Squaramide-based receptors in anion supramolecular chemistry: insights into anion binding, sensing, transport and extraction

Over the last 15 years, squaramide-based receptors have attracted the attention of supramolecular chemists working in the field of anion recognition. Herein, we highlight examples of squaramide-based receptors that are able to bind, sense, extract and transport anions.

Heteronuclear Gold(I)-Copper(I) Complexes with Thia- and Mixed Thia-Aza Macrocyclic Ligands: Synthesis, Structures and Optical Properties

The reactivity of the heterometallic polynuclear complexes [{Au(R)2 }2 Cu2 (MeCN)2 ]n (R=C6 F5 , C6 Cl5 ) with the thioether crowns 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane (L1, [12]aneS3 ), 1,4,8,11-tetrathiacyclododecane (L2, [14]aneS4 ), 1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22-octathiacyclotetracosane (L3, [24]aneS8 ), and the quinoline functionalized pendant arm derivatives of the 12-membered mixed-donor macrocycles 1-aza-,4,7,10-trithiacyclododecane ([12]aneNS3 ) and 1,7-diaza-4,10-dithiacyclododecane ([12]aneN2 S2 ), L4 and L5, respectively, was investigated in THF solution. While with L4 and L5 only ionic compounds of general formulation [Cu(L)][Au(R)2 ] were isolated and structurally characterized (none of them featuring Au⋅⋅⋅Cu interactions), with L1-L3, beside similar ionic compounds, some heteronuclear complexes of general formulation [{Au(R)2 }{Cu(L)}] and featuring Au⋅⋅⋅Cu interactions were also obtained. All of them display rather unusual non-classical C-H⋅⋅⋅Au hydrogen interactions. The complexes display in the solid state different optical properties related to their structures, which have been studied experimentally and theoretically via TD-DFT calculations. In particular, all compounds of the type [{Au(R)2 }{Cu(L)}] featuring Au⋅⋅⋅Cu metallophilic interactions display luminescence in the solid state both at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K. On the contrary, ionic compounds of general formulation [Cu(L)][Au(R)2 ], except [Cu(L4)][Au(C6 F5 )2 ], are not luminescent.

An Experimental and Theoretical Insight into I2 /Br2 Oxidation of Bis(pyridin-2-yl)Diselane and Ditellane

The reactivity between bis(pyridin-2-yl)diselane o Py2 Se2 and ditellane o Py2 Te2 (L1 and L2, respectively; o Py=pyridyn-2-yl) and I2 /Br2 is discussed. Single-crystal structure analysis revealed that the reaction of L1 with I2 yielded [(HL1+ )(I- )⋅5/2I2 ]∞ (1) in which monoprotonated cations HL1+ template a self-assembled infinite pseudo-cubic polyiodide 3D-network, while the reaction with Br2 yielded the dibromide Ho PySeII Br2 (2). The oxidation of L2 with I2 and Br2 yielded the compounds Ho PyTeII I2 (3) and Ho PyTeIV Br4 (6), respectively, whose structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis. FT-Raman spectroscopy measurements are consistent with a 3c-4e description of all the X-Ch-X three-body systems (Ch=Se, Te; X=Br, I) in compounds 2, 3, Ho PyTeII Br2 (5), and 6. The structural and spectroscopic observations are supported by extensive theoretical calculations carried out at the DFT level that were employed to study the electronic structure of the investigated compounds, the thermodynamic aspects of their formation, and the role of noncovalent σ-hole halogen and chalcogen bonds in the X⋅⋅⋅X, X⋅⋅⋅Ch and Ch⋅⋅⋅Ch interactions evidenced structurally.

