Abstract
Tail docking is a husbandry practice widely incorporated in sheep farms around the world. It is an irreversible mutilation that impairs animal welfare, both immediately and in the longer term. The defence of tail docking as a practice is centred around the perception that doing so contributes to the promotion of local hygiene, allowing the use of the wool, facilitating reproductive management and reducing the chances of myiasis, a disease caused by the invasion of blowfly larvae in the tissues of warm-blooded animals. However, current understanding of farm animal welfare questions the need to maintain practices such as tail docking. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of tail docking on the incidence of Cochliomyia hominivorax myiasis in sheep in an experimental flock in Brazil during a six-year retrospective cohort study. Relative risk, odds ratio and incidence rate ratio were the association measures adopted. A total of 4,318 data-points were collected and supplied the analytical model. Tail docking did not decrease the risk and, on the contrary, was found to increase the chances of sheep being affected by myiasis. The results support the hypothesis that tail docking is not a protective factor against the occurrence of myiasis and further fuel calls for a rethink of tail docking being deployed as a blanket measure in the prevention of myiasis in sheep.

Abstract
Since the late 2010s, Artificial Intelligence (AI) including machine learning, boosted through deep learning, has boomed as a vital tool to leverage computer vision, natural language processing and speech recognition in revolutionizing zoological research. This review provides an overview of the primary tasks, core models, datasets, and applications of AI in zoological research, including animal classification, resource conservation, behavior, development, genetics and evolution, breeding and health, disease models, and paleontology. Additionally, we explore the challenges and future directions of integrating AI into this field. Based on numerous case studies, this review outlines various avenues for incorporating AI into zoological research and underscores its potential to enhance our understanding of the intricate relationships that exist within the animal kingdom. As we build a bridge between beast and byte realms, this review serves as a resource for envisioning novel AI applications in zoological research that have not yet been explored.

Abstract
Beats are slow periodic amplitude modulations resulting from the superposition of two spectrally close periodic signals. The difference frequency between the signals sets the frequency of the beat. A field study in the electric fish Apteronotus rostratus showed the behavioral relevance of very high difference frequencies. Contrary to expectations from previous studies, our electrophysiological data show strong responses of p-type electroreceptor afferents whenever the difference frequency approaches integer multiples (mistuned octaves) of the fish's own electric field frequency (carrier). Mathematical reasoning and simulations show that common approaches to extract amplitude modulations, such as Hilbert transform or half-wave rectification, are not sufficient to explain the responses at carrier octaves. Instead, half-wave rectification needs to be smoothed out, for example by a cubic function. Because electroreceptive afferents share many properties with auditory nerve fibers, these mechanisms may underly the human perception of beats at mistuned octaves as described by Ohm and Helmholtz.

Abstract
Anthropogenic noise is ubiquitous across environments and can have negative effects on animals, ranging from physiology to community structure. Recent work with captive-bred zebra finches demonstrated that traffic noise also affects cognitive performance. We examined whether these results extend to animals that have experienced noise in the wild. We collected black-capped chickadees from areas frequently exposed to road traffic noise and tested them on a detour reaching task, a commonly used measure of inhibitory control. Those chickadees exposed to traffic noise playback had much lower performance on the task than control birds, indicating that noise negatively impacts inhibitory control. These data corroborate previous findings in lab-reared zebra finches. Furthermore, these results suggest that prior experience with traffic noise is not sufficient for animals to habituate to noise and overcome its negative effects on cognitive performance. Instead, noise-induced cognitive effects might have broad impacts on animal species living in noise-polluted habitats.

Abstract
Equine internships provide real world experience for students but are lightly researched. This study explored student perceptions of equine internships. We hypothesized participants would report that equine internships were valuable and relate value with compensation, skill acquisition, networking, and job offers. An online survey examined respondents' perceived value of their internship. Of 228 respondents, 186 met the inclusion criteria. Data were examined using frequency counts, correlations, and chi-square contingency tables. Breeding internships (29%) were most common, with western training and performance (18%) second highest. Half (53%) had an internship requirement for their undergraduate degree; this did not affect perceived internship value (P = 0.76). Internship value tended to be higher when housing (P = 0.075) or compensation (P = 0.057) were included. Most (91%) believed their internship added to their classroom experience; 71% felt academically prepared. Respondents gained equine-related skills (81%), soft skills (83%), customer relations (63%), business management (51%), and administrative skills (33%). Of respondents, 67% use skills gained during their internship in their current job, and 83% were able to network within the equine industry. Half of internships resulted in a job offer from that company or another offer in their area of interest. Overall, 91% of the respondents felt their internship was valuable, and 87% would recommend their internship to other students. Perceived internship value positively correlated with networking (R=0.75; P<0.0001), gaining equine skills (R=0.49; P<0.0001), and job offers (R=0.24; P<0.002). These results suggest that equine internships are positive experiences and valuable for students.

