Abstract
Background: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of 2.5 and 1.25 mg nebulized salbutamol on Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn (TTN) compared with placebo. Methods: We conducted a triple-blind, phase II/III parallel randomized controlled trial in two university-affiliated hospitals with neonatal intensive care units. Newborns with a confirmed diagnosis of TTN, with gestational age >35 weeks and gestational weight >2 kg were included. Cases of asphyxia, meconium aspiration syndrome, and persistent pulmonary hypertension were excluded. Ninety eligible patients were randomly allocated in three intervention groups (2.5 mg salbutamol, 1.25 mg salbutamol, and placebo), and a single-dose nebulized product was prescribed 6 hours after the birth. Safety outcomes included postintervention tachycardia, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, and changes in blood pressure. To evaluate the efficacy, the duration of postintervention tachypnea, TTN clinical score, and clinical and paraclinical respiratory indices were assessed. Parents, Outcome assessors, and data analyzer were blind to the intervention. Results: There was no adverse reaction, including tachycardia, hypokalemia, and jitteriness. Both groups of salbutamol recipients showed significant improvement regarding respiratory rate, TTN clinical score, and oxygenation indices compared with the placebo (p-values <0.001). Nonstatistically significant higher hospital stay was observed in the placebo group. Single 2.5 mg salbutamol nebulization showed a little better outcome than the dose of 1.25 mg, although we could not find statistical superiority. Conclusion: The newly applied single high dose of 2.5 mg nebulized salbutamol is safe in treating TTN and leads to notable faster improvement of respiratory status without any considerable adverse reaction. Abstract
BACKGROUND The inflammatory mediators produced after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are reaching peripheral organs causing organ and tissue damage, including the liver. Our study assessed the effect of intravenous (i.v.) infusion of oral mesenchymal stem cells (OMSCs) on TBI-induced liver damage by measuring liver inflammatory factors and liver oxidative stress. METHODS Twenty-eight adult male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: 1) sham control; 2) TBI alone (TBI); 3) TBI vehicle (Veh)-control; and 4) TBI with OMSC treatment (SC). OMSCs were obtained from oral mucosa biopsies. OMSCs were administered and administered i.v. at 1 and 24 h after TBI. Within 48 h after TBI, multiple parameters were analyzed, including inflammation, oxidative stress, and histopathological changes. RESULTS In comparison to sham controls, the TBI alone showed in liver significantly increased levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β; P < 0.001), interleukin-6 (IL-6; P < 0.001), malondialdehyde (MDA; P < 0.001), and protein carbonyl (PC; P < 0.001). At the same time the TBI alone decreased the liver levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD; P < 0.001), total antioxidant capacity (TAC; P < 0.001), catalase (CAT; P < 0.001), and interleukin-10 (IL-10; P < 0.001). In comparison to the TBI alone group, the therapeutic group treated with i.v. infusion of OMSCs demonstrated significantly reduced changes of IL-1β (P < 0.001), IL-6 (P < 0.01), MDA (P < 0.01), PC (P < 0.05), SOD (P < 0.001), TAC (P < 0.01), CAT (P < 0.01), and IL-10 (P < 0.01). Histopathological evaluation showed in TBI alone group that the total score of liver tissue injury included extensive hydropic degeneration, lobular necrosis, inflammation as well as central vein congestion with subendothelial hemorrhage increased compared the sham group (P < 0.001). Administration of OMSC showed significantly smaller increase in the injury score compared to the TBI alone group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Therapy with i.v. OMSCs administration after TBI reduces liver injury, as measured by inflammation and oxidative stress. The use of OMSCs can be considered for treatment of liver injury caused by TBI.

Abstract
Disruption of leptin (LEP) signaling in the hypothalamus caused by type 2 diabetes (T2D) can impair appetite regulation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the improvement in appetite regulation induced by high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in rats with T2D can be mediated by LEP signaling. In this study, 20 male Wister rats were randomly assigned to one of four groups: CO (non-type 2 diabetes control), T2D (type 2 diabetes), EX (non-type 2 diabetes exercise), and T2D + EX (type 2 diabetes + exercise).To induce T2D, a combination of a high-fat diet for 2 months and a single dose of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg) was administered. Rats in the EX and T2D + EX groups performed 4-10 intervals of treadmill running at 80-100% of their maximum velocity (Vmax). Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), serum levels of insulin (INS) and LEP (LEPS) as well as hypothalamic expression of LEP receptors (LEP-R), Janus kinase 2 (JAK-2), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT-3), neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related protein (AGRP), pro-opiomelanocortin cocaine (POMC), amphetamine-related transcript (CART), suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS3), forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1) were assessed. ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests were used to compare the results between the groups. The levels of LEPS and INS, as well as the levels of LEP-R, JAK-2, STAT-3, POMC, and CART in the hypothalamus were found to be higher in the T2D + EX group compared to the T2D group. On the other hand, the levels of HOMA-IR, NPY, AGRP, SOCS3, and FOXO1 were lower in the T2D + EX group compared to the T2D group (P < 0.0001). The findings of this study suggest that HIIT may improve appetite regulation in rats with T2D, and LEP signaling may play a crucial role in this improvement. Abstract
Introduction This study was performed to evaluate the effects of low and moderate treadmill exercise for one month on social interaction, anxiety-like behaviors, and spatial learning and memory in male and female autistic rats. Methods Pregnant rats received valproic acid (VPA) (600 mg/kg/i.p) once on gestational day 12.5 to induce autism-like symptoms in the offspring. After delivery, the offspring were divided into six main groups, each with male and female subgroups: Control (CTL, prenatal normal saline), autism (prenatal VPA), low-intensity training (LIT,normal saline + low treadmill exercise), moderate -intensity training (MIT, normal saline + moderate treadmill exercise), VPA + LIT, and VPA + MIT. On the 60th day, the offspring were tested by the elevated plus maze (EPM), open field test (OFT), social interaction test (SIT), and Morris water maze (MWM). Results The results showed that both LIT and MIT could partly alleviate anxiety-like behaviors induced by prenatal VPA exposure in two sexes. Social impairment was observed in the autistic rats and was improved by LIT in both sexes and MIT in females. No significant change was seen in the spatial learning and memory of autistic rats by exercise. Conclusion The findings suggest that treadmill exercise can be helpful for improving some autism-like behaviors. Further studies are needed to investigate the involved mechanisms.

