Characterization of tau propagation pattern and cascading hypometabolism from functional connectivity in Alzheimer's disease

Tau pathology and its spatial propagation in Alzheimer's disease (AD) play crucial roles in the neurodegenerative cascade leading to dementia. However, the underlying mechanisms linking tau spreading to glucose metabolism remain elusive. To address this, we aimed to examine the association between pathologic tau aggregation, functional connectivity, and cascading glucose metabolism and further explore the underlying interplay mechanisms. In this prospective cohort study, we enrolled 79 participants with 18F-Florzolotau positron emission tomography (PET), 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET, resting-state functional, and anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images in the hospital-based Shanghai Memory Study. We employed generalized linear regression and correlation analyses to assess the associations between Florzolotau accumulation, functional connectivity, and glucose metabolism in whole-brain and network-specific manners. Causal mediation analysis was used to evaluate whether functional connectivity mediates the association between pathologic tau and cascading glucose metabolism. We examined 22 normal controls and 57 patients with AD. In the AD group, functional connectivity was associated with Florzolotau covariance (β = .837, r = 0.472, p < .001) and glucose covariance (β = 1.01, r = 0.499, p < .001). Brain regions with higher tau accumulation tend to be connected to other regions with high tau accumulation through functional connectivity or metabolic connectivity. Mediation analyses further suggest that functional connectivity partially modulates the influence of tau accumulation on downstream glucose metabolism (mediation proportion: 49.9%). Pathologic tau may affect functionally connected neurons directly, triggering downstream glucose metabolism changes. This study sheds light on the intricate relationship between tau pathology, functional connectivity, and downstream glucose metabolism, providing critical insights into AD pathophysiology and potential therapeutic targets.

A MOF@Metal Oxide Heterostructure Induced by Post-Synthetic Gamma-Ray Irradiation for Catalytic Reduction

Metal-organic framework (MOF) based heterostructures, which exhibit enhanced or unexpected functionality and properties due to synergistic effects, are typically synthesized using post-synthetic strategies. However, several reported post-synthetic strategies remain unsatisfactory, considering issues such as damage to the crystallinity of MOFs, presence of impure phases, and high time and energy consumption. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a novel route for constructing MOF based heterostructures using radiation-induced post-synthesis, highlighting the merits of convenience, ambient conditions, large-scale production, and notable time and energy saving. Specifically, a new HKUST-1@Cu2O heterostructure was successfully synthesized by simply irradiating a methanol solution dispersed of HKUST-1 with gamma ray under ambient conditions. The copper source of Cu2O was directly derived from in situ radiation etching and reduction of the parent HKUST-1, without the use of any additional copper reagents. Significantly, the resulting HKUST-1@Cu2O heterostructure exhibits remarkable catalytic performance, with a catalytic rate constant nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of the parent HKUST-1.

Independent Multiple-Atom-Site Functionality in Composition Adjustable Immiscible Ru-Rh-Pd-Pt Solid-Solution High-Entropy Alloys for NOx Reduction Outperforming Rh

The high-entropy-alloy (HEA) nanoparticles with four, five or more metals significantly can yield the developments of functional materials with excellent performances in various reactions. However, the underlying reaction mechanisms of heterogeneous catalysis for HEA have been rarely investigated, due to their diverse elements and complex compositions. In this study, we successfully synthesized the homogeneously dispersed Ru-Rh-Pd-Pt HEA with adjustable compositions, as the multiple-atom-site catalysts (MASC). In the NOx reduction performance tests, Ru0.4 (Rh0.33Pd0.33Pt0.33)0.6 MASC showed the highest activity, which was significantly improved compared to that of the best monometal Rh, with the light-off temperature decreasing by ca. 50 °C. The Fourier transform infrared measurements revealed that the outstanding activity of Ru-Rh-Pd-Pt MASC was attributable to the well-coupled elementary steps of the CO adsorption, NO adsorption, NO dissociation and O spillover on the Ru, Rh, Rh-Pd and Pt sites, respectively, which explained the first clear reaction mechanism in heterogeneous catalysis for HEA.

