The complete mitochondrial genome of Sarcophaga angarosinica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae)

Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) angarosinica (Rohdendorf, 1937) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a species of both medical and ecological significance. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of S. angarosinica was sequenced and characterized. The mitogenome has a total length of 15,215 bp, including 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and an adenine and thymine-rich region. This mitogenome comprises 39.5% adenine, 9.4% guanine, 14.4% cytosine, and 36.8% thymine. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that S. angarosinica is closely related to Sarcophaga similis. This study enriches the genetic data on S. angarosinica and will contribute to establishing the phylogenetic relationships among flesh flies.

Geographical Distribution and Multimethod Species Identification of Forensically Important Necrophagous Flies on Hainan Island

Forensic entomology offers unique advantages for the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin) estimation of decomposed corpses in forensic investigations. Accurate species identification and up-to-date locality information are essential. Hainan Island has a tropical rainforest climate and a vast territory. In this study, the community structure of necrophagous flies on Hainan Island was investigated in detail according to geographical environment. The results showed that the dominant species included C. megacephala, S. peregrina, C. rufifacies, S. misera, H. ligurriens, S. sericea, S. cinerea, S. dux, C. pinguis, and M. domestica. Furthermore, C. rufifacies and C. villeneuvi were found only in the high-altitude areas of Wuzhi Mountain, while S. cinerea was distributed only in coastal areas; the latter is a representative species of Hainan Island and has not been reported before. Furthermore, a GenBank database of forensically important flies was established, whilst a high-resolution melt (HRM) curve analysis was applied to identify the common species of Hainan Island for the first time. This study enriches the database of forensically important flies in tropical rainforest regions.

Temporal Changes of the Oral and Fecal Microbiota after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Rats by 16S rRNA Sequencing

A mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can increase the risk of neurodegenerative-related disease, and serious long-term outcomes are often overlooked. In forensic science, the accurate identification of mTBIs can directly affect the application of evidence in practice cases. Recent research has revealed that the oral cavity and fecal microbiota play a fundamental role in deeply interconnecting the gut and brain injury. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the temporal changes of the oral cavity and fecal bacterial communities with damage identification and post-injury time estimation after mTBI. In this study, we analyzed the oral cavity and fecal bacterial communities in mTBI rats under 12 different post-injury times (sham, 0 h, 2 h, 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, 2 d, 3 d, 5 d, 7 d, 10 d, and 14 d post-injury) using 16S rRNA sequencing technology. The sequence results revealed bacteria belonging to 36 phyla, 82 classes, 211 orders, 360 families, 751 genera, and 1398 species. Compared to the sham group, the relative abundance of the bacterial communities varied markedly in the post-injury groups. Importantly, our data demonstrated that Fusobacteria, Prevotellaceae, Ruminococcaceae, and Lactobacillaceae might be the potential candidates for mTBI identification, and 2 h post-injury was a critical time point to explore the temporal changes of mTBI injury-time estimation. The results also provide new ideas for mTBI treatment in the clinic.

Research on the Potential Biomarkers of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: a Systematic Review and Bibliometric Analysis

Reliable diagnostic methods for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are lacking, and many researchers continue to search for objective biomarkers that can both define and detect mTBI. Although much research has been conducted in this field, there have not been many bibliometric studies. In this study, we aim to analyze the development over the last two decades in scientific output relating to the diagnosis of mTBI. To do this, we extracted documents from Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase and performed descriptive analysis (number of publications, primary journals, authors, and countries/regions), trend topics analysis, and citation analysis for papers across the globe, with a particular focus on molecular markers. One thousand twenty-three publications spanning 390 journals were identified on Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase for the period from 2000 to 2022. The number of publications increased every year (from 2 in 2000 to 137 in 2022). Of all the publications we analyzed, 58.7% had authors from the USA. Our analysis shows that molecular markers are the most studied markers in the field of mTBI diagnostics, accounting for 28.4% of all publications, and that the number of studies focused on this specific aspect has increased sharply in the past 5 years, indicating that molecular markers may become a research trend in the future.

