Abstract
The SARS-CoV-2 infection has become as a worldwide public health emergency. It exhibits a variety of clinical presentations, ranging from benign to acute respiratory distress syndrome, systemic involvement, and multiorganic failure. The severity of the clinical picture depends on host and virus biological features and the presence of comorbidities such as chronic kidney disease. In addition, the interaction between the virus, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, and the exacerbated immune response could lead to the development of acute kidney injury. However, the implications of SARS-CoV-2 infection on renal cells, the prognosis of patients with chronic kidney disease, and the long-term behavior of renal function are not entirely understood. This review aims to explore the role of SARS-CoV-2 in acute and chronic kidney disease and the possible pathogenic mechanisms of renal involvement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Analysis of the results on the treatment of esophageal cancer by transthoracic esophagectomy by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons and oncologists. METHODS Between January 1990 and December 2009, 100 consecutive patients underwent transthoracic esophagectomy. Data were collected prospectively and clinical, pathological and histological features of the tumors were analyzed as well as the results of postoperative morbidity and mortality. RESULTS The average patient age was 55 years (range 31- 83 years). In 59 cases the tumor was located in the lower third and in 41 cases in the middle third. Forty-six patients had adenocarcinoma and 54 squamous cell carcinoma. In 54 cases radio-chemotherapy was planned preoperatively. Classifi cation according to pathological tumor stage was: stage 0 in 21 patients, stage I in 10 patients, stage IIa in 28, stage IIb in 9, stage III in 21 and stage IV in 11. The mean number of lymph nodes examined was 14 (range 0-28). Hospital mortality occurred in 4 cases and postoperative complications in 29 patients (33%). The most frequent postoperative complication was pulmonary complications in 17 cases. The average hospital stay was 15.2 days (range 10-40 days) CONCLUSIONS The results of esophageal cancer have been improved in recent years due to the formation of multidisciplinary teams in this pathology. In our study we have shown that the results obtained with the transthoracic technique for cancer of the esophagus are within the ranges reported in the literature for teams with high prevalence of the disease.

Abstract
We report 4 cases of pseudomesotheliomatous carcinoma of the lung, which has clinical and microscopic features similar to malignant mesothelioma, but with ultrastructural, immunohistochemical, and molecular characteristics suggestive of a histogenesis from type II pneumocytes. Neoplasm grows as a diffuse or solid pattern of large polygonal cells with sharply defined borders. Hale's colloidal iron is positive in the cytoplasm of small groups of cells and, focally, in some intercellular spaces. Ultrastructure showed short microvilli in the surface. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for thyroid transcription factor-1, podoplanin, mesothelin, pan-cytokeratin, CK-7, CK-19, Ber-EP4, epithelial membrane antigen, apoprotein surfactant A, epidermal growth factor receptor, Leu-M1, carcinoembryonic antigen, E-cadherin, and CD-44 and negative for mesothelioma markers thrombomodulin and calretinin. In some areas, there were small cysts which contained a concentric fibrilar basophilic material apoprotein surfactant A positive. Chromosomal imbalances with comparative genomic hybridization technique were identified with a median of 15 abnormalities per case (range, 1-26): 51 gains, 6 losses, and 1 high-level amplification. The most frequent aberrations among the cases were gains on chromosomes regions 1q, 3q, 5p, 8q, 16p, and 18q and losses in 17p11-13 and 17q 22-q25. High-level amplifications were detected on 7p13-p21. In all cases, there was a characteristic association between the gains on 16p and those on 18q. The 4 cases resulted in death in less than 14 months, in spite of complete surgery and chemotherapy in 2 cases. Our aim is to complement the current understanding of this pseudomesotheliomatous "pneumocytic" carcinoma and alert pathologists to this rare entity to avoid misdiagnosis.

Abstract
This presentation describes our experience in combining speech recognition software, clinical review software, and other software products on a single computer. Different processor speeds, random access memory (RAM), and computer costs were evaluated. We found that combining continuous speech recognition software with Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) workstation software on the same platform is feasible and can lead to substantial savings of hardware cost. This combination optimizes use of limited workspace and can improve radiology workflow.

