Design and characterization of a new pressurized flat panel photobioreactor for microalgae cultivation and CO2 bio-fixation

Microalgae-based biorefinery processes are gaining particular importance as a biotechnological tool for direct carbon dioxide fixation and production of high-quality biomass and energy feedstock for different industrial markets. However, despite the many technological advances in photobioreactor designs and operations, microalgae cultivation is still limited due to the low yields achieved in open systems and to the high investment and operation costs of closed photobioreactors. In this work, a new alveolar flat panel photobioreactor was designed and characterized with the aim of achieving high microalgae productivities and CO₂ bio-fixation rates. Moreover, the energy efficiency of the employed pump-assisted hydraulic circuit was evaluated. The 1.3 cm thick alveolar flat-panels enhance the light utilization, whereas the hydraulic design of the photobioreactor aims to improve the global CO₂ gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient (k_LaCO₂). The mixing time, liquid flow velocity, and k_LaCO₂ as well as the uniformity matrix of the artificial lighting source were experimentally calculated. The performance of the system was tested by cultivating the green microalga Acutodesmus obliquus. A volumetric biomass concentration equal to 1.9 g L^-1 was achieved after 7 days under controlled indoor cultivation conditions with a CO₂ bio-fixation efficiency of 64% of total injected CO₂. The (gross) energy consumption related to substrate handling was estimated to be between 27 and 46 Wh m^-3, without any cost associated to CO₂ injection and O₂ degassing. The data suggest that this pilot-scale cultivation system may constitute a relevant technology in the development of microalgae-based industrial scenario for CO₂ mitigation and biomass production.

Diel biochemical and photosynthetic monitorization of Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum grown in outdoor pilot-scale flat panel photobioreactors

Diatoms are currently considered valuable feedstocks for different biotechnological applications. To deepen the knowledge on the production of these microalgae, the diel pattern of batch growth, photosystem II performance, and accumulation of target metabolites of two commercially relevant diatoms, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Skeletonema costatum, were followed outdoors in 100-L flat panel photobioreactors. S. costatum presented a higher light-to-biomass conversion resulting in higher growth than P. tricornutum. Both fluorescence data and principal component analysis pointed to temperature as a limiting factor for the growth of P. tricornutum. Higher protein and carbohydrate contents were found in P. tricornutum, whereas S. costatum fatty acids were characterized by a higher unsaturation degree. Higher productivities were found at 1 p.m. for protein, lipid, and ash in the case of S. costatum. Overall, S. costatum showed great potential for outdoor cultivation, revealing a broader temperature tolerance and increased biomass productivity than P. tricornutum.

Concomitant production of fatty acid methyl ester (biodiesel) and exopolysaccharides using efficient harvesting technology in flat panel photobioreactor with special sparging system via Scenedesmus abundans

Current study focusses on the concomitant production of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME, biodiesel) and exopolysaccharides (EPS) from Scenedesmus abundans cell factory in flat panel photobioreactor using cost effective harvesting strategy. Parallel mini and medium scale flat panel photobioreactors (PBRs) with special gas sparging system enabling high gas to liquid mass transfer and efficient mixing were designed. Biomass titer of 6.9 g/l with overall biomass productivity of 1.2 g/l/day was achieved with constant high light intensity of 2162 µE/m²/s in growth phase (134 h) using optimum nutrient concentration. FAME concentration of 1.53 g/l was achieved after 15 days of nitrogen deprivation condition with productivity of 67 mg/l/day. The EPS production of 236 mg/l with a yield of 37 mg/g biomass was achieved. The strain proved its capability to produce multiproducts simultaneously in a single stage PBR by natural autoflocculation harvesting technology.

Microalgae-mediated bioremediation and valorization of cattle wastewater previously digested in a hybrid anaerobic reactor using a photobioreactor: Comparison between batch and continuous operation

Scenedesmus obliquus (ACOI 204/07) microalgae were cultivated in cattle wastewater in vertical alveolar flat panel photobioreactors, operated in batch and continuous mode, after previous digestion in a hybrid anaerobic reactor. In batch operation, removal efficiencies ranges of 65 to 70% of COD, 98 to 99% of NH₄⁺ and 69 to 77.5% of PO₄^-3 after 12days were recorded. The corresponding figures for continuous flow were from 57 to 61% of COD, 94 to 96% of NH₄⁺ and 65 to 70% of PO₄^-3 with mean hidraulic retention time of 12days. Higher rates of CO₂ fixation (327-547mgL^-1d^-1) and higher biomass volumetric productivity (213-358mgL^-1d^-1) were obtained in batch mode. This microalgae-mediated process can be considered promising for bioremediation and valorization of effluents produced by cattle breeding yielding a protein-rich microalgal biomass that could be eventually used as cattle feed.
