Abstract
As an auxiliary method in the process of human identification, forensic facial approximation (FFA) is an important tool for identifying unknown human bodies whose remains do not present the necessary traceability to any antemortem data collection. Specific characteristics are necessary when addressing children aged between 6 and 10 years, who have little sexual differentiation and a mixed dentition. Due to the chronology of eruption of the permanent second molars in this population, it is not possible to measure facial soft-tissue thickness (FSTT) from specific landmarks such as supra and infra M2. The objective of this research was to report the method for measuring the average FSTT of 32 landmarks adapting the method for adults replacing the landmarks at the upper and lower second molars (Supra M2 and Infra M2) in children up to 10 years of age for a measurement using the deciduous second molars as reference. We found statistical differences for some points, considering the variables of age and sex, but with a maximum difference of 2 mm, which allows the use of a single FSTT table. The deciduous teeth can replace the reference of the thicknesses at the supra and infra M2 landmarks. In addition to the new FSTT data for children in Brazil, we concluded that the proposed adaptation to the deciduous M2 points can be applied to obtain soft-tissue data for 32 facial points.

Abstract
Purpose This study evaluated the impact of artifacts generated by metal crowns on the detection of proximal caries lesions in teeth at various distances using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Additionally, the diagnostic impacts of tube current and metal artifact reduction (MAR) were investigated. Materials and Methods Thirty teeth were arranged within 10 phantoms, each containing 1 first premolar, 1 second premolar, and 1 second molar. A sound first molar (for the control group) or a tooth with a metal crown was placed. Of the 60 proximal surfaces evaluated, 15 were sound and 45 exhibited enamel caries. CBCT scans were acquired using an OP300 Maxio unit (Instrumentarium, Tuusula, Finland), while varying the tube current (4, 8, or 12.5 mA) and enabling or disabling MAR. Five observers assessed mesial and distal surfaces using a 5-point scale. Multi-way analysis of variance was employed for data comparison, with P<0.05 indicating statistical significance. Results The area under the curve (AUC) varied from 0.40 to 0.60 (sensitivity: 0.28-0.45, specificity: 0.44-0.80). The diagnostic accuracy was not significantly affected by the presence of a metal crown, milliamperage, or MAR (P>0.05). However, the overall AUC and specificity were significantly lower for surfaces near a crown (P<0.05). Conclusion CBCT-based caries detection was not influenced by the presence of a metal crown, variations in milliamperage, or MAR activation. However, the diagnostic accuracy was low and was further diminished for surfaces near a crown. Consequently, CBCT is not recommended for the detection of incipient caries lesions.

Abstract
A 54-year-old male patient presented for a periodic check-up at the dental clinic. A panoramic radiograph showed bilateral ossification of the stylohyoid ligament with an oval radiopacity on the right side. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a well-defined, homogenous hyperdense entity from the lower third of the ossified stylohyoid ligament on the right side. The differential diagnosis of osteoma on the stylohyoid chain includes Eagle syndrome and benign tumors of the stylohyoid chain and adjacent structures. Osteoma rarely manifests in the neck. Even more infrequent are tumors originating from the stylohyoid chain, with only a single documented case of osteoma reported in the literature in 1993. Due to the asymptomatic status, no surgical intervention was advised, and the case would be monitored periodically. This case report describes the details of an osteoma that emerged from the stylohyoid chain, marking it as the second recorded occurrence of this highly rare condition.

Abstract
The author herein presents an unusual case of eustachian tube calcification masquerading as loose radiopacities in the temporomandibular joints on a panoramic image, creating a diagnostic challenge. The patient, a 72-year-old woman, presented to the dental service for implant treatment to improve her masticatory function. A cone-beam computed tomography scan was performed and reviewed by a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist. The scan showed no evidence of calcifications in the temporomandibular joints; however, it revealed nodular calcifications within the cartilaginous portion of the eustachian tube bilaterally. Additionally, this report briefly reviews the differential diagnosis of calcified loose bodies in the temporomandibular joint and provides information that needs to be reinforced periodically.

Abstract
Primary aldosteronism is a group of disorders in which the autonomous secretion of aldosterone is associated with hypertension and hypokalemia. It is crucial to determine the laterality of aldosterone hypersecretion because treatment options differ accordingly. Adrenal venous sampling (AVS) is considered the most reliable method for assessing the laterality of primary aldosteronism. This procedure is often technically challenging because of the small size and varied locations of the adrenal veins. A better understanding of anatomical variations and careful review of imaging studies would improve sampling success. This report presents three cases of anatomical variations encountered during AVS.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to evaluate age-stratified radiographic features in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis using cone-beam computed tomography. Materials and Methods In total, 210 joints from 183 patients (144 females, 39 males, ranging from 12 to 88 years old with a mean age of 44.75±19.97 years) diagnosed with temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis were stratified by age. Mandibular condyle position and bony changes (flattening, erosion, osteophytes, subchondral sclerosis, and subchondral pseudocysts in both the condyle and articular eminence, thickening of the glenoid fossa, joint space narrowing, and joint loose bodies) were evaluated through cone-beam computed tomography. After adjusting for sex, the association between age groups and radiographic findings was analyzed using both a multiple regression model and a multinomial logistic regression model (α=0.05). Results The prevalence of joint space narrowing and protruded condyle position in the glenoid fossa significantly increased with age (P<0.05). The risks of bony changes, including osteophytes and subchondral pseudocysts in the condyle; flattening, erosion, osteophyte, and subchondral sclerosis in the articular eminence; joint loose bodies; and thickening of the glenoid fossa, also significantly rose with increasing age (P<0.05). The number of radiographic findings increased with age; in particular, the increase was more pronounced in the temporal bone than in the mandibular condyle (P<0.05). Conclusion Increasing age was associated with a higher frequency and greater diversity of bony changes in the temporal bone, as well as a protruded condyle position in the glenoid fossa, resulting in noticeable joint space narrowing in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis.

Abstract
Purpose This study was conducted to investigate the safety of dental imaging in pregnant women with respect to fetal health. Materials and Methods Searches were conducted of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases in May 2023. The inclusion criteria encompassed cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that focused on the analysis of diagnostic dental imaging in pregnant women, as well as studies utilizing phantoms to simulate imaging examinations. The exclusion criteria consisted of reviews, letters to the editor, book chapters, and abstracts from scientific conferences and seminars. Results A total of 3,913 articles were identified. Based on a review of the titles and abstracts, 3,892 articles were excluded, leaving 21 articles remaining for full-text review. Of these, 18 were excluded, and 4 additional articles were included as cross-references. Ultimately, 7 articles underwent quantitative-qualitative analysis. Three retrospective studies were focused on pregnant women who underwent dental imaging procedures. The remaining 4 studies utilized female phantoms to simulate imaging examinations and represent the radiation doses absorbed by the uterus or thyroid. Conclusion Few dental radiology studies have been conducted to determine the safe radiation threshold for pregnant women. Additionally, the reviewed articles did not provide numbers of dental examinations, by type, corresponding to this dose. Dental imaging examinations of pregnant women should not be restricted if clinically indicated. Ultimately, practitioners must be able to justify the examination and should adhere to the "as low as diagnostically acceptable, being indication-oriented and patient-specific" (ALADAIP) principle of radioprotection.

Abstract
Simple bone cyst is a pseudocyst that typically occurs in patients during their second and third decades of life. This benign entity is an empty or fluid-filled cavity that lacks a true epithelial lining. Simple bone cysts are often asymptomatic and are commonly found in mandibular body, predominantly in the posterior region. The treatment of simple bone cysts can be influenced by factors such as the patient's age, the size of the lesion, and the presence or absence of symptoms. In the case of a simple bone cyst in the mandible that is small and symptomless, a watchful waiting approach may be appropriate. However, if the cyst is large and symptomatic, surgical treatment is recommended. This report presents a radiological examination of a simple bone cyst that developed around the root of the mandibular first molar in a 36-year-old female patient. The cyst recurred in adjacent areas despite surgical treatment.

