Spatio-temporal accumulation and sources of anthropogenic Pb in Ulleung Basin sediments, East/Japan Sea, based on stable Pb isotope ratios

The accumulation, pathways, and sources of anthropogenic lead (Pb) in Ulleung Basin sediments were investigated based on the temporal and spatial variations in the Pb concentration and stable Pb isotopes for 21 dated box core sediments collected from the shelf, slope, and basin in the southern East/Japan Sea. Leached (1 M HCl) Pb concentrations and isotope ratios (207Pb/206Pb and 208Pb/206Pb) were nearly constant before 1930, but have increased rapidly until the present. The primary source of anthropogenic Pb is considered to be atmospheric deposition, showing the signature of a mixture of leaded gasoline and coals, which was the major anthropogenic source in the basin. However, after the 1990s, anthropogenic Pb from dumping materials added as much as 10-25% to the slope sediment and has been spreading out from the water column accompanied by the movement of the East Sea Intermediate Water. In shelf areas, inputs from nonferrous refineries in the coastal industrial complexes play an important role in pollution from anthropogenic Pb.

Legacy of anthropogenic lead in urban soils: Co-occurrence with metal(loids) and fallout radionuclides, isotopic fingerprinting, and in vitro bioaccessibility

Anthropogenic lead (Pb) in soils poses risks to human health, particularly to the neuropsychological development of exposed children. Delineating the sources and potential bioavailability of soil Pb, as well as its relationship with other contaminants is critical in mitigating potential human exposure. Here, we present an integrative geochemical analysis of total elemental concentrations, radionuclides of ¹³⁷Cs and ²¹⁰Pb, Pb isotopic compositions, and in vitro bioaccessibility of Pb in surface soils sampled from different locations near Durham, North Carolina. Elevated Pb (>400 mg/kg) was commonly observed in soils from urban areas (i.e., near residential house foundation and along urban streets), which co-occurred with other potentially toxic metal(loids) such as Zn, Cd, and Sb. In contrast, soils from city parks and suburban areas had systematically lower concentrations of metal(loids) that were comparable to geological background. The activities of ¹³⁷Cs and excess ²¹⁰Pb, coupled with their correlations with Pb and co-occurring metal(loids) were used to indicate the persistence and remobilization of historical atmospherically deposited contaminants. Coupled with total Pb concentrations, the soil Pb isotopic compositions further indicated that house foundation soils had significant input of legacy lead-based paint (mean = 1.1895 and 2.0618 for ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb and ²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁶Pb, respectively), whereas urban streetside soils exhibited a clear mixed origin, dominantly of legacy leaded gasoline (1.2034 and 2.0416) and atmospheric deposition (1.2004-1.2055 and 2.0484-2.0525). The in vitro bioaccessibility of Pb in contaminated urban soils furthermore revealed that more than half of Pb in the contaminated soils was potentially bioavailable, whose Pb isotope ratios were identical to that of bulk soils, demonstrating the utility of using Pb isotopes for tracking human exposure to anthropogenic Pb in soils and house dust. Overall, this study demonstrated a holistic assessment for comprehensively understanding anthropogenic Pb in urban soils, including its co-occurrence with other toxic contaminants, dominant sources, and potential bioavailability upon human exposure.

Evidence for increasing anthropogenic Pb concentrations in Indian shelf sediments during the last century

India is industrializing rapidly and with this there comes higher releases of contaminants into the environment. Change in Pb deposition over the last century on the eastern (off Andhra Pradesh) and western (off Karnataka) shelves of India was investigated based on the data extracted from two sediment cores covering the past ~114 and ~145 yrs. The variations of the total Pb content, its enrichment factor, and concentrations of non-residual Pb in both the sediment cores document that there was a gradual increase in anthropogenic Pb input into the coastal sediments of India over the last century. Sediment leachates were used to monitor the increase in anthropogenic Pb input and its Pb isotope composition. The anthropogenic end member composition of the western shelf sediment location (²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb: 1.105; ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁸Pb: 2.149) was significantly less radiogenic than the eastern shelf isotopic composition (²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb: 1.145; ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁸Pb:2.120). A binary mixing model suggests that Pb emitted from the heavy industries (e.g., ore mining, Pb processing and smelting plants) of India has been the major source of anthropogenic Pb to the sediments of western continental shelf. In contrast, the isotopic signatures suggest that coal combustion is responsible for elevated anthropogenic Pb levels in the sediments from the eastern shelf of India.

