Uptake of technetium-99 by food crops under field conditions

Long-term field experiments have been carried out in the Chornobyl Exclusion zone to determine parameters describing technetium (99Tc) transfer into five food plants (Lettuce, Radish, Wheat, Bean, and Potato) from four types of soil, namely Podzoluvisol, Greyzem, Phaeozem, and Chernozem. Technetium was added to the soils under field conditions in a pertechnetate form. In the first two years, soil type had little effect on Tc uptake by plants. In the first and second years after contamination, the concentration ratios (CR), defined as 99Tc activity concentration in the crop (dry weight) divided by that in the soil (dry weight), for radish roots and lettuce leaves ranged from 60 to 210. For potato tubers, the CR was d 0.4-2.3, i.e., two orders of magnitude lower than for radish and lettuce, and for summer wheat grain it was lower at 0.6 ± 0.1. After 8-9 years, root uptake of 99Tc by wheat decreased by 3-7 fold (CR from 0.016 ± 0.005 to 0.12 ± 0.034) and only 13-22 % of the total 99Tc added remained in the upper 20 cm soil layers. The time taken for half of the added 99Tc to be removed from the 20-cm arable soil layer due to vertical migration and transfer to plants was short at c. 2-3 years.

Ultrafast and selective capture of 99TcO4-/ReO4- from wastewater by hyper-branched quaternary ammonium group-functionalized resin

99Tc primarily exists high mobility in the natural aqueous environment due to its extremely high solubility and non-complexing features, which can easily cause radioactive pollution. We herein report a general strategy for constructing a novel resin (SiPAN-PEI) with multiple positive charges nitrogen, exhibiting ultrafast adsorption kinetics (< 3 min), superior adsorption capacities (463.96 mg g-1), and excellent selectivity in the presence of excess competitive anions, which exceed those of most commercial resins. Moreover, based on impressive structure stability in extreme conditions, SiPAN-PEI can still maintain superior adsorption abilities after suffering irradiation, calcination, and immersion in strong acid. In addition, the separation performance kept excellently after five loading-washing-eluting cycles and the total adsorption ratio can still reach 97 %. Outstandingly, SiPAN-PEI can remove most of ReO4- from simulated nuclear wastewater through a sequential injection automatic separation system and can reduce the concentration of ReO4- to the maximum concentration standard set by the World Health Organization (WHO) in a short time. Leveraging density functional theory calculations and other characteristics clearly elucidated adsorption mechanism of anion-exchange between Cl- and TcO4-/ReO4-. In terms of superior adsorption property, SiPAN-PEI is demonstrated to be a pretty candidate for 99Tc elimination from wastewater.

Removal of radionuclide 99Tc from aqueous solution by various adsorbents: A review

Technetium isotope 99Tc is a main radioactive waste produced in the process of nuclear reaction, which has the characteristics of long half-life and strong environmental mobility, and can be bio-accumulated in organisms, resulting in serious threat to human health and ecosystem. Adsorption method is widely used in the field of removing radionuclides from water due to the advantages of high treatment rate, simple and mature industrial application. In this review paper, the recent advances in research and application of various adsorption materials for 99Tc pollution treatment were summarized and analyzed for the first time, including inorganic adsorbents, such as activated carbon, zero-valent iron, metallic minerals, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), tin-based materials, and sulfur-based materials; organic adsorbents, such as porous organic polymers (POPs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and ion exchange resin; and biological adsorbents, such as biopolymers (chitosan, cellulose, alginate), and microbial cells. The performance characteristics and the adsorption kinetics and isotherms of various adsorption materials were discussed. This review could deepen the understanding of the adsorptive removal of 99Tc from aqueous solution, and provide a reference for the future research in this field.

Tracing Atlantic water transit time in the subarctic and Arctic Atlantic using 99Tc-233U-236U

The pathway and transport time of Atlantic water passing northern Europe can be traced via anthropogenic radioisotopes released from reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels at Sellafield (SF) and La Hague (LH). These reprocessing derived radioisotopes, with extremely low natural background, are source specific and unique fingerprints for Atlantic water. This study explores a new approach using ⁹⁹Tc-²³³U-²³⁶U tracer to estimate the transit time of Atlantic water in the coast of Greenland. We isolate the reprocessing plants (RP) signal of ²³⁶U (²³⁶U_RP) by incorporating ²³³U measurements and combine this with ⁹⁹Tc which solely originates from RP, to estimate the transit time of Atlantic water circulating from Sellafield to the coast of Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Islands. Both being conservative radioisotopes, the temporal variation of ⁹⁹Tc/²³⁶U_RP ratio in Atlantic water is only influenced by their historic discharges from RP, thus ⁹⁹Tc/²³⁶U_RP can potentially be a robust tracer to track the transport of Atlantic water in the North Atlantic-Arctic region. Based on our observation data of ⁹⁹Tc-²³³U-²³⁶U in seawater and the proposed ⁹⁹Tc/²³⁶U_RP tracer approach, Atlantic water transit times were estimated to be 16-22, 25 and 25 years in the coast of Greenland, Iceland and Faroe Island, respectively. Our estimates from northeast Greenland coastal waters agree with earlier results (17-22 years). Therefore, this work provides an independent approach to estimate Atlantic water transit time with which to compare estimates from ocean modelling and other radiotracer approaches.