Abstract
Adipokines dysregulation, the main reason for cognitive impairments (CI) induced by diabetes, shows a sex-dependent pattern inherently and in response to exercise. This study aimed to compare the attenuating effect of 8-week high intensity-interval training (HIIT) on type 2 diabetes (T2D)-induced CI between male and female rats with a special focus on adiponectin and leptin. 28 male & 28 female Wistar rats with an average age of 8 weeks were randomly assigned into four groups: control (Con), exercise (EX), Diabetes (T2D), and Type 2 diabetes + exercise (T2D + Ex). Rats in EX and T2D + EX groups performed HIIT for eight weeks (80-100% Vmax, 4-10 intervals). T2D was induced by 2 months of a high-fat diet and a single dose of STZ (35 mg/kg) administration. Leptin and adiponectin levels in serum were measured along with hippocampal expression of leptin and adiponectin receptors, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), dephosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (Dep-GSK3β), Tau, and beta-amyloid (Aβ). Homeostasis model assessments (HOMAs) and quantitative insulin-sensitivity check index (QUICKI) indices were calculated. Our results showed that following T2D, serum levels of APN, and hippocampal levels of adiponectin receptor 1 (APNR1) were higher and HOMA-IR was lower in female than male rats (P < 0.05). However, after 8 weeks of HIIT, hippocampal levels of APNR1 and AMPK as well as QUICKI were lower and hippocampal levels of GSK, Tau, and Aβ were higher in females compared to male rats (P < 0.05). While the risk of CI following T2D was more in male than female rats HIIT showed a more ameliorating effect in male animals with APN1 as the main player.

Abstract
People's lifestyles and, especially, their eating habits affect their health and the functioning of the organs in their bodies, including the kidneys. One's diet influences the cells' responses to stressful conditions such as acute kidney injury (AKI). This study aims to determine the preconditioning effects of four different diets: energy restriction (ER) diet, time restriction (TR) eating, intermittent fasting (IF), and high-fat diet (HF) on histopathological indices of the kidney as well as the molecules involved in apoptosis during AKI. Adult male rats underwent ER, TR, IF, and HF diets for eight weeks. Then, AKI was induced, and renal function indices, histopathological indices, and molecules involved in apoptosis were measured. In animals with AKI, urinary albumin excretion, serum urea, creatinine and, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio increased in the kidney, while renal eGFR decreased. ER and TR diets improved renal parameters and prevented an increase in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. The IF diet improved renal parameters but had no effect on the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. On the other hand, the HF diet worsened renal function and increased the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. Histopathological examination also showed improved kidney conditions in the ER and TR groups and more damage in the HF group. This study demonstrated that ER and TR diets have renoprotective effects on AKI and possibly cause the resistance of kidney cells to damage by reducing the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and improving apoptotic conditions.

Abstract
Background: Phlebotomus and Sergentomya are distributed in the old-world regions and transmit leishmaniases through mammalian and reptile hosts. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the most important diseases in Iran. Iranian sand flies belong to three Oriental, Palearctic, and Afrotropical Regions. Fars Province is located in Palearctic, but southern parts are affected Oriental region situations on phglebotomine population variety. Therefore, a comprehensive study was required on the vectors of the disease in this Province.
Methods: Regarding the approved role of the environmental factors in creating the fauna and distribution of living creatures, the “de martonne climate method” was used, and the climate was noticed as an important environmental factor for the determination of vector distribution. Accordingly, 14 sampling sites were selected from 10 foci in different climates of Fars Province. 19648 sand flies were collected from the studied areas in this Province during 2016.
Results: Phlebotomus papatasi and Se. antennata were the most frequent species, which were caught from in/outdoor areas. Phlebotomus sergenti and Ph. alexandri were caught from both Palearctic and Oriental zones but were more prevalent in the cold semi-arid climate of the Palearctic zone. Moreover, they were not caught from the hot desert and summer Mediterranean climates of the Oriental zone.
Conclusions: It seems that Ph. papatasi as the main vector of CL could be well distributed in different climates in Fars. Moreover, some species like Ph. sergenti preferred especial climates in the Palearctic zone. Therefore, these data could be helpful to control leishmaniases more efficiently.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to determine the effect of 8-week high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on oxidative stress and apoptosis in the hippocampus of male rats with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The study focused on examining the role of proliferator-activated receptor gamma co-activator 1α (PGC1α)/Kelch-like ECH-associated protein Keap1/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway. Materials and Methods Twenty-eight 8-week-old Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n=7): control (Con), type 2 diabetes (T2D), exercise (Ex), and exercise + type 2 diabetes (Ex+T2D). The Ex and Ex+T2D groups completed an 8-week exercise program consisting of 80-100% Vmax and 4-10 intervals. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index was used to assess insulin resistance. The levels of Bcl2, BAX, musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma (Maf), Nrf2, Keap1, and PGC1α in the hippocampus were assessed using the western blot method. Additionally, the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the hippocampus were measured using ELISA. Results The findings indicated that the T2D group had lower levels of antioxidant enzymes, Maf, Bcl2, PGC1α, and Nrf2, and higher levels of BAX and Keap1 in the hippocampus. Conversely, the HIIT group exhibited increased levels of antioxidant enzymes, Maf, Bcl2, Nrf2, and PGC1α, along with decreased levels of BAX and Keap1 in the hippocampus. Conclusion The study demonstrated that 8-week HIIT was effective in reducing hippocampal apoptosis and oxidative stress induced by T2D by activating the PGC1α-Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway. The metabolic changes induced by exercise may lead to an increase in PGC1 expression, which is the primary stimulator of the Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Biotic stresses are pests and pathogens that cause a variety of crop diseases and damages. In response to these agents, crops trigger specific defense signal transduction pathways in which hormones play a central role. To recognize hormonal signaling, we integrated barley transcriptome datasets related to hormonal treatments and biotic stresses. In the meta-analysis of each dataset, 308 hormonal and 1232 biotic DEGs were identified respectively. According to the results, 24 biotic TFs belonging to 15 conserved families and 6 hormonal TFs belonging to 6 conserved families were identified, with the NF-YC, GNAT, and WHIRLY families being the most prevalent. Additionally, gene enrichment and pathway analyses revealed that over-represented cis-acting elements were recognized in response to pathogens and hormones. Based on the co-expression analysis, 6 biotic and 7 hormonal modules were uncovered. Finally, the hub genes of PKT3, PR1, SSI2, LOX2, OPR3, and AOS were candidates for further study in JA- or SA-mediated plant defense. The qPCR confirmed that the expression of these genes was induced from 3 to 6 h following exposure to 100 μM MeJA, with peak expression occurring between 12 h and 24 h and decreasing after 48 h. Overexpression of PR1 was one of the first steps toward SAR. As well as regulating SAR, NPR1 has also been shown to be involved in the activation of ISR by the SSI2. LOX2 catalyzes the first step of JA biosynthesis, PKT3 plays an important role in wound-activated responses, and OPR3 and AOS are involved in JA biosynthesis. In addition, many unknown genes were introduced that can be used by crop biotechnologists to accelerate barley genetic engineering.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The benefits of exercise in TBI have been proven. However, the time-dependent effects of exercise initiation and the involved mechanisms are controversial. We investigated the effects of preconditioning, continuous, early, and delayed treadmill exercise on motor behavior, brain edema, inflammation, and oxidative stress in experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI). MATERIALS AND METHODS 48 male rats were assigned into two groups: sedentary control (Sham and TBI) and exercise groups: 1MB (preconditioning, initiation beginning at 1 month before trauma), 1MBA (continuous, initiation beginning at 1 month before and continuing 1 month after trauma), 24hA (early, initiation beginning at 24 h after trauma), and 1WA (delay, initiation beginning at 1 week after trauma). The rats in exercise groups were forced to run on a treadmill five days a week for 30 min per day. Rotarod and open file were used to assess motor behavior. ELISA was also used to measure total antioxidant capacity (TAC), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum and CSF. RESULTS Exercise significantly decreased neurological impairments, motor deficits, and apoptosis compared with the sedentary group. Early (within 24 h) and ongoing (1 MBA) exercise significantly improved motor behavior after TBI. In addition, these exercise programs inhibited brain edema and the number of apoptotic cells. MDA and TNF-α levels increased in all exercise groups, but the effects were greater after early exercise than after delayed exercise, resulting in a significant decrease in TAC levels in serum and CSF. We discovered a positive correlation between MDA, TAC, and TNF-α concentration in serum and CSF. CONCLUSION Our finding suggests that early exercise (24hA) and 1MBA groups afford neuroprotection and reduce the second injury consequence, probably by reducing neuronal apoptosis and oxidative stress.