Abstract
Animal production and health are of significant economic importance, particularly regarding the world food supply. Animal and veterinary sciences have evolved immensely in the past six decades, particularly in genetics, nutrition, housing, management and health. To address major challenges such as those posed by climate change or metabolic disorders, it is of utmost importance to use state-of-the-art research tools. Proteomics and the other post-genomic tools (transcriptomics or metabolomics) are among them. Proteomics has experienced a considerable development over the last decades. This brought developments to different scientific fields. The use and adoption of proteomics tools in animal and veterinary sciences has some limitations (database availability or access to proteomics platforms and funding). As a result, proteomics' use by animal science researchers varies across the globe. In this viewpoint article, we focus on the developments of domestic animal proteomics over the last decade in different regions of the globe and how the researchers have coped with such challenges. In the second part of the article, we provide examples of funding, educational and laboratory establishment initiatives designed to foster the development of (animal-based) proteomics. International scientific collaboration is a definitive and key feature in the development and advancement of domestic animal proteomics. SIGNIFICANCE: Animal production and health are very important for food supply worldwide particularly as a source of proteinaceous foods. Animal and veterinary sciences have evolved immensely in the last decades. In order to address the major contemporary challenges facing animal and veterinary sciences, it is of utmost importance to use state-of-the-art research tools such as Proteomics and other Omics. Herein, we focus on the major developments in domestic animal proteomics worldwide during the last decade and how different regions of the world have used the technology in this specific research field. We address also major international efforts aiming to increase the research output in this area and highlight the importance of international cooperation to address specific problems inherent to domestic animal proteomics.

Abstract
Diarrhea is the most common cause of mortality and morbidity in dairy calves during the first weeks of life. It is responsible for the majority of costs related to animal death and treatments, as well as lower productivity due to reduced weight gain. Therefore, studies that focus on strategies to reduce diarrhea incidence and to improve animal welfare are very important for the dairy industry. For that reason, the beneficial effects of red propolis on the health status of preweaned dairy calves was studied. Animal disease data usually present incomplete observations of interest time, so-called censored observations and one of the statistical techniques for this modeling type is the survival analysis, hence it is a set of methods for analyzing data where the response variable is the time until the occurrence of an event of interest. We propose among some methods of survival data analysis, the long-term models. The motivation to study these models is the fact that part of the population is not susceptible to the event of interest during the period of the study, considered as immune or cured. In this paper, we studied the Weibull distribution in a structure of long-term model, including the covariates in the proportion of cured through the logistic link function. Besides, we used the residual analysis to check the assumptions of the model. The reason for the choice of the Weibull distribution was that this model is very flexibility to model a variety of data sets, among them animal science and long-term survival data. We illustrate its application with a case study from an animal experiment, which examined the time till the occurrence of diarrhea in Holstein calves, where a proportion of the animals were not susceptible to this health condition. This experiment aimed to verify the efficiency of red propolis in disease prevention and the influence of that on the proportion of animals that are not susceptible to diarrhea.

Abstract
This study examined the antioxidant status and quality of breast meat in broiler birds fed diets supplemented with pomegranate peel powder meal (PPPM). During the 35-d feeding trial, broiler birds were fed six experimental diets: diet with 0% additives (negative control; NEGCON); diet with α-Tocopherol acetate at 200 g/tonne (positive control; POSCON); and four levels (2, 4, 6 and 8 g/kg) of PPPM, designated as PPPM2, PPPM4, PPPM6, and PPPM8. Breast muscle pH was determined 15mins and 24hrs postmortem. The breast muscles were then stored at 4 °C to determine shelf-life attributes (pH, colour, hue angle, and chroma) for 16 days. Meat from the 8 g/kg PPPM had the highest thawing loss, whereas cooking loss was lowest at 2 g/kg PPPM inclusion. The meat of birds fed 2 g/kg and 4 g/kg PPPM had the highest (P<0.05) ability to scavenge the ABTS [(2, 2-azinobis (3ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid))] radical cation (ABTS+), whereas, catalase activity was increased at 8 g/kg PPPM. The results obtained in this study indicate that 2 g/kg supplementation of pomegranate peel powder meal significantly improved the water-binding capacity of broiler breast meat, owing to the reduced cooking loss of the meat, and meat from the PPPM2 (2 g/kg) group had the highest ability to scavenge ABTS.

Abstract
Marek's disease (MD) is an alphaherpesvirus (Marek's disease virus, MDV)-induced pathology of chickens associated with paralysis, immunosuppression, neurological signs, and T-cell lymphomas. MD is controlled in poultry production via live attenuated vaccines. The purpose of the current study was to compare methods for precipitating exosomes from vaccinated and protected chicken sera (VEX) and tumor-bearing chicken sera (TEX) for biomarker analysis of vaccine-induced protection and MD lymphomas respectively. A standard polyethylene glycol (PEG, 8%) method was compared to a commercial reagent (total exosome isolation reagent, TEI) for exosome yield and RNA content. Although exosomes purified by PEG or TEI were comparable in size and morphology, TEI-reagent yielded 3-4-fold greater concentration. Relative expression of 8 out of 10 G. gallus- and MDV1-encoded miRNAs examined displayed significant difference depending upon the precipitation method used. Standard PEG yields comparable, albeit lower amounts of exosomes than the TEI-reagent and a distinctive miRNA composition.