Abstract
Purpose This study assessed the diagnostic performance of stitched and non-stitched cross-sectional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of non-displaced ovine mandibular fractures. Materials and Methods In this ex vivo study, non-displaced fractures were artificially created in 10 ovine mandibles (20 hemi-mandibles) using a hammer. The control group comprised 8 hemi-mandibles. The non-displaced fracture lines were oblique or vertical, <0.5 mm wide, 10-20 mm long, and only in the buccal or lingual cortex. Fracture lines in the ramus and posterior mandible were created to be at the interface or borders of the 2 stitched images. CBCT images were obtained from the specimens with an 80 mm × 80 mm field of view before and after fracture induction. OnDemand software (Cybermed, Seoul, Korea) was used for stitching the CBCT images. Four observers evaluated 56 (28 stitched and 28 non-stitched) images to detect fracture lines. The diagnostic performance of stitched and non-stitched images was assessed by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Sensitivity and specificity values were also calculated (alpha=0.05). Results The AUC was calculated to be 0.862 and 0.825 for the stitched and non-stitched images, respectively (P=0.747). The sensitivity and specificity were 90% and 75% for the non-stitched images and 85% and 87% for the stitched images, respectively. The inter-observer reliability was shown by a Fleiss kappa coefficient of 0.79, indicating good agreement. Conclusion No significant difference was found in the diagnostic performance of stitched and non-stitched cross-sectional CBCT images of non-displaced fractures of the ovine mandible.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to investigate the potential factors that could affect the reduction rate of odontogenic cysts following decompression using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for 3-dimensional volumetric analysis. Materials and Methods The study sample consisted of CBCT images of 41 individuals who underwent decompression of odontogenic cysts at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, between 2010 and 2022. Preoperative and postoperative CBCT results were collected, and a volumetric analysis was conducted to evaluate the differences in the reduction rate and the percentage of volume reduction of cystic lesions based on different parameters. Correlations between these parameters were analyzed to determine associations. Results In this study, the average time of decompression for odontogenic cysts was 316 days. Males demonstrated a higher reduction rate than females (P<0.05). The reduction rate was directly proportional to initial cyst volume, with higher reduction rates for cysts with large initial volume than those with small initial volume (P<0.05). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient indicated a weak positive correlation between the initial cyst volume and the duration of decompression. Additionally, a strong positive correlation was observed between the initial volume and the reduction rate. Conclusion Knowledge of the reduction rate of odontogenic cysts is vital for surgeons to evaluate the duration of decompression before enucleation and to determine a definitive treatment plan. Sex and initial lesion volume had significant effects on the reduction rate.

Abstract
Purpose The objective of this study was to propose a method for developing a clinical phantom to reproduce various diseases that are clinically prevalent in the field of dentistry. This could facilitate diverse clinical research without unnecessarily exposing patients to radiation. Material and Methods This study utilized a single dry skull, which was visually and radiographically examined to evaluate its condition. Existing lesions on the dry skull were preserved, and other relevant lesions were artificially created as necessary. These lesions were then documented using intraoral radiography and cone-beam computed tomography. Once all pre-existing and reproduced lesions were confirmed by the consensus of 2 oral and maxillofacial radiologists, the skull was embedded in a soft tissue substitute. To validate the process, cone-beam computed tomography scans and panoramic radiographs were obtained of the fabricated phantom. All acquired images were subsequently evaluated. Results Most lesions could be identified on panoramic radiographs, although some sialoliths and cracked teeth were confirmed only through cone-beam computed tomographic images. A small gap was observed between the epoxy resin and the bone structures. However, 2 oral and maxillofacial radiologists agreed that this space did not meaningfully impact the interpretation process. Conclusion The newly developed phantom has potential for use as a standardized phantom within the dental field. It may be utilized for a variety of imaging studies, not only for optimization purposes, but also for addressing other experimental issues related to both 2- and 3-dimensional diagnostic radiography.

Abstract
Purpose This bibliometric analysis aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the characteristics, trends, and level of diagnostic efficacy of studies on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) published in Imaging Science in Dentistry (ISD) from 2011 to 2022. Materials and Methods Publications related to CBCT identified in the electronic collection of ISD were selected according to eligibility criteria by 2 independent reviewers who collected data on the characteristics of the articles (year, authors, and country). The type and topic of studies were analyzed using VOSviewer v.1.6.18 (Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands). The research articles were classified according to the hierarchical scale of diagnostic efficacy. Results Of the 236 articles included, most were from South Korea and Brazil. Bong-Hae Cho and Yun-Hoa Jung were the most prolific authors on the topic of CBCT. The most frequently published types of studies were cross-sectional and laboratory-based. The most popular topics WERE related to the diagnosis of pathologies and/or alterations, as well as anatomical variations. On the diagnostic efficacy scale, most studies were rated level 1 (technical efficacy) or 2 (diagnostic accuracy efficacy). Conclusion A steady increase was observed in publications related to CBCT, which are of both clinical and academic interest. The trends in these publications were analyzed, revealing that most are cross-sectional studies primarily exploring the capabilities of CBCT in diagnosing pathologies and/or changes in the oral and maxillofacial complex. These studies were typically classified as level 1 or 2 on the diagnostic efficacy scale.

Abstract
The apnea-hypopnea index is widely regarded as a measure of the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition characterized by recurrent episodes of apnea or hypopnea during sleep that induce airway collapse. OSA is a catastrophic problem due to the wide range of health issues it can cause, including cardiovascular disease and memory loss. This review was conducted to clarify the roles of various imaging modalities, particularly cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), in the diagnosis of and preoperative planning for OSA. Unfortunately, 2-dimensional imaging techniques yield insufficient data for a comprehensive diagnosis, given the complex anatomy of the airway. Three-dimensional (3D) imaging is favored as it more accurately represents the patient's airway structure. Although computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can depict the actual 3D airway architecture, their use is limited by factors such as high radiation dose and noise associated with the scans. This review indicates that CBCT is a low-radiation imaging technique that can be used to incidentally identify patients with OSA, thereby facilitating early referral and ultimately enhancing the accuracy of surgical outcome predictions.