Petahertz-scale spectral broadening and few-cycle compression of Yb:KGW laser pulses in a pressurized, gas-filled hollow-core fiber

We demonstrate efficient generation of coherent super-octave pulses via a single-stage spectral broadening of a Yb:KGW laser in a single, pressurized, Ne-filled, hollow-core fiber capillary. Emerging pulses spectrally spanning over more than 1 PHz (250-1600 nm) at a dynamic range of ∼60 dB, and an excellent beam quality open the door to combining Yb:KGW lasers with modern light-field synthesis techniques. Compression of a fraction of the generated supercontinuum to intense (8 fs, ∼2.4 cycle, ∼650 µJ) pulses allows convenient use of these novel laser sources in strong-field physics and attosecond science.

Characterized Gene Repertoires and Functional Gene Reference for Forensic Entomology: Genomic and Developmental Transcriptomic Analysis of Aldrichina grahami (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

Many flies of Diptera are common entomological evidence employed in forensic investigation. Exploring the existence of inter- and intra-species genomic differences of forensically relevant insects is of great importance. Aldrichina grahami is a common blow fly species of forensic importance. The present study characterized the gene repertoires of A. grahami, and provides insights into issues related to forensic entomology, such as necrophagous behavior, gene family features, and developmental patterns. Gene families were clustered and classified according to their function in different aspects of the necrophagous lifestyle, generating several gene repertoires. The genes under positive selection pressure and evolutionary changes were screen and identified. Moreover, genes that exhibited potential prediction value in the post mortem interval (PMI) estimation and development of immature stages were subjected to analysis based on the developmental transcriptome. Related insect species were compared at the genomic level to reveal the genes associated with necrophagous behaviors. The expression of selected genes in separated repositories was verified using qPCR. This work was conducted using a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly of A. grahami and its developmental transcriptome. The findings will facilitate future research on A. grahami and the other forensically important species.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Neomyia cornicina (Diptera: Muscidae)

Neomyia cornicina (Fabricius, 1781) (Diptera: Muscidae) is considered to be an important dung-degrading species in Japan. In this study, we report the first mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of N. cornicina. The complete mitogenome of N. cornicina was 17,254 bp in length (GenBank accession No. MW592695), containing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and a non-coding AT-rich region. Its nucleotide composition was A (41.0%), G (8.4%), C (11.8%), and T (38.8%). Phylogenetic analysis indicated that N. cornicina is closely related to the species of Eudasyphora canadiana. This mitogenome contributes useful information for further understanding of the phylogenetic relationship and species identification within Muscidae species.

Experimental observation of three-dimensional non-paraxial accelerating beams

We experimentally realize three-dimensional non-paraxial accelerating beams associated with different coordinate systems. They are obtained by Fourier transforming a phase-modulated wave front in an aberration-compensated system. The phase pattern is encoded to include the phase and amplitude modulation for the accelerating beams with additional correction phase for the aberration compensation. These beams propagate along a circular trajectory, but they exhibit rather complex intensity patterns corresponding to the shape-invariant solutions in parabolic, prolate spheroidal and oblate spheroidal coordinate systems.

[Experimental studies on hyperthermic distilled water combining with saline and dextran for preventing intraperitoneal cancer recurrence due to neoplasm seeding]

In order to know the efficacy of hyperthermic distilled water combining with saline and dextran (DSD) to prevent intraperitoneal cancer from recurrence due to neoplasm seeding, we carried out the experimental studies, including an observation on inhibiting cancer cells from implantation in vivo by abdominal cavity lavation, cytotoxic test and attachment test in vitro. The results of the tests in vitro showed no viable tumor cell exposed to 45 degrees C distilled water for 20 minutes in the tissue culture wells, meanwhile, dextran-40 partially blocked attachment of B16-F10 cells to gelatinized wells. In vivo test, DSD effectively prevented neoplasm seeding of B16-F10 viable melanoma cells in C57BL/6j mouse abdominal cavity and had no obvious toxicity. The efficiency was 70%; when cisplatin was added, the efficiency was enhanced to 88.9% with slight toxicity. These data indicate that the local application of hyperthermic distilled water combined with saline and DSD may prevent intraperitoneal neoplasm from recurring.

