Plasma electron acceleration driven by a long-wave-infrared laser

Laser-driven plasma accelerators provide tabletop sources of relativistic electron bunches and femtosecond x-ray pulses, but usually require petawatt-class solid-state-laser pulses of wavelength λL ~ 1 μm. Longer-λL lasers can potentially accelerate higher-quality bunches, since they require less power to drive larger wakes in less dense plasma. Here, we report on a self-injecting plasma accelerator driven by a long-wave-infrared laser: a chirped-pulse-amplified CO2 laser (λL ≈ 10 μm). Through optical scattering experiments, we observed wakes that 4-ps CO2 pulses with <  1/2 terawatt (TW) peak power drove in hydrogen plasma of electron density down to 4 × 1017 cm-3 (1/100 atmospheric density) via a self-modulation (SM) instability. Shorter, more powerful CO2 pulses drove wakes in plasma down to 3 × 1016 cm-3 that captured and accelerated plasma electrons to relativistic energy. Collimated quasi-monoenergetic features in the electron output marked the onset of a transition from SM to bubble-regime acceleration, portending future higher-quality accelerators driven by yet shorter, more powerful pulses.

Picosecond Spin Current Generation from Vicinal Metal-Antiferromagnetic Insulator Interfaces

We report the picosecond spin current generation from the interface between a heavy metal and a vicinal antiferromagnet insulator Cr_{2}O_{3} by laser pulses at room temperature and zero magnetic field. It is converted into a detectable terahertz emission in the heavy metal via the inverse spin Hall effect. The vicinal interfaces are apparently the source of the picosecond spin current, as evidenced by the proportional terahertz signals to the vicinal angle. We attribute the origin of the spin current to the transient magnetic moment generated by an interfacial nonlinear magnetic-dipole difference-frequency generation. We propose a model based on the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking to quantitatively explain the terahertz intensity with respect to the angles of the laser polarization and the film azimuth. Our work opens new opportunities in antiferromagnetic and ultrafast spintronics by considering symmetry breaking.

Linkage Engineering in Covalent Organic Frameworks for Metal-Free Electrocatalytic C2H4 Production from CO2

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce ethylene (C2H4) is conducive to sustainable development of energy and environment. At present, most electrocatalysts for C2H4 production are limited to the heavy metal copper, meanwhile, achieving metal-free catalysis remains a challenge. Noted piperazine with sp3 N hybridization is beneficial to CO2 capture, but CO2RR performance and mechanism have been lacking. Herein, based on linkage engineering, we construct a novel high-density sp3 N catalytic array via introducing piperazine into the crystalline and microporous aminal-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Thanks to its high sp3 N density, strong CO2 capture capacity and great hydrophilicity, aminal-linked COF successfully achieves the conversion of CO2 to C2H4 with a Faraday efficiency up to 19.1 %, which is stand out in all reported metal-free COF electrocatalysts. In addition, a series of imine-linked COFs are synthesized and combined with DFT calculations to demonstrate the critical role of sp3 N in enhancing the kinetics of CO2RR. Therefore, this work reveals the extraordinary potential of linkage engineering in COFs to break through some catalytic bottlenecks.

First Measurement of η Meson Production in Neutrino Interactions on Argon with MicroBooNE

We present a measurement of η production from neutrino interactions on argon with the MicroBooNE detector. The modeling of resonant neutrino interactions on argon is a critical aspect of the neutrino oscillation physics program being carried out by the DUNE and Short Baseline Neutrino programs. η production in neutrino interactions provides a powerful new probe of resonant interactions, complementary to pion channels, and is particularly suited to the study of higher-order resonances beyond the Δ(1232). We measure a flux-integrated cross section for neutrino-induced η production on argon of 3.22±0.84(stat)±0.86(syst) 10^{-41}  cm^{2}/nucleon. By demonstrating the successful reconstruction of the two photons resulting from η production, this analysis enables a novel calibration technique for electromagnetic showers in GeV accelerator neutrino experiments.

Sulfur-Defect-Induced TiS1.94 as a High-Capacity and Long-Life Anode Material for Zinc-Ion Batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are competitive among the elective candidates for electrochemical energy storage systems, but the intrinsic drawbacks of zinc metal anodes such as dendrites and corrosion severely hinder their large-scale application. Developing alternative anode materials capable of high reversibility and stability for storing Zn2+ ions is a feasible approach to circumvent the challenge. Herein, a sulfur-defect-induced TiS1.94 (D-TiS1.94) as a promising intercalation anode material for ZIBs is designed. The abundant Zn2+-storage active sites and lower Zn2+ migration barrier induced by sulfur defects endow D-TiS1.94 with a high capacity for Zn2+-storage (219.1 mA h g-1 at 0.05 A g-1) and outstanding rate capability (107.3 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1). In addition, a slight volume change of 8.1% is identified upon Zn2+ storage, which favors a prolonged cycling life (50.3% capacity remaining in 1500 cycles). More significantly, the D-TiS1.94||ZnxMnO2 full battery demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 155.7 mA h g-1 with a capacity retention of 59.8% in 400 cycles. It has been estimated that the high-capacity, low-operation voltage, and long-life D-TiS1.94 can be a promising component of the ZIB anode material family, and the strategy proposed in this work will provide guidance to the defect engineering of high-performance electrode materials toward energy storage applications.

Targeted long-read sequencing for comprehensive detection of CYP21A2 mutations in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency

BACKGROUND

21-Hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) is caused by pathogenic CYP21A2 variations. CYP21A2 is arranged in tandem with its highly homologous pseudogene CYP21A1P; therefore, it is prone to mismatch and rearrangement, producing different types of complex variations. There were few reports on using only one method to detect different CYP21A2 variants simultaneously.

AIMS

Targeted long-read sequencing method was used to detect all types of CYP21A2 variants in a series of patients with 21-OHD.

METHODS

A total of 59 patients with 21-OHD were enrolled from Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Long-range locus-specific PCR and long-read sequencing (LRS) were performed to detect the pathogenic variants in CYP21A2.

RESULTS

Copy-number variants of CYP21A2 were found in 25.4% of patients, including 5.1% with 3 copies of CYP21A2, 16.9% with 1 copy of CYP21A2, and 3.4% with 0 copy of CYP21A2. The remaining 74.6% of patients had 2 copies of CYP21A2. Pathogenic variants were identified in all 121 alleles of 59 patients. Specifically, single-nucleotide variants and small insertions/deletions (< 50 bp) were detected in 79 alleles, of which conversed from CYP21A1P were detected in 63 alleles, and rare variants were found in the other 16 alleles. Large gene conversions (> 50 bp) from pseudogene were detected in 10 alleles, and different chimeric genes (CYP21A1P/CYP21A2 or TNXA/TNXB) formed by large deletions were detected in 32 alleles. Of all variants, p.I173N was the most common variant (19.0%).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study demonstrated that targeted long-read sequencing is a comprehensive method for detecting CYP21A2 variations, which is helpful for genetic diagnosis in 21-OHD patients.

Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

[A prospective study of association between physical activity and ischemic stroke in adults]

Objective: To explore the prospective associations between physical activity and incident ischemic stroke in adults. Methods: Data of China Kadoorie Biobank study in Tongxiang of Zhejiang were used. After excluding participants with cancers, strokes, heart diseases and diabetes at baseline study, a total of 53 916 participants aged 30-79 years were included in the final analysis. The participants were divided into 5 groups according to the quintiles of their physical activity level. Cox proportional hazard regression models was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HR) for the analysis on the association between baseline physical activity level and risk for ischemic stroke. Results: The total physical activity level in the participants was (30.63±15.25) metabolic equivalent (MET)-h/d, and it was higher in men [(31.04±15.48) MET-h/d] than that in women [(30.33±15.07) MET-h/d] (P<0.001). In 595 526 person-years of the follow-up (average 11.4 years), a total of 1 138 men and 1 082 women were newly diagnosed with ischemic stroke. Compared to participants with the lowest physical activity level (<16.17 MET-h/d), after adjusting for socio-demographic factors, lifestyle, BMI, waist circumference, and SBP, the HRs for the risk for ischemic stroke in those with moderate low physical activity level (16.17-24.94 MET-h/d), moderate physical activity level (24.95-35.63 MET-h/d), moderate high physical activity level (35.64-43.86 MET-h/d) and the highest physical activity level (≥43.87 MET-h/d) were 0.93 (95%CI: 0.83-1.04), 0.87 (95%CI: 0.76-0.98), 0.82 (95%CI: 0.71-0.95) and 0.76 (95%CI: 0.64-0.89), respectively. Conclusion: Improving physical activity level has an effect on reducing the risk for ischemic stroke.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

LiNO3 -Based Electrolytes via Electron-Donation Modulation for Sustainable Nonaqueous Lithium Rechargeable Batteries

LiPF6 as a dominant lithium salt of electrolyte is widely used in commercial rechargeable lithium-ion batteries due to its well-balanced properties, including high solubility in organic solvents, good electrochemical stability, and high ionic conductivity. However, it suffers from several undesirable properties, such as high moisture sensitivity, thermal instability, and high cost. To address these issues, herein, we propose an electron-donation modulation (EDM) rule for the development of low-cost, sustainable, and electrochemically compatible LiNO3 -based electrolytes. We employ high donor-number solvents (HDNSs) with strong electron-donation ability to dissolve LiNO3 , while low donor-number solvents (LDNSs) with weak electron-donation ability are used to regulate the solvation structure to stabilize the electrolytes. As an example, we design the LiNO3 -DMSO@PC electrolyte, where DMSO acts as an HDNS and PC serves as an LDNS. This electrolyte exhibits excellent electrochemical compatibility with graphite anodes, as well as the LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 cathodes, leading to stable cycling over 200 cycles. Through spectroscopy analyses and theoretical calculation, we uncover the underlying mechanism responsible for the stabilization of these electrolytes. Our findings provide valuable insights into the preparation of LiNO3 -based electrolytes using the EDM rule, opening new avenues for the development of advanced electrolytes with versatile functions for sustainable rechargeable batteries.

Aromatic Ketones as Mild Presodiating Reagents toward Cathodes for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Chemical presodiation (CP) is an effective strategy to enhance energy density of sodium ion batteries. However, the sodiation reagents reported so far are basically polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) wth low reductive potential (~0.1 V vs. Na+ /Na), which could easily cause over-sodiation and structural deterioration of the presodiated cathodes. In this work, Aromatic ketones (AKs) are rationally designed as mild presodiating reagents by introducing a carbonyl group (C=O) into PAHs to balance the conjugated and inductive effect. As the representatives, two compounds 9-Fluorenoneb (9-FN) and Benzophenone (BP) manifest favorable equilibrium potential of 1.55 V and 1.07 V (vs. Na+ /Na), respectively. Note that 9-FN demonstrates versatile presodiating capability toward multiple Na uptake hosts (tunneled Na0.44 MnO2 , layered Na0.67 Ni0.33 Mn0.67 O2 , polyanionic Na4 Fe2.91 (PO4 )2 P2 O7 , Na3 V2 (PO4 )3 and Na3 V2 (PO4 )2 F3 ), enabling greatly improved initial charging capacity of the cathode to balance the irrevisible capacity of the anode. Our results indicate that the Aromatic ketones are competitive presodiating cathodic reagents for high-performance sodium-ion batteries, and will inspire more studies and application attempts in the future.

A dynamical measure of the black hole mass in a quasar 11 billion years ago

Tight relationships exist in the local Universe between the central stellar properties of galaxies and the mass of their supermassive black hole (SMBH)1-3. These suggest that galaxies and black holes co-evolve, with the main regulation mechanism being energetic feedback from accretion onto the black hole during its quasar phase4-6. A crucial question is how the relationship between black holes and galaxies evolves with time; a key epoch to examine this relationship is at the peaks of star formation and black hole growth 8-12 billion years ago (redshifts 1-3)7. Here we report a dynamical measurement of the mass of the black hole in a luminous quasar at a redshift of 2, with a look back in time of 11 billion years, by spatially resolving the broad-line region (BLR). We detect a 40-μas (0.31-pc) spatial offset between the red and blue photocentres of the Hα line that traces the velocity gradient of a rotating BLR. The flux and differential phase spectra are well reproduced by a thick, moderately inclined disk of gas clouds within the sphere of influence of a central black hole with a mass of 3.2 × 108 solar masses. Molecular gas data reveal a dynamical mass for the host galaxy of 6 × 1011 solar masses, which indicates an undermassive black hole accreting at a super-Eddington rate. This suggests a host galaxy that grew faster than the SMBH, indicating a delay between galaxy and black hole formation for some systems.

Autonomic neural regulation in mediating the brain-bone axis: mechanisms and implications for regeneration under psychological stress

Efficient regeneration of bone defects caused by disease or significant trauma is a major challenge in current medicine, which is particularly difficult yet significant under the emerging psychological stress in the modern society. Notably, the brain-bone axis has been proposed as a prominent new concept in recent years, among which autonomic nerves act as an essential and emerging skeletal pathophysiological factor related to psychological stress. Studies have established that sympathetic cues lead to impairment of bone homeostasis mainly through acting on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their derivatives with also affecting the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC)-lineage osteoclasts, and the autonomic neural regulation of stem cell lineages in bone is increasingly recognized to contribute to the bone degenerative disease, osteoporosis. This review summarizes the distribution characteristics of autonomic nerves in bone, introduces the regulatory effects and mechanisms of autonomic nerves on MSC and HSC lineages, and expounds the crucial role of autonomic neural regulation on bone physiology and pathology, which acts as a bridge between the brain and the bone. With the translational perspective, we further highlight the autonomic neural basis of psychological stress-induced bone loss and a series of pharmaceutical therapeutic strategies and implications toward bone regeneration. The summary of research progress in this field will add knowledge to the current landscape of inter-organ crosstalk and provide a medicinal basis for the achievement of clinical bone regeneration in the future.

Genome-wide association studies and Mendelian randomization analyses provide insights into the causes of early-onset colorectal cancer

BACKGROUND

The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC; diagnosed <50 years of age) is rising globally; however, the causes underlying this trend are largely unknown. CRC has strong genetic and environmental determinants, yet common genetic variants and causal modifiable risk factors underlying EOCRC are unknown. We conducted the first EOCRC-specific genome-wide association study (GWAS) and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to explore germline genetic and causal modifiable risk factors associated with EOCRC.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We conducted a GWAS meta-analysis of 6176 EOCRC cases and 65 829 controls from the Genetics and Epidemiology of Colorectal Cancer Consortium (GECCO), the Colorectal Transdisciplinary Study (CORECT), the Colon Cancer Family Registry (CCFR), and the UK Biobank. We then used the EOCRC GWAS to investigate 28 modifiable risk factors using two-sample MR.

RESULTS

We found two novel risk loci for EOCRC at 1p34.1 and 4p15.33, which were not previously associated with CRC risk. We identified a deleterious coding variant (rs36053993, G396D) at polyposis-associated DNA repair gene MUTYH (odds ratio 1.80, 95% confidence interval 1.47-2.22) but show that most of the common genetic susceptibility was from noncoding signals enriched in epigenetic markers present in gastrointestinal tract cells. We identified new EOCRC-susceptibility genes, and in addition to pathways such as transforming growth factor (TGF) β, suppressor of Mothers Against Decapentaplegic (SMAD), bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and phosphatidylinositol kinase (PI3K) signaling, our study highlights a role for insulin signaling and immune/infection-related pathways in EOCRC. In our MR analyses, we found novel evidence of probable causal associations for higher levels of body size and metabolic factors-such as body fat percentage, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, basal metabolic rate, and fasting insulin-higher alcohol drinking, and lower education attainment with increased EOCRC risk.