Abstract
Purpose The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the accuracy and image quality of root surface area (RSA) measurements obtained with various cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) protocols, relative to the gold standard of micro-computed tomography (CT), in an in vitro setting. Materials and Methods Four dry human skulls were scanned using 8 different protocols, with voxel sizes of 0.15 mm, 0.3 mm, and 0.4 mm. Three-dimensional models of the selected teeth were constructed using CBCT and micro-CT protocols, and the RSA was automatically measured by the image-processing software. The absolute difference in the percentage of the RSA (%ΔRSA) was calculated and compared across the 8 CBCT protocols using repeated-measures analysis of variance. Finally, image quality scores of the RSA measurements were computed and reported in terms of percent distribution. Results No significant differences were observed in the %ΔRSA across the 8 protocols (P>0.05). The deviation in %ΔRSA ranged from 1.51% to 4.30%, with an increase corresponding to voxel size. As the voxel size increased, the image quality deteriorated. This decline in quality was particularly noticeable at the apical level of the root, where the distribution of poorer scores was most concentrated. Conclusion Relative to CBCT protocols with voxel sizes of 0.15 mm and 0.3 mm, the protocols with a voxel size of 0.4 mm demonstrated inferior image quality at the apical levels. In spite of this, no significant discrepancies were observed in RSA measurements across the different CBCT protocols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knowledge about the anatomy and morphology of the root canal system is essential for successful surgical and non-surgical root canal treatments. However, precise assessment of the root morphology and anatomy is not often possible on two-dimensional radiographs. This study aimed to investigate the association of root morphology of mandibular second molars on panoramic-like and axial views of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS This cross-sectional study evaluated 1,231 CBCT scans of mandibular second molars obtained between October 2018 and February 2022 that were retrieved from the archives of a private radiology clinic. Panoramic-like images were reconstructed from the CBCT scans. The root morphology of mandibular second molars was classified on panoramic-like images as type 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. The root pattern on axial CBCT images was classified into three types of single, double and C-shaped. The association of root morphology on panoramic-like and axial CBCT views was analyzed by the Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test at 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS Of all, 62.7% of mandibular second molars were type 1; out of which, 97.3% had a double-root pattern on axial CBCT images. Also, 28.6% of them were type 2; of which, 92.6% had a double-root pattern. Moreover, 3.9% were type 3; of which, 47.9% had a C-shaped pattern; 0.9% were type 4, and 45.5% of them showed a single-root pattern; 3.8% were type 5 with 76.6% of them showing a single-root pattern. The prevalence of C-shaped canals was higher in females, and most C-shaped canals had a C3 pattern. CONCLUSION Root morphology on panoramic-like CBCT views had a strong association with the root canal pattern on axial CBCT views. According to the results, mandibular second molars with a type 3 morphology on panoramic-like CBCT images are highly probable to have a C-shaped canal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify clinical and local radiographic predictors for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) by the assessment of pre-operative CBCT images of oncologic patients treated with anti-resorptive drugs (ARDs) undergoing tooth extractions. METHODS This retrospective, longitudinal, case-control study included clinical and imaging data of 97 patients, divided into study and control group. Patients in the study group (n = 47; 87 tooth extractions) had received at least one dose of ARD, undergone tooth extraction(s), and had a pre-operative CBCT. An age-, gender-, and tooth extraction-matched control group (n = 50; 106 tooth extractions) was selected. Three calibrated, blinded, and independent examiners evaluated each tooth extraction site. Statistical analysis used χ2/Fisher's exact/Mann-Whitney U test to contrast control and study group, ARD type used, and sites with or without MRONJ development. p-value ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS From the study group, 15 patients (32%) and 33 sites (38%) developed MRONJ after tooth extraction. When controls were compared to study sites, the latter showed significantly more thickening of the lamina dura, widened periodontal ligament space, osteosclerosis, osteolysis, and sequestrum formation. In the study group, MRONJ risk significantly increased in patients who had multiple tooth extractions, were smokers, and had shorter drug holidays. Periosteal reaction and sequestrum formation may indicate latent MRONJ lesions. Additionally, patients given bisphosphonates showed considerably more osteosclerosis than those given denosumab. CONCLUSIONS Periosteal reaction and sequestrum formation are suspected to be pre-clinical MRONJ lesions. Furthermore, ARD induced bony changes and radiographic variations between ARD types were seen.

Abstract
In this study we aim to describe the three-dimensional analysis of condylar deformation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and morphological changes of the craniofacial jaw in patients with idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR). We also compare those with a control group that is healthy and matched for age and gender. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and cephalometric radiograph (X-ray) were conducted and analysis of craniofacial measurement, condylar width, length, height, and condylar axial angle changes were done three-dimensionally using ProPlan CMF™ 3.0 software (Materialise). The craniofacial jaw measurements of the ICR patients were significantly different than the control group and the significant changes in the mandible can be seen in ICR patients according to the results of this study. The results of smaller condylar width and height in the ICR group reflect the smaller size of the condyle compared with an unaffected condyle. Also, both right and left sagittal condylar angles (p = 0.001 and p = 0.003), respectively, and axial condylar angles (p = 0.01 and p = 0.02), respectively, displayed significant differences between the two groups. In conclusion, the vertical development of the condyle decreased along with reduced measurements in the width and height of the condyle in ICR patients, and differences in the morphology of the craniofacial jaw and condylar angles were observed between study groups.