[Management of hepatic trauma in 267 cases]

Two hundred and sixty-seven consecutive hepatic trauma in recent 17 years were analysed. They were classified by AAST classification: grade I and II 68 cases (25.4%), grade III 132 cases (49.44%), grade IV 52 cases (19.48%) and grade V 15 cases (5.6%) and 237 cases were operated in different procedures according to the severity of the trauma. More than ten modalities such as dedridement, suturing, repairment, abdominal drainage, billiary drainage, hepatic artery ligation, packing and pressing hemostasis, resection of traumatic parecchyma, vessel ligation with suturing in section etc were used, The morbidity and mortality were 20.6% and 8.9%, respectively. The other 24 cases were found no active bleeding during laporatomy and rehabitated with preservative management. The authors believe that effective management on time and intensive perioperative care are important to minimize the morbidity and mortality of hepatic trauma. Nonoperative management deserves enough attention.

Obstructive jaundice caused by tumor emboli from hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presenting as obstructive jaundice due to intrabile duct tumor growth is being reported with increasing frequency. We describe our clinical experiences and evaluate the results of different operative procedures for this disease. A retrospective study was undertaken to review 18 patients with obstructive jaundice by tumor emboli from HCC during a 15-year period of time. We reviewed clinical features, types of operative procedures, operative findings, and survival in the patients. All patients on initial examination had recurrent episodic jaundice or cholangitis. Types of surgical procedures were choledochotomy with T-tube drainage alone in nine patients, choledochotomy with T-tube drainage followed by hepatectomy in six, and T-tube drainage followed by transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization in the remaining three patients. Liver cirrhosis was the associated disease in 15 (83.3%). There were three postoperative deaths (16.7%). The mean survival time for nine patients with external drainage alone was 4.5 months. For the three patients with T-tube drainage and transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization, mean survival time was 11 months. Six patients who had undergone hepatectomy had a better postoperative survival time, with 1 surviving for more than 3 years and another alive for 70 months, without evidence of recurrence at the moment. Jaundice is not necessarily a harbinger of advanced disease and a contraindication for surgery. Managed properly, these patients will have satisfactory palliation and occasional cure.

[Surgical handling of primary hepatic carcinoma with severe cirrhosis and portal hypertension]

Four hundred and ninety eight cases of primary hepatic carcinoma (PHC) were discovered complicating with cirrhosis in 608 PHC cases during 1974-1994. 63 cases of them were with severe cirrhosis and portal hypertension (10.4%). Laparotomy indication was evaluated according to Child's grade and image data such as BUS and CT etc. Operative extension should be limited as segment or wedge hepatectomy or semi-hepatic artery chemo-embolization. Splenic artery ligation plus venous ligalion of cardiac region of stomach were applied to portal hypertension and hypersplenism. Frusemide, antacid and insulin were used in the perioperation period. Three-year survival rate was 57%. It is considered that splenic artery ligation instead of splenectomy is the first choice for preventing and treating hypersplenism and digestive tract bleeding in PHC with severe cirrhosis.

Serological survey of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in 21 cities of south China

This paper reports the results of serological survey of 318,912 persons for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in 21 cities and counties of south China. There were 8,441 persons with positive VCA-IgA antibody (single item positive) of EB virus (EBV), with a rate of 2.65%. In these VCA-IgA positive persons, 287 persons also had positive EA-IgA (double items positive) of EBV. The overall positive rate was 0.09%. 100 cases of NPC were found and 87 of them (87.0%) were in early stage. NPC found in the group with single item positive accounts for 1.19%, but the rate in the group with double items positive was 19.16% (55 cases). In NPC patients with double items positive, 49 cases were in early stage (89.1%). In 100 cases of NPC found, 45 cases appeared with negative EA-IgA, only with positive VCA-IgA, which indicated that for diagnosis of NPC, sensitivity of EA-IgA was lower than that of VCA-IgA, but its specificity was higher. Therefore, both can increase the detecting rate and early diagnosis rate of NPC. The age of people checked varied with different antibody positive rate and NPC detecting rate. The three items showed a positive correlation. The results are compatible with those of the prospective study for NPC in Wuzhou City, Guangxi, China. The method for NPC serological diagnosis can be extended and applied to raise the NPC detecting rate and early diagnosis rate at secondary prevention. And, it is further proved that there is a close relationship between NPC and EBV.