CONCLUSIONS

Our novel findings indicate inherited susceptibility to EOCRC and suggest modifiable lifestyle and metabolic targets that could also be used to risk-stratify individuals for personalized screening strategies or other interventions.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Mo3S13 Cluster-Based Cathodes for Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries: Reversible Magnesium Association/Dissociation at the Bridging Disulfur along with Sulfur-Sulfur Bond Break/Formation

Multivalent cation batteries are attracting increasing attention in energy-storage applications, but reversible storage of highly polarizing multivalent cations is a major difficulty for the electrode materials. In the present study, charge-delocalizing Mo3S13 cluster-based materials (crystalline (NH4)2Mo3S13 and amorphous MoSx) are designed and investigated as cathodes for rechargeable magnesium batteries. Both of the cathodes show high magnesium storage capacities (296 and 302 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1) and superior rate performances (76 and 80 mAh g-1 at 15 A g-1). A high area loading of 3.0 mg cm-2 could be achieved. These performances are of the highest level compared with those of reported magnesium storage materials. Further mechanism study and theoretical computation demonstrate the magnesium storage active sites are the bridging disulfur groups of the Mo3S13 cluster. The valence state of bridging disulfur decreases/increases largely during magnesiation/demagnesiation along with breaking/formation of the sulfur-sulfur bond, which makes the Mg-association/dissociation highly reversible. The sulfur-sulfur bond breaking and formation provides high reversible capacities. Prominently, the valence state increase and sulfur-sulfur bond formation of the bridging disulfur during charge weakens the bonding with Mg2+, significantly assisting the magnesium dissociation. The present study not only develops high-performance magnesium storage cathode materials but also demonstrates the importance of constructing favorable magnesium storage active sites in the high-performance cathode materials design. The findings presented herein are of great significance for the development of electrode materials for the storage of multivalent cations.

[The mechanism of NRF2 inhibiting ROS induced autophagy to reduce ovarian granulosa cells damage]

This study explores the effects and possible mechanisms of nuclear factor E2 related factor 2 (NRF2) on ovarian granulosa cells, providing a scientific basis to prevent premature ovarian failure. An ovarian cell injury model was constructed by treating human ovarian granulosa cell (KGN cell) with 4-Vinylcyclohexene dioxide (VCD). Firstly, KGN cells were treated with different concentrations of VCD, and cell counting kit 8 (CCK-8) was used to detect ovarian cell proliferation. After determining IC50 by CCK8, the levels of estradiol and progesterone in the cell supernatant were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay kit was used to detect the content of ROS in ovarian cells, real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT PCR) was used to detect the mRNA expression level of NRF2, and Western blot was used to detect the protein expression level of NRF2. Further, NRF2 silence (siNRF2) and overexpression (NRF2-OE) cell models were constructed through lentivirus transfection, and the effects of regulating NRF2 on VCD treated cell models were investigated by detecting hormone levels, oxidative stress indicators (ROS, SOD, GSH-Px), and autophagy (LC3B level). The results showed that VCD intervention inhibited the proliferation of ovarian granulosa cells in a time-dependent and dose-dependent manner (F>100, P<0.05), with an IC50 of 1.2 mmol/L at 24 hours. After VCD treatment, the level of estradiol in the cell supernatant decreased from (56.32±10.18) ng/ml to (24.59±8.75) ng/ml (t=5.78, P<0.05). Progesterone decreased from (50.25±7.03) ng/ml to (25.13±6.67) ng/ml (t=6.54, P<0.05). After VCD treatment, the SOD of cells decreased from (44.47±7.71) ng/ml to (30.92±4.97) ng/ml (t=3.61, P<0.05). GSH-Px decreased from (68.51±10.17) ng/ml to (35.19±6.59) ng/ml (t=5.73, P<0.05). Simultaneously accompanied by an increase in autophagy and a decrease in NRF2. This study successfully constructed KGN cell models that silenced NRF2 and overexpressed NRF2. Subsequently, this study treated each group of cells with VCD and found that the cell proliferation activity of the siNRF2 group was significantly reduced (t=8.37, P<0.05), while NRF2-OE could reverse the cell activity damage caused by VCD (t=3.37, P<0.05). The siNRF2 group had the lowest level of estradiol (t=5.78, P<0.05), while NRF2-OE could reverse the decrease in cellular estradiol levels caused by VCD (t=5.58, P<0.05). The siNRF2 group had the lowest progesterone levels (t=3.02, P<0.05), while NRF2-OE could reverse the decrease in cellular progesterone levels caused by VCD (t=2.41, P<0.05). The ROS level in the siNRF2 group was the highest (t=2.86, P<0.05), NRF2-OE could reverse the increase in ROS caused by VCD (t=3.14, P<0.05), the SOD enzyme content in the siNRF2 group was the lowest (t=2.98, P<0.05), and NRF2-OE could reverse the decrease in SOD enzyme content caused by VCD (t=4.72, P<0.05). The GSH-Px enzyme content in the siNRF2 group was the lowest (t=3.67, P<0.05), and NRF2-OE could reverse the decrease in antioxidant enzyme content caused by VCD (t=2.71, P<0.05). The LC3B level was highest in the siNRF2 group (t=2.45, P<0.05), and NRF2-OE was able to reverse the LC3B elevation caused by VCD (t=9.64, P<0.05). In conclusion, NRF2 inhibits ROS induced autophagy, thereby playing a role in reducing ovarian granulosa cell damage, which may be a potential target for premature ovarian failure.

[Quantitative analysis of risk assessment indicators for re-introduction of imported malaria in China]

OBJECTIVE

To quantitatively analyze the risk indicators of re-introduction of imported malaria in China and their weighting coefficients, so as to investigate the difference in the contribution of risk indicators included in the current risk assessment framework for re-introduction of imported malaria in China to the risk assessment of re-introduction of imported malaria.

METHODS

Publications pertaining to the risk assessment framework for re-introduction of imported malaria in China that reported the risk indicators and their weighting coefficients were retrieved in PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang Data, and VIP with terms of "malaria", "re-introduction/re-transmission/re-establishment", "risk assessment/risk evaluation/risk prediction" from the inception of the database through 3 August 2023, and literature search was performed in Google Scholar to ensure the comprehensiveness of the retrieval. Basic characteristics of included studies were extracted using pre-designed information extraction forms by two investigators, and data pertaining to risk indicators of re-introduction of imported malaria were cross-checked by these two investigators. The risk indicators included in the risk assessment framework for re-introduction of imported malaria in China and their weighting coefficients were visualized with the Nightingale's rose diagrams using the software R 4.2.1, and the importance of risk indictors was evaluated with the frequency of risk indicators included in the risk assessment framework and the ranking of weighting coefficients of risk indicators. In addition, the capability of risk indicators screened by different weighting methods was compared by calculating the ratio of the maximum to the minimum of the weighting coefficients of the risk indicators screened by different weighting methods.

RESULTS

A total of 2 138 publications were retrieved, and following removal of duplications and screening, a total of 8 publications were included in the final analysis. In these 8 studies, 8 risk assessment frameworks for re-introduction of imported malaria in China and 52 risk indicators of re-introduction of imported malaria were reported, in which number of imported malaria cases (n = 8) and species of malaria vectors were more frequently included in the risk assessment frameworks (n = 8), followed by species of imported malaria parasites (n = 6) and population density of local malaria vectors (n = 6), and species of local malaria vectors (n = 6), number of imported malaria cases (n = 5) and species of imported malaria parasites had the three highest weighting coefficients (n = 4). The weighting methods included expert scoring method, combination of expert scoring method and analytic hierarchy process, and combination of expert scoring method and entropy weight method in these 8 studies, and the ratios of the maximum to the minimum of the weighting coefficients of the risk indicators screened by the expert scoring method were 1.143 to 2.241, while the ratios of the maximum to the minimum of the weighting coefficients of the risk indicators screened by combination of the expert scoring method and analytic hierarchy process were 34.970 to 162.000.