Potentiometric Sensing of Nonsteroidal Painkillers by Acyclic Squaramide Ionophores

We report here a small library of a new type of acyclic squaramide receptors (L1-L5) as selective ionophores for the detection of ketoprofen and naproxen anions (KF- and NS-, respectively) in aqueous media. 1H NMR binding studies show a high affinity of these squaramide receptors toward KF- and NS-, suggesting the formation of H-bonds between the two guests and the receptors through indole and -NH groups. Compounds L1-L5 have been tested as ionophores for the detection of KF- and NS- inside solvent PVC-based polymeric membranes. The optimal membrane compositions were established through the careful variation of the ligand/tridodecylmethylammonium chloride (TDMACl) anion-exchanger ratio. All of the tested acyclic squaramide receptors L1-L5 have high affinity toward KF- and NS- and anti-Hofmeister selectivity, with L4 and L5 showing the highest sensitivity and selectivity to NS-. The utility of the developed sensors for a high precision detection of KF- in pharmaceutical compositions with low relative errors of analysis (RSD, 0.99-1.4%) and recoveries, R%, in the range 95.1-111.8% has been demonstrated. Additionally, the chemometric approach has been involved to effectively discriminate between the structurally very similar KF- and NS-, and the possibility of detecting these analytes at concentrations as low as 0.07 μM with R2 of 0.947 and at 0.15 μM with R2 of 0.919 for NS- and KF-, respectively, was shown.

Ammonium N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)oxamate (AmPicOxam): A Novel Precursor of Calcium Oxalate Coating for Carbonate Stone Substrates

Ammonium N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)oxamate (AmPicOxam), synthesized from O-methyl-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)oxamate, was spectroscopically and structurally characterized and assayed as a novel precursor for the protection and consolidation of carbonate stone substrates. An in-depth characterization of treated and untreated biomicritic limestone and white Carrara marble samples was carried out by means of SEM microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, helium pycnometry, determination of water transport properties, and pull-off tests. The improved solubility (1.00 M, 16.5% w/w) of the title compound with respect to ammonium oxalate (0.4 M, 5% w/w) results in the formation of a thicker protective coating of calcium oxalate (CaOx) dihydrate (weddellite) on marble and biomicrite samples after the treatment with 5% and 12% w/w water solutions, producing a reduction in the stone porosity and increased cohesion. Theoretical calculations were carried out at the DFT level to investigate both the electronic structure of the N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)oxamate anion and the hydrolysis reaction leading from AmPicOxam to CaOx.

A new class of third-order nonlinear optical materials: laser pulse-duration dependant saturable absorption and nonlinear refraction in platinum(II) diimine-dithiolate complexes

The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of platinum diimine-dithiolate complexes [Pt(N^N)(S^S)] were investigated by means of Z-scan measurements, revealing second hyperpolarizability values up to 10^-29 esu, saturable absorption properties, and nonlinear refractive behaviour, which were rationalized also by means of DFT calculations.

A Structural Approach to the Strength Evaluation of Linear Chalcogen Bonds

The experimental structural features of chalcogen bonding (ChB) interactions in over 34,000 linear fragments R–Ch⋯A (Ch = S, Se, Te; R = C, N, O, S, Se, Te; A = N, O, S, Se, Te, F, Cl, Br, I) were analyzed. The bond distances dR–Ch and the interaction distances dCh⋯A were investigated, and the functions δR–Ch and δCh⋯A were introduced to compare the structural data of R–Ch⋯A fragments involving different Ch atoms. The functions δR−Ch and δCh⋯A were calculated by normalizing the differences between the relevant bond dR–Ch and ChB interaction dCh⋯A distances with respect to the sum of the relevant covalent (rcovR + rcovCh) and the van der Waals (vdW) radii (rvdWCh + rvdWA), respectively. A systematic comparison is presented, highlighting the role of the chalcogen involved, the role of the R atoms covalently bonded to the Ch, and the role of the A species playing the role of chalcogen bond acceptor. Based on the results obtained, an innovative approach is proposed for the evaluation and categorization of the ChB strength based on structural data.

Fluorescent sensing of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs naproxen and ketoprofen by dansylated squaramide-based receptors

Bis-squaramide receptors L1-L4 bearing a dansyl moiety were synthesised and their potential applications as fluorescent probes towards non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs naproxen and ketoprofen was investigated. A detailed photophysical characterization in CH₃CN/DMSO solution (9 : 1 v/v) was conducted and demonstrated that the two macrocyclic receptors L1 and L2 show good sensitivity towards ketoprofen with an ON-OFF fluorescent response, while the two open chain receptors L3 and L4 behave similarly with the three guests considered. DFT theoretical calculations carried out on L2 and L4 as model receptors allowed to propose a possible coordination mode towards the guests. Finally, ¹H-NMR spectroscopy in DMSO-d₆/0.5% water solution demonstrated that the four receptors interact with the considered guests via H-bonds.