The fate of anthropogenic Pb in soils; years after Pb terminated as a fuel additive; Northern Israel

The source for Lead (Pb) pollution in soils from the heavily industrialized area located along the coast of the Eastern Mediterranean, Haifa Bay, Northern Israel, is studied using the lead isotopic composition. The uniqueness of the studied data set is that it includes samples of soils, road-wash, and storm-dust sampled for nearly three decades (1988-2017). Road-wash sediments are similar in both elemental and Pb isotopic composition to soils sampled in the same year (2010), indicating re-suspension of local soil, as its origin. Soils sampled during and before 1993 show no evidence for Pb contamination (bulk soil values), although Pb as an additive was already in use. Furthermore, soil overturns hinder the possibility to trace changes in the Pb isotopic composition with time in soils of the same location. Soils sampled from 1995-8 to 2013 were significantly dominated by Post-1992 Pb additive, pointing to Pb's peak as an additive. Soils Pb and Zn Enrichment factors for most samples are below 5, and their anthropogenic source is likely common. Forest fire enriched Pb and Zn in the soil, and their Pb isotope compositions reflect this enrichment. Lead from the Hod Assaf recycling plant detected up to some 2.5 km away, and although not analyzed in the current study, dioxin-like compounds possibly accompanied Pb.

Tracing the sources of lead (Pb) in Brunei Bay, Borneo by using integrated spectrometry ICP-MS and chemometric techniques

The present study aims to define the possible sources that contribute to the level of Pb into the Brunei Bay, Borneo. The cluster analysis has classified the bay into the northern part with heavy and agriculture-related industries; the southern area with a moderate rural human settlement as well as the southwestern area with a more pristine environment and a low level of human settlement. The score plot of spatial discriminant analysis verified a significant influence of the river system toward the estuary, whereas the temporal discriminant analysis has discriminated the seasonal changes. In comparison to elsewhere, the stable Pb isotopic ratios in Brunei Bay showed a fingerprint similar to coal-related sources and of aerosol input. Briefly, even though Pb in the Brunei Bay ecosystem proved to be at a low level, the stable Pb isotopic ratios showed that human and industrial activities are slowly contributing Pb into the bay ecosystem.

Lead isotopes and heavy minerals analyzed as tools to understand the distribution of lead and other potentially toxic elements in soils contaminated by Cu smelting (Legnica, Poland)

Surroundings of the Legnica Cu smelter (Poland) offer insight into the behavior of Pb and other metal(oid)s in heavily contaminated soils in a relatively simple site, where lithogenic and anthropogenic Pb contributions have uniform Pb isotope composition over the time of smelter activity. Distribution of metal(oid)s decreases asymptotically with depth and below 30 cm reaches concentrations typical or lower than those of upper continental crust. Usually, such distribution is interpreted as the decrease in anthropogenic Pb contribution with depth. However, calculations based on Pb isotopes indicate that anthropogenic Pb is probably distributed both as Pb-rich particles of slags and fly ashes and Pb-poor soil solutions. Generally, anthropogenic Pb constitutes up to 100 % of Pb in the uppermost 10 cm of the soils and comes often from mechanical mixing with slag and fly ash particles as well as their weathering products. On the other hand, lower soil horizon contains anthropogenic Pb in various forms, and at depths below 30 cm, most of anthropogenic Pb comes from soil solutions and can constitute from 1 to 65 % of the Pb budget. This is consistent with secondary electron microscope (SEM) analyses of heavy mineral particles showing that, in upper horizons, Pb, Cu, and Zn are contained in various particles emitted from the smelter, which show different stages of weathering. Currently, large portion of these metals may reside in the secondary Fe-hydro-oxides. On the other hand, in deeper soil horizons, anthropogenic Pb is probably dominated by Pb coming from leaching of slag or fly ash particles. Overall, metal(oid) mobility is a dynamic process and is controlled by the soil type (cultivated versus forest) and the composition and the structure of the metal-rich particles emitted from the smelter. High proportions of anthropogenic Pb at depths below 30 cm in some soil profiles indicate that Pb (and probably other metal(oid)s) can be transported down the soil profile and the present concentration of anthropogenic Pb depends on the availability of binding sites.