Aminomethylpyridine isomers functionalized cellulose microspheres for TcO4-/ReO4- uptake: Structure-properties relationship and their application in different aquatic systems

Technetium-99 (⁹⁹Tc) is a long-lived radioactive nuclide that poses great threat to environment, hence selective removal of ⁹⁹Tc from aquatic system is always an issue. Aminomethylpyridine (AMP) equipped with pyridine and amino, is a promising receptor for TcO₄^- and its surrogate ReO₄^-, thus it is of interest to explore and understand the structure-properties relationship of ReO₄^- adsorption related to n-AMP structure that differ in amino methyl position. In this work, three n-AMP functionalized cellulose microspheres (n-AMPR, n = 2, 3, 4) were synthesized and employed for TcO₄^-/ReO₄^- uptake. The effect of aminomethyl position on adsorption properties of n-AMPR for ReO₄^- were investigated and compared. Adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm showed that adsorption speed and adsorption capacity were in order of 3-AMPR > 2-AMPR > 4-AMPR. DFT calculation verified that the adsorption of ReO₄^- by n-AMPR was attributed to electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding interaction, the order of adsorption abilities of n-AMPR was due to that steric effect and hydrogen bond collaborated in stabilizing n-AMPR-ReO₄^- complexes. The column experiments demonstrated that 3-AMPR can be selectively remove ReO₄^- from simulated groundwater. More importantly, ⁹⁹Tc column experiments showed that 3-AMPR had a better ability for actual radioactive TcO₄^-.

A 40-year marine record of 137Cs and 99Tc transported into the Danish Straits: Significance for oceanic tracer studies

This work reports comprehensive time-series datasets for 137Cs and 99Tc in marine samples from the Danish Straits over the past 40 years, where dynamic inputs from the two European nuclear reprocessing plants Sellafield (SF) and La Hague (LH) and Chernobyl accident are clearly archived. Distinct seasonal variations between 137Cs and 99Tc are observed in Fucus vesiculosus (F. vesiculosus), which needs to be taken into account when using F. vesiculosus as a bio-monitor to represent the concentration of radionuclides in seawater. Comparable transfer factor (TF) for 99Tc from SF to Kattegat between our calculation and earlier studies indicates a relatively steady water mass transport over the past decades. Three distinct events are observed in the temporal evolution of 99Tc/137Cs activity ratio in F. vesiculosu with the first event corresponding with the increased 99Tc discharge from SF, while the other two are very likely related to the major Baltic inflow (MBI) events. The correlation between the 99Tc/137Cs activity ratio and salinity fits well into the binary mixing line with the North Sea (NS) and the Baltic Sea (BS) as end members. A model simulation indicates that water mass from NS constitutes less than 50% in the surface water and 50-100% for most locations in the bottom water of the Danish Straits. Overall observations show that 137Cs and 99Tc in marine samples, especially 99Tc/137Cs isotope ratios, serve as useful oceanic tracers to study different natural processes, such as water mixing and transport dynamics.

A comparison study on the use of Dowex 1 and TEVA-resin in determination of 99Tc in environmental and nuclear coolant samples in a SIA system with ICP-MS detection

This work refers to a comparative study of sorbents widely used in determinations of ⁹⁹Tc such as TEVA resin and Dowex 1. Despite having a similar functional group of quaternary amines, both materials represent different chromatographic methods-extraction (TEVA resin) and anion exchange (Dowex 1)-which provides a diverse range of their properties significant in determination of ⁹⁹Tc in flow conditions. The comparative tests, carried out in a SIA-LOV (Sequential Injection Analysis-Lab-on-Valve) system combined with mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) detection, considered several factors that are crucial from the standpoint of resin´s utility such as sorption capacity, durability, or selectivity, critical in ⁹⁹Tc separation from interferences. The developed and optimized analytical procedure based on the application of the TEVA resin provided determinations of ⁹⁹Tc at minimum detectable limit (MDL) 6.00 mBq L^-1 in 50 min and has been successfully employed in analyses of samples from nuclear industrial and research units (reactor coolant and sewage) as well as from the river surrounding the nuclear reactor. The method proved to be sufficient for routine analysis of water samples in accordance with EPA standards. The reliability of the method was confirmed in the analysis of the BH standard provided by the NPL for inter-laboratory proficiency tests. The ⁹⁹Tc recovery for all real samples was evaluated as 80-100%.