[AuIII(N^N)Br2](PF6): A Class of Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Complexes (N^N = 2,2'-Bipyridine and 1,10-Phenanthroline Derivatives)

A series of new complexes of general formula [Au^III(N^N)Br₂](PF₆) (N^N = 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives) were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic, electrochemical, and diffractometric techniques and tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus intermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli), showing promising antibacterial and antibiofilm properties.

Chelating Phosphorus-An O, C, O-Coordinating Pincer-Type Ligand Coordinating PIII and PV Centres

The sequence of reactions of the phosphorus-containing aryllithium compound 5-t-Bu-1,3-[(P(O)(O-i-Pr)₂ ]₂ C₆ H₂ Li (ArLi) with Ph₂ PCl, KMnO₄ , elemental sulfur and elemental selenium, respectively, gave the aryldiphenylphosphane chalcogenides 5-t-Bu-1,3-[(P(O)(O-i-Pr)₂ ]₂ C₆ H₂ P(E)Ph₂ (1, E=O; 2, E=S; 3, E=Se). Compound 1 partially hydrolysed giving [5-t-Bu-1-{(P(O)(O-i-Pr)₂ }-3-{(P(O)(OH)₂ }C₆ H₂ ]P(O)Ph₂ (4). The reaction of ArLi with PhPCl₂ provided the benzoxaphosphaphosphole [1(P), 3(P)-P(O)(O-i-Pr)OPPh-6-t-Bu-4-P(O)(O-i-Pr)₂ ]C₆ H₂ P (5i) as a mixture of the two diastereomers. The oxidation of 5i with elemental sulfur gave the benzoxaphosphaphosphole sulfide [1(P), 3(P)-P(O)(O-i-Pr)OP(S)Ph-6-t-Bu-4-P(O)(O-i-Pr)₂ ]C₆ H₂ (5) as pair of enantiomers P1(R), P3(S)/P1(S), P3(R) of the diastereomer (RS/SR)-5 (5b). The aryldiphenylphosphane 5-t-Bu-1,3-[(P(O)(O-i-Pr)₂ ]₂ C₆ H₂ PPh₂ (6) was obtained from the reaction of the corresponding aryldiphenylphosphane sulfide 2 with either sodium hydride, NaH, or disodium iron tetracarbonyl, Na₂ Fe(CO)₄ . The oxidation of the aryldiphenylphosphane 6 with elemental iodine and subsequent hydrolysis yielded the aryldiphenyldioxaphosphorane 9-t-Bu-2,6-(OH)-4,4-Ph₂ -3,5-O₂ -2,6-P₂ -4λ⁵ -P-[5.3.1.0]-undeca-1(10),7(11),8-triene (7). Both of its diastereomers, (RR/SS)-7 (7a) and (RS/SR)-7 (7b), were separated as their chloroform and i-propanol solvates, 7a⋅2CHCl₃ and 7b⋅i-PrOH, respectively. DFT calculations accompanied the experimental work.

Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Architectures Driven by σ-Hole Interactions: A Halogen-Bonded 2D Network Based on a Diiminedibromido Gold(III) Complex and Tribromide Building Blocks

The reaction of the complex [Au(phen)Br₂](PF₆) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) with molecular dibromine afforded {[Au(phen)Br₂](Br₃)}_∞ (1). Single crystal diffraction analysis showed that the [Au(phen)Br₂]⁺ complex cations were bridged by asymmetric tribromide anions to form infinite zig-zag chains featuring the motif ···Au–Br···Br–Br–Br···Au–Br···Br–Br–Br···. The complex cation played an unprecedented halogen bonding (XB) donor role engaging type-I and type-II XB noncovalent interactions of comparable strength with symmetry related [Br₃]⁻ anions. A network of hydrogen bonds connects parallel chains in an infinite 2D network, contributing to the layered supramolecular architecture. DFT calculations allowed clarification of the nature of the XB interactions, showing the interplay between orbital mixing, analyzed at the NBO level, and electrostatic contribution, explored based on the molecular potential energy (MEP) maps of the interacting synthons.