Maximizing Interlaminar Fracture Toughness in Bidirectional GFRP through Controlled CNT Heterogeneous Toughening

"Interleaving" is widely used for interlaminar toughening of fiber-reinforced composites, and the structure of interleaving is one of the important factors affecting the toughening efficiency of laminates. Several experiments have demonstrated that compared to continuous and dense structures, toughening layers with structural heterogeneity can trigger multiple toughening mechanisms and have better toughening effects. On this basis, this work further investigates the application of heterogeneous toughening phases in interlaminar toughening of bidirectional GFRP. CNT was selected to construct toughening phases, which was introduced into the interlaminar of composites through efficient spraying methods. By controlling the amount of CNT, various structures of CNT toughening layers were obtained. The fracture toughness of modified laminates was tested, and their toughening mechanism was analyzed based on fracture surface observation. The results indicate that the optimal CNT usage (0.5 gsm) can increase the initial and extended values of interlayer fracture toughness by 136.0% and 82.0%, respectively. The solvent acetone sprayed with CNT can dissolve and re-precipitate a portion of the sizing agent on the surface of the fibers, which improves the bonding of the fibers to the resin. More importantly, larger discrete particles are formed between the layers, guiding the cracks to deflect in the orientation of the toughened layer. This generates additional energy dissipation and ultimately presents an optimal toughening effect.

One-year trajectories of nutritional status in perimenopausal women: a community-based multi-centered prospective study

BACKGROUND

Nutritional status is a modifiable factor associated with perimenopausal women's health and quality of life. Assessing body composition indicators helps to comprehensively understand nutritional status compared with using body mass index (BMI) only. However, few published studies measured the trends in body composition among perimenopausal women.

OBJECTIVES

To assess the one-year trajectory of the nutritional status of perimenopausal women and to explore its influential factors.

METHODS

A community-based observational study with 3-wave repeated measurements at 6-month intervals was carried out. The nutritional status indicators include weight, body mass index (BMI), and body composition variables. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to assess body composition. Repeated measures ANOVA and Chi-square test were used to calculate the changes in nutritional status and generalized estimating equations were performed to explore their influential factors.

RESULTS

2760 participants completed the study. Increasing trajectories in weight (from 56.05 ± 7.55 to 57.02 ± 7.60), fat mass (from 17.99 ± 4.80 to 20.49 ± 4.90), and waist-hip ratio (from 0.86 ± 0.04 to 0.91 ± 0.15) were found (P < 0.001). Decreasing trajectories in skeletal muscle (from 20.30 ± 2.38 to 19.19 ± 2.46), protein level (from 7.39 ± 0.79 to 7.06 ± 0.81), and total body water (from 27.87 ± 2.92 to 27.00 ± 3.01) were found (P < 0.001). Being married/unmarried with a partner and without negative life events were associated with higher total body water, skeletal muscle, and protein level, while negatively associated with fat mass and waist-hip ratio. Age was positively associated with fat mass (P < 0.001). Participants with junior high school education were prone to increased fat mass (P = 0.018) compared with those holding primary school education and below. A per capita monthly income of 1500 to 3000 Yuan was associated with higher total body water, skeletal muscle, and protein level (P < 0.001) compared with a per capita monthly income of less than 1500 Yuan.

CONCLUSION

Worsening nutritional status exists in perimenopausal women, which is characterized by increased weight, fat mass, and waist-hip ratio, and decreased skeletal muscle, total body water, and protein level. For greater efficiency, precision nutritional interventions are needed, and recipients should be classified into different risk levels based on their sociodemographic background.

Autoinducer-2 promotes the colonization of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG to improve the intestinal barrier function in a neonatal mouse model of antibiotic-induced intestinal dysbiosis

BACKGROUND

Human health is seriously threatened by antibiotic-induced intestinal disorders. Herein, we aimed to determine the effects of Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) combined with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) on the intestinal barrier function of antibiotic-induced intestinal dysbiosis neonatal mice.

METHODS

An antibiotic-induced intestinal dysbiosis neonatal mouse model was created using antibiotic cocktails, and the model mice were randomized into the control, AI-2, LGG, and LGG + AI-2 groups. Intestinal short-chain fatty acids and AI-2 concentrations were detected by mass spectrometry and chemiluminescence, respectively. The community composition of the gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rDNA sequencing, and biofilm thickness and bacterial adhesion in the colon were assessed using scanning electron microscopy. Transcriptome RNA sequencing of intestinal tissues was performed, and the mRNA and protein levels of HCAR2 (hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2), claudin3, and claudin4 in intestinal tissues were determined using quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR and western blotting. The levels of inflammatory factors in intestinal tissues were evaluated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). D-ribose, an inhibitor of AI-2, was used to treat Caco-2 cells in vitro.