Abstract
As a significant health challenge, chronic disease can have critical spiritual consequences for patients. Therefore, the study of spiritual well-being as an aspect of health is essential but has been less considered with regard to chronic diseases. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate spiritual well-being in patients with chronic diseases. For this purpose, in the initial search that was performed of valid databases, a total of 615 descriptive studies published between 2000 and 2018 were found. After carefully assessing these, only 24 studies were included in the review. Overall, the spiritual well-being of 3289 patients with chronic disease was investigated. This study showed that the total mean score of the spiritual well-being of patients with chronic diseases was 86.65 (P < 0.001, 95%, CI: 80.34-92.96), indicating a moderate level of spiritual well-being in these patients. Thus, patients with chronic diseases are recommended to consider spiritual consultation programs.

Abstract
In patients with kidney injury, muscle mass and strength decrease with altered muscle protein synthesis and degradation along with complications such as inflammation and low physical activity. A treatment strategy to maintain muscle metabolism in kidney injury is important. One of the proposed strategies in this regard is exercise, which in addition to inducing muscle hypertrophy, reducing plasma creatinine and urea and decreasing the severity of tubal injuries, can boost immune function and has anti-inflammatory effects. One of the molecules that have been considered as a target in the treatment of many diseases is silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1). Exercise increases the expression of SIRT1 and improves its activity. Therefore, studies that examined the effect of exercise on kidney injury considering the role of SIRT1 in this effect were reviewed to determine the direction of kidney injury research in future regarding to its prevalence, especially following diabetes, and lack of definitive treatment. In this review, we found that SIRT1 can be one of renoprotective target pathways of exercise. However, further studies are needed to determine the role of SIRT1 in different kidney injuries following exercise according to the type and severity of exercise, and the type of kidney injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a syndrome characterized by rapid loss of excretory function of kidney. Both exercise and some diets have been shown to increase silent information regulator (SIRT1) expression leading to reduction of kidney injury. In this study, the effect of two different diets during exercise on kidney function, oxidative stress, inflammation and also SIRT1 in AKI was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS A number of rats were randomly divided into four groups; control without exercise, control with exercise, exercise + calorie restriction (CR), and exercise + time restriction (TR). Each group was divided into two subgroups of without AKI and with AKI (six rats in each group). Endurance exercise and diets were implemented before AKI. Serum urea and creatinine, urinary albumin, kidney malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), transforming growth factor (TGF-β1), and SIRT1 levels, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and relative kidney weight were measured before and 24 h after AKI induction. RESULTS After induction of kidney injury, serum urea and creatinine, urinary albumin, kidney MDA and TGF-β1 levels increased in rats with both previous exercise and no previous exercise, while GFR, and kidney TAC and SIRT1 levels significantly decreased. These changes after AKI were less in the group with previous exercise than in the group that had no exercise (p <0.001). The TR diet during exercise caused a less increase in serum urea (p <0.01) and creatinine (p <0.01), and urinary albumin (p <0.001) levels after the injury compared to the just exercise group. Also, both CR and TR diets during exercise caused less change in MDA (p <0.001) and TAC (p <0.05, p <0.001, respectively) levels compared to just exercise group. CONCLUSIONS The results showed that exercise alone had no effect on preventing function impairment of kidney, oxidative stress, inflammation and also SIRT1 alteration following AKI, although these indexes were less among those with exercise than those without exercise. However, when the CR and TR diets were implemented during exercise, strong renoprotective effects appeared, and the protective effect of TR diet was greater.