Grafting of the 2,8-dithia-5-aza-2,6-pyridinophane macrocycle on SBA-15 mesoporous silica for the removal of Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions: synthesis, adsorption, and complex stability studies

Silica-based mesoporous materials have received growing attention in metal recovery from industrial processes, although, in general, the adsorption of metal ions by silanols is rather poor. Nevertheless, a great improvement of metal ion removal from aqueous solutions can be achieved by grafting metal-chelators on the particles' surface. Combining the metal-chelating properties of organic ligands with the high surface area of mesoporous silica particles makes these hybrid nanostructured materials a new horizon in metal recovery, sensing and controlled storage of metal ions in industrial and mining processes. Here, the 2,8-dithia-5-aza-2,6-pyridinophane (L) macrocycle was grafted on SBA-15 mesoporous silica to obtain the SBA-L mesoporous adsorbent for the removal and controlled recovery of Cd²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions from aqueous solution in a broad pH range (4-11). By grafting about 0.3 mmol g^-1 of L on SBA-15 a maximum loading capacity of 20.9 mg g^-1 and 31.8 mg g^-1 was obtained for Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺, respectively. The adsorption kinetics can be described with the pseudo-second order model, while the adsorption isotherm (298 K) followed the Langmuir model. The latter, together with potentiometric studies, suggests that the adsorption mechanism is based on metal chelation by the grafted macrocycle. In summary, SBA-L is an effective copper(II) and cadmium(II) chelator for possible applications where metal removal, storage and recovery are of basic importance.

Glyphosate sensing in aqueous solutions by fluorescent zinc(II) complexes of [9]aneN3-based receptors

Herein we describe the binding abilities of Zn(II) complexes of [12]aneN4- (L1) and [9]aneN3-based receptors (L2, L3) towards the herbicides N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine (glyphosate, H3PMG) and 2-amino-4-[hydroxy(methyl)phosphoryl]butanoic acid (glufosinate, H2GLU), and also aminomethylphosphonic acid (H2AMPA), the main metabolite of H3PMG, and phosphate. All ligands form stable Zn(II) complexes, whose coordination geometries allow a possible interaction of the metal center with exogenous anionic substrates. Potentiometric studies evidenced the marked coordination ability of the L2/Zn(II) system for the analytes considered, with a preferential binding affinity for H3PMG over the other substrates, in a wide range of pH values. 1H and 31P NMR experiments supported the effective coordination of such substrates by the Zn(II) complex of L2, while fluorescence titrations and a test strip experiment were performed to evaluate whether the H3PMG recognition processes could be detected by fluorescence signaling.

Coordination chemistry of nitrile-functionalized mixed thia-aza macrocycles [9]aneN2S and [9]aneNS2 towards silver(I)

The aim of this study is to determine how far the length and number of the pendant arms in nitrile-functionalized derivatives of small mixed-donor macrocycles influence the structure of silver(I) com­plexes, both in the presence and absence of exogenous ligands.

The coordination chemistry towards silver(I) of the small-ring macrocycles [9]aneN₂S (1-thia-4,7-di­aza­cyclo­nona­ne) and [9]aneNS₂ (1,4-di­thia-7-aza­cyclo­nona­ne) incorporating nitrile-functionalized pendant arms is considered both in the presence and the absence of exogenous bridging ligands. The aim is to understand the influence of the number and length of the pendant arms on the nuclearity and dimensionality of the resulting com­plexes. The X-ray crystal structures of the com­plexes bis­[4,7-bis­(cyano­meth­yl)-1-thia-4,7-di­aza­cyclo­non­ane-κ³N,N′,S]silver(I) tetra­fluorido­borate, [Ag(C₁₀H₁₆N₄S)₂]BF₄ or [Ag(L¹)₂]BF₄, [4,7-bis­(2-cyano­eth­yl)-1-thia-4,7-di­aza­cyclo­nonane-κ³N,N′,S](thio­cyanato-κS)silver(I), [Ag(C₁₂H₂₀N₄S)(NCS)] or [Ag(L²)(SCN)], and μ-thio­cyanato-κ²S:S-bis­{[7-(2-cyano­eth­yl)-1,4-di­thia-7-aza­cyclo­nonane-κ³N,S,S′]silver(I)} tetra­fluor­ido­borate, [Ag₂(C₉H₁₆N₂S₂)₂(SCN)]BF₄ or [Ag₂(L³)₂(μ-SCN)]BF₄, are discus­sed in relation to analogous com­pounds in the literature.