RESULTS

Compared with the control, AI-2, and LGG groups, the LGG + AI-2 group showed increased levels of intestinal AI-2 and proportions of Firmicutes and Lacticaseibacillus, but a reduced fraction of Proteobacteria. Specifically, the LGG + AI-2 group had considerably more biofilms and LGG on the colon surface than those of other three groups. Meanwhile, the combination of AI-2 and LGG markedly increased the concentration of butyric acid and promoted Hcar2, claudin3 and claudin4 expression levels compared with supplementation with LGG or AI-2 alone. The ELISAs revealed a significantly higher tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) level in the control group than in the LGG and LGG + AI-2 groups, whereas the interleukin 10 (IL-10) level was significantly higher in the LGG + AI-2 group than in the other three groups. In vitro, D-ribose treatment dramatically suppressed the increased levels of Hcar2, claudin3, and claudin4 in Caco-2 cells induced by AI-2 + LGG.

CONCLUSIONS

AI-2 promotes the colonization of LGG and biofilm formation to improve intestinal barrier function in an antibiotic-induced intestinal dysbiosis neonatal mouse model.

Design, Synthesis, Antifungal Evaluation, Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) Study, and Molecular Docking of Novel Spirotryprostatin A Derivatives

Phytopathogenic fungi cause plant diseases and economic losses in agriculture. To efficiently control plant pathogen infections, a total of 19 spirotryprostatin A derivatives and 26 spirooxindole derivatives were designed, synthesized, and tested for their antifungal activity against ten plant pathogens. Additionally, the intermediates of spirooxindole derivatives were investigated, including proposing a mechanism for diastereoselectivity and performing amplification experiments. The bioassay results demonstrated that spirotryprostatin A derivatives possess good and broad-spectrum antifungal activities. Compound 4d exhibited excellent antifungal activity in vitro, equal to or higher than the positive control ketoconazole, against Helminthosporium maydis, Trichothecium roseum, Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium graminearum, Alternaria brassicae, Alternaria alternate, and Fusarium solan (MICs: 8-32 µg/mL). Compound 4k also displayed remarkable antifungal activity against eight other phytopathogenic fungi, including Fusarium oxysporium f. sp. niveum and Mycosphaerella melonis (MICs: 8-32 µg/mL). The preliminary structure-activity relationships (SARs) were further discussed. Moreover, molecular docking studies revealed that spirotryprostatin A derivatives anchored in the binding site of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). Therefore, these compounds showed potential as natural compound-based chiral fungicides and hold promise as candidates for further enhancements in terms of structure and properties.

Moderate static magnetic field promotes fracture healing and regulates iron metabolism in mice

BACKGROUND

Fractures are the most common orthopedic diseases. It is known that static magnetic fields (SMFs) can contribute to the maintenance of bone health. However, the effect and mechanism of SMFs on fracture is still unclear. This study is aim to investigate the effect of moderate static magnetic fields (MMFs) on bone structure and metabolism during fracture healing.

METHODS

Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a unilateral open transverse tibial fracture, and following treatment under geomagnetic field (GMF) or MMF. The micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) and three-point bending were employed to evaluate the microarchitecture and mechanical properties. Endochondral ossification and bone remodeling were evaluated by bone histomorphometric and serum biochemical assay. In addition, the atomic absorption spectroscopy and ELISA were utilized to examine the influence of MMF exposure on iron metabolism in mice.

RESULTS

MMF exposure increased bone mineral density (BMD), bone volume per tissue volume (BV/TV), mechanical properties, and proportion of mineralized bone matrix of the callus during fracture healing. MMF exposure reduced the proportion of cartilage in the callus area during fracture healing. Meanwhile, MMF exposure increased the number of osteoblasts in callus on the 14th day, and reduced the number of osteoclasts on the 28th day of fracture healing. Furthermore, MMF exposure increased PINP and OCN levels, and reduced the TRAP-5b and β-CTX levels in serum. It was also observed that MMF exposure reduced the iron content in the liver and callus, as well as serum ferritin levels while elevating the serum hepcidin concentration.