Abstract
Objectives Lifestyle and eating habits affect the health and function of the body's organs, including the kidneys. The current study was carried out to determine the effects of two types of diet programs, including time restriction (TR) and calorie restriction (CR) on the histopathological changes and apoptotic molecules during acute kidney injury (AKI) in postmenopausal rats. Materials and Methods In this study the female rats were divided into two groups of ovariectomized (OVX) and ovary-intact (sham), then they were placed on TR and CR diets for 8 weeks; afterward, AKI was induced by injection of glycerol. Functional indices, histopathological changes, Bax, and Bcl2 were measured before and after AKI. Results After AKI, creatinine, serum urea, urinary albumin excretion, kidney tissue Bax, and Bax/Bcl2 ratio increased, while glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and kidney tissue Bcl2 decreased compared with before AKI. Histopathological indices (inflammation, cellular necrosis, cell vacuolization, tubular dilatation, intratubular cast, and congestion) also confirmed renal injury. TR and CR diets improved renal injury indices and prevented an increase in the Bax/Bcl2 ratio. However, in some indices, the effects of two diets on OVX animals were not observed. In addition, none of the diets could decrease kidney weight/body weight ratio (KW/BW). The histopathological finding also showed improvement of renal status in both groups, especially in the CR diet. Conclusion The results indicated that TR and CR diets had renoprotective effects against AKI by reducing the Bax/Bcl2 ratio and improving apoptosis. The effects of CR were more than TR.

Abstract
The present study aimed to examine whether the attenuation of estrogen receptor expression is prevented by propyl pyrazole triol (PPT), an agonist for estrogen receptor α (ERα) or and diarypropiolnitrile (DPN), an agonist for estrogen receptor β (ERβ) after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The tests performed on ovariectomized female Wistar rats included sham group, vehicle group, and treated groups: PPT, DPN, and PPT+DPN 30 minutes after TBI. Blood‑brain barrier (BBB) disruption and brain water content were estimated. RT‑PCR and\r\nwestern blotting were utilized to evaluate ESR1 and ESR2 gene and protein expression. The data indicated that PPT, DPN, and PPT+DPN attenuated TBI‑induced brain edema. Also, BBB disruption after TBI was prevented in PPT, DPN, and PPT+DPN‑treated TBI animals. Estrogen agonist‑treated animals showed a significant elevation in Esr1 mRNA and protein expression levels in the brain tissue of TBI rats. In addition, the data indicated a significant elevation of Esr2 mRNA and protein expression levels in the brain tissue of estrogen agonist‑treated TBI rats. The data shows that both ESR1 and ESR2 agonists can enhance ER mRNA and protein levels in TBI animals' brain. It appears that this effect contributes to the neuroprotective function of ER agonists.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Circadian system is deeply involved in renal function. The circadian timing system may be disrupted in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Gender differences in CKD have been reported. This research aimed to investigate the gender differences in the circadian rhythm of inflammatory and oxidant markers of CKD. METHODS Male, intact female, and ovariectomized (OVX) female rats (twenty-four in each group) were randomly assigned to control and CKD groups. The rats were further divided into day (12:00 p.m.) and night (12:00 a.m.) subgroups. Evaluations of each sample were carried out a day after the last day of adenine administration. RESULTS Final results revealed that the circadian rhythm of plasma melatonin , kidney malondialdehyde (MDA), and transforming growth factor- β (TGF-β) levels in CKD group were the same as the control group. Melatonin and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels significantly decreased in the CKD group compared with the control group in day and night subgroups, whereas MDA and TGF-β levels increased. Male group in comparison with the intact female group significantly showed less melatonin and TAC but higher MDA and TGF-β levels which could be due to CKD. CONCLUSION Findings of this study represent gender differences in circadian rhythm amplitude of inflammation, melatonin, and oxidative stress in CKD animals, probably in favor of female sex steroids. These findings emphasize on the importance of gender differences in CKD progression; therefore, considerable attention must be paid to gender in the treatment of CKD. Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality of people at all ages. Biochemical, cellular and physiological events that occur during primary injury lead to a delayed and long-term secondary damage that can last from hours to years. Secondary brain injury causes tissue damage in the central nervous system and a subsequent strong and rapid inflammatory response that may lead to persistent inflammation. However, this inflammatory response is not limited to the brain. Inflammatory mediators are transferred from damaged brain tissue to the bloodstream and produce a systemic inflammatory response in peripheral organs, including the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, renal and endocrine systems. Complications of TBI are associated with its multiple and systemic effects that should be considered in the treatment of TBI patients. Therefore, in this review, an attempt was made to examine the systemic effects of TBI in detail. It is hoped that this review will identify the mechanisms of injury and complications of TBI, and open a window for promising treatment in TBI complications.

Abstract
Objective: Zinc is a trace element, which has been related to inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to evaluate the serum zinc levels in Iranian patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Materials and methods:The present study was conducted on 65 CD patients and 65 healthy controls. Serum zinc levels were measured in both patients and controls and compared by age, sex, and site of inflammation between groups. Results: Mean serum zinc level in the study population was 86.2±17.0 ng/dL. The serum zinc level was 88.1±16.7 ng/dL in CD patients and 86.2±17.0 ng/dL in the control group. The difference between groups was not statistically significant (P=0.191). No significant differences were observed in serum zinc levels of males and females (P=0.087). Zinc deficiency was observed in 21.5% and 7.7% of cases and controls, respectively. Compared to the control group, low serum zinc levels were significantly higher in CD patients (P=0.025). Regarding the site of inflammation, neither the concentration of serum zinc (P=0.058) nor zinc deficiency prevalence (P=0.864) were significantly different in cases compared to controls. Conclusion: The prevalence of zinc deficiency was higher in CD patients compared to controls. However, serum zinc concentrations were not significantly different between groups. Age, sex, and site of inflammation were not found to be predictors of zinc deficiency. Evaluating the zinc status of CD patients for possible supplementation in cases of deficiency is recommended.

