Behaviour broadens thermal safety margins on artificial coastal defences in the tropics

Tropical species are predicted to be among the most vulnerable to climate change as they often live close to their upper limits to thermal tolerance and in many cases, behavioural thermoregulation is required to persist in the thermal extremes of tropical latitudes. In concert with warming temperatures, near-shore species are faced with the additional threat of shoreline hardening, leading to a reduction in microhabitats that can provide thermal refuges. This situation is exemplified in Singapore, which lies almost on the equator and so experiences year-round hot temperatures, and much of its coastline is now seawall. To investigate the thermal ecology of a common intertidal gastropod, Nerita undata, on these artificial structures, we measured thermal conditions on two seawalls, the temperatures of habitats occupied by the snail, and compared these with the snail's thermal tolerance by measuring heart rate and behavioural thermoregulation (as preferred temperature, Tpref). At one of the two seawalls (Tanjong Rimau), temperatures experienced by N. undata exceeded all measures of thermal tolerance in the sun, while at the other (Palawan Beach), they did not. Temperatures in habitats occupied by the snails on the seawalls were similar to their measured Tpref in the laboratory and were lower than all measures of thermal tolerance. Behavioural thermoregulation by the snails, therefore, significantly increased the thermal safety margins of N. undata on the relatively homogenous seawalls in Singapore, and at one of the two seawalls were necessary to allow snails to survive. Accordingly, to facilitate motile species to maintain broad thermal safety margins through behavioural regulation, the provision of additional refuges from thermal stress is recommended on artificial coastal defences such as seawalls.

Flower plantings promote insect pollinator abundance and wild bee richness in Canadian agricultural landscapes

ABSTRACT

Global declines in pollinator populations are an ongoing concern from biodiversity and food security viewpoints. A growing conservation initiative in agricultural landscapes is the establishment of wildflowers on marginal lands to provide floral resources and habitat for pollinators. However, the effectiveness of such conservation and restoration efforts are not always assessed. We assessed the effectiveness of a private sector pollinator conservation initiative by (1) comparing insect abundance and richness between planted flower plots and control plots and (2) assessing changes between years. Over two years, planted flower plots and control plots (i.e. out-of-production farm areas) located in Canada were surveyed for insects using visual observation, netting, and pan trapping methods. Significantly more pollinators, especially wild bees, and higher wild bee richness were found in planted plots than control plots. Plot size had no effect on insect abundance and richness indicating that even small-scale flower plantings can provide benefits to pollinator communities. While pollinator, predator, and herbivore arthropod abundance and richness were stable or declined between years, likely due to adverse weather conditions in the second year of the study, wild bee abundance and richness increased over the same period. Our results support that flower plantings can be a successful conservation tool to increase pollinator and wild bee abundance and biodiversity within agricultural landscapes.

IMPLICATIONS FOR INSECT CONSERVATION

Small-scale flower plantings within agricultural landscapes are a simple and effective conservation management strategy to support local insect pollinator populations.

Lifespan map creation enhances stream restoration design

Research and engineering efforts are establishing a vast number of stream restoration planning approaches, design testing frameworks, construction techniques, and performance evaluation methods. A primary question arises as to the lifespan of stream restoration features. This study develops a framework to identify relevant parameters, design criteria and survival thresholds for ten multidisciplinary restoration techniques:

Parameterize relevant features, notably, (1) bar and floodplain grading; (2) berm setback; (3) vegetation plantings; (4) riprap placement; (5) sediment replenishment; (6) side cavities; (7) side channel and anabranches; (8) streambed reshaping; (9) structure removal; and (10) placement of wood in the shape of engineered logjams and rootstocks.

Identify survival thresholds for parameters, where the feature life ends when the threshold value is exceeded.

•

Compare parameter thresholds with spatial data of topographic change and hydrodynamic forces as a result of hydrodynamic modelling of multiple discharges.

The discharge or topographic change rate that is related to the lowest (flood) return period spatially determines the feature’s lifespan in years.