Abstract
The microfluidic dielectrophoretic (MF-DEP) chip is a new, economical and readily-available technology that might be used to enrich X-sperm for increasing female offspring in dairy farms. In this study, we sought to develop an MF-DEP chip to enrich X bovine sperm. The MF-DEP chip was composed of an electrode attached to a glass slide and a microchannel made from polydimethylsiloxane. Sex-sorted sperm from flow cytometry were used to identify optimal electric field conditions while unsorted sperm were later tested for sorting efficiency. The results show that during dielectrophoresis some sperm attached to the electrode (called positive DEP; pDEP) whereas other moved away from the electrode (called negative DEP; nDEP). X and Y-sperm responded to dielectrophoresis differently depending on various factors such as buffers, voltages, and frequencies. We found that the condition 4 V 1 MHz significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the percentage of Y-sperm to nearly 30 and therefore enriched X-sperm. The sorting efficiency was dependent on buffer, bull, sorting cycle, flow rate, electrical voltage, and frequency. Notably, the best sorting buffer found in this experiment was the conducting buffer, but this buffer significantly reduced sperm viability and motility. Other sperm-friendly buffers, TRIS and mHTF, were also used, but could not enrich X-sperm. In conclusion, this is a proof of concept that the MF-DEP chip can be effectively used to enrich bovine X-sperm. However, more research must be performed particularly to find the best sorting buffer to effectively sex-sort sperm while providing high motility and sperm viability.

Abstract
The study was carried out to obtain information on the present status and trend of finfish diversity of the Old Brahmaputra river, Bangladesh. Samples were collected directly from a professional fishing boat caught by different nets, traps and hooks from January 2019 to December 2019. Together with 4 exotic species, a total of 49 species under 6 families were recorded. Though a biodiversity index of 3.65854 and a dominance index of 0.030929 represent the richness of ichthyo-diversity within the river, Synbranchiformes and Tetraodontiformes were not reported throughout the study period. Linear regression analysis showed a positive correlation between water height of the river and monthly abundance of the species found. Catch composition of catfishes and snakeheads slumped while barbs showed triumph over previous findings. A majority of fish recorded were within the least concern category according to IUCN (2015) but portions also belonged to critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable categories as well. Therefore, conservation measures must be infixed in the Old Brahmaputra river to hold the fish diversity in a sustainable state.

Abstract
Radioimmunoassay (RIA) methods have always represented a technique of choice for the determination of steroids in biological samples. The Amplified Luminescent Proximity Homogenous Assay-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (AlphaLISA) is now emerging as the new-generation immunoassay technology that does not require washing/separation steps. The aim of this study was to adapt the Perkin-Elmer's AlphaLISA kit for wool cortisol and compare it with a RIA wool cortisol assay. Wool from lambs, 35 at birth (A0) and 54 at two months old (A2), was collected and each extract was evaluated for wool cortisol concentrations (HCC) both by RIA and AlphaLISA immunoassay. The two methods showed good precision, sensitivity and specificity for determining HCC. Both methods were able to detect significant differences between the high and the low HCC assessed in lambs at A0 and A2 (P < 0.01). The HCC assessed with RIA were significantly higher than those assessed with AlphaLISA (P < 0.01). Moreover, the correlation between HCC measured using the AlphaLISA and RIA methods was strong (r = 0.878). The regression analyses show a constant and not proportional error. This could be due to the diversity in the dosage steps and to the diversity of the molecules used in the two methods. Results support the validity of using AlphaLISA as an alternative method to RIA for the quantification of cortisol in sheep wool and considering the performances showed it has a great potential to be further applied as an excellent tool to evaluate HCC in samples derived from animal species.

Abstract
In the field of mycotoxin research, there is an increasing requirement to understand the effect of these toxins at realistic contamination levels, and as mixtures, on animal health and performance. Although there are recommendations of maximum levels of some mycotoxins in feed, it is known from practice that concentrations below the maximum recommended levels already negatively affect livestock production. In the present study, we exposed broilers to three different levels of naturally contaminated diets containing deoxynivalenol (DON) and its derivates 3 + 15 Acetyl-DON (3 + 15 Ac-DON) and DON-3-glucoside (DON-3-G) to evaluate their effect on birds performance. 630 day-old Ross 308 broilers were housed in 30 pens (21 birds per pen) and fed diets containing increasing levels of DON (Low: 1,650–1,890 μg/kg; Moderate: 2,500–2,880 μg/kg DON; and High: 3,220–3,900 μg/kg), 3 + 15 Acetyl-DON (Low: 25.6–39.4 μg/kg; Moderate: 42.3–49.1 μg/kg; and High: 58.4–71.1 μg/kg), and DON-3-G (Low: 356–362 μg/kg; Moderate: 405–637 μg/kg; and High: 625–787 μg/kg). Each diet had 10 replicate pens. During the grower period (D13-28) broilers fed diets containing moderate and high contamination levels presented a significantly increased feed intake but accompanied by significant impairment in FCR when the broilers were fed the highest contamination level. Based on this, it can be concluded that broiler production is affected when feed is contaminated with a mixture of DON and its derivates, even at levels below the EU maximum recommendation of 5,000 μg/kg. Furthermore, extra attention should be given to multi-mycotoxins contamination in diets for broilers up to 28 days old.