CONCLUSIONS

Number of imported malaria cases, species of imported malaria parasites, species of local malaria vectors and population density of local malaria vectors are core indicators in the current risk assessment framework for re-introduction of imported malaria in China. Combination of the expert scoring method and analytic hierarchy process is superior to the expert scoring method alone for weighting the risk indicators.

Stationary striations in plasma, created by a short microwave pulse in a waveguide filled with a neutral gas

It was observed experimentally that after crossing a waveguide filled with a neutral gas a short powerful microwave pulse leaves a periodic glow of plasma along the waveguide, persisting for several tens of nanoseconds. A theoretical model is presented which in combination with numerical simulations proposes a possible explanation for this phenomenon.

Enabling Ultralow-Temperature (-70 °C) Lithium-Ion Batteries: Advanced Electrolytes Utilizing Weak-Solvation and Low-Viscosity Nitrile Cosolvent

Low-temperature performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has always posed a significant challenge, limiting their wide application in cold environments. In this work, the high-performance LIBs working under ultralow-temperature conditions, which is achieved by employing the weak-solvation and low-viscosity isobutyronitrile as a cosolvent to tame the affinity between solvents and lithium ions, is reported. The as-prepared electrolytes exhibit a sufficiently high conductivity (1.152 mS cm-1 ) at -70 °C. The electrolytes enable LiCoO2 cathode and graphite anode to achieve high Coulombic efficiency of >99.9% during long-term cycling at room temperature, and to respectively achieve 75.8% and 100.0% of their room-temperature capacities at -40 °C. Even the LiCoO2 //graphite pouch cells can retain 68.7% of the room-temperature capacity when discharged at -70 °C, and present stable cycling performance at -40 and 60 °C. This work provides a solution for the development of advanced electrolytes to enable LIBs working at wide-temperatures range.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Electron-Positron and Neutral-Pion Final States with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying into νe^{+}e^{-} or νπ^{0} final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's main injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01×10^{20} protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the mixing parameter |U_{μ4}|^{2} in the mass ranges 10≤m_{HNL}≤150  MeV for the νe^{+}e^{-} channel and 150≤m_{HNL}≤245  MeV for the νπ^{0} channel, assuming |U_{e4}|^{2}=|U_{τ4}|^{2}=0. Observation of WZγ Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst)  fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06  fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

[Outcomes and care practices of extremely preterm infants at 22-25 weeks' gestation age from the Chinese Neonatal Network]

Objective: To describe the current status and trends in the outcomes and care practices of extremely preterm infants at 22-25 weeks' gestation age from the Chinese Neonatal Network (CHNN) from 2019 to 2021. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the CHNN cohort of very preterm infants. All 963 extremely preterm infants with gestational age between 22-25 weeks who were admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) of the CHNN from 2019 to 2021 were included. Infants admitted after 24 hours of life or transferred to non-CHNN hospitals were excluded. Perinatal care practices, survival rates, incidences of major morbidities, and NICU treatments were described according to different gestational age groups and admission years. Comparison among gestational age groups was conducted using χ2 and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Trends by year were evaluated by Cochran-Armitage and Jonckheere-Terpstra tests for trend. Results: Of the 963 extremely preterm infants enrolled, 588 extremely preterm infants (61.1%) were male. The gestational age was 25.0 (24.4, 25.6) weeks, with 29 extremely preterm infants (3.0%), 88 extremely preterm infants (9.1%), 264 extremely preterm infants (27.4%), and 582 extremely preterm infants (60.4%) at 22, 23, 24, and 25 weeks of gestation age, respectively. The birth weight was 770 (680, 840) g. From 2019 to 2021, the number of extremely preterm infants increased each year (285, 312, and 366 extremely preterm infants, respectively). Antenatal steroids and magnesium sulfate were administered to 67.7% (615/908) and 51.1% (453/886) mothers of extremely preterm infants. In the delivery room, 20.8% (200/963) and 69.5% (669/963) extremely preterm infants received noninvasive positive end-expiratory pressure support and endotracheal intubation. Delayed cord clamping and cord milking were performed in 19.0% (149/784) and 30.4% (241/794) extremely preterm infants. From 2019 to 2021, there were significant increases in the usage of antenatal steroids, antenatal magnesium sulfate, and delivery room noninvasive positive-end expiratory pressure support (all P<0.05). Overall, 349 extremely preterm infants (36.2%) did not receive complete care, 392 extremely preterm infants (40.7%) received complete care and survived to discharge, and 222 extremely preterm infants (23.1%) received complete care but died in hospital. The survival rates for extremely preterm infants at 22, 23, 24 and 25 weeks of gestation age were 10.3% (3/29), 23.9% (21/88), 33.0% (87/264) and 48.3% (281/582), respectively. From 2019 to 2021, there were no statistically significant trends in complete care, survival, and mortality rates (all P>0.05). Only 11.5% (45/392) extremely preterm infants survived without major morbidities. Moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (67.3% (264/392)) and severe retinopathy of prematurity (61.5% (241/392)) were the most common morbidities among survivors. The incidences of severe intraventricular hemorrhage or periventricular leukomalacia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis were 15.3% (60/392), 5.9% (23/392) and 19.1% (75/392), respectively. Overall, 83.7% (328/392) survivors received invasive ventilation during hospitalization, with a duration of 22 (10, 42) days. The hospital stay for survivors was 97 (86, 116) days. Conclusions: With the increasing number of extremely preterm infants at 22-25 weeks' gestation admitted to CHNN NICU, the survival rate remained low, especially the rate of survival without major morbidities. Further quality improvement initiatives are needed to facilitate the implementation of evidence-based care practices.

Regional variations in retinopathy of prematurity incidence for preterm infants <32 weeks' gestation in China

OBJECTIVES

National-level data on the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in different regions of China is insufficient. This study aimed to compare ROP incidences and care practices in different regions of China and their relationship with regional gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective cohort study.

METHODS

All infants born at <32 weeks gestational age (GA) and admitted to 70 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2020, were enrolled. Hospitals were categorised into three regional groups according to geographical locations and GDP per capita from high to low: Eastern, Central, and Western China. The incidence of death or ROP, and care practices were compared among the groups.

RESULTS

A total of 18,579 infants were enrolled. Median GA was 29.9 (interquartile range 28.4-31.0) weeks and birth weight was 1318.1 (317.2) g. The percentage of GA <28 weeks, complete administration of antenatal steroids, and weight gain velocity during NICU stay were highest in Eastern China and lowest in Western China (all P < 0.01). In Eastern, Central, and Western China, the rates of death or any stage of ROP were 33.3%, 38.5%, and 39.2%, respectively (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

There were considerable regional disparities in ROP incidence in preterm infants with GA <32 weeks in China. The incidence of death or ROP ranged from high to low in Western, Central, and Eastern China.

Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Trials Unit (DIAN-TU): Trial Satisfaction and Attitudes towards Future Clinical Trials

BACKGROUND

Clinical trial satisfaction is increasingly important for future trial designs and is associated with treatment adherence and willingness to enroll in future research studies or to recommend trial participation. In this post-trial survey, we examined participant satisfaction and attitudes toward future clinical trials in the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Trials Unit (DIAN-TU).

METHODS

We developed an anonymous, participant satisfaction survey tailored to participants enrolled in the DIAN-TU-001 double-blind clinical trial of solanezumab or gantenerumab and requested that all study sites share the survey with their trial participants. A total of 194 participants enrolled in the trial at 24 study sites. We utilized regression analysis to explore the link between participants' clinical trial experiences, their satisfaction, and their willingness to participate in upcoming trials.

