiabendazole and bephenium hydroxynaphthoate also satisfactory. Tetrachlorethylene and tetramisole were the least effective in our screen.

Development of Ancylostoma ceylanicum Looss, 1911 (hamster strain) in the albino mouse, Mus musculus, with and without cortisone

Complete development of Ancylostoma ceylanicum (Hamster strain) is reported for the first time in mice. A patent infection (viz. ova in faeces) could be established only under the influence of hydrocortisone acetate. Cultures made from the faeces containing eggs produced viable larvae which were infective to mice.

Migration and growth of Ancylostoma ceylanicum in golden hamsters Mesocricetus auratus

The route of migration and development of Ancylostoma ceylanicum, when given orally, has been described for the first time in hamsters. A predominant feature of the migration is the absence of any lung journey. This is unlike A. caninum, A. duodenale and A, brazilicnse when larvae are similarly given to an abnormal host.