Abstract
Mules (Equus mulus) are interspecific hybrids derived from crossing horse (Equus caballus) mares with jackasses (Equus asinus). In Italy, the production of mules is very important for the special environmental areas, where they are used as working animals, instead of the forbidden agricultural machines. Although many horse mares carry mule pregnancy successfully at term, low fertility of mares used for producing mules was reported, but limited data about reproductive efficiency in mares carrying mule pregnancy, especially when age and reproductive status are concerned, are available. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the effect of age and of reproductive status on some reproductive indices of horse mares carrying mule pregnancy, in the final purpose to better clarify factors affecting reproductive performances in the valuable production of mules as working animals under special environmental areas in Italy. The study, performed on 96 draft mares inseminated with Martina Franca donkey semen, showed a satisfactory 89.6% 14 days PO pregnancy rate, lower pregnancy losses (19.8%) than those previously reported for mule pregnancies, leading to satisfactory foaling rates (71.9%), similar to those reported for intraspecific horse pregnancies. A clear, significant detrimental effect of mare's age on pregnancy losses, foaling rate, and on number of estrous cycles needed to achieve pregnancy, was found. Reproductive status also affected the reproductive indices, with significantly higher pregnancy losses and lower foaling rate in barren mares, reopening the question about the possible lower reproduction efficiency in horse mares carrying mule pregnancy. The present study results, although mostly descriptive, add useful information about some factors affecting reproductive performances in the valuable production of mules as working animals under special environmental areas in Italy.

Abstract
Scientists have long sought to uncover the secrets of the migration of anguillid eels, genus Anguilla. As catadromous fishes, anguillid eels spend most of their lives in freshwater until they return to their spawning grounds in the tropics, although part of the population never enters freshwater and instead resides in brackish and marine areas close to coastlines. Molecular phylogenetic research suggests that anguillid eels originated from deep-ocean midwater marine anguilliform species and that tropical eels originating from the Indo-Pacific region are the most basal species of anguillid eels. Anguillid eels left the tropical ocean to colonize temperate areas. The yearly spawning of tropical species and constant larval growth throughout the year extend to periods of recruitment in continental habitats to last all year for tropical eels. Tropical eels such as A. celebesensis and A. borneensis have relatively short migrations periods of less than 100 km to their spawning grounds. Conversely, the temperate European eel A. anguilla travels the longest distances and migrates more than 5000 km across the Atlantic Ocean to spawn in the Sargasso Sea. The ancestral state of migration in the genus Anguilla may have been local, short-scale and nonseasonal spawning migration throughout the year as defined in tropical eels. With the expansion of dispersion of global oceanic migration across the world, migration scales can gradually change. Temperate anguillid eels migrate thousands of kilometres from spawning areas to coastal and inland water habitats while retaining spawning areas in tropical areas, accompanied by seasonal downstream and spawning migrations with consequences for seasonal recruitment. Recent advances and the availability of electronic tags such as pop-up satellite archival tag could reconstruct the entire spawning migration from continental growth habitats to spawning sites with detailed migration behaviours and routes. Migration ecology and mechanisms throughout the life of anguillid eels have gradually been revealed in recent decades.

Abstract
The naked mole rat (NMR) is a rodent that has gained importance as a biomedical research model for various conditions like hypoxic brain injury, cancer and nociception. This study was designed to investigate possible involvement of the noadrenergic receptor system in antinoception in the NMR, using the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor specific ligands clonidine (agonist) and yohimbine (antagonist) in the formalin test. Formalin test followed 30 min after intraperitoneal administration of ligands or control. A total of 96 naked mole rats were used. A significant reduction in nociceptive behaviours was demonstrated after administration of clonidine in the doses 1,3,10 and 30 μg/kg (n = 8 per group). Doses of clonidine above 30 μg/kg caused loss of motor and proprietion skills exhibited by prostration and failure to turn over when placed on their backs. The antinociception by 3 μg/kg clonidine was reversed by administration of 30 μg/kg of yohimbine. The present study demonstrates that the noradrenergic receptor system is present and involved in formalin test-related antinociceptive mechanisms in the NMR, similar to other mammals. Given the increasing importance of the NMR as a model for pain and nociception, the species may prove useful as an animal model for noradrenergic mechanisms in pain modulation.