Abstract
A new application of the Sohrabi albedo neutron dosimeters is reported for the first time for determination of very low-level neutron ambient dose equivalents on and around a 3.5 kJ plasma focus device (PFD). The Sohrabi dosimeters basically use a polycarbonate track detector as bare and/or in contact with B convertor(s) under special cadmium cover arrangements. Its sensitivity was improved by using enriched B under new cadmium arrangements in order to detect epithermal neutrons in addition to fast and thermal neutrons. Results of 12 dosimeters installed externally around the PFD at different azimuthal (φ) and polar (θ) angles showed that azimuthal (φ) fast, epithermal, thermal, and total neutron ambient dose equivalents were symmetric and isotropic, respectively, with values 55.15 ± 8.36, 1.36 ± 02, 0.53 ± 03, and 57.04 ± 8.62 μSv/shot at ~25 cm from anode top. Polar (θ) neutron ambient dose equivalent values on z-axis relative to 90 angle were relatively higher. Results of 38 dosimeters placed on PFD facility walls for workplace monitoring and on a BOMAB phantom at operator's location for personal dose equivalent determination showed values below minimum detection limits after exposure to 130 PFD shots. However, an operator's personal dose equivalents at ~1.0 and ~3.0 m from the anode top were estimated to be, respectively, ~13.7 and ~1.52 mSv y using azimuthal angle (φ) values if the PFD operates, for example, up to 20 shots per day for 200 d y. Even under such an extreme assumption, annual personal dose equivalent is still much below 20 mSv, the annual ICRP dose limit for workers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of undiagnosed primary immunodeficiency diseases is remarkably high and contributes to increasing the rate of morbidity and mortality among this group of patients. OBJECTIVE To examine the 10 warning sign scoring system in patients suspected of primary immune deficiency and also estimate the diagnostic delay in patients with proven disease. METHODS This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out during the years 2015-2016 in Ali Asghar (AS) Clinic and Hospital. Two hundred patients with suspected primary immune deficiency disease were eligible for inclusion in the study. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the relation between findings. RESULTS In this study, the majority of suspected cases of immunodeficiency were males (57%) with a mean age of 3.33±2.89 years. Twenty-one (10.5%) patients were diagnosed with immunodeficiency disease. The mean diagnostic delay among primary immune deficient patients was 2.05±1.7 years. There was a significant relationship between having parental consanguinity (OR=2.68, 95% CI: 1.07-6.70), allergies (OR=5.03, 95% CI: 1.13-22.31), vaccine adverse effects (OR=9.31, 95% CI: 1.24-69.96) and primary immune deficiency diagnosis. No association was observed between age (OR=0.98, 95% CI: 0.84-1.14), gender (OR=0.99, 95% CI: 0.39-2.47), immune deficiency scoring (OR=0.68, 95% CI: 0.31-1.45) and primary immune deficiency diagnosis. CONCLUSION Ten warning sign scoring system is of less value to consider a patient suspected of having primary immune deficiency. There is a meaningful delay in diagnosis of primary immune deficiencies especially in antibody deficiency defects which seeks further upgrading of knowledge in physicians.

Abstract
The role of classical and non-classical estrogen receptors (ERs) in mediating the neuroprotective effects of this hormone on brain edema and long-term behavioral disorders was evaluated after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Ovariectomized rats were divided as follows: E2 (17 β-estradiol), E2-BSA (E2 conjugated to bovine serum albumin), G1 [G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor agonist (GPER)] or their vehicle was injected following TBI, whereas ICI (classical estrogen receptor antagonist), G15 (GPER antagonist), ICI + G15, and their vehicle were injected before the induction of TBI and the injection of E2 and E2-BSA. Brain water (BWC) and Evans blue (EB) contents were measured 24 h and 5 h after TBI, respectively. Intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) were measured before and at different times after TBI. Locomotor activity, anxiety-like behavior, and spatial memory were assessed on days 3, 7, 14, and 21 after injury. E2, E2-BSA, and G1 prevented the increase of BWC and EB content after TBI, and these effects were inhibited by ICI and G15. ICI and G15 also inhibited the beneficial effects of E2, E2-BSA on ICP, as well as CPP, after trauma. E2, E2-BSA, and G1 prevented the cognitive deficiency and behavioral abnormalities induced by TBI. Similar to the above parameters, ICI and G15 also reversed this E2 and E2-BSA effects on days 3, 7, 14, and 21. Our findings indicated that the beneficial effects of E2-BSA and E2 were inhibited by both ICI and G15, suggesting that GPER and classic ERs were involved in mediating the long-term effects of E2.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a leading cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world, will probably become the third cause of death in the world by the year 2020. Lack of effective treatments approved for TBI is a major health problem. TBI is a heterogeneous disease due to the different mechanisms of injury. Therefore, it requires combination therapies or multipotential therapy that can affect multiple targets. In recent years, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation has considered one of the most promising therapeutic strategies to repair of brain injuries including TBI. In these studies, it has been shown that MSCs can migrate to the site of injury and differentiate into the cells secreting growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines. The reduction in brain edema, neuroinflammation, microglia accumulation, apoptosis, ischemia, the improvement of motor and cognitive function, and the enhancement in neurogenesis, angiogenesis, and neural stem cells survival, proliferation, and differentiation have been indicated in these studies. However, translation of MSCs research in TBI into a clinical setting will require additional preclinical trials.