OBJECTIVES This study aims to determine the reproducibility and location-stability of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) radiomic features. METHODS Centrifugal tubes with six concentrations of K2HPO4 solutions (50, 100, 200, 400, 600, and 800 mg ml-1) were imaged within a customized phantom. For each concentration, images were captured twice as test and retest sets. Totally, 69 radiomic features were extracted by LIFEx. The reproducibility was assessed between the test and retest sets. We used the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) to screen qualified features and then compared the differences in the numbers of them under 24 series (four locations groups * six concentrations). The location-stability was assessed using the Kruskal-Wallis test under different concentration sets; likewise, the numbers of qualified features under six test sets were analyzed. RESULTS There were 20 and 23 qualified features in the reproducibility and location-stability experiments, respectively. In the reproducibility experiment, the performance of the peripheral groups and high-concentration sets was significantly better than the center groups and low-concentration sets. The effect of concentration on the location-stability of features was not monotonic, and the number of qualified features in the low-concentration sets was greater than that in the high-concentration sets. No features were qualified in both experiments. CONCLUSIONS The density and location of the target object can affect the number of reproducible radiomic features, and its density can also affect the number of location-stable radiomic features. The problem of feature reliability should be treated cautiously in radiomic research on CBCT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Different factors can affect the discrepancy between the gray value (GV) measurements obtained from CBCT and the Hounsfield unit (HU) derived from multidetector CT (MDCT), which is considered the gold-standard density scale. This study aimed to explore the impact of region of interest (ROI) location and field of view (FOV) size on the difference between these two scales as a potential source of error. METHODS Three phantoms, each consisting of a water-filled plastic bin containing a dry dentate human skull, were prepared. CBCT scans were conducted using the NewTom VGi evo system, while MDCT scans were performed using Philips system. Three different FOV sizes (8 × 8 cm, 8 × 12 cm, and 12 × 15 cm) were used, and the GVs obtained from eight distinct ROIs were compared with the HUs from the MDCT scans. The ROIs included dental and bony regions within the anterior and posterior areas of both jaws. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS v. 26. RESULTS The GVs derived from CBCT images were significantly influenced by both ROI location and FOV size (p < 0.05 for both factors). Following the comparison between GVs and HUs, the anterior mandibular bone ROI represented the minimum error, while the posterior mandibular teeth exhibited the maximum error. Moreover, the 8 × 8 cm and 12 × 15 cm FOVs resulted in the lowest and highest degrees of GV error, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The ROI location and the FOV size can significantly affect the GVs obtained from CBCT images. It is not recommended to use the GV scale within the posterior mandibular teeth region due to the potential for error. Additionally, selecting smaller FOV sizes, such as 8 × 8 cm, can provide GVs closer to the gold-standard numbers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the distortion of high-density materials using two CBCT devices presenting convex triangular and cylindrical fields of view (FOVs). METHODS AND MATERIALS Four high-density cylinders were individually placed in a polymethylmethacrylate phantom. 192 CBCT scans were acquired using the convex triangular and cylindrical FOVs of Veraviewepocs® R100 (R100) and Veraview® X800 (X800) devices. Using HorosTM's software, two oral radiologists determined the cylinders' horizontal and vertical dimensional alterations. Nine oral radiologists subjectively identified each cylinder's axial shape distortion. Statistical analysis comprised Multiway ANOVA (α = 5%), and the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS The distortion in the axial plane was greater in the convex triangular FOVs for both devices in almost all the materials (p < 0.05). The evaluators subjectively identified a shape distortion in both FOVs for R100 device (p < 0.001), while no distortion was identified for X800 device (p = 0.620). A vertical magnification of all materials was observed in both FOVs for both devices (p < 0.05). No differences among vertical regions (p = 0.988) nor FOVs (p = 0.544) were found for the R100 device, while all materials showed higher magnification in all regions in the cylindrical FOV (p < 0.001) of the X800 device. CONCLUSIONS The convex triangular FOV influenced the axial distortion of the high-density materials in both devices. A vertical magnification was observed in both FOVs of both devices, but it was greater in the cylindrical FOV of the X800 device.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the accuracy of fused CBCT images in diagnosing three distinct groups of bone changes characterized by volume and thickness decrease in patients with temporomandibular joint osteoarthrosis (TMJ OA) during follow-up. METHODS In this retrospective study, 109 patients (176 TMJs) with TMJ OA were included. Two consecutive CBCT images for the same patient were registered and fused. Then, three image sets were established: without fusion, fused 2D image, and fused 3D image. Three residents randomly and independently evaluated whether there was condylar resorption with the three image sets respectively. The samples diagnosed as condylar resorption by the expert panel were divided into three subgroups according to the volume and thickness decrease calculated after segmentation. The inter- and intraobserver agreement, receiver operating characteristic (ROC), and area under the curve (AUC) evaluated the diagnostic capability for different subgroups. RESULTS For the volume decrease more than 50 mm3 and thickness decrease more than 1 mm groups, the AUC values for fused image sets were higher than those without fusion (p < 0.01). For the volume decrease within 50 mm3 and thickness decrease within 1 mm groups, the AUC values for fused 2D image sets were higher than the image sets without fusion (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between the fused 3D image sets and the image sets without fusion (p = 0.48 for volume decrease, p = 0.37 for thickness decrease). CONCLUSIONS The fused images can improve the diagnostic accuracy and repeatability for the samples with at least 50 mm3 volume decrease or 1 mm thickness decrease compared with the image groups without fusion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osseous changes of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are related to the progression of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and computed tomography (CT) plays a vital role in disease evaluation. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to evaluate the image quality and diagnostic value of ultra-high-resolution CT (U-HRCT) in TMD compared to cone-beam CT (CBCT). METHODS TMD patients who underwent both CBCT and U-HRCT between November 2021 and September 2022 were retrospectively included. Image quality scores were assigned for four osseous structures (the cortical and trabecular bones of the condyle, articular eminence, and glenoid fossa) by two independent observers from Score 1 (unacceptable) to Score 5 (excellent). Diagnostic classification of TMD was categorized as follows: Class A (no evident lesion), Class B (indeterminate condition) and Class C (definitive lesion). Image quality scores and diagnostic classifications were compared between CBCT and U-HRCT. The Cohen's Kappa test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were conducted for statistical analysis. RESULTS Thirty TMD patients (median age, 30 years; interquartile range, 26-43 years; 25 females) with 60 TMJs were enrolled. Image quality scores were higher for U-HRCT than for CBCT by both observers (all Ps < 0.001). Definitive diagnoses (Class A and C) were achieved in more cases with U-HRCT than with CBCT (93.3% vs. 65.0%, Fisher's exact value = 7.959, P = 0.012). Among the 21 cases which were ambiguously diagnosed (Class B) by CBCT, definitive diagnosis was achieved for 17 cases (81.0%) using U-HRCT. CONCLUSIONS U-HRCT can identify osseous changes in TMD, providing improved image quality and a more definitive diagnosis, which makes it a feasible diagnostic imaging method for TMD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare cylindrical and convex triangular field-of-views (FOVs) concerning the magnitude of artefacts from high-density materials in cone-beam CT (CBCT). METHODS AND MATERIALS Cylinders of amalgam, chromium-cobalt, titanium, and zirconia were individually placed in the anterior and posterior regions of a polymethylmethacrylate phantom and scanned using cylindrical and convex triangular FOVs of the Veraview X800 CBCT device. Using the Image J software, 15 square regions of interest (ROIs) were placed in the axial reconstruction around the middle level of the cylinder and at distances of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 cm from the centre of the cylinder. Mean grey value and standard deviation of each ROI were averaged for each distance and subtracted from the values of a control ROI to calculate the magnitude of the artefacts by the grey value mean difference (GVMD) and grey value standard deviation (GVSD). Multiway analysis of variance with Tukey post-hoc test with a significance level of 5% evaluated the effect of the shape of the FOV, position inside the FOV, high-density material, and the distance of the artefact from the material. RESULTS The convex triangular FOV increased the GVSD for all materials in the anterior and posterior regions at 0.5 cm compared to the cylindrical FOV (p < 0.0001). The convex triangular FOV showed greater GVMD for chromium-cobalt and zirconium in the anterior region and all materials in the posterior region at all distances (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION The FOV shape influences the magnitude of artefacts from high-density materials. The convex triangular FOV showed greater artefact magnitude with variability among the high-density materials, region in the FOV, and distance from the material.

Abstract
Purpose This study was performed to develop a linear regression model using the pulp-to-tooth volume ratio (PTVR) ratio of the maxillary canine, assessed through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, to predict chronological age (CA) in Indonesian adults. Materials and Methods A sample of 99 maxillary canines was collected from patients between 20 and 49.99 years old. These samples were obtained from CBCT scans taken at the Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital in Indonesia between 2018 and 2022. Pulp volume (PV) and tooth volume (TV) were measured using ITK-SNAP, while PTVR was calculated from the PV/TV ratio. Using RStudio, a linear regression was performed to predict CA using PTVR. Additionally, correlation and observer agreement were assessed. Results The PTVR method demonstrated excellent reproducibility, and a significant correlation was found between the PTVR of the maxillary canine and CA (r=-0.74, P<0.01). The linear regression analysis showed an R2 of 0.58, a root mean square error of 5.85, and a mean absolute error of 4.31. Conclusion Linear regression using the PTVR can be effectively applied to predict CA in Indonesian adults between 20 and 49.99 years of age. As models of this type can be population-specific, recalibration for each population is encouraged. Additionally, future research should explore the use of other teeth, such as molars.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether variations in head positioning may influence the reproducibility of cone-beam CT (CBCT) three-dimensional (3D) segmented models of the mandibular condyle. METHODS Five fresh frozen cadaver heads were scanned in four different positions: reference position (RP) and a set of three tilted alternative head positions (AP) in anteroposterior direction (AP1: 2 cm anterior translation, AP2: 5° pitch rotation, AP3: 10° pitch rotation). Surface models of mandibular condyles were constructed and compared with the condylar reference position using voxel-based registration. Descriptive statistics and a linear mixed-effects model were performed to compare condylar volumetric differences and root mean square (RMS) distance between surfaces of AP vs RP. RESULTS The mean differences in condylar volumes of AP vs RP were 14.1 mm³ (95% CI [-79.3, 107.4]) for AP1, 1.0 mm³ (95% CI [-87.2, 89.2]) for AP2 and 0.1 mm³ (95% CI [-88.3, 88.4]) for AP3. Mean and absolute volumetric differences did not exceed earlier reported intraoperator differences of 30 mm³. The RMS distance values obtained per group were 0.12 mm (95% CI [0.05,0.20]) for AP1, 0.17 mm (95% CI [0.10, 0.22]) for AP2 and 0.17 mm for AP3 (95% CI [0.10,0.22]). The confidence intervals (CI) for RMS distance remained far below the threshold for clinical acceptability (0.5 mm). CONCLUSIONS Within the limits of the present study, it is suggested that tilted head positions may affect the reproducibility of 3D condylar segmentation, thereby influencing outcome in repeated CBCT scanning. Nevertheless, observed differences are unlikely to have a meaningful impact on clinical patient diagnosis and management.