Abstract
Little is known about the correlations between the genetic susceptibility/resistance to Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) infection and the estimated breeding values for type, production and functional traits. Previously, we identified 70 combinations of five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in four bovine innate immune genes (SLC11A1, SP110, TLR2, CD209) that are associated with the genetic risk of paratuberculosis (PTB) or Johne's disease progression, which can be graded as low (LOWIN), latent (LATIN), or patent (PATIN) risk. Other possible combinations of these 5 SNPs were grouped in the average group (AVERIN). In the current study, differences in estimated breeding values (EBVs) for several traits were analyzed using linear models in a large cohort of Holstein cows (N = 15656) genotyped across Spain in 2016 or 2017. After the assignment of each genotyped cow to a risk group, cows within the PATIN risk group (N = 1448) had a superior combined genetic index (2797.57), type genetic index (524.62), milk yield (653.92 kg), protein yield (21.77 kg), fat yield (24.82 kg) and economic merit index (125 Euros) compared with the other three risk groups. Statistically significant differences in the longevity scores between the cows that were included in the PATIN risk group (108.85) and the LOWIN (107.82) and AVERIN (107.92) groups were also observed. The associations between the genetic risk groups and PTB diagnostic results were validated in a population of 99 cows from a Spanish farm with a high prevalence of PTB. Significant differences in ELISA readings between the PATIN (65.49 %) and the AVERIN (15.97 %), LATIN (2.11 %), and LOWIN (3.27 %) groups were observed. In addition, significant differences in Map DNA copies/gram of feces were observed between the PATIN and the other three risk groups. These results together with the substantial economic impact of PTB in dairy cattle support the selection of the animals with less susceptibility to PTB in the Spanish breeding program.

Abstract
Recently mud crab (Scylla olivacea) has emerged as a potential export commodity. Its farming is increasing rapidly in Bangladesh because of its lucrative price and high demand in international market. However, the farming or fattening of mud crab is totally dependent on capture of wild crablets. A huge quantity of mud crabs is being caught indiscriminately from nature and thus putting intense pressure on its wild stock, which is a major concern of conservation. Imposing ban at peak breeding season and setting a legal capture size are considered effective management tools for safe migration and spawning of berried females. There is contradictory information on breeding season of mud crab in Bangladesh. Thus, it is crucial to identify the peak breeding season of it and to formulate conservation policies to protect the berried crabs. Live crabs were collected year-round from the river adjacent to southwest part of Sundarbans. Although mud crab breeds throughout the year, March-April was identified as the peak breeding season of it. The second peak was observed in August-September. The highest abundance of crablets (1-2 months age) was recorded in May-June, and the lowest in January-February. Immature crablets were found all through the year that proves that mud crab is a continuous breeder. The highest amount of GSI value (11.6) was observed in February-March, which indicates that the breeding is very near. The size at first maturity (M50) was estimated as 95.5 mm CW which lied at size class 91-100 mm (CW). The findings from the study will assist in fixing up the banning time and thus protecting the mother crabs; and will assist in formulating police to conserve and protect juvenile crabs in the sense that the minimum legal capture size of crabs will allow the adults to mate and spawn at least once before their capture.

Abstract
To test the hypothesis that delayed/impaired uterine involution could be associated with oxinflammation, we studied the progression of the uterine involution in association with some biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in clinically healthy mares (N = 26) during early postpartum. The examination of the reproductive tract was performed on Days 7 and 21 after foaling. Uterine involution was assessed considering: a) the increase of the gravid uterine horn diameter (GUHD) compared with diameter recorded before pregnancy during the previous breeding season; b) the level of endometrial edema (EE); c) the degree of accumulation of intrauterine fluid (IUFA); d) the status of the cervix (CS). Inflammation and oxidative stress were studied by measuring serum amyloid A (SAA), cortisol, DHEA, AOPP, protein carbonyl groups, malondialdheyde (MDA) and thiols in plasma on Days 7 and 21. By Day 21 after parturition, a significant improvement (P < 0.01) was observed for GUHD and EE; while IUFA increased in six animals. Plasma SAA and DHEA concentrations were higher when the clinical parameters indicated a lower degree of uterine involution. On Day 7, the cortisol/DHEA ratio was lower in animals with higher degree of EE. Plasma AOPP and MDA concentrations were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in animals with the lower GUHD. On Day 21, plasma MDA concentrations were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in animals with the lower IUFA. Our data suggest that a mild condition of inflammation and oxidative stress occur in mares with delayed/impaired uterine involution.