CONCLUSIONS

MMF exposure could accelerate fracture healing via promote the endochondral ossification and bone formation while regulating systemic iron metabolism during fracture healing. This study suggests that MMF may have the potential to become a form of physical therapy for fractures.

Exploring the Release of Elastin Peptides Generated from Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Bovine Elastin via Peptide Mapping

To enhance the understanding of enzymatic hydrolysis and to accelerate the discovery of key bioactive peptides within enzymatic products, this research focused on elastin as the substrate and investigated the variations in peptide profiles and the production of key bioactive peptides (those exceeding 5% of the total) and their impacts on the biological activity of the hydrolysates. Through the application of advanced analytical techniques, such as stop-flow two-dimensional liquid chromatography and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, the research tracks the release and profiles of peptides within elastin hydrolysates (EHs). Despite uniform peptide compositions, significant disparities in peptide concentrations were detected across the hydrolysates, hinting at varying levels of bioactive efficacy. A comprehensive identification process pinpointed 403 peptides within the EHs, with 18 peptides surpassing 5% in theoretical maximum content, signaling their crucial role in the hydrolysate's bioactivity. Of particular interest, certain peptides containing sequences of alanine, valine, and glycine were released in higher quantities, suggesting Alcalase® 2.4L's preference for these residues. The analysis not only confirms the peptides' dose-responsive elastase inhibitory potential but also underscores the nuanced interplay between peptide content, biological function, and their collective synergy. The study sets the stage for future research aimed at refining enzymatic treatments to fully exploit the bioactive properties of elastin.

Anisotropy in the Liquefaction Resistance of Fibre Reinforced Sand

Adding discrete fibres to sand has been seen as a feasible technique to improve sand's strength as well as liquefaction resistance. Considering the anisotropic distribution of fibre orientations, the anisotropy in the liquefaction resistance of the reinforced sand is also introduced using fibres. Here, the triaxial compression and extension test results of unreinforced and fibre-reinforced sand in different density states are provided, from which the anisotropy in the liquefaction resistance of fibre-reinforced sand is demonstrated. Fibre reinforcement improves the liquefaction resistance of sand by introducing both the densifying effect and the confining effect. The inclusion of fibres increases both the slope and the intercept of the strength envelope in comparison with the unreinforced sand under triaxial compression, while the strength envelope is not affected by fibres under triaxial extension. Stress contribution of fibres makes the ESP of the composite under undrained loading reverse its direction to develop even though the phase transformation is absent. The stress ratio initiating the ESP reversal is irrespective of the fibre content but dependent on the density state under triaxial compression. Under triaxial extension, the stress ratio initiating the ESP reversal remains the same in the samples with varied density states and fibre contents. The mechanism correlating to the strength envelope and ESP reversal of the fibre-reinforced sand was demonstrated following a rule of mixture based constitutive modelling framework. By introducing an alternatively defined pore pressure ratio that incorporates the stress contribution of fibres, the liquefaction state of the fibre reinforced sand is reasonably assessed. Liquefaction remains absent in the sand once the fibres are mixed. The anisotropy in the liquefaction resistance of fibre-reinforced sand arises, as the predominant role played by the fibres to suppress the liquefaction is different when varied loading paths are involved, which is sourced from the anisotropic distribution of fibre orientations.