Abstract
Aims: This study aimed to assess the sphenoid sinus pneumatization types and their correlation with adjacent neurovascular structures using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 97 CBCT scans of patients over 18 years of age that were retrieved from the archives of the Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Department of School of Dentistry. Type of sphenoid sinus pneumatization based on its relationship with sella turcica (conchal, presellar, sellar, and postsellar), the correlation of internal carotid artery (ICA) and optic nerve (ON) with the sinus cavity in the axial and coronal planes (smooth or prolonged type), and presence of Onodi cells and their correlation with the sphenoid sinus (lateral, superior, and superolateral) were all evaluated on CBCT sections. Data were analyzed by the Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests (alpha = 0.05). Results: Postsellar type was the most common sphenoid sinus pneumatization type (82.5%). The Smooth type was the most common form of correlation of ON and ICA with the sphenoid sinus. Onodi cells were noted in 28.9% of the cases; among which, the lateral type had the highest prevalence. Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence of sphenoid sinus pneumatization, Onodi cells, and ON and ICA protrusion in our study population, CBCT should be requested prior to trans-sphenoidal surgical procedures to prevent perioperative and postoperative complications. Abstract
Purpose This systematic review examined the detection of the posterior superior alveolar artery, along with various anatomic characteristics, on cone-beam computed tomography images. Materials and Methods Studies were identified electronically through the Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Embase databases. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using a 5-item binary scale. The detection rate, location, and classified diameter of the posterior superior alveolar artery were estimated as prevalence values. The diameter of this artery, as well as the distances from the artery to the alveolar crest and sinus floor, were estimated as means with associated 95% confidence intervals. Results Thirty-seven studies were enrolled, with 34 of these included in the meta-analysis. The mean detection rate was 79% (range: 72%-84%), and the mean diameter was 1.06±0.05 mm (range: 0.96-1.16 mm). The posterior superior alveolar artery was located intraosseously in 64% of cases. The mean distance of the artery from the alveolar crest was 16.71±0.49 mm (range: 15.75-17.68 mm), while the mean distance from the artery to the sinus floor was 8.85±0.4 mm (range: 8.05-9.64 mm). Conclusion According to the findings of this meta-analysis regarding various anatomic characteristics of the posterior superior alveolar artery, severe hemorrhage after damage to this artery during sinus augmentation procedures is not a substantial clinical problem.

Abstract
The aim of this report is to present a case of chondroblastic osteosarcoma located in the right maxillary premolar region of a 17-year-old female patient. The initial clinical presentation and 2-dimensional (2D) radiographic methods proved inadequate for a definitive diagnosis. However, a cone-beam computed tomography scan revealed a hyperdense, heterogeneous lesion in the right maxillary premolar region, exhibiting a characteristic "sun-ray" appearance. To assess soft tissue involvement, a medical computed tomography scan was subsequently conducted. A positron emission tomography scan detected no metastasis or indications of secondary tumors. T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed signal heterogeneity within the lesion, including areas of low signal intensity at the periphery. A histological examination conducted after an incisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of high-grade chondroblastic osteosarcoma. The patient was then referred to an oncology department for chemotherapy before surgery. In conclusion, these findings suggest that early diagnosis using 3-dimensional imaging can detect chondroblastic osteosarcoma in its early stages, such as before metastasis occurs, thereby improving the patient's prognosis.