Abstract
The effect of the introduction of sexually active rams in spring on LH secretion in ewes after progestagen treatment has been studied. Two rams were induced into a sexually active state by exposure to 2 months of long days (16 h of light/d) from 1 January (SAR), and another 2 rams were exposed to the natural photoperiod, so that they were not sexually activated in spring (control; C). At the end of the long-day period, rams were returned to natural photoperiod conditions. Fifteen ewes synchronized in estrus by intravaginal sponges were assigned to three groups at sponge withdrawal (hour 0): SAR (n = 5), exposed to SAR rams; C (n = 5), exposed to C rams, and ISO (n = 5), kept isolated from rams. Twenty-four hours after pessary removal (hour 0), rams were introduced into the SAR and C groups. Three SAR ewes presented preovulatory LH surges; the proportion was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in this group (3/5) than in the others (C: 0/5, ISO: 0/5). SAR introduction induced a more marked (P < 0.05) increase in mean LH plasma concentrations (before rams: 1.34 ± 0.19; after rams: 6.94 ± 2.66 ng/ml) than C (before: 0.96 ± 0.29; after: 3.60 ± 1.44) or ISO (before: 1.26 ± 0.42; after: 2.14 ± 1.36) groups, and significantly (P < 0.05) higher plasma LH levels after ram introduction. In conclusion, only light-treated sexually activated rams induced LH preovulatory surges in ewes in the seasonal anestrus, when ewes are synchronized with progestagen treatment in the absence of eCG.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal colonisation by commensal microbiota is essential for the health and well-being of the host. We aimed to evaluate the influence of a reduced bacterial load environment on microbiota development and maturation, and the possibility of targeted colonisation via at-hatch administration of a selected bacterial strain. Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) were inoculated within 1 h of hatch with a freshly grown culture of a Lactobacillus agilis isolate derived from a healthy adult quail. Hatchlings were kept in a mouse isolator for one week and then housed between one and four weeks of age, with a flock of normally grown adult quail to expose the bacteria-restricted birds to normal commensal quail bacteria. The bacterial isolate used to inoculate the birds was found to completely dominate the microbiota of the intestine of L.agilis at-hatch inoculated birds. Despite 3 weeks of co-housing of the test birds with an adult flock harbouring normal rich gut microbiota, neither the Lactobacillus inoculated nor PBS inoculated birds reached the level of bacterial diversity seen in birds raised under normal conditions. Neither PBS nor Lactobacillus inoculated birds were able to adopt normal quail microbiota after one week of restricted exposure to bacteria, indicating that contact with diverse microbiota during the early days of gut development in birds is critical for the establishment of healthy intestinal community. Very early intervention in the form of a suitable bacterial probiotic inoculant immediately post-hatch protected birds grown in extreme hygiene conditions from developing anomalous gut microbiota and intestinal damage. Our data shows that it is possible to induce dominance of desired strain using simple timed manipulation.

Abstract
The study aims to research the effects of varied dietary sources of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on the immune response in broiler chickens with stress on natural killer (NK) cell activity. Diets supplemented with one of the four sources of n-3 PUFA: linseed oil-, echium oil-, fish oil (FO) or algal biomass-enriched diets at levels of 18, 18, 50 and 15 g/kg fresh weight, were provided for one-d-old male Ross 308 broilers, totaling 340 in number, until they were slaughtered. The analyses included total lipid profile using gas chromatography (GC) for plasma, spleen, thymus, and blood. Additionally, NK cell activity and cell proliferation were investigated for thymocytes and splenocytes. The results indicated that the source of n-3 PUFA had a strong influence on fatty acid composition across all tissues. NK activity was highest in splenocytes and PBMCs from broilers fed linseed oil, followed by those fed algal biomass or echium oil, and lowest for those from broilers fed FO. The proliferative response of lymphocytes from algal biomass-fed chickens tended to be the highest, followed by those fed linseed oil in most cases. Lymphocytes from chickens fed fish oil showed the lowest proliferative response. These results could mean that a docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich algal product might enrich chicken meat with n-3 PUFA without significant damaging effects on chicken immunity.

Abstract
The subterranean termite Globitermus sulphureus is an important Southeast Asian pest with limited genomic resources that causes damages to agriculture crops and building structures. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to survey the G. sulphureus transcriptome composition. Here, we performed de novo transcriptome for G. sulphureus workers’ heads using Illumina HiSeq paired-end sequencing technology. A total of 88, 639, 408 clean reads were collected and assembled into 243, 057 transcripts and 193, 344 putative genes. The transcripts were annotated with the Trinotate pipeline. In total, 27, 061 transcripts were successfully annotated using BLASTX against the SwissProt database and 17, 816 genes were assigned to 47, 598 GO terms. We classified 14, 223 transcripts into COG classification, resulting in 25 groups of functional annotations. Next, a total of 12, 194 genes were matched in the KEGG pathway and 392 metabolic pathways were predicted based on the annotation. Moreover, we detected two endogenous cellulases in the sequences. The RT-qPCR analysis showed that there were significant differences in the expression levels of two genes β-glucosidase and endo-β-1,4-glucanase between worker and soldier heads of G. sulphureus. This is the first study to characterize the complete head transcriptome of a higher termite G. sulphureus using a high-throughput sequencing. Our study may provide an overview and comprehensive molecular resource for comparative studies of the transcriptomics and genomics of termites.