Hydro-morphological parameters generate lifespan maps for stream restoration management

Anthropogenic, eco-morphological degradation of lotic waters necessitates laws, directives, and voluntary actions involving stream restoration and habitat enhancement. Research and engineering efforts are establishing a vast number of stream restoration planning approaches, design testing frameworks, construction techniques, and performance evaluation methods. As the practice of restoration scales up from an individual action at a single site to sequences of actions at many sites in a long river segment, a primary question arises as to the lifespan of such a sequence. This study develops a new framework to identify relevant parameters, design criteria and survival thresholds for ten multidisciplinary restoration techniques, adequate for site-scale to segment-scale application, in a comprehensive review: (1) bar and floodplain grading; (2) berm setback; (3) vegetation plantings; (4) riprap placement; (5) sediment replenishment; (6) side cavities; (7) side channel and anabranches; (8) streambed reshaping; (9) structure removal; and (10) placement of wood in the shape of engineered logjams and rootstocks. Survival thresholds are applied to a sequence of proposed habitat enhancement features for the lower Yuba River in California, USA. Spatially explicit hydraulic and sediment data, together with numerical model predictions of the measures, were vetted against the survival thresholds to produce discharge-dependent lifespan maps. Discharges related to specific flood-return periods enabled probabilistic estimates of the longevity of particular design features. Thus, the lifespan maps indicate the temporal stability of particular stream restoration and habitat enhancement features and techniques. Areas with particularly low or high lifespans help planners optimise the design and positioning of restoration features.

Macroinvertebrate Taxonomic and Functional Trait Compositions within Lotic Habitats Affected By River Restoration Practices

The widespread degradation of lotic ecosystems has prompted extensive river restoration efforts globally, but many studies have reported modest ecological responses to rehabilitation practices. The functional properties of biotic communities are rarely examined within post-project appraisals, which would provide more ecological information underpinning ecosystem responses to restoration practices and potentially pinpoint project limitations. This study examines macroinvertebrate community responses to three projects which aimed to physically restore channel morphologies. Taxonomic and functional trait compositions supported by widely occurring lotic habitats (biotopes) were examined across paired restored and non-restored (control) reaches. The multivariate location (average community composition) of taxonomic and functional trait compositions differed marginally between control and restored reaches. However, changes in the amount of multivariate dispersion were more robust and indicated greater ecological heterogeneity within restored reaches, particularly when considering functional trait compositions. Organic biotopes (macrophyte stands and macroalgae) occurred widely across all study sites and supported a high alpha (within-habitat) taxonomic diversity compared to mineralogical biotopes (sand and gravel patches), which were characteristic of restored reaches. However, mineralogical biotopes possessed a higher beta (between-habitat) functional diversity, although this was less pronounced for taxonomic compositions. This study demonstrates that examining the functional and structural properties of taxa across distinct biotopes can provide a greater understanding of biotic responses to river restoration works. Such information could be used to better understand the ecological implications of rehabilitation practices and guide more effective management strategies.

Biodiversity in intertidal rock pools: informing engineering criteria for artificial habitat enhancement in the built environment

Coastal defence structures are proliferating to counter rising and stormier seas. With increasing concern about the ecological value of built environments, efforts are being made to create novel habitat to increase biodiversity. Rock pools are infrequent on artificial structures. We compared biodiversity patterns between rock pools and emergent rock and assessed the role of pool depth and substratum incline in determining patterns of biodiversity. Rock pools were more taxon rich than emergent substrata. Patterns varied with depth and incline with algal groups being more positively associated with shallow than deeper habitats. Substratum incline had little influence on colonising epibiota, with the exception of canopy algae in deeper habitats where vertical surfaces supported greater taxon richness than horizontal surfaces. The creation of artificial rock pools in built environments will have a positive effect on biodiversity. Building pools of varying depths and inclines and shore heights will provide a range of habitats, increase environmental heterogeneity, therefore creating more possible ecological niches, promoting local biodiversity.