Abstract
The RID assay is one of the in vitro methods used for in-process control in the production of rabies vaccines for veterinary use. It has been shown to be very useful for determining antigen concentration in the final bulk product. The work presented in this paper, including the production and standardization of candidate standard reagents for use in the Radial Immunodiffusion Assay (RID) was carried out at the Pan American Institute for Food Protection and Zoonoses (INPPAZ/PAHO/WHO). The study was completed with the cooperation of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, National University of La Plata (NULP), Argentina, where the validation of the proposed standards and the quality control of samples from 28 different batches of rabies vaccines produced with Pasteur strain rabies virus (PV) in BHK cells were performed. The activity of the vaccines was determined by in vivo (NIH) and in vitro (RID)assays. The results of the candidate reagents for the reagent standardization tests showed stability, sensitivity and reproducibility. The Relative Potency the 1.2 between the problem vaccines and the reference vaccine was estimated by variance and regression analysis. The results of our validation study show that the INPPAZ (PAHO/WHO) is capable of producing and distributing the above-mentioned standard reagents, as well as of providing support for the incorporation of the RID technique (sensitive, rapid and inexpensive) to the laboratories that manufacture rabies vaccines in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To find out how much the temperature in the palm rises after upper thoracic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis, and correlate the temperature with the outcome. DESIGN Retrospective study. SETTING University hospital, Spain. SUBJECTS 73 patients (34 women and 39 men, age range 16-42 years, mean 26) who were operated for palmar hyperhidrosis between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 1997. INTERVENTIONS Bilateral thoracic endoscopic sympathectomy during which the temperature was monitored on the skin of both axillae and thenar eminences, and in the oesophagus. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Morbidity, alleviation of hyperhidrosis, recurrence rate, and differences in temperature postoperatively. RESULTS There was minor bleeding during operation in 25 cases (34%), but in only 4 was it sufficient to require insertion of a drain; 2 patients developed transient Homer's syndrome; but the most common complication was compensatory hyperhidrosis (n = 52, 71%). In only 5 was this other than mild and required treatment with aluminium chloride in ethanol 25%. Palmar hyperhidrosis was alleviated in all cases, axillary sweating was considerably improved, and there was improvement in the feet in 56 (77%). There were 5 recurrences, all on the right side, during a mean follow up of 9 months (range 2-36), but in no case was the sweating severe. In almost all cases the temperature of the palm was less than that of the axilla before operation by a mean (SD) of 0.9 (0.3) degrees C. The rise in temperature varied from 1.7 (0.4) degrees C to 2.6 (0.4) degrees C. In the 5 patients who developed recurrences the increase was less (0.5 (0.4) degrees C). CONCLUSION Thoracic endoscopic sympathectomy is safe, simple, and effective in treating palmar hyperhidrosis that has not responded to conservative treatment. Intradermal monitoring is an accurate and cost-effective way of monitoring temperature during operation. Although it is essential to achieve a rise in temperature of 1 degrees C, our most important finding was that the final temperature in both hands and axillae should be above 35 degrees C and as near as possible to 36 degrees C.

Abstract
A case is presented in which ultrasonographic examination led to the prenatal detection of a ring 13 chromosome in a fetus. At 18 weeks' gestation, the fetus presented with holoprosencephaly, an abnormal configuration of the lower extremities, and an atrial septal defect. Although the amount of amniotic fluid was normal, limb movements were never observed throughout pregnancy. The lower extremities were always flexed at the knee and talipes equinovarus was present. Hydrocephaly became apparent during the 2nd trimester. The ultrasonographic findings were confirmed by postpartum autopsy and X-ray examination. The ring chromosome was identified through amniocentesis and later verified in postpartum tissue.

Abstract
Numerous investigators have reported an increased incidence of pneumonia caused by Gram-negative bacilli and other secondary pathogens in transplant recipients infected by cytomegalovirus (CMV). To determine if CMV infections are related to colonization of the upper respiratory tract by Gram-negative bacilli, we examined prospectively 22 renal transplant recipients with sequential bacteriological, virological and biochemical examinations performed just prior to and at various times after transplantation. Only 11% of subjects had Gram-negative bacilli isolated from gargle specimens prior to transplantation, as compared to 54% after transplantation. More importantly, after transplantation, subjects with active CMV infections were more likely to have prolonged oropharyngeal carriage of Gram-negative bacilli than subjects without CMV infections (36% v. 25%). During active CMV infections, the rate at which Gram-negative bacilli were isolated from gargle specimens rose from 28 to 47%. During culture-positive CMV infections, the isolation rate reached 57% and was significantly different from that of CMV-negative samples (P less than 0.01). The increased rate of Gram-negative bacillary isolation from gargle specimens during CMV infections was not a function of type of immunosuppressive agents used, rejection episodes, antibiotic administration, concomitant hepatitis B, Epstein-Barr (EBV) virus, or herpes simplex virus infections, or alterations in salivary fibronectin concentrations.

Abstract
OCP crystals were hydrolyzed in solutions containing Ca2+, Mg2+, HPO4(2-), CO3(2-), F-, citrate or P2O7 ions. Products of hydrolysis were analyzed using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. Results demonstrated that the OCP to Apatite (AP) transformation is influenced by: (1) types of ions in solution: inhibited by Mg2+, citrate or P2O7(4-); facilitated by F-, CO3(2-), HPO4(2-) or Ca2+ ions; (2) ionic concentrations; (3) solution pH; (4) OCP crystal size. SEM showed needle-like micro-crystals on the surfaces and ends of OCP macrocrystals. TEM showed side-to-side and end-to-end arrangements and presence of central defects in the apatite crystals. IR spectra showed the incorporation of CO3, or HPO4, the HPO4 incorporation being least from F-containing solutions. These results suggest that OCP to AP transformation occurred by the process of dissolution of OCP and subsequent precipitation of Ca-deficient apatites, incorporating CO3(2-), HPO4(2-) or F- present in solution. These results indicate that the observed stability of OCP in pathological calcifications may be due to the presence of Mg2+, citrate and/or P2O7(4-) and/or low levels of CO3(2-), F-, Ca2+, HPO4(2-) ions in the biological fluids.

Abstract
The rate of degradation of radioactive labeled mitochondrial proteins synthesized both in vitro and in vivo by isolated yeast mitochondria and growing yeast cells respectively, has been studied. It was found that the in vitro-synthesized mitochondrial proteins are rapidly degraded by an energy-dependent proteolytic system. Under the same experimental conditions the in vivo-synthesized mitochondrial proteins are slowly degraded to a limited extent by a protease which is slightly inhibited by ATP. During this period, the mitochondria are coupled and metabolically active. It is proposed that mitochondria possess an energy-dependent proteolytic system that recognizes as substrates either "abnormal" proteins or unassembled protein subunits encoded in the mitochondrial genome. An apparently different system, which is independent of energy, seems to be responsible for the slow and limited degradation of "normal" mitochondrial proteins.