An Infrared Small Target Detection Method Based on Attention Mechanism

The human visual attention system plays an important role in infrared target recognition because it can quickly and accurately recognize infrared small targets and has good scene adaptability. This paper proposes an infrared small target detection method based on an attention mechanism, which consists of three modules: a bottom-up passive attention module, a top-down active attention module, and decision feedback equalization. In the top-down active attention module, given the Gaussian characteristics of infrared small targets, the idea of combining knowledge-experience Gaussian shape features is applied to implement feature extraction, and quaternion cosine transform is performed to achieve multi-dimensional fusion of Gaussian shape features, thereby achieving complementary fusion of multi-dimensional feature information. In the bottom-up passive attention module, considering that the difference in contrast and motion between the target and the background can attract attention easily, an optimal fast local contrast algorithm and improved circular pipeline filtering are adopted to find candidate target regions. Meanwhile, the multi-scale Laplacian of the Gaussian filter is adopted to estimate the optimal size of the infrared small target. The fast local contrast algorithm based on box filter acceleration and structure optimization is employed to extract local contrast features, and candidate target regions can be obtained by using an adaptive threshold. Besides, the mean gray, target size, Gaussian consistency, and circular region constraint are used in pipeline filtering to extract motion regions, and the false-alarm rate is reduced effectively. Finally, decision feedback equalization is adopted to obtain real targets. Experiments are conducted on some real infrared images involving complex backgrounds with sea, sky, and ground clutters, and the experimental results indicate that the proposed method can achieve better detection performance than conventional baseline methods, such as RLCM, ILCM, PQFT, MPCM, and ADMD. Also, mathematical proofs are provided to validate the proposed method.

Efferocytosis and Respiratory Disease

Cells are the smallest units that make up living organisms, which constantly undergo the processes of proliferation, differentiation, senescence and death. Dead cells need to be removed in time to maintain the homeostasis of the organism and keep it healthy. This process is called efferocytosis. If the process fails, this may cause different types of diseases. More and more evidence suggests that a faulty efferocytosis process is closely related to the pathological processes of respiratory diseases. In this review, we will first introduce the process and the related mechanisms of efferocytosis of the macrophage. Secondly, we will propose some methods that can regulate the function of efferocytosis at different stages of the process. Next, we will discuss the role of efferocytosis in different lung diseases and the related treatment approaches. Finally, we will summarize the drugs that have been applied in clinical practice that can act upon efferocytosis, in order to provide new ideas for the treatment of lung diseases.

Poly(ionic liquid)/OPBI Composite Membrane with Excellent Chemical Stability for High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane

Despite the outstanding proton conductivity of phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes as high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs), chemical stability is a critical issue for the operation life of PEM fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, we introduced polymerized [HVIM]H2PO4 ionic liquids (PIL) into an OPBI membrane to accelerate proton transfer and enhance the chemical stability of the membrane. Based on the regulation of the intrinsic viscosity of PIL, the entanglement between PIL chains and OPBI chains is enhanced to prevent the loss of PIL and the oxidative degradation of membrane materials. The PIL/OPBI membrane with the intrinsic viscosity of 2.34 dL·g-1 (2.34-PIL/OPBI) exhibited the highest proton conductivity of 113.9 mS·cm-1 at 180 °C, which is 3.5 times that of the original OPBI membrane. The 2.34-PIL/OPBI membrane exhibited the highest remaining weight of 92.1% under harsh conditions (3 wt% H2O2; 4 ppm Fe2+ at 80 °C) for 96 h, and a much lower attenuation amplitude than the OPBI did in mechanical strength and proton conductivity performance. Our present work demonstrates a simple and effective method for blending PIL with OPBI to enhance the chemical durability of the PA-PBI membranes as HT-PEMs.

Haplotype-Resolution Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Important Responsive Gene Modules and Allele-Specific Expression Contributions under Continuous Salt and Drought in Camellia sinensis

The tea plant, Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze, is one of the most important beverage crops with significant economic and cultural value. Global climate change and population growth have led to increased salt and drought stress, negatively affecting tea yield and quality. The response mechanism of tea plants to these stresses remains poorly understood due to the lack of reference genome-based transcriptional descriptions. This study presents a high-quality genome-based transcriptome dynamic analysis of C. sinensis' response to salt and drought stress. A total of 2244 upregulated and 2164 downregulated genes were identified under salt and drought stress compared to the control sample. Most of the differentially expression genes (DEGs) were found to involve divergent regulation processes at different time points under stress. Some shared up- and downregulated DEGs related to secondary metabolic and photosynthetic processes, respectively. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed six co-expression modules significantly positively correlated with C. sinensis' response to salt or drought stress. The MEpurple module indicated crosstalk between the two stresses related to ubiquitination and the phenylpropanoid metabolic regulation process. We identified 1969 salt-responsive and 1887 drought-responsive allele-specific expression (ASE) genes in C. sinensis. Further comparison between these ASE genes and tea plant heterosis-related genes suggests that heterosis likely contributes to the adversity and stress resistance of C. sinensis. This work offers new insight into the underlying mechanisms of C. sinensis' response to salt and drought stress and supports the improved breeding of tea plants with enhanced salt and drought tolerance.