Abstract
Background Acetaminophen (APAP) at high doses causes adverse side effects such as hepatotoxicity. The aim of the current study was to investigate the hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Stachys pilifera. Benth (SP) on hepatotoxicity induced by APAP in male rats. Methods Adult male Wistar rats were allocated into four groups: control (C), APAP (2 g/kg), APAP + SP (500 mg/kg), and APAP + Silymarin (SM, 100 mg/kg) as positive control group. On the seventh day, the rats were sacrificed after taking blood samples. Then levels of biochemical parameters, oxidative stress markers and activity of antioxidant enzymes were measured. Results In the APAP group, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) enzymes activity was significantly increased and the level of protein carbonyl (PCO) was insignificantly increased as compared to control group. In addition, the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and total thiol in the APAP group was significantly decreased compared to the normal rats. Stachys pilifera. Benth extract administration significantly reduced the activity of AST and ALT enzymes and the level of PCO compared to the APAP group, while significantly elevated the activity of GPX enzyme. Conclusion Hydroalcoholic extract of SP diminishes hepatotoxicity induced by APAP by reducing the amount of liver function indicators (AST and ALT). Furthermore, the hydroalcoholic extract of SP is capable of reducing oxidative stress through inhibiting protein oxidation as well as boosting the activity of GPX enzyme. In this respect, the hepatoprotective impact induced by the SP extract may possibly be attributable to its reactive oxygen species scavenging and antioxidant properties.

Abstract
Porcine parvovirus 1 (PPV1) viral protein (VP) 2 is the primary antigen responsible for inducing specific protective immunity, so it is a desirable target for development of recombinant subunit vaccines to prevent PPV1 disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate repeated doses of a novel VP2-based PPV1 subunit vaccine, namely ReproCyc® ParvoFLEX, for safety in bred pigs and in offspring under experimental settings. Therefore, the investigation of safety at all breeding stages was evaluated in four independent studies involving: pre-breeding gilts (study A), breeding-age gilts and boars (study B), early and late gestating sows and offspring (study C) and lactating sows and offspring (study D). In all four studies, animals were free from PPV1 based on serology and PCR prior to inclusion. All studies comprised one or two vaccinated groups that received the PPV1 subunit vaccine and a negative control group. Thus, safety was established due to the lack of significant differences between the vaccinated groups and the corresponding unvaccinated (negative control) groups. Gilts, sows and boars were evaluated for local and systemic reactions after vaccination as well as for reproductive performance. The survival rate and average daily weight gain (ADWG) from birth to weaning in offspring was evaluated in studies C and D. Additionally, serology was determined in studies A, C and D. The vaccine was shown to be safe with no relevant significant differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated groups in any experiment. Therefore, repeated doses of ReproCyc® ParvoFLEX were safe in target animals at different stages of the reproductive cycle and in offspring, placing this vaccine as a suitable candidate for mass vaccination programs in breeding herds.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION E. coli is a ubiquitous bacterium commonly used as a sentinel in antimicrobial resistance studies. Here, E. coli was isolated from three groups (sick calves, healthy calves and bedding material), to assess the presence of antimicrobial resistance, describe resistance profiles, and compare these resistances among groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS Samples were collected from calves and calving pens from 20 dairy farms. Using the disc diffusion method, E. coli isolates were screened for antimicrobial resistance against seven antimicrobials: Amoxicillin, Ceftiofur, Gentamicin, Enrofloxacin, Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, Florfenicol and Oxytetracycline. Isolates resistant to all these seven antimicrobials were tested again against an extended 19 antimicrobial drug panel and for the presence of the most common E. coli pathogenicity genes through PCR. RESULTS & DISCUSSION Three hundred forty-nine E. coli isolates were obtained; most isolates were resistant to a single antimicrobial, but 2.3% (8) were resistant to 16 to 19 of the antimicrobials tested. The group with the highest percentage of multiresistant isolates was the calves with diarrhea group. Younger calves provided samples with higher antimicrobial resistance levels. CONCLUSIONS There is a high rate of antimicrobial resistance in dairy farms calving pens. These bacteria could not only be a resistance gene reservoir, but also could have the potential to spread these determinants through horizontal gene transfer to other susceptible bacteria. Measures should be taken to protect colonization of younger calves, based on hygienic measures and proper management.

Abstract
The article highlights the experimental results on calf demand provision by mammary gland secretion during the first days of post-natal development. Changes in mammary gland secretion content during the transition process from colostrum to natural milk were showed. Lactoferrin level changes were demonstrated. Population-based composition of colostrum somatic cells was determined. A hypothesis concerning apoptosis role of the somatic cells and neutrophils’ burst was presented. The present study highlights calf provision with mammary gland secretion during the first 10 days of the postnatal development.