RESULTS

Survey responses were received over a sixteen-month window during 2020-2021 from 58 participants representing 15 study sites. Notably, 96.5% of the survey respondents expressed high levels of satisfaction with the trial, 91.4% would recommend trial participation, and 96.5% were willing to enroll again. Age, gender, and education did not influence satisfaction levels. Participants reported enhanced medical care (70.7%) and pride in contributing to the DIAN-TU trial (84.5%). Satisfaction with personnel and procedures was high (98.3%). Respondents had a mean age of 48.7 years, with most being from North America and Western Europe, matching the trial's demographic distribution. Participants' decisions to learn their genetic status increased during the trial, and most participants endorsed considering future trial participation regardless of the DIAN-TU-001 trial outcome.

CONCLUSION

Results suggest that DIAN-TU-001 participants who responded to the survey exhibited high motivation to participate in research, overall satisfaction with the clinical trial, and willingness to participate in research in the future, despite a long trial duration of 4-7 years with detailed annual clinical, cognitive, PET, MRI, and lumbar puncture assessments. Implementation of features that alleviate barriers and challenges to trial participation is like to have a high impact on trial satisfaction and reduce participant burden.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare Z Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

[Technical specification for orthodontic transmission straight wire technique]

Malocclusion is an oral disease with a high prevalence. The goal of orthodontic treatment is health, aesthetics, function and stability. The transmission straight wire appliance and technique is an innovative orthodontic system with independent intellectual property rights invented by Professor Jiuxiang Lin's team based on decades of clinical experience, which provides a new solution for the non-surgical correction of skeletal malocclusions, especially class Ⅲ malocclusion, and it is also a good carrier for the implementation of the concept of healthy orthodontics. Due to the lack of guidelines, how to implement standardized application of transmission straight wire technique remains a problem to be solved. This technical specification was formed by combining the guidance from Professor Jiuxiang Lin and joint revision by a number of authoritative experts from the Orthodontic Special Committee, Chinese Stomatological Association, with reference to relevant literatures, and combined with abundant clinical experience of many experts. This specification aims to provide reference to standardize the clinical application of transmission straight wire technique, so as to reduce the risk and complications, and finally to improve the clinical application level of this technique.

Correlating the Solvating Power of Solvents with the Strength of Ion-Dipole Interaction in Electrolytes of Lithium-ion Batteries

The solvation structure of Li+ plays a significant role in determining the physicochemical properties of electrolytes. However, to date, there is still no clear definition of the solvating power of different electrolyte solvents, and even the solvents that preferentially participate in the solvation structure remain controversial. In this study, we comprehensively discuss the solvating power and solvation process of Li+ ions using both experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations. Our findings reveal that the solvating power is dependent on the strength of the Li+ -solvent (ion-dipole) interaction. Additionally, we uncover that the anions tend to enter the solvation sheath in most electrolyte systems through Li+ -anion (ion-ion) interaction, which is weakened by the shielding effect of solvents. The competition between the Li+ -solvent and Li+ -anion interactions ultimately determines the final solvation structures. This insight into the fundamental understanding of the solvation structure of Li+ provides inspiration for the design of multifunctional mixed-solvent electrolytes for advanced batteries.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Prophylactic therapy for prevention of surgical site infection after extraction of third molar: An overview of reviews

BACKGROUND

To compare the effect of different prophylactic therapies on prevention of surgical site infection after extraction of third molars with different degree of impaction.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating the effect of different prophylactic therapies on prevention of surgical site infection after extraction of third molars were included. An electronic search was performed in PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic reviews. AMSTAR 2 tool was used to evaluate the confidence in results from the included reviews. Descriptive analyses were performed.

RESULTS

Six reviews were included. A significant benefit of different antibiotics to the prevention of site infection after extraction of third molars was reported. Amoxicillin/amoxicillin clavulanic acid could significantly reduce the rate of surgical site infection versus placebo. Chlorhexidine gel could significantly reduce the frequency of alveolar osteitis versus placebo.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the limited evidence, there is a significant benefit of prophylactic therapy while the comparative effect of different types of prophylactic regimes are controversial.

Identification of cortisol metabolites with LC-MS/MS in plasma, skin mucus, bile and faeces for stress evaluation of farmed Atlantic salmon

As a stress hormone, cortisol and more recently its metabolites are analysed when assessing fish stress and welfare status, although the exact identity of these metabolites is not clearly defined for the Atlantic salmon. LC-MS/MS techniques, owing to their specificity, sensitivity and ability to simultaneously identify and measure several relevant compounds, can be useful tools for this purpose. Using the guidelines provided by the European Decision no. 657/2002/EC for validation, the LC-MS/MS method presented here, can reliably identify and quantify cortisol and five of its metabolites (5β-THF, cortisone, 5β-DHE, 5β-THE and β-cortolone) in bile and faeces, and cortisol and cortisone in skin mucus and blood plasma of farmed Atlantic salmon within 15 min. Identified as the most predominant compound in faeces and bile, 5β-THE is proposed as a candidate stress biomarker when using these matrices. A decision limit (CCα) below 5 ng/mL, a detection capability (CCβ) and a limit of detection (LOD) below 10 ng/mL and a limit of quantitation (LOQ) below 30 ng/mL were typically obtained for most of the compounds. The concentrations of these compounds measured in either non-stressed or stressed fish were all above the CCα, CCβ, LOD and the LOQ of the method. The latter consequently demonstrated significant difference in cortisol metabolites concentrations between the two groups of fish. The present study further demonstrates that pooling of samples from several individuals could provide reliable results for farmed fish stress evaluation, when sample materials are insufficient in terms of quantity.

[A single-center study on the oncological outcomes of active surveillance of thyroid nodules measuring≤1 cm with highly suspicious ultrasound features]

Objective: To investigate the oncological outcomes of active surveillance (AS) in patients showing thyroid nodules measuring≤1 cm with highly suspicious ultrasound features. Methods: A prospective single-center cohort study. A total of 534 patients with highly suspicious thyroid nodules (2015 American Thyroid Association Nodule Sonographic Patterns and Risk of Malignancy: High Suspicion) were enrolled in this study, the patients received AS at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between January 2017 and November 2022 to assess oncological outcomes (disease progression, recurrence/metastasis rate, etc). The patients were followed up every 6 months for physical examination and neck ultrasound examination. And the value of tumor volume changes in evaluating tumor enlargement was explored too. Results: There were 413 females and 121 males in this cohort, with a mean age of (42.6±11.8) years. During a median follow-up period of 45.6 months (ranged from 3.5 to 176.0 months), disease progression occurred in 26 patients (4.9%) with highly suspicious thyroid nodules, characterized by a minimum 3-mm increase in tumor diameter in 19 patients (3.6%) and lymph node metastases in 7 patients (1.3%). Forty-seven (8.8%) patients opted for delayed surgery, with 29 patients due to a change in preference. There was no significant differences in pathologic and follow-up outcomes between patients with disease progression and preference change. Patients aged≤40 years had a higher cumulative incidence of 5-year disease progression than those aged>40 years (4.9% vs 1.9%, P=0.060). No patients experienced distant metastases or deaths. Among the 595 high-risk thyroid nodules with continuous volume assessment results and an increase in nodule diameter of less than 3 mm (including all high-risk nodules in patients with single or multiple nodules), 184 (30.9%) and 79 (13.3%) nodules exhibited volume increases of more than 50% and 100%, respectively, in multiple measurements. Among the nodules with volume changes exceeding 50% and 100%, the proportion of nodules with a baseline tumor diameter of≤0.5 cm was significantly higher than those with a diameter of>0.5 cm, at 69.0% vs 31.0% (P<0.001) and 77.2% vs 22.8% (P<0.001), respectively. Conclusions: Active surveillance in patients with highly suspicious subcentimeter thyroid nodules has good short-term oncological outcomes and can be considered a safe alternative to surgery. Due to the large variability in the measurement results of tumor volume, it is not suitable as an indicator for evaluating tumor enlargement.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72  nb^{-1} and 257  pb^{-1} of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. [Systematic analysis of liver failure accompanied with hemophagocytic syndrome in adults]