Abstract
Since no definitive treatment has been suggested for diffuse traumatic brain injury (TBI), and also as the effect of exercise has been proven to be beneficial in neurodegenerative diseases, the effect of endurance exercise on the complications of TBI along with its possible neuroprotective mechanism was investigated in this study. Our objective was to find out whether previous endurance exercise influences brain edema and neurological outcome in TBI. We also assessed the probable mechanism of endurance exercise effect in TBI. Rats were randomly assigned into four groups of sham, TBI, exercise + sham and exercise + TBI. Endurance exercise was carried out before TBI. Brain edema was assessed by calculating the percentage of brain water content 24 h after the surgery. Neurological outcome was evaluated by obtaining veterinary coma scale (VCS) at - 1, 1, 4 and 24 h after the surgery. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl and histopathological changes were evaluated 24 h after the surgery. Previous exercise prevented the increase in brain water content, MDA level, histopathological edema and apoptosis following TBI. The reduction in VCS in exercise + TBI group was lower than that of TBI group. In addition, a decrease in the level of serum IL-1β and the content of brain protein carbonyl was reported in exercise + TBI group in comparison with the TBI group. We suggest that the previous endurance exercise prevents brain edema and improves neurological outcome following diffuse TBI, probably by reducing apoptosis, inflammation and oxidative stress.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of candesartan (angiotensin II type I receptor blocker) alone and its combination with estrogen on the changes in brain edema, intracranial pressure (ICP), and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) following diffuse traumatic brain injury (TBI) in female rats. Methods: TBI was induced in ovariectomized female rats using Marmarou's method. The treatment groups received low-dose (LC) and high-dose (HC) candesartan, estrogen (E2), a combination of estrogen vehicle and candesartan vehicle (oil + vehicle), or a combination of estrogen with low-dose (E2 + LC), or with high-dose (E2 + HC) candesartan. ICP and CPP were measured before and several times after TBI, and the brain water content (brain edema) was measured 24 h after TBI. Results: After the TBI, brain edema and ICP in the estrogen group were lower than in the vehicle and TBI groups. Brain edema and ICP in the HC group were lower than in the vehicle group after TBI. Although there was no significant difference in brain edema and ICP between the LC and vehicle groups, significant differences in these variables were observed when the E2 + LC and E2 + HC groups were compared with the oil + vehicle group after TBI. A significant increase in CPP was observed in the estrogen group 4 and 24 h post-TBI, while this increase was found in the HC and E2 + LC groups 24 h post-TBI. Conclusions: A low dose of candesartan did not exert a protective effect on TBI outcomes, but such an effect did appear after combination with estrogen. This finding suggests that interaction between low-dose candesartan and estrogen improves TBI-induced consequences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of intense intermittent exercise and Ginkgo biloba on the hippocampal levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) and also memory and learning in young rats. METHODS Forty two eight-week-old rats were randomly divided into six groups including control, low dose of Ginkgo biloba (65 mg/kg), high dose of Ginkgo biloba (100 mg/kg), exercise, exercise + low dose of Ginkgo biloba, exercise + high dose of Ginkgo biloba. The exercise protocol or Ginkgo biloba administration was six days a week for six weeks. The hippocampal levels of BDNF and NT-4 were measured by ELISA method, and learning and memory were evaluated by Morris water maze test in all groups. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. RESULTS Increase in hippocampal levels of BDNF and NT-4 appeared following exercise (p < 0.01). The levels do not change following exercise + Ginkgo biloba administration. However, the NT-4 level decreased in the high dose of Ginkgo biloba group (p < 0.01). Disorder in learning and memory was indicated following the use of low dose of Ginkgo biloba or exercise + low dose Ginkgo biloba administration (p < 0.001). Learning elevated in the exercise group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Exercise in young rats may increase brain neurotrophin levels and lead to improved learning. The preventative or protective role of Ginkgo biloba against some diseases has been suggested, but its consumption in young athletes is recommended with caution.

Abstract
Culicidae are highly important for public health as they can be vectors of diseases and are responsible for a wide spectrum of infections. Five collection sites were selected randomly with regards to existing facilities in Firouzabad County. For collecting larvae and total catch for adult mosquitoes, sampling was carried out by dipping technique for collecting larvae and total catch for adult mosquitoes. A total of 689 adults and 1313 larvae of Culicidae were collected, of which 3 genera and 6 species of Culicidae were recognized, namely, Anopheles superpictus, Anopheles d&rsquo;thali, Culex sinaiticus, Culex theileri, Culex mimeticus, and Culiseta longiareolata. Cx. theileri was the most frequent Culicidae collected at Firouzabad, with a total of 613 and 247 larval and adult specimens, respectively. The highest number of mosquitoes was collected in June (31.1%) and the lowest in May (3.4%). The mean temperatures in June and May were 31.3˚C and 28.2˚C, respectively. We found some vectors that are of medical and veterinary importance; our results could be applied in vector control programs that aim at eradication or control of mosquitoes in this area.

Abstract
Brain edema and increased intracranial pressure (ICP) are among the main causes of neurological disturbance and mortality following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Since pregabalin neuroprotective effects have been shown, this study was performed to evaluate the possible neuroprotective effects of pregabalin in experimental TBI of male rats. Adult male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: sham, vehicle, pregabalin 30 mg/kg and pregabalin 60 mg/kg. TBI was induced in vehicle and pregabalin groups by Marmarou method. Pregabalin was administered 30 min after TBI. Sham and vehicle groups received saline. Brain water and Evans blue content and histopathological changes were evaluated 24, 5 and 24 h after TBI, respectively. The ICP and neurological outcomes (veterinary coma scale, VCS) were recorded before, 1 h and 24 h post TBI. The results showed a significant reduction in brain water content and ICP, and a significant increase in VCS of pregabalin group (60 mg/kg) as compared to vehicle group (P < 0.05). Also, pregabalin reduced brain edema and apoptosis score as compared to vehicle group. Post TBI pregabalin administration revealed a delayed but significant improvement in ICP and neurological outcomes in experimental TBI. The underlying mechanism(s) was not determined and needs further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The efficacy of nutrition education on body weight and serum lipids has not yet been described in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). In the present study, we examined the effect of a 7-month nutrition education program on lipid profile and body weight in individuals with SCI. DESIGN Randomized clinical trial. SETTING A tertiary rehabilitation center. PARTICIPANTS Patients with SCI who were referred to Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Research Center. INTERVENTION The nutrition education program consisted of 5 education sessions during a period of 7 months. OUTCOME MEASURES Body weight and serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were measure at the beginning of the trial and after 7 months. Two-way repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. RESULTS Total of 57 patients (27 in control group and 30 in education group) participated. Nutrition education program showed no significant effect on the levels of TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C (P: 0.224, 0.172, 0.107 and 0.081, respectively). No significant changes in weight and waist circumflex have been observed as well (P: 0.970 and 0.361, respectively). CONCLUSION Our findings do not support a significant influence of nutrition education program on weight and lipid profile. It seems that the nutrition education program alone is not adequately effective to have beneficial influence on weight and lipid profile. Clinical trial registration No.: IRCT201406215968N3.