An unprecedented non-classical poly-interhalogen anion made of [I2Cl] and I2 at the 2-(p-tolyl)selenopheno[2,3-b]pyridinium cation template

Platinum diimine-dithiolate complexes as a new class of photoconducting compounds for pristine photodetectors: case study on [Pt(bipy)(Naph-edt)] (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; Naph-edt2- = 2-naphthylethylene-1,2-dithiolate)

The photoconducting properties of platinum diimine-dithiolate complex [Pt(bipy)(Naph-edt)] (1; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; Naph-edt2- = 2-naphthylethylene-1,2-dithiolate) were investigated. DFT calculations on a model assembly with four complex units suggest that the high external quantum efficency measured on a prototype photodetector correlates with the intermolecular character of electronic excitations in the visible region.

Morpholine- and Thiomorpholine-Based Amidodithiophosphonato Nickel Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, P-N Cleavage, Antibacterial Activity and Silica Nano-Dispersion

The reactivity of thiomorpholinium P-(4-methoxyphenyl)-N-thiomorpholin-amidodithiophosphonate (S-MorH⁺₂)(S-Mor-adtp^-) and morpholinium P-(4-methoxyphenyl)-N-morpholin-amidodithiophosphonate (O-MorH⁺₂)(O-Mor-adtp^-) towards nickel (II) dichloride hexahydrated is presented and the hydrolysis of the relevant metal complexes investigated. The hydrolytic products (S-MorH⁺₂)₂ [Ni(dtp)₂]²- and (O-MorH⁺₂)₂[Ni(dtp)₂]²- were characterized by means of FT-IR, ¹H, and ³¹P NMR and XRD and the experimented P-N cleavage investigated and elucidated by means of DFT calculations. The antimicrobial activity of the neutral nickel complex [Ni(S-Mor-adtp)₂] was tested against a set of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria alongside with its nanodispersion in a silica matrix. The complex [Ni(S-Mor-adtp)₂] did not show antibacterial activity, whilst the nano-dispersed sample [Ni(S-Mor-adtp)₂]_SiO₂ demonstrated inhibition to growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The nanocomposites were fully characterized by means of XRPD, TGA, SEM and dinitrogen sorption techniques.

Bioimaging Applications of Non-Lamellar Liquid Crystalline Nanoparticles

Self-assembling processes of amphiphilic lipids in water give rise to complex architectures known as lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) phases. Particularly, bicontinuous cubic and hexagonal LLC phases can be dispersed in water forming colloidal nanoparticles respectively known as cubosomes and hexosomes. These non-lamellar LLC dispersions are of particular interest for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications as they are potentially non-toxic, chemically stable, and biocompatible, also allowing encapsulation of large amounts of drugs. Furthermore, conjugation of specific moieties enables their targeting, increasing therapeutic efficacies and reducing side effects by avoiding exposure of healthy tissues. In addition, as they can be easy loaded or functionalized with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic imaging probes, cubosomes and hexosomes can be used for the engineering of multifunctional/theranostic nanoplatforms. This review outlines recent advances in the applications of cubosomes and hexosomes for in vitro and in vivo bioimaging.

Switching-On Fluorescence by Copper (II) and Basic Anions: A Case Study with a Pyrene-Functionalized Squaramide

The new symmetric acyclic N,N’-bis(1-pyrenyl) squaramide (H₂L) functionalized with the pyrene moiety as a fluorogenic fragment has been designed and its ability to selectively detect specific anions and metals investigated. H₂L selectively binds Cl⁻ both in solution (DMSO 0.5% H₂O and MeCN) and in the solid state, and allows to selectively detect Cu²⁺ in MeCN with the formation of a 2:1 metal-receptor complex, with a green intense emission appreciable by naked eye under the UV lamp. The H₂L copper complex preserves its emission properties in the presence of Cl⁻. The addition of basic anions (OH⁻, CN⁻, and F⁻) up to 10 equivalents caused the deprotonation of the squaramide NHs and a dramatic change of the emission properties of the H₂L copper complex.