Objective: To retrospectively analyze literature reports and summarize the clinical characteristics of liver failure in patients accompanied with adult hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS). Methods: The Wanfang, CNKI, VIP, PubMed, and Ovid databases were searched for relevant literature on liver failure patients accompanied with adult HPS published from January 1980 to May 2022. The final included literature was systematically reviewed after screening. Results: There were a total of 77 liver failure cases accompanied with adult HPS, with an average age of (41.8 ± 12.5) years. The most common clinical manifestations of these cases were persistent high fever, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, and severe jaundice. The imaging changes were not specific, and the most common was hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory examination showed a significant increase in serum total bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase, triglycerides, and soluble interleukin-2 receptor levels, as well as serum ferritin, while there was a decrease in prothrombin activity, natural killer cell activity, and hemocytopenia of two or more lineages in peripheral blood. Myelogram examination showed hemophagocytosis. Adult HPS secondary to infection was more likely to be accompanied with liver failure (55.8%), with an overall case fatality rate of 84.4%. Conclusion: Patients with liver failure accompanied with adult HPS have an extremely high mortality rate and a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis and treatment are the keys to improving the prognosis.

Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

[Characteristics and impact factors of SARS-CoV-2 infection in adult patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma receiving chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy]

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics and treatment of COVID-19 infection in patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma before and after receiving chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, and study the influencing factors of severe COVID-19 infection in these patients. Methods: The data of 59 patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma who received chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy at the Department of Hematology, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Department of Hematology, the Second Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University between December 2017 and February 2023, and who were infected with novel coronavirus between December 2022 and February 2023 were retrospectively studied. Patients were divided into light, medium, severe, and critical groups, and the differences between the groups were analyzed using the chi-square test. A univariate logistic regression model was used to evaluate the contribution of each variable and its relationship with severe infection. The chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze the differences between the B-cell aplasia and B-cell recovery (BCR) groups. Results: Of the 59 pre- and post-infusion infections, 39 (66.1%) led to mild COVID-19, 9 (15.3%) resulted in moderate COVID-19, 10 (16.9%) resulted in severe COVID-19, and 1 (1.7%) led to critical COVID-19. Moroever, age greater than 55 years, having received autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, progressive disease status, and B-cell aplasia at the time of diagnosis of COVID-19 infection are factors affecting severe infection. Patients with B-cell aplasia had a more severe infection with COVID-19 (P<0.001), a longer duration (P=0.015), a longer antiviral therapy course (P<0.001), and a higher hospitalization rate (P<0.001) than the BCR group. Conclusion: Active prevention and treatment of COVID-19 infection remains a crucial issue requiring urgent attention in managing patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma treated with chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. [Treatment of patent ductus arteriosus in very preterm infants in China]

Objective: To describe the current status and trends in the treatment of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) among very preterm infants (VPI) admitted to the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) of the Chinese Neonatal Network (CHNN) from 2019 to 2021, and to compare the differences in PDA treatment among these units. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study based on the CHNN VPI cohort, all of 22 525 VPI (gestational age<32 weeks) admitted to 79 tertiary NICU within 3 days of age from 2019 to 2021 were included. The overall PDA treatment rates were calculated, as well as the rates of infants with different gestational ages (≤26, 27-28, 29-31 weeks), and pharmacological and surgical treatments were described. PDA was defined as those diagnosed by echocardiography during hospitalization. The PDA treatment rate was defined as the number of VPI who had received medication treatment and (or) surgical ligation of PDA divided by the number of all VPI. Logistic regression was used to investigate the changes in PDA treatment rates over the 3 years and the differences between gestational age groups. A multivariate Logistic regression model was constructed to compute the standardized ratio (SR) of PDA treatment across different units, to compare the rates after adjusting for population characteristics. Results: A total of 22 525 VPI were included in the study, with a gestational age of 30.0 (28.6, 31.0) weeks and birth weight of 1 310 (1 100, 1 540) g; 56.0% (12 615) of them were male. PDA was diagnosed by echocardiography in 49.7% (11 186/22 525) of all VPI, and the overall PDA treatment rate was 16.8% (3 795/22 525). Of 3 762 VPI who received medication treatment, the main first-line medication used was ibuprofen (93.4% (3 515/3 762)) and the postnatal day of first medication treatment was 6 (4, 10) days of age; 59.3% (2 231/3 762) of the VPI had been weaned from invasive respiratory support during the first medication treatment, and 82.2% (3 092/3 762) of the infants received only one course of medication treatment. A total of 143 VPI underwent surgery, which was conducted on 32 (22, 46) days of age. Over the 3 years from 2019 to 2021, there was no significant change in the PDA treatment rate in these VPI (P=0.650). The PDA treatment rate decreased with increasing gestational age (P<0.001). The PDA treatment rates for VPI with gestational age ≤26, 27-28, and 29-31 weeks were 39.6% (688/1 737), 25.9% (1 319/5 098), and 11.4% (1 788/15 690), respectively. There were 61 units having a total number of VPI≥100 cases, and their rates of PDA treatment were 0 (0/116)-47.4% (376/793). After adjusting for population characteristics, the range of standardized ratios for PDA treatment in the 61 units was 0 (95%CI 0-0.3) to 3.4 (95%CI 3.1-3.8). Conclusions: From 2019 to 2021, compared to the peers in developed countries, VPI in CHNN NICU had a different PDA treatment rate; specifically, the VPI with small birth gestational age had a lower treatment rate, while the VPI with large birth gestational age had a higher rate. There are significant differences in PDA treatment rates among different units.

Outcomes of Brain Metastases with Suspicious Imaging Undergoing Resection to Evaluate for Radionecrosis vs. Tumor Progression

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

In patients treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brain metastases, radiographic changes on surveillance imaging may result from treatment effect/radionecrosis (RN) or tumor progression. Distinguishing between these processes is critical to appropriate management. We report long-term outcomes for a cohort of patients who demonstrated radiographic progression on serial imaging after initial radiation and ultimately underwent resection to inform further management.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A retrospective chart review identified 76 patients with an associated 82 brain lesions between 2009 and 2022 that were initially treated with SRS, then demonstrated suspicious imaging changes developing through at least two scan time points that led to pathologic confirmation of either tumor or RN. We report clinical outcomes and details of further treatments.

RESULTS

Of the 82 lesions, 55 (67.1%) were found to be pathologically-confirmed viable tumor and were treated with repeat radiation and 27 (32.9%) were found to be strictly RN and conservatively managed. Over half of the lesions (14/27) ultimately found to be radionecrotic required use of steroids pre-operatively due to neurologic symptoms. Among the 27 that were found to be RN, the most common histology was melanoma (33.3%, n = 9). The most common dose fractionation regimen was 20 Gy in 1 fx (n = 11, 40.7%; range: 16-20 Gy x 1Fx), and the median BED (10) was 50.4 Gy (IQR 41.6 - 50 Gy). None of these lesions required further intervention with median post-surgery follow up of 24.4 months (range 1-104 months). There were 55 instances (in 51 patients) of pathologically-confirmed recurrent/progressive tumor who were consequently treated with repeat radiation with either Cs-131 brachytherapy (12 (21.8%)) or SRS (43 (78.2%)). The most common histology was NSCLC (37.2%, n = 19). The most common fractionation for repeat irradiation with SRS was 8 Gy x 3 fx (n = 15, 27.3%), followed by 5 Gy x 5 fx (n = 10, 18.2%), and 4 Gy x 5 fx (n = 8, 14.6%). Four individuals each had two lesions that were re-irradiated for local recurrence. Among patients treated with re-irradiation, the median follow-up to local failure was 15.2 months (95% CI 7.3-26.6 months). Radionecrosis was confirmed on pathology in 4/55 (7.2%) of lesions. The median follow-up from date of SRS2 to local failure was 14.1 months (95% CI 7.6-24.3 months). The 2-yr local control rate was 74.8% (95% CI 61.7-90.7%).