Optogenetic stimulation of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons prevents neuroinflammation and neuropsychiatric manifestations in pristane induced lupus mice

BACKGROUND

Neuroinflammation has been identified as one of the primary pathogenic factors of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). However, there are no dedicated treatments available in clinics to alleviate neuroinflammation in NPSLE. It has been proposed that stimulating basal forebrain (BF) cholinergic neurons may provide potent anti-inflammatory effects in several inflammatory diseases, but its potential role in NPSLE remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate whether and how stimulating BF cholinergic neurons has a protective effect on NPSLE.

RESULTS

Optogenetic stimulation of BF cholinergic neurons significantly ameliorated olfactory dysfunction and anxiety- and depression-like phenotype in pristane induced lupus (PIL) mice. The increased expression of adhesion molecules (P-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1)), leukocyte recruitment, blood-brain barrier (BBB) leakage were significantly decreased. Notably, the brain histopathological changes, including the elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β), IgG deposition in the choroid plexus and lateral ventricle wall and lipofuscin accumulation in the cortical and hippocampal neurons, were also significantly attenuated. Furthermore, we confirmed the colocalization between the BF cholinergic projections and the cerebral vessels, and the expression of α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) on the cerebral vessels.

CONCLUSION

Our data indicate that stimulation of BF cholinergic neurons could play a neuroprotective role in the brain through its cholinergic anti-inflammatory effects on cerebral vessels. Therefore, this may be a promising preventive target for NPSLE.

Effect of treatments on skin microbiota in patients with atopic dermatitis: a protocol for systematic review

INTRODUCTION

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease and skin microbiota dysbiosis shows an important role in the pathogenesis of AD. Effects of treatment on skin microbiota for patients with AD have been evaluated in recent years; however, the results remained controversial across studies. This systematic review will summarise studies evaluating the effect of treatments on skin microbiota among patients with AD.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

We will search PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov and Chinese Clinical Trial Registry in November 2021; other data sources will also be considered, including searching specific authors and screening references cited in the enrolled articles. Interventional studies, which enrolled patients with AD receiving treatments and reported treatment-related skin microbiota changes, will be included. Our primary outcomes include skin microbiota diversity and treatment-related differential microbes; the secondary outcomes include microbiota functions and microbial interactions. Risk of bias assessment will be performed using Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised trials, risk of bias in non-randomised studies of interventions and methodological index for non-randomised studies. Two researchers will independently perform study selection, data extraction and risk of bias assessment, with disagreements resolved by group discussions. Subgroup analyses will be performed according to different types of treatment for AD.

Ethics approval is not required for this systematic review. Findings will be disseminated via peer-reviewed publication or conference proceedings.

Design and Application of Near-Infrared Nanomaterial-Liposome Hybrid Nanocarriers for Cancer Photothermal Therapy

Liposomes are attractive carriers for targeted and controlled drug delivery receiving increasing attention in cancer photothermal therapy. However, the field of creating near-infrared nanomaterial-liposome hybrid nanocarriers (NIRN-Lips) is relatively little understood. The hybrid nanocarriers combine the dual superiority of nanomaterials and liposomes, with more stable particles, enhanced photoluminescence, higher tumor permeability, better tumor-targeted drug delivery, stimulus-responsive drug release, and thus exhibiting better anti-tumor efficacy. Herein, this review covers the liposomes supported various types of near-infrared nanomaterials, including gold-based nanomaterials, carbon-based nanomaterials, and semiconductor quantum dots. Specifically, the NIRN-Lips are described in terms of their feature, synthesis, and drug-release mechanism. The design considerations of NIRN-Lips are highlighted. Further, we briefly introduced the photothermal conversion mechanism of NIRNs and the cell death mechanism induced by photothermal therapy. Subsequently, we provided a brief conclusion of NIRNs-Lips applied in cancer photothermal therapy. Finally, we discussed a synopsis of associated challenges and future perspectives for the applications of NIRN-Lips in cancer photothermal therapy.