Abstract
Prophylactic use of antibiotics in poultry diets has been identified as a problematic practice because of its potential to exacerbate the spread of antibiotic resistance to human pathogens. A range of countries have opted to completely ban the use of antibiotics in animal feed. The animal production industries are looking for alternative ways to effectively control pathogens while providing the performance benefits previously secured by antibiotics in feed. Here, we present evidence that oregano (Origanum vulgare) could be a potential alternative for pathogen control in the poultry industry. Broiler diets were supplemented with oregano powder (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2%) for six weeks. The capacity for pathogen control was estimated by microbiota profiling of the jejunum, ileum, and caecum content, and in the faeces, by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The concentrations of short-chain fatty acids in the caecal content were also measured, as were villus/crypt parameters in the ileum. There were no differences among treatments in weight gain, feed intake, or the concentration of short-chain fatty acids. The height, width, and the surface area of villi in the ileum were not influenced by oregano addition. However, 1% and 2% of oregano produced a significant increase in the villus height to crypt depth ratio. There were no visible histopathological changes in the liver in control and treated groups. Although oregano had no significant effect on overall microbial diversity and gross composition, some specific genera, like Proteus, Klebsiella and Staphylococcus, which include known pathogens, were reduced in relative abundance by oregano treatment. Bifidobacterium, recognized as a beneficial and probiotic genus, was also suppressed by the oregano treatment.

Abstract
The ability of Staphylococcus aureus to form biofilms is an important virulence factor because this has been associated with persistent bovine intramammary infections. Different mechanisms of biofilm formation have been described in S. aureus; however, the process has been found to be mainly driven by the ica and bap genes. The presence of the ica and bap genes, as well as the biofilm formation in vitro were evaluated in 229 S. aureus strains isolated from bovine milk collected from different regions of Department of Antioquia, Colombia. Three different genotypes grouped into three separate clusters were identified from in vitro assays. Genotype 1 (ica positive and bap negative) was the most prevalent (78.17%), followed by genotype 2 (ica and bap positive) (12.66%) and genotype 0 (ica and bap negative) (9.17%). Biofilm formation was observed in 81.26% of the strains from which 100% of genotype 2 isolates showed biofilm formation. The biofilms formed by genotype 2 isolates were also found to have the highest optical density (>2.4). These results showed that most of the S. aureus strains were capable of biofilm formation, suggesting the virulence potential particularly in bap-positive strains.

Abstract
Tbourida is a traditional Moroccan equestrian sport in which 15 horses gallop 200 m in a line while riders fire into the sky with muskets. The stop is the finale and representative demands of this equestrian event. Such particular sudden stop after a fast gallop requires a hyperextension of the metacarpophalangeal joint. Indeed, it is well known that Tbourida show predisposes horses to different injuries of the hard and soft tissues of the distal forelimbs. Yet, there is a paucity of research that examined such lesions. The aim of the present study was to investigate for the first time the type and the prevalence of osteoarticular findings in the distal forelimbs of Tbourida horses using radiographic images. The study was conducted on 127 Tbourida horses aged between 2.5 and 15 years old with 6-year-old horses being the most affected. Data analysis showed that 93,7% of horses exhibit degenerative joint lesions of the fetlock, 86,6% showed ossification of the ungual cartilage, 78,7% had enthesophytes associated with the deep digital flexor tendons, 81,1% had enthesophytes associated with the suspensory ligament branches, and 19,6% showed a particular exostosis on the first phalanx. This large number of lesions reflects how this sport is difficult for horses and also argues that animals are suffering from a lack of welfare and care in their husbandry management.

Abstract
This study identified the endoparasites in Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) during May to July 2017 in Grenada, West Indies. A total of 162 rats, 76 females and 86 males were trapped from St. George and St. David parishes in Grenada. The collected fecal samples were examined for parasitic eggs and/or oocysts using simple fecal flotation technique. Adult parasites found in the intestinal tract were examined for identification. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites among rats was 79 %. Ten helminth species were recovered, several of which were reported for the first time in rodents in Grenada. The internal parasites consist of seven nematodes (Angiostrongylus spp., Nippostrongylus braziliensis, Heterakis spumosa, Strongyloides ratti, Aspiculuris tetraptera, Syphacia spp. and Protospirura spp.), one cestode (Hymenolepsis diminuta), one acanthocephalan (Moniliformis moniliformis) and one protozoa species (Eimeria spp.). The most prevalent zoonotic species were Angiostrongylus spp. (35.2%), Hymenolepsis diminuta (7.4%) and Moniliformis moniliformis (3.1%). Several nonzoonotic endoparasites; which included Nippostrongylus braziliensis (50.6%), Heterakis spumosa (15.4%), Strongyloides ratti (43.2%), Aspiculuris tetraptera (2.5%), Syphacia spp. (1.9%), Protospirura spp. (1.2%) and Eimeria spp. (4.7%) were also identified. The most prevalent parasites were Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (50.6%), Strongyloides ratti (43.2%) and Angiostrongylus spp. (35.2%). Co-infections occurred with up to six species per rat showing different combinations of parasitic infections.