Can Serendipity Still Hold Any Surprises in the Coordination Chemistry of Mixed-Donor Macrocyclic Ligands? The Case Study of Pyridine-Containing 12-Membered Macrocycles and Platinum Group Metal Ions PdII, PtII, and RhIII

This study investigates the coordination chemistry of the tetradentate pyridine-containing 12-membered macrocycles L1-L3 towards Platinum Group metal ions PdII, PtII, and RhIII. The reactions between the chloride salts of these metal ions and the three ligands in MeCN/H2O or MeOH/H2O (1:1 v/v) are shown, and the isolated solid compounds are characterized, where possible, by mass spectroscopy and 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopic measurements. Structural characterization of the 1:1 metal-to-ligand complexes [Pd(L1)Cl]2[Pd2Cl6], [Pt(L1)Cl](BF4), [Rh(L1)Cl2](PF6), and [Rh(L3)Cl2](BF4)·MeCN shows the coordinated macrocyclic ligands adopting a folded conformation, and occupying four coordination sites of a distorted square-based pyramidal and octahedral coordination environment for the PdII/PtII, and RhIII complexes, respectively. The remaining coordination site(s) are occupied by chlorido ligands. The reaction of L3 with PtCl2 in MeCN/H2O gave by serendipity the complex [Pt(L3)(m-1,3-MeCONH)PtCl(MeCN)](BF4)2·H2O, in which two metal centers are bridged by an amidate ligand at a Pt1-Pt2 distance of 2.5798(3) Å and feature one square-planar and one octahedral coordination environment. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, which utilize the broken symmetry approach (DFT-BS), indicate a singlet d8-d8 PtII-PtII ground-state nature for this compound, rather than the alleged d9-d7 PtI-PtIII mixed-valence character reported for related dinuclear Pt-complexes.

Stabilization of caesium ions by simple organic molecules: crystal structures of Cs(OXL) (OXL = oxalurate anion) and the CsOH/cyanuric acid co-crystal Cs3(CYH3)4(OH)3 (CYH3 = cyanuric acid)

The reported X-ray crystal structures show that both the organic moieties form robust homomeric ribbons based on strong and articulated N–H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Silicon-based fluorescent platforms for copper(ii) detection in water

The potential of silicon-based fluorescent platforms for the detection of trace toxic metal ions was investigated in an aqueous environment. To this aim, silicon chips were first functionalized with amino groups, and fluorescein organic dyes, used as sensing molecules, were then covalently linked to the surface via formation of thiourea groups. The obtained hybrid heterostructures exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards copper(ii), a limit of detection compatible with the recommended upper limits for copper in drinking water, and good reversibility using a standard metal–chelating agent. The fluorophore–analyte interaction mechanism at the basis of the reported fluorescence quenching, as well as the potential of performance improvement, were also studied. The herein presented sensing architecture allows, in principle, tailoring of the selectivity towards other metal ions by proper fluorophore selection, and provides a favorable outlook for integration of fluorescent chemosensors with silicon photonics technology.

Covalent linkage of fluorescein to silanized silicon chips yields solid-state platforms for detection of copper(ii) in water. This architecture represents a step forward towards the fabrication of sensors for remote water analysis applications.

Luminescent gold-thallium derivatives with a pyridine-containing 12-membered aza-thioether macrocycle

The coordination modes of the ligand 2,5,8-trithia[9](2,6)pyridinophane (L) to thallium(i), gold(iii) and gold(i) have been studied. Thallium(i) is coordinated by the macrocyclic ligand in [Tl(L)](PF6) (1) through all the sulfur and nitrogen atoms, in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry with the thallium(i) ion in the apical position and with the presence of an inert lone pair. Gold(iii) is bonded by the ligand only through the nitrogen of the pyridine group in [AuCl3(L)] (2), whereas two AuI-C6F5 fragments coordinate the sulfur atoms next to the pyridine moiety of the ligand in [{Au(C6F5)}2(μ-L)] (3), which form a linear polymer through intermolecular aurophilic contacts. The heterometallic TlI/AuI complex {[Au(C6F5)2Tl]2(L)}n (4) features a polymeric structural nature with a metallic pseudo-rhombic Au2Tl2 core, which repeats itself forming a zig-zag polymer. In each Au2Tl2 unit only one thallium atom is bonded by the NS3 donor set of the macrocyclic ligand and also forms two unsupported Au-Tl bonds with two [Au(C6F5)2]- units in an overall pseudo-octahedral geometry. The other thallium atom similarly bridges the same [Au(C6F5)2]- units and links a neighbouring Au2Tl2 moiety, thus exhibiting a distorted trigonal planar geometry being bonded only to three gold atoms with unsupported Au-Tl interactions. This complex displays an interesting thermochromic behaviour showing emissions mainly resulting from MM'CT transitions at room temperature. At 77 K a dual emission appears, probably arising from the two different thallium environments. DFT calculations have been carried out in the attempt to investigate the origin of the emissions of complex 4.