Abstract
Purpose Ectopic eruption can be defined as the emergence of a tooth in an abnormal location, where the tooth does not follow its typical eruption pathway. While ectopic eruption within the dentate region is well-documented in the literature, ectopic eruption in non-dentate regions is relatively rare. This study aimed to report 6 cases of ectopic teeth and present a systematic review of the English-language literature on ectopic teeth, emphasizing demographic characteristics, radiographic features, potential complications, and treatment options. Materials and Methods A literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases. The demographic data and radiographic findings of patients presenting with ectopic teeth were recorded. Results The literature review yielded 61 cases of ectopic teeth, with patients ranging in age from 3 to 74 years. The findings from these previously reported cases demonstrated that the most common location for ectopic teeth was the maxillary sinus, which is consistent with this case series. The Pearson chi-square test was performed to evaluate the correlation between age and location of ectopic teeth, and the results were found to be statistically significant (P<0.05). However, no statistically significant relationship was observed between sex and the location of ectopic teeth. Conclusion The distinct features of these cases warrant reporting. This study presents the first case of supernumerary teeth in the condyle without any associated pathosis. Another notable characteristic is the pre-eruptive resorption of 2 inverted supernumerary teeth ectopically located in the palate, which predisposes to sinus opacification.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Orthodontics is closely related to periodontics. The buccolingual inclination (BLI) of the incisors and deficiencies in their buccal (BHd) and lingual (LHd) cortical plate heights may affect orthodontic outcomes. Identifying risk factors that can compromise buccal or lingual bone heights may have clinical value. The literature on BLI/BHd/LHd is not only scarce but also limited to one jaw. We aimed to examine, for the first time, factors affecting BLI/BHd/LHd not evaluated before as well as other factors with scarce literature about them. METHODS In this two-phase epidemiological and analytical study, inclinations and cortical heights of 248 incisors (bilateral centrals and laterals) were evaluated blindly on 62 randomly selected high-resolution pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography volumes (30 maxillae [13 men, 17 women], 32 mandibles [13 men, 19 women]). The sample was balanced in terms of sexes, jaws, and ages. The BLI/BHd/LHd of bilateral incisors were measured (intraobserver agreement > 95%). The effects of jaws, sexes, age, sides, and incisor types on each of the anatomical variables (BLI/BHd/LHd) were analyzed using a Mixed-Model Multiple Linear Regression analysis. Correlations among continuous variables were assessed using a Pearson coefficient (α = 0.05). RESULTS For the maxillary centrals, BLI, BHd, and LHd were 106.79 ± 5.06, 1.94 ± 0.95, and 1.50 ± 0.76, respectively. These parameters were '110.56 ± 5.97, 1.81 ± 0.83, 1.23 ± 0.69' for the maxillary laterals; '97.64 ± 8.26, 2.98 ± 1.48, 3.46 ± 1.45' for the mandibular centrals; and '95.98 ± 6.80, 3.29 ± 1.72, and 2.73 ± 1.15' for the mandibular laterals. BLI was greater in the maxilla compared to the mandible and in the lateral incisors compared to centrals (P < 0.05). BHd was greater (more deficient) in the mandible (P = 0.000). Age, sex, or side were not associated with BLI (P > 0.05). Age, sex, side, or incisor types were not associated with BHd (P > 0.05). LHd was greater in the mandible, older individuals, and centrals (P < 0.05). There were some significant but weak correlations between BLI with BHd and especially LHd (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION In the maxilla, but not in the mandible, incisors' BLI may determine LHd. Maxillary incisors may have greater BLIs as well as greater buccal and lingual alveolar bone heights compared to mandibular incisors. BLI might be greater in the laterals compared to the centrals in both jaws combined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether slim the face or not after removed third molars is the concern of some orthodontic treatment candidates. The aim of this article is to explore the volume changes of facial soft and hard tissues after third molars extraction, as well as develop a reproducible clinical protocol to precisely assess facial soft tissue volume change. METHODS A non-randomized, non-blind, self-controlled pilot study was conducted. 24 adults aged 18-30 had ipsilateral third molars extracted. The body weight change was controlled within 2 kg. Structured light scans were taken under a standardized procedure pre-extraction (T0), three (T1), and six (T2) months post-extraction; CBCTs were taken at T0 and T2. The projection method was proposed to measure the soft tissue volume (STV) and the soft tissue volume change (STVC) by the Geomagic software. The hard tissue volume change (HTVC) was measured in the Dragonfly software. RESULTS The final sample size is 23, including 5 males (age 26.6 ± 2.5 years) and 18 females (age 27.3 ± 2.5 years). The HTVC was - 2.33 ± 0.46ml on the extraction side. On the extraction side, the STV decreased by 1.396 (95% CI: 0.323-2.470) ml (P < 0.05) at T1, and increased by 1.753 (95% CI: -0.01-3.507) ml (P = 0.05) at T2. T2 and T0 had no difference (P > 0.05). The inter and intra-raters ICC of the projection method was 0.959 and 0.974. There was no correlation between the STVC and HTVC (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS After ipsilateral wisdom teeth extraction, the volume of hard tissue on the extraction side reduces, and the volume of facial soft tissue does not change evidently. However, further research with large sample size is still needed. The STV measurement has excellent repeatability. It can be extended to other interested areas, including forehead, nose, paranasal, upper lip, lower lip and chin, which is meaningful in the field of orthodontics and orthopedics. Abstract
BACKGROUND This 6-month randomized split-mouth and placebo-controlled clinical trial aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiographic efficacy of adjunctive use of 0.05% ZLN gel as local drug delivery (LDD) to scaling and root planning (SRP) in stage III, grade B periodontitis patients with and without controlled type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS 120 infrabony sites were divided into two groups; GROUP-1 (non-diabetic periodontitis) and GROUP-2 (periodontitis +DM). 60 sites in each group were randomized to receive treatment with SRP+placebo gel (control) or SRP+0.05% ZLN gel (test). Plaque index (PI), modified sulcus bleeding index (mSBI), pocket probing depth (PPD) and relative attachment levels (RAL) were assessed at baseline, 3 and 6-months and digital periapical (IOPA) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging were used to measure the linear and percentage reduction of intrabony defect depth (DD, DDR%) after 6-months. RESULTS GROUP-1 showed significant reduction in PI (0.56±0.15 and 0.52±0.19 from 0.67±0.17), mSBI (0.7±0.60 and 0.47±0.57 from 0.9±0.48), PPD (4.6±0.85 and 3.43±0.63 from 6.5±1.04) and gain in RAL (7.03±0.85 and 5.93±0.69 from 8.9±1.09) in the ZLN treated sites than the placebo sites and also from GROUP-2 sites after 3 and 6 months respectively. A significant reduction in defect depth of 28.79% in GROUP-1 and 22.20% in GROUP-2 at ZLN sites was seen compared to placebo sites of both groups. CONCLUSION ZLN gel applied subgingivally in infrabony pockets resulted in significant clinical improvements evident by probing depth reduction and gain in attachment levels along with radiographic evidence of more bone fill seen in non-diabetic patients compared to diabetic periodontitis patients. Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and digital intraoral radiography for the detection of proximal caries adjacent to amalgam, e.max porcelain, and metal-ceramic restorations (MCRs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Parallel intraoral radiographs were obtained from 40 posterior teeth using PSP sensors. To obtain CBCT scans, the teeth were first radiographed alone, and were then positioned next to a tooth with an amalgam restoration, MCR, and e.max porcelain crown, and radiographed again. Two blinded observers scored radiographs using a four-point scale (0: absence of proximal caries, 1: enamel caries, 2: carious lesion extending to the outer half of dentin, 3: carious lesion extending to the inner half of dentin). Tooth sections were made, and the grade of caries was determined under a light microscope at x12 magnification. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CBCT and intraoral radiographs were then calculated. RESULTS Artifact-free CBCT scans and intraoral radiographs had the highest diagnostic accuracy (0.826 and 0.657, respectively) while CBCT images of the teeth next to the amalgam restorations (0.526) had the lowest accuracy. The diagnostic accuracy of CBCT images of the teeth next to the porcelain crowns and MCRs was 0.613 and 0.601, respectively. CONCLUSION Artifact-free CBCT images had higher diagnostic accuracy than intraoral radiography for the detection of all grades of proximal caries. The diagnostic accuracy of CBCT images of teeth adjacent to amalgam, porcelain, and MCRs was lower compared to intraoral radiographs and artifact-free CBCT images.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review and meta-analysis to provide overall estimates of the recall and precision of artificial intelligence for detection and segmentation using oral and maxillofacial cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search was done in Embase, PubMed, and Scopus through October 31, 2022 to identify studies that reported the recall and precision values of artificial intelligence systems using oral and maxillofacial CBCT images for the automatic detection or segmentation of anatomical landmarks or pathological lesions. Recall (sensitivity) indicates the percentage of certain structures that are correctly detected. Precision (positive predictive value) indicates the percentage of accurately identified structures out of all detected structures. The performance values were extracted and pooled, and the estimates were presented with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS In total, 12 eligible studies were finally included. The overall pooled recall for artificial intelligence was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.87-0.94). In a subgroup analysis, the pooled recall was 0.88 (95% CI: 0.77-0.94) for detection and 0.92 (95% CI: 0.87-0.96) for segmentation. The overall pooled precision for artificial intelligence was 0.93 (95% CI: 0.88-0.95). A subgroup analysis showed that the pooled precision value was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.77-0.96) for detection and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.89-0.97) for segmentation. CONCLUSION Excellent performance was found for artificial intelligence using oral and maxillofacial CBCT images.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the anatomic circle around the impacted lower third molar to show, document, and correlate essential findings that should be included in the routine radiographic assessment protocol as clinically meaningful factors in overall case evaluation and treatment planning. Materials and Methods Cone-beam computed tomographic images of impacted lower third molars were selected according to specific inclusion criteria. Impacted teeth were classified according to their position before assessment. The adjacent second molars were assessed for distal caries, distal bone loss, and root resorption. The fourth finding was the presence of a retromolar canal distal to the impaction. Communication with the dentist responsible for each case was done to determine whether these findings were detected or undetected by them before communication. Results Statistically significant correlations were found between impaction position, distal bone loss, and detected distal caries associated with the adjacent second molar. The greatest percentage of undetected findings was found in the evaluation of distal bone status, followed by missed detection of the retromolar canal. Conclusion The radiographic assessment protocol for impacted third molars should consider a step-by-step evaluation for second molars, and clinicians should be aware of the high prevalence of second molar affection in horizontal and mesioangular impactions. They also should search for the retromolar canal due to its associated clinical considerations.

Abstract
Purpose The objective of this study was to assess the fractal dimension, lacunarity, trabecular microarchitecture parameters, and cortical linear measurements in the mandibles of male and female individuals to identify differences between them. Materials and Methods In total, 116 cone-beam computed tomography scans of healthy individuals of different ages (57 men and 59 women, aged between 20 and 60 years) were selected. The following bone parameters were measured: 1) buccal, lingual, and basal cortical bone thickness in 5 standard parasagittal sections (the midline, the left and right sides of the lower lateral incisors, and the left and right sides of the lower canines); 2) the bone volume fraction of 10 sequential axial sections from each patient by creating a volume of interest in the area between the lower canines; and 3) fractal dimension and lacunarity using grayscale images of the same region of the volume of interest in the anterior mandible. Spearman correlation coefficients and the Mann-Whitney test were used. Results A significant and positive correlation was found between age and cortical thickness, especially in the region of the central incisors. Significant differences between sexes in terms of fractal dimension, lacunarity, and bone volume were found. Women revealed lower fractal dimension values and higher lacunarity and bone volume ratio values than men. Conclusion Fractal dimension, lacunarity, trabecular bone volume, and cortical thickness were different between men and women of different ages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A systematic review was performed to evaluate the performance of panoramic radiography (PR) vs CT or cone beam CT (CBCT) in the diagnosis of pathological maxillary sinuses. METHODS This review was registered in the PROSPERO database under the number CRD42020211766. Observational studies that compared PR with CT/CBCT were used to evaluate pathological changes in the maxillary sinuses. A complete search of seven primary databases and gray literature was carried out. The risk of bias was assessed according to the Newcastle-Ottawa tool, and the GRADE tool was used to assess the quality of evidence. A binary meta-analysis was performed to assess the effectiveness of evaluating pathological alterations in the maxillary sinuses in PR and CT/CBCT. RESULTS Seven studies were included in our study, out of which four were included in a quantitative analysis. All studies were classified as low risk of bias. Five studies compared PR with CBCT and two studies compared PR to CT. The most common pathological alteration in maxillary sinuses reported was mucosal thickening. CT/CBCT was seen to be the most effective method for assessing pathological changes in the maxillary sinus when compared to PR (RR = 0.19, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.05 to 0.70, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION CT/CBCT are the most appropriate imaging methods to evaluate pathological changes in the maxillary sinuses, while PR is still limited in the evaluation of these changes being considered only for initial diagnosis.