CONCLUSION

We recommend cautious monitoring of possible progression after radiosurgery, with consideration of resection for continuous progression, as a significant proportion of radiographic progression are ultimately pure RN. Management determined by pathology (observation for RN; additional radiation for confirmed tumor) leads to excellent control.

Automatic Prediction of Metastasis-Free Survival (MFS) Using Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) PET for Oligometastatic Castration-Sensitive Prostate Cancer (omCSPC)

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Recent data have shown the promise of metastasis-directed therapy (MDT) to improve outcomes in omCSPC patients. Response biomarkers are still needed to identify patients at an early time point who will not respond to the treatment. We have shown that PSMA PET-CT SUVmax changes over time may be a useful response biomarker that correlates with MFS, an important endpoint in these omCSPC patients. This study investigated radiomic imaging biomarkers derived from PSMA-PET acquired pre- and post-MDT for MFS prediction, which may provide better features to discriminate response in the future to improve the outcome of these patients.

MATERIALS/METHODS

We accrued an international multi-institutional cohort of omCSPC patients treated with stereotactic ablative radiation therapy (SABR) MDT. The cohort includes 32 patients from Institution 1 (USA) and 38 patients from Institution 2 (Europe). Both pre- and 6-month post-treatment PSMA-PET/CT were acquired. Combat was used for data harmonization in the image domain to minimize imaging variations across institutions. We defined the GTV volume as zone 1 and a 3-5 mm expansion ring area outside the GTV as zone 2 for radiomics analysis. 874 radiomics features (214 original and 660 wavelet filtered features) were extracted from both zones using open-source software and used together for MFS prediction. Function Chi2 was used to select the most significant five features. Several machine learning models (Random Forest, Logistic regression, Support Vector Machine, Naïve Bayesian) were implemented to predict MFS. The models were tested using both a leave-one-out strategy and cross-validation across the two institutions.

RESULTS

In the leave-one-out biomarker using 70 patients, random forest achieved the best accuracy, with MFS predicted correctly for 56 (80% of 70) patients. The five radiomic features identified based on their ability to predict MFS included Entropy, Skewness, and Compactness from zone 1, Skewness, and Mesh volume from zone 2. In the cross-institution tests, random forest predicted MFS correctly for 24 (75% of 32) patients when being trained using 38 Institution 2 patients and validated against 32 Institution 1 patients. Vice versa, the model predicted MFS correctly for 28 (74% of 38) patients when being trained using Institution 1 patients and validation using Institution 2 patients. The five features identified for prediction included Entropy and Skewness from both zones and Flatness from zone 1.

CONCLUSION

Our study demonstrated the promise of using pre- and post-MDT PSMA-PET-based imaging radiomic biomarkers for MFS prediction for omCSPC patients. Imaging biomarkers predictive of MFS were identified in both GTV and the ring area outside GTV. Over 74% prediction accuracy was achieved in the cross-institution validation test. The model provides a valuable tool for prognosis prediction early following MDT, which opens up a unique opportunity for monitoring or treatment interventions for patients identified with poor prognoses to improve outcomes.

Active screening and patient-placement and cohort-placement strategies to decrease carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacilli colonization and infection in pediatric patients: A 5-year retrospective observational study in China

Carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacilli (CR-GNB) colonization screening was initiated across high-risk departments (PICU, NICU, neonatal wards, and hematology departments) in January 2017, and several CR-GNB cohort and patient-placement strategies were introduced throughout the hospital in January 2018. The colonization and infection rates decreased to varying degrees from 2017 to 2021.

Biological Effective Dose (BED) in Evaluation of Rectal Dose in Prostate Cancer Patients with Hydrogel Spacer Who Underwent an EBRT with Different Fractionation Schemes

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

To evaluate rectal dose sparing in prostate cancer patients with hydrogel spacer who underwent an external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) with different fractionation schemes.

MATERIALS/METHODS

In a previous study, we have reported that rectal sparing was achieved in prostate cancer patients with hydrogel spacer who underwent a combination therapy of EBRT and LDR brachytherapy (Zhang H, et al. J Appl Clin Med Phys, 2022). In this study, we focused on evaluation of spacer-related rectal sparing in patients who underwent an EBRT with conventional fractionation (81 Gy in 45 fractions), hypofractionation (70 Gy in 28 fractions), or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for 40 Gy or 42.5 Gy in 5 fractions. In 172 patients, 119 patients were applied with injection of polyethylene-glycol hydrogel and others without the injection as control. In VMAT plans, doses to rectal wall were examined and converted to BED according to AAPM TG-137 (α/β ratio = 4 Gy).

RESULTS

On average, an interspace of 1cm between prostate and rectum was achieved by spacer insertion. Rectal wall was defined as 0.4cm thickness inside the outer contour of rectum, and the volume ranged from 4.5 cm3 to 21.3cm3 for patients with spacer and from 8.2cm3 to 35.1cm3 for those with no spacer. In conventional scheme, an average rectal BED was 120.0 Gy, 116.9 Gy, 114.0 Gy, 108.6 Gy, 87.6 Gy and 55.6 Gy to the volume of 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10cm3, respectively, and BEDmean was 55.3 Gy in patients with no spacer. The BED decreased to 105.1 Gy, 96.3 Gy, 86.1 Gy, 75.4 Gy, 51.7 Gy and 26.9 Gy to the volume of 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10cm3, respectively (p < 0.01), and BEDmean was 46.0 Gy in patients with spacer. In hypofractionation, rectal BED was in average of 115.8 Gy, 112.3 Gy, 109.8 Gy, 103 Gy, 81.6 and 52.8 Gy to the volume of 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10cm3, respectively, and BEDmean was 48.6 Gy in patients with no spacer. Patients with spacer had significantly decreases of rectal BED, an average of 103 Gy, 91.7 Gy, 84.1 Gy, 72.8 Gy, 48.8 Gy and 26.0 Gy to the volume of 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10cm3, respectively (p < 0.01), BEDmean was 42.4 Gy. In SBRT, average rectal BED in patients with spacer decreased to 93.6 Gy, 78.4 Gy, 69 Gy, 57.5 Gy, 38.5 Gy and 21.5 Gy, in comparison of 124.1 Gy, 117,4 Gy, 110.9 Gy, 97.3 Gy, 59.7 Gy and 32.3 Gy to the volume of 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10cm3 in those without spacer, respectively (p <0.01). BEDmean decreased to 32.0 Gy in patient with spacer, compared with 43.2 Gy in those with no spacer.

CONCLUSION

Insertion of hydrogel spacer significantly improved rectal dose sparing, about 11.1% to 50.8% in conventional scheme, 12.4% to 51.6% in hypofractionation scheme, and 24.6% to 40.9% in SBRT patients. Furthermore, relatively more dose sparing on rectum was seen on the volume from 0.1cm3 to 2cm3 in SBRT patients.

Implementation of L4 Automation for Patient-Specific Quality Assurance Using the AUTOFRAME Platform and a Robotic Mechanism

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

The AUTOFRAME platform has been previously developed for automating clinical workflows and has achieved L3 automation for patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA). The aim of this study is to further develop the platform to achieve L4 automation, which extends AUTOFRAME to operate Varian's control console (VCC) for the linear accelerator. The goal is to automate all PSQA operations outside of the treatment room.

MATERIALS/METHODS

The automated stages, listed in Table 1, are ranging from L0 to L5. The current study focuses on L4 automation of PSQA, which uses a 6-axis robot arm to control buttons on the VCC. The robotic arm is mounted on a custom frame that is attached onto the VCC to maintain its relative position. The arm is controlled through python scripts, which is run on a raspberry pi and communicates with the AUTOFRAME platform via the PyFlow and AutoFlow subsystems. This integration allows the robotic arm to receive commands from AutoFlow and execute them through PyFlow, activating real-time button-pressing actions.