Ammonium monoethyloxalate (AmEtOx): a new agent for the conservation of carbonate stone substrates

Diradical Character of Neutral Heteroleptic Bis(1,2-dithiolene) Metal Complexes: Case Study of [Pd(Me2timdt)(mnt)] (Me2timdt = 1,3-Dimethyl-2,4,5-trithioxoimidazolidine; mnt2- = 1,2-Dicyano-1,2-ethylenedithiolate)

The reaction of the bis(1,2-dithiolene) complex [Pd(Me₂timdt)₂] (1; Me₂timdt^•– = monoreduced 1,3-dimethyl-2,4,5-trithioxoimidazolidine) with Br₂ yielded the complex [Pd(Me₂timdt)Br₂] (2), which was reacted with Na₂mnt (mnt^2– = 1,2-dicyano-1,2-ethylenedithiolate) to give the neutral mixed-ligand complex [Pd(Me₂timdt)(mnt)] (3). Complex 3 shows an intense solvatochromic near-infrared (NIR) absorption band falling between 955 nm in DMF and 1060 nm in CHCl₃ (ε = 10700 M^–1 cm^–1 in CHCl₃). DFT calculations were used to elucidate the electronic structure of complex 3 and to compare it with those of the corresponding homoleptic complexes 1 and [Pd(mnt)₂] (4). An in-depth comparison of calculated and experimental structural and vis–NIR spectroscopic properties, supported by IEF-PCM TD-DFT and NBO calculations, clearly points to a description of 3 as a dithione-dithiolato complex. For the first time, a broken-symmetry (BS) procedure for the evaluation of the singlet diradical character (DC) of heteroleptic bis(1,2-dithiolene) complexes has been developed and applied to complex 3. The DC, predominant for 1 (n_DC = 55.4%), provides a remarkable contribution to the electronic structures of the ground states of both 3 and 4, showing a diradicaloid nature (n_DC = 24.9% and 27.5%, respectively). The computational approach developed here clearly shows that a rational design of the DC of bis(1,2-ditiolene) metal complexes, and hence their linear and nonlinear optical properties, can be achieved by a proper choice of the 1,2-dithiolene ligands based on their electronic structure.

Aza- and Mixed Thia/Aza-Macrocyclic Receptors with Quinoline-Bearing Pendant Arms for Optical Discrimination of Zinc(II) or Cadmium(II) Ions

The synthesis and coordination properties of two fluorescent chemosensors, featuring [9]aneN₃ (1,4,7-triazacyclononane; L1) and [12]aneNS₃ (1-aza-4,7,10-trithiacyclododecane; L2) as receptor units, and a quinoline pendant arm with an amide group as a functional group spacer are described. The optical responses of L1 and L2 in the presence of several metal ions were analysed in MeCN/H₂ O (1 : 4 v/v) solutions. A selective chelation enhancement of fluorescence (CHEF) effect was observed in the presence of Zn²⁺ in the case of L1, and in the presence of Cd²⁺ in the case of L2, following the formation of a 1 : 1 and a 1 : 2 metal/ligand complex, respectively, which was also confirmed by potentiometric measurements. ¹ H and ¹³ C NMR measurements in CD₃ CN/CDCl₃ in combination with molecular mechanics calculations show that for both complexes of L1 and L2 with Zn²⁺ and Cd²⁺ , respectively, the coordination of the carbonyl group from the pendant arm could be the origin of the observed optical selectivity.