Abstract
This study purposed to develop statistical models to predict palatal (PRL), mesial (MRL), and distal (DRL) root canal length and pulp volume (PV) of the maxillary first permanent molar using stature, gender, mesiodistal (MD), and buccopalatal (BP) crown diameters and some facial morphometries. 57 individuals were included in the study. Cone beam computed tomography was used to measure root canal lengths and PV. The PV calculation was carried out using the software ITK-SNAP 3.4.0. PRL was positively correlated with BP, stature, middle facial height, interalar distance, and bicommissural distance (BCD) (p < 0.05). DRL was positively correlated with BP, MD, and stature (p < 0.05). MRL was positively correlated with BP, MD, stature, lower face height, bizygomatic distance, and BCD (p < 0.05). PV was negatively correlated with age and BCD (p < 0.05). Although all models have significant predictive power for the root lengths and PV, no model could explain variances greater than 30%. The highest and lowest predictive ability was obtained for PRL and DRL, respectively. While the most significant predictor was BP for PRL and DRL, it was the age for PV.

Abstract
PURPOSE The double coronoid process (DCP) is a very unusual feature in patient. The literature, which briefly describes just only one case. Being this a very unusual feature, the aim of the paper is to describe the finding, discuss the anatomic, radiological, and clinical characteristics of a DCP. METHODS A 61-year-old-woman with no significant medical history, extraoral and intraoral examination was unremarkable. Following panoramic radiography (PR) for assessment of periodontal support and pre-implant planning suspicious radiopaque area in the mandibular notch on the left side was observed. Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were subsequently performed. RESULTS No signs and symptoms of syndromes or medical records with a relevant contribution to the DCP existence and the patient denied any type of facial trauma. CBCT image showed the structure found on the PR was indeed a DCP and it was not superimposed on the mandibular notch area, MRI was performed to investigate soft tissue components and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or other alterations. CONCLUSION DPC is extremely rare with the only case reported in the literature within the same comparison parameters. In this case images revealed the muscles, articular surfaces and articular disc were well preserved, and no other alterations were found.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy in endodontics of a novel augmented reality (AR) method for guided access cavity preparation in 3D-printed jaws. METHODS Two operators with different levels of experience in endodontics performed pre-planned virtually guided access cavities through a novel markerless AR system developed by a team among the authors on three sets of 3D-printed jaw models using a 3D printer (Objet Connex 350, Stratasys) mounted on a phantom. After the treatment, a post-operative high-resolution CBCT scan (NewTom VGI Evo, Cefla) was taken for each model and registered to the pre-operative model. All the access cavities were then digitally reconstructed by filling the cavity area using 3D medical software (3-Matic 15.0, Materialise). For the anterior teeth and the premolars, the deviation at the coronal and apical entry points as well as the angular deviation of the access cavity were compared to the virtual plan. For the molars, the deviation at the coronal entry point was compared to the virtual plan. Additionally, the surface area of all access cavities at the entry point was measured and compared to the virtual plan. Descriptive statistics for each parameter were performed. A 95% confidence interval was calculated. RESULTS A total of 90 access cavities were drilled up to a depth of 4 mm inside the tooth. The mean deviation in the frontal teeth and in the premolars at the entry point was 0.51 mm and 0.77 mm at the apical point, with a mean angular deviation of 8.5° and a mean surface overlap of 57%. The mean deviation for the molars at the entry point was 0.63 mm, with a mean surface overlap of 82%. CONCLUSION The use of AR as a digital guide for endodontic access cavity drilling on different teeth showed promising results and might have potential for clinical use. However, further development and research might be needed before in vivo validation to overcome the limitations of the study.

Abstract
Objectives It is not unusual for Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) lesions that have similar clinical presentation and staging to have dissimilar radiographic extent of disease. The aim of this review was to explore the published scientific literature for quantitative indices that describe the cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) radiographic features of MRONJ lesions and assess their clinical utility. Method and Materials A scoping review of the literature was performed to identify quantitative indices developed to describe the CBCT radiographic features of MRONJ lesions. Five electronic databases were included in the review: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Trip medical database, and Cochrane Library. Articles published from the year 2003 onward were included in the review. Results 367 articles were initially included in the review. 39 abstracts were screened for full-text assessment. The scoping review yielded 12 full length articles with169 cases reported. The Composite Radiographic Index score (CRI score) was identified as the most meaningful index in published literature that attempted to quantify qualitative radiographic changes (Walton, Grogan et al. 2019). However, lesions with similar CRI scores that corresponded to intermediate severity (3-5) may be very dissimilar radiographically in both nature and extent of radiographic changes, undercutting its clinical value. Conclusion The CRI index score was the only relevant index for cross-sectional (one-time) assessment of established MRONJ lesions (non-stage 0). This scoping review yielded several critical questions regarding the clinical significance and prognostic implications of various radiographic changes in MRONJ, thereby identifying focus areas for future research.

Abstract
Background We aimed to compare the diagnostic quality of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in high (HR) and low (LR) resolution modes for assessment of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Methods This in vitro study was conducted on 5 dry human skulls by using a CBCT and a MDCT scanner in HR and LR modes to assess their diagnostic quality for 21 anatomical landmarks of the nose. The quality of images was evaluated by two oral and maxillofacial radiologists and a dentist using a four-point Likert scale of (I) poor, (II) decreased, (III) good, and (IV) excellent. Data were analyzed by STATA at 95% confidence interval. The Chi-square test was applied to compare the quality of visualization of landmarks based on the type of scanner. Results The diagnostic quality of HR CBCT and CT for the majority of landmarks was higher than that of LR CBCT and CT (P<0.05). The diagnostic quality of HR CBCT for agger nasi cells (P=0.010), olfactory cleft (P=0.032), sphenoethmoidal recess (P=0.032), and nasolacrimal duct (P=0.014) and LR CBCT for the middle turbinate (P=0.046) and middle meatus (P=0.031) was significantly higher than that of MDCT. Conclusion The diagnostic quality of HR CBCT and CT for the majority of the landmarks in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses was higher than that of LR CBCT and CT. For the majority of landmarks, the diagnostic quality of CBCT and CT was the same; while for some landmarks, the diagnostic quality of HR and LR CBCT was higher than HR and LR CT. In general, CBCT has high efficacy for evaluation of the paranasal sinuses and the nasal cavity, and provides diagnostic information comparable to those provided by CT, but with a much lower radiation dose.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare volume measurements obtained using 2 image software packages on Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images acquired from 1 multidetector computed tomography and 5 cone-beam computed tomography devices, using different protocols for physical volume measurements. Materials and Methods Four pieces of bovine leg were prepared. Marrow was removed from 3 pieces, leaving cortical bone exposed. The resulting space of 1 piece was filled with water, another was filled with propylene glycol, and the third was left unfilled. The marrow in the fourth sample was left fully intact. Volume measurements were obtained after importing DICOM images into the Dolphin Imaging 11.95 and ITK-SNAP software programs. Data were analyzed using 3-way analysis of variance with a generalized linear model to determine the effects of voxel size, software, and content on percentage mean volume differences between tomographic protocols. A significance level of 0.05 was used. Results The intraclass correlation coefficients for intraobserver and interobserver reliability were, respectively, 0.915 and 0.764 for the Dolphin software and 0.894 and 0.766 for the ITK-SNAP software. Three sources of statistically significant variation were identified: the interaction between software and content (P=0.001), the main effect of content (P=0.014), and the main effect of software (P=0.001). Voxel size was not associated with statistically significant differences in volume measurements. Conclusion Both content and software influenced the accuracy of volume measurements, especially when the content had gray values similar to those of the adjacent tissues.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between bone density measurements obtained using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and morphometric parameters of bone determined by histomorphometric analysis. Materials and Methods In this in vivo study, 30 samples from the maxillary bones of 7 sheep were acquired using a trephine. The bone samples were returned to their original sites, and the sheep heads were imaged using CBCT. On the CBCT images, gray values were calculated. In the histomorphometric analysis, the total bone volume, the trabecular bone volume (referred to simply as bone volume), and the trabecular thickness were assessed. Results Statistical testing showed significant correlations between CBCT gray values and total bone volume (r=0.537, P=0.002), bone volume (r=0.672, P<0.001), and trabecular thickness (r=0.692, P<0.001), as determined via the histomorphometric analysis. Conclusion The results indicate a significant and acceptable association between CBCT gray values and bone volume, suggesting that CBCT may be used in bone densitometry.