RESULTS

The integrated L4 system was tested using real PSQA verification plans, which involved a minimum of 4 actions and a maximum of 9 actions on the VCC, including a couch kick that required overriding the couch position. The results showed that the 6-axis arm was able to correctly execute the action groups and guide the robotic arm to consistently press and hold each button with sufficient force and accuracy. All buttons on the VCC, including the Motion-enable, Preparing, Readying, and Delivering buttons, were correctly pushed and held according to the PSQA steps. The system successfully delivered all beams without interruption, and all beam delivery data was collected by the detector for PSQA analysis.

CONCLUSION

The study has further developed the AUTOFRAME platform for L4 automation of PSQA procedures can be achieved. The robotic arm is capable of pushing all required buttons, eliminating all human interactions on the VCC. When combined with previous L0-L3 automations, this will move towards full automation of PSQA procedures. Future work will focus on improving the system's flexibility, stability, and extending its operations to other QA tasks.

An Automated Brain Metastasis Detection and Segmentation System from MRI with a Large Multi-Institutional Dataset

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Developments of automated systems for brain metastasis (BM) detection and segmentation from MRI for assisting early detection and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) have been reported but most based upon relatively small datasets from single institutes. This work aims to develop and evaluate a system using a large multi-institutional dataset, and to improve both identification of small/subtle BMs and segmentation accuracy of large BMs.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A 3D U-Net system was trained and evaluated to detect and segment intraparenchymal BMs with a size > 2mm using 1856 MRI volumes from 1791 patients treated with SRS from seven institutions (1539 volumes for training, 183 for validation, and 134 for testing). All patients had 3D post-Gd T1w MRI scans pre-SRS. Gross tumor volumes (GTVs) of BMs for SRS were curated by each institute first. Then, additional efforts were spent to create GTVs for the untreated and/or uncontoured BMs, including central reviews by two radiologists, to improve accuracy of ground truth. The training dataset was augmented with synthetic BMs of 3773 MRIs using a 3D generative pipeline. Our system consists of two U-Nets with one using small 3D patches dedicated for detecting small BMs and another using large 3D patches for segmenting large BMs, and a random-forest based fusion module for combining the two network outputs. The first U-Net was trained with 3D patches containing at least one BM < 0.1 cm3. For detection performance, we measured BM-level sensitivity and case-level false-positive (FP) rate. For segmentation performance, we measured BM-level Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and 95-percentile Hausdorff distance (HD95). We also stratified performances based upon BM sizes.

RESULTS

For 739 BMs in the 134 testing cases, the overall lesion-level sensitivity was 0.870 with an average case-level FP of 1.34±1.92 (95% CI: 1.02-1.67). The sensitivity was >0.969 for the BMs >0.1 cm3, but dropped to 0.755 for the BMs < 0.1 cm3 (Table 1). The average DSC and HD95 for all detected BMs were 0.786 and 1.35mm. The worse performance for BMs > 20 cm3 was caused by a case with 83 cm3 GTV and artifacts in the MRI volume.

CONCLUSION

We achieved excellent detection sensitivity and segmentation accuracy for BMs > 0.1 cm3, and promising performance for small BMs (<0.1cm3) with a controlled FP rate using a large multi-institutional dataset. Real Time Volumetric MRI for MR-Guided 3D Motion Tracking via Sparse Prior-Augmented Neural Representation Learning

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

To reconstruct volumetric MRI from orthogonal cine acquisition aided by sparse priors of 2 static 3D MRI through implicit neural representation (NeRP) learning, with the goal of eliminating large-scale training datasets for data-driven sparse MRI reconstruction and supporting clinical workflow of real time 3D motion tracking during MR-guided radiotherapy.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A multi-layer perceptron network was trained to learn the NeRP of a patient-specific MRI dataset, where the network takes 4D data coordinates of voxel locations and motion states as inputs and outputs corresponding voxel intensities. By first learning the NeRP of 2 static 3D MRI with different breathing motion states, prior knowledge of patient breathing motion was embedded into network weights through optimization. The prior knowledge was then augmented from 2 to 31 motion states by querying the optimized network at interpolated/extrapolated motion state coordinates. Starting from the prior-augmented network as an initialization point, the network was further trained using sparse samples of 2 orthogonal cine slices. The final volumetric reconstruction was obtained by querying the trained network at desired 3D spatial locations. We evaluated the proposed method using 5-minute volumetric MRI time series with 340 ms temporal resolution collected from 7 liver carcinoma patients. The time series was acquired using golden-angle radial MRI sequence and reconstructed through retrospective sorting. Two MRI with inhale and exhale states respectively were selected from the first 30 sec of the time series for prior embedding and augmentation. The remaining 4.5-min time series was used for volumetric reconstruction evaluation, where we retrospectively subsampled each MRI to 2 orthogonal slices and compared network-reconstructed images to ground truth images in terms of image quality and the capability of supporting 3D target motion tracking.

RESULTS

Across the 7 patients evaluated, the peak signal to noise ratio between model reconstruction and ground truth was 54.66 ± 6.16 dB and the structural similarity index measure was 0.99 ± 0.01. Gross tumor volume (GTV) contours estimated by deforming a reference state MRI to model-reconstructed and ground truth MRI showed good consistency. The 95-percentile Hausdorff distance between GTV contours was 1.89 ± 1.13 mm, which is less than the voxel dimension. The mean GTV centroid position difference between ground truth and model estimation was less than 1 mm in all 3 orthogonal directions.

CONCLUSION

Volumetric MRI from orthogonal cine acquisition with sparse priors is feasible by modeling prior knowledge through implicit neural representation learning. The model-reconstructed images showed sufficient accuracy in supporting 3D motion tracking of abdominal targets. By eliminating the need for large scale training datasets, the method promises to enable clinical implementation of 3D motion tracking for precision radiation therapy.

Auto Assistant VMAT Planning with HID Automation

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

To develop a complete, robust, adaptable and fully customizable software interface for assisting treatment planning procedures on FDA approved commercial system. This will standardize treatment planning process and provide opening interface to other third-party clinical software packages, and introduce AI inference to optimize plan without breaking current clinical planning workflow.

MATERIALS/METHODS

Based on our clinical planning workflow, Varian Eclipse TPS were used. The general HID interface AUTOFLOW was developed with scripting language AutoIt and includes optical character reorganization (OCR) ability. The AUTOFLOW is fully customizable and adaptable for different VMAT planning process. The planning workflow and objective constraints template defined by Northwell health, CFAM are applied. AUTOFLOW operates automatically 3 standard planning interfaces (contouring, external beam planning and optimization) of Eclipse based on information in action tables. The information in the tables, such as auxiliary structures, field set up and initial optimization parameters, can be preset according to the plan template or from other 3rd party packages. Based on Northwell CFAM clinical planning protocol, the planning starts from post-contour approval. AUTOFLOW operates Eclipse to create auxiliary structures, set up planning fields then initiate plan optimization. During the optimization, the AUTOFLOW fills the constraint parameters and monitor the objective goals achievement by OCR. The updated parameters are introduced with our developing machine learning package. The whole planning process were assisted by AUTOFLOW automatically, while the planner can intercept the planning process as need.

RESULTS

The general interface, AUTOFLOW was developed and applied to automatically assist the VMAT procedure in prostate cases. For each prostate case, more than 213 human HID operations on computers were removed from the plan procedure in our CFAM planning protocol. 12 prostate cases without manual interception were tested. The interface succeeds to reducing the VMAT planning time and planner still own the planning control.

CONCLUSION

The AUTOFLOW software interface can be used to perform VMAT planning in current commercial clinical planning system. It can automatically assist planner operation and provide standard interface to 3rd party software packages. The future works will focus on building a cohesive UI, reducing the time further by improving the prediction of optimization parameters and other treatment sites.