Abstract
Increased levels of inflammatory cytokines after traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to brain edema and neuronal death. In this study, the effect of melatonin on pro-inflammatory (IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines following TBI was investigated considering anti-inflammatory effect of melatonin. Male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: Sham, TBI, TBI + VEH (vehicle), TBI + 5 mg dose of melatonin (MEL5), TBI + 20 mg dose of melatonin (MEL20). Diffuse TBI was induced by Marmarou method. Melatonin was administered 1, 24, 48 and 72 h after TBI through i.p. Brain water content and brain levels of pro-inflammatory (IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines were measured 72 h after TBI. The IL-1ß levels decreased in the TBI + MEL5 and TBI + MEL20 groups in comparison to TBI + VEH group (p < 0.001). The levels of IL-6 and TNF-α also decreased in melatonin-treated groups compared to control group (p < 0.001). The amount of IL-10 decreased after TBI. But melatonin administration increased the IL-10 levels in comparison with TBI + VEH group (p < 0.001). The results showed that melatonin administration affected the brain levels of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines involving in brain edema led to neuronal protection after TBI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES C-reactive protein (CRP) has been shown to correlate with health-related quality of life (HRQL) in some chronic medical conditions. However, these associations have not yet described in spinal cord injury (SCI). In this study, we tried to identify biomarkers associated with HRQL in SCI. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Tertiary rehabilitation center. PARTICIPANTS Referred patients to Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Research Center between November 2010 and April 2013. OUTCOME MEASURE Blood samples were taken to measure circulatory CRP, leptin, adiponectin, ferritin, parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, thyroid hormones, fasting plasma glucose and lipid profile. All the analyses were performed with adjustment for injury-related confounders (level of injury, injury completeness and time since injury) and demographic characteristics. HRQL was measured with Short Form health survey (SF-36). RESULTS The initial inverse association between CRP and total score of SF-36 (P: 0.006, r = -0.28) was lost after adjustment for confounders. However, the negative correlation between CRP and Mental Component Summary (MCS) remained significant (P: 0.0005, r = -0.38). Leptin level was inversely correlated with Physical Component Summary (PCS) (P: 0.02, r = -0.30). CONCLUSION Although CRP and leptin levels were not related with total scores of SF-36 questionnaire, CRP can be more useful in determining mental component of HRQL whereas leptin can be a determinant of physical component. The combined consideration of these two biomarkers may help to predict HRQL in individuals with SCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The probable effect of dietary amino acids intake pattern on serum lipid profile and blood pressure (BP) have not yet been described among individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Tertiary rehabilitation center. PARTICIPANTS People with SCI referred to Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Research Center between 2011 and 2014. OUTCOME MEASURES Dietary intakes were assessed by recording consumed foods by 24-hour dietary recall interviews using Nutritionist IV 3.5.3 modified for Iranian foods. Partial correlation test with adjustment for age, weight, body mass index, total energy intake, total fat, cholesterol and carbohydrate intake, and injury-related variables was used. RESULTS Dietary intake of lysine was positively related to levels of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), triglyceride (TG), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P < 0.0001, 0.046, 0.002 and 0.009, respectively). There was a positive significant relationship between the intake of cysteine and levels of TG and SBP as well (P : 0.027 and 0.048, respectively). Higher intakes of threonine and leucine had a negative relationship with TG level (P : 0.001 and 0.026, respectively). Furthermore, tyrosine, threonine and leucine were inversely correlated to blood pressure. Total cholesterol level was only related to intake of threonine and leucine (P : 0.004 and 0.012, respectively). FPG was positively associated with intake of all amino acids except for cysteine, glutamic acid, threonine, leucine and histidine. CONCLUSION In the present study, the pattern of relationships between dietary intake of amino acids and serum lipid profile and BP has been described among people with SCI.

Abstract
Despite control programs, which aim to eliminate malaria from Iran by 2025, transmission of malaria has not been removed from the country. This study aimed to monitor malaria from asymptomatic parasitaemia and clinical cases from about one year of active case surveillance and potential vectors of malaria in the newly emerged focus of Mamasani and Rostam, southern Iran during 2014-2015. Samples were collected and their DNAs were extracted for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay using specific primers for detection of Plasmodium species. The Annual Parasite Incidence rate (API) was three cases per 1,000 population from 2,000 individuals in three villages. Parasites species were detected in 9 out of the 4,000 blood smear samples among which, 6 cases were indigenous and had no history of travels to endemic areas of malaria. Also, the prevalence rate of asymptomatic parasites was about 0.3%. Overall, 1073 Anopheles spp. were caught from 9 villages. Totally, 512 female samples were checked by PCR, which indicated that none of them was infected with Plasmodium. Despite new malaria local transmission in humans in Mamasani and Rostam districts, no infection with Plasmodium was observed in Anopheles species. Because of neighboring of the studied area to the re-emerged focus in Fars province (Kazerun) and important endemic foci of malaria in other southern provinces, such as Hormozgan and Kerman, monitoring of the vectors and reservoir hosts of Plasmodium species would be unavoidable. Application of molecular methods, such as PCR, can simplify access to the highest level of accuracy in malaria researches.