Abstract
Purpose This study investigated whether the relationship between the maxillary sinus and the root of the maxillary premolar is correlated with the root position and whether there is a difference in the long axis angle of premolars and the buccal bone thickness according to the sinus-root relationship and root position. Materials and Methods Cone-beam computed tomographic images of 587 maxillary first premolars and 580 second premolars from 303 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The maxillary sinus floor-root relationship was classified into 4 types, and the root position in the alveolar bone was evaluated as buccal, middle, or palatal. The long axis angle of the maxillary premolars in the alveolar bone and the buccal bone thickness were measured. The correlation between these parameters was analyzed. Results The maxillary sinus floor-root relationship showed a statistically significant correlation with the root position in the alveolar bone. Most maxillary first premolars were buccally located, and more than half of the second premolars had their roots in the middle. The long axis angle of the premolars was significantly larger in buccal-positioned teeth than in middle-positioned teeth, and the buccal bone was thinner. Conclusion When the root of the maxillary premolar was separated from the sinus floor, the premolar was often located on the buccal side. Most of the maxillary first premolars had a thinner buccal bone and larger inclination than the second premolars. It is recommended to evaluate the root position, sagittal angle and buccal bone thickness using CBCT for implant treatment planning.

Abstract
Purpose This study evaluated the prevalence of dental implant positioning errors and the most frequently affected oral regions. Materials and Methods A sample was obtained of CBCT images of 590 dental implants from 230 individuals who underwent diagnosis at a radiology center using cone-beam computed tomography from 2017 to 2020. The following variables were considered: thread exposure, violation of the minimum distance between 2 adjacent implants and between the implant and tooth, and implant contact with anatomical structures. Descriptive data analysis and the Pearson chi-square test (P<0.05) were performed to compare findings according to mouth regions. Results Most (74.4%) of the 590 implants were poorly positioned, with the posterior region of the maxilla being the region most frequently affected by errors. Among the variables analyzed, the most prevalent was thread exposure (54.7%), followed by implant contact with anatomical structures, violation of the recommended distance between 2 implants and violation of the recommended distance between the implant and teeth. Thread exposure was significantly associated with the anterior region of the mandible (P<0.05). The anterior region of the maxilla was associated with violation of the recommended tooth-implant distance (P<0.05) and the recommended distance between 2 adjacent implants (P<0.05). Implant contact with anatomical structures was significantly more likely to occur in the posterior region of the maxilla (P<0.05). Conclusion Many implants were poorly positioned in the posterior region of the maxilla. Thread exposure was particularly frequent and was significantly associated with the anterior region of the mandible.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of infraorbital canal protrusion in an Egyptian subpopulation using cone-beam computed tomography and to describe its radiographic representation. Materials and Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using the records of 77 patients and 123 maxillary sinuses. The full lengths of the sinuses were visible for the detection of infraorbital canal protrusion. The infraorbital canals were classified into 3 types based on their relation to the sinus. If the septum was present, its length and its distance from the sinus floor were measured. Qualitative and quantitative variables were described as percentages and means with standard deviations, respectively. Results The infraorbital canal most commonly presented as the normal confined type (detected in 78.1% of sinuses), whereas the suspended (or protruded) variant was found in 14.6% of the examined sinuses. The septal length ranged from 0.9 to 5.1 mm, with a mean of 2.8±1.1 mm. The distance to the sinus floor ranged from 5.2 to 29.6 mm depending on the sinus shape and size. Conclusion The present study indicates that protrusion of the infraorbital canal is not rare, and surgeons that use the maxillary sinuses as corridors for their procedures must be more cautious, especially in the upper lateral confines of the sinus.

Abstract
Purpose The goal of this systematic review was to compare the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) with that of computed tomography (CT) for volumetric evaluations of the tongue and oral cavity. Materials and Methods A search for articles was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses guidelines. The PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and SAGE Journals databases were searched for articles published between 2011 and 2021. Articles were screened and assessed for eligibility. Screening involved checking for duplication, reading the title and abstract, and reading the full text. Results The initial search retrieved 25,780 articles. Application of the eligibility criteria yielded 16 articles for qualitative analysis. Multiple uses of CBCT were identified. In several studies, researchers assessed the volumetric correlation between tongue and oral cavity volumes, as well as other parameters. Post-treatment volumetric evaluations of the oral cavity were also reported, and the reliability of CBCT was assessed. The use of CT resembled that of CBCT. Conclusion CBCT has been used in the evaluation of tongue and oral cavity volumes to assess correlations between those volumes and with the upper airway. It has also been used for volumetric evaluation after surgical and non-surgical procedures and to assess the relationships between tongue volume, tooth position, occlusion, and body mass index. Participants with obstructive sleep apnea and malocclusion have been evaluated, and the reliability of CBCT has been assessed. In the included studies, CT was utilized for similar purposes as CBCT, but its reliability was not assessed.

Abstract
Objectives: 'Field of view (FOV) size' affects the quality of radiographic images and the radiation dose received by patients. In cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) FOV should be selected according to therapeutic purposes. While aiming for the highest diagnostic image quality, the radiation dose should be kept to a minimum to reduce the risk for patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of different sizes of FOV on contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) in five different CBCT units. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, CBCT scans were taken from a dried human mandible containing a resin block fixed to the lingual cortex and a resin ring was used to simulate soft tissue during scans. Five CBCT units including, NewTom VGi, NewTom GiANO, Soredex SCANORA 3D, Planmeca ProMax, and Asahi Alphard 3030 were evaluated. Each unit had 3 to 5 different FOVs. Images were obtained and analyzed with ImageJ software and CNR was calculated in each image. ANOVA and T-test were used for statistical analysis (P<0.05). Results: Comparison among different FOVs of each unit showed significant CNR reductions in small FOVs (P<0.05). Similar FOV sizes of different CBCT devices were also compared and demonstrated significant differences (P<0.05). Conclusion: A direct relationship between FOV size and CNR was observed in all five CBCT units, but differences in exposure parameters of these units led to variable CNR in FOVs with similar sizes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images are being increasingly used to acquire three-dimensional (3D) models of the skull for additive manufacturing purposes. However, the accuracy of such models remains a challenge, especially in the orbital area. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of four different CBCT imaging positions on the accuracy of the resulting 3D models in the orbital area. METHODS An anthropomorphic head phantom was manufactured by submerging a dry human skull in silicon to mimic the soft tissue attenuation and scattering properties of the human head. The phantom was scanned on a ProMax 3D MAX CBCT scanner using 90 and 120 kV for four different field of view positions: standard; elevated; backwards tilted; and forward tilted. All CBCT images were subsequently converted into 3D models and geometrically compared with a "gold-standard" optical scan of the dry skull. RESULTS Mean absolute deviations of the 3D models ranged between 0.15 ± 0.11 mm and 0.56 ± 0.28 mm. The elevated imaging position in combination with 120 kV tube voltage resulted in an improved representation of the orbital walls in the resulting 3D model without compromising the accuracy. CONCLUSIONS Head positioning during CBCT imaging can influence the accuracy of the resulting 3D model. The accuracy of such models may be improved by positioning the region of interest (e.g. the orbital area) in the focal plane (Figure 2a) of the CBCT X-ray beam.