Bis-Selenoureas for Anion Binding: A 1H NMR and Theoretical Study

The anion binding ability of a family of bis-selenoureas L1-L3 obtained by the reaction of 1,3-bis(aminomethyl)-benzene and phenylisoselenocyanate, p-methoxyphenylisoselenocyanate and naphtylisoselenocyanate, for L1, L2, and L3, respectively, has been tested and compared to that of previously described bis-urea analogues. Results suggest that the introduction of selenium leads to an increase in the acidity of the urea NH hydrogen atoms, and therefore to a stronger affinity (more than three-fold higher) towards anion species, in particular dihydrogen phosphate, in DMSO-d₆ . Theoretical calculations allowed for the optimization of the adducts receptors corroborating the experimental results.

Halogenated isophthalamides and dipicolineamides: the role of the halogen substituents in the anion binding properties

A novel family of amide-based receptors is herein described. Specifically, the role of the halogen substituents at the aryl moieties in the anion binding properties of a series of halogenated isophthalamides and dipicolineamides (L1-L6) was investigated both in solution and in the solid state in order to evaluate the incidence of all possible different and combined weak host-guest interactions. Only L5 and L6 bearing pentafluorophenyl rings as substituents have some affinities for the set of anions studied. In particular, in the case of L5 an interesting behaviour with the formation of a non-symmetric adduct with benzoate and dihydrogen phosphate was hypothesised by ¹H- and ¹⁹F-NMR spectroscopy studies in solution and confirmed by theoretical calculation. The study of the crystal structures of the receptors demonstrated that the steric hindrance determined by the halogen substituents in the receptor molecules influences the accessibility of the anions to the isophthalamide or dipicoline amide NH moieties, thus modulating the affinity for the anion guests.

Antibacterial Activity of Amidodithiophosphonato Nickel(II) Complexes: An Experimental and Theoretical Approach

The reactions of 2,4-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dithio-2,4-diphosphetane-2,4-disulfide (Lawesson's Reagent, LR) with benzylamine (BzNH2) and 4-phenylbutylamine (PhBuNH2) yield benzylammonium P-(4-methoxyphenyl)-N-benzyl-amidodithiophosphonate (BzNH3)(BzNH-adtp) and 4-phenylbutylammonium P-(4-methoxyphenyl)-N-(4-phenylbutyl)-amidodithiophosphonate (PhBuNH3)(PhBuNH-adtp). The relevant nickel complexes [Ni(BzNH-adtp)2] and [Ni(PhBuNH-adtp)2] and the corresponding hydrolysed derivatives (BzNH3)2[Ni(dtp)2] and (PhBuNH3)2[Ni(dtp)2] were prepared and fully characterized. The antimicrobial activity of the aforementioned amidodithiophosphonates against a set of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogen bacteria was evaluated, and [Ni(BzNH-adtp)2] and [Ni(PhBuNH-adtp)2] showed antiproliferative activity towards Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus haemolyticus strains. density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to shed some light on the activity of reported compounds related to their tendency towards P-N bond cleavage.

Photoconducting Devices with Response in the Visible-Near-Infrared Region Based on Neutral Ni Complexes of Aryl-1,2-dithiolene Ligands

Metal bis(1,2-dithiolene) complexes belonging to the class [Ni(Ar-edt)₂]^x- [Ar-edt^2- = arylethylene-1,2-dithiolate; Ar = phenyl, (1^x-), 2-naphthyl (2^x-); x = 0 and 1] were fully characterized by NMR, UV-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR), diffuse reflectance, and FT-IR spectroscopy, as well as cyclic voltammetry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These complexes have emerged as new photoconducting materials that allowed for the development of a prototype of photodetectors with response in the vis-NIR region. The photodetecting devices showed in some cases quantum efficiencies orders of magnitude higher than those of previously reported 1,2-dithiolene systems.

Unequivocal Experimental Evidence of the Relationship between Emission Energies and Aurophilic Interactions

In this paper, we describe experimental evidence of a change in the emission energy as a function of the Au-Au distance. We have employed a luminescent complex exhibiting an aurophilic interaction, which is weak enough to allow its length to be modified by external pressure but rigid enough to confer structural stability on the complex. By determining the crystal structures and emission characteristics over a range of pressures, we have identified an exponential relationship between the energy of the emitted light and the metal-metal distances under pressure. This result can be indirectly related to the repulsive branch of the fitted function representing the energy of the system in the ground state at different Au-Au distances. The relativistic nature of gold appears to play an important role in the behavior of this complex.