A new plastic scintillation resin for single-step separation, concentration and measurement of technetium-99

Technetium is a synthetic element with no stable isotopes, produced as waste in nuclear power plants and in cyclotrons used for nuclear medicine. The element has high mobility, in the form of TcO4(-); its determination is therefore important for environmental protection. Technetium is found in low concentrations and therefore common methods for its analysis include long treatments in several steps and require large amounts of reagents for its purification and preconcentration. Plastic scintillation resins (PSresin) are novel materials used to separate, preconcentrate and measure radionuclides in a single step. The objective of this study is to prepare and characterise a PSresin for the preconcentration and measurement of (99)Tc. The study first evaluates the reproducibility of the production of PSresins between batches and over time; showing good reproducibility and storage stability. Next, we studied the effect of some common non-radioactive interferences, showing small influences on measurement, and radioactive interferences ((36)Cl and (238)U/(234)U). (36)Cl can be removed by a simple treatment with 0.5 M HCl and (238)U/(234)U can be removed from the column by cleaning with a mixture of 0.1 M HNO3 and 0.1 M HF. In the latter case, a slight change in the morphology of the PSresin caused an increase in detection efficiency. Finally, the PSresin was applied to the measurement of real spiked samples (sea water and urine) with deviations lower than 10% in all cases.

Automation of ⁹⁹Tc extraction by LOV prior ICP-MS detection: application to environmental samples

A new, fast, automated and inexpensive sample pre-treatment method for (99)Tc determination by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection is presented. The miniaturized approach is based on a lab-on-valve (LOV) system, allowing automatic separation and preconcentration of (99)Tc. Selectivity is provided by the solid phase extraction system used (TEVA resin) which retains selectively pertechnetate ion in diluted nitric acid solution. The proposed system has some advantages such as minimization of sample handling, reduction of reagents volume, improvement of intermediate precision and sample throughput, offering a significant decrease of both time and cost per analysis in comparison to other flow techniques and batch methods. The proposed LOV system has been successfully applied to different samples of environmental interest (water and soil) with satisfactory recoveries, between 94% and 98%. The detection limit (LOD) of the developed method is 0.005 ng. The high durability of the resin and its low amount (32 mg), its good intermediate precision (RSD 3.8%) and repeatability (RSD 2%) and its high extraction frequency (up to 5 h(-1)) makes this method an inexpensive, high precision and fast tool for monitoring (99)Tc in environmental samples.

An estimate of the inventory of technetium-99 in the sub-tidal sediments of the Irish Sea

Published results from earlier studies have provided indications that measurable quantities of technetium-99 ((99)Tc) have accumulated in the sub-tidal sediments of the Irish Sea. This is due to the enhanced discharges from the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria, UK (between 1994 and 2004). Depth distributions of (99)Tc concentrations in sub-tidal sediments have been determined from a limited number of Irish Sea sites, following the collection of deep sediment cores (up to 2 m in depth), sampled in two research cruise surveys in 2005 and 2006. Vertical concentration profiles of (99)Tc from a range of substrates in the Irish Sea are presented here and these have been used to produce an estimate of the total inventory of (99)Tc residing in the sub-tidal sediments of the Irish Sea. Significant variation was observed between (99)Tc concentrations in the sediment samples, as well as in the shape of individual depth profiles. As anticipated, concentrations tended to be greater on fine-grained (muddy) substrates and showed a general decrease with distance from Sellafield. Vertical concentration profiles of (137)Cs, and (137)Cs data from published work, have also been considered to evaluate the use of the relatively few (99)Tc core data (upon which to determine the (99)Tc inventory). The inventories of (99)Tc and (137)Cs are estimated to have been of the order of 30 and 455 terabecquerels (TBq), respectively, or ∼2% of the total cumulative Sellafield discharge for each of the two radionuclides. The residence half-time of (137)Cs in the sub-tidal sediments of the Irish Sea is estimated to be in the order of ∼16 years. Therefore, as the Kd values for (99)Tc and (137)Cs are similar, this also provides an indicative value to predict future losses of (99)Tc from the sediment reservoir.