Abstract
A recent novel development of 50-Hz-HV ECE of 1-mm-thick and 250-µm-thick polycarbonate track detectors (PCTDs) has proved some promising results for some health physics, dosimetry and ion-beam-related applications. The method while proved having some good characteristics for some applications provided a relatively higher background track density (BGTD) in particular when very high voltages are applied to the PCTDs. In order to decrease the minimum detection limit (MDL) of the PCTDs and to further promote its applications for low dose, the BGTD was reduced by applying a layer removal methodology applying ethylendiamine (EDA). The effects of EDA concentrations (50, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85 and 90 %) in water at room temperature (26°C) and soaking durations up to 100 min at different EDA concentration on BGTD reduction were studied. The thickness of the layer removed from the surface of a PCTD highly depends on the soaking time and EDA concentration; it increases as the EDA concentration increases up to for example 700 µm after 2 h of soaking in the EDA solution. After ∼10 min of soaking duration at any of the above-stated concentrations, the BGTD reaches its minimum value, a value which differs from concentration to concentration. An EDA concentration of 85 % in water provided the lowest BGTD of 64.06 ± 3.12 tracks cm- 2; ∼6 times lower than that of its original value. It is shown that the layer removal process does not change the registration characteristics of the PCTD and its appearance significantly. The MDL of the PCTDs depends strongly on the BGTD. The MDL values for a desired confidence level were also studied by three calculation methods. The results of the BGTD and the MDL studies under different conditions applied are presented and discussed.

Abstract
Dermatomyositis is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy that cause skin and muscle complications. The ethiology is not understood well yet. Released cytokines including interferon and interleukins are suggested to make inflammatory responses in the skin or muscle. Muscle weakness and skin lesions including heliotrope rash, shawl sign and Gottron's papules are the most common symptoms. A biopsy (muscle or skin) is always the most reliable method for diagnosis. Corticosteroids in association with immunosuppressive agents are used as standard treatment. The patient was a 30 years old woman who got involved with dermatomyositis for 10 years. She has been under therapy with Methotrexate, Prednisolon and Azathioprine until she came to us suffering from progressive skin lesions. Experiments and examinations were normal except the lesions and detected lipoatrophy. Because of immune cells infiltration and observations necrotizing vasculitis was diagnosed. After three month of high dose prednisolon and intravenous cyclophosphamide therapy the lesions vanished remarkable. True and immediate diagnosis gives physicians the chance not only to assess the best treatment but have adequate time to apply the procedure. However shortening the therapy and diminishing morbidity of the disease need more investigations and efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have demonstrated the effect of different dietary fats on blood pressure (BP) in general population. However, these associations have not yet been described in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS Referred patients to Brain and SCI Research Center between 2011 and 2014 have been invited to participate. Only paraplegic individuals were recruited and patients with injury at cervical or higher thoracic sections were excluded to omit the bias effect of autonomic dysreflexia. Dietary intakes were assessed by recording consumed foods by 24-hour dietary recall interviews using Nutritionist IV 3.5.3 modified for Iranian foods. Systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were measured 3 times and the mean values entered analysis. RESULTS Higher intakes of cholesterol were related to higher BP (P = 0.010 and 0.011 for SBP and DBP, respectively). Similarly, intake of saturated fat was positively correlated to both SBP (P = 0.016, r = 0.21) and DBP (P = 0.011, r = 0.22). The effect of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) on BP was insignificant (P = 0.760 and 0.720 for SBP and DBP, respectively). However, intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was related to lower BP among people with SCI. CONCLUSION This study has demonstrated that higher intakes of cholesterol and saturated fat are associated with increased BP, whereas DHA is an antihypertensive agent. Dietary modifications with reduction of cholesterol and saturated fat along with intake of additional DHA supplements may help to reduce BP in spinal cord injured-individuals with hypertension.

Abstract
Background Improvement of neurologic outcome in progesterone-administered patients with diffuse axonal injury (DAI) has been found in a recent study. Also, there has been interest in the importance of serum parameters as predictors of outcome in traumatic brain injury. Objectives The aim of this study was to examine the effect of progesterone administration on serum levels of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in clinical DAI. Patients and Methods In this study, the serum levels of ICAM-1 and NSE of 32 male DAI patients (18 - 60 years of age, a Glasgow coma scale of 12 or less, and admitted within 4 hours after injury) who were randomized for a controlled phase II trial of progesterone were analyzed. The analysis was performed between the control and progesterone groups at admission time, and 24 hours and six days after DAI, respectively. Results A reduction in the serum level of ICAM-1 was noticed in the progesterone group 24 hours after the injury (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the serum level of NSE between the study groups during evaluation. At 24 hours after the injury, the level of ICAM-1 in the control group was higher than that at admission time (P < 0.05). The lowest level of NSE in the two groups was seen six days after DAI (P < 0.01). Conclusions In summary, progesterone administration reduced serum ICAM-1, and whereby may attenuate blood brain barrier disruption, the latter needs further investigation for confirmation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Plasma lipids (triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C)) may be associated with dietary intakes. The purpose of this study was to identify the most common food patterns among Iranian persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) and investigate their associations with lipid profile. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Tertiary rehabilitation center. PARTICIPANTS Referred individuals to Brain and Spinal Injury Research Center (BASIR) from 2011 to 2014. OUTCOME MEASURES Dietary intakes were assessed by 24-hour dietary recall interviews in three non-consecutive days. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify dietary patterns. RESULTS Total of 100 persons (83 male and 17 female) entered the study. Four food patterns were detected. The most common dietary pattern (Pattern 1) included processed meat, sweets desserts and soft drink and was similar to 'Western' food pattern described previously. Pattern 1 was related to higher levels of TC and LDL-C (r = 0.09; P = 0.04 and r = 0.11; P = 0.03 for TC and LDL-C, respectively) only in male participants. Pattern 2 which included tea, nuts, vegetable oil and sugars had a positive association with TC level (r = 0.11; P = 0.02) again in male participants. Pattern 3 which represented a healthy food pattern showed no significant influence on lipid profiles. CONCLUSION In this study, the four most common dietary patterns among Iranian individuals with SCI have been identified. Western food pattern was the most common diet and was associated with increased TC and LDL-C. The healthy food pattern, in which the major source of calories was protein, was not associated with variance in lipid profile.
